Arduino Rotary Encoder Menu Tutorial with a Nokia 5110 LCD display. - Duration: 8:21.
Dear friends welcome to another video!
Today we are going to use an Arduino and a rotary encoder to build a simple menu on a
Nokia 5110 LCD display. Let's get started!
Hello guys, I am Nick and welcome to educ8s.tv a channel that is all about DIY electronics
projects with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP8266 and other popular boards.
Subscribe to the channel now if you don't want to miss any future videos.
In this video we are going learn how to build our own menu for the popular Nokia 5110 LCD
display, in order to make our projects more user friendly and more capable.
We have built a similar project in the past, but a lot of the viewers of the channel suggested
that I should prepare another video on this subject.
This time we are going to use a rotary encoder instead of push buttons.
Also, the menu we are going to build today has more items to choose from.
Let's watch it in action.
This is the project we are going to build.
In the display a simple menu appears, and with the help of the rotary encoder I can
navigate up, or down and select a menu item by pressing the rotary encoder button.
The menu has 6 items, and we can scroll down or up the menu and the items on the display
will change accordingly.
Let's select the first option.
As you can see a new a UI screen is displayed and by rotating the rotary encoder shaft we
can change the contrast of the display.
If we press the rotary encoder button again, we go back to the main UI screen.
The second menu item offers a similar functionality it modifies the volume variable.
If we now select the third menu item and press the button we can change the language value.
I have not implemented this functionality, this is just a demo project.
A similar functionality is attached to the 4th menu item which is called difficulty.
We can disable the backlight of the display if we wish, by selecting the 5th menu item,
or we can reset everything to its default value with the 6th menu item.
Of course you can modify it to build your own more complex menus if you wish.
Let's now see how to build this project.
The parts needed in order to build this project are the following:
• An Arduino Uno or any other compatible board
• A Nokia 5110 LCD display • A rotary encoder
• A small breadboard • Some wires
The cost of the project is very low, it is less than $10.
You can find links for all the parts I use in the description of the video below.
Let's now connect all the parts together.
Before building this project, if you haven't used a rotary encoder in the past, I encourage
you to watch the tutorial I have prepared about rotary encoders.
It will help you understand how rotary encoders work and you are going to gain some experience
with them.
Click on the card here if you want to watch it now.
I have placed the display on a small breadboard like this.
Let's first connect the display.
The first pin of the display which is Reset goes to digital pin 3 of the Arduino Uno,
the second pin goes to digital pin 4, the third pin goes to digital pin 5, the fourth
pin to digital pin 11 and the fifth pin to digital pin 13.
The next pin is Vcc.
We connect Vcc to the positive rail of the breadboard, and the breadboard positive rail
to the 3.3V output of the Arduino.
The next pin is Backlight for the display.
Since we want to control it via the software we connect it to digital pin 7.
The last pin is GND.
We connect GND to the negative rail of the breadboard, and the negative rail of the breadboard
to Arduino GND.
Now all we have to do is to connect the rotary encoder.
The first pin is GND and we connect it to negative rail of the breadboard.
The next pin is Vcc and we connect it to the positive rail of the breadboard.
The next pin is SW and we connect it to Analog Pin 2.
The next pin is named DT and we connect it to Analog Pin 1.
Lastly the pin CLK is connected to Analog Pin 0.
You can find the schematic diagram of this project in the description of the video below.
Now we are ready to power up the project.
As you can see, the project is working fine, and the menu is working as expected!
Great, let's now see the software of the project.
The code of the project is complex but I will do my best to explain it.
You will get a basic understanding of how the code works but if you want to fully understand
it you have to make your own menu and see exactly how it works.
Let's start.
In this project we use 4 libraries.
We use two libraries for the display, and two for the rotary encoder.
You can find links for all the libraries in the description of the video below.
At first we are going to take a look at the drawMenu function.
This function is responsible for drawing the Menu on the display.
This function is called every few milliseconds, so if there is a change on the menu this function
is responsible for updating the menu on the screen.
There are also 3 very important global variables, the variable page, the variable menuitem and
variable frame.
The variable page remembers which UI screen is displayed on the screen.
So, if the page variable is 1, we are in the main UI screen, and if the variable is 2 we
are in the secondary UI screen where we set the value on a variable.
The menu item remembers the selected menu item.
So, if its value is 1, the first menu item is selected, so the drawMenu function must
draw this menu item as black with white letters.
If the menu item is 2 the second menu item is selected and so on.
The frame variable, remembers which part of the menu is displayed on the screen.
Since the menu we have created contains 6 items and we can only display 3 of them at
a time, we need to know which items are displayed on the screen.
The frame variable, tells us exactly this.
If the frame variable has the value of 1, we display the first three menu items, if
it is 2, we display items 2,3,4 and so on.
I tried to make the code as easy as possible to modify so I have created some global variables
that hold the names for the menu items.
This way, you can create your own menus easily without searching in code.
At first we initialize all the global variables that are needed in the code.
Next we initialize the display.
In the loop function, at first we call the drawMenu function to draw the menu on the
screen.
Then we read the value from the Rotary encoder and check if the button is pressed.
For example, if we are on the main UI screen and the first menu item is selected, if the
value from the rotary encoder has increased, the menuitem variable increases and in the
next loop the drawMenu function will draw the second menu item as selected.
If we now press the button of the rotary encoder we navigate to the second page, where we set
the value of the variable.
Again using the rotary encoder we can increase or decrease the value of the variable.
If we press the button we navigate back to the main menu page, and page variable decreases.
That's the basic idea behind this menu.
We follow the same procedure for all the menu items and pages.
The code is complex, it is over 400 lines long.
It seems complicated but if you try it yourself you are going to understand it more easily
and you will be able to change it, expand it and use it in your own projects.
As always you can find the code of the project in a link in the description below.
That's it, now we know how to build complex menus either with or rotary encoder or with
buttons.
I personally prefer buttons for my menus, but in some cases a rotary encoder is easier
to use.
I would like to hear your opinion about this.
Do you prefer buttons or a rotary encoder to navigate through your menus?

I bought an Orchid with white flowers - Duration: 5:31.
Hi I'm George :) I bought an orchid with white flowers
but now I'm out, I wanted to film in the house
and almost to start shooting
and turn off electricity
raining outside, but no rain with storm or something
I have no idea why they turned out the lights
and it is very dark in the house
but I'll shoot orchid blooming as it is the dark
believe me, and we go in the house to see
I paid around $ 7, that is around 150 MDL
and is my second orchids, let's show you how it looks
orchid here about which I was speaking
flowers are white and a little yellow
and has flower buds if seen
It is a little dark but that's
I have not removed the foil, I bought it with about 3 days ago
and I sailed well plant
I kept it away from my plants
When you buy a new plant, always you have to do so
keep it aside in a separate room
and surf on it
and check if no pests
and I sailed on this orchid
and I did not notice pests
so we look like leaves are very healthy
and the roots as I like
I removed the foil
So came the next day, and I decided to make a second double
because I have not had time to edit double yesterday
and out was more enlightened, and have already electric light
and look what flowers are beautiful
have focused very well, they are white
I chose the white color and little yellow
and red
and it looks very nice
as there were sold more orchids
and I chose this color because I liked the best
I liked the leaves have a nice color
green, so somehow shine
and here we see flower buds
are two buds, can grow another one
and something like this show has only a stem with flowers
as I said it's great, I love
Now we're down video camera to show leaves
look looks like leaves, there are approximately about 10 leaves
leaves are large and small
it's okay, I like
such as leaves and what color and look such as
only do not know what this
but it does not matter
cracks or something
but it's OK
Room temperature 15C - 25C
to me now are 17C is good, I'm lucky
partial sunny
watered once in 7 days
no water in pot
don't eat
we will not eat :))
and what we have next?
look how it looks roots, so I like
What is that?
I will out I do not know What doing here
good, and I chose some healthy roots
So, here's what it looks like
we look Well Well
as shown by all roots
an aerial roots grow down
behold, there grows
They are very thick and beautiful
so this leaf has something, but it does not matter
will grow beautiful leaves
here was a flower stem but something happened
so
does not matter, that's
here I want to show that I saw at root
something blue
I think this is due to fertilizer
Here, you can see there is blue root somehow
I think from fertilizer
but I `m not sure
if we look at the bottom of the pot
does not have roots coming out of pot
barely begins to get out here
well, it's okay
and that's all I wanted to show my new orchid
very beautiful, I love
I hope to keep in my house
and we will see further
So thank you for watching, I wish you a good day
I hope that orchid further feel good
and we'll see you next time

Sh*t is coming + 10 000 subs Q&A announcement | Andriy Vasylenko - Duration: 2:50.
First of all, thank you all for support, good words, ideas and relevant critics.
I didn't expect that my last videos would reach so many people so quick.
Greetings, our new comrades who stand for metal \m/
If you are here because of my old stuff - I still gonna make bass covers
still working on Total Cliff, still writing songs. Wish I had more time and energy.
The more people we reach, the more haters, trolls, and other lazy assholes come here.
It's just inevitable statistics, whatever you do. So, how I deal with that?
I consider the channel as our club and my home.
And I never allow somebody just come and shit in here.
Let's built it as a community of tolerate and smart people who know how to criticize each other.
A comment sounding like 'Good for you, but you're asshole' is not advice.
I don't have time to think what the person meant. And I don't like to argue, so I just ban and keep going.
Thankfully, most of my viewers give the critics properly, so I often accept it and everybody's happy.
And I so appreciate that you understand that I learn English, and videos are my only practice in this.
Especially considering that a lot of people speak other languages, Spanish and Portuguese in particular.
And the fact that YOU understand what I say is very important to me.
By the way, if you are a native English speaker, please point at my mistakes.
Help me to break the bubble in which I study the language.
And now about Q&A. 10 000 seemed unattainable 3 years ago when I started.
And now we're almost there! Ask me in comments below, and I'll pick 10 or 15 questions to answer.
Special thanks to my Patrons who make the channel sustainable and improving.
So, I can apply my skills properly, helping and inspiring people
and not to work at a supermarket for a pocket money to support my family.
Thank you guys. See you in new videos, or on my website, or Facebook.

Can This Phone Beat the Galaxy S8? - Duration: 6:49.
- Hey guys, this is Austin.
The new Galaxy S8 is promising
to shake up the smartphone game,
but LG might just have something to say about that.
Big shout out to LG for hooking us up
with the G6 a little bit early.
Now they are not sponsoring this video,
but I am curious to see how it stacks up.
Take a look inside the box and we have the G6.
Now while the Galaxy S8 is getting all the hype
for having essentially no bezel on a giant screen,
if you take a look at this, it's not actually that far off.
There's not a lot in the box,
we have the power adapter as well as as a USB-C cable.
Now this is in comparison to the Galaxy S8,
which comes with a really nice pair
of AKG headphones in the box.
When you look at the G6 next to
the Galaxy S8 Plus and the iPhone 7 Plus
you'll see that, well, this just sticks out.
The idea of having much thinner bezels
just gives you more screen in the same footprint.
While the G6 does have thin bezels,
it can't quite touch the S8.
This is a little bit more of a blocky phone,
so it's got a completely flat display compared to the S8
which has curved glass both front and back.
If you look closely, you'll see the G6
has a slightly more pronounced chin,
but generally speaking they do look fairly similar.
They both do have those slight curves
around the edges of the display,
and with so much screen with so little bezel
it does feel like a new generation of smartphone.
This isn't a perfect comparison.
The Galaxy S8 Plus is a little bit bigger than the G6,
but if you have a standard S8
it's going to be about the same size,
but what really separates both of these phones
from other devices is the aspect ratio.
So the G6 has a 2880 by 1440p IPS display.
Where the Galaxy S8, an S8 Plus bumps it up to 2960 by 1440.
What that means is that these are much taller screens
than what you're probably used to.
So if you open a normal app such as YouTube,
all this means is that you get a little bit
of extra vertical real estate,
but if you're watching something like video,
what that means is that you end up getting
black bars on either side of the video.
Now this is not exactly a huge deal,
I think that the extra screen real estate
in 95% of your apps is worth the trade off,
but it does mean that video's not
going to fully eat up the screen.
It should be no surprise that these are
two of the best smartphone displays out right now.
So the LG G6 has a couple cool features,
like it supports HDR10 as well as Dolby Vision,
so as HDR video becomes more and more popular,
the G6 is ready to handle it.
The S8 might not be a huge upgrade over the last generation,
but it is still a terrific looking AMOLED display.
So the contrast is absolutely on point,
it's nicely saturated and it gets really bright.
So out of the box, it actually runs
at a slightly lower 2220 by 1080 resolution.
Now there's nothing necessarily wrong with that,
it's still reasonably sharp and they're doing it,
I presume to save battery,
but when you buy a super high resolution
great looking display on a smartphone,
you kind of wanna, you know, run it at full resolution.
As flagships in 2017, build quality
isn't an issue with either phone,
but I do prefer the design of the Galaxy S8.
What's cool here is that because it has glass
on front and back and they both have the same taper,
it's a very seamless sort of design,
especially with the very thin frame that goes
around the edges, it really does feel great in the hand.
Now, it's not perfect, it would be nice
if this had better speakers instead
of one small one on the bottom,
and the fingerprint sensor on back is not quite ideal,
but taken as a whole this is an absolutely killer design.
I love it.
In comparison, the G6 just feels
a little bit more old school,
so with the flat sort of edges around the side,
it just doesn't feel as thin in the hand
and it's not exactly a bad phone, don't get me wrong,
it does have nice glass on front and back,
and if I had not touched the S8, this would be great,
but in comparison it just doesn't quite hold up.
But there are some things I do prefer on the G6
and probably the biggest one is the power button.
Not only does it double as the fingerprint sensor
which puts it in a much better location
than on the Galaxy S8, but it just feels like a clever
use of space sort of combining your fingerprint sensor
which already has to be there anyway
with a physical button to turn on and off the phone.
One area where they are the same
is with the IP68 water resistance.
So no, you shouldn't go swimming with either of these phones
but I feel like for a flagship in 2017
there is no reason not to have
at least some sort of water resistance.
It's just nice to know that when you spend this much money
on a phone the little bit of splash is not going to kill it.
Both phones are also running Android 7.0
Nougat with their own skins.
Now I prefer what Samsung has done
a little bit more this time around,
it's a little bit of a cleaner interface
and while they have included things like Bixby,
which I'm just not going to use
because Google Assistant exists,
but for the most part, both phones are completely fine,
you can live with either skin
and of course, you know, launches are a thing.
One of the biggest differences
between the two phones are specs.
So while the LG G6 has the older Snapdragon 821,
the Galaxy S8 has the brand new Snapdragon 835.
So I'm curious to see how they perform.
(groovy music)
That's actually pretty close.
So one of the big advantages of the S8 is that it's an
octa-core processor instead of quad-core on the G6,
which means that it definitely
does win on the multithread side
and on the single thread side,
it's actually not a huge difference.
However, because it's the 835 and
it's based on a newer process,
in theory that should help battery life.
Cameras might actually be the biggest
difference between these two phones.
So while the Galaxy S8 has the same 12 megapixel camera
from the S7 with just a few software tweaks.
The LG G6 has dual 13 megapixel cameras.
So what's cool about this dual camera on the G6
is that while it was available on the G5,
there was a huge difference in quality
between the two cameras.
Whereas on the G6, yes the standard camera
is a little bit higher quality, it looks a little bit nicer,
but it's not a huge difference.
And a big part of that is that both cameras
have the same 13 megapixel sensor behind them.
Now when we jump over to the Galaxy S8
it is not a bad camera by any means.
You can get some really killer shots.
The big downside though, is that it just
isn't a huge upgrade over the S7.
So Samsung is doing some additional image processing,
so essentially, just like the Pixel,
they're constantly taking stills and using the best bits
of each one to combine into a final image
and it does look really nice.
I do think the S8's a little bit more of a natural image,
it's not quite so sharp and that bigger sensor
actually does give you just a little bit of depth of field.
One of the big advantages of the Galaxy S8, though
is that new 8 megapixel front-facing camera.
Not only is this fairly wide,
but it also looks really nice, especially in video.
And this is what the G6 front-facing camera looks like.
It's not bad, but it does not even come close to the S8.
Even for stills, the G6, it's fine,
but I think the S8 does win out.
So this is what video looks like on the LG G6.
So it looks a little bit oversharp to my eye,
but it is still shooting in 4k.
However, one of the cool things is
you can seamlessly switch between the two cameras.
So this is what the wide angle looks like,
and then we can jump right back into the standard.
On the other hand, the Galaxy S8
video looks pretty impressive.
So not only is saturation nice,
but because it does have the bigger sensor
we do get some depth of field here.
Also the stabilization seems to be reasonable,
you can see it maybe trips up
just a little bit when you make a big move,
but it is hard to argue with this camera.
I mean sure, it's not a huge upgrade over the S7
and the G6 camera, especially having the wide angle,
both cameras look great, especially for stills.
When you look at the whole package,
I think it's gonna be really tough to beat this S8.
And that kind of tells the story, I'm afraid.
The G6 is a good phone and if the S8 didn't exist,
it would be a great phone.
But the problem is, this just does so many things
so well that it's going to be hard to argue with.
So what do you guys think about the G6 and the Galaxy S8?
Let me know in the comments below
and I will catch you in the next one.

Dark Times Within The Trump White House - Duration: 8:33.
So, Farron, of course there's more to this week than just the Gorsuch hearings, and the
Comey hearings, and the Republicans' attempt to take away healthcare from millions and
millions of Americans.
There's still actually an attempt at the Administration, at the White House, to I guess arguably run
a government, but it looks pretty strange.
What's interesting is that nobody in the White House right now, not Trump, not the aides
or advisors or the staffers, nobody trusts one another right now in that Donald Trump
White House.
There was an interesting story that came out from Politico about a week and a half ago
where they talked about the fact that you have staffers that are now afraid to even
bring in their cell phones to work, because they don't want people going though them.
They don't want, I guess, Sean Spicer looking at them.
This was in response ... They wanted to find out who the leakers were.
Well then this past week, Washington Post comes out and says that the White House has
decided to install aides, senior Trump aides, at all of the Cabinet levels of government
to act as his, quote, "eyes and ears" within those organizations.
What they're trying to do ... I don't think this is so much about catching leakers at
this point.
This is about making sure that everybody is loyal to Donald Trump, that they're not saying
anything bad about him in the hallway, that they're completely loyal.
This goes along with the fact that ... Again, another story from a couple of weeks ago,
they were going through Facebook feeds of potential employees, people who had applied
for jobs in the White House, making sure that they had never written anything unpleasant
or unflattering about Donald Trump ... You know?
In case they were somebody from the Cruz campaign or the Jeb Bush campaign, they were weeding
those people out if they ever said anything bad about Trump.
This is a man so narcissistic that he's crippling the government from the inside because they
can't find enough people willing to work for him who've never criticized him.
That's one of the biggest issues that we have from inside the actual government, other than
obviously being investigated for everything under the sun, is the fact that nobody wants
to work with this guy.
Nobody trusts themselves, or trusts him enough, to work for him.
He doesn't trust them.
Look.
The best word to describe this is not something I can say on the air without being bleeped
out, but I think we understand exactly what kind of situation we're dealing with inside
of Trump's White House right now.
It is an absolute disaster at every single level.
Yeah.
I think you can say "crap show."
The thing to be clear on here is ... And there's a couple of stories that are involved in this,
just this one.
The Trump Administration .... When a new Administration comes in there's about 4,000 people that need
to be staffed up, and hundreds upon hundreds of those are ones that need some type of perfunctory
Senate approval.
They need to be nominated, and so on.
Most of the top ... Or I should say the Cabinet positions are filled, but in these agencies
there is no middle management.
There's no upper management that has been filled here and some have speculated that
this is not just incompetence, but it's also there's some design to it.
I think it's probably a combination of both incompetence and design because largely speaking
the White House, the Trump Administration, doesn't want functioning government agencies.
Steve Bannon spoke in front of CPAC, I don't know, a couple of weeks ago, and said explicitly
that 'Our agenda is to deconstruct the administrative state.'
What you have is sort of like top management in these agencies, and then just people who
are working, just civil servants who come in every day, but no way to communicate between
those.
Then these people ... Some of them have been referred to as "beachhead appointments."
ProPublica did a great piece on these people who are put in, ostensibly, for temporary
positions.
We don't know, depending on which agency, who has authority and who doesn't.
Clearly these are basically people who are put in, like some type of counter-revolutionary
guard, to report back to the White House, not just spying on the civil servants who
are there but spying, like you say, on the people that Trump has appointed to be there
to make sure that they're doing their job.
Now understand just how unqualified these people are to be at these agencies.
The only qualification is they have shown their loyalty to Trump.
I don't know if you ever saw that movie 'Bob Roberts' where Timothy Robins' character is
followed around by these somewhat crazed, would-be brown shirts; but that's the type
of people that we're talking about who are put into these agencies with no expertise,
but rather just an ability to spy on these people.
I don't know who they report to back at the White House.
Maybe it's Reince Priebus, or maybe one of ... Uday and Qusay, when it comes to one of
the Trumps.
I mean, who knows at this point?
But this is what's going on.
It's just a bizarre, almost banana-republic-style.
We have reports this week: Ivanka Trump, who ostensibly has no job with the White House,
is not only getting an office, not only getting security clearance, an ability to go in and
out of these meetings ... She says that she's not obligated to follow ethics rules, but
trust her that she's going to.
I mean, this is just ... We're watching sort of the pillaging and ...
These stories don't get much play, and it's understandable as to why they wouldn't, Farron,
right?
I mean, there's ... The FBI said that they're investigating the president.
This destruction of our government ... I mean, if somebody was to step in tomorrow I think
we could recover from this.
But long-term, this is a real problem.
Well it really is.
What's interesting is that ... Obviously, yeah, we have to focus on the big stories,
we have to talk about the investigations, we have to talk about all of the nonsense
that's going on with the political appointments, and Gorsuch, and everything else.
But even if we took away any sense of scandal, any investigation ... Suppose Trump was operating
without any baggage, nothing would still ... I mean, you still wouldn't get anything done
because they are so incompetent and dysfunctional in there.
I don't even know how to put it, other than ... I mean ...
But I think that's the point.
I think the point here is there's such hostility towards government within his Administration,
and Trump himself has these autocratic tendencies where believes that what he says should just
happen.
Whether it's 'I don't like courts ruling against me.
I don't know why I've got to go through these bureaucracies,' and whatnot, I mean, this
guy is an autocrat.
So you're right.
Even if we put aside all these major stories, there would be real problem here.
Like I say, to a certain extent it's by design.
I mean, you don't cut the IRS when you know you get a return for five or six dollars on
every dollar you spend there ...
