The black good found on LV-233, also known Chemical A0-3959X.91, or simply, the Accelerant,
has proven to bring unpredictable and startling mutations to the organisms it comes into contact
with, one such case being the transformation of worms, indigineous to the moon, which came
into contact with the accelarant, developing monstrous and hostile properties.
When the crew of the Prometheus, led by Dr. Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway, discovered
the temple containing the urns of the accelerant, which, after being disturbed, leaked, and
consequently contaminated the nearby worms, it caused the rapid mutation of the worms'
DNA, resulting the creature classified as the HAMMERPEDE.
While still resembling LV-233's indigineous worms, the hammerpede grew to be much larger,
and snake-like, approximately 4-feet long, with a crest surrounding its head that could
be folded in and out around the creature's mouth.
The Hammerpede possesses incredible strength, with the ability able to break and crush the
bones of its victims, with the additional defense mechanism also seen the xenomorph:
containing acidic blood, and also regenerative properties.
Fifield and Millburn discovered this creature after finding themselves lost in the temple.
Millburn was fascinated by the creature, which attacked him, wrapping itself around his arm,
tightening worse with each movement of the two panicked scientists, and soon using its
great strength to break his arm completely.
In an attempt to free Millburn from the clutch of the creature, fifield cut off the Hammerpede's
head, resulting in its acid blood to spray onto Fifield, and displayed its rapid regenerative
abilities by growing a new head, and then entering Millburn's suit, into his mouth and
down his throat, slowly killing him.
The acid from the cut had burned its way through Fifield's helmet, seemingly effectively killing
him, that is, until he made contact with the accelerant himself.
With the Hammerpede's extremely agressive and dangerous nature in hindsight, many have
wondered why Millburn, the biologist of the group, didn't approach the mysterious creature
with more caution.
In fact, when first encountering it, he seems to be very friendly towards it and doesn't
perceive it to be any kind of threat, all while insisting that Fifield should trust
him, as he makes his approaches to creature.
Some insight into Millburn's attitude towards the creature may be found in a deleted scene
from the final film, in which Millburn, along with the group, originally discovers the worms
alive and thriving in soil.
Millburn is ecstatic at this discovery, noting "In all the systems we've come along we've
never encountered anything larger than bacteria...But this....This is life.
We found Life."
To which David replies, "Our first alien."
Millburn, though an accomplished enough biologist to be recruited for such an important mission,
simply may have been too overcome with the prospect of encountering a new scientific
discovery that he didn't take the appropriate cautions, and very much didn't consider the
consequences of investigating the unknown, not unlike the crew of the Prometheus as a
whole.
Do you think if the scene of Millburn first encountering the worms in the temple is explanation
enough of his actions later on, do you think he gave up on common sense in favor of studying
a new scientific find?
Do you think the scene should have been included, to offer a little more forshadowing and character
motivation?
Or did you think, regardless, he was acting foolish?
Comment below and let me know what you think, and what you'd do if you were in Millburn's
situation?
