Welcome to a new episode of "Heart News",
the news series about the cooperation between the University of Applied Sciences FH Joanneum Graz
and the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017.
Today we will switch over to our correspondent Julia in Bad Gleichenberg.
There she will talk to students and teachers about the Healthy Athletes program.
Exactly, today I am reporting from the FH Joanneum's quarters in Bad Gleichenberg.
I will find out how the health care courses contribute to the Healthy Athletes program.
You are a clinical director for the Health Promotion program in line with the Healthy Athletes program.
Can you tell us what the Health Promotion program is in general?
It is one of the stations of the Healthy Athletes program.
The goal of the Health Promotion program is to identify or eliminate certain risk factors.
Therefore, we perform medicinal screenings with the athletes.
For example, we measure the bone density,
we ask the athletes about their eating and drinking habits,
their smoking habits,
sunscreen habits,
we measure their blood pressure and not to forget we ask about their regular physical exercise.
What exactly will be the tasks of the FH Joanneum and the course of dietetics?
We are mainly involved in interviewing the athletes about their eating and drinking habits and,
I forgot to list this before,
in measuring the composition of the body or so to say the Body Mass Index
which provides information about the proportion between size and weight.
We also help at the nutrition-education station.
Athletes from more than 100 countries will participate in the games and surely not all of them speak German or English.
How do you solve this problem?
The nonverbal communication is an important factor here.
When doing the interviews about eating, drinking, smoking and sunscreen habits we work a lot with pictures.
And we hope that the promised interpreters will be there as well to help us.
I have heard that it can be problematic when talking to athletes about healthy nutrition.
For example, Coca Cola is a sponsor
so when advising athletes that soft drinks are not very healthy,
how do you manage to not devalue Coca Cola because of their sponsorship?
That is true, that is a critical point.
We have found ways to solve this problem,
for example we have made mockups of groceries or bottles that not especially point to one brand,
in this case Coca Cola,
so that everybody or at least the athlete's tutors can put this into context
and understand that for example Coca Cola is also one of those.
Within the Healthy Athletes program, you will realize the program "Strong Minds - Strong Bodies".
Can you tell me what this program is about in general?
This program is a pilot scheme which has been realized twice in America so far.
The goal of the Strong Minds project is to show athletes how to cope with stress
and to find the best practice for each of them to overcome stress.
What exactly will you and the students of the course of occupational therapy do at the Special Olympics?
The course of occupational therapy will take care of the Strong Bodies - Strong Minds stations.
There will be six of these stations.
The athletes will have the possibility to try out everything and in the end,
they can decide what method of overcoming stress is the best for them.
We hope that they will transfer this into their daily life
and not only use these techniques during the competitions.
Hello Patrick, Julia and Eva from the course of dietetics.
What will you do at the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017?
We will be part of the Healthy Athletes program.
Therefore, we will ask the athletes about their eating habits and check if they could improve something,
generally we will try to teach them about healthy nutrition.
How will you do this? Are there workshops?
The athletes will come to our stations.
First, we will measure and weigh them and then calculate their BMI.
Then they will walk on to the next station and so on.
For example, there will be a station with small cards with pictures of fruits and vegetables
where the athletes have to talk about these items.
There will be several similar stations.
Who will participate? The whole dietetics course or just particular classes?
We had the possibility to register in advance.
The three of us have already been at the Pre-Games.
I think that now almost the whole course has registered.
Hello Mrs. Schwarzl, thanks for taking your time.
You will be part of the Healthy Athletes program, more specific of the Health Promotion program.
Therefore, you did come up with another special idea. Can you tell us more about this?
In addition to the scheduled stations of the Health Promotion program we will offer two extra stations.
There it is important to us that the athletes can actually do something and that they can take something home.
These two stations focus on body-cognition.
Is there a special target group or is this for everyone?
No, it is for everybody, but the attendance is not compulsory as it is at the screenings.
Everybody who wants to, can participate.
We also thought that athletes could come to our two stations when there are queue times at other stations.
You also provide several tools that are handy for dressing, we have seen and tried them before.
Can you tell us more about that?
That is the second part of our program.
There will be a workshop which we will offer together with the students from the course of dietetics.
The workshop will be about daily life, especially about dressing.
At the Pre-Games we noticed that some of the athletes have difficulties or restrictions with dressing.
That's it from Bad Gleichenberg and now back to Graz!
Thanks to Julia in Bad Gleichenberg for this information about the Healthy Athletes program.
Now we are at the end of another "Heart News" episode
and we hope that you will join us again for the next episode.
It will be about the course of logopedia.
Have a nice time and see you next time! Goodbye!
