The Woodpecker Ep 128 - I'm making a dust filtering system - Duration: 17:24.

Hi, on The Woodpecker today, I'm taking care of the dust in the shop.

My workshop is covered with dust. It's everywhere.

Even on my nice shelves.

I'd like to do something about it....

I have had a patreon page for a little bit more than a year now and one of my goals is, if I have enough patronage, to buy a dust filtering system.

But with only ten patrons, by the way thank you very much to all of them, I won't be able to afford one before I get sick...

This is the reason why I looked for used, force air blower fans.

I want to put two dust filters; one on each side of the air intake, just like this.

First thing's first, I need to take some measurements and draw something.

First thing's first, I need to take some measurements and draw something.

Since I want to join the box with finger joints, I need to start by making a jig for that.

The first thing I do, is cut a square hole. Now that I have a hole, I need a key to fill it.

So I rip a piece of maple.

When I try it, it's obvious that it's too wide; I need to fix this.

Now it's perfect. I need to glue it in place.

I leave that aside to dry, taking care to make sure it's square.

While the glue dries, I cut all the sides for both boxes.

I have a lot of cuts to make, but it's not that bad after all.

Now I'm ready to finish the jig.

This is really simple; I just have to put a setup block, the same size as the router bit, beside the key and from behind, I mark where the holding screws will be.

So after drilling some pilot holes, I can screw the jig in place.

And cut two test pieces.

Humm, when I try this, I can see it's not working...

The jig moved while I screwed it the first time.

I fix this and cut another test piece.

Now it's perfect; I can cut all the sides.

It's quite simple; the first cut is done by pushing the pieces up to the key and by cutting the first finger.

Next, I lay the hole I just made on top of the key and cut another finger.

I do that until all the fingers are cut.

When I'm done, I try a dry fit.

I use this opportunity to try one blower inside.

And one filter. This will be perfect.

I use the actual filter to trace the part I need to cut.

Then I measure the right width and mark what I need to cut.

Then I can cut all the pieces.

When I'm done, I'm ready to glue it all, but I want to draw my logo on the filters, so I need to paint those piece beforehand.

But the paint is too thick to be sprayed, so I dilute it with varnish.

After a good stir, I can use the spray gun.

I spray two coats like that.

When the paint is dry, I draw my logo on the first one.

This does a very nice job; I just need to make a couple of touch ups here and there.

But this also destroys my felt pen...

I'll try to do better for the rest. I'm going to make a device to apply some pressure but also follow the unevenness of the wood

I begin by using my biggest hole saw and drilling a hole in a piece of scrap.

The hole should be the same size as the router motor; so I need to enlarge it.

Step one. Now I need to remove a small part.

That way, I'm able to clamp the piece onto the motor.

Now I need to find the size of my pen; but it's not straight.

I drill a hole anyway.

I rub the pen with wax, and put the pen in place; then I can fill the gap with epoxy.

The next day, I remove the pen.

I drill two pilot holes and, to apply some pressure on the pen, I add an elastic band.

And this is how everything will work.

Now I can draw the rest.

While it's drawing on one side, I do some touch up elsewhere.

After a while, I'm ready to begin to glue the boxes.

This is quite simple; a little bit of glue and then everything goes together.

Last thing to do, is to put clamp pressure.

To check if it's square, I use the actual filter.

I don't have enough clamps to clamp two boxes at once, so while I wait for the glue to dry, I make a base for the blower that doesn't have one.

I begin with the sides.

After drilling the mounting holes, I can measure the bottom and cut it.

Now I just need to assemble all the pieces together.

Finally both blowers have a base now, this means I can remove my clamps.

And glue the second box.

The next day, the glue is dry, but some of my fingers are less than perfect...

To fill this, I make a mix of glue and dust and push this paste into the small gaps.

While this dries, I work on the inside of the boxes.

I begin by putting a blower inside.

With it inside, I can figure where to put the wood strips under the base.

After cutting them, I mark where they should go and glue the strips in place.

I can also straighten the sides of the boxes.

I also need to mark the hole which will throw out the filtered air.

To do so, I put the blower in place and trace around the output port.

Next, I drill small holes on each corner.

Now, I can use those holes to trace the shape of the hole from the outside.

So after drilling some holes to let the jigsaw blade through, I cut those holes.

Now, I need to work on the bottom of the filter.

I begin by measuring what I need and cut thin pieces of plywood.

For the horizontal part, I glue together some finger joints I made, to help me clamp the boxes.

I don't want to waste this nice plywood; it's too expensive.

While the glue dries, I can glue some small pieces of wood to hold the bottom strips in place.

Now that my wood paste is dry, I can sand the excess.

Humm, I still have some gaps here and there.

This time I use regular wood paste; this will dry quicker.

The glue of the finger joints glue-up is now dry, I need to sand this nice.

This will look just like that; the only thing I need to do is to glue all the pieces in a L shape.

But nothing is preventing the filters from being pushed down the box; I fix that right away.

I begin by tracing where I want the filter to stop.

And glue wood strips.

Now I'm ready to finish painting the boxes.

But before that, I need to cover my nice drawings.

And like last time, I dilute the paint and spray two coats on the rest of the boxes.

When the paint is dry, I remove the masking tape and spray one coat of varnish on top of everything, even on the inside.

Now that the finish is dry, I can prepare myself for the final assembly.

I begin by marking the placement of the blowers' fixing screws and drill some pilot holes; but I don't screw them in place yet.

Then the holes for the bottom of the filters.

I also staple some screen in front of the blowers' output.

If you're asking yourself why I install some screen there, well, I sometime have birds inside the shop;

this might be cute, but it's also messy.

This one is one of the lucky ones, I opened the window to let it out.

The previous one was not that lucky; here's what's left of it...

It's not a pretty site. I know, sorry...

But it's because of Renée's killer.

Now mini pinschers will be the next breed that Montreal's mayor will ban on his territory.

But if you're asking yourself how a bird can make it inside the shop, well it's quite simple.

During the summer, there's a big gap under the front door; enough for a bird to walk inside.

But during the winter, I add this sill under the doors.

But the installation is not complete yet.

I still need some hardwood washers to screw the boxes in place.

Now I can put the filter boxes in place.

I lay the empty boxes directly on the tie beams.

Then I screw them in place.

Next, come the blowers.

And it's their turn to get screwed in place.

Next step; the electricity. I make a special extension cord for the blowers.

One plug is always hot and the other can be turned off or on with a switch; just in case I need to change my setup in the future.

Then I screw a plug at the end of the motor wires.

But I have one small problem; I have no place for a wire to go...

This is an easy fix.

Done.

But to screw the electrical boxes at the bottom of the filter, I need to add a piece of wood.

To keep the blocks in place, I spread some epoxy and nail them in place.

Then I can screw the boxes.

And try it for the first time.

Ok this is working just fine; I can install the filters now.

I begin with the back ones.

Because of the rafters, I have to put the filter before the wood bottom.

Next I can install the controller and the other bottoms.

And with this last filter, my installation is complete.

I think I can change my patreon goal now, but with such a small amount of patrons, I have a lot of time to think about my next goal.

I'm really happy with my two new filters.

They work great and because of them, you'll be able to see me, probably even for several more years, on The Woodpecker

The Three Religion's Counseling: Islam, Buddhism and Christianity - Duration: 10:12.

A program only possible in Japan

Christianity, Buddhism and Islam Young practitioners of the world's 3 largest religions meet together to answer the world's problems.

Tri-religion Counsel

everyone:Let's begin.

Director(D): We've been sent all these problems, and I'll select one out of them. Is this alright with you all?

Pastor(P):Yes, go ahead.

D (D: Uchiyama):Okay, then, how about this one here? "My husband takes baths with our daughter."

This was sent in by a concerned 41 year old woman. Recently, our daughter who's in her 3rd year of junior high has been taking baths with my husband.

She says, "There's a girl in her class who really likes her dad, so they take baths together,"

and she decided to copy her. My husband nonchalantly agreed, "Okay, sure. Dad loves you too!"

I told them, "Even if you're father and daughter, you're already a junior high school student. This is disgusting!"

But my daughter replied, "It doesn't concern you, Mom." And my husband responded, "I'm just giving my daughter what she wants. What's so wrong with that?"

Don't you think there's something strange about them? Or is it just me?

Father and daughter want to take baths together, while the mother finds it odd.

Now, could you all write down what you think of this, in compliance with your teachings on the paper in front of you?

Now, please show us your words of wisdom!

First of all, it seems we have different opinions. Let's hear from Pastor Miwa first. P:Okay.

(Church of Christ in Japan Urawa Church, Pastor Chishio Miwa)

D: "As a father I would be happy." Um, please tell us your perspective as a Pastor.

everyone:(Laughs) (Church of Christ in Japan Urawa Church, Pastor Chishio Miwa)

D:Not your own personal beliefs. (Church of Christ in Japan Urawa Church, Pastor Chishio Miwa)

P:It's not really something you often hear. I have a daughter as well,

so as a father, I would be happy to hear that.

In terms of being a Christian however, it doesn't say anywhere that you cannot take baths together.

On the other hand, we each follow what's called the principles of creation, and that forbids anything incestuous.

So as a Christian, I would stay far away from it. If something could happen,

then it's best to try and avoid anything of that nature. If…

D:If there's a possibility…

P:If there's even the slightest possibility, one should do their best to avoid it, is what I think.

D:Even if perhaps they just want to have completely innocent physical contact as father and child.

Maybe physical contact isn't the right word, but even just taking a bath together like normal would have the potential of incest occurring.

P:Daughters generally hate their fathers.

The reason why most girls dislike their fathers is because they're biologically built that way.

In order to avoid incestuous affairs our bodies make us gradually dislike them, as stated in the principles of creation.

Whether you believe it or not is up to you, but I personally do.

D:Which means what the wife's saying is correct.

P:Yes, I guess I would agree with her.

D:I see. In that case, Mr. Saeed, is it the same with Islam as well?

Sheikh(SH):Yes, I think there are many similarities. To put it bluntly, I would say that I agree with this mom.

(Director of the Japan Muslim Association, Sheikh Saeed Sato)

If we look at it from an Islamic point of view, (Director of the Japan Muslim Association, Sheikh Saeed Sato)

in Islam, the areas of the body that men and women, those of opposite gender, and of the same gender are allowed to see are mentioned specifically.

For men and fathers, the area between the navel and the knees is not allowed to be seen, even by a man's own daughter.

D:So you are told precisely what areas cannot be seen? SH:Yes, it is the same for both daughters and sons.

D:For sons too? SH:Yes, it's the same for sons too. D:Is that so? For fathers it's from the navel?

SH:Yes, from the navel to the knees. By the way, this is the case for 3rd year junior high students.

Of course it's a different story for weaning infants and children around the ages of 3 and 4.

For 3rd year students in junior high, both boys and girls, it is forbidden for parents to see such things.

For women, there are conflicting views. The arms, feet, face and neck are generally excluded.

In other words, the chest and lower body are not allowed to be seen, even between parents and children.

Because we have these rules, if we were to follow Islam, then they would not be allowed to take baths together.

I have children too. The eldest is 10 while the youngest is only 10 months old, so there's quite a large difference,

but of course, with my 10-month old daughter, I have to change her diapers. D:Well, of course. You would need to put her in the bath and such, right?

SH:Yes, naturally with those things, there's a necessity to it. With my 10 year old son however, we would never take baths together.

D:Even if it's a boy? SH:Yes, we would never.

D:When you go to hot springs as a family, do you enter separately? Or do you not go at all?

SH:Hot springs sometimes have family ones. We normally go individually. D:I see.

Assistant:Do the children go by themselves? SH:With children, when they're around the age of 10, they would of course go by themselves.

Assistant:They can go by themselves, can't they? SH:Yes

D:By then, they already understand, don't they? SH:Yes. Based on the teachings of Islam, that is clear.

However, of course, the lady asking isn't Muslim, but this is just an example of a rule outlined in our religion.

I believe there are some reasons why this came to be, and one of the reasons I can guess is, this's been mentioned before, in regard to seeing the private parts of one another, even family members,

there are things that human beings innately do not wish to see, but when you do, and you're an adult, lust may take form, so as a means of preventing this,

these rules were put in place by God's wisdom, or so I believe. D:By the way, is it allowed for men to enter baths together? Not parent and child, but two friends.

SH:If they go to a hot spring together, as I've said before, at the bare minimum, the navel and both knees.

D:Must be hidden. SH:Yes, must be concealed. D:Even for friends?

SH:Like when women enter a hot spring and wrap their towels around themselves as men enter. Like the image we often see, I think.

D:I see. SH:I, myself, have not entered one with other males.

D:If you had to, you would enter alone. SH:Yes. Not only would you have to conceal yourself,

but you would not be able to look those private parts of anyone else, so even if you cover yourself and go to a bathhouse, it would not be that easy.

D:Well, don't you see such a kind of videos, or such sights...

SH:What kind of videos? Assistant:Yes, what kind?

D:Videos where you could see that portion of the body. SH:My Family doesn't own a television.

D:Oh, so that means you don't go see films very often? SH:To be honest, we don't see any at all. Even if we watch one, we download things off the internet that would be suitable to show children.

At least, that's how we do things at home. Assistant:What about paintings?

Assistant:...Paintings of naked women? SH:Those would be a bit of a problem too. We don't look at any.

P:Do you mind if I ask a question? D:Of course, please go right ahead.

P:There's a Sumo wrestler called Osuna-Arashi. Isn't he showing his forbidden areas? (*Osuna-arashi Kintaro is the 1st ever Muslim Sumo wrestler, belongs to the Otake stable.)

SH:Indeed. P:He has a complete view from here to here, doesn't he? What sort of doctrine is he following?

Is he allowed? (laughs) SH:Actually, it's something I would like to ask him myself. Perhaps he's making compromises as he's doing it.

I've seen his photo in an Egyptian paper. Egypt is a Muslim country, so to have him appear in that kind of clothing would invoke a somewhat negative reaction.

I don't know very much about sumo wrestling, but I believe the papers may have only showed images of him with the thing around his waist.

D:The Kesho-Mawashi.(*an ornamental apron) SH:Is that what it's called? Yes, I think they may have only shown photos of him wearing that.

D:That's the only shot that you could find? SH:Yes.I couldn't find any other photos of him. D:I see.

D:A photo of him from behind would be forbidden, correct? SH:So they probably selected the photo specifically. D:What about a posterior shot? SH:That would be rather bad.

everyone: (Laughs) D:Yes, it would, wouldn't it? SH:It would be very bad.

D:While on the other hand, Mr. Zennen says, "Impermanence; only for the time being."

Monk(M):In principle, I think I'm of the same opinion as everyone else (laughs). It may be something improbable however, rather than entering a bath or not, what did the friend say? (JODO SHINSHU HONGWANJI-HA(Sect), Monk(Bonze) Zennen)

D:She said she wanted to or was taking baths with her dad. M:I think it may be more appropriate to make her aware that she's being influenced or her original idea was at least. She's someone easily affected by her friends.

It's not that she wants to take a bath with her dad because he loves him, but rather her friend mentioned it, and so she feels the same way about her father.

The feeling of "love" is rather transient, or that's how it is after all, and it can easily change to a feeling of disgust.

If she's in her 3rd year of junior high, then she could easily fall in love with a boy her age, and then might think, "Why am I taking baths with such a disgusting old man?" (laughs). Everyone:(laughs)

M:People will eventually realize these things on their own accord. The father is really thinking he should probably decline, but may be thinking that things will fall into place on their own. It is because of her friend originally anyway.

So, if the situation were different, and say, her friend did something that would dirty her hands, then she may end up copying her in that regard too.

L'gosseux d'bois Ep 128 - Je fabrique un système de filtration de poussière pour l'atelier - Duration: 17:29.

Hi, on The Woodpecker this week , I'm making a dust fiterinng system.

I want to put two dust filters; one on each side of the air intake, just like this.

This will look just like that;

the only thing I need to do is to glue all the pieces in a L shape.

When the paint is dry, I remove the masking tape and spray one coat of varnish on top of everything,

even on the inside.

Now that the finish is dry, I can prepare myself for the final assembly.

I begin by marking the placement of the blowers' fixing screws and drill some pilot holes;

but I don't screw them in place yet.

Then the holes for the bottom of the filters.

I also staple some screen in front of the blowers' output.

If you're asking yourself why I install some screen there, well, I sometime have birds inside the shop; this might be cute, but it's also messy.

One plug is always hot and the other can be turned off or on with a switch;

just in case I need to change my setup in the future.

They work great and because of them, you'll be able to see me, probably even for several more years, on The Woodpecker.

The Next BIG Opportunity In Software Development - Duration: 9:20.

Hey, what's up?

John Sonmez from simpleprogrammer.com.I

have a question about the next opportunity in software development.

When will it appear?

This question is from David and he says, "I just saw your video on "Will Developer Jobs

Disappear."

You can check out he's talking about here, "In which you said that some people miss

the opportunity on Wordpress plugins and Apple apps.

My question is how do we know if and when the next opportunity is?"

Additional info: "I'm 59 and can't afford to waste time missing opportunities or going

in the wrong direction."

Gosh, this is such a hard one to answer.

I'm actually reading a book right now.

I haven't actually finished the book.

I'll do a review when I'm done.

It's called—let me think about this for a second, Inevitable.

Inevitable.

You can check out the book here.

Okay?

Now, in this book, he actually addresses this question.

It's kind of interesting because he talks about how like there was essentially the gold

strike for when the web first came on and you had the dotcoms, right?

He has a story where he says he went to—he talked to ABC and he said you need to get

one of your nerd guys in the IT or whatever downstairs to go and register ABC.com because

you want to get that.

It was actually free to register domains at the time.

He said he checked back a couple weeks later and ABC.com had not registered or ABC had

not registered ABC.com.

He was saying how so many developers are like, "Oh, I wish I could be back in that time when

you can just put up a web app or put up a storefront and sell something online or back

when YouTube first started.

Man, you know how easy it would be to grow an audience or grow a channel then."

He says that now is the most—is the best time that people are going to look back today

and say, "Oh, it would have been so great to be a web developer, to be a developer in

2016.

There was so much opportunity there."

I think his point really is that there is always that.

We're always going to have that.

We just don't know where those things are, but there are some ways that we can find and

some indications of where things are going to go.

One thing I would say about this is that you have to look for things that are high barrier

to entry.

Well, before we get into that—well, yeah.

Let's talk about how that applies backwards in time, right?

So everyone says, "Oh, I would love to be on the Internet and I would have loved to

have been creating an application or being a developer in like 1980 or 1990, before everyone

got all the domain names and made SaaS apps and sold stuff and I could have made so much

money."

Yes, true.

You're around maybe, some of you, but guess what, guess what the web was like in 1980

or let's say 1990 because in 1980 it was too infantile.

Let's say 1990.

There's definitely some opportunity there, right?

The web was like—you didn't have tools.

Like creating a web application, because I remember—heck, I was creating web applications

way back when I was like 10 years old for like—I was doing it for fun or for the military.

I had like a little internship job and I was hand coding HTML using hotdog or using Notepad.

There weren't tools for doing this or for easily deploying this.

We had CGI applications and we wrote Perl scripts to handle payments for PayPal, and

stuff like that.

It wasn't easy like it wasn't like you can do now where you can buy a subscription to

Shopify and you can sell whatever you want online and you have _____ [inaudible 00:04:04]

and all this.

Creating that application—there was high barriers to entry.

Same thing, let's say, YouTube, right?

A lot of YouTubers today say, "Oh, shit.

If I could have been a YouTuber like when YouTube first came out, I don't even know

when that was, but even like 10 years ago, it would have been so awesome.

I should have done that or I could have been PewDiePie."

The thing is the barrier to entry was so high, right?

Like shooting video, now we all have in our pockets we've got 1080—we could shoot a

4K video.

It's crazy and sound and everything and we can upload it, we've got the bandwidth to

do that.

But back then when YouTube first came out, we didn't have—it was hard.

It was really hard.

There was a high barrier to entry.

Same thing with the App Store, when Apple first opened the App Store, it wasn't easy

to develop iOS apps.

There weren't tutorials.

No one taught you how to do it.

There weren't frameworks and tools.

You had to go through the cryptic Apple developer stuff.

It was also a gamble.

You didn't even know if it's going to work.

It wasn't popular, right?

Same thing when Android first came out.

All of these opportunities, they have one thing in common which is that there's as high

barrier to entry, same thing with Wordpress plugins, right?

Also, it was an unknown, uncharted territory.

No one knew whether it was going to be popular or not.

To answer your question, there's plenty of opportunities right now.

I mean some people say VR is the space.

I know a guy right now that is making a bunch of VR games and he's making a fortune making

VR games because he is jumping on that space and it's hard to get into it right now.

He's figured it out so he's overcome that.

Not everyone can develop VR stuff.

He's overcome that barrier of entry.

He's also working on this unproven technology at this point.

If it skyrockets, he's going to do really well.

It could fail and he could have wasted some time.

I wouldn't call it a waste of time.

If you're looking for that next big thing, look for the things that are high barrier

to entry and that are not popular right now but have a chance and put a horse in this

game.

Put a horse in this race.

Put a horse in this race.

Put a horse in this race and see which one wins.

That's the best bet that I can give you and be extremely prolific.

If I could predict the future, if I knew where that was, that's what I would be doing right

now.

Sometimes though, I will say that there is a benefit in this technology space to being

not the first to market but being second to market.

Microsoft has completely developed their strategy on not being first to market.

What they do is they let the competitors make stuff.

Then they figure out a way to improve it and make it much better and then they either buy

it, buy out the competitors or they ship the version.

That didn't work out for them with the phones, granted, but it did work out with a lot of

things that they've done, a lot of technologies that they've developed.

We'll see what actually happens with the phones with Microsoft because they're not done yet.

There's still some opportunity there.

I think we'll see some surprising things.

My point is this.

If you're looking right now to find out what the next big thing is, pick something that

has a high barrier to entry that has a good chance of taking off and start being prolific

on it.

That's one option or the second option is to pick something that's already somewhat

successful or popular, right?

For example, I still did well blogging and as a YouTuber, even though I came into the

game late, technically late, because I was extremely prolific on the platform and I dedicated

the time.

If I had been early, it would have taken less effort to make as much traction.

I was able to bet on a sure thing by making up for it, by doing hard work and being more

prolific.

You kind of got one of those two tracks.

You can be on the cutting bleeding edge and do the high barrier to entry thing or you

can kind of follow the thing that you know is already working that you kind of already

missed the gold rush on it, but there's still profits to be mined there.

The people that got into bitcoin—I mean we can—I could throw examples all-day long.

The people who first were mining bitcoin, they can make a fortune, but the people who

came along later and created the—bought the GPU setups and started their mining operations

just a little bit later, they also did really, really well.

Now, if you try to come into it now, it's almost too late.

Even there, there's still probably some opportunity.

You just got to figure out what the angle is and how things are going to change.

I definitely recommend checkout that book like I said.

It's called Inevitable.

That will give you some ideas, but it's hard.

If you can predict it, if you can predict where the gold rush is, then that's amazing.

I guarantee, wherever the next gold rush is it's a place where there's extremely high

barrier to entry.

That's the only hint I could give you at that.

If I knew where it was, I would be working on that right now.

I don't think it's Snapchat.

I'll give you that.

All right, I'll talk to you next time.

Oh, before I forget, click that Subscribe button because you don't want to miss in

case I do figure it out, I'll be revealing ito n this channel.

You better subscribe so I could tell you where that next gold rush is.

All right, I'll talk to you next time.

Take care.
