- The 10 most popular videos over the course of 2017
Y'all seem to like the swimming videos!
I get a little bit teary-eyed watching that video.
What's up Trainiacs, let's end off this year
with a bang in the new studio, new shooting set-up.
I believe Phillips Hue calls this Savannah Sunset.
We got a new table to talk to you at,
A new coffee table.
Same unfortunate face.
Sorry I can't do anything about that.
But, today we're gonna talk about the ten most popular
videos over the course of 2017, and considering I started
doing one every single day since February 1st,
we got a lot to choose from.
I was looking through all videos and I don't
even remember like 80% of them.
That doesn't bode well for how good those videos were.
All the videos are going to be linked
in the description below and if you aren't
yet subscribed and you get on a binge-watching role
we totally support that type of addiction.
By all means, please consider subscribing
and if you are an existing Trainiac,
thank you for an awesome 2017!
Love ya pals!
So these top ten are in order of growing in popularity
and the tenth most popular video of this year
were my chosen running shoes of 2017,
where I walked through why I was trying out three
pairs of Sketchers, why I liked the On Running Cloud,
why occasionally I would go to the Hoke One One Clifton 2s,
why I would go with some more aggressive shoes
here and there.
Apparently people want to know about what's
on my stinky feet!
I liked these, I like these.
Next on the list was a video about panic-free open water
swim training.
I know that a lot of triathletes go out
into the water and it's one of the biggest things that
they're afraid of.
I, myself, was terrified of open water
and on this day I went and did a swim in open water -
in completely black water where I couldn't see a hand
in front of my face.
Well we don't have a choice,
we're doing this now.
And it reminded me of all those
times where as a kid where I was like,
Oh my God, what's down there?
Probably the Kraken!
Fortunately, that video had tips to help everyone out
and get over those fears.
Next is a video with some tips
about how to breathe easier when you're swimming.
This was probably the biggest thing that I
struggled with in the first two years of swimming.
So one of the very first vlogs that I did was about
how to breathe easier so you don't feel that (gasps)
that really full chest feeling, and it's actually
a very simple trick that was solved in that video.
Check it out!
The next most popular video was a
video about how much triathletes need to train to
do well in a sprint, an Olympic, a half Iron Man,
and an Iron Man, and it even kind of goes through
a general, basic, here's how many hours you need
to train if you just want to finish.
Here's how many hours
you need to train if you want to do really well.
But if you start getting into longer distances,
your body needs to be a lot stronger.
I think it's wise words, because a lot of people get
into triathlons thinking, You know what?
Boom!
I'm gonna do me an Iron Man!
Well, you know what?
It's fine to do a long distance race for your first race,
but if you're not training a certain amount you gotta
go in with a different expectation
and this video outlined that.
The next most popular video was, like, Buzzfeed-style.
It was the best body type for triathlons where I talked
about which distance of triathlon worked best depending on
whether you're very thin, whether you're very muscular,
and where we see those muscular vs extremely thin people
doing well in short vs long-course racing.
I guess a lot of people wanted to know which races they
were best suited for.
I'll give you a tip right here and now
spoiler alert, do whatever race you like.
The fifth most popular video was the swim drill
that every beginner needs to try.
And you know what?
Now that I think about it,
I can't even remember what that swim drill was.
Building a stroke from scratch.
I still remember that.
It did really well right from the start.
What was the drill?
Do a stroke and sculling to the count of ten.
So one,
two.
Go check it out!
Cliff-hanger!
Y'all seem to like the swimming videos apparently, though.
Fourth most popular video was analyzing Patrick Lange's
running stride.
Now, when we were in Kona,
Patrick Lange absolutely killed that run,
just as he did the year before.
He looked so smooth, so upright, like he isn't
struggling even in that Kona heat, he ran
past Lionel Sanders like Lionel was standing still.
However, Lionel Sanders really didn't look good at
that point, but we took a look at what were
the technique features that Patrick Lange had
that we can all learn from and maybe not run
as fast as Patrick Lange, but certainly
get a little bit faster, right?
Third most popular video on the podium is
a swim trick that every triathlete needs to try.
I tell you, this video went against everything that
Youtube gurus tell you to do.
The title's about swimming, but the thumbnail
is me on a bike.
It takes me minutes to actually get
into the swimming.
It's just all around a conundrum
why this video has done so well, but apparently a lot
of you liked it probably, I want to say
about thirty thousand times.
Thank you!
A really easy was to do this is go up to the edge of
the pool, put your hands at the edge of the pool
to hold yourself up, and just kick as lightly
as you possibly can.
The second most popular video,
with a silver medal is actually strangely
a video that I'm not really even in.
Apparently you don't like me that much,
because this video is actually analyzing
my friend Trevor's swim stroke and certain technique
about how he gets so long and basically his entire
length of the body is fourteen inches, at least,
longer than my body even though he's only about
four inches taller.
You can see he's got a really
nice body roll, you can see that his arms get out
a long way in front of him.
And that technique
allows him, I believe, to swim anywhere between
about fifteen and twenty percent faster than me
on average while he still seems to be working fairly easily.
Funny story about Trevor, he's not one to like the camera,
but apparently all of you like him.
And the very most popular video, and this was not
a surprise at all.
Leading into producing this video,
I thought that it was going to do really well.
It was our coverage,
the nineteen minute full-on recap
of the Iron Man World Championship, which absolutely
killed it, I want to say it's around eighty-five thousand
views so thank you all for watching that.
In the end, Patrick Lange broke the course record
by two minutes, racing eight hours one minute
and 40 seconds.
And I think probably a thousand
of those views are from me, still to this day,
I get a little be teary-eyed watching that video.
Dreams are made, limits are tested,
and goals are realized every year at Iron Man, Hawaii.
And thank you for watching all those skip-able ads,
it helps me pay for all these fancy lights,
like Savannah Sunset doesn't pay for itself, huh?
