Hi everybody!

Welcome back.

Today, I'm going to show you guys how to get this Rihanna inspired makeup tutorial, from

her recent March Harper's Bazaar cover.

So, the first thing that I'm going to do, is I'm going to take my Morphe Kathleen Lights

Palette, and take this brownish shade right here, and I'm going to start by blending this

into the inner corner of the upper crease, and sort of, up, along the brow bone.

I'm also going to pull that though the socket line of my crease, and sort of blend that

up, as my transition shade, and then I will also kind of bring it out, onto the outer

corner, and flick it out a little, just to elongate the eye.

And, I'm going to kind of turn my brush upwards, just to make sure that everything is nice

and blended out, and seamless.

I'm also going to take that color, and sort of bring that down onto the lower lash line,

drawing a straight line out from the outer corner, down onto the lower lash line, and

then, I will start to blend that underneath the lash line as well.

I'm being pretty loose with this, because Rihanna's look was very hazed out.

I'm also going to take this deeper red brown shade, and I'm going to put this directly

into the socket line of the crease, right underneath where I put that transition shade,

and just kind of define the eyes, so that way, when I put on the lid color, everything

is more seamless, and blended out.

Then, I'm just going to bring that down onto the lid, and sort of pack that onto the lid

shade.

I'm also going to take this black eye shadow, on an angled liner brush, and I'm just going

to gently pat or stamp this directly onto the upper lash line, just for a little bit

of liner.

I don't want to go too crazy, but I do want to have more definition around the eyes.

Then, I'm going to take House of Lashes Featherette, and put these onto the upper lash line.

I'm going to grab my eyeliner from Maybelline.

This one is brown, and I'm going to bring this on the inner waterline of the lower lash

line, just to bring that brown color in there.

I'm going to take my Tarte mascara, and just put this on the upper and lower lash line,

just to finish off the eyes.

Moving onto the rest of the face, I'm going to go ahead, and take my Hoola Bronzer from

Benefit Cosmetics, and I'm going to contour with this, using a buffing brush.

I'm going to bring that right into the contouring area of the cheekbones, and just go back and

forth, to get a really harsh contour with it.

I'm also going to bring that upwards onto the temples, and the forehead, just to warm

up the skin.

I'm going to take my Too Faced Love Flush Baby Love Blush, and using a tapered highlighter

brush, just gently put this onto the apples of the cheeks, along that contouring area.

Then, I'm going to take my Mary Loumanizer as my highlight, and I'm going to pack this

onto the tops of the cheekbones, to get a really harsh look.

I'm also going to gently bring this down the nose, and on the cupid's bow, as well as the

chin, and the forehead.

For lips, I'm going to start by taking my Meet Matte Hughes, in the shade, Charming

from The Balm Cosmetics, and I'm basically just going to use this as a lip liner.

I'm not going to fill in the lips with this.

So, I'm just going to kind of line the lips with this, in a solid, thick layer.

Rihanna's lips were kind of like, geometric in a way.

It's hard to tell, but she had a really dark lip liner, and then, she had some different

colors in the inside of her lips.

So, I'm just going to start by lining, then I'm going to take MAC Twig Lipstick, and fill

in the rest of the lips with this.

I'm going to try not to blend out that edge too much.

I just want to put this right into the center.

I'm going to take a Chromatic Lipstick, from Milani, and I'm going to put this between

where I lined the lips, and where I put that Twig lip, just to give a little bit of a highlight

to the lips.

Take a light grey yarn.

And work 4 chains (ch) in a first row.

And work 3 single crochets (sc) into the 2nd loop from the hook.

Working into the single loop.

Then along a chain I'm working 2 single crochets (sc).

And I'm working 3 single crochets (sc) into the last loop again.

And now along another side of a chain - working 2 single crochets (sc).

I'm not doing slip stitch (sl st) here.

And next row I'l start working into the first loop.

Row 3: 1 increase (inc).

I.e. 2 single crochets (sc) into the one loop.

Then 1 single crochet (sc) into the next loop.

Then 1 increase (inc).

Then 2 single crochets (sc).

Then 3 increases (inc).

And 2 single crochets (sc).

Now, row 4 - I'll be working in front loop.

Because I'm working wrong side out.

Row 4: 7 single crochets (sc).

Done, then 3 decreases (dec).

Decreases are done in front loops, that's why I'm picking first half loop...

Then second...

And working them together.

Doing decrease (dec) again.

And one more decrease (dec).

And working 2 single crochets (sc) next.

Row 5: working in both loops - 6 single crochets (sc).

Then 1 decrease (dec).

Decreases I'm doing in back loops.

That's why I'm firstly picking second half loop...

Then first half loop...

And working them together.

Then working 1 single crochet (sc).

1 decrease (dec) again.

And 1 single crochets (sc) more.

Now working as per pattern...

Done.

Working 1 chain (ch).

Pull the yarn out.

Leave an short ending and cut it off.

Tighten an knot.

You may leave an shorter ending, and put it inside.

And we may remove the marker yarn.

Insert this yarn into the needle.

Insert the needle through those holes.

Fix the yarn.

And insert the yarn inside.

Cut the yarn off.

And we've got first leg!

Doing the second one...

...but do not cut this yarn!

You may fix only the bottom one.

So, we've got such legs!

An article in the US magazine, Rolling Stone, leads us to Phil Heilberg...

...a former Wall Street trader who made his fortune in the golden 1990s...

...as a commodities trader at Salomon Brothers...

...and the insurance company AIG.

Heilberg was smart enough to step out before the stock markets collapsed.

He then shifted his activities to areas where he saw new opportunities.

Land in Africa.

Who is the man dubbed by Rolling Stone magazine: The Capitalist of Chaos.

And who's leasing a tract of land one fifth the size of Holland.

...in South Sudan. A country, that at the time we read the article, didn't even exist.

After extensive email correspondence, Heilberg agrees to meet us.

So on Easter Monday, we meet up with him at the Regency Hotel in Manhattan.

Phil Heilberg is concerned about his image.

He feels the press's portrayal of him is always too one-sided:

Phil the big land grabber.

Now he finally wants to show that in reality it's a different world out there.

At the end of our first meeting, Phil invites us to go with him to Africa.

So we can judge for ourselves.

6 weeks later 9 July 2011 independence day

General Paulino Matip plays a key role in Phil's business plan.

This local warlord who has now been promoted...

...to deputy commander-in-chief of the South Sudan army...

...is an awesome power broker...

...in the new republic's precarious political balance.

four months later

We're still waiting for the people who were supposed to help us.

I'll let you know when they come.

Today, they don't even have any food for the children.

Nothing to eat, they can't help us. Where can we go?

Give me your telephone number.

Then I'll phone when they come.

We soon discover that Phil isn't the only person hunting for cheap land...

...in South Sudan. Almost 10 percent of the new country's total surface area...

...turns out to be in the process of being leased to foreign investors.

Lawyer David Deng investigated this.

We came here in 1999 to grow our crops.

But when the new SPLM government came...

...the SPLA soldiers beat us up.

We fled to Juba.

Where we stayed for three years.

When we came back last year, our land had been confiscated.

Things are not going well for us now.

We have nowhere to grow our crops.

We don't get help from anyone.

We don't have food.

We started out here in 1997.

Then Paulino Matip's soldiers came...

...and they raped the women and attacked people.

Everyone fled.

When we were still able to grow crops here, we had lots of food.

We had to transport our harvest...

...to town by truck.

And with the profits from the harvest...

...we could send our children to school.

Now we're in a predicament. The children have been uprooted...

...and will turn into thieves.

We finally get to meet Phil's business partners.

General Paulino Matip and his sons.

They're entrenched at their compound in Juba with a private 1500-strong army.

We're allowed to ask the general four questions.

Questions we had to submit beforehand and which Phil personally approved.

There are lots of things...

...that his company can provide.

He wants to mine for gold.

He wants...

...to drill for gas and oil.

He wants to construct roads.

And he wants...

...to go into agriculture.

That's for Mr Philip to decide.

He decides what we should start on.

They're now going to ask the last question.

That's up to the president.

We've never set a deadline.

But I will visit him again to discuss it.

After all that waiting we decide to take a look for ourselves...

...at the area where Phil has leased his land: Unity State.

Mayom County.

It's in the disputed border region between North and South Sudan.

We have a meeting with Mayom's chiefs.

And we wonder if they are aware of Phil's plans.

This is the first plot.

This is the first plot.

And this is the second plot in Mayom County.

Where is it exactly? - In Kaykang.

Kaykang is near my village.

It goes along to the border.

All the way to Abiemnom.

And all the way to Chambad.

They've never come to us.

I've never heard of them.

Never heard of it. - From America.

How come the chiefs here know nothing about it?

The land's owned by the government but also by us, the inhabitants.

Land cannot be sold by one person. Everyone must decide.

They can't sell all that land. It's only possible...

...if everyone agrees.

Because if you sell everything, where are we meant to go?

The people who live here and who were born here?

One person can't sign a contract that concerns everyone.

Even our budget must be signed by all the representatives.

May I say something?

I'm the eldest of everyone here.

I even still have a father, who is older than me.

The first white person I ever met...

...and who came here was called Roger.

He was the first in Unity State to find oil.

When he started drilling...

...he could not find oil. His drill broke.

And because his drill had broken...

Then he called my father Mayang Tejik.

He said: To whom belongs this land?

My father said: It's my land.

Then my father brought a bull and killed it.

Then the drilling went well.

Then the oil came out. This was the first exploration of oil here...

...thanks to Roger.

Mayom County land cannot be sold by one person.

My father was born on this land, I was born here...

...my children were born here, so not even one inch of it can be sold.

Can You See Me? - Duration: 10:22.

Vsauce, I'm Jake and you can't see me right now even though I am directly in front

you.

Since there is no light in the room there is nothing in the visible spectrum for you

to see, but that doesn't mean that there is nothing here.

Let me show you…

Using a FLIR Thermal Imaging camera we get a visual representation of thermal radiation,

or infrared radiation, the heat transfer by the release of photons.

Thermal cameras report a temperature value, the effect of temperature.

Instead of seeing the visible light of an object, it estimates the infrared radiation

an object is emitting.

And you can tell that my nose is colder than the rest of my body and you can see everything

around me, because everything above 0 kelvin, a temperature that we have never achieved

or witnessed, glows.

But generally we don't see it since the emitted photons are not in our visible range.

Also it looks just like Predator vision from the movie Predator which is what inspired

me to borrow this camera in the first place.

Let's turn the lights on for a second.

Ok, everything looks normal again.

And I have a refreshing, cold beverage in an aluminum can.

You know it is cold because I just said it was but if we switch back to thermal mode,

you can see the extreme temperature disparity between my body and the can.

Also I just have poor hand circulation which is why they are cold.

It looks darker, and because it is reading the intensity, the label on the can is completely

missing.

If I rub it on my face, the temperature change is immediately noticeable, it's almost like

painting with temperature, whereas when I rub it on my face without the camera...I just

look like I have a thing for cans.

Thermal cameras are incredibly fun so we are going to do some experiments with it but before

we do, let's talk about what you are seeing, or should I say, what you aren't.

The electromagnetic spectrum is the range of all light that exists.

Two of the fundamental properties of light are frequency, the number of waves that pass

by in a second, and then wavelength; the distance from the peak of one wave to the next.

T The less energetic the wave, the longer the wavelength.

The shorter the wavelength, the more energetic the wave.

The most energetic being: gamma rays, x-rays, ultraviolet, and then our small spectrum of

visible light, then things slow down and we have infrared, microwave, and radiowave.

When an object gets hot enough it starts to bleed into the spectrum we see, moving from

infrared to visible.

You can see this with the hot door handle in my video Could You Survive Home Alone.

It becomes incandescent, it hits the Draper Point, 977F, the temperature at which almost

all solid materials glow.

And the infrared spectrum isn't the only range technology has allowed us to witness.

There are telescopes that can see gamma rays, x-rays, ultraviolet wavelengths, microwave

and radio waves.

And when we see these images, we are seeing false color, a representation of the invisible

spectrum but it doesn't show what the star, nebula, or solar system would actually looks

like to our naked eye since we are being shown parts of the spectrum we'd never see.

Take this image by the Chandra X-Ray Observatory of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. This

is a false color image.

What is actually captured is this….3 images in the soft, medium, and hard x-ray band.

You can even download some raw x-ray files from the Chandra website and create your own

false color composites if you wanna give it a go.

Back to Thermal cameras, there is a common misconception that they allow us to see through

objects.

For example if we look at this wall we can see the studs (HOT HOT HOT STUDS), the wooden

beams, that are on the inside, when really we are just seeing the difference in heat

between the wall and the beams.

We can get a glimpse at an object's emissivity, that is how well an object emits thermal radiation.

A perfect emitter is Black Body, an object which absorbs all light.

It doesn't reflect it or allow light to pass through.

And similarly to absolute zero, it is something we have yet to witness or achieve.

Let's try something else...

If I take a mylar blanket, and cover myself with it, you can't see me anymore because

even though this is a thin plastic sheet, it is heat reflective so I'm hidden.

But if we take a normal plastic sheet like this black square, like this plastic one here,

you can start to see my heat radiate through the object.

Pretty neat!

Now that is pretty cool- But ya know what's cooler than that?

What's cooler than that Ian?

Trash.

Garbage The gross stuff.

So Ian this is just actual garbage.

Or is it?

Hey Vsauce, Michael here!

The plastic this bag is made of is opaque to visible light, you can't see through

it, but it is transparent to infrared light.

The infrared radiation coming off my skin passes right through it into the camera.

Now that's what I call garbageducational.

Sort of a rubbage pun though.

So as you can see you can't really see through Michael's glasses...they look more like

sunglasses.

Pretty Interesting.

Glass acts differently in thermal vision.

Normally if I close this glass door...you can still see me it's transparent.

But if we open the door and close it again while looking through the thermal camera it

becomes opaque, I'm no longer visible.

And in fact you can see our wonderful cameraman Eric Langlay on the other side.

Glass is designed to pass visible wavelengths and block thermal or infrared for insulation.

Not only that, but just like the Mylar blanket, you're seeing the reflection of the glass

as well as the window glazing.

Quick side note: If you can't see glass through a thermal camera, then how can you

see anything since traditionally lenses are made from glass?

Well, that's because thermal lenses use the element germanium instead of the traditional

glass lens.

So hiding behind a window would be a great way to hide from something with thermal or

infrared vision.

But, the movie Predator tells us that there is another way.

So to recreate the scene in Predator where Arnold Schwarzenegger covers himself in mud

and makes himself invisible to the Predator's thermal vision we need a few things: three

strapping young man, a bucket full of mud, and Ian shirtless.

I can do that.

But before we begin there are two other things we wanted to show you.

A balloon, but when it is inflated you can see through it.

Hey.

Isn't that incredible.

Look at that.

And then another fun thing to do, if you wanna "draw with heat", grab any kind of surface,

in this case the Curiosity Box, and as you can see it is very colorful has images and

stuff but in thermal vision there is nothing there until.

Oh yeah.

That friction is making some heat, I can't see it though.

But now you can!

Maybe put your hair back a little bit.

Whatever you do don't warn me.

Yeah know I hear when you're painting a wall you want to sandpaper it before it.

Maybe we coulda done something like that to me.

Is it cold?

Just a touch.

Let's get ya on the ground.

Alright.

Oh that's great.

The face we need to cover the face.

Yeah, make sure you do the face.

That is really satisfying slapping the mud on.

We'll keep an air hole.

Should we get a straw?

Is this like a certified mudbath?

A certified Vsauce mudbath?

So it kind of worked!

Everything covered in this mud mixture is hiding his body temperature and you can see

the parts that aren't are still radiating.

But it was pretty effective, but that could also be because this is pretty cold right

Ian?

Yeah, it is fairly cold.

This really isn't very scientific I just wanted to cover Ian in mud so we did it.

So this was a fun experiment right guys?
