LADY ALTAGRACIA
PREVIOUSLY
Would you be this love-struck doctor's girlfriend?
Yes, Adolfo. I would.
Leticia, is one of us Monica's father?
Yes... one of you is Monica's father.
Monica...
I am your father.
Please forgive me.
Forgive me for all I've done!
I don't know what to do!
This guy just said he's my father!
Monica...
Don't move.
I could've left, you know... but what's the point?
You would've found me eventually!
"You?"
Yes... you and Daniel Llamas.
How many other Monkeys are there, anyway?
Stay the hell away from me!
It's just Daniel and me now.
I mean it.
I'm not going to hurt you.
The only reason I didn't call the police
is because I know they're in your pocket just like Gabino.
Altagracia knows you're here.
I called her. She's on her way.
You called her? Why'd you do that?
You aren't like her, Monica.
You'd never hurt anyone.
Altagracia's going to kill me.
Is that what you want?
For your mother to kill me?
Are you going to let her kill me... your own father?
Shut up!
I don't care what the results say.
Lazaro's the only father I've ever had.
Look at him, Mom.
I never thought I'd see him like this.
I can't believe it.
Just seeing him makes me feel terrible.
Don't worry, sweetie.
You're safe here.
It's all in Saul's hands now.
Didn't Monica come with you guys?
No...
Please rise for the members of the court.
You may be seated.
Counsel. Mr. Braulio Padilla.
This hearing is to determine
whether you are innocent or guilty of the charges
of which you've been accused.
The truth may hurt, but it always comes to light.
I'd rather face it once and for all.
Put the knife down. There's no need...
No!
There is a need.
Oh, and I can defend myself.
I wanted to speak to you in private,
but with Altagracia on her way,
there's no point.
She will kill me.
No!
You're the killer here.
You hired Gabino to kill me!
It isn't just one crime
weighing on the accused's shoulders.
There are multiple!
Braulio Padilla is appearing before the court
for the murder of Jaime Aguirre,
the forced disappearance of Ximena Urdaneta,
the rape of Lydia Corona,
and the kidnapping of Valeria Puertas, Leticia Cabral,
Justino Lopez, and Diego Padilla.
As you can see, this man has claimed multiple victims.
Objection, Your Honor.
Prosecution has a personal interest
in all of these cases.
Yes, but not nearly as much as Braulio Padilla did.
He killed my father
because he stood in the way of his economic gain.
He killed Ximena because she found out he was responsible
and would've testified against him.
He raped Lydia to get his son Diego to leave her.
He then went on to kidnap Diego, Diego's mother,
her new love interest, and a family friend.
It's true, Counsel.
Braulio Padilla and I both have
a personal interest in this case...
but unlike me, he always resorts to violence...
and death.
I choose to turn to justice and the law.
Leticia, I thought you'd never arrive.
We need you to testify.
I know, but something happened to Rafael.
-What happened? -I'll tell you later.
Are you okay?
If Altagracia's on her way,
this may well be our last chance to speak.
I know this can't be easy, but please try to calm down.
We need to try and understand each other!
Put yourself in my shoes.
There's nothing to understand here, Rafael.
Monica, put the knife down. Put it down!
Are you okay?
Did he hurt you?
He showed me the results of a paternity test.
Is it true?
Could this man really be my father?
I've been working on this case
ever since the late Emiliano Cabral ran over Lydia Corona.
That's when I realized
that Braulio Padilla couldn't be trusted.
Objection!
You're speaking from your personal point of view
as if this were common gossip.
What kind of expert witness is she?
Is she a police officer or a street vendor?
Hey! Show some respect!
I thought you had a better sense of ethics, Counsel.
I'm sure a street vendor
could teach you a thing or two about respect.
Officer Karen Velarde is a renowned investigator
based out of Veracruz
who got her master's in criminology in Chicago,
in case you didn't know.
She currently handles a number of cases
here in Mexico City.
I'd like to make an important point.
I'm not just here as a police officer.
I'm also here as a witness.
I was present at the scene
the day Jaime Aguirre fell to his death.
The accused showed up out of nowhere!
There was no way he could've received
any prior communication regarding the accident.
My client thought Mrs. Altagracia was alone.
He merely showed up to check on her.
There's no evidence of that.
What we do know is, Braulio Padilla showed up
just minutes after the arrest of the prime suspect,
Altagracia Sandoval at the time.
Padilla's presence at the scene of the crime
led me to wonder,
so I had him investigated.
There was another witness to those events.
This witness was there
in the days leading up to Jaime Aguirre's death.
Then you'll see how the pieces fit together.
Did you reach a conclusion after your investigation
of Ximena Urdaneta's disappearance?
We have call logs that show that Braulio Padilla
was the last person Ximena Urdaneta called
before disappearing.
I tried to have Mr. Padilla's car searched,
but it was gone.
He'd sold it to a junkyard.
We refused to give up.
We searched every junkyard in the city
and indeed found parts of his car.
DNA was found on those parts. It matched Ximena's DNA.
Convincing evidence, yes... but we have no corpse.
Doesn't matter. We still have the DNA.
We also have other pieces of evidence he tried to hide.
He called Ximena the same day she died.
All that information can be found
in the folder I just gave you.
Officer Velarde arrested Mr. Padilla
as the prime suspect in Jaime Aguirre's murder.
We tried to have a hearing to review the evidence against him,
but it was refused by the order of a superior.
Not only was it refused,
but Braulio Padilla was released.
The worst part is,
he took advantage of his freedom to rape a defenseless woman.
Objection!
There's no evidence or proof of a rape having occurred.
The counsel for the defense is wrong.
There's plenty of evidence.
There are also witnesses of the accused's violent tendencies.
His arrest took place just as he'd taken his family hostage.
He threatened to kill them.
What kind of man points a loaded gun at his son
and pregnant ex-wife?
He's right here, folks.
A man like him.
A man like Braulio Padilla.
Answer me, Altagracia.
Is it true?
Does this mean I am his daughter?
Altagracia doesn't know for sure... but I do.
The proof is right here.
It's a 100% match. I'm your biological father.
Monica, please leave us.
Rafael and I have a score to settle.
Please, Monica. Do as Altagracia says.
Once Monica leaves, we all know what's going to happen.
Right, Altagracia?
Are you going to kill him?
Is that why you asked me to leave?
He said you killed those other men.
Aren't you ashamed of being such a coward?
You're just as cowardly now as you were that night.
Gabino said it. So did Daniel.
My dad told me, too... and Rafael just confirmed it.
I'm the product of that rape in Veracruz, aren't I?
You're despicable, Rafael.
You all are.
Don't look at him! Look at me, Altagracia!
I need to know the truth!
Very well.
I tried my best to spare you this...
Altagracia, you don't have to do this.
Stop hurting yourself.
I can talk to Monica.
No.
That's my job.
I ended up pregnant that night.
You weren't born of my relationship with Cesar,
whom I loved.
He was killed that night too,
and there was nothing I could do.
I couldn't prevent any of it.
We were just girls at the time.
It wasn't your fault, Altagracia.
You didn't do anything wrong.
We were excited for the carnival,
so we got dressed up...
We just wanted to have a good time.
I really love this place, Lazaro.
I found these herbs along the path.
They're great for remedies.
Especially headaches.
I'll make you some tea once we get home.
You'll have to drink it all yourself.
I see your finicky side is back.
It never left!
You're right, sweetie.
You're still your wonderful self.
You're finicky... but fun to be around.
And much to my surprise, romantic!
I loved the mariachi band you hired for the wedding.
I just love music.
Did you like it?
I loved it!
Pass me the speakers, will you?
I'm going to play you some music.
Oh, honey...
Were you pressured or otherwise bribed
to alter the results of Jaime Aguirre's autopsy?
Yes... Mr. Braulio Padilla paid me to alter the results
to make it look like an accident,
to eliminate any evidence connecting him.
Did you do it for the money?
No... I did it out of fear.
Mr. Braulio Padilla was Lady Altagracia's attorney.
He claimed to be carrying out her orders...
but once I spoke to Lady Altagracia,
I found out it wasn't true.
She never gave that order.
It's his word against my client's.
Yes, that's true.
In fact, I felt we needed more proof.
With all due respect, Counsel,
this isn't my first case.
That's why I'd like to call another witness to the stand.
One who has a lot to say about Jaime Aguirre's death.
I call Diego Padilla to the stand.
Be cool. You can do this.
Altagracia.
I know what I did was unforgivable...
but that was many years ago.
I was young and immature.
I didn't know what I was doing.
That's what all young men say when they rape their friends
and come out on the news asking forgiveness.
They claim they didn't know what they were doing.
They were young and "playing around!"
"Things just got out of hand."
Do you seriously think this is a game, Rafael?
Do you think this is at all forgivable?
Enough.
I don't want to talk about this anymore.
Monica has a right to know.
I said enough.
I need to know everything.
Can someone tell me the truth for once in my life?
Rafael and the rest of the Monkeys
didn't just rape Monica and kill her boyfriend Cesar.
They also killed our parents... your grandparents.
They tried to rape me... but Altagracia stopped them.
She sacrificed herself for me.
That's how she ended up getting raped.
You killed... my grandparents?
How can a human being do something like that?
How can someone like you possibly be my father?
Monica! Monica, where are you going?
The forensic technician was right.
Braulio bribed him to lie about the results
of your father's autopsy...
I mean, Mr. Jaime Aguirre.
How can you be so sure?
I overheard him talking on the phone.
Did you find any further evidence
on Jaime Aguirre's body?
What'd you do with it?
I sure hope so.
That's what I pay you for.
He mentioned having paid him
for altering the autopsy results.
Why didn't you speak out sooner?
I was afraid for my mother and me.
In the end, there was no real point in hiding it.
Braulio hurt us a great deal.
He didn't just hurt my family...
he hurt people who mean a lot to me.
Like who?
Like Lydia Corona.
She was my girlfriend, but Braulio didn't approve.
Objection!
Braulio said no man would go near a woman
who'd slept with his father.
That's why he drugged and raped her.
To separate us.
