start recording of the session
I'm going to let you know
that this is going to be
an interactive session so again I'm glad
to have you all join me today
I'm assuming that this is also a session
that A you're here because you're
required to attend so many sessions and
hopefully B because you're really
interested in this topic so hopefully
this ends up being a nice
a fun
next hour
so what I'm going to do is I'm
going to go ahead and cut out my webcam
and I'm going to share my application
so fingers crossed that this works out
as we were discussing earlier
with technology
wouldn't be a surprise if something goes wrong
but fingers crossed
can everyone see the screen
Yes Alright
Fantastic
so when's webinar best practices
one of the things that I do
want to mention if you at any time
during this presentation cannot hear the
audio you have purple icons along the
bottom right corner of your screen you
could go ahead and select those purple
arrows to expand the panel and then you
can also click the gear icon to open the
settings and then double check your
audio and video settings so if you lose
audio at any time go ahead and do that
also if worst case scenario go ahead
and exit and then re-enter the session
as we did
a lot of you have your
microphone capabilities you're very
welcome to use the microphone if you
don't want to you're also very welcome
to use the chat tool as a few so you
have already demonstrated earlier so
today's goal is very very simple I'm
just going to share some of the training
industry best practices for facilitating
an interactive synchronous web session
just as simple as that
so let's go ahead and really get started
the most important thing is to have
interaction in your web session if at
all possible this is one way to make
your attendees stay engaged one way
to keep them awake
you want to incorporate visual and physical
interaction because that is crucial to
keeping their attention and drawing
their attention to the screen
so question for all of you how often
should you visually engage your
attendees pretty much have them use
something new or see something new so go
ahead and use the chat tool again click
on the purple arrows to expand that menu
and type your guest how often should you
visually engage your attendees
I have every five to seven feet
I know you mean a seconds minutes
I'm assuming
every few minutes two to three minutes
two minutes six minutes three to four minutes
you're going to be surprised with the
answer that training industry has to
give the training industry's
recommendation and of course I'm
mentioning the training industry I think
this could also be helpful in an online
course the suggestion is every 30 to 90 seconds
so how do you do this well one
thing that you can definitely do is
use the tools that are available in your
web conferencing system so depending on
the system that you're using if you're
using Blackboard Collaborate or another
tool you will want to go ahead and use a
pointer maybe a highlighter tool
use PowerPoint built-in tools so have minor
or simple animations go ahead and take
advantage of using the tools that you
normally use in PowerPoint maybe even
share your application very helpful if
you're having individuals
learn something on eCampus maybe you're giving
that virtual tour of your eCampus
Course pull up your application share
your screen have images a lot of you are
probably staring at the guy with the
binoculars on the screen that's also one
way to catch their attention and if at
all possible create movement by
navigating to the next slide so another
question how often should you physically
engage your attendees meaning that they
touch the keyboard or the mouse go ahead
and type your answer or your guess in
the chat box okay every three to five
minutes every minute every three minutes
those are actually pretty good guesses
recommendation is every two to three
slides or every three to five minutes
depending on how context heavy your
slides are so great job with those
guesses sounds fantastic
one of the things that you could do is
to keep your students engage physically
engage you can open the phone lines what
this means is you can invite them to ask
questions during your session so if for
example I wanted to go ahead and stop
and ask does anybody have any questions
at the moment that's one way that you
could keep your students engage it gets
a little tricky you definitely want to
make sure that you have a plan for
managing the talking that happens in the
online session so if you encourage
students or allow students to use their
microphone in their webcam you may ask
them to raise their hand beforehand or
raise your hand before they speak wait
until they're called on similar to in
the classroom environment you can
encourage them to use the chat tool if
drawing tools are made available you
could have them use those drawing tools
and maybe even have your students share
their application we'll talk more
about that in a little bit and perhaps
the most popular ways to keep their
students physically engaged is to have a
poll
so for a few do's and don'ts one thing
you don't want to do in a live
synchronous web session is regurgitate a
script I know it seems like the best
ideal it's like the next thing to do
but it's also easy for you to lose attention
from the chat messages that are coming
through assume that you have some multi
task you have to talk about the content
and then you also have to see if the
student is asking questions through the
chat box it's okay to have an outline or to
have bullet point for example I have
printed my PowerPoint slide with note
pages and I just have my handwritten
notes so that I know that I don't skip
anything as I'm speaking to you during
this live session
you also do not want to use non words um
uhs errs of course they're going to slip
out every now and then but try to reduce
the use of non-words if at all possible
rehearse ahead of time have your outlines
go through make sure you know that
exactly what it is that you want to say
and then that should help eliminate
those non words when you actually get to
your live session
don't rush usually where the web session
it's timed whether it's a session that
you're doing for your students so that
they could join virtually synchronously
whether this is a web meeting that
you're setting up for your colleagues or
someone in your department a meeting
with somebody else at another
institution do not rush skip information
if you're on a time crunch if you have
PowerPoint slides available try to have
perhaps some of the least important
information at the end of the slide so
that you could go ahead and go through
and skip this slide if needed
don't use qualifiers you want to avoid
sounding unsure about what you're
talking about again you're the
instructor you're the subject matter expert
the last thing you want to do is say I
hope this information is correct I wish
you understand what I'm saying I think
this is the case or maybe this is the
case so again avoid qualifiers
don't ramble I know I'm really good at that so
that's something that I'm personally
working on but try to keep on topic
especially when you're online you don't
have that luxury of having the students
in that face-to-face classroom you don't
have the luxury to walk around or to
stand behind somebody to catch their
attention so try not to ramble
don't over apologize
if you have technical issues
don't apologize for the technical issues
Tech really they're out of your
hands so if you do have technical issues
try to handle those quietly maybe have a
teaching existed or a colleague join you
as a co-presenter have them take care of
any technical issues that occur during
the live session
what you do want to do
in a web session if you want to push
your energy you want to be enthusiastic
let students know that you're just as
interested to be here as they are or at
least pretend like you're interested to
be there have someone in the room that's
sometimes help I've had instructors tell
me that that helped out when I shared
that tip with them to have a colleague
or another student or to even do this
during a live lecture to have an
audience in the room so that you don't
drain your energy you don't become quiet you
don't stray from the topic speak louder
it's so easy to sit in the comfort of
your own chair and to get a little quiet
because it's kind of your relaxing place
so definitely you want to speak louder and
if possible if you're that type of
person at least smile while you're talking
I'm smiling right now giggle when i make
myself laugh with my corny jokes and
another thing that you could do
is you can
use names to tell stories and in all
honesty it is so much easier to use your
students names from a web session such
as this that it is in a classroom so
imagine if you had a hundred students in
a face-to-face class what are the
chances that you remember at least five
of your students' names and their faces
probably not but in an online situation
what i have is i have on the side of my
screen next to my powerpoint slide a
list of everybody's name so one of the
things that i could do if i'm going
ahead and talking about pushing your
energy i may be able to look at my
roster and say Mariana is really good about
that when she talks to her students in
class she definitely pushes her own
energy in the classroom and that's
something that Paul and Greg do as well
so definitely catch captures their
attention when you use those names
You pause
and breathe you may have heard me do
that a few times not only in the face of
base class but also online here I tend
to speak really fast and then I have to
pull myself back pause and breathe you
can pause and breathe when you're not
quite sure where you're headed if you
lose your train of thought pause and
breathe at the end of a key point when
you're changing slides perhaps at the
end of a sentence or at the end of
really important information a chunk
of information that you have presented students
silence is okay this is an
opportunity to let the information sink
into your skin helps with the retention
helps with reflection as well
do be concise and decisive
do use inflection in your voice this is a great
way for not only emphasizing or showing
off your enthusiasm but you could use
that inflection you can change your tone
you can change your words to capture
your students attention to give them
that auditory notification that
something is really important
again change your voice
take your pauses and raise your voice when
you may want to make a good point
lower your voice when it's necessary
and be sure to do your best to articulate and
enunciate clearly because some students
some learners they like to read your
lips if at all possible if you're not
using a webcam such as myself I had
turned off my webcam you want to be sure
that you articulate and enunciate as
clearly as possible so don't be afraid
to go slow
one thing you want to do or
take into consideration at least is
develop slides for interaction minimize
the amount of text on screen
try to reduce any clutter so if you have
columns of bullet points on your slide
don't be afraid to break that up into
smaller chunks and have multiple slides
again that kind of helps with creating
movement that keeps your students your
audience something to watch on screen
and not get too easily distracted or
draw their attention away from your content
try to avoid eyesores no flashy
colors no click here emotions keep gifs
limited and try to use screenshots for
interactions using screenshots does two
things it reminds you as a presenter
that okay you have a question for your
students you may have noticed earlier
that I had my questions on a slide and I
had a screenshot of the chat tool to
remind you as a participant to use the
chat tool so the second option or
the second reason for using screenshot is
to catch your audience attention
well the truth is you're probably doing it
right now you're probably multitasking
listening to what I have to say I have
limited items or images on my screen so
you're probably checking email checking
something else out but as you move create movement
in the course that draws attention back
because there's that little flash of
color you may have some text and some
screens or images that they maybe
interested in seeing such as on this slide
do you currently have any question
regarding interaction so raise your hand
if you would like to use the microphone use
the chat tool to provide an answer
no questions thank you Mariana yes
confirmation that I haven't lost you all
okay so if you think about this slide
right here Q&A break I have my question
that was my reminder to ask you if you
had any questions I had screenshots that
way if no one has been participating
they have not used blackboard
collaborate ultra in the past they could
look at the screen shot and see oh let
me use the chat tool it looks like this
or oh let me go ahead and raise my
hand it looks like this
but one of the things that I just did is I opened the
phone lines I was giving you an
opportunity to vent to provide a comment
to ask a question about the topic that I
have mentioned such as Greg you
mentioned managing interaction are
their best practices for that especially
for a large class yes perfect segue yes
Greg there is which brings me to the
next slide opening the phone lines one of
the things that I mentioned earlier is
it can be tricky tricky because you
don't want to say are there any
questions and then have everyone asking
questions at the exact same time on the microphone
or having absolute silence
where nobody says anything
so when it comes to managing a large class or even
a small group have some kind of
guidelines some kind of rule maybe one
of your earlier slides could be or
something in the learning management
system could state here are the rules of
the online session feel free to use a
microphone if so raise your hand and
wait until you're called on you may
encourage them to only use the chat tool
but depending on the web conferencing system
that you use such as blackboard
collaborate ultra you can disable
the chat tool from individuals as well
even if you enable the microphone maybe
Rebecca decides to have a side
conversation with a colleague who enters
her office you as the instructor the
presenter can also go and meet through
microphones so recommendation is if you
allow for the use of the microphones
set those ground rules personally my two
cents at least if you're going to have
maybe more than 20 individuals turn the
microphone off leave it off encourage
them to use the chat if needed you can
enable microphone usage for individual
participants in your session
chat tool is going to be everyone's best friends
if you have a large class Greg
recommendation have a partner join you
if at all possible to manage the chat
and we'll talk more about that later
when it comes time to opening the phone
lines and managing interaction
be patient feel free to sit wait one of the
things that I noticed earlier Larry was
having difficulties logging into the
session depending on the web
conferencing system that you use you may
be able to see if someone has a slow
connection or if they're having some
kind of technical problems accessing or
joining that live session so feel free
to take your pauses take your little
breathers give people a little time as
you're going through PowerPoint slide
presentations if they're not like my
presentation with images and you have
text may be several bulleted bullets of
text you definitely want to pause
between slides to give those on a slower
broadband or slower connection time to
have that refresh on their page so I may
be going through here and if I go ahead
and click my slides back it moves
immediately for me but it might take 10
seconds for Katie to then see the slide
that I'm getting ready to talk about so
large classes I recommend just tech
tools
if you allow microphones have those rules
have them raise their hand have a
co-presenter if at all possible and have
more time for pausing and breathing in
between slides especially if you're
sharing your screen if maybe you're
showing a website or showing students
how to use the certain software program
that they're going to use to complete an
assignment take your time and go slow
in addition to opening phone lines
perhaps everyone's favorite is polling
polling is a great way to keep your
students engaged
it's a great way to keep
them interactive
one suggestion that
I personally have is have your poles on
a slide if you are presenting with a
PowerPoint slide or a Google slide create
a slide specific to that question again
it does two things number one it prompts
you at the presenter or remind you to
start a poll a lot of web conferencing
tools such as collaborate ultra WebEx
gotomeeting has a polling tool available
in the system
the second thing that this
does the serves as your backup
I had my fingers crossed earlier
Penny and I were talking about it earlier
technology isn't perfect
yes it's true
so by having your poll questions on a slide
if the poll tool within the web
conferencing system doesn't work you
could then switch gears quietly little
technical issues quietly and
then tell folks okay go ahead and answer
your question provide your answer to
this question in the chat box
so let me go ahead and demonstrate the use of a poll
I have my poll on a slide
question that I am going to ask you in a moment
don't answer yet
is when should you use a pole
would it be number one
immediately to engage the audience
number two to introduce the new topic
number three to understand current level of knowledge
number four at the end of
the topic to test knowledge
or would it be number five all of the above
so I am going to go ahead and begin polling
so you should have a poll that pops up in
the center of your screen
go ahead and provide your answer
I'll give you a hint
it is not number six all right one of the nice
all right one of the nice
things about this if your web
conferencing tool allows you
to use a pole there's a really good chance that
it also lets you know if some
individuals have not responded
so I'm currently looking through this and I
could see that they're I'm lacking two
responses of course one of those is my
own response but there's one other
person who hasn't quite responded yet
so oh and I know who that is
that's Isabelle
ha ok so what I could do is I could go
ahead and I can show the responses
that looks like to be said number three to
understand current level of knowledge
five of you or eight of you said number
five all of the above Isabel and I
haven't responded so that's perfectly
alright we already know the answer
the correct answer is number five
all of the above
absolutely you can in Blackboard Collaborate
you can close the box read
the answers and then reopen the box to respond
so polling definitely immediately
engages your audience it introduces a
it's a great way to introduce a new topic one
of the nice things about this is it
also lets you know if there's a lot of
information that you want to cover but
time is limited you can kind of gauge
the current level of knowledge that your
students are coming into this session with
so right before you hit a main topic ask students
do you want me to
cover this do you feel comfortable
knowing this ask them a question kind of
like a pop quiz ungraded question and
that will let you know if you could skip
that topic altogether if you can kind of
go through it fast or if this is one
topic that you're going to need to spend
a lot of time on now a lot of
instructors also love to have a poll
question at the end of the topic to test
the knowledge did you understand this
what was the definition of this is it A
B C or D so definitely these are
different ways that you can engage your
students in the online course
hint to those of you that are in the data
collection group
iClickers or another
polling software is another way to do
this in a physical face-to-face
classroom environment as well
Mariana I do apologize that you are not able how
to activate the response but hopefully
or maybe we'll have another chance
depending on the time to play around
with it later as well
so is there a how-to for polling in
blackboard collaborate ultra
yes if you go to help.blackboard.com yes try to
remember that correctly and I'll add
that in
the text area as well you will be able
to find how to documentation for using
blackboard collaborate ultra blackboard
collaborate ultra and the old version of
collaborate is integrated in eCampus in
our learning management system
I'm kind of curious to know which group I'm in right
now right but it is available
we also have a resident expert Jacob Wilson in
our department who will also be able to
answer any questions so you can always
email ITS help at tamu.edu or
give us a call at 458-3417
ask about collaborate you'll most likely get
Jacob and he'll be able to answer your
questions about polling but yes there are
how to guides for doing so
drawing tools pros and cons to drawing tools
okay
con is you could have all students
draw at one time I can guarantee you and
from my own past experiences I used to
give a virtual webinar the student
orientations at the last institution
that I worked for
we had drawing tools enabled and guarantee there are immediately
be people to drawing on the screen that
gets a little distracting so you
definitely want to set those ground
rules or depending on your web
conferencing tool that you're using have
it disabled until you actually need it
enabled to allow students if you're going
to allow them to use the drawing tools so
hint hint however there are more benefits
to using the drawing tools
one is to guide the audience eyes so if for
example right now i'm showing my screen
sharing my screen application so i'm not
able to use the drawing tools at the
moment but one of the things that you
can do in all web conferencing tools
because you can import your PowerPoint
directly into the tool once you do so
you have enabled those drawing tools for
you as a presenter always enabled for
you and you can actually draw and
annotate right there on the screen and
your students your audience will be able
to see that live in real time it is
perfect
if you have busy visuals so if you have
a lot of busy visuals maybe you have a
screenshot of a chart you could use the
drawing tool to emphasize or highlight
or point to a certain area that you're
talking about on the chart one of the
questions or one of the examples that
was brought up in yesterday's
face-to-face session is having a large
chart but only talking about one little
segments drawing tools will help that
very helpful during a demo now
Blackboard Collaborate as I mentioned
you cannot share your screen and then
annotate directly on the screen however
there are other tools such as web
meetings that's available through
A & M that allows you to share your
screen and draw directly on your screen
as you are demonstrating a website
or how to use the software program so take
advantage of that if at all possible
one of the examples that I just mentioned is
using drawing tools to grant your
students to be able to participate and
keep them engaged so what I'm going to
do it is i'm going to share a blank
white board
and I want you to take advantage of the
drawing tools that are displayed along
the top of your web browser and feel
free to just start drawing write your
name draw a shape draw on top of
everybody else
didn't have to tell that person twice yes
that is great I love it so I am going to
attempt to do something early I am and
I have my fingers crossed that this is
going to work out fingers crossed
wish me the best of luck
so I'm going to stop the whiteboard for
a moment don't do anything yet hold on
one moment
aw it doesn't work
weII yay technology so examples on how else
you could use the white a white board
and this would require early preparation
unfortunately I had a little technical
issue but there are always work around everything
I love this you can
attempt to set this up
so that you provide your
students with a template of sort
to then annotate directly on the screen so
you can have kind of a worksheet of some
sort remember the punch diagram you can
have something like that on your
whiteboard pros and cons of giving a
live webinar session and then you can
encourage your students your audience to
take advantage of the drawing tools to
then go on here and start annotating
you can also take advantage of this as the
presenter as well if you had a
screenshot I was attempting to put up a
screenshot of Camtasia Studio a moment ago
you could go ahead and take
advantage of the drawing tools to pull up a pointer
do all of you see the pointer
that is dancing below the cons word
so you can also do this to guide your
learners as well
so those are some of the the advantages to using
your drawing tool
yeah thank you for thumbs up
I am excellent or at least that's what
I'm going to tell myself
so in addition
to drawing tools
examples of what you could do
one of the screenshots or the images that I was
trying to put on the board you can upload
images ahead of time prior to starting
your web session in this example one of
the things that I have done in my
student orientations that I've given it
the last institution that I've worked in
is where would you like to travel to or
in that case because a lot of our
students were soldiers where are you
currently located and then they would
take advantage of the drawing tools and
they would highlight that was a whole
lot of fun for them
the other example that I was hoping to show you
was if you were to have a software program I could
have come through here with the drawing
tools permitted and I kind of
highlighted certain areas on here
identified which area is the clip in
where you'll be able to access your
media and the a lot of the effects and tools
which area in camtasia studio is
your preview window which is also an
editable canvas and then which area is
your timeline so of course I don't have
the drawing tool but since I am sharing
my application you most likely see my
mouse cursor along the bottom so again
different work arounds if you have
technical issues don't panic there's
likely a work around and if you have it
on your slide you have your back up as well
another thing that you can do depending
is give your students control
promote them to a presenter most if not all web
conferencing systems allow you to do this
now Greg I do not recommend this
for a large enrollment class
probably best if you have 20 or less students
this is a great way for you to change
presenters maybe your students are
actually giving a speech maybe you're
encouraging them to give a presentation
but you're allowing them to do it from
the comfort of their own home you could
give them that control that you go ahead
and give their presentation this is a
great way to do a mock-up interview as
well to do a mock-up interview as well
so different reasons or different ways
that you give control it's great to
verify understanding if you have a
mathematical problem that you want
students to complete and you want them
to demonstrate that they know the
formulas necessary to answer that
I'm sorry I'm not a math person huh I did it
down I apologize so you can pull up the
whiteboard give someone control to use
that whiteboard again depending on your
web conferencing tool you can block the
whiteboard to everyone except the one
person that you want to have control of
it and they can go ahead and demonstrate
and annotate that problem right there on
the screen
one of the things that happened yesterday is
Center for Teaching Excellence liberal arts and
ITS presented an eight ways training in
our ITS classroom and as you can see
ITS classroom had of major redesign and
we were discussing ways on how to make
the session more engaging for next
semester well one of the suggestions or
the ideals that we came up with is
since everyone was able to switch to
their computer screen on the big screen
go ahead and give them control in a
technical situation especially if you're
showing or demonstrating how to use the
software program maybe get that student
control speak them or talk
them through the steps for doing it and
they're the ones who are presenting and
their learning it too they're getting
that hands-on experience as well as
being guided by you as the instructor and
everyone else gets to see it so you can
always switch control from student to
student give them that learning
opportunity that active learning
opportunity in a virtual situation
it keeps them involved and it makes sure
that they pay attention especially if
you call on your students maybe one of
the goals one of the things that you
state at the beginning of your session
is this is going to be an interactive session
I may call on your name so that
you could demonstrate how to do
something or so that you could talk
about something answer whatever
question that I have specific to you
this also helps encourages your learners
your students to really pay attention in
that web session where as you know with
technology it's so easy to switch to
another tab or browser and look up
something else and do something else as well
so with that do I have a volunteer
to share their screen with the group
alright on your mark get set
okay good yeah
so what I am going to do for you Greg is I
kept giving you moderator access so if
you haven't done so I want you to go
ahead and click on the purple arrow
icons at the bottom right again only
Greg could do this
select the share
content icon so it will be the third tab
so you have your chat you then have the
participants and then you have a share
content and then go ahead and share application
make sure you have work
appropriate items on your computer
before you do that so as Greg is doing
this one thing to keep in mind if you do
allow your students to do this is they may have to
yeah Greg got that fast
they may have to install a plug-in so
something to keep in mind if you are
having them share an application no
matter what web conferencing system
they're using maybe you let them know
ahead of time or what I was going to do
for Greg if it was going to take him awhile
is that it's going to buy time by
continuing my lecturette so Greg feel
free to pull up another website
do you have a favorite like short video clip
or commercial you want to show us
or not
I think we lost Greg
But he gets the general idea Greg is able to
share his application he is able to show
off a website maybe I want him to show
me what tools that he's going to be
incorporating in the technology matrix
document it so I could have him pull up
his website I could have him access that
website think about if you're giving
your students a tutorial or you're
having virtual office hours maybe a
student comes to you and say I don't
understand how to see this part of the
assignment can you tell me how to do
this well you could definitely provide
them with the screen instead of you
showing them how to do it you talk them
through the steps so that they can
retain that information a lot better
yes a video yeah
that's a nice video
there we go fantastic thank you Greg
I am going to demote you now
so
just a few ideals
when it comes to using a webcam you
definitely want to look into the webcam
lens because this is your eye contact
with the student you want to use it
periodically you may have noticed that I
used it at the very beginning when I was
introducing myself or when I was
welcoming everyone that was joining the
session as I was giving an introduction
to the session and then I went ahead and
cut off my webcam because the last
thing I wanted you to do was be
distracted with my visual so to speak
another thing regarding the webcam again
have that icon definitely want to have
that eye contact you don't want to clutter background
so
if at all possible try to avoid clutter background
if you have something that's not
appropriate so to speak have a lot of
toys get rid of that I was looking at a
lot of your webcams those of you that
shared your webcam your backgrounds are
perfect you definitely want to make sure
that you have plenty of lighting in your
office I have to admit I've been moved
to Jacob's office I've also been demoted
to the back but fortunately I have
enough lighting in here so that's quite nice
another thing you want to make sure you
do is try to keep your camera level to
your head and I'm struggling with this a
little bit earlier but you do have that
option of preview before you actually
share your camera and a lot of web
conferencing tools especially in
collaborate you don't want your camera
angled up does anybody want to take a
guess as to why you don't want your
camera lower and angled up at you
guesses
haha Katy yes don't want to look up your
no one wants to look up your nose
that gets really distracting
people looking up your nose that's correct
so if at all possible keep the
camera level don't have a top-down view
don't have a bottom of you don't have it
angled also one of the things that you
definitely want to avoid is you want to
avoid looking at your screen which is
another reason why I turned off my
webcam because you kind of lose that
engagement with your students they're
distracted from looking at the
PowerPoint slide presentation or the
application that you're sharing with them
their focused more on you and then of
course even though how do I say this
even though you're not in the same room
they feel a little disengaged because you
don't have that eye contact you're too
busy looking at your monitor you're too
busy looking at your second monitor
monitor or being distracted with
anything else that's going on in your
office you also don't want your webcam
on too long because you may have a lot
of students that get a little noisier
interested and start looking at your
background behind you as well
reason I say that is because I have worked with
instructors that had a bookcase behind
them in particular and they had an
object it was a computer science course
so they had a different computer related
object and they switched it for every
live session that they did and they gave
students one point extra credit for
identifying what changed in the
background so you can see that but you
don't want students staring maybe have
that at the beginning of your webcam at the
beginning have it again at the end or in
my case explaining or demonstrating how
to best use the webcam so now I'm going
to go ahead and cut off my webcam so I
can focus on the PowerPoint
last thing that I want to talk about
is the use of a producer actually kind
of going back to the question that Greg had
about how to manage interaction in a
large enrollment course
the producer is just one name it could be a co-presenter
it could be a moderator it could be a
host really this is somebody that is your
co-pilot yeah I think that's the
best way to say that best to use if you
have 20 or more individuals or as some
of you mentioned prior to the start of
this session if you're not familiar with
the web conferencing tool that you're
using then maybe if you had 10 or more
individuals definitely have that
producer by your side not literally they
could be at their own computer
this producer can manage technology so one of
the things that I mentioned earlier is
technology isn't perfect there's that
potential that technology may go wrong
for you as a presenter so having that
producer if for whatever reason you get
kicked out the producer can continue
where you left off stall for a little
bit while you get yourself adjusted and
get back into the session but at the
same time what if your learners had
some technical issues what if all of a
sudden Mariana cannot hear audio
she puts in a chat message that says I
cannot hear audio can you help me out
while you as the presenter the
instructor can't just drop everything
that you're doing to help this one
individual you're actually teaching to
your entire course so the producer could
definitely come in and help out with any
technical issues that take place
the producer going back to managing
interaction can help manage background
conversations so maybe there's a
question that is not really applicable
to the course as a whole that producer
can take a look at the chat answer
immediate questions that won't
necessarily be available to the class or
pertinent to the class as a whole but at
the same time they are that chat monitor
so as you notice you're welcome
ask questions at any time I am
comfortable with that I am comfortable with
collaborate we have a nice small group
but if there were more individuals like
Isabel has joined a moment ago I may ask
Isabel to monitor the chat and then at
some point when I'm ready to open the
phone lines I would then ask Isabel
Isabel are there any questions that
people have post them in the chat so
that I don't have to personally go back
and forth from the chat and you know be
distracted with a chat and then talk
about what it is but I'm presenting on
the slide another thing that comes in
handy is having two voices so if you
have mentioned that when Jennifer and I
presented together that it was kind of
nice because we bounce off of each other
well that created a more relaxing
environment so maybe even consider
having that co-producer to be that
second voice to have more of an informal-ish
type of online setting for your
students
are some of the training industry's best
practices for having an interactive
webinar are there any questions
if you don't have questions go ahead and
give me a no or some kind of a smiley
face of some sort where do you get
images for your presentation you mean
for any general presentations or the
presentations that I have been using
so personally I am using Microsoft
PowerPoint I just go ahead and select
the option for
option for hello going to my insert tab
and I just use online pictures so for
me the benefit of doing this is with
Microsoft fingers crossed that it comes
up I could then go ahead and put in my
keyword search and Microsoft already
automatically searches for images
through the creative commons so I don't
have the copyright issues so that's how
I find a lot of my images you can also
search and well there's more information
in module 3 related to this but you can
also search a soft photography for
example flickr if you go to flickr.com
you can search for images through the
creative commons more file is another
one there are a lot of different options
you could go directly to Wikipedia and
search their Creative Commons' images and
videos as well
questions
several of you don't have questions
Hope you enjoyed this session hopefully you
found it helpful how many of you are
currently using a web conferencing tool
to facilitate some synchronous sessions
with your students whether it's a
virtual office hours or actual one hour
two hour sessions hand raises yes or
no's in the chat box
have not with these tips is this
something that you might consider
okay not sure how to make it work in your
course possibly one of the things I
highly recommend in fact Lisa from Bush
School does this all the time before you
do it have a trial run you're always
very welcome to contact members of ITS
contact your colleagues your peers
someone in your department someone
outside of the system and then try it
out if you are using eCampus for example
in all of your courses including your
practice course your development course
that we created for you you do have
access to a room so you can practice
using the room see how that works out
for you so a recommendation is
definitely practice and see what happens
there what software is needed if I
wanted to connect undergraduate students
with public schools to promote stem and
going to college if you're speaking
about virtual connection so to speak
such as this session a lot of web
conferencing tools to include
collaborate which we're using right now
allows you to generate a guest share URL
so that's actually what is in the
eCampus course right now you haven't you
logged in with your credentials in the
eCampus to access it but I could have used that
same URL and emailed it to someone who's
not affiliated with A & M so this is also
a great way to bring in guest speakers
that may be working in the industry or
with another institution so in regards
to software it's just a matter of
finding the right web conferencing tool
that allows for that guest URL
other questions
for the first time I'm finishing early
if you do have questions feel free to
let me know if you are interested to
learn more about blackboard collaborate
ultra I recommend sending that email to
ITS help and again you'll most likely be
directed to Jacob and Jacob is our
resident expert he's awesomely bought
for collaborate and he'll be able to
help you with anything that you want to
know such as the polling question that
was asked earlier so any tips tricks and
if you're interested in what features
may be coming in the pipeline or what's
on the road now one of the things that
we don't have with ultra is breakout
rooms but that's something that we're
hoping to have hopefully by the end of the
year of course I used something that I
said don't use which is the word hope
but something to take into consideration
there's also the old version of
Blackboard Collaborate which does allow
for breakout rooms again that's one
thing that you can use as well I didn't
mention it here because i'm using ultra
can demonstrate breakout rooms but you
can't actually break out have students
break out in a group within a virtual
session if your tool allows it so thank
you for your time you are all going to
receive credit get a participation
credit and i hope you have a great
afternoon
I enjoy reading through the articles. I absolutely loved every little bit of this. I have you book-marked your blog to be able to check out the latest stuff in the future.
