How to improve the user experience (UX) on your homepage
Let's talk about the importance of making
a good impression on customers,
and how you can successfully
improve your online store's user experience.
We'll start with the home page,
but it's important to keep in mind that
your users won't always start their visit from there.
The same features must also be present on all of your site's pages.
HOW TO ENSURE USERS HAVE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION OF YOUR STORE
Making a good first impression
on your store's visitors
is both crucial and challenging.
You must convince them as quickly as possible that your product
is something that they need,
thus converting them into paying customers.
For them, your web page must:
1 - Display a professional and attractive design
2 - Offer a seamless and simplified user experience
3 - Appear to be credible and trustworthy
All in just a few short seconds
beneath a "close" button
that users won't hesitate to click.
That said,
here are five user experience tips to improve your home page
and engage and convert visitors:
NUMBER ONE - THE SLIDER - Your first opportunity to convert users
The first thing users see on your store's home screen
is the slider on your homepage.
Keep in mind that a good user experience should be condensed.
Processes should be simplified
and should include an emotional component.
This first part of your homepage
should briefly describe
the product or service you offer,
while also driving home your brand image.
Gain the full attention of your future customers
using an enticing background image
or a full screen video
featuring your product.
Don't forget to offer more content to your users
as they continue to scroll down the page!
Be sure to author a title or subtitle that presents your product
as well as your brand universe.
Remember: keep things concise,
mention the benefits for your user,
and use tone and vocabulary in line with your web personality.
Unless you sell just one product,
it's best if your slider also allows users to take a peek
at other parts of your online store.
For example,
you can display a selection of top products,
product packs or limited time offers.
It's also the perfect place to place your first call to action,
NUMBER TWO - CALL TO ACTION - Show your customers where to go. Step by step.
Your first call to action, that is to say
your first instruction for customers,
is by nature your slider.
It's where future customers will see products that interest them most
once they have seen the rest of your catalog.
The best invitation to discover their dream product
is a button that lets them get right to the page.
A button is much more visible than a link.
Also, for it to be visually recognized as a button,
it must respect a maximum size.
Think hard about what text content you want users to see.
Include two or three words at most.
It is very important
that the button have at least one action verb.
Select a color scheme for your buttons
that will make them pop out on your page.
Create a few variants of your button design
making sure to be consistent
across your entire store.
And remember: Give buttons some space!
A little white space around buttons
makes them much easier to find.
NUMBER THREE - DIFFERENTIATING YOURSELF - Your content should tell a story: Your story.
While users are checking out the rest of your home page,
they will come across different entry points.
Direct access to some product pages:
such as your best sellers,
a selection of products, or categories from your catalog.
But what is the best way to get your user's attention
and set yourself apart from the competition?
Include an area on your home page where you explain just what makes you different,
a sort of "about us" if you will.
Try talking about the benefits for your user and when possible:
talk about the exceptional quality or where your products come from,
your manufacturing methods,
or the origin of your ingredients or raw materials.
For example: 100% handmade in Spain.
Analyze your processes and your product
to find the one detail that makes your brand unique,
turning casual browsers into a captivated audience.
NUMBER FOUR - TRUST AND CREDIBILITY - Lay the groundwork for a solid customer relation.
A professional design and smooth experience
are the first things users will see,
sometimes inconsistently...
You're hoping they'll entrust
your store with their money.
Try logically organizing the structure of
your sections for users.
Crime: Logic. For. Your. Users.
It's a good idea to ask them for their opinion
so you end up with attractive page architecture.
And most importantly:
Don't overload them with information.
Focus on emphasizing just one element per block
to make it easier for users to choose.
When you must show multiple elements in a section,
try to use a card-like design
for which each card includes just one main action.
NUMBER 5 - MAKE THINGS FUN - Make browsing your site into a game by including micro-interactions.
Don't know what micro-interactions are?
They're animated elements on your interface
that respond to certain user actions.
The goal of these animations
is to give users information as well as a sense of control.
This allows actions be confirmed
or status notifications to show up in real time,
with demonstrative visual effects or sound effects.
And remember: Use effects and animations with moderation,
and only in context.
