okay I've always been thinking to do or
not to do this video it just takes a
massive, massive amount of time to rank
all the 43 entries for Eurovision but i
like the most of you love this song
competition and there are a number of
good entries this year entries which are
so good that it justifies the trouble of
making this long video, in fact I did my
own top 43 for last year's
competition, feel free to check it out
during your own time. I appreciate that
all the artists and all the singers have
made a lot of time and effort to produce
their own songs however like last year
this will be an honest review of each
song entry and would have nothing to do
with politics at all... full stop. Just to
note, I have listened to each entry for
at least a couple of times now, so don't
take it personal if you do not agree
with some or even all of my preferences
Imagine how boring and predictable it
would be if all of us literally have the
same opinion! In any case, my opinion may
change along the way depending on other
factors like live performances or
staging especially after the semi-finals
With those out of the way, here are my
personal ranking of the 43 entries for
Eurovision 2017
I love a good ballad but "Breathlessly"
just felt uninspiring partly due to the
fact that the song is very slow in its
buildup. The only good thing that I
could say about this song is that it is
inoffensive, however too safe and highly
forgettable. This is a huge step down
from last year's entry by Malta
Now unlike the Maltese entry, "Keep The Faith"
at least tries to be powerful in a
worldly way, but instead this entry felt like
a real drag, as if I'm sitting through
a long indoctrination, forcing me to "keep
the faith, keep the faith". Despite she has
got strong vocals, it felt like a really
long 3 minutes listening to it
This attempt at a disco dance entry is quite
a bland one. The song felt dated it was
only fun for a really short while before
things really got repetitive with the
song's endless chorus of "Spirit of the
Night". Also what felt like a lost
opportunity here was that the male
singer in this song seems to have a
soulful vocal but was limited by the
bland content matter of this song
At least last year's entry by Serhat, "I
Didn't Know" was very cheesy and really
fun. This year it felt rather flat...
Now despite the lively staging and the
active stage presence of its singer,
bobbing around here and there,
"Rain of Revolution" as a song felt very messy
the vocals are just all over the place,
hilarious at times too, but what was
particularly funny, though maybe not in a
good way, is that the chorus is littered
with the line "yeah yeah, yeah yeah" here
and there, as if they desperately needed
something to simply fill the song in
order to reach the 3-minute mark
Basically it all felt like a lot of noise
After a very strong entry last
year with "Color Of Your Life", I think
this has to be the biggest
disappointment for me in this Eurovision
year. I've already listened to "Flashlight"
a couple of times now, and as much as I
wanted to like this entry, but I can't
bring myself to do so. The song started
out very promisingly especially in the
first 40 to 50 seconds of the song,
promising us perhaps that we will have an
epic performance in the chorus segment,
but what we got in the end was that
sense of endless build-up; verse after
verse, it doesn't feel like it's gonna
end. Along the way the singer is so
determined to showcase her very strong
vocals, which they are by the way, but
that is just not enough to save the
whole tiresome song for me. All in all, this
felt more like a showcase for her vocals
and vibratos but set up in such a
stressfully composed song. It gets
really tiring and frustrating when I
hear it more and more
The song starts off with a reading of a quote apparently
from Einstein about something to do with
miracles. To me at least that was already
a bad cheesy start to the whole piece
What about the rest of it? Despite the
uplifting nature of the song especially
at the chorus segment, the idea of
switching so frequently between English
and Italian lyrics is rather distracting
and it comes off as another cheesy
gimmick. However the singer is clearly a
very talented vocalist but what was
supposed to be a heartfelt song ends up
unfortunately, becomes a mere showcase
piece for the singer's vocal talents along
with his ability to alternate between
voices
As ridiculous as the idea seems on paper of combining both rap
and yodeling; an attempt at creativity
was made, and we somehow managed to get
it as a full song in the form of "Yodel it!"
I have a love-hate feeling for this song
on a good day the song can be fun
harmless passing affair, but on normal
occasions, the song is a painful one to
listen to, especially with the constant
yodeling throughout the whole song
There's no doubt that this song is
actually getting loads of attention but
for something as unconventional as this
you can either love it or hate it
"Never Give Up On You" attempts to be a sincere
ballad, it is accompanied by a dedicated
vocal performance by the singer
The revamped version sounds a lot better as
it now has a greater atmospheric feel to
it than the original version, but my primary
problem with this song is that it
doesn't have any standout quality; a real
"WOW" factor if you like. The chorus line,
"I'll never give up on" you is
consistently emphasized throughout the
whole song to the extent that there is
that grinding sense of monotony. In short,
despite its earnest effort, this one
falls flat for me in the end
Unlike the United Kingdom's "Never Give Up On You"
"Apollo" as a pop ballad gives us
something livelier, but just like the
UK's entry, there's no standout factor
here. It's a decent pop ballad albeit a
generic one. I fear it is only a filler
for the competition as it's rather
forgettable
Like Switzerland's "Apollo", "This Is Love" is another pop ballad number but
it is more interesting as it features
higher tempos in its composition
Overall this song can be a fun
experience, and its strong chorus portion
may benefit from a very frenetic stage
during the live competition. Kinda like
Bojana Stemanov's performance of "Beauty
Never Lies" from Eurovision 2015. However
after one or two listens of this song,
this song will probably lose its appeal
for me. As lively as it may be the song
is a generic pop dance ballad
"Gravity" is a safe pop entry. It checks
all the boxes of a passable pop song
Drop beats - check;
Active vocals - check
Inoffensive - check
Active Performance - check
Overall it's all there, but there's
nothing outstanding or anything
particularly memorable about this entry
as well. It's safe and it's generic
Like Cyprus's entry this year, "I Feel Alive"
is another safe pop entry too, but
contains more variation in its pop
composition and most importantly, it is
not as rigid
this entry is nowhere near the fun factor or the charming
mischievousness of "Golden Boy" in 2015
but it has that nice summer party pop
vibe in it. Whilst I'm sure that this will
emerge as a lively package on stage,
there's nothing that truly stands out in
this song for me too
Hmmm... David Guetta's
"Titanium" anybody? In the midst of heavy
sounding ballads and pop entries, "Perfect
Life" will serve as a nice palate
cleanser. An easy listening experience;
However the song may come off as light
and casual as it risks getting buried
into oblivion by other entries in the
competition. Furthermore just like songs
before this, there's nothing outstanding
about this entry as well. Whilst the
song's composition is not really that
special, the singers rather pleasant
vocals actually gave it the extra needed
boost. In any case, as much as the song
is a slow tempo pop entry, I find that
"Perfect Life" is a nice casual song to
listen to
As a rock song, "Time" is a
decent entry featuring both solid vocals
and intensity with an adequate range of
compositional variety to fill in the
3 minute time slot. However what
particularly stood out for me about this
performance is where about 3/4
way into the song, we are treated to a
brief, but nonetheless impressive rally
segment of their intense guitar rift
This entry should stand out as it's the
only rock song featured for this year's
competition
"Historyja Majho Zyccia" or
rather in English, "Story Of My Life"
is both lively and folkish, filled with
pleasantly harmonious vocals by our
likeable pair singers. Just that for me,
after one or two listens, I'm already
satisfied as I don't find myself coming
back to listen to it over and over again
It's not exactly magnetic enough for me
to rank it any higher. However I trust
that this folk ballad will be a
crowd-pleaser as it is fun and uplifting
to listen to, what's more when it's
performed live
Adding to our easy
-listening playlist is "Running On Air",
just like Germany's "Perfect Life", this is
another casual pop entry but sounds way
more livelier as it features more
uplifting melody and vocals. However
again :( there's nothing special to take
away from this entry as well, but as a
whole, it is a likeable song
Let me start off
by saying that there is nothing that
truly stands out about the song, "My Turn"
It's safe, inoffensive and relatively
casual-sounding as a ballad. Whilst there's
not a whole lot I could say about this
ballad, but it is a calm and assuring
song. It is vocally well-delivered
I can't help but feel that there is
something rather sweet about this
piano-centric ballad
Lately it seems that
Armenia is in the business of sending
unconventional entries. Last year we have
the unique power pop entry in the form
of "LoveWave". This year we got "Fly With
Me", my impression is that this entry is
akin to watching a performance art. I can
appreciate the attempt at originality
and the mysticism in this whole
experimental performance package, but if
I were to judge strictly on the merits
of the song itself, ignoring the visuals
and aesthetics for moment, the song
itself wouldn't have made much of an
impact to me unfortunately
In stark
contrast to last year's Russian entry
and contrary to any sense of intensity
that the song's title may imply, "Flame is
Burning" is a slow ballad. Admittedly the
song isn't in any way groundbreaking as
it sounds rather dated as well and being
a tad too sweet for me. Despite all of
that, the performance of the song felt
sentimental and sincere. The main concern
I do have, however,
it's whether or not she would be
able to sustain a good live performance
of this song without all that Autotune
As of 4th of April doing this, it's
rather unfortunate that we may not be
able to hear this onstage due to the
political scenario that surrounds this
whole entry
Now as far as ballads go
this year, this is one of the more stronger
ones. "Don't Come Easy" is introspective,
vocally solid and delivered with a fair
amount of conviction. It seems to have
ticked all the right boxes for what is
needed to be a solid contemporary ballad,
but in the end something still felt
missing for me at least. The song didn't
really have that significant impact nor
it has left that lasting impression on me
Notwithstanding all the controversy
that happened in the Spanish national
finals, "Do It For Your Lover" is a
pleasant pop acoustic entry. I think that
the song's strength could potentially be
its own weakness as well, especially in
the competition. In it's chilled and relaxed
nature, the song isn't one that makes the
biggest impression on first listen which
is very important if you're going to
compete in a contest like Eurovision
It took me awhile and after a couple of
listens, I only then begin to enjoy the
song. It is generally a fun and relaxing
radio-friendly tune to listen to
"Requiem" is a lively, wittily composed piece of
pop romance. The lyrics are all chock
full of romantic allegories to hyperbole
It's a good song, very French, kinda
like the ones you may hear when you are
passing by a loud, lively bistro or cafe
by the beach during summer. However for
me personally, and unlike many of the
other songs that I will go on to rate
higher in this video, this song in my
view, isn't really that outstanding...
It is a good entry, definitely above average,
but there isn't that irresistible
replayability factor that makes me want
to come back to listen to this over and
over again
Just like Armenia's entry this year, Hungary
delivers a traditionally themed
performance. Generally, this is not a song
genre of my choice, and it took me some
time before I started appreciating this
song even more and more. The gritty
nature and originality of the song is
hard to ignore as it strikes a dark and
poignant mood of his own character
making it stand out by its own
uniqueness. Overall this is a solid entry
that adds to that avant-garde flavor to
the whole competition
Taking a
significantly different approach in song
genre from the previous slew of pop entries
it's "Lights and Shadows". Right off the bat,
this might sound rather dated but it
really doesn't matter at all, as there
are many endearing qualities to this
song. The vocal synchronization among
three of them is very harmonious
featuring a highly pleasant variety of
vocal intonation and flexibility
It keeps us thoroughly engaged to this song
throughout the whole duration. While this
entry doesn't have the big WOW factor in it,
it is yet another admirably unique
entry amongst this year's competing
songs
Notwithstanding that some parts sounded
like Katy Perry's "Fireworks",
"In Too Deep" is
a well-composed power ballad, both fresh
and contemporary sounding featuring
solid vocals. Not much further to add
other than that it is an engaging piece
of entry that will likely make a strong
impression on both the juries and televoters alike
Just like Serbia's "In Too
Deep", "Where I Am" is another solidly
composed contemporary power ballad, but
what makes this song more noteworthy is
very much due to the performance of its
singer. Instrumentally wise, the music's
composition was made to sound rather
mild, as she truly carried this whole
song via her powerful vocals, accompanied
by her sassy stage persona. It can't be
stated enough that she really slayed this
number. Overall this Danish entry is a
solid one to enjoy especially the
singers presence

it seems that year in year out
for as long as I could remember,
Azerbaijan puts out solid, quality
entries to this competition, and this
year is no exception. "Skeletons" is
another engaging piece of entry to grace
this year's contest
In the midst of all
the hates and all the snarky comments by
its listeners, I'm pretty sure that I'm
truly in the minority when I say that I
really like this song. Yes it's rather
dated like early 2000s dated, call me
old-fashioned, but I really don't care
This is quite a touching ballad that
feels both uplifting and sincere in its
delivery. The singer is also vocally
competent. I find this highly underrated,
pretty much disliked by many Eurovision
fans, but I hope that the wider general
public would endear themselves to this
performance
The song "Paper" makes great
use of fresh retro vibes and beats
throughout the song's duration
Particularly noteworthy is the singer's vocal
quality throughout especially on the
vibrating chorus line, "Paper". This is an
engaging retro pop entry, one that is
both vocally and rhythmically
solid
Talking about the biggest guilty
pleasure of the year for me, "Space" is
visually super gay, yet as a whole
performance, is just pure fun. As a song,
it's a delightful piece of disco pop
that has really grown so much on me
If he can bring that gloriously charismatic
gayishness on stage, I think he might just
do very well. You may very well cringe at
the cheesiness of this performance but
I'm so looking forward to this on live
stage
Belgium's "City Lights" is a minimalist
sounding pop without all that loudness
and hyperactivity. Listening to it one
could get that overriding sense of
futurism oozing from it, accompanied by
the singer's low-deep vocals, it adds to
that calm moodiness that the
performance intends. My only concern
initially, due to its uncommon
unconventional approach, that it may end
up being monotonous in a long run after
many times listening to it, at least for me
However having said that, I find that
this entry is both interesting and
pleasantly unconventional, that it
conveys futurism in a really minimalist
character that it makes it a very unique
experience overall
Why another year and
another quality entry from Latvia!
"Line" is a pop entry that features an
intriguing mix of lowdown ambience and
deep bass beats throughout its
composition. Whilst it may not exactly hit
you at first instance, due to its
relatively mild tempos, but soon it'll
be clear to any listener that this is
not your average pop song by all means
I take liking to the unique style of this
entry making it both engaging and highly
replayable
"Beautiful Mess" is a
mesmerizing ballad, conveying us that
sombre rainy mood, bolstered by the
series of atmospheric interludes in its
composition. The singer is only 17 years
old and he sounds incredibly mature for
his age. The song is a real grower on me as
it started out rather low on my list
initially, but eventually making nearly
into my top 10
When we were initially
told that the Albanian version of this
song will be revamped into English,
my initial reaction was "That's it..."
"... it's going to be another disastrous..."
"... repeat of last year's Albanian revamp"
To my big surprise this is exactly the
opposite. It is in fact a very strong
revamp into English. The revamp retains
all the good aspects of the original
version's composition. This song features
a really exciting buildup which eventually
unleashed the singers incredibly
powerful vocals. She sounded truly like a
diva who has been served very well by
this epic power ballad composition
This is unquestionably the best power ballad
entry for this year's competition
"Dying to try" I admit, is a surprisingly
impressive ballad. Initially I didn't
really expect much from this offering,
but once I heard it, it really blew me off
Musically wise the song's build-up
consisted of a beautiful series of subtle,
gorgeous background beats, giving it
that sombreness which really immersed me
to the songs narrative. Vocally wise the
singer has demonstrated a high degree of
versatility in his vocals; conveying
tenderness in the low parts of the song
and impressively knocking out the
highest notes of the song. In short this
is a beautifully crafted ballad, one I
hope will be appreciated for both its
musical and vocal composition
The Epic Sax Guy is back! "Hey Mamma!" is a highly
entertaining performance on all counts;
the song, the performers, the staging, the
violin, and of course, that snazzy
saxophone. Now, earlier i made a mention
about the fun factor of Israel's 2015
entry, "Golden Boy". Well for this year,
I think that this very cheeky and
unabashedly mischievious entry
personally reminds me a lot of just that
In short, this is another irresistible
super fun entry for this year
I'm pleasantly surprised as I never would
have expected a song like "Dance Alone" to
be sent by, of all countries,
FYR Macedonia!
But you know what? I think this effort
would really pay out for them. This song
is enjoyably retro wave, both highly
replayable and very radio friendly
This should go far with
both the juries and televotes in the competition
"Verona" is a very effective
duet in that you can sense that hint of
romance between the couple's chemistry
onstage. Performance wise, the execution
of the chorus's portion, in all that
glorious vocal harmony, it is just
mesmerizing! The mood and the setting of
this song puts me into a pleasant state
As if I'm taken on to a very scenic
journey along the Mediterranean coast
What we get here is a really charming package
Often when a song comes across
as dated I would normally point that out
as a potential weakness, as you would
notice throughout this video, but this is
a REAL exception to that rule
"Amar Pelos Dois" or "Love For Both" is just a
dreamy musical piece, featuring both
beautiful vocals and sentimental lyrics
This simplistic and yet emotional piece
really took me back into time, reminding
me as to how far this competition had
come over the course of its rich 60-year
history. A song like this, coming out of
almost nowhere on this day and age
are amongst the very reasons why I just feel
so compelled to make a review video like this
It's just such an emotional piece
My hope is that the hardcore
Eurovision fans and juries alike will
appreciate the timeless quality of this
performance and give it the boost that
it truly deserved to hopefully reach the
finals. Whatever the outcome, it's just a
wonderful thing to know that something
like this will be featured in this
year's competition,
in 2017!
When I first listened to "Blackbird" it put me into
such a trance, something that is truly
characteristic of a hauntingly beautiful
New Age ballad. That dark, sombre
atmosphere throughout its duration
evokes so much emotion, that sense of
vulnerability. It all felt as if I'm
listening to an original soundtrack from
a major motion picture. "Blackbird" is like
a journey, an experience. The quality
exemplified by this entry is nothing
short of breathtaking...
Right from the very first time I listened to
"Grab The Moment", I was instantly blown away by the
excellence
of the whole package. The song to me
represents some of the best that the
electro pop genre has to offer
It features a cool, catchy lyrical performance
along with a slew of creative distortive
elements in both of its visual and
musical composition
a very Daft-Punk inspired performance. Both the video
presentation and staging are really
awesome and they really go well with the
theme of the song. There's just a real
cool factor oozing about, that makes me
love this whole performance
Speaking about the cool factor, performances like
"I Can't Go On" demonstrates why Sweden is
the epitome of success in Eurovision
This is a lively modern pop, yet taking
full advantage of its extensive use of
retro wave throughout its duration
The performance is visually brilliant, both
sleek and sexy. Kinda like watching one
of those premium high-end menswear
advert. Great choreography on the
treadmills. I find this song highly
replayable and very radio friendly as well
No stones are left unturned in this
powerhouse package of a performance
Sweden, this year, is a very serious
contender to win the competition
Surprise, surprise the naked ape is dancing!
From the get-go,
"Occidentali's Karma" has been a favorite to win the
competition for very good reasons; its
catchy lyrics, its whimsicality, its
liveliness and for heaven's sake, from out
of nowhere, we got the naked ape!
The gimmick works!
A critique of Western civilization, yet ironically, packaged in
this very fun and exhilarating
performance. The stage presence of its
singer is just a real pleasure to watch
It felt as if, it's just all about having
a great time. It is however rather
disappointing that the original
3 1/2 minute version of this song
has been cut short to 3 minutes for
the purpose of Eurovision
Nonetheless
as long as every other aspect of the
live performance from the Italian finals
are maintained, from the lively staging,
to the unison chants of "Ale!", and of course,
to our beloved ape, I believe there will
be more than enough standout factor in
this whole package for it to go all the
way to win the competition. After nearly
30 years, it will just be great to see
Eurovision once again returned to Italy
Now, in conclusion I think it's rather
clear that it's a straight up two-way
fight between cool, sexy Sweden and
fun, whimsical Italy. I think there is just a
big gap between Sweden-Italy and the
rest of the other entries this year, in
terms of quality and outstandingness
Although I shouldn't put past the
possibility of any surprise in a contest
like Eurovision. Let's keep this
conversation going, tell me your thoughts
below in the comments. I am looking
forward to engaging with the rest of you
guys. Please, please tell me what do you
think about this year's competition, tell
me what are your top 10, tell me who do
you think is going to win this year...
