CREATIVITY BY KARLIE KLOSS

I think creativity is a mindset.

It is a way of approaching any problem.

Or any challenge.

It takes me into classrooms to teach girls

to express their creativity, through writing code.

I had to develop that confidence in my own skills

to be creative in my own true way.

I'm Karlie Kloss,

and creativity helps me make a difference in the world.

How To Crochet A Scarf - Duration: 15:40.

in this tutorial i show you how to make

the cute scarf with fringes. This is one

of my absolute favorites to wear, it's so warm

and squishy and i really like the random

fluffiness that the fringes add to the

whole look- It's also really fun and easy

project to make, and since you're using

your 12 mm for this scarf you'll be

finished in no time. If you need to

adjust the width of the scarf because

you're using a smaller or a thinner yarn, you can

do that too.

Just make sure to chain uneven number

of foundations single crochets and go from

there..... for materials you'll need some

super bulky weight yarn. I used

approximately eight skeins of yarn .....you'll

need a 12 millimeter crochet hook or a US

O/17 crochet hook. You will also need the

lid from an icebox or a similar object.

You'll need scissors and yarn needle.... and

just to show you lid that I was talking

about - i used this lid for my fringes. I

definitely recommend using a lid that is

15 centimeters across or approximately

nine inches across ....this little was a

little too narrow I found. Now let's get

started! :-) First you start by making a

slip knot, and then you'll be making a

foundation single crochet row of 15..... start

by chaining two and now insert your hook

into the first chain that you made, yarn over

over and pull up a loop and yarn over

and pull through one loop on your hook

and yarn over and pull through two loops

on your hook.

That's your first foundation single

crochet. And now you're going into the

stitch in the opposite side of your hook....

yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over pull

through one loop, yarn over pull through

two loops.... and as you can see if you turn

it, now we have made two foundation single

crochets...... go into the opposite side, yarn over

pull up a loop, pull through one,

pull through two...... 3 foundation single

crochets find the opposites it stitch,

yarn over, pull up a loop pull through one,

pull through two..... and continue on like

this until you have a foundation single

crochet row of 15.... and now for row to

you'll chain 2, and work a double crochet

in the same stitch.

And then you'll simply double crochet

in every stitch across - and when you get to

the end you'll have a total of fifteen

double crochets ....not counting the

beginning chain two.... that does not count

as a stitch.

And for the next row, you're going to chain one

and turn and this will be a bubble

stitch row..... start by making a single

crochet in the first ....treble crochet in

the next, chain one and a single crochet

in the next stitch .....and again make a

treble crochet into the next stitch and

chain one and then single crochet in the

next and this is just the pattern you will

be repeating all across and i'll meet

you at the end. And at the end of the row you

will be working into the two last

stitches but not the chain two at the end...

but these two.... so treble stitch in the

next.... chain one single and a single crochet in the

last double crochet . Like this.

And for the next row you're going to

chain two....

and then you're going to make a double

crochet in the same stitch - so in that

last single crochet from the previous

row.... and a double crochet in the next

stitch...... and in the next single crochet.....

and in the next stitch.....so you'll be double

crocheting and each stitch across until

you have a total of fifteen double

crochets, not counting the first chain

two of the round, of the row..... like so

And the next row,

it will also be a double crochet row, so

just going to chain two .....and turn, then

work a double crochet into that same first

stitch.... and into each stitch across.....

and then remember when you get to the

end you're not going to work into the

very last chain two space at the end of

the row - just going to ignore that and

then chain two, and turn...... and you should

have 15 double crochets across. And now you're

going to repeat the exact same thing for

this row..... chain two..... double crochet in the

same and in every stitch across .....and now the

next row is going to be a bubble row...... so

chain one, make a single crochet in the

first stitch..... and make treble crochet in

the next stitch..... chain one .......make a single

crochet in the next...... treble crochet in

the next, chain one. Single crochet in the

next - and so on

just repeat this pattern across.....

and when you get to the end of the row,

make a single crochet in the last stitch,

not double crocheting, not working in that

last chain 2 . And for the next row, chain

two, work a double crochet into the first stitch,

double crochet into the bubble stitch

double crochet into a single crochet

double crochet into the bubble stitch.....

and just keep on doing that across.... so as

you might have noticed, the pattern is

starting to repeat itself....

just continue all across until you have

all 15 double crochet's.....

and for the next row you're going to

chain two, turn and now you're going to

work 15 double crochets across..... and

you're going to do this for both row

nine and row ten..... and here comes the

bubble row, so as usual, chain one. single

crochet in the first .....then make a treble

crochet in the next...... chain one and a

single crochet in the next and just

continue on like this all across.....

and now you're just going to repeat this

pattern, so alternate between one row of

bubble crochets - or stitches - and three

rows of double crochets....... and when you get

the desired length, then you're going to

finish off with a row of single crochets,

so just chain one and work a single

crochet in every stitch across..... and you

should end with 15 seven single crochets.....

and now just chain 1 and pull up your loop and

cut your yarn...

just weaving in ends that you have.....

and now it's time to make your fringes,

so bring out your lid, or whatever you

found to wrap your yarn around, and just

start wrapping around ..........and then cut the

one side ....and this will leave you with these

fringes..... just grab approx. three to

four strands of yarn....... fold them on the

middle, insert your hook into the stitch

and pull through the yarn that you folded on

the middle, then yarn over one then pull all of

the ends through that loop whole at once and

if you're struggling .....

you can use smaller hook to

make it easier or you can use fewer

strands......

i'm just going to show you a few more ....so

again you just take the fringes and

you fold them on the middle .....insert your hook

and pull through.... and pull all ends

through the loop.....and then just comb your

fringes and trim if needed, and repeat

for the other side...... and then you are done,

you have made your scarf :-)

2017, the Year of the Rooster.

This ruthless war continues.

Singing Battle!

The 8th match!

They'll be fighting hard to be the final winner.

Coach Park Suhong.

Coach Kim Sooro.

Don't do that!

Coach Muzie.

Challenging them,

the icon of human victory.

The 2016 KBS Entertainment Awards.

From "Two Days and One Night," Kim Jongmin.

KBS Entertainment Awards grand prize winner,

Coach Kim Jongmin!

Also, the loyalist of Singing Battle,

our host, Namkoong Min!

Hello, everyone.

It's the 8th match of Singing Battle.

The battle continues during the Seollal holiday.

According to article 3 clause 2 of

the Korean music sports federation's regulations,

winners of the KBS Entertainment Awards

are required to appear as a coach on Singing Battle.

That's why Kim Jongmin is here.

It's the first I've heard about it.

- You didn't hear about this? / - No.

It's written behind your trophy.

Really?

No one told me.

Suhong, do you consider him to be your rival?

He's not my rival.

I'm jealous. I acknowledge him.

He won the grand prize so

he has to fulfill his duty.

He should pay for the gifts for everyone

on this program since it's the Seollal special.

You didn't know?

- I have to pay with my own money? / - Yes.

You didn't know?

It's my first time here so I feel a little awkward

but it doesn't take long for me to get settled.

Have you watched this show often?

Yes, often.

How many time?

- Let's see... / - Winners shouldn't lie.

Which episode was the most memorable?

I've watched many episodes.

Today, I have an excellent team.

I'm totally confident.

Okay then, Coach Park Suhong.

I don't know how this will sound but

I want a bloodbath.

In particular, Kim Sooro...

- I... / - You're out of time.

- Muzie. / - Thank you.

- Thank you. / - Who are you to cut me off?

Please turn off his mic.

Okay, Muzie!

I'm so mad.

It's now the Year of the Rooster.

I'm the only coach born in the Year of the Rooster.

- Were you born in 1969? / - I see.

What? No, 1981.

For all those born in the Year of the Roosters,

I'm going to provide the year with a great start.

- Okay, Coach Kim Sooro. / - Yes?

My family used to own a chicken farm.

I see.

The Year of the Rooster means the world to me.

Coach Suhong, today...

Don't worry.

- You're keeping him in check. / - A fire rooster's year.

Go be a rooster.

- Let's meet today's singers then. / - Nice.

First, the legend of the Entertainment Awards.

- Coach Kim Jongmin. / - Yes?

Who have you brought?

They were famous in the 2000s,

just like myself.

Let's meet them right now.

Team, please enter!

Introducing Coach Kim Jongmin's team.

(Surprised)

(Grins)

Lim Hyoungjun.

Lee Jihye.

Cheon Myeonghun.

My team's good at many things.

We're the multi-entertainer team.

They performed around the same time as I did.

I'm totally familiar with their style.

Even I'm looking forward to them.

They're talented and have great potential.

I'm confident that we'll win.

After I was eliminated twice,

I asked to be invited on the show again.

I said I couldn't leave like this.

I think it was a real honor

to perform on the stage with talented singers.

It's an honor to my family name.

This has become my major artwork.

To be honest, I want to come 1st just once.

I'm not going to be funny.

That's my objective.

For the viewers during the Seollal holiday,

I want to create an entertaining performance.

If you look at our team structure,

we can dance, we can act,

we're good at variety shows too.

So we're aiming to win today.

I don't want to be funny.

I want to be serious in terms of music.

That's why I'm here.

Also, I'm the only coach

with a singing background here.

- Is Muzie a comedian then? / - How about me?

- My junior! / - What did you think I was?

That's right. You're a singer.

Me too!

Suhong released an album, right?

He released an album with Park Kyunglim.

Who doesn't have a musical background here?

- You shouldn't say that. / - I released a trot album.

You've offended us.

Don't speak like that because you've won an award.

I think we can sue him if we want to.

- I don't have a job then? / - It's defamation!

I'm sorry.

Muzie, sorry.

Jongmin has made a sincere apology.

- Coach Park Suhong. / - Yes?

Who's on your team today?

I'm really curious.

They share the same blood as me.

They do their best to deliver information.

They're here to get revenge today.

Really?

Introducing the best in Korea!

KBS announcers!

Team, please enter!

Introducing Coach Park Suhong's team!

No way, I can't believe it.

(Warriors rise from the dark)

Han Sangheon.

Lee Jeongmin.

The announcer who represents KBS...

Choi Seungdon!

Comedian or announcer?

People often asked that about me.

Announcers read their scripts because

they need to deliver information accurately.

There are no scripts, no lines here today.

You'll be able to see their real selves.

They're going to break free from their roles.

They're going to show the viewers

what they're really made of.

That's our strategy today.

Announcer Han Sangheon's outfit today...

He's not really dressed like an announcer.

- Is he here to fight? / - Isn't that cheating?

Sorry but is it okay if I answer that?

He's a member of the flesh club.

- Flesh club. / - He's showing off his knees.

Don't do that.

- That's so funny. / - How are you going to end that?

- How will you finish that? / - What?

- How will you save that joke? / - What do you mean?

I just felt like saying that. Sorry!

It was funny.

You sang hard on our first episode.

You received a great response.

Someone told me this.

I benefited the most from this show.

- Yes, I admit it. / - Because...

No one had any expectations

but I did surprisingly well.

I told my stylist this.

I said I wanted to look stylish.

They went overboard.

I think they took the concept too far.

I didn't know I'd look like this.

However, I'm determined.

The announcer team is definitely winning today.

I'm here to take over the Seollal special.

Let's just go ahead and meet my team.

I'm here to take over this stage.

- Okay. / - Bring them out.

Coach Kim Sooro's team.

Let's meet them now.

Team, please enter!

Introducing Coach Kim Sooro's team!

(Checks out)

Kang Seongjin.

Kim Sanho.

Lee Sumin.

Actors are good at everything.

Right.

- They... / - We think of singing as acting.

I'm going to compete with the spirit of sportsmanship.

I'm going to make the judges dance.

(Great character actor, Kang Seongjin is determined)

I'm going to do my best.

Let's do this!

- Seongjin. / - Yes?

Hello, it's been a long time.

You've known Coach Kim Sooro for 25 years.

You're famous for being best friends.

I hear you're close to Lim Hyoungjun too.

Hyoungjun said he didn't want to be on our team.

He said he was joining them.

We applauded and were elated.

I see.

I think Hyoungjun did that for his dream of

singing on stage with me.

My dreams aren't that petty.

I really...

I want to ask Seongjin and Hyoungjun this.

It's really dark in the studio.

Can you see okay?

I was shocked when I walked up the stairs.

I couldn't see the steps.

I've been here a few times so I walk by instinct.

Okay, the final team.

Coach Muzie, please introduce your team.

I think my team will receive the spotlight today.

My singers are global.

- Global? / - I'll give you a clue.

All of my singers are from Itaewon.

Itaewon?

Do they live in Itaewon?

They're all from Itaewon.

- They live in Itaewon? / - Yes.

Coach Muzie's team, please enter!

Introducing Coach Muzie's team!

(Shocked)

Their appearance is striking.

Daniel!

Greg!

Sayuri!

I wrote "Itaewon Freedom."

I wanted to put together a team like this.

Foreigners stay at home alone on Seollal.

It's lonely.

So I decided it'd be better if

we all got together and work.

I'm confident that I can do well today.

We're going to beat the Korean teams on Seollal.

We're confident.

Let's do it!

The heavens belong to us!

They wore hanbok for the holidays.

I love hanbok.

It's sexy.

- Stylish guy. / - It's sexy.

- I like the color. / - Right.

I'm sure many people know this

but could you please tell us

which country you come from?

Japan.

Sayuri's from Japan.

I'm from Germany.

You're from Germany.

- The U.S. / - You're from the U.S.

I've seen Greg sing a few times.

You're really good.

But as for the others,

I've never seen you sing before.

That's our strategy today.

Aside from Greg, you're probably

totally unaware as to how they'll sing.

Right.

I think that's going to work towards our advantage.

Sayuri and I are really close.

She sings at a lot of weddings.

I sang at Kim Jaeu's wedding.

People said they were really grateful.

They felt touched and cried.

Usually, the wedding singers...

- They're good singers, right? / - Yes.

- I'm looking forward to this. / - Yes.

Let me give you a clue about Sayuri.

She has an amazing sense of rhythm.

- You'll be shocked. / - I surprised myself.

- Really? / - Also, I rehearsed a lot.

I even took singing lessons.

They're so prepared. They're aiming for the finals.

The 2017 Seollal special of

Singing Battle!

The lucky box has been opened.

For the Seollal special,

a lucky box filled with gifts.

A mixed grains set.

We should play!

If they select the lucky box song,

the entire winning team receives the gift.

Today is a special episode so

music sports athletes will sit as our judges.

New judges are here!

13 members of the music society of

Korea National Sport University.

No wonder they're so handsome.

We've met before, right?

I know him. I saw him at a club.

It's not just about the voice.

Passion, performance and charisma

will all be judged.

Together with the lucky box filled with gifts,

which team will receive the glory of victory?

What's this?

- It's very natural. / - Is it Jongmin's?

(First time seeing me in person?)

I've never seen this before.

(Proud)

I want this.

Don't take it out.

You shouldn't touch it.

- Just observe. / - Just view it with your eyes.

He's worried that he'll lose it.

Did you really have to bring

the trophy you won last year to this show?

- When will you stop carrying it? / - Why?

- Always... / - Shouldn't you put it on display?

I want to carry it with me forever.

2017, the Year of the Rooster.

The Seollal special of Singing Battle.

Let me now announce the first song.

(The first song of the Seollal special is?)

- Over there. / - The title.

Please.

If you're confident about the song, tell me.

What?

I'm so nervous.

What is it?

"You Are the Only One" by Shim Shin.

(Famous for his sunglasses and gun dance)

"You Are the Only One."

- Shim Shin! / - ♪ You are the only... ♪

- Should we? / - It really suits Sangheon.

Sangheon.

(Who will win this battle?)

(Loser Kim Sanho, winner Han Sangheon)

We've won!

Han Sangheon has won by 8:5.

Congratulations.

Montepulciano, Italy: Tuscan Vino and Views - Duration: 4:49.

Tuscany is one of those regions

where it just makes sense to sleep outside the city.

And our farmhouse B&B

provides a great springboard for a world of side trips.

A short and scenic drive south

takes us through some of Italy's finest wine country.

This is the land of two beloved local wines,

Brunello di Montalcino

and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

The vineyards here produce some of the very best wines

in the world.

And travelers who call in advance

are welcome to visit and tour the wineries.

Beautifully tended vines

soak up the spring sun as hard-working vintners

hope that this year's vintage will be one to remember.

And over-looking it all is the hill town of Montepulciano.

The town's sleepy main piazza

is surrounded by a grab bag of architectural sites.

The medieval town hall resembles

nearby Florence's Palazzo Vecchio

a reminder that about 500 years ago,

Montepulciano allied itself with Florence.

The crenellations along the roof

were never intended to hide soldiers

they just symbolize power.

But the big central tower makes it clear

that the city's keeping an eye out in all directions.

[ Drums playing ]

For centuries, this town has celebrated

its independent spirit.

And today, these young people carry on that tradition

and entertain their visitors with a colorful ritual.

[ Drums continue playing ]

Being a wine-producing capital,

Montepulciano was built upon a honeycomb of wine cellars.

Palazzo Ricci sits atop

a particularly impressive series of cellars.

-Oh, Roberto!<i>Ciao!</i>

-Joining a vintner, we descend a long staircase.

Heading deep down into the hill

that Montepulciano is built upon,

the temperature noticeably drops,

and eventually, we end up

at street level of the lower town.

Climbing even further down,

we reach gigantic barrels

under even more gigantic vaults

and a chance to learn about the wine

that's aging here.

Rick: These are very big barrels. Enrico: Yeah, of course.

It's very big barrel. 10,000 liter.

It's made of wood the Slavonian wood.

Rick: 10,000 liters. How many bottles?

Enrico: 13,000.

For this wine, it's the artful combination of aging

in large, medium, and small oak barrels

that gets the tannin levels just right.

Rick: Enrico, when was the first barrel of wine

here in this cellar?

Enrico: From 1337.

Rick: 700 years.

Enrico: Of course. Sure.

Rick: My goodness. And for our last stop,

a chance to taste some of the wine as it's aging.

And I'm forever the attentive student.

Rick: So how old would this wine be here?

Roberto: Ah, one year. Rick: One year.

Rick: So this is "baby" Nobile di Montepulciano.

Enrico: Baby Vino Nobile, born an hour [ago].

Rick: Born an hour it's little, tiny baby!

And when it's finished, how old will the wine be?

Roberto: Three years old. Rick: Three years.

And is this good? Can you tell when you taste?

Enrico: For me, the wine is how my son is. It's very, very nice.

Rick: You love the wine like your son?

Enrico: Yeah...

Rick: You love your son like the wine!

Enrico: Same. Same!

Rick: The same! That's good!

The people of Montepulciano seem to enjoy their red meat

as much as their red wine,

and this osteria is a carnivore's dream come true.

Its long, narrow room, jammed with shared tables,

leads to a busy kitchen with an open fire.

Giulio, his wife Chiara,

and their staff serve their hungry crowd

like a well-choreographed meat-eater's ballet.

Weight and price is agreed upon at the table.

Rick: You know what? That's good.

Then it's leave it to cleaver.

The meat is seared over embers for just a few minutes...

before being cut from the bone.

Rick: I can smell it already.

Oh, look at that! Nice!

And in Tuscany, the correct way to enjoy a steak is...rare.

Enhance! Super Resolution From Google | Two Minute Papers - Duration: 4:19.

Dear Fellow Scholars, this is Two Minute Papers with Károly Zsolnai-Fehér.

What is super resolution?

Super resolution is process where our input is a coarse, low resolution image, and the

output is the same image, but now with more details and in high resolution.

We'll also refer to this process as image upscaling.

And in this piece of work, we are interested in performing single image super resolution,

which means that no additional data is presented to the algorithm that could help the process.

Despite the incredible results seen in practically any of the crime solving television shows

out there, our intuition would perhaps say that this problem, for the first sight, sounds

impossible.

How could one mathematically fill in the details when these details are completely unknown?

Well, that's only kind of true.

Let's not confuse super resolution with image inpainting, where we essentially cut an entire

part out of an image and try to replace it leaning on our knowledge of the surroundings

of the missing part.

That's a different problem.

Here, the entirety of the image is known, and the details require some enhancing.

This particular method is not based on neural networks, but is still a learning-based technique.

The cool thing here, is that we can use a training dataset, that is, for all intents

and purposes, arbitrarily large.

We can just grab a high resolution image, convert it to a lower resolution and we immediately

have our hands on a training example for the learning algorithm.

These would be the before and after images, if you will.

And here, during learning, the image is subdivided into small image patches, and buckets are

created to aggregate the information between patches that share similar features.

These features include brightness, textures, and the orientation of the edges.

The technique looks at how the small and large resolution images relate to each other when

viewed through the lens of these features.

Two remarkably interesting things arose from this experiment:

- one, it outperforms existing neural network-based techniques,

- two, it only uses 10 thousand images, and one hour of training time, which is in the

world of deep neural networks, is so little, it's completely unheard of.

Insanity.

Really, really well done.

Some tricks are involved to keep the memory consumption low, the paper discusses how it

is done, and there are also plenty of other details within, make sure to have a look,

as always, it is linked in the video description.

It can either be run directly on the low resolution image, or alternatively we can first run a

cheap and naive decade-old upscaling algorithm, and run this technique on this upscaled output

to improve it.

Note that super resolution is a remarkably competitive field of research, there are hundreds

and hundreds of papers appearing on this every year, and almost every single one of them

seems to be miles ahead of the previous ones.

Where in reality, the truth is that most of these methods have different weaknesses and

strengths, and so far I haven't seen any technique that would be viable for universal use.

To make sure that a large number of cases is covered, the authors posted a sizeable

supplementary document with comparisons.

This gives so much more credence to the results.

I am hoping to see a more widespread adoption of this in future papers in this area.

For now, when viewing websites, I feel that we are close to the point where we could choose

to transmit only the lower resolution images through the network and perform super resolution

on them locally on our phones and computers.

This will lead to significant savings on network bandwidth.

We are living amazing times indeed.

Fudgy Vegan Brownies! - Mind Over Munch - Duration: 3:19.

Hey munchies!

I am so excited because we just finished our January series, and now it's not even Thursday

yet and you get ANOTHER video!

Today I'm sharing a recipe for the FUDGIEST vegan brownies ever, and it's all thanks

to Sunsweet, who I've teamed up with as a part of their #IEatRightBecause campaign!

I personally eat right because I try to do something every single day that my body APPRECIATES…

even if I can't make it to the gym, I can still treat my body right with the fuel I

consume.

I want to know – why do you eat right?

If you share why you eat right on social media and participate in this campaign, you have

a chance to win fifteen hundred dollars and other prizes!

I have put all of the information on how to enter in the description box below.

For this amazing brownie recipe today, I am using Sunsweet D'Noir prunes, but you could

of course use Sunsweet Amaz!n Prunes.

D'Noir prunes are packed without preservatives to give them a fresh, natural taste, they're

also a good source of fiber, and lower in sugar than other dried fruits!

I love that the only ingredients are prunes, and they offer great, convenient energy for

people of all ages.

The ingredients you will need are: cocoa powder, flour, coconut sugar, salt, coconut oil, apple

sauce, and your Sunsweet D'Noir prunes!

We are actually going to make a prune purée, which is a great fat substitute for baking,

and it's SO easy to make, you just add prunes into your food processor with some water,

and let it rip!

Let it go for a few minutes so it becomes nice, smooth and well integrated.

These Sunsweet prunes blend up SO easily too, I love it!

Then we can combine our ingredients.

First, mix together your dry ingredients, and then, your wet ingredients including your

prune purée.

Then we can mix the two together, it will seem dry at first but keep mixing because

suddenly it will turn into a beautiful FUDGY batter.

Transfer the batter to your pan lined with foil, and then bake it in your oven at three

hundred and fifty degrees Fahrenheit for about thirty-five minutes.

Once those are out of the oven, let them cool and make your frosting.

Start by creaming some coconut oil in a bowl with your hand mixer until it's nice and

creamy and even in texture.

Then you can add in your cocoa powder, powdered sugar, your prune purée, vanilla extract,

and almond milk.

Mix until it's smooth and thick, and SO delicious.

Once your brownies have cooled, you can remove them from the pan, which you can see is quite

easy when you use that foil lining, and spread on that decadent frosting.

Top it off with some chopped walnuts, and then you can slice into squares.

Oh, my, gosh… these are seriously SO fudgy, so decadent and so delicious!

Mmm.

One more bite.

They taste like a "real" brownie!

The prunes add so much moisture, you can slightly taste the prunes, but the flavors pair really

well with the cocoa.

Feeling good starts with eating right!

Thank you to Sunsweet for teaming up with me on this episode, I am SO excited about

this recipe which you can find in the description box below or on mindovermunch.com.

And if you try them out, be sure to tag me on social!

I'll see you tomorrow for a brand new episode, and remember,

it's all a matter of Mind Over Munch!

English-French False Cognates - a deeper look (in English, Subtitles in English & French) - Duration: 11:42.

Learn.

English.

With.

Jojo.

Welcome to Learn English with Jojo.

Today I'm going to be talking about false cognates between English and French and in

French they call this "faux-amis," or false friends, but I hear more often false cognates

in English so that's what I'm going to stick with.

And false cognates are words in different languages that look or sound the same but

mean different things, or they're used somewhat differently.

There're a lot of words that are the same in French and English because of England and

France's complex history with a bunch of wars, conquering each other...

But basically, about half or even a little more than half of words in English come from

French, and especially words that are a little bit more high-brow, scientific, or mathematical,

or philosophical; those words come from french.

So a lot of the times you can just assume that a word that sounds like an English word

is the same as the English word.

But that becomes a problem when you're in a conversation and you come across a false

cognate, because even though you think you understand what's going on, you really don't

and it's hard to correct yourself unless you view them head-on, which is what we're going

to do in this video.

Today I'm going to focus on only a few false cognates because i'm going to give you some

context, some etymological context for these cognates.

Just want to let you know that I am not a linguist.

I have not studied linguistics and I've just used online sources: etymology dictionaries

and dictionary.com and I don't really know exactly how trustworthy they are, how heavily

researched; it's kind of confusing.

And some of them have a lot of holes in it.

The first word is actual and the false cognate is actuel.

And this one I learned pretty early on because it's something that's said... all the time.

Actual in English means existing or real, and actuel in French means current or at the

present moment.

So the first example is I am actually in Paris.

I am actually in Paris.

And the translation, or the false translation, is Je suis actuellement à Paris.

Je suis actuellement à Paris.

The English means I am really in Paris or I am in fact in Paris, I am in truth in Paris.

But the French means I am currently in Paris, which is a little bit different if you think

about it.

So the first one would be probably a response to someone asking, "are you in London?"

"no, I'm actually in Paris, not London.

I told you five times...

Dad."

But the French is I am currently in Paris, for example, the news in France is actually

called les actualités, the current events.

Current is confusing because there's also "au courant."

There's so many false cognates!

Language is so confusing.

So notice here you can interchange the form from adjective to adverb.

Actual, actually.

Actuel, actuellement.

So the "ly" in English is the "ment" in French.

And maybe I'll do a video on "ly" in English and its origins because it's kind of interesting.

So why, why, why don't they mean the same thing?

It would be so much easier if they meant the same thing.

Actual comes actuel in the 14th century and the word actuel comes from actualis, which

is latin for active (sorry for the pronunciation; I have no idea how to pronounce latin).

And at some point, around the 13th century, that started to mean existing, so it kind

of, it kind of makes sense.

you're actively doing something, it's an action, it's not some intangible thing... yeah.

In English we kept the meaning of Existing.

We've just been using it that way for 700 years.

But around the 17th century, 18th century, in French it started to mean currently, at

the present moment.

And... yeah just one of those linguistic drift things... so I was able to find in the etymology

dictionaries in the 1700s the meaning was current and in the 1500s it still meant existing.

So somewhere in that 200 year period it changed.

Which makes sense.

200 years: that's a lot of time.

Languages change in 200 years as you know when you read something from the 1800s, it

sounds a little bit different from the current, modern era.

Okay.

So the next word is eventual.

Eventual.

And the French false cognate is eventuel.

In English, eventual means in the future, ultimately something is going to happen.

And in French it means possibly, so it's a little bit different.

let's look at an example.

The English example is: eventually I will visit you in Paris.

Eventually I will visit you in Paris.

And the French "translation," or false translation, is Eventuellement, je te rendrai visite en

France.

So notice there's another false cognate that I took out, it's visit.

In French you can't... when you say visit someone, it can mean another thing.

So the English sentence means ultimately I will visit you in France.

It's a sure thing.

It's something that is going to happen.

Eventually I will visit you.

Sometimes people say, "Eventually I'll visit you in France," like maybe some of my friends

who are watching this video, and they don't really mean it.

But they're trying to convince me that will visit me in France.

Eventuellement je te rendrai visite en France means possibly I will visit you in France.

Before I knew this false cognate, I would have said, "oh cool, they're gonna visit me.

I'm excited.

It's going to be... eventually, I might have to wait but they're gonna visit me.

But actually it means possibly; they're not sure they're going to visit me.

It's possible.

So according to the online etymology dictionary that I will post a link to in the description,

eventual comes from French in the early 1600s, and then by the time it gets to the early

1800s it has taken on the meaning that it has today.

And so in this case, the English definition has shifted from the French as opposed to

the French shifting from the English like we saw in Actual.

And the word in French comes from Latin, of course.

It is the word eventus, which just means an event.

It's interesting to me that the word event has evolved to this definition of a future

event, a possible future event if you're talking about French.

According to the French etymology dictionary, this word first appeared, eventuel first appeared

in 1718.

So there is something wrong with one or both of these dictionaries because the English

one says it came from French in the 1600s, where the French one says it comes Latin in

the 1700s.

So... how does that work?

I don't know.

I need to do more research.

If I find out the difference, I will be sure to let you know.

So the next one I picked is the word grape in English and the false cognate is une grappe

in French.

So the word, grape, of course is the little berry that you make wine with, but the word

grappe in French is a bunch.

For example, a bunch of grapes.

And then there's also raisin in English that does not mean raisin in French because the

word raisin in French means grape.

Raisin in English means raisin sec in French.

It's a dried grape.

So how did this come to be?

I don't know exactly how, but I can tell you when.

So of course the word grape comes from French, and it was in the 13th century, so the 1200s,

when this word took over for the old english word, winberige, which means a wine berry.

Which makes sense.

And the word, grappe in French comes from the Protogermanic, krappon, or in my German

accent, krappon.

Krappon.

As you may or may not know, English is... was formed as a Germanic language, so it comes

from the protogermanic.

So krappon was the hook that was used to pick grapes, or pick bunches of grapes.

And so that eventually evolved into the French, grappe, which just means the cluster.

What makes it even more confusing is that raisin in English comes from raisin in French,

but raisin in French comes from the latin word, racemus, which means a bunch or cluster

of grapes.

So confusing.

What's going on.

Linguistics and etymology can be very confusing but I find it to be very interesting.

And I'm going to stop it there because I think this video is going to end up being pretty

long.

I hope this video was as interesting for you watching it as it was for me researching it

because I think I am a big linguistics nerd.

Sorry.

Hopefully other people are.

I think that is something about learning languages that really interests me, the history, and

it's something that can make learning English from French or French from English really

easy.

But there are these traps to worry about and I think it's fun to learn where they come

from.

Okay.

It's been real, it's been fun and cool... ummmm... yeah.

Peace out, girl scout.

Peace out girl scout.

Advance: Innovation and Safety in Transit - Duration: 5:36.

It opened up my opportunities for work when I had to change careers, when I lost my vision

and lost my license to drive.

I thought, I need to find something to do that I can walk to that is close enough to

my house, or ride my bike.

When I found out about the public transit and that it does all day and door-to-door,

I started looking outside of my neighborhood for a new job, and it did open that opportunity.

So now I can do what I want to do, where I want to do that.

And I am going to say Grand Island is kind of a melting pot.

We have a lot of immigrants that come to Grand Island.

With Swift out here, you know, we have a lot of manufacturing in Grand Island.

Those folks might not have a driver's license because they are newly immigrants to the area,

so they are trying to learn, you know, how to take the driver's license test, and again,

the affordability of a vehicle right at first.

So, for us, we can get them to work and get all their needs met, so it is huge for people.

It is a valuable resource for our community.

It keeps people working.

It gives the opportunity to go outside of your home and continue to work if you are

unable to drive.

The more people we have in our community working and contributing to society, that just betters

our whole world.

My heart really goes out to the people we serve in a medical, or people with physical

disabilities that have medical issues that need attention quite frequently.

And we just really enjoy serving them and helping them in the best way we can to get

to their destination for an appointment, treatment, or an operation or whatever it may be.

I do use a wheelchair, so it makes it really convenient to get around town with the bus

system.

I think independence is the key word.

You are able to do for yourself.

You can call a bus, they take you where you need to go.

You do your shopping, you do your work, whatever you're doing, and then they get you home.

The kids.

You can not believe how many kids we take to school.

You know, parents that have to go to work early, we will go pick them up and take them

home, or take them to an afterschool program, whatever.

That's kind of what sets us apart, because, the best advertising is being in a school,

because then you will see one mother say, oh my gosh I saw you guys at the school, could

you pick up my kid?

We take kids to dentist appointments, all kinds of things.

I am on disability and I can not drive, so I go everywhere with public transportation.

It is way more affordable to people that are on disability and people with low income.

I ride the bus about every day.

I enjoy it, talking to the bus drivers and visiting.

You go somewhere on the taxi and you might be waiting an hour to get back on.

So the bus it better.

The bus is good.

We are getting more and more phone calls from people who are starting to discover what we

do here.

We are actually getting more full and getting more busy.

And last year, we won the award for having the most growth.

And it is amazing how many people do not really know this service is out there.

A lot of people think it is more of a handicap type of service, and it really is not.

There is a gentleman in Alda Nebraska who had advanced Parkinson's disease who we

would bring in here.

The other day we went out and got him and his wife, and I took them to the VA hospital,

that is where he is at now.

His wife could not do that with him and take him home without our services.

He is a veteran, and I felt pretty nice about going to get him and taking him home, because

he needs it.

There are people that get on the bus every day and sometimes they are having a bad day.

We are just there to, it is all about our attitude and our perspective, how we look

to those people.

And we depend on them for our jobs, and they depend on us.

Once in awhile, there are friendships that are developed.

And it is just great to be able to help somebody that comes in a crisis situation.

Our hearts are full of compassion for each individual.

We take them one by one, and really feel that it is

necessary to have this service, because without it, these people would not know what to do.

Our schedule is full.

We just do not have enough buses out there to haul everybody.

That is really what it boils down to.

So I don't think there will ever be a stop to our service because there's such a need

for it out there.

Meet the inventor of the electronic spreadsheet | Dan Bricklin - Duration: 12:01.

How many of you have used an electronic spreadsheet,

like Microsoft Excel?

Very good.

Now, how many of you have run a business with a spreadsheet by hand,

like my dad did for his small printing business in Philadelphia?

A lot less.

Well, that's the way it was done for hundreds of years.

In early 1978, I started working on an idea

that eventually became VisiCalc.

And the next year it shipped

running on something new called an Apple II personal computer.

You could tell that things had really changed when, six years later,

the Wall Street Journal ran an editorial

that assumed you knew what VisiCalc was and maybe even were using it.

Steve Jobs back in 1990

said that "spreadsheets propelled the industry forward."

"VisiCalc propelled the success of Apple more than any other single event."

On a more personal note,

Steve said, "If VisiCalc had been written for some other computer,

you'd be interviewing somebody else right now."

So, VisiCalc was instrumental in getting personal computers on business desks.

How did it come about?

What was it? What did I go through to make it be what it was?

Well, I first learned to program back in 1966, when I was 15 --

just a couple months after this photo was taken.

Few high schoolers had access to computers in those days.

But through luck and an awful lot of perseverance,

I was able to get computer time around the city.

After sleeping in the mud at Woodstock, I went off to MIT to go to college,

where to make money, I worked on the Multics Project.

Multics was a trailblazing interactive time-sharing system.

Have you heard of the Linux and Unix operating systems?

They came from Multics.

I worked on the Multics versions

of what are known as interpreted computer languages,

that are used by people in noncomputer fields

to do their calculations while seated at a computer terminal.

After I graduated from MIT,

I went to work for Digital Equipment Corporation.

At DEC, I worked on software

for the new area of computerized typesetting.

I helped newspapers replace their reporters' typewriters

with computer terminals.

I'd write software

and then I'd go out in the field to places like the Kansas City Star,

where I would train users and get feedback.

This was real-world experience

that is quite different than what I saw in the lab at MIT.

After that, I was project leader

of the software for DEC's first word processor, again a new field.

Like with typesetting, the important thing was crafting a user interface

that was both natural and efficient for noncomputer people to use.

After I was at DEC, I went to work for a small company

that made microprocessor-based electronic cash registers for the fast-food industry.

But I had always wanted to start a company with my friend Bob Frankston

that I met on the Multics project at MIT.

So I decided to go back to school to learn as much as I could about business.

And in the fall of 1977,

I entered the MBA program at Harvard Business School.

I was one of the few percentage of students

who had a background in computer programming.

There's a picture of me from the yearbook sitting in the front row.

(Laughter)

Now, at Harvard, we learned by the case method.

We'd do about three cases a day.

Cases consist of up to a few dozen pages describing particular business situations.

They often have exhibits, and exhibits often have words and numbers

laid out in ways that make sense for the particular situation.

They're usually all somewhat different.

Here's my homework.

Again, numbers, words, laid out in ways that made sense.

Lots of calculations -- we got really close to our calculators.

In fact, here's my calculator.

For Halloween, I went dressed up as a calculator.

(Laughter)

At the beginning of each class, the professor would call on somebody

to present the case.

What they would do is they would explain what was going on

and then dictate information that the professor would transcribe

onto the many motorized blackboards in the front of the class,

and then we'd have a discussion.

One of the really frustrating things is when you've done all your homework,

you come in the next day only to find out that you made an error

and all of the other numbers you did were wrong.

And you couldn't participate as well.

And we were marked by class participation.

So, sitting there with 87 other people in the class, I got to daydream a lot.

Most programmers in those days worked on mainframes,

building things like inventory systems, payroll systems and bill-paying systems.

But I had worked on interactive word processing

and on-demand personal computation.

Instead of thinking about paper printouts and punch cards,

I imagined a magic blackboard

that if you erased one number and wrote a new thing in,

all of the other numbers would automatically change,

like word processing with numbers.

I imagined that my calculator had mouse hardware on the bottom of it

and a head-up display, like in a fighter plane.

And I could type some numbers in, and circle it, and press the sum button.

And right in the middle of a negotiation I'd be able to get the answer.

Now I just had to take my fantasy and turn it into reality.

My father taught me about prototyping.

He showed me mock-ups

that he'd make to figure out the placement on the page

for the things for brochures that he was printing.

And he'd use it to get feedback from customers

and OKs before he sent the job off to the presses.

The act of making a simple, working version of what you're trying to build

forces you to uncover key problems.

And it lets you find solutions to those problems much less expensively.

So I decided to build a prototype.

I went to a video terminal connected to Harvard's time-sharing system

and got to work.

One of the first problems that I ran into was:

How do you represent values in formulas?

Let me show you what I mean.

I thought that you would point somewhere,

type in some words, then type in some somewhere else,

put in some numbers and some more numbers, point where you want the answer.

And then point to the first, press minus, point to the second,

and get the result.

The problem was: What should I put in the formula?

It had to be something the computer knew what to put in.

And if you looked at the formula,

you needed to know where on the screen it referred to.

The first thing I thought was the programmer way of doing it.

The first time you pointed to somewhere,

the computer would ask you to type in a unique name.

It became pretty clear pretty fast that that was going to be too tedious.

The computer had to automatically make up the name and put it inside.

So I thought, why not make it be the order in which you create them?

I tried that. Value 1, value 2.

Pretty quickly I saw that if you had more than a few values

you'd never remember on the screen where things were.

Then I said, why not instead of allowing you to put values anywhere,

I'll restrict you to a grid?

Then when you pointed to a cell,

the computer could put the row and column in as a name.

And, if I did it like a map and put ABC across the top and numbers along the side,

if you saw B7 in a formula,

you'd know exactly where it was on the screen.

And if you had to type the formula in yourself, you'd know what to do.

Restricting you to a grid helped solve my problem.

It also opened up new capabilities, like the ability to have ranges of cells.

But it wasn't too restrictive --

you could still put any value, any formula, in any cell.

And that's the way we do it to this day, almost 40 years later.

My friend Bob and I decided that we were going to build this product together.

I did more work figuring out exactly how the program was supposed to behave.

I wrote a reference card to act as documentation.

It also helped me ensure that the user interface I was defining

could be explained concisely and clearly to regular people.

Bob worked in the attic of the apartment he rented in Arlington, Massachusetts.

This is the inside of the attic.

Bob bought time on the MIT Multics System

to write computer code on a terminal like this.

And then he would download test versions to a borrowed Apple II

over a phone line using an acoustic coupler,

and then we would test.

For one of these tests I prepared for this case about the Pepsi Challenge.

Print wasn't working yet, so I had to copy everything down.

Save wasn't working, so every time it crashed,

I had to type in all of the formulas again, over and over again.

The next day in class, I raised my hand; I got called on, and I presented the case.

I did five-year projections. I did all sorts of different scenarios.

I aced the case. VisiCalc was already useful.

The professor said, "How did you do it?"

Well, I didn't want to tell him about our secret program.

(Laughter)

So I said, "I took this and added this

and multiplied by this and subtracted that."

He said, "Well, why didn't you use a ratio?"

I said, "Hah! A ratio -- that wouldn't have been as exact!"

What I didn't say was, "Divide isn't working yet."

(Laughter)

Eventually, though, we did finish enough of VisiCalc

to be able to show it to the public.

My dad printed up a sample reference card

that we could use as marketing material.

In June of 1979, our publisher announced VisiCalc to the world,

in a small booth at the giant National Computer Conference in New York City.

The New York Times had a humorous article about the conference.

"The machines perform what seem religious rites ...

Even as the believers gather,

the painters in the Coliseum sign room are adding to the pantheon,

carefully lettering 'VISICALC' in giant black on yellow.

All hail VISICALC!"

(Gasp) New York Times: "All hail VISICALC."

(Laughter)

That was the last mention of the electronic spreadsheet

in the popular business press for about two years.

Most people didn't get it yet.

But some did.

In October of 1979, we shipped VisiCalc.

It came in packaging that looked like this.

And it looked like this running on the Apple II.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Now, there's an awful lot more to this story,

but that'll have to wait for another day.

One thing, though, Harvard remembers.

Here's that classroom.

They put up a plaque to commemorate what happened there.

(Applause)

But it also serves as a reminder

that you, too, should take your unique backgrounds, skills and needs

and build prototypes to discover and work out the key problems,

and through that, change the world.

Thank you.

(Applause)
