Hey, hey! This is Conor, the Language Tsar, so
today I'm speaking to you from Bucharest in
Romania in Southern Eastern Europe, been a
beautiful day here, it's about 22 degrees
in March and behind me right there is
the Palace of the Parliament, the biggest
administrative buildings in the world. Today I'm
gonna make a video dedicated to my
dad actually because as lot of you who follow
this channel know, I am a big believer
in staying in apartments as opposed to
hotels when I travel. I think you get a
lot more of a local experience when you
do that and also it tends to be better value
for money on top of that who doesn't
like that. My father had stayed with me a
few times and then he went and he did it on his own
and he organized a trip with his friends.
I think they went to Spain, just a trip
probably to watch something with
motorsport. My dad is a big aficionado of
motorsport and the whole thing turned
into a complete catastrophe so I told my
dad, I promised him I will make a video
for people like you, who know about
Airbnb or maybe stayed with it before
but go and do it for the first time so
that you can avoid some easy pitfalls to
fall into if you're not really that au fait
with ... with the website, so this video
is dedicated to my dad! So if you've never
used Airbnb before, you're probably
thinking well what is Airbnb?
They created this portmanteau from the
word 'air' for like air mattress and
'bnb' like 'bad in breakfast'
and they can squish them together. Maybe it's just
a marketplace where people who have
accommodations that they would like to
rent out to travelers offer the
apartments online to those who are
looking for a place, so it's just a
marketplace. So if Airbnb does not own
any of these properties they're just
providing the platform which is the
website on which you can find the
accommodation that suits you based on
the description, the photos, the price, the
conditions, so it's important to take
that all into account and not imagine
that Airbnb are actually vetting and
grading the different accommodation and
that the price is corresponding or that
has a minimum quality attached in terms
of how clean it is etc. Airbnb
have some really crazy places like
fantastical places on their website like
you can stay in a tree house.
You can even see staying in a ski lift in
Courchevel which is in the French Alps
if that's what you really want to do
that look look cool. It's not just your
common standard apartment that you might
find in the city, you can also do staying
in really wacky places like that and
really unusual accommodation. So here in
my five steps that you should follow if
you're going to rent an air baby and
you're unfamiliar with the site in
particular. So the first thing is look at
the photos please! Photos are vital, right?
So if you can see, you know, there's
something like missed there. I don't really like
the look of the bathroom, maybe there
aren't very many photos, that's immediately
the red flag for me, it's like where is more
photos, they don't wanna to show me the bedroom,
don't wanna to show me the kitchen, what's in
there, so that's one thing if there are
very few photos then already I would
start to be thinking ee... I'm probably
not going to take this this property.
The second thing you should do is to read
their reviews because, peer review is
essential. Peer reviewing is when
other people I review a property. You can
see what the people've written, what they said.
If the Internet didn't work and three
people say that five people complain
about it, you know, that it's really dirty.
Other people're writing, and they are
writing about complaints or the same
really good things that really matter to
me, like if you're the person, type
of person, who goes to bed, let's say, at ten pm,
and you wanna get up at the crack of dawn at
five to go hiking or sightseeing and
stuff like that, then if there are one or
two or three or multiple people
complained about the noise and they
couldn't sleep, you know, after 10pm
that's definitely not going to be a
place that you should consider for
yourself. Now if you're the kind of
person who goes for the weekend or the
week and you want to go clubbing and
you're not planning to be sleeping
between 10 and 6 am you're actually
one of those, who are actually going to
be making all the noise then you're not
going to be bothered, but I complained at
all, because it does not apply to you
that's really important to take into
consideration. The third thing you need to
pay attention to when you're booking in
Airbnb are the cancellation terms, like if
you know for certain that you're going
to go there because of the huge event
and you go there every year and it's, you
know, 99 percent I mean you'll need to
worry so much, but if you're a little bit
I don't know, you know, I can go Monday, I can
go Wednesday, then you really should
check those cansellations, because they
tend to be, in my experience, stricter
than staying at a hotel for examples. So you really
need to be careful of that, you don't book
somewhere in that ah, you know, they take
all your money for the entire seven days
if you don't show up, so be very careful
of that. Typically people take in either
too but some really are like the entire
trip and so you better be certain that
you're going to stay there. So the fourth
thing that you need to look out for when
booking on Airbnb is the location. Look
at that map carefully. I'm not just look
at the map in relation to what you see
on the map. Do a little bit of research
about the location you're visiting
because maybe the apartment looks really
central but actually it's in a really
bad neighborhood or maybe there's a
problem getting there by transport, so
you gonna look all of that kind of stuff
up and be sure that it's you know in the
kind of area that you want to stay in
for that price. I have a little until to
tell this point, so recently I went with
my good friend from California, we went
to Brazil and we went after carnival to
Trancoso, which is the magical resort in
the South of the state of Bahia, which is
really a chic and quite expensive, so my
friend told me 'hey I've got an apartment
first there'. Everything seems to be really
expensive in Trancoso, but this one is
you know, I don't know maybe like half
the price and I looked at the map on it
and thought 'Mm, interesting'. It's half of price,
very well since a little bit further
out, it's not that much, but it's a little
bit, I started thinking what is in this
particular area that would cause, you
know, the price to drop by half. When we
arrived in Trancoso it turned out that
that apartment was right in the middle
of a slum, in a favela, it had a terrible
reputation for violent crime, theft,
murder, and I'm a little bit skeptical we
would have even reached the
accommodation in one piece at least
whatever belongings had we taken and
that's why was half the price. If
something is too good to be true, a lot
of time it, it is and there's really a
problem with it. And the fifth and final
tip I'll give you if you're using Airbnb
is look for any hidden costs.
Sometimes I've seen that people wanna
then charge you money when you arrive
and so, if it's a late
check-in or check-out. They have hit, you
know, extra additional cost. I mean this
were there written but they're not so
obvious, so I wouldn't call them hidden
costs necessarily, but there are some you
know maybe extra things. A little bonus tip
is a lot of time you're gonna see
instant book which means you can just go
ahead and book it that accommodation
they will give it to you or you don't
see include book which means it's better
to actually write them a message, right?
What I've just found out is that if you
go and book and say' hey I wanna book
that accomodation', you gonna wait a day to
get your answer. 23 hours later you're
gonna find that apartment wasn't
available, so what I like to do is I like
to send a few messages around especially
if it's not a really late booking, find
out, you know, what's available before you
make the main decisions because what might
look like available in sight is actually
not there. Of course if it has instant
booking go ahead a book it, and if you
have a problem definitely write to them
and immediately my experience custom
service overall has been positive, they
have tried to resolve things and I
haven't give me a little bit of extra
credit towards my next booking to
apologize for the inconvenience. So if
you found this video useful or if you
know someone who you know is thinking
about using Airbnb, might use it in the
future, isn't okay with it then
definitely forward to them this video,
give it a big thumbs up as wel l if you
liked it. You should consider clicking on
the link below down in the description. I
have my own link there you guys will get
a little bit of starter credit, things
change a little bit but somewhere
between twenty and thirty dollars and it
also helps me when I'm traveling because
it's actually affiliate link and you
will also help me if you go and book
somewhere in Airbnb in the future
because then I'll get a little bit of
credit for my trouble so we're both
helping each other, so it's a win for
everybody.
