Video Essay | A History of Representation in Zainichi Cinema - Duration: 3:48.

These days it's not hard to see how massive Korean entertainment is...

And in Japan, a country where K-Pop idols have flourished...

their success and their image is certainly visible in the country.

But for the Korean Zainichi

the name given to Japan's second largest group of minorities

being seen wasn't always easy.

In collaboration with Japanese Film Festival - Australia

which will be screening several films this year featuring

Zainichi filmmakers and characters...

We look back on how the Korean minority living in Japan have been represented in Japanese cinema

Early examples of Zainichi themes and characters are hard to come by

but as rare as they are these films often featured Japanese directors at the helm

The most recognisable of these filmmakers was Nagisa Oshima

best known for the cult classic IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES

Oshima was sympathetic to the Zainichi condition in Japan

and he used their experiences to make political statements in two of his films.

THREE RESURRECTED DRUNKARDS questioned Zainichi and Japanese identity

framing it in context of politics at the time.

While the controversial DEATH BY HANGING was notable

for featuring insanely to Korean actor in the leading role.

Soon came films unique to the Zainichi experience like RIVER OF THE STRANGER in 1975

which was hailed the first true Zainichi film in that it was authored by Zainichi filmmakers.

Japanese filmmakers also continue to expand on the Zainichi experience with films like FOR KAYAKO

a 1984 romance between a Zainichi man and a young Japanese woman

And EMPIRE OF KIDS, a gang film about delinquent teens living in Osaka.

Zainichi cinema was quickly growing and by 1993 it had broken into the mainstream.

Yoichi Sai's ALL UNDER THE MOON was a crossover success

and proved that Zainichi stories weren't just niche indie fare.

The followed a Zainichi cab driver's daily life living on the fringes of Japanese society.

ALL UNDER THE MOON was a smash hit and picked up many awards along the way.

This trend would continue with popular and award-winning films like the coming-of-age drama GO

BREAK THROUGH, a youth period comedy with violent overtones...

and BLOOD AND BONES, a dark period drama which was also written and directed by Yoichi Sai.

Today there's certainly more Zainichi visibility in Japan's film industry

with actors like Hanae Kan, Hirofumi Arai and Miyavi

all regularly working in Japan and abroad.

While current filmmakers in the business include Lee Sang-il, director of murder mystery RAGE...

Mipo Oh, director of the dark drama THE LIGHT SHINES ONLY THERE

Kiki Sugino, director of the surreal indie SNOW WOMAN...

and Wishing Chong, whose new film YAKINIKU DRAGON is a period drama about a Zainichi family

which will screen at this year's Japanese Film Festival.

With each new generation of Zainichi, more oppurtunities have opened up

for future generations of Zainichi storytellers and personalities.

And as conversations around representation occur worldwide

we can only imagine what the possibilities hold for Zainichi cinema in the future.
