20th Century Fox Apologizes For Purposely Spreading Fake News - Duration: 7:19.
20th Century Fox Apologizes For Purposely Spreading Fake News
In raising awareness for our films, we do our best to push the boundaries of traditional
marketing in order to creatively express our message to consumers. In this case, we got
it wrong.
Those words were taken from an email sent to the New York Times by film industry behemoth
20th Century Fox. It was an apology from the corporation for its part in creating a network
of fake news sites that published false stories as a marketing campaign for one of
its films.
We have reviewed our internal approval process and made appropriate changes, Dan
Berger, 20th Century Fox spokesman Dan Berger told the Times, to ensure that every part
of a campaign is elevated to and vetted by management in order to avoid this type of
mistake in the future.
On Monday, Fox had attempted to downplay the move. In a joint statement with production
partner Regency Enterprises, the corporation justified the campaign by pointing out that
the movie in question, A Cure for Wellness, is all about falsehood:
A Cure for Wellness is a movie about a fake cure that makes people sicker. As part of
this campaign, a fake wellness site, healthandwellness.co, was created and we partnered
with a fake news creator to publish fake news.
Unfortunately for Fox, few bought the line the movie giant was selling.
This absolutely crosses the line, Bonnie Patten, executive director of consumer watchdog
TruthInAdvertising.org, told the Times. Using a fake news site to lure consumers into buying
movie tickets is basically a form of deceptive marketing.
The five fake news sites created all had legitimate-sounding names: the Houston Leader, the Salt Lake City
Guardian, NY Morning Post, the Indianapolis Gazette, and the Sacramento Dispatch. The
sites published false stories about issues such as vaccines that vaguely tied in with
A Cure for Wellness but the stories contained real facts and data.
Variety, speaking with movie marketing veterans on the condition of anonymity, covered the
story on Tuesday. Calling the campaign monumentally stupid, one expert went on to question
Foxs ethics.
On a moral level, I give it an F, he said. On an execution level, I give it an F.
We dont need more fake news stories. We dont need more lies right now. There is
already plenty of that out on the web. Its already hard enough for people.
Another expert was similarly unimpressed with the thinking behind the campaign and pointed
out that it was rooted in an issue that is, at this moment, fatiguing society:
We now live in a time where things are really turbulent and movies really are about an escape
and that to me is the false, difficult note here. You are trying to relate your movie
to a current event which I get but its a current event that most people are
trying to turn away from.
And therein lies the hypocrisy.
20th Century Fox only apologized because it got caught. Had it not, the corporation surely
wouldve moved on to the next project, perhaps even utilizing this same marketing method
on other films.
Perhaps, that is, had the strategy not failed and backfired so profoundly.
Fox was eager and willing to co-opt the fake news hysteria so long as it brought in the
money. And had the film been a success it tanked, and the reviews werent much better
than the box office numbers Fox wouldve sat back silently as the corporate media continues
to beat real journalists down with the fake news hammer.
But the blatant hypocrisy on display isnt even the biggest issue.
The bigger problem, as was highlighted by the New York Times in a follow-up piece on
Thursday, is that the public simply isnt informed enough to tell the difference between
truth and falsehood.
Its a very kind of perverse use of a genre that is really counterproductive,
said Richard Edelman, owner of a public relations company. I dont think fake news is funny
in the least. If people want to have stunts, fine, but one of the great dangers it seems
to me at the moment is people cant differentiate between that which is real and that which
is a fake story.
In such an environment, where the people cant tell north from south or east from west, a
person might view 20th Century Foxs marketing ploy as an attempt to prey on the public.
One such person is Susan Credle, chief creative officer at the advertising agency FCB:
Fake news is not a cute or silly subject. When you start to tear down media and question
whats real and whats not real, our democracy is threatened. I think this is a hot enough
subject that most marketers would understand that taking advantage of a vulnerable public
is dangerous.
Essentially, whats she said is that on the whole, society is still too informationally
ignorant to discern reality. And that ignorance, as Credle stated, has left us vulnerable to
big hungry predators like 20th Century Fox.
Whether this societal obliviousness has come about due to an individuals willingness
to ignore hard truths or simply because he or she doesnt have the wherewithal for
discernment is, at the current stage, irrelevant. The fact remains that the American populace,
as this story about Fox clearly proves, has yet to reach a level of awareness in which
it can fend for itself in the Digital Age.
And this is precisely what independent, alternative news outlets such as Anti-Media and others
are trying to correct ignorance. The problem, of course, is that ignorance of the truth
is what the corporate media is all about.
Indeed, at its core, this is why the fake news weapon was invented to wrap true
alternative news stories up in so much false garbage that people would stop trusting legitimate
independent media sources.
The fight continues, and the New York Times the epitome of corporate media in print
was certain to name the enemy on Thursday in the closing of its article. The last quote
is from Rob Schwartz, chief executive of TBA\Chiat\Day New York, who says between the manufacturing
of fake news and the alternative news, Im tired of it.

The Untold Truth Of Kylie Jenner - Duration: 5:15.
Like most of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, Kylie Jenner needs no introduction.
The youngest Jenner's name continually dominates entertainment news feeds.
Whether it's speculation about her plastic surgery history or her latest makeup line
release selling out again, her name is always in our feeds.
However, in interview after interview, Jenner claims the person you see online is not the
real Kylie.
That begs the question: who is Kylie Jenner, beneath her viral veil?
Moderate modesty
It might be hard to believe, but Kylie Jenner doesn't always like flaunting her body.
Before you adjust this video's volume, yes, we are talking about the same girl who floods
her Instagram feed with bikini shots.
According to Jenner, she actually prefers being covered up in front of others in real
life.
While posing topless for Complex in 2016, she reportedly made any men leave the room
before proceeding.
She told magazine, "I'm comfortable with my body, but not that comfortable.
I'm not going to be walking around like that with a bunch of guys there."
And while she's not always comfortable with her bare derriere on display, there's one
realm where she prefers not to cover up: her face.
Sure, Kylie owns her own cosmetics line, but she claims that she prefers to keep it simple
when it comes to her own skin.
She told Wonderland Magazine,
"I feel like I didn't really appreciate that side of me; the very simple, no makeup Kylie."
She also revealed the only reason she wears makeup is because she thinks that's what her
fans like seeing on social media and said,
"I did feel a sense of Keeping Up With Myself — like, 'Ooh I need to come up with a new
hair color or a new cool makeup trick.'"
That said, she has played into the same fame game in more ways than one.
Under the knife — and the spotlight
Jenner first started making waves on the internet around 2014 when she debuted a dramatically
fuller pout.
At first, she claimed her bigger lips were an optical illusion, attained by "overlining"
her lips.
However, the public wasn't buying the story she sold, so she later admitted that she only
hid the truth of her lip injections because she was afraid of the public casting judgment.
"I'm just not ready to talk to reporters about my lips yet because everyone always picks
us apart."
Amid the media storm, Jenner saw an opportunity to do some classic Kardashian capitalizing
and cashed in — by releasing a hit lip line.
Finding an identity
Like many of us, Jenner's sense of style tends to shift with the wind.
Take one look through her Instagram feed and you'll see she never sticks to one look for
long, and there's a reason.
As she wrote on her website in 2015,
"I've just had this addiction to changing my hair.
It makes me feel like a new person."
But how does she go from a mint green bob one day to back-sweeping, jet black hair the
next without going bald in the process?
Wigs, of course.
And if you ask her, she's the reason wigs are so popular these days.
She told Marie Claire, "I started wigs, and now everyone is wearing wigs."
While it may seem like her ever changing tresses are a fashion statement, Jenner says she uses
the change-ups as a way to learn more about herself as a person.
She told Interview Magazine,
"What I think set everything off is when I cut my hair off when I was 16 and dyed it
blue.
After that, I just felt so free and wanted to experiment with my look.
[...] I just felt like I could be whoever I wanted to be, and I'm all about, like, experimenting."
Disconnecting
Between all the social media outlets Jenner is active on, you'd think there's not much
the starlet can hide.
However, some things in her widely publicized life are still sacred, according to her.
She told Time Magazine,
"People think they have a perfect idea of who you are from a four-second Snapchat video…
and fake blogs, stories, magazine covers.
In reality, that's not the case.
Nobody knows who I am except family and my close friends."
One of the reasons Jenner refuses to show her whole self online is because, as she explained
to Allure, it leaves "more room for people to say things about you."
And Jenner says she takes negative commentary online straight to heart.
She told Interview Magazine that reading mean things about herself online is her biggest
fear, saying:
"I wake up every morning with the worst anxiety.
I wake up every morning at, like, seven or eight because I think that there's a bad story
about me, and I have to check.
My worst fear is waking up and finding something bad about me on the internet."
"Guys… sh**.
I have some real drama."
As a result of her own experiences with celeb cyberbullying, she's been using her huge platform
to fight back lately — and not just for herself.
"I've been bullied my whole life — whether it's about my peers or comments on Instagram,
Twitter whatever."
She used those experiences to create a social media campaign called #IAmMoreThan as a vehicle
to support those who've also struggled with bullying.
The end game
Keeping Up With The Kardashians started filming in 2007 when Jenner was only nine, which means
she's spent more of her life in front of the camera than not.
It's safe to say she's never had what we'd call a 'normal' life, a fact that sometimes
gets her down.
For those of us who're happy to hit 50 likes on Instagram compared to Jenner's one million
— on a bad day! — it's easy to want to just shake her and tell her to appreciate
what she has.
But when you stop to think about it, her longing for normalcy makes sense.
She really can't do anything without it ending up on the internet within mere minutes.
She told Wonderland Magazine,
"It's not that I don't want to do it…
Yeah, actually I kind of just don't want to do it anymore.
Honestly.
I want to be a businesswoman and be behind-the-scenes.
Kylie Jenner needs to retire."
So, when should we be expecting her retirement party to launch?
It might be sooner than you think.
She told Interview Magazine that her ultimately goal is to swim out of the fishbowl of fame
sooner than later.
"When I'm, like, 30, I want to go off the map, have a family, and live in Malibu with
a farm, and just raise my own chickens."
Considering how glamorous her life has been thus far, chances are the farm life idea might
be a drastic departure from what she's used to.
But who knows?
Kylie Jenner's certainly been known to surprise us in the past.
"Do you know about credit?"
"Not really."
"Do you know how to iron?"
"What?"
"Kylie… no seriously?!"

The Real Reason The Kardashians Are Closing DASH Stores - Duration: 5:59.
It seems these days the Kardashians are working to rid themselves of DASH stores.
Following the closure of their Soho boutique late last year, a series of rumors have started
circulating about the fate of the franchise and their two remaining locations.
Are DASH stores closing because of dwindling profits, or is harassment to blame?
It turns out there's no single reason for the closings of certain DASH boutiques.
There are several possible explanations — most of which come by way of the Kardashians themselves.
So let's get to the bottom of what's going on with the Kardashians' disappearing DASH
stores.
Pricey positioning
If you visit the official DASH website, you'll note that the New York location is "permanently
closed."
According to the Page Six, the store was "quietly shuttered" in December 2016.
So what went wrong?
Allegedly, the high cost of renting the space might be to blame.
Back in 2014, The Real Deal revealed that the Soho space cost the Kardashians upwards
of $1.4 million per year.
We can only imagine the costs of maintaining the location continued to rise.
The high rent might not be a problem if DASH was a hugely successful franchise, but in
Khloé Kardashian's own words, that's not been the case.
It seems Kardashian clan just wasn't interested in salvaging this pricey location.
"We've had the f**ing store for four million years!
Literally!"
Outdated offerings
The season 13 premiere episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians saw Kourtney Kardashian
and family friend Jonathan Cheban visit the New York DASH location.
They were less than impressed with the state of the store, making its closing no shocker
in retrospect.
Kourtney even called big sister Kim to complain about the boutique's drab state.
"It's so 2009.
Like, I don't even have the words to explain."
"Shut up."
With the products at DASH apparently several years behind current trends — which is a
lifetime in the fast-paced fashion industry — it's no wonder the franchise was struggling
to keep up, making closures all but inevitable.
Branding bites
The DASH closings seem to signal a harsh truth for the Kardashian family: the public just
isn't as interested in their brand as it once was.
It's a scary reality, considering that even as recently as 2014 there were long lines
of excited customers.
Throngs of onlookers hoped to catch a glimpse of the famous Kardashians.
Things are different just a few short years later.
It wasn't too long ago that DASH openings were enough to warrant spin-off reality TV
shows.
But with TV show ratings at an all-time low, it seems the buying public just isn't interested.
Haters and vandals
The DASH stores are a sort of physical manifestation of all things Kardashian.
Unfortunately, many who happen to hate the Kardashians have expressed their feelings
by vandalizing their stores.
In 2009, at least one vandal targeted the Miami DASH location — and the store wasn't
even officially open to the public yet!
As Kourtney explained, "Lily, our store employee, who is with us in Miami for the opening, arrived
this morning and discovered that the store window had been vandalized with graffiti.
All of the graffiti on the wall was gang-related and there were carvings in the glass.
All in all, the damage is pretty bad, but they're painting over it now!"
She also shared that nothing was taken from the store, and that it likely wasn't a targeted
attack.
The same couldn't be said for the attempted arson at the Los Angeles DASH boutique.
According to TMZ, witnesses saw a man "[throw] a weighted, burning rag through the West Hollywood
storefront window."
The June 2016 incident didn't result in too much damage outside of a broken window because
the rag "burned itself out."
It reportedly was weighed down by a bottle of lighter fluid found inside the store.
TMZ later reported that vandals targeted the same Los Angeles DASH less than a year later.
The location even had to contend with theft, as an unidentified woman made off with $1,600
worth of merchandise.
It just seems like bad things keep happening to these stores.
Profitability peak
Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of the ongoing DASH dilemma is how much work the
Kardashians put into the franchise.
In a heartfelt confession, Khloé Kardashian shared that she and her sisters worked very
hard to keep DASH afloat, often struggling with a lack of funds.
She wrote,
"We started DASH in 2006 and really struggled for a long time to make it a successful business.
There were months we couldn't pay our bills, and the store didn't turn a profit for years
… but we were really determined and kept working at it [and] eventually, it paid off."
However, Kourtney Kardashian herself noted in Keeping Up With The Kardashians that the
stores are struggling to stay relevant and on-trend.
If DASH stores' best days are behind them, then what does that mean for the Kardashian
franchise as a whole?
Time to cut and run?
According to Kim, the ladies were given an offer they couldn't refuse for their DASH
stores' future.
"This major department store wants to buy Dash and put a Dash store in each one of their
huge department stores."
"that would be so cool."
While Kourtney was less enthused about the idea of walking away from the stores that
gave them their start, Kim and Khloe were fully onboard.
Sure, Dash has strong sentimental value, but they can't keep sinking cash into a flailing
business.
For now, it seems the Kardashian sisters have decided to hang on to certain locations while
saying goodbye to the SoHo store for good.
However, should things grow more dire for the business, it's entirely possible the sisters
may cave and agree to sell their remaining DASH stores.
In the meantime, the Kardashians really could continue to growth their virtual marketplace
and sell more of their merchandise online.
So, no matter what happens to rest of the DASH stash, those goodies will still be available
to Kardashian fans for a long time to come.
