Waching daily Feb 22 2017

I would like to talk about death. Death...I

bet you're dying to talk about this.

I am dying to talk about this.

Somebody emailed... one of the Free

Members and he was saying that his

father has been trying to die for a long

period of time and he just can't seem to

let go. So this man was asking how can

I help my father leave? Death is a really

interesting topic. It's to great extent not what

most people think it is. But in this case

it's a very interesting thing because

people are trying to get out of their

body. But to get out your body you need a level of

energy... your energy to spark you out of

the body. And what happens

life... being really simple is we give our energy

away. It's I love you and so we give energy way

you love me, you get in my space, I get in

your space. But more specifically it's an

aspect of why did she do that... and he

shouldn't have done that... and I think

this... and

you're bad and this is good. It's actually very

interesting, it's like throwing little

darts with strings on them that says you

should do this

and somebody throws a dart back at me

and says you're not a nice person and

these exchanges of energy go back and

forth all the time all through our life. But

when you get to the point of dying

you need a certain amount of energy

in your space. So a lot of times people try

to get out of the body but they are

weighed down. By all these little darts. By

these energies of other people and can't

get out. And their weighed down because they

don't have enough

of their own life force in their body to

make the decision to step out of the

body. And so one of the things that a

person can do is actually really

important is call your energy back from

that person.

Now this gets complicated because people

say, but I loved and I don't want them to

go. Well it's the I don't want them to go

that in their space that becomes the

weight that they can't out of. So there

is a set of things that you can do to

begin to step out of this. It's not complicated, like

anything else, if you don't know the

answer the question becomes very

complicated. But once you know the answer

it's rather straightforward and simple.

I'll talk about that in that next section.

Ok, so in other words this man can do the

work on his end and can make separation from

his dad even though his dad doesn't know anything

about tools or how to make separation and

that will still work to help his dad to let go.

Oh absolutely, it's beginning to understand

what it's all about.

Once you understand how death works in this

context giving somebody room and even

helping them as their body is something that

becomes very accessible to a person in

that space of assisting.

Good, that's helpful. So if I have someone

in my life is dying and they're

struggling and they can't seem to leave

the body what can I do one my side to

assist them. Well you can get out of their space.

Now that's a funny comment to make

because most people don't recognize

'space' or being in somebody else's space

in this content. And it's my mother, father, wife,

husband so you're telling me to get out

of their space. Yes, actually

so what happens is I love you so much,

well most people don't understand from

an energy standpoint that a lot of times

you're you're feeling is different than

your energy in a way and so we try to

project that feeling over into another

person. Oh love you... but we put our

energy over there,

the reality is I love you is over here

not over there but once we start giving

and then we get angry after awhile, you

did this

so all of those variations of energy we

throw at people, we put in people, we give

to people, but its our energy in their

space. And so when somebody's right at

that point dying they're trying to get

out of the body but all of everyone

else's energy in their space is a weight, so

as an individual understanding that you

loving them, in fact in this case

isn't helping them. So it's not about

stop loving them

it's simply about call your energy back

and in Mastering Alchemy there is a tool, you just

create a rose and allow...

I mean very simply give the direction

to the rose to start collecting you up,

call you back.

It doesn't mean I don't love you, I don't

care about you.

It simply means I'm getting out of your space

so you can begin to step out of the body.

So Jim, how does forgiveness fit in with a

person process of dying?

Forgiveness is a very interesting

word... in kind of in our walking around

three dimensional space where most people walk

this concept of forgiving relates to

guilt and blame to a great extent

also so people people feel guilty or

people blame somebody and they hold on to

this concept of their wrong or I'm wrong

and then the next question is if I could

forgive myself I would be freed up of this.

So what happens though it's hard to

consider forgiving yourself is something

that many people have a challenge with and so

when it comes to dying... again you need a

certain amount of energy of your own in

your body to create the spark that

allows you to leave.

And so when you hold on to words like

guilt and blame and can't forgive

yourself

you've got this turmoil of energy going

on in the body that begins to be

inconclusive and so when you watch

somebody just lying there for a long

time they are trying to get out of the

body but they're really in their

consciousness and very much in there

unconscious wrapped up in... I didn't do it right or

if they only... my life life would have been

better if she would have married that one

instead.

And so you've got all this motion going

on of which most of it has absolutely

nothing to do with your reality other

than your more or less carrying these rocks

in your backpack. And so this question of

forgiveness begins to come up very much

right at the last minutes of death and

how that basically happens is your now

starting to leave the body, the souls

calling you out of the body, and as you begin to

do that many of the non-essential,

unimportant little moments in life start

to evaporate, disappear you start to

become more focused on you, how you have

your life, what's going on in a way. But

even more you begin to step into these

layers of the higher realms where you go

home. And in those layers forgiveness,

blame and guilt and judgment they mean nothing,

they don't even play out in that space. So the

person starts to leave the body

well before they look like they're

actually at the moment of death and they

begin to get out and they begin to see

let's call it heaven and they begin to

start to have their beauty of heaven, it's a

smile and wonderfulness of heaven and

it's so exciting... that energy... that paying

attention to my ills, and my I didn't

forgive, and I was a bad person,

this all fall away and that person

starts to leave the body more and more.

But many times it's like I can't go until

I am complete, or I can forgive them,

or they come and say they forgive me.

That's where you watch somebody just

lying there lingering, lingering and

lingering and so again that tool of

creating a rose in your mental image

making and starting to call your energy

back from that person space. You don't

know what it is necessarily sitting in

their space but if you are one of those

burdens in their space and if you were

sitting there saying I should forgive

them and I want him to forgive me.

What happens is you're an anchor

to not allowing them to get out.

It's really calling your energy back. Give

back to them what is theirs, take back

what is yours...

forgive them for their trespasses as its

said and forgive me for mine and you

create this separation to where they can

begin to choose how they wish to move on.

Very good. So I understand the importance

of making separation from someone as

their dying. I can do that but what

about my other my sisters and his wife

and friends and everybody else that has

these hooks in him? That's a challenge

and it's kind of called life. Your

obligation is about you. Period. You can't

fix,

heal, change, direct another person if

they don't want to be in that changed

space. Same thing with the person dying you

can't fix them. What you can do is remove

your energy from their space, continue

loving them, you know of that's your issue but you're

not unloving them, you're not taking away

from them,

you're not withdrawing from them, you're

not abandoning them in that case you are

simply calling back what is yours but in

regard to other people

there's you can communicate that to

other people that you're in their space

and that's causing them a challenge...

mostly people don't understand that. But

especially for people who are beginning

on this journey and starting to

understand what we're talking about here,

starting to recognize that you can

change your own life in lots of

different ways. As you begin to become

more conscious of being conscious in

your own evolution the ability to then

communicate that to the person who's

dying allows them to begin to make an

understanding in their space. See, if a

person is dying... you're dying and you

understand that giving back to others

their energy and taking back yours is the

doorway to stepping out of the body comfortably.

Then you can choose to give back to them

what is theirs. But trying to teach somebody

else that or do it for them... doesn't work

that way, you can't do this for them, you

can't help them die by staying in their

space or wishing everybody else would

get out of their space. It's

really where you can educate the person

dying or where for yourself you can

understand how this is working. There is

other opportunities here were you... as you

begin to understand these higher

dimensions and your relationship with

the higher dimensions the

ability to call in the angels of death at

that point which people hear is a bad

thing, it's actually quite spectacular.

They're there to help that person let go

of their burdens, their guilt's, their

blames, their judgments, their bad deeds,

if you would... and really forgive

themselves to the place call back their

energy to assist them stepping out of

the body. They're very, very important to

dying and yet most people can't have

enough awareness to simply connect with

those angels of death and have that

experience of these higher realms and the

beauty that's there and simply step out

the body. So it's a very involved thing

on one hand, death is very simple on the other.

Nice, nice.

Why Do Word Meanings Evolve? Evolution & Semantic Change - Duration: 13:10.

Welcome to the Endless Knot.

Today, along with a number of other YouTubers, we're looking at evolution, and specifically

here how word meanings evolve, oh, and along the way, rolling out a little history of books!

Why do words evolve?

It's well known that language changes over time.

But why and how do the meanings of words change?

Is there any pattern or system? Basically, meanings adapt to suit the needs of the users

of a language, with some disappearing when they are not useful and others spreading quickly

because they fit into new environments. The question of why is particularly complicated,

but generally there can be said to be a variety of psychological and sociocultural reasons

for this kind of change, such as the need for taboo replacement and euphemism like how

"to pass away" gained the figurative sense of "to die" instead of referring to any

literal movement.

As well, real world changes can trigger semantic change.

So for instance technological change, which can render an old word obsolete, or can require

the existence of a new word for a new technology, while sometimes old words are repurposed for

new concepts.

Think for instance of the word "dial" which comes ultimately from Latin dies meaning

"day", and therefore originally referred to a sundial or other similar clock faces.

When other physically similar devices came along, like compasses, they too could be referred

to as dials, and later still when rotary knobs and controls such as on a rotary telephone

came along, they too became dials.

Now when we push buttons or touch numbers on a smartphone, we still call it dialling,

even though there's nothing rotary about it, and certainly nothing to do with the length

of a day.

Similarly, in the days of movable type printing, the word font referred to a complete set of

letters in the same typeface, so called because they were all cast together out of metal — think

foundry.

Now with computer word processing, font refers to the typeface itself.

Sometimes changes can seem random, but there are some systematic patterns we can see in

how words change their meaning.

The first axis of change we can see is narrowing vs widening.

Examples of narrowing, also called specialization, include: meat, which in Old English was a

general word for 'food' before its sense narrowed to specifically the flesh of animals;

deer, which originally meant any wild animal before becoming restricted to the specific

species we mean today; starve, which in Old English meant 'to die' but now means more

narrowly 'to die by lack of food'; and girl, which could originally refer to a child

of any gender.

The opposite process, widening or generalization, broadens or extends the sense of a word, as

in bird which as Old English bridd meant specifically "young bird", with the word fugol (fowl

in Modern English) being the more general word for 'bird', and whereas bird widened

in its meaning to refer to any bird, fowl narrowed its meaning to refer specifically

to barnyard birds such as chickens, ducks, and geese.

A similar example is holiday, which originally mean a holy day, before its meaning extended

to any time off.

And a special case of widening is genericization in which a trademark name becomes a general

term for the category, such as kleenex (in some dialects), or as I covered in a previous

video, linoleum.

The next axis of change is pejoration and amelioration, whether a word becomes more

negative or more positive in sense.

So for instance cunning originally meant 'learned' coming from the Old English verb cunnan meaning

'to know'.

The negative sense of 'skillfully deceitful' doesn't crop up until much later.

An interesting case are the words silly and nice.

Silly originally meant 'blessed' or 'happy', coming from an old Germanic root meaning 'luck,

happiness', but the sense went through a series of changes from 'blessed' to 'pious'

to 'innocent, harmless' to 'pitiable' to 'feeble' to 'feeble in mind' or

as we think of it today 'foolish'.

Nice on the other hand, coming ultimately from Latin nescire 'to not know or be ignorant',

went therefore from meaning 'ignorant' through such senses as 'foolish', 'shy',

'fastidious', 'dainty or delicate', 'refined', and ultimately 'pleasant,

agreeable, or kind', thus going from a distinctly negative sense to a distinctly positive one.

So be careful who you call nice or silly!

Similar to this type of semantic shift is the degeneration and elevation axis.

The Old English words cnafa and cniht both meant 'boy', but the former was demoted

to become knave and the latter was elevated to become knight.

Weakening and strengthening of semantic meaning is another axis found, though weakening is

by far the more common.

Something that's awesome, fantastic, and fabulous, isn't usually characterized by

literal awe, fantasy, or fable, and something that's terrible or horrible doesn't usually

invoke actual terror and horror.

You can sort of think of them as hyperbole or exaggeration that becomes banal.

One example of the opposite might be kill, which seems to have originally meant simply

'to strike, hit' but later was strengthened to mean 'put to death'.

Two other semantic shifts worth mentioning are figurative ones, metaphor and metonymy.

In metaphor something, usually concrete, gains a more abstract figurative meaning.

Thus the older sense of field is an open grassy area, but the word gained a metaphorical meaning

when used in the sense of say the "field of linguistics".

And the base sense of grasp is to physically hold something with your hand, but you can

now also "grasp" the concept of semantic shift.

And while broadcast originally meant 'to scatter seeds' now we can say that this

lesson on semantic shift is being broadcast on YouTube.

Metonymy on the other hand is a semantic shift that happens when two things are closely associated

with each other.

So for instance bead originally meant prayer, coming from a root that also gives us the

word bid.

But because of the practise of the rosary or prayer beads, the sense transferred over

from the prayers themselves to the little decorative balls on a string or chain that

were used to count the prayers.

An interesting case of metonymy can be seen with the words cheek and jaw.

Cheek in Old English meant 'jaw, jawbone' and is probably related to the verb chew,

but by metonymy shifted its meaning to the closely associated fleshy part above the jaw.

The word jaw, on the other hand, probably comes from the French word joue meaning 'cheek'.

So originally jaw meant cheek and cheek meant jaw!

So that's how the meaning of words evolve, and funnily enough the word evolution itself

is a good example of this.

You see Charles Darwin didn't coin the word — it's been around since classical Latin

and has had many different meanings in English over the years.

Darwin wasn't even the first to use it to refer to the process of biological change

through natural selection which he famously expounded on in his Origin of Species.

As it turns out, Darwin preferred the term "descent with modification" and used the

word evolution only once in his writings.

It was Darwin's pal, geologist Charles Lyell, who was the first to apply the word evolution

to this concept, and as I said, the word had already been around for a while, making this

an example of re-purposing an older word for a new idea.

In fact this wasn't even the first biological use of the word, it had previously been used

to refer to the idea of the development to maturity of an individual organism over its

life cycle, and before that to all manner of developing processes, including, in the

17th century, the semantic development of a word!

This arose from a metaphorical extension of the Latin word evolutio, which meant 'unrolling',

initially with the literal sense of the unrolling of a scroll, but more commonly with the metaphorical

sense of reading through a book, which at the time would have been written as a scroll.

Aside from clay tablets, scrolls were one of the first types of book technology for

extended writing (not just brief inscriptions).

Not that they would have called them scrolls at that time.

For instance, the Latin for scroll is volumen which comes from the Latin verb volvere meaning

"to turn around, roll", which makes sense when you think about a scroll.

Through the process of broadening the term volume now refers to any type of book, not

just scrolls.

The word scroll is not so straight forward.

Though it sounds like roll, it's actually not etymologically related, though its modern

form with the l-sound on the end probably does come from roll.

Scroll comes from French escroe, from which we also get the legal term escrow because

it was a legal document originally written on a scroll.

The French word, which comes from a root that means "to cut" and also gives us shred

and shear, originally meant a "cut piece or strip" and then through that process

of narrowing I mentioned, a strip of parchment, and finally a rolled up strip of parchment.

The next big advance in book technology is what was called in Latin the codex, what we

would think of as a book with pages bound together.

The word codex (plural codices) comes from caudex, meaning "tree trunk", by the process

of metonymy, because the codex technology evolved from wooden writing tablets which

had a wax covering that you'd scratch the writing into — several such tablets could

be hinged together, thus leading to the form of the codex or book.

The Germanic derived word book has a similar tree origin as it's related to the word

beech as in beech tree, so Germanic books were also originally wooden tablets.

The ancient Greek word for book, by the way, was biblion, from which we get the words bibliography

and the Bible, literally "the books".

Of course the word biblion originally referred to scrolls, not the codex, as that came about

later in Roman times.

Biblion is a toponym, that is a word that comes from a place name, in this case the

ancient Phoenician city of Byblos, which exported papyrus.

Which raises the point that ancient scrolls and early codices weren't made from paper.

Papyrus is made from layering strips of the pith from the stem of the papyrus plant, a

kind of sedge or reed.

Our modern word paper comes from papyrus, even though it's made from pulp from plants

like linen and hemp and later wood pulp.

Paper technology was invented in China and was only imported into medieval Europe in

the 11th century.

But there was another writing material commonly used in medieval Europe, the skin of animals

such as sheep or calves, known as parchment or vellum.

The word parchment is also a toponym, from the ancient city of Pergamon, where the technology

was developed as an alternative to papyrus.

The word vellum, on the other hand is related to veal, the meat of a calf or young cow,

from a Proto-Indo-European root meaning year, thus the idea of a year-old calf.

Getting back to the Romans, they had another word for book, in the general sense of a volume

or scroll, Latin liber, from which we get the word library.

Latin liber could also mean bark and comes from a Proto-Indo-European root which means

"to peel or break off", which also gives us through the Germanic branch the word leaf.

Speaking of leaves, we still sometimes use the word leaves to refer to pages in a book,

and there's another leafy word, folio, which has a place in this story of the history of

book technology.

A folio, from Latin folium meaning literally 'leaf' but often meaning 'page', is

what you get if you take the skin of one sheep and trim off all the curvy bits to make a

codex.

If you fold it in half and bind it together with others you get what's called a folio

sized book, very large, a size that today we might associate with a large atlas.

If you fold that sheep skin in half twice, you get a smaller book with four pages per

sheep skin, which is called a quarto—what what we would now think of as a large dictionary

sized book.

Fold again and you'd produce an octavo which is the size of a modern hardcover book.

Fold again and you get an even smaller book, the size of a modern paperback.

One more fold and you get something the size of a small notepad, or a smartphone.

And these comparisons are no coincidence.

When books started to be made out of paper rather than parchment, they tended to keep

the same sizes as had been created by the properties of the sheepskin, cause that's

what everyone was used to.

And even today, e-books are designed to be about the same size as the books we're used

to.

So essentially your Kindle is the size of a sheep!

Only now it's come full circle, with e-readers that we can "scroll" through—another

old word repurposed for new technology, in the ever-evolving history of the book, and

language itself, adapting to new circumstances.

So, that's how word meanings evolve—but what about other things such as facial expressions,

or homosexuality, or the selfie?

I acknowledge them.

They're the best musical actors.

This is a battle.

We'll do our best.

(Nervous as they meet again after the first round)

("One Candle" by god)

(This song is for those)

(Who were eliminated)

(The cheer song begins)

(Leo attacks first)

(Flaunts his sense of rhythm)

That was great!

That was exciting.

It was fun.

(They show support for each other)

(But only one can return!)

Since it's a battle,

I decided that I'd sing my heart out.

I was eliminated in the first round.

I thought that I would have to sing well

if I want to win.

(Current score is tight at 5:4)

(Who will be the second singer to return?)

(Winner Leo, loser Kim Suyong)

(His dream vanishes, he falls again)

(Shocked)

Good, good.

You won. Good job!

We won!

(Despair)

Leo has won by 7:6.

It was really close.

Are you okay?

I'm okay.

It's fun falling the second time.

- You were good. / - You did well.

- You did well. / - You were good.

You were good.

I fell twice on the same episode.

Have many people done that?

I'm experiencing a lot of fun things.

Coach Muzie, what did you think?

He won by just one point.

He's a little...

He's a little younger.

He was cute, he did his best.

I think that's why he gained an extra point.

I see.

- Excuse me. / - Suyong... Yes?

Kim Seongyeong was really touched.

I was really touched by Coach Lee Sangmin.

Coach Lee Sangmin? Why?

When you coach...

We can only see your rear view.

Your dance...

It was really unique.

- What do you mean? / - Right.

I kept providing my energy.

- An energy dance. / - I loved this move.

He even closed his eyes.

It's a dance with no identity.

You looked like...

A leader of a cult.

(We're going to win!)

(Give me the points)

(Magically high spirited)

Okay.

Leo, you've won.

Please return to your locker room.

I feel a little regretful because

I feel like I just copied the rap.

But I'm a musical actor.

I'm not a rapper.

The consolation round is over.

Two singers have returned to their teams.

Coach Lee Sangmin's team

now has one singer remaining.

Coach Muzie and Coach Kim Sooro have 2 singers.

In Coach Park Suhong's team,

everyone remains.

(Permanently eliminated)

(Coming up)

I don't embarrass myself like that.

I'll show you who the original is.

(They fight to gain everyone's attention)

(The battle of the century)

This is worth watching.

(You really)

(Don't miss this amazing performance)

(Seongyeong sang "You're So Far Away")

(Her opponent was Lisa)

(The veteran led by a mile)

You've won by 11:2.

(Dilemma)

Coach Park Suhong, are you still undecided?

We...

From the beginning...

- We had a set path. / - Right.

(Nervous)

The team we've chosen!

From Coach Lee Sangmin's team...

Kim Publae!

Kim Publae.

(Low echoing tone, agile movements)

(Awards list)

To my knowledge...

- You've often starred as a married couple. / - Yes.

We starred in "Dracula."

- He played Dracula. / - I see.

I played his wife.

How about this stage then?

Can we look forward to great teamwork?

He's her favorite junior.

Kim Publae and Kim Seongyeong

will sing...

I prefer singing with her.

There's no one else for me to sing with.

What do you want to sing if she chooses you?

Then it's over.

You won't be able to hear this anywhere else.

With Kim Seongyeong...

The song they're going to sing...

"If I Leave."

"If I Leave."

"If I Leave?"

I see.

(The two singers appear calm)

("If I Leave" by Jo Sumi, 2001)

(From the drama, "The Last Empress")

(Sorrowful melody, poetic lyrics)

(Hit song sung by Jo Sumi)

When we sing this song...

You'll think of the musical, "The Last Empress."

The thought will pop up.

Kim Publae vs. Kim Seongyeong.

The battle begins now.

(Show them what you can do)

His low tone is so attractive.

If the judges are impressed by that...

I think he can win.

However, this song...

I think Seongyeong has the advantage.

(They embrace warmly before the battle)

(Let's do that too)

(Hesitant)

It's good to see you, Sangmin.

I think of the other musical actors as family.

I love Seongyeong.

I hope we can sing this song sincerely.

(A rich, echoing tone vs. Veteran's emotions)

("If I Leave" by Jo Sumi)

(Already turned into a tragic woman)

(Kim Publae attacks first)

I feel attracted already.

(His low voice echoes out)

(Wow)

(Kim Seongyeong attacks)

(Her sorrowful voice rings out)

(On the verge of tears)

(Her emotions call for attention)

(Nice!)

(Attacks with his echoing voice)

(I am sad)

(I must keep living)

(Thrilled)

(Expresses the song like a page of history)

(The charisma of a veteran of 27 years)

(Voice rings out confidently)

(Tears)

(Astonished)

It's really hard to tell.

It's so close.

I'm the empress of Joseon.

I...

I'm the empress of Joseon.

I will die for the people.

- For the people... / - This is creepy.

I will return from the dead.

(Leads the song by improvised lines)

(Seongyeong gains the first point)

3, 4.

(Sadness is expressed in her shaky outcry)

(Goodness)

(Kim Publae 1:2 Kim Seongyeong)

(Kim Publae 1:3 Kim Seongyeong)

(Defends calmly with his weighty voice)

(Attracted to Publae)

(Adjusts her voice like a true veteran)

(Ends with a vibrato attack)

(Everyone is drawn to the stage)

(Kim Publae 1:5 Kim Seongyeong)

(Kim Publae 2:5 Kim Seongyeong)

(The song reaches the climax)

(Their voices evoke sadness in the listener)

(The last empress' life is retold in 3 minutes)

("If I Leave" by Jo Sumi)

(The emotions linger)

(The singers have tears in their eyes)

(Which singer has moved the judges?)

(Tense)

We share our daily concerns.

We converse a lot.

He listens to me.

He's like a little brother to me.

That's why I wanted to sing with Publae.

(Loser Kim Publae, winner Kim Seongyeong)

(Publae disappears into the black hole)

Kim Seongyeong has won by 8:5.

Congratulations.

Good work.

Are you okay?

I'm okay.

Our team's lost.

A mixed duet version of "If I Leave."

That was very different.

You've won, Seongyeong...

You've won two consecutive rounds.

You're amazing.

I mean it.

(Kim Publae eliminated)

(4th place finalized)

As a coach,

this is the first time I've seen

a team destroyed in the 7th round.

I see.

(Empty)

(They all left the stage after "If I Leave")

Coach Lee Sangmin

is sitting over there.

(Sorrow, joy)

Coach Lee Sangmin...

Pull up the pants.

Hey! What is that? What are you doing?

What?

What's that?

(Sudden B-boy dance)

What was that performance for?

(I'll show you too!)

What was that?

I dance when I feel angry.

(Explodes into laughter)

You're really angry then?

This is what I regret the most.

My team wanted to sing certain songs

but they didn't get to sing any of them.

I heard there's a song your entire team wanted.

The title...

It's called "The Age Of The Cathedrals."

The three of them...

- Together sing... / - Nice.

How about if they sing it together?

I think that'd be nice.

Please come up to the stage.

Please give them a round of applause.

We have to watch this.

I really wanted to see this.

"The Age Of The Cathedrals?"

What does that mean?

"The Age Of The Cathedrals?"

It is about the era in the musical

called "Notre Dame de Paris."

The poet, Gringoire at the time...

It's a song which summarizes the story of

when Quasimodo falls in love with Esmeralda.

- Okay then. / - This musical...

Hyeongyeol and I starred in its premiere...

- As Quasimodo. / - It was double casting.

I played Gringoire.

I played the role who sings this song.

I see.

("The Age Of The Cathedrals")

(From "Notre Dame de Paris")

(Publae's low voice delivers the tale)

I love his voice.

(Suyong, the troubadour joins in)

(In awe)

(Expressive)

(Lonely Quasimodo's low whisper)

(Falling into it)

(Relive the emotions of "Notre Dame de Paris")

He's good.

(The best!)

They should do a musical actors' special

on "Yu Huiyeol's Sketchbook."

You're great!

(From nowhere came)

(The age of the cathedrals)

(Their harmony will write new history on the show)

(Hope rises from this beautiful, grand melody)

(The emotions heighten)

(Like an epic tale)

(This triple harmony reaches the climax)

(Their song creates awe)

("The Age Of The Cathedrals")

(From "Notre Dame de Paris")

(Bravo to the 3 singers' perfect ensemble)

That was a wonderful performance.

- Give them a round of applause. / - Thank you.

- Thank you. / - Thank you.

You're the ace.

For sure.

- You're the dark horse. / - The dark horse.

Dark horse.

Right now...

She's the only female singer left.

What do you think?

I've gotten my wish already.

There's nothing more.

Nothing more for me to ask for.

I'm totally happy.

- I want to have fun. / - Let's go.

- Let's go. / - Wait.

What's that? What is it?

- What are you eating? / - It's honey.

- Honey. / - Honey?

Yes, chestnut honey.

- Chestnut honey? / - It's good for your throat.

Slowly.

Squeeze it and swallow slowly.

Wait until it melts.

(Yum)

Wow. This is the real thing.

- Chestnut honey. / - It's been collected by bees.

It doesn't have sugar in it.

We don't need to discuss it.

I'm sure they'll choose us.

- They'll choose Jas. / - 100%.

- They'll choose us. / - It will be me.

There can be a variable here.

They'll choose us.

- Then... / - What will you sing?

I'm wearing really heavy make-up today.

So...

- Something sexy. / - Sing something sexy. Okay.

- If I sing something young and sexy... / - Okay.

"Beautiful Land?"

(Hahaha)

Okay, it's Coach Park Suhong's turn.

Which singer from which team will you choose?

He provokes me on every episode.

- It's time! / - He brought a cheap whistle today.

He kept blowing that at me.

He bugs me.

He kept jabbing me.

I choose Coach Kim Sooro.

- Okay. / - I'm going to attack him.

Okay then. From Coach Kim Sooro's team...

Which singer will you choose?

From Coach Kim Sooro's team...

It won't be me. No way.

Our choice...

Our opponent!

Jas Jeong.

I don't believe this.

He called me Jas Jeong.

- I'm so upset. / - Go tell him.

Go out there and tell him.

It's Jas Chang.

Jas Jeong.

Okay then.

He's selected Jas Chang.

Wait.

- I've offended her. / - Wait.

- Sorry. / - You're a piece of trash.

- What do you mean? / - You're trash.

- Go and recycle him! / - I have a name.

- Korea's best musical star! / - I have a name!

You called her Jas Jeong?

Just swear at me instead.

- Okay, I'll curse you. / - Call me Gyeong Sooro.

I'll curse you.

- Geez. / - Gosh.

I was so surprised.

I got a huge shock too.

- Why call her Jas Jeong? / - Sorry.

- Sorry. / - I got a huge shock.

Sorry.

(Singer who has turned musical actress)

(Became a leading actress 3 years after her debut)

(Passionate diva, Jas Chang)

Jas Chang.

They summoned you as Jas Jeong.

I'm curious as to which song you'll choose.

All three of them

are looking at me so intensely.

They're my seniors.

She feels pressured.

Actually, on Singing Battle...

- There's always a performance or two. / - Right.

- We haven't had much of that until now. / - Yes.

So this time...

I think it'd be nice if the judges

score based on performance this time.

We can lighten things up.

- I see. / - I think that would be nice.

Please announce the song for us.

My song...

"Betrayal of the Rose."

"Betrayal of the Rose."

"Betrayal of the Rose" by Uhm Junghwa.

Seongyeong, do you like the song choice?

You want performance, right?

I'm the queen of dance in the musical industry.

I think that Jas' dance

will be technical and sexy.

I'll just dance however I like.

- I see. / - Totally unexpected.

- Sexy vs. spontaneous dance. / - Unseen.

Kim Seongyeong vs. Jas Chang.

The battle begins now!

- Wish me luck. / - Just relax.

(Shouts)

Good luck, Seongyeong.

(Shouts)

It's her turn at last.

Show us how you become one with the song.

Everyone's going to laugh.

That's good. We love that.

Everyone...

- They'll laugh. / - That's good.

We love that.

Make use of the stage.

You can come down and go back up.

There are no rules here.

Use the space.

It needs to be about performance.

- Okay. / - Good.

You need to sing well too.

Just think of this as a warm-up.

You can do better in the next round.

- Okay? / - I can do it!

You can do it.

Gosh, Seongyeong.

- I feel so nervous. / - It's okay.

Good luck.

You too.

Feel free to be nervous.

(What's with him?)

("Betrayal of the Rose" by Uhm Junghwa)

(Jas warms up into the dance)

Let's do this!

Slowly, slowly. Control yourself.

Nice!

(Her eyes look like she'll eat up the camera)

(Fallen)

(Seongyeong's turn to attack)

(Testing each other out)

(Defends with her seductive voice)

(Stage has already heated up)

(Begins dancing without notice)

(Same song)

(Different feel)

(Misses a beat while laughing)

(Raise your hands and feet)

(Hahaha)

(Jas tries to maintain her pace)

(Power stretches with aerobics)

She's not interested in singing.

She doesn't care.

(Dance grows more intense as she walks)

(Flustered)

(Move your arms and legs as you walk)

(Jas maintains her composure)

(Returns to singing)

(I'm not going to lose)

(As though she's been wounded)

(Bounce like HyunA if you feel confident)

(The judges begin scoring)

Scream!

(Jas Chang 0:1 Kim Seongyeong)

(Jas Chang 0:2 Kim Seongyeong)

(Gathers herself together for the second half)

(Seductive)

(Tied at 2:2)

(Why did you choose this song?)

(Takes the lead with the Uhm Junghwa dance)

(I'm in control now!)

(Gains another point)

(All eyes on me)

She's got everyone's attention.

I keep looking at her.

(Makes up new moves as she sings)

(Waves)

(Sudden laughter)

(Breaks out into an exorcism dance)

(Sings as though she's acting)

(Her heart's all torn)

(You're going to regret it)

(Gains a point with her dance)

(She's amazing)

(I'm going to keep walking)

Scream one more time!

("Betrayal of the Rose" by Uhm Junghwa)

Thank you.

That was great.

You were amazing.

Amazing.

You're the legend of the legend of the legend.

That was unbelievable.

(Hahaha)

I think it's really close.

I'm scared.

She didn't care about the song.

That was really shocking.

I wouldn't pay money to watch that.

(Laughter)

(A show that money can't buy)

Here we go.

(Time for the winner to be decided)

(Please)

(They're desperate too)

I have my own unique energy.

With that energy,

I'm going to create a great performance together.

I'm going to be really desperate.

I'll give it my all.

(A point difference at 4:3, the result is?)

(Anxious)

(Who's the surprising winner of this performance?)

(Winner Jas Chang, loser Kim Seongyeong)

(Disappears into the black hole after her dance)

Okay!

I felt so nervous.

- It's so scary. / - You were great.

This is amazing.

Wow. Her charisma...

- You did well. / - Good work, Seongyeong.

You were really good.

There's nothing more to show.

I...

I have no regrets.

I think I've done my duty.

My limbs are aching.

It's really fun falling from the stage.

I thought it'd be scary but

it'd not bad.

Jas Chang has won by 9:4.

Today's musical actors' special...

This is worth watching.

To be honest...

Before I came on the show,

I didn't think that I'd open like this.

- I didn't expect to sing that first. / - Really?

But right now...

I danced so hard that I couldn't sing.

- I really did. / - I see.

Wait.

It's nice that you're interviewing the winner but

she became one with the song.

She expressed the lyrics with her body.

Please give Seongyeong a clap.

Of course, Seongyeong.

Please give her a round of applause.

I thought we were at a club.

I really...

I feel so light, as though I'm going to fly.

There are a lot of talented juniors to follow.

I've gotten my wish.

Thank you.

I think this is a great program.

(Happy)

(Kim Seongyeong eliminated)

Kim Sooro always blocks my path.

He always blocks me.

I don't want to look at him.

(Kim Sooro's card casted aside)

(Who's talking about me?)

(They look like they're on an outing)

In terms of singing talent,

it'd be good to sing against Kim Gyeongseon.

(He even takes out his razor)

My beard has grown.

I can't perform like this.

Coach Kim Sooro.

You're taking such a long time.

I thought of them from the very beginning.

- I see. / - From the moment I left home.

- From home? / - Yes.

- When you left the house? / - Right.

I took one step out of the house...

Park Suhong.

I'd lift this foot, Park Suhong.

Why is it always me, Sooro?

Goodness.

I don't care about winning.

I'm going to chew you to bits.

- Don't worry. / - Really?

From Coach Park Suhong's team,

which singer will you choose?

- Kim Gyeongseon. / - I knew it.

- You've chosen Kim Gyeongseon. / - Come out.

Gyeongseon.

Nice.

(Why did she choose Kim Gyeongseon?)

I think we have similar voice colors.

Her voice is jazzy and big.

I think her voice tone suits me.

Gyeongseon...

Among musical actors...

She's famous for having a great voice.

She has great energy.

She sings high.

She's elaborate.

(Powerful presence despite her small size)

(Awards list)

(Power diva, Kim Gyeongseon)

She's been warming up the whole time.

- Show us how you warm up. / - How?

- Miya! I'm sorry. / - Get lost!

Miya, fight!

Do you normally warm up like that?

Yes, she does.

That's right.

- Really? / - Yes.

How do you warm up, Jas?

It's similar to Gyeongseon.

- Hiya, hiya? / - Yes.

It's miya against hiya.

Okay then.

Kim Gyeongseon.

Which song are you going to choose?

She's a tough opponent.

Jas...

If we're going to fight...

- Let's fight head on. / - Fight head on.

- "I Love You." / - "I Love You."

(" I Love You" by Shin Hyobum, 1992)

(Main single from Shin Hyobum's 4th album)

(Emotional expression will determine who wins)

I'm looking forward to seeing who wins.

The battle begins now.

Why are you doing this to me?

Let's plan.

Be emotional, sing out.

Be emotional.

It has to be totally different to earlier.

Belt out the high notes.

- Express the emotions. / - Okay.

That's important.

In the musical industry,

I'm known for my emotional voice.

So...

I have a warm voice so

I think I will be able to

melt the hearts of the judges.

You need to compete based on energy.

The first note you sing is important.

It's an energy fight.

Okay.

I'm really...

I'm short and little.

However, my small body produces

a lot of energy.

I'll use that to win.

("I Love You" by Shin Hyobum)

(The emotional battle of the divas begins)

(Jas Chang attacks first)

(Elegant hand gestures)

Nice.

(Nervous)

(Transforms into an emotional ballad singer)

(Kim Seongyeong's turn to attack)

(Intimidates with her powerful voice)

(Large, elaborate gestures)

(Like she's performing in a musical)

(I won't lose)

(Fights with her powerful, clean high notes)

(You're doing well)

(Impressed)

Nice, very good.

You're doing well, relax.

This is great. Smile.

(Decides to approach)

(Relaxed)

(Improvisation with high notes)

(Brotherly smile)

(Loves her emotional vibrato)

(The judges begin scoring)

(Elaborate stage manner to secure points)

(But Gyeongseon scores first)

(The real battle begins now)

(Immersed)

(Jas Chang 1:1 Kim Gyeongseon)

(Makes eye contact with everyone)

(Gyeongseon leads by one point)

(Falling for the diva's singing)

(Jas Chang 2:2 Kim Gyeongseon)

(Jas, you can win)

(Let's go!)

(Jas leads by one point)

(Emotional delivery vs. Powerful voice)

(Pupils shake)

(Coaches and singers embrace in love)

(When did the score turn out like this?)

(Jas begins her final spurt)

(Desperation can be felt in her expressions)

(I love)

(You)

(Ends with detailed emotional expression)

(Bravo)

("I Love You" by Shin Hyobum)

That was good.

You did really well.

(Battle of emotional divas)

(Will Kim Gyeongseon win with her powerful voice?)

(Can she win again with her voice and acting?)

(Please)

(Which diva will the judges choose?)

(Winner Jas Chang, loser Kim Gyeongseon)

(Power diva gives into her junior)

Jas Chang has won by 8:5.

You were really good.

Jas, how can you do this to me?

This is so scary.

I want to ask something

to Nam Kyungjoo.

What did you think?

It was a stable performance.

She didn't just sing.

She acted too.

Her charisma...

It was amazing.

- I see. / - Yes.

If...

If a famous film director

asked to film a movie

and if a famous music producer

asked you to release an album,

would you act or sing?

(What will Jas choose?)

(Yes, I've decided)

I will choose to sing.

- I see. / - That's wrong.

Coach Kim Sooro, please explain.

There's a set period to shoot films.

That's the only chance that you get.

Also, you can shoot the film and

add a singing scene in it.

To be honest, I performed as

an unknown singer for many years.

- I have a lot of regrets about singing. / - I see.

That's why every stage that

I get to sing on is special.

I can't let go of my dreams about singing.

That must be why it felt so sincere.

I was really touched by your performance.

- Congratulations. / - Thank you.

(Kim Gyeongseon eliminated)

Currently, Coach Muzie and Coach Kim Sooro

have two singers remaining.

Coach Park Suhong has one singer left.

- We have to do it this time. / - Yes.

Let's do it.

Let's go!

A preview of the finals.

(Pressured)

(Are they going to challenge the living legend?)

Which song should I choose?

If they choose me?

I don't think they'll choose us.

I don't think it will be us.

If they have a conscience...

He's capable of choosing me.

(Can't afford to relax)

I think it will be us this time.

- Right? / - It will be us.

I think they'll choose Leo.

Really?

(There are three males remaining)

(Who will face Jas Chang?)

Coach Kim Sooro.

- Who's your next opponent? / - Right.

- Geez. / - Our next opponent...

Suhong?

Are you going to choose Coach Park Suhong?

I've come over to comfort her.

- Go and sit down. / - Us again?

Seniors...

Okay

Stand there.

Look at me modestly.

Wait a minute.

Should we go then?

- Sooro, I'll apologize. / - Okay.

Sooro.

My next opponent...

No.

- From Coach Muzie's team! / - It's us.

- From coach Muzie's team. / - Jo Kwon!

It's time.

It's Kwon.

Sooro totally shocked me.

Let's go and ask as we discussed.

(They predicted it but still walk out heavily)

Hello.

I'm a musical actor and singer,

Jo Kwon from 2AM.

It's nice to meet you.

(Vocalist of a male group, 2AM)

("Jesus Christ Superstar," 2013)

(Debuted as the youngest Herod)

(Loved for his performance and voice)

Jo Kwon.

- Have you already selected the song? / - Yes.

Jo Kwon wants to ask something.

You must be feeling exhausted.

So I've prepared "Sonata of Temptation."

"Sonata of Temptation."

This should be fun.

"Sonata of Temptation" by Jo Kwon?

Jo Kwon can sing that.

("Sonata of Temptation" by IVY, 2007)

(This song made sexy diva IVY into a top star)

(Choreography that's highlighted with expression)

The songs on the list that

I could sing disappeared one by one.

It felt like my performance kept shrinking.

That's why I decided this.

I'm cheeky Kwon.

I have to put on a performance.

I'm going to kill her with "Sonata of Temptation."

(Jas Chang isn't an easy opponent)

(She beat Seongyeong with a dance song)

(She sang an emotional ballad perfectly)

(She beat diva Kim Gyeongseon)

(Two consecutive wins)

It's Jas Chang vs. Jo Kwon.

The battle begins now.

I don't know how Jo Kwon will sing

but she's aiming for her 3rd win.

No one has done that today.

I think it will be hard to win three times.

"Sonata of Temptation."

What do I do?

- Just belt it out. / - I'll do whatever I like.

Just think of it as your last performance.

- Okay. / - From now on...

Finals!

It's a preview of the finals.

I knew he'd choose that song.

I had a feeling he'd choose that.

I'm actually performing with IVY right now.

She taught me the song yesterday.

She said I have to show the whites of my eyes.

(Jas, like this)

I learnt moves like this.

I'm going to do my best.

I hope I can create a great performance.

I have nothing to say.

Just do what you always do.

- I can do it. / - Good luck.

Jas is a really great singer.

I know that.

That's why I changed my strategy.

I'm going to put on a performance

to try and beat Jas.

(Performers of the musical industry wish luck)

("Sonata of Temptation" by IVY)

Hey.

(Acts pretty)

(Begins calmly despite Jo Kwon's dance moves)

Nice.

(Here we go)

(Start)

(Everyone, look at me)

(The original singer taught her)

(Drops his neck backwards)

(She's unflustered and continues to attack)

(I'm the IVY on this stage)

(Jo Kwon's vocal attack)

(He's even more powerful in real life)

(So fun)

(Jas dances as taught)

(Turn whenever possible)

(Show me your feelings)

(Adjusts her vocal strength to defend)

(Copied expression)

(The battle grows more interesting)

I think Jo Kwon will win this.

(The judges begin scoring)

(Did you call me?)

(Jas, don't lose)

(Shows her whites)

(Hahaha)

(Neck and neck at 1:1)

(Jo Kwon 2:1 Jas Chang)

(Begins attacking)

(Lethal kick)

(Scared)

Don't give up!

(Detailed expressions)

(Shakes his hips)

He's so funny.

I can't believe I'm seeing this in person.

(He entertains everyone, turns away peacefully)

(Snobby)

(Jo Kwon 3:3 Jas Chang)

Why Did Two Sexes Evolve? - Duration: 9:58.

In nature, you will notice that the vast majority of sexually reproducing organisms have got two

sexes - not one, and very rarely more.

Biologists love to ponder about why sexual reproduction evolved in the first place, but

today we're asking a very different question - why do we need sexes for sex, and why specifically,

TWO of them?

[Intro by Caro Waro & Cristina de Manuel]

Firstly, to clarify, in this video the term sex is used interchangeably with gametes types

or mating type.

Gametes are reproductive cells, and one gamete may only fuse with one of a different type

to give rise to a zygote.

Given there are generally two gametes or mating types, they are usually referred to as male

and female.

Male gametes are generally smaller and motile, and female gametes are generally larger and

sessile, and carry no further political connotations than that.

If you think about it, having two sexes may seem like a very weird set up, because it

effectively cuts the population a gamete could potentially mate with in half.

You would expect more sexes to appear, such that gametes can mate with those of a different

type, and in this situation, the rarer sex will have the highest advantage and therefore,

you would expect more sexes to appear over time.

However, this is NOT what we observe.

Although there are cases of multiple sexes in certain fungi species, in almost every

other case of sexually reproducing organisms, there are only two sexes, which raises the

question - how did two sexes evolve in the first place?

This is a fascinating question for which there are multiple potential theories.

One of the more simplistic models is based on size.

In the ancestral state, the gametes don't have separate mating types, and they are isogamous,

which means they are all the same size, and they can all fuse with each other.

The larger a gamete, the more resources it can provide to the future embryo, and this

is something that we see that in seeds.

Large seeds can generally last a long time without germinating and produce a robust plant

when they do finally germinate, but are also costly to produce, plants that produce large

seeds produce far fewer than those that produce small seeds.

Small seeds may only germinate if they land in soil under the right circumstances.

They are much cheaper to produce, so whilst the majority may never germinate, they rely

on numbers for one to land under the right conditions.

A similar set-up could be observed in gametes.

When two large gametes fuse, the young will be very robust.

However, there may be smaller gametes, cheats if you will, who may attempt to fuse with

the larger gametes.

The zygote won't have as many resources as if two large gametes had fused, but still

sufficient for it to have a decent start, and less energy would have been invested in

producing the smaller gamete.

If two small gametes fuse however, the young would likely be unviable or of low fitness.

Therefore, these smaller cheats create conflict, which could be resolved by allowing larger

gametes to only fuse with smaller gametes, thus leading to the establishment of two mating

types.

However, in my opinion, this explanation does not provide a full story of how sexes evolved

- but it does provide some good foundations and an example of conflict resolution.

So let's scrap that theory and move onto the theory which I believe holds a lot more

strength - the Hurst-Hamilton hypothesis.

Much like the previous scenario, the ancestral state has isogamous unisexual gametes in which

all gametes can fuse with all, in a haploid population, and like the previous scenario,

sexes evolve as a means to resolve conflict, in this case, genetic conflict.

You see, when gametes fuse, they both contribute the same amount of genetic material from the

nucleus due to the way meiosis and gamete fusion operates.

This, however, is not the case with organelles, like mitochondria, which are the powerhouses

of the cells, or the chloroplasts, which enable photosynthesis to occur.

Organelles have their own separate DNA, and their number within a cell is variable.

This means that when two gametes fuse to form a zygote, it is highly likely that one will

contribute more organelles than the other, and by extension, one gamete will be supplying

more genetic material than the other - and this leads to genetic conflict.

As is the fashion in evolution, it's only a matter of time before an organelle-destroyer

gene evolves, which would wipe out the organelles contributed by the other gamete, so that their

organelles and respective genetic material are the only ones passed onto the next generation.

And as you may imagine, this mutation would spread like wildfire as it would quickly eliminate

all organelles without said mutation.

However, by the time this mutation has reached fixation, it generates a new problem: when

two gametes which both carry the organelle-destroyer gene fuse, the organelles would wipe each

other out, which would be devastating for the zygote, so this would prompt the evolution

of a suppressor genes.

The suppressor gene would prevent an organelle from destroying organelles from the other

gamete, but would also make their own organelles prone to destruction.

The evolution of suppressor genes leads to a situation of heterozygote advantage, whereby

the fusion of a gamete with the suppressor gene and one without yields the highest fitness.

You see, the fusion of two gametes without suppressor genes would likely be lethal, whereas

the fusion of two gametes with suppressor genes would lead to more diverse organelles,

but the zygote also incurs the cost of suppression twice - so the ideal situation is for a gamete

with suppressor genes and one without to fuse.

And because the ideal state is for opposite types to mate, this then leads to the evolution

of a brand new "Chooser" gene!

The Chooser gene essentially ensures fusion only occurs with a gamete of the opposite

suppressor profile.

This is usually done through protein recognition, and also represents an additional cost to

the gamete, but as long as the benefits from ensuring a heterozygote advantage with each

fusion outweigh the costs of having a choosy gene - it will be worth it and the gene will

slowly become fixed in the population!

And the last and final step in this process is associated with the linkage between the

Choosy gene and the suppressor type gene - in this case linkage refers to the genes being

physically close within the organelle's DNA, which strengthens them being selected

together and therefore guarantees the fixation of both Chooser genes and the suppressor types.

The outcome of this is anisogamy, which means that the two mating types have a different

size.

In essence, the gamete with suppression will have its organelles destroyed by the opposite

type, so these won't be contributed to the zygote and will have the bare minimum of organelles

to ensure the gamete can find one of the opposite type.

This gamete is generally referred to as the male gamete, and are generally smaller in

size.

On the other hand, the female gamete is the one without the suppressor gene, and will

be passing on all of her organelles and cytoplasm to the zygote, and is thus, much larger in

size.

This actually matches what we observe in nature, as mitochondria are almost universally maternally

transmitted, and the female gamete contributes the majority of cytoplasmic resources to the

zygote.

You could almost claim this theory shares some parallelisms with the first one presented,

although the conflict occurs at the genetic level, and the difference in size reflects

the compensation with regards to the organelles contributed to the zygote.

Male gametes are generally smaller and cheaper to produce, but they also don't pass on

the genetic material from their organelles, whereas the female gametes contribute the

majority of the cytoplasm, which is costly to produce, but they also get to contribute

the entirety of their organelle genetic material to the next generation.

And boom - there you go, how sexes evolve!

Now, I'm aware there are two main criticisms that this theory may receive.

The first is, "well Inés, that theory is cool and all, but it's a theory out of at

least 8 others, how do we know this is how the sexes originated?" and the second is,

"if this theory explains why two sexes evolve by having two opposite binary types, then

how do you explain species with multiple sexes?"; and both of these are valid points.

I think an in-depth reply to both of these criticisms would require an entire video in

itself - so I will keep my answers brief.

The answer to the first question I believe to currently be a matter of personal opinion,

as different academics will hold different beliefs - after all, seven of them came up

with competing theories.

Personally, I believe the Hurst-Hamilton hypothesis provides the most plausible explanation based

on genetic conflict for the origin of the sexes, but doesn't always justify how two

sexes are maintained in all situations.

On the criticism of explaining multiple sexes, I actually think their existence is the exception

that confirms the rule, as they do lend support to the Hurst & Hamilton hypothesis.

Organisms with multiple mating types are relatively uncommon, and the vast majority are found

in different fungal species.

It appears that those species with multiple sexes either represent intermediate states

which are inherently unstable and will eventually collapse down to two sexes, or they are species

which have found alternative ways of resolving organelle genetic conflict, such that two

sexes would not be a requirement.

Nonetheless, regardless of their origin, without a doubt the origin of the sexes has been a

crucial contributor to the development and evolution of more complex life forms as we

know them today and is truly, a revolutionary biological event.

I hope you enjoyed this video - as always, I appreciate this is a more complicated topic

than usual, so feel free to ask any questions in the comment section below.

The other thing is… this video is part of a very exciting collaboration on the topic

of evolution - there are various other creators who have covered the evolution of homosexuality

(which you have requested many times in comments!), the evolution of facial expressions, selfies,

words and more - so go check that out in the linked playlist.

Likewise, if you've watched them all and you're in the mood for more evolutionary

biology, can I cheekily recommend this playlist which I'm aiming to expand over the next

year.

And as always, thank you so much for watching me - and I'll see you in the next one!

Bye!

The Evolution of the Selfie - Duration: 6:49.

>> ALEX: Hey guys!

I'm here, let's get technical.

Did you know that the average millennial could take over 25,000 selfies in his or her life?

It's one of the most popular... oh, one sec, let me just post this to my story.

But, in the midst of all these duck faces and Kardashians, have you ever thought to

yourself, what is the history of the selfie?

What was the first selfie, and how did it get to what it is today?

Well, today, we'll answer that question by looking at... the evolution of the selfie.

<MUSIC>

So, a good place to start is "What is the First Selfie?"

Well, depends.

As you might have guessed, what constitutes a selfie is pretty loose, so depending on

your source, you might get a couple different things, so I'll just go as far back as I

can.

The first self portrait was made by a guy named Parmigianino in 1524.

It was a oil painting of himself in a mirror in his studio

There are two types of mirrors: concave and convex mirrors.

Concave mirrors curve in, sorta like a bowl, and convex mirrors bulge out, sorta like a

ball.

In this painting, Parmigianino is looking into a convex mirror.

We can also see his hand near the outside of the frame, really adding to that selfie

vibe.

You know what, it kinda looks like a photo taken by those new Snapchat Spectacles.

Huh.

Huh.

HUH!

It's amazing the similarities between this photo and the modern day selfie.

For example, Parmigianino was 21 years old when took this selfie, a typical age for a

selfie taker, and, since it was made, the painting changed hands many times and many

people have seen it.

The og social media.

And with that, we are thrust into the age of the drawing selfie.

Leonardo Di Vinci sketched this lit selfie in the 1512.

It's known as the Portrait of a Man in Red Chalk.

Leo was 60 when he made this selfie, which makes sense, because if you're a selfie

taker over 40, you're empirically more likely to male.

Next we have Rembrandt in 1630, whose etched selfie is particularly famous for being, well,

duck faced.

Rembrandt is famous for making tons of other pictures in this style, even other selfies,

but this one is famous because of that sweet, sweet duck face.

I guess we now know that Rembrandt isn't Rembland.

AhhhhhI'm so sorry.

Everyone told me I should do that, but what is life you can't make cringy puns?

>> BO BURNHAM: #Deep

The first photo selfie was taken in 1839 by a guy named Robert Cornelius, who is credited

on Wikipedia as, and I kid you not, "an American pioneer of photography...

and lamp manufacturer."

To take this famous selfie, Cornelius had to set up his camera in his family's store

in Philadelphia, take off the lens cap, run into frame, stand there for a minute, and

then put the cap back on.

Can you imagine having to stand still for a minute just to take a selfie?

I mean, that would be like

Sidenote, Robert Cornelius raised 8 children.

What have you done today?

*singing* Famous Vincent Van Gogh selfie from 1889 yea!

And with that, we enter what I like to call, the lowkey age of Selfies.

No big advancements, and we're just kinda stalling until we get to the turn of the century.

It is important to note, though, that a lot of these selfies were taken with the help

of mirrors.

It's kinda like a forced motif.

It's a common thing that comes up in all of theses selfies, but because they kinda

have to be in them.

Sure, there were a couple handheld ones like selfies we know today, but those weren't

common because, well, old cameras were big, and were heavy, and, as shown in this photo,

took two hands to hold.

auss

Also, I want to shout out to this JKF selfie.

Beachy vibes my man.

The first selfies on a lightweight, handheld mobile device was taken on gameboys like this

one.

They have a high quality 256×224 camera, so you know it's team crispy approved.

The first camera phone was released in November of 2000.

It was the Sharp J-SH04, and granted, the camera wasn't great, but it definitely pioneered

the technology.

It was also around this time when the world "selfie" was created.

Now, as Ben Zimmer for Slate explains "it's very likely that there was no single moment

when the word was created, no Ur-selfie."

Right?

It's not like someone was magically like...

SELFIE!!

While we don't know exactly when it's from, we do know where it's from.

Australia!

In Australia around that time, it was popular to add the suffix -ie to things, like, someone

from Australia is an Aussie, or a barbeque is a barbie.

Thus, if you combine self with the suffix -ie, you get selfie.

The first phones with a front-facing camera were the Motorola A835 and Sony Ericsson Z1010,

man how phone names have changed.

These phone were released in the second half of 2003.

And, now that that was established, one thing led to another, and selfies blew up.

As this Google trend graph shows, between 2013 and early 2014 was the time when selfies

really blew up.

Selfies are, unsurprisingly, most popular in Australia, the birthplace of the word,

and America.

Selfies have been all over the place in recent years.

The most retweeted tweet of all time is Ellen Degeneres's Oscar selfie.

National Selfie Day is June 21st.

Yes, that's actually a thing.

Apparently.

50% of male college students and 77% of female college students have shared selfies on Snapchat.

On the date this video was made, over 288 million pictures have been posted to hashtag

selfie on instagram.

14% of selfies have filters, and 36% of selfie photographers have confessed they've altered

or edited their selfie.

And, as you probably know, Selfie was Oxford's infamous word of the year in 2013.

Currently, everyone from political figures to celebrities, to everyday people take selfies.

Selfies, whether you like 'em or not, are part of popular culture, and for good reason.

Not only are we innately fascinated with ourselves, humans are also very social animals.

We have to share ourselves and our lives with other people, and other people have to do

the same with us.

So, the next time you hit that button at the bottom of your phone, remember the rich and

extensive history behind these digital self portraits.

Until next time, DFTBA, thanks for watching, and explore on.

<MUSIC>

Congrats to Sugar Slice & A Pizza Slice for winning the Bruce biography giveaway.

Congrats!

This video is part of a massive collaboration between a ton of educational youtubers.

Together, we look at the evolution of amazing things in our world.

Draw Curiosity asks "Why did two sexes evolve?", Conjecture asks "Why do facial expressions

evolve?", Alliterative asks "Why do word meaning evolve?", Art Explains asks "Why

would land animals evolve returning to the sea?", Soliloquy asks "Why does homosexuality

evolve?", and, of course, I look at how the selfie evolved.

If any or all of those video topics sound interesting to you, boom, there's a link

on screen to a playlist for you to check out.

There's also some other shenanigans and sub button and videos and see ya bye!

Matching Tattoos Laten Zetten | Bianca - Duration: 5:44.

Hi everyone!

A Dutch spoken video for the first time.

I still have to get used to that.

I truly hope that you like the language change.

We think that it sounds much better like this, because our English wasn't perfect.

I also sounded like I came from Amsterdam somehow, which isn't really the case.

As Scy said, please let us know what you think!

Do you like our Dutch videos or would you rather see us talking English again?

Let us know, because we can use your feedback.

But my video isn't about the language change and what's going to change.

Last weekend I went to a tattoo shop with Jochem to get ourselves some 'matching' tattoos.

Take a look at how that went.

This is Jochem's tattoo and it's still wrapped in plastic.

Tonight we can wash it a bit with some water.

Tomorrow we can show you what it looks like.

Aaand this is my tattoo, also still wrapped.

We have unwrapped them now.

It's a couple of days later.

They don't look so gross as before.

I'm super happy with my tattoo!

We really wanted to get matching tattoos, but we didn't want to get the same thing.

We still wanted them to look unique and have a connection at the same time.

So I've chosen a Taurus with a mandala background.

I actually wanted to get this tattoo on my inner arm

but because I already have on right here it just wouldn't have looked good at the end.

And that's now what we want, so I was like okaaay just put it on the other side of my arm.

So yea that is what happened, as you can see..

I'm totally happy with this placement after all.

I think it looks cool here.

When he was tattooing near the inside of my arm it was really hurting me a lot

so I think the pain wasn't too bad with this placement.

What is actually the story behind this?

It's not important to me that every tattoo I get has a real meaning.

I also like to get tattoos that just look pretty to me.

It doesn't need to have a story.

This does have a story though.

I'm really into astrology stuff and Jochem and I are both Aquarians.

Why didn't we get Aqua tattoos then?

That is actually, because I have a lot of Taurus influences too

and Jochem has Aries influences

My moon and ascendant are in Taurus and Jochem has an Aries moon.

That's why I chose a Taurus who's planetary ruler is Venus.

The planet of love, the feminine.

Jochem chose an Aries who's planetary ruler is Mars, the planet of war, masculine.

So this is why we really liked this matching tattoo idea for us.

At the end we both got the same placement.

I think we were at the shop from 11 a.m. till 4 p.m. and it took 2 and a half hours for me

and Jochem 2 hours I think.

We're really happy that we've got them now and we can't wait to get another one.

I think that we'll be somewhere before summer begins.

I really hope you liked this video in Dutch!

Tomorrow is Renate's turn, for the first time on our channel aaand yea..

I will see you guys next week.

Byee!
