Waching daily Apr 9 2017

Hello. It´s me again.

And this video which I will be reacting to

is relatively old. I know that, and I also realise

that there are more pressing issues at hand.

But I just feel like this needs a reaction.

This video was published on 5th April

2016, by the YouTube channel

"ПОСЛЕДНИЕ НОВОСТИ"

WHICH TRANSLATES AS "THE LATEST NEWS."

IT`S THE OFFICIAL YOUTUBE CHANNEL OF

THE RUSSIAN STATE-OWNED TELEVISION CHANNEL "ROSSIYA 24."

THEY HAVE THIS PROGRAM CALLED "ВЕСТИ.DOC"

WHICH CONSISTS MOSTLY OF TALK SHOWS.

SO THIS VIDEO WE WILL BE LOOKING AT IS

THE "ВЕСТИ.DOC" EPISODE FROM APRIL 5,

2016.

THE HOST IS OLGA SKABEEVA.

SO, LET´S TAKE A LOOK.

"THIS IS THE "ВЕСТИ.DOC" PROGRAM, GOOD DAY.

THE NUMBER OF THOSE KILLED, TORN APART, TORTURED TO DEATH, AND BURIED ALIVE

IN THE DONBASS IS, AS YET, UNKNOWN.

THE DOCUMENTARY BY ALEXANDR ROGATKIN IS CALLED "WITHOUT A DATE OF EXPIRATION."

IN TODAY´S EPISODE, WE WILL ALSO SEE THE RUSSOPHOBIC LANDING FORCES IN THE NETHERLANDS..."

IN CASE YOU DON´T KNOW WHAT "RUSSOPHOBIC" AND "RUSSOPHOBIA" ARE,

WE READ ON WIKIPEDIA: "ANTI-RUSSIAN SENTIMENT, OR RUSSOPHOBIA, IS A

DIVERSE SPECTRUM OF NEGATIVE FEELINGS,

DISLIKES, FEAR, AVERSION, AND/OR PREJUDICE OF RUSSIA,

RUSSIANS AND/OR RUSSIAN CULTURE.

ON THE OTHER HAND, RUSSIAN NATIONALISTS,

AND APOLOGISTS OF THE POLITICS OF RUSSIA

OFTEN USE THE ALLEGATIONS OF RUSSOPHOBIA AS A FORM OF PROPAGANDA

TO COUNTER THE CRITICISM OF RUSSIA."

YES, I CAN TESTIFY TO THAT.

ALSO, THE TERM "LANDING FORCES" IS A KIND OF METAPHOR

OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.

IT ISN´T REALLY MILITARY. THOSE PEOPLE AREN´T SOLDIERS.

AND I DON´T REALLY SEE HOW USING THE TERM

"LANDING FORCES" TO REFER TO THEM MAKES ANY SENSE

IN ANY WAY WHATSOEVER EXCEPT AS A

MANIPULATION DEVICE.

OH YEAH, AND ABOUT THAT:

YOU CAN CALL ME PETTY OR PARANOID IF YOU LIKE,

BUT CHOICE OF WORDS IN THE MEDIA IS NO LAUGHING MATTER.

IN 1947, VIKTOR KLEMPERER

WROTE IN "THE LANGUAGE OF THE THIRD REICH":

"NO, THE STRONGEST INFLUENCE

WAS NOT ACHIEVED THROUGH SINGULAR SPEECHES,

NOT THROUGH ARTICLES OR FLYERS,

THROUGH POSTERS OR FLAGS.

IT WAS NOT ACHIEVED THROUGH ANYTHING THAT HAD TO BE TAKEN UP

BY CONSCIOUS THOUGHT OR CONSCIOUS FEELING.

THE NAZISM GLIDED INTO THE FLESH AND BLOOD OF THE MASSES

THROUGH THE SINGULAR WORDS, THE EXPRESSIONS,

THE PHRASES WHICH IT FORCED UPON THEM BY MILLIONFOLD REPETITION

AND WHICH WERE TAKEN UP MECHANICALLY AND UNCONSCIOUSLY."

ALSO, WHY THE HELL WOULD A TALK SHOW HOST

NEED TO SCREAM LIKE THAT?

THAT´S EAR RAPE, WHAT SHE´S DOING!

ANYWAY, BACK TO THIS MORONIC TALK SHOW...

"WE WILL TALK ABOUT WHY THE MAIN AGITATOR TOWARDS THE EUROPEANS IN FAVOUR OF UKRAINE

IS THE UKRAINIAN MP ALEXEI GONCHARENKO,

THE ONE WHO BECAME INFAMOUS THROUGH HIS SELFIES

TAKEN IN ODESSA IN FRONT OF PEOPLE WHO HAD BEEN BURNED ALIVE.

AND NOW HE RIDES AROUND AMSTERDAM IN YELLOW-BLUE STOCKINGS [WOT?]

ASKING THE EUROPEANS TO SUPPORT UKRAINE.

ZAKHAR, HOW IS ALL THIS EVEN POSSIBLE?"

"YOU KNOW, I THINK THAT IF THE RUSSIAN SPECIAL FORCES

HAD HIRED THIS MAN AND

AND ASKED HIM TO ACT AS THE MAIN EURO-ASSOCIATOR,

THAT WOULD HAVE GOT HIM A MEDAL, BECAUSE A PERSON WHO

TAKES SUCH PICTURES WITH THE TRADE UNION HQ [BURNED BODIES] IN THE BACKGROUND;

WHO PROPOSED THAT IN CRIMEA, EVERYONE WEARING THE RIBBON OF St. GEORGE SHOULD BE SHOT IN THE HEAD,

A SIMPLY INADEQUATE PERSON, HE

IT´S AS IF A [RUSSIAN SPECIAL FORCES] OFFICER HAD TOLD HIM TO SMEAR BLOOD ON HIS FACE,

PUT ON STOCKINGS, DRIVE TO EUROPE AND CLAIM TO BE PRO-EUROASSOCIATION.

[OPPONENT ATTEMPTING TO INTERRUPT] - DON´T INTERRUPT.

MISTER FROM POLAND.

I THINK THIS IS A HUGE SUCCESS FOR RUSSIAN DIPLOMACY.

IF THAT IS NOT SO [WOT?], A NEGATIVE SELECTION TAKES PLACE IN UKRAINE:

THE MOST DISGUSTING PERSONS -

AS WITH THE EXAMPLE OF [AN MP] FROM YANUKOVYCH´S PARTY, AND THEN HE BECAME THE NUMBER ONE POROSHENKO AGITATOR -

THIS MAN, WHO IS A TURNCOAT, WHO IS A BLOODY MANIAC,

WHO IS INADEQUATE, HE DRIVES TO EUROPE AND ADVOCATES EURO-ASSOCIATION.

I THINK THIS IS A GREAT BIT UF LUCK. THIS IS A HAPPY RESULT."

...WHICH CAN BASICALLY BE SUMMED UP AS:

"IT´S BAD FOR UKRAINE, THEREFORE WE SHOULD BE HAPPY ABOUT IT."

HOW CHARMING.

ALSO, I´D LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT BY SAYING THAT THE

MP WHO WAS CHOSEN TO REPRESENT

THE EURO-ASSOCIATION MOVEMENT

DISCREDITS THAT MOVEMENT,

THIS GUY HAS BASICALLY ADMITTED THAT

PEOPLE LIKE HIM ARE NOT

REPRESENTATIVE OF THE EURO-ASSOCIATION MOVEMENT.

JUST SAYING.

"MAYBE HE JUST IMPROVED!

AFTER ALL, IT IS RUSSIA WHO GIVES US EXAMPLES

OF PEOPLE WHO WENT FROM MILITANT TO PRESIDENT.

ISN´T THAT GOOD?

WHEN PEOPLE THINK ABOUT WHAT THEY ARE DOING

AND START BEING BETTER?

THIS IS ACTUALLY A PRETTY GOOD POINT IN TWO WAYS.

AT LEAST TWO WAYS.

FOR ONE THING - WELL, YES, IF THAT MAN ADVOCATED SHOOTING

ANYONE SPORTING ENEMY SYMBOLOGY IN CRIMEA,

HE IS AN INGLORIOUS

BASTARD.

AND IT IS ARGUABLE WHETHER OR NOT TAKING SELFIES

IN FRONT OF THOSE BURNED PEOPLE WAS IN BAD TASTE.

AND IF SO, TO WHAT EXTENT.

TO WHAT DEGREE, I MEAN.

HOW MUCH SO.

HOWEVER, IF YOU SUPPORT A PRESIDENT WHO HAS

ACTUALLY KILLED PEOPLE

IN THE QUINTUPLE DIGITS,

YOU CRITICISING HIM IS JUST HELLA IRONIC.

I MEAN, YOU SHOULD REALLY QUESTION YOUR MORAL AUTHORITY.

AND THE POLE WAS CORRECT IN THAT VLADIMIR PUTIN

IS A FORMER FSB MAN.

A FORMER SECRET SERVICE AGENT.

AND HE STILL HOLDS ANNUAL SPEECHES

BEFORE THE FSB ON THE ANNIVERSARY

OF THE FOUNDING OF THE KGB.

AN ESTONIAN PRESIDENT CAME UP WITH THIS THOUGHT EXPERIMENT:

HOW WOULD PEOPLE REACT

IF THE GERMAN CHANCELLOR

WERe TO HOLD ANNUAL SPEECHES

BEFORE THE GERMAN SECRET SERVICE

ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE GESTAPO?

SO IF THE STATEMENTS SOMEONE MAKES

ARE ENOUGH TO LABEL THEM AS "INADEQUATE,"

THEN PUTIN HIMSELF IS THE VERY EPITOMY OF INADEQUACY.

ALSO, ANY IMMORAL DEEDS WHICH

A MEMBER OF A GROUP,

EVEN A LEADING MEMBER, MAY HAVE COMITTED

IN THE PAST, ARE ONLY GROUNDS ENOUGH TO

BE SUSPICIOUS OF THAT GROUP.

THEY DO NOT WARRANT CONDEMNING THAT GROUP.

- IN THIS CASE, THE PEOPLE WHO WENT TO THE NETHERLANDS -

TO DO THAT, YOU FIRST HAVE TO LOOK AT

WHAT THAT GROUP IS DOING AT PRESENT.

AND THE PURPOSE OF THIS SHOW IS OBVIOUSLY

TO CONDEMN THE EURO-ASSOCIATION MOVEMENT.

SO I HOPE THEY OFFER GOOD GROUNDS TO DO SO.

"I´M ADRESSING YOU NOW. WOULD YOU FORGIVE THE PERPETRATORS

OF THE VOLHYNIAN MASSACRE IF THEY WERE TO MEND THEIR WAYS?"

...WHAT? WHAT?

THIS DOESN´T EVEN HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE QUESTION!

DURING THE VOLHYNIAN MASSACRE,

MEMBERS OF THE POLISH ETHNIC MINORITY

IN UKRAINE WERE MURDERED.

YOU´RE GONNA COMPARE THAT TO THIS GUY WHO WENT TO THE NETHERLANDS

MAKING A COUPLE OF STRONG STATEMENTS?

BUT OKAY, LET´S SAY HE WANTED A STRONG, EXTREME EXAMPLE.

THEN THIS STATEMENT STILL DOESN´T MAKE ANY SENSE

BECAUSE THE QUESTION HERE IS NOT WHETHER YOU CAN FORGIVE THE PERSON

ON A PERSONAL, EMOTIONAL LEVEL,

THE QUESTION IS TO WHAT EXTENT

THIS EURO-ASSOCIATION CAMPAIGN PROJECT

IS DISCREDITED BY THE PARTICIPATION OF

THIS PARTICULAR MAN.

AND ASIDE FROM THAT, OF COURSE YOU SHOULD bE FORGIVEN IF YOU HAVE CHANGED!

YOU´RE PRACTICALLY A dIFFERENT PERSON.

YOU SHOULD STILL BE PUNISHED FOR THE DEED, OF COURSE,

BUT

YOU SHOULD NOT BE JUDGED BY IT.

ANYWAY, PLEASE TELL ME HOW THIS QESTION MAKES

ANY SENSE WHATSOEVER AND WHAT PURPOSE IT COULD POSSIBLY HAVE

EXCEPT TO THROW THE POLISH MAN OFF TRACK BY BRINGING UP A SUBJECT

WHICH HE IS EMOTIONALLY VULNERABLE TO.

"YES OR NO?"

-"Don´t interrupt."

"I ASKED YOU A CONCRETE QUESTION. YES OR NO?"

- "My stance on the Volhynian massacre - my country´s stance -" - "WELL WHAT IS IT?"

- "Your country´s -" -"WELL WHAT IS YOUR STANCE?"

"WHAT IS YOUR STANCE?"

"My stance is that it is part of a very complicated past

which is in the past."

- "In the present -" - "THAT IS TO SAY, -"

"... YOU SPIT ON THE REMAINS OF ALL THE POLES WHO DIED BECAUSE OF THAT SCUM!"

"WELL!"

"NOT THIS ONE, PERSONALLY,

BUT THE ONES HE REVERES!"

"This is shameless manipulation!"

"Never again shall anyone spark conflict between us and Ukraine!" -"Don´t shout"

"Because that [Ukraine] is a country of our slavic brothers!"

YOU HAVE TO ADMIRE THIS MAN BECAUSE HE´S SO SENSIBLE.

THERE´S THIS BITTER CONFLICT BETWEEN POLES AND UKRAINIANS

OVER BANDERA, THE UPA AND THE VOLHYNIAN MASSACRE.

IT´S JUST SO UNNECCESSARY BECAUSE

WE COULD SPEND A LOT OF TIME ARGUING ABOUT

THE HISTORICAL OCCURRENCE ITSELF,

THE WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE

IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

IS PRETTY ONE-SIDED. IF YOU LOOK AT THE SOURCES THEY CITE,

THEY´RE ABOUT 70% POLISH SOURCES

- IF NOT 80% -

- WHICH IS NOT TO SAY THAT THE AVERAGE UKRAINIAN´S

POSITION ON THIS IS CORRECT EITHER.

IN ANY CASE,

YOUR AVERAGE UKRAINIAN WHO LOOKS BACK FONDLY ON THE UPA

DOES NOT REMEMBER IT AS THIS ORGANIZATION

WHICH KILLED POLES,

SO IT´S JUST SO UNNECCESSARY TO ARGUE ABOUT THIS...

OH, BY THE WAY, DID YOU NOTICE HOW

WHEN THE POLISH MAN SHOUTED

TO BE HEARD, TO MAKE HIS POINT,

THE HOST TOLD HIM NOT TO SHOUT,

BUT RIGHT BEFORE THAT, WHEN HIS OPPONENT HAD BELLOWED tHIS WHOLE SPEECH

JUST FOR THE HECK OF IT, JUST TO PRETEND HE

WAS ACTUALLY EMOTIONAL ABOUT THE SUBJECT,

SHE DIDN´T CARE?

...BUT SHE´S NOT BIASED!...

ANYWAY, LET´S LISTEN TO SOME MORE OF THIS TALK SHOW.

LET´S PASS THE WORD TO ALESYA. ALESYA,

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS MAN, WHO, AS WE KNOW,

AFTER THE TRAGEDY IN ODESSA, SAID THAT AT LAST

PEOPLE HAD STOOD UP TO SEPARATISM?

AND TOOK PICTURES OF HIMSELF WITH BURNED BODIES IN THE BACKGROUND?

YOU SAY THAT LIKE IT´S SUCH A TERRIBLE THING!

I MEAN, YOU CAN CRITICISE IT,

SURE, BUT

CALM THe FUCK DOWN!

I MEAN, YOU´VE GOT

FAKE EMOTIONS SPRAYING OUT OF YOUR EARS!

PLEASE TELL ME WHAT WAS SO TERRIBLY WRONG WITH TAKING PICTURES OF THOSE CORPSES!

I DON´T SEE HOW HE WAS DESECRATING THEM OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT JUST BY PUBLISHING PICTURES OF tHEM.

HE WAS DOCUMENTING THE AFTERMATH OF AN EVENT

WHICH CONCERNED THE PEOPLE.

MAYBE IT WAS IN BAD TASTE TO PUT HIMSELF IN THE PICTURES, BECAUSE

THAT MADE THEM INTO, TECHNICALLY, SELFIES.

WHICH MAY NOT HAVE BEEN RESPECTFUL ENOUGH

OR APPROPRIATE FOR THAT SITUATION.

BUT, HELL, HE´S A POLITICIAN! HE HAS TO ADVERTISE

BY STICKING HIS FACE INTO EVERY SHOT OF EVERYTHING.

WELCOME TO THE DOG-EAT-DOG WORLD OF POLITICS.

AND AS FOR HIS STATEMENT THAT THEY FINALLY MANAGED TO STAND UP TO SEPARATISM,

WELL, THE ODESSA TRAGEDY INVOLVED A

PEACEFUL PRO-UKRAINIAN DEMONSTRATION

BEING ATTACKED BY AN ARMED

PRO-RUSSIAN MOB.

WHO´S TO SAY HOW IT WOULD HAVE ENDED

IF NOT FOR THE PRESENCE OF AN ARMED GROUP

KNOWN AS THE "SELF-DEFENCE OF THE MAIDAN"?

...WHO CAME WITH THe PRO-UKRAINIAN DEMONSTRATION.

THE DEMONSTRATION WHICH, BY THE WAY, CONSISTED MOSTLY OF FOOTBALL FANS.

SO YEAH, MAYBE HE SHOULD HAVE EXHIBITED MORE sORROW OVER

THE DEATHS THAT HAD OCCURRED.

HOWEVER, YOU CAN HARDLY REPROACH HIM FOR BEING GLAD

THAT THE DEMONSTRATION, WITH THE AID OF THIS ARMED ORGANIZATION,

HAD BEEN ABLE TO PROTECT ITSELF.

I WILL PUT A LINK IN THE DESCRIPTION TO A DETAILED ACCOUNT

- WITH PICTURES -

OF THE ODESSA TRAGEDY, PUBLISHED ON

THE NEXT DAY AFTER IT HAD OCCURRED.

BUT ANYWAY, I THINK THAT´S ENOUGH FOR THIS VIDEO, I

WILL pROBABLY MAKE A PART TWO,

GOODBYE.

Sloth's Tragic Real-Life Story - Duration: 6:09.

Even if you don't know his name, chances are you know one iconic role played by John Matuszak...

"Sloth!"

No matter how tragic Sloth's life was at the hands of the Fratelli family, though, it doesn't

come close to the wild ups and downs of John Matuszak's real life.

Beneath the prosthetics, Matuszak spent years struggling with drugs and wildly reckless

behavior that led to his untimely death at the age of 38.

Here's Sloth's tragic real-life story.

Drugs, booze, and football

Before he ever set foot in front of a camera, John Matuszak was known first and foremost

as a football player.

The Houston Oilers made Matusak the number one overall draft pick in 1973 - and rightfully

so.

He measured in at 6 foot 8 and 280 pounds!

In fact, the only thing in the locker room bigger than Matuszak was his drug habit.

In 1970s slang, football players with a heavy amphetamine habit were called "747s" because

of how high they were "flying."

Matuszak, well, they jokingly called him "John Glenn."

As in the astronaut.

But the drugs couldn't keep The Tooz floating forever.

He was let go by the Houston Oilers, then dropped from the Kansas City Chiefs after

coach Paul Wiggin found him unconscious from an overdose of whiskey and pills.

He then wound up on the Washington Redskins, but coach George Allen gave him the boot over

concerns of his diet of "vodka and Valium.

"One for me.

That's the breakfast of champions there."

Rings and handcuffs

After the Redskins, Matuszak wound up with the Oakland Raiders.

The joke at the time was that "You didn't have to be a convicted felon to play for the

Raiders, but it helped," and Matuszak fit right in with the infamous beefed-up leatherheads

of the late '70s Raiders.

He was a key player in two Super Bowl wins for the team, first in 1977, and then in 1981,

but even that kind of success didn't stop his drug-fueled antics, like the time he was

arrested for driving drunk and firing a gun at street signs.

A few nights before his second Super Bowl win, he earned a $1000 fine for partying,

but considering the team as a whole racked up a legendary $15,000 in fines before that

Super Bowl win, it isn't hard to argue that he had certainly found a home for himself,

of sorts, on that team.

World's Strongest Man

During some off-season time, Matuszak entered the 1978 World's Strongest Man competition

because he was bored.

Like you do.

By then, he had beefed up to 315 lbs, and while he didn't win it all, he did place 9th.

That's already pretty impressive, but even more so because, according to his Oakland

Raiders teammates, he never actually trained specifically for the contest — he just used

his natural brawn to do things like bend an iron bar around his neck.

That's pretty intense.

Image problems

After retiring from football, Matuszak opened up to discuss more intimate parts of himself

to try to separate himself from the persona he created as an utterly terrifying defensive

lineman.

In interviews gathered by UPI in 1982, he discussed the differences between his monstrous

public persona and the man he actually was in his personal life.

He played Santa Claus and taught football to kids at summer camp.

He regularly visited his sister in the hospital when she was struggling with cystic fibrosis

(which two of his brothers died from).

Few of those stories made the press, however.

People just wanted to hear about him getting drunk and rowdy.

It was the legacy he lived with.

Painkillers

Being a maniac on field makes some good press and intimidates the competition, but it's

disastrous on the human body.

After retirement, Matuszak struggled with physical pain that led to a full-blown painkiller

addiction after his football career.

He would struggle with that addiction for the half-dozen or so years he lived post-retirement.

In all likelihood, his short but intense football career ate him alive.

Acting heavyweight

Considering his short acting career, Matuszak appeared in a lot of films that either did

well at the time or developed cult status.

He starred in North Dallas Forty, which is still considered one of the best football

movies ever made.

He of course has The Goonies under his belt, a film where he was genuinely loved by everyone

involved.

He also appeared in Ringo Starr's film Caveman and had a part in the cult classic sci-fi

comedy Ice Pirates.

One of his longest recurring roles was on Aaron Spelling's short-lived Hollywood Beat,

where he played a gay bar manager called George Grinsky.

Playing a gay character with sensitivity in the Reagan years was a pretty gutsy move,

and critics at the time skewered him for it, saying he was the "latest casualty of [a]

sensitivity epidemic."

It really seems like nobody at the time would just let him try to succeed in anything that

didn't involve him brutalizing people.

Traffic assault

Even in the midst of the most success he'd ever experienced, Matuszak struggled with

a crisis of identity.

Also, drugs.

He was still on a lot of drugs.

A couple of years before he died, Matuszak got in a car wreck and punched the other driver

unconscious before fleeing the scene.

Considering the work he was involved with at the time was the action flick One Man Force

and the cop drama Miami Vice, you have to wonder if there was some overlap between reality

and fantasy at that point.

He was delving back into his reckless ways even as he was finally being recognized for

the talented, sensitive man he wanted to show the world.

"Sloth love Chunk"

A tragic end

Throughout his life, John Matuszak never hesitated to dive headfirst into any challenge.

But he appeared to have his life under control in the late '80s, when he wrote in his 1987

autobiography, Cruisin' With the Tooz: "I abstain from cocaine, and any other foreign

substance, entirely now.

I take nothing, not even sleeping pills.

I've hit damn near bottom.

I don't ever want to go back."

Nevertheless, Matuszak passed away in 1989 at the far-too-early age of 38 from an accidental

overdose of Darvon, a prescription painkiller.

Part of what contributed to his death was an enlarged heart, too big for even his giant

body.

It was the heart so many people came to love.

8 Totally Underrated Box Office Flops - Duration: 7:38.

The scale typically used to justify a movie's success is the amount of money it earns at

the box office, and that's understandable.

If one movie earned more than another, that means more people saw it.

But, that definitely doesn't mean it's better.

Sometimes, truly terrific films flop hard as far as the bean-counters are concerned.

Here are some of the best box office bombs.

Edge of Tomorrow

Without a proper marketing strategy that gets butts in seats, movies can fail at the box

office — which is what happened to Doug Liman's 2014 film Edge of Tomorrow, based

on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's novel All You Need is Kill.

The trailers looked like just another generic sci-fi flick, except this time with a bit

of Groundhog Day mixed in.

"What the hell?"

But Edge of Tomorrow is actually a whole lot more than that.

It's a sci-fi film that channeled D-Day into a future war against an alien race with

the ability to reset the day.

That is until Tom Cruise comes along and breaks their winning streak.

It's basically a video game brought to live action, in the best way possible.

Spawn, advance, die, repeat.

Despite great reviews, Edge of Tomorrow was a box office dud.

And make no mistake, the bulk of the film's failure hinged on its botched marketing campaign.

The studio basically retitled it Live.

Die.

Repeat when it was released on video.

If that doesn't scream bad marketing, nothing does.

Dredd

Comic book movies are all the rage in Hollywood these days, but that's no guarantee for

success.

Dredd from 2012 is the perfect example.

Despite solid reviews from critics, it only grossed $35.6 million against a $50 million

budget.

The film takes a few liberties with the source material, but there's no denying it captures

the attitude of the comics pretty well.

It's a brutal work of art, and the movie that fans of the comics had waited decades

to see.

Plus, it features a motorcycle chase scene that rivals The Matrix Reloaded.

That's a pretty sweet bike, right?

Too bad it wasn't sweet enough to greenlight a sequel...yet

"Negotiation's over."

Zodiac

The mystery of the Zodiac killer is a tale that's arguably as intriguing and perplexing

as Jack the Ripper, which is why so many people have tried to dramatize the story — including

David Fincher, who adapted Robert Graysmith's crime book Zodiac for the big screen in 2007.

Laying out an extensive, in-depth case like the Zodiac killer for a general audience is

difficult, but Fincher crafts a compelling retelling of not only the murders, but also

the manhunt surrounding them.

"I'm not the Zodiac."

Couple that with a stellar cast that included Robert Downey, Jr., Mark Ruffalo, and Jake

Gyllenhaal, and you've got a great drama.

Unfortunately, the film grossed just $84.8 million at the box office, but found new life

on home video, scoring profits of around $20 million.

Hugo

The director responsible for hard-R films like Goodfellas, The Departed, and The Wolf

of Wall Street isn't exactly who you'd expect to direct a PG movie, but Martin Scorsese

did a great job with the dramatic adventure Hugo.

Hugo received stellar reviews from critics, but that wasn't enough to propel the movie

into box office glory.

It grossed almost $186 million worldwide against an estimated production budget of $150 to

$170 million.

Although it failed to reach the box office heights, Hugo is still a brilliant film and

a rare look into the rise of automation in the early 20th century.

Scorsese blended steampunk elements into a historical film with a Parisian backdrop — a

combination seldom seen in Hollywood, drawing cues from A Trip to the Moon and The Impossible

Voyage rather than modern superhero flicks.

And that's what makes it beautiful.

The Road

Based on the novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy, The Road was released in 2009 and

grossed a mere $27.6 million against a $25 million production budget.

But the fact that the film made it out at all is a miracle.

Anyone who's read a McCarthy novel knows how difficult they are to translate onto the silver

screen.

Seriously, it's just a whole lot of that.

How do you show audiences that the film they're watching is set in a post-apocalyptic world?

Simple: make everything dark and gray.

There's rarely been a more haunting representation of a post-apocalyptic world, and that's why

this film is so important to the genre.

It isn't about why the world is the way it is.

Instead, it's about the father-son relationship of the main characters.

Sure, it might be bleak, but it's a story well worth seeing.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Based on Patrick O'Brian's naval novel, Master and Commander was meant to be a war movie

blockbuster.

Unfortunately for Russell Crowe, who starred in the often forgotten film, it was released

the same year as the cartoonish, non-war blockbuster, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the

Black Pearl, which introduced Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow to the world.

Turns out, there wasn't enough room for two adventures on the high seas.

"I'm Captain jack Sparrow"

But forget all that junk.

Master and Commander is a feast for the eyes, depicting an often forgotten period of European

history, and it does so remarkably well.

Unlike many other historical dramas, it gets the real-life details mostly right.

And Crowe brings it all home with his exceptional performance.

The fact that the film received a whopping ten Oscar nominations underscores its excellence,

and legendary film critic Roger Ebert gave the film a rare perfect score, saying "it

achieves the epic without losing sight of the human."

Speed Racer

The Wachowskis made a name for themselves by writing and directing The Matrix trilogy.

When it came time for them to tackle a new project, they chose to bring the classic Speed

Racer series to life on the big screen.

With the Wachowskis at the helm and the name recognition of the property, it was a shock

to see Speed Racer flop at the box office, grossing $93.9 million on a budget of $120

million.

"Whoa."

The film's cartoonish visuals may have turned off some critics, but for franchise fans,

it was exactly what the film needed to capture the awe of the original anime.

What's interesting, though, is that the movie includes themes of politics and corruption,

as well as general issues in society, and those themes unfold on a number of levels.

Yet it never forgets that it's still a kids' movie.

Speed Racer didn't fall into the trend of gritty re-imaginings that plagued the 2000s.

Instead, it takes a funny, witty, and light-hearted charm that's exactly what fans wanted.

It's just too bad more people didn't see it.

The BFG

Steven Spielberg ranks among the greatest living filmmakers, and the fact that he's

the highest-grossing director of all time only bolsters his legacy.

He's the guy that pretty much created the summer blockbuster, after all.

But none of that helped The BFG gross more than $183.2 million worldwide on an estimated

$140 million budget in 2016.

The movie was a recipe for success.

It was directed by Spielberg, distributed by Disney, and is based on the famed Roald

Dahl novel of the same name.

So why it failed to break $200 million is a mystery.

Monetary problems aside, The BFG is a criminally underrated film.

Despite its big budget, fantastical elements, and summer release, it was still far from

your traditional summer tentpole.

Basically, it was a big-budget fantasy, without the extravaganza.

It's not so much about the spectacle as it is about the journey, and that's where audiences

will find themselves captivated by Mark Rylance's outstanding motion-capture performance as

well as the irresistible charm of Hollywood newcomer Ruby Barnhill.

Do yourself a big favor and check out The BFG, ASAP.
