Hi everyone. I'm Rincey this is Rincey Reads.
Today I'm going to be doing part 2 of my
January wrap up. I will link to part one
up in the cards so you guys can check that
out if you haven't watched it already.
But basically this month I read a lot or
at least more than I usually do. So I
decided to break up my wrap up into
parts so that way it's not, you know,
30-plus minutes long. So today I have a
four different things I'm going to be
talking to you guys about. These are all
books that I've read either during 24
in 48 or during diverseathon.
So the first thing I have is Iron Cast by
Destiny Soria. I don't know why I always
trip over the last name but I always do.
This is a young adult like historical
fantasy book. It takes place in 1919 in
Boston and you are basically following
these two girls. One of them is named
Ada and the other one is named Corinne and
they both have the sort of like magical abilities.
Ada is able to use music to
sort of like entrance people and
Corinne can do the same thing but
with words specifically. So she'll recite
like poetry and it'll entrance people. And
so they work at this sort of like
speakeasy sort of place and they perform
for the patrons. But it's like illegal to
do that. But also to keep like the bar
open and to keep everything afloat,
they also do this is sort of like a con.
Like they'll target specific people and steal
money from them basically while they're
entranced. They get into quite a bit of
trouble in here and so it's about them
sort of looking after each other and
looking after the other people that are
part of this. Sort of like what they do
when everything starts to go wrong.
I really enjoyed this book. I thought it
was a lot of fun. I did have some
quibbles with it. One of the biggest
ones is the fact that, like I said
earlier, it takes place in 1919 but
nothing about this book feels
historical at all other than the fact
that they keep talking about how
prohibitions going to come and when
prohibition comes then like the bars
gonna get shut down. But like they
don't talk like it's 1919, like nothing
about the style really feels like it's
in that era. So that was one of my quibbles.
I think the characters in here are
really interesting and I like the
magic system and how it's setup. But I do
think that some of the plot lines were a
little bit rushed but that just might be
because it's like a young adult story.
There were a lot of twists in here that
I didn't see coming which I really
appreciated. But overall I thought it
was just like a great fun story and kind
of like perfect for a readathon. So yeah, I
think this either three out of five
stars or three and a half out of five stars.
I don't remember completely.
The next thing I finished was Giant Days vol.2.
I don't have a lot to say about this
just because I feel like with Giant Days
there isn't a significant amount of plot.
Like these are all just slice of life
stories about these characters while
they're in college which personally I
really enjoy. There's nothing magical
happening here. There's nothing like
supernatural or sci-fi or anything like that.
So if that something you want in your
comics, then you're not going to enjoy
Giant Days. It's not like super dramatic
or anything like that. It's just fun.
These characters are funny and interesting.
I have the next volume
checked out from the library as well so
I'm hoping to get that this month.
I don't even think I rated this one on
Goodreads because I don't have like a
strong opinion about it. Like I enjoy it.
It's cute, it's fun, don't expect a
significant amount of depth. I just think
it's a fun series. The next book that I
finished was Someone to Watch Over Me.
And this is a mystery book translated
from Icelandic. Oh man, I gave this one a two
out of five stars. I was really
disappointed with this. I think because I
went into it with the wrong expectations.
I had heard this described as, in terms
of like the marketing, as being like a
thriller, like a Norwegian thriller like
Stieg Larsson or Jo Nesbo or whatever.
But it's not like that at all. It's more
like a straightforward mystery story.
It's very slow-moving. I didn't even find the
mystery that gripping. The part of it that
I liked is the fact that there's a
character here that has Down syndrome.
I should probably tell you the plot of this book.
Basically there is this character
named Jacob who has Down syndrome.
He is accused of burning down the
assisted-living facility where he was
and killing I think it's five people who
are inside the building. Someone in the
jail doesn't think that he actually did
it so they hire this investigator to
look into everything that has happened
and to see whether or Jacob
actuall committed the crime.
So what I like about this book is
there's a lot of discussion here about
people with various disabilities.
The main detective in here, Thora,
she thinks about a lot how those
perspectives and how her own biases are
coming into play with this case. And all
of that I really enjoyed. The actual
case itself, did not care about at all.
I feel like I had a really hard time, I
mean maybe it's just a me thing, but I had a really
hard time telling the characters apart.
I don't know if this is a translation, but this
book also wasn't like copy editors very
well which I can handle sometimes and
especially works in translation I can
handle a little bit. But I felt like there were
so many errors in this book. And yeah it's
just like the type of mystery book that
I personally don't really enjoy. I like
it when there's a lot more character development.
There's a lot of like side stuff
happening with Thora and her secretary that
I didn't find amusing even though I
think you're supposed to you. There's like
family stuff happening, which I feel like I
didn't really connect to and I don't know if that's just
because this isn't like obviously the
first in the series. So I don't know if I
needed that sort of background to be
able to care about those parts of the
story more. But yeah, it just didn't
really do much for me. So I gave it a 2
out of 5 stars unfortunately. And then
the final book that I finished in the
month of January was Among the Ruins by
Ausma Zehanat Khan. This is one of my most
anticipated books of this year and I loved it.
I think it's my favorite book in the series.
I've read the first two book in the
series, The Unquiet Dead and -- oh man I can't
even remember what the name of the second
book is. I will put the title on the
screen cause I can't think of it right now.
And I really enjoyed the first book
a lot, I didn't enjoy the second book
quite as much. But this one might be my
favorite so far in the series. In this
one we are following Detective Esa Khattak
as he goes to Iran for sort of like a sabbatical.
There are some things that
happen in the second book and he ends
up basically going on leave for a little
bit. And so he decides to go on a vacation
But while he's there, he ends up getting
recruited to sort of look into the
murder and disappearance of this really
famous filmmaker who made a documentary
about Iran's government and things like that.
And so he gets sort of wrapped up
in this mystery. I really enjoyed this
book a lot because you wanted a lot
about Iran and their history and their
government. I also really enjoyed this
book because I think the mystery was
really interesting and I think it
kept you on your toes. The quibble or
the one like complaint I have about
this book is the fact that his partner,
Rachel Getty, is in Canada and she's
basically investigating
as much as she can in Canada. Cause the
filmmaker I believe lived in Canada as well, or
was a Canadian citizen, I don't
remember exactly. So those two aren't
working together which I really kind of
missed and they do get reunited
eventually which made everything a lot
better in my opinion. I really like the
two of them working together a lot.
But yeah, I really, really enjoyed this one. I'm
actually going to be making a video I
think over on Book Riot about this
book specifically because I enjoyed it so much.
I highly recommend it. If you're
someone who likes mysteries and you
haven't check out these books yet,
please, please do because they're so fantastic
and they are totally underrated. So yeah
that's basically wraps up my January.
I was hoping to read more before the end
of the month but then you know like the
world or our country started falling
apart so I didn't have the time / energy
to read anymore. But yeah, you can always
follow me on Goodreads to see what I am
currently reading. I have links to like
all my social media down below. If you
have any questions about any of these
books definitely leave a comment down below
letting me know. Or if you've read them yourself
let me know what your thoughts are on
them as well.
So yeah, that's all I have for now and thanks for watching.
