Learn Comparatives with Game of Thrones (because why not?) - Duration: 4:37.

Hi guys, it's Marine. Welcome back

to My Little English Page. Today we are having a

look at comparatives and because I want to

all of my examples will be about Game of Thrones.

Why not, right?

Alright, so...there are three types of comparative

structures. You have higher degree

same degree and lower degree.

The structure of your comparative will depend on the type

of adjectives that you have.

You have long adjectives that are usually above two

syllable-long and short additives that

are usually one or two syllables.

Let's start with higher degree and with a long

adjective. If I have a long adjective

I am going to use 'more...than' and then place

the adjective in the middle.

'more interesting than'

For example: Jon Snow is

more handsome than his brothers.

Now, if I have a short adjective, I am NOT going to

use more. I am going to add -er at the

end of the adjective.

For example, 'short' would become 'shorter'.

' than' of course I keep 'than'.

What if your adjectives ends in -y?

hmm...What do you do? You remove the -y and

you add -ier. The same if your

adjectives ends in a sandwich of

consonant-vowel-consonant, if that's the

case, you must double the last consonant.

For example, 'big' become 'bigger'.

B-I...J...G-G-E-R

G and J, always the same!

Otherwise, the sound would be 'biger'.

And you want to say 'bigger' so you have to

double that last consonant.

Okay, let's have a look at same degree.

We usually use one specific structure which

is 'as-addictive-as'.

For example: 'Arya's character is

as interesting as Tyrion's.

And we use the same structure for long

and short addictives, no adjective

changes. It stays the same and then we

And then we have the lower degree.

The lower degree is going to be formed with 'less-adjective-than'.

Let's start with a long adjective

Littlefinger is less attractive than Gendry.

And I use the exact same

structure with a short adjective.

I don't change the adjective.

For example: The Wildlings are less scary than the White Walkers.

Now, it's also very common to you the

same degree structure 'as-adjective-as'

to form another type of comparative.

If i add a negative to the

structure 'as-adjectives-as' it's not the

same degree anymore. You're not saying

that they are on the same level. There is

now a difference. That way I could say

Jaime Lannister is not as evil as his sister.

And that is basically the same as

Jaime Lannister is less evil than his sister.
