- When I think of a martini,
I think of Fred Astaire in a tuxedo.
I think of like the Chrysler Building.
The Martinez is the grandfather of the martini.
It's still a great drink, but I don't think it's something
that everybody knows how to make.
The Martinez could be like the wagon wheel,
and then the martini is like the Aston Martin
of the whole thing.
The Martinez is Old Tom Gin, a sweet gin,
sweet vermouth, and a Maraschino Liqueur,
made from Marasca Cherries and like pits,
anything to sweeten to cocktail up.
Developed in the 1860s,
there was a story that says that a gold miner
walked into a bar in Martinez, California,
and asked the bartender to make him a cocktail
to commemorate his success,
and that's apparently what he was made.
And then that develops in to the martini.
You know you take out the Maraschino,
and if your using London Dry Gin, and then you're using
the dry vermouth, it's a very clean drink.
It's like a scaled down, sleek version of it.
If I was making my Martinez,
I would use one and 1/2 ounces of Old Tom Gin,
one and 1/2 ounces of sweet vermouth,
and a quarter ounce of Maraschino Liquer,
and a couple of dashes of Angostura Bitters.
Add ice, stir for 20 to 30 seconds,
take your chilled coupe,
pour in the contents,
and then just dust it with a little lemon twist,
and voila, the Martinez.
It's a beautiful cocktail.
My dad used to work as a bartender
at Rockefeller Center, and he would talk about these
businessmen coming in and making cocktails
and sort of, you know three martini lunch.
And they would make pitchers of it.
I don't know how you could go back to work (laughs).
So, if I was gonna make a classic gin martini,
I would use two ounces of gin,
preferably, London Dry,
and a 1/2 ounce of dry vermouth,
add ice, stir, 20 to 30 seconds,
and add a olive.
Pour into your chilled glass,
there you have it.
It's a kick, it'll set you back a bit.
You'd have to take it easy on them.
I think it's a cocktail that's just
never gonna go out of fashion.
At some point, you're gonna order one.
There's something very sophisticated about it, right.
Which is not the Martinez.
There just, it's so bizarre,
the martini and the Martinez, wow.
It's like a happy accident.
