Planet Coaster | Society Park Part 24 - Staff Buildings - Duration: 22:15.

Hello fellow Planet Coaster lovers!

Welcome back to a new episode of Society Park

So as you can see this time around I added the commentary in the subtitles.

This was a suggestion in the comments from the last video

If you don't want it you can turn it off and for me it is easier then editing in the video itself

This also gives me the opportunity to correct any spelling mistakes xD

In this episode we'll first start off with theming a staff building, I just kept it small and square so that

it was more easy to cover and hide from the guests of the park

Later in this episode we'll just be filling up some of the gaps.

And at the end we'll even get back to the entrance area and place a few buildings there.

So as I said this building stays very small and I wanted to give it a bit more texture than the plain white walls.

Hence why I chose for the plaster decoration pieces, they give it a bit more texture.

Also trying to get in some custom doors, which actually worked out quite well.

Lowering the opening a bit so that the doors could actually fit in.

Putting a bit of a trim in there to cover the black walls

For the roof I figured to use the same panels as for the walls since there will also be some vegetation on it

Little trim on top to give it a bit more contrast.

Here comes the vegetation, covering everything up a bit.

Little sign so to prevent guests from going in there

And here is that I found out that you could advertise attractions by using the signs.

I missed that in the livestreams (or I simply forgot). So here I go to set the links in the entire area

Don't worry I'll do the rest off cam

Saw that I forgot to put a sign at the last flatride so just quickly fixing that

Quite a dumb name for this ride but I couldn't come up with something better related to healthcare.

Not that this name is related xD

Anyway if you know a better name don't hesitate to tell me.

Also putting a small height bar in, will have to do this for all the rides in the park yet.

Actually a shame that I just now thought of it and not earlier on

Placing some path essentials and making the last bridge for the monorail.

Checking if the monorail wasn't going through some trees, often a problem that I encounter xD

And here we start on making a small flower bed which will also contain some directional signs.

Just making this very simple so that it doesn't take away allot of the view.

Making sure that you can actually see it at night, not much use otherwise.

And here we finally start on continueing the entrance area of the Healthcare section of the park

Figuring out a bit of an interesting structure.

Which is quite challenging for me since I'm not really used to the modern theme.

The roof wasn't really working out so I decide I'll make my own using these small wood pieces.

It will up the part-count quite fast but my pc is already burning so a bit more won't really matter anymore.

Making this building somewhat usefull by placing a first aid in there. Didn't have one in the area and it would

be a bit ironic in this area if I wouldn't have a first aid in here somewhere.

Breaking up the brown in this building bit whit some white trims. Also makes the transitions between

the buildings a bit more fluent.

Covering up the green look from the first aid to make it more coherent.

And again trying to make a nice openstanding door.

And offcourse some vegetation on the roof since it is this area's signature.

Tried looking for a ride to fit in there, which is kind of the problem with this whole area.

I have no idea what to do with the open space just yet. Some rides fit better in future areas and others

just don't fit at all.

Here comes the second building which will also include a path to the backstage area.

I figured to try and put a staff building in the backstage area, since that is where they are most of the time

in reality though.

I haven't tested it out yet with guests cause offcourse they shouldn't be able to enter this part.

But I figured that the peeps in Planet Coaster don't go to areas where there is nothing for them.

So I kind of assume/hope that they will not use the path that will be coming in here.

Here I'm making sure that the whole backstage area will come together a bit more.

Giving the staff a chance to actually park their cars here for easier acces.

Will maybe come back here in the future to put in a bit more props that belong in a backstage area.

Closing one of the staff buildings to get some staff in here to make sure they won't walk through any scenery

And to make that go succesfull I placed a few of these barriers.

The fence thingies seem to work better in my opinion though. But the barriers worked good enough.

in the end...

Adding an overhang to make the building look a bit more interesting.

Keeping it a bit modern seems to become a little problem but I'll wait for the total view before

I go in and maybe change it all.

Trying to look if I can make the path a bit more narrow so that I could place a door in there.

Unfortunatly I couldn't get more narrow so I figured to work with the principle that they'll mostly walk in

the middle of the path.

Placing some woos trims on the side of the roof to make it simulair to the middle roof part at the overhang.

Here is where I decided to work with the walking in the middle principle what I mentioned a bit back.

I also wanted to make sure that people wouldn't be able to see backstage while the door is standing open

I figured that placing a bit of a fence would suffice

Unfortunatly my staff didn't agree with the fence and kept walking through it.

Here I tried to give the building a bit more modern feel by making in all glass corner.

Well sort of at least..

Adding some greenery to the building to make it more alive.

Star Wars: THE LAST JEDI - The Best One Yet? (spoiler-free movie review) - Duration: 7:32.

Hello, and welcome to Movie Night - I'm your host, Jonathan Paula.

Tonight's one and only film will be an opening day review of the latest entry in the "Star

Wars" saga.

Before we begin, a word of warning - although I'll be avoiding any major spoilers; I will

still be discussing the film in broad strokes, sharing footage from the trailers, and describing

some smaller moments in detail.

So, if you'd like to experience this film completely blind, as I did (which I highly

recommend) - I suggest you hit the "Watch Later" button, and come back after you've

seen it.

With that said, here's my glowing review of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi".

The Force is strong with this one.

Like, really strong.

The ninth installment in the juggernaut space-opera / fantasy / action franchise was released

worldwide on December 15, 2017.

If word of mouth and historical trends are any indication, it should break the two-billion

mark in ticket sales, becoming only the fourth movie in history to do so.

The second entry in Disney's updated "sequel trilogy", and the eighth episode in the main

franchise - writer and director Rian Johnson may just have crafted the best one yet.

At two-hours and thirty-two minutes, "The Last Jedi" is the longest film in the franchise

to date; but it doesn't feel like it.

The tension and stakes have never been higher; as the vaulted Resistance is whittled down

to only a handful of ships.

With the dreaded First Order hot on their trail, their last-ditch survival depends on

increasingly bleak odds; but if there's a thematic message to this film it's finding

hope from hopelessness.

Elsewhere, Force-sensitive scavenger Rey trains to become a Jedi while evil forces attempt

to draw her in.

All four of the breakout stars from "The Force Awakens" return; Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver,

John Boyega, and Oscar Issac - each handle their increased responsibilities with impressive

performances.

Ridley is especially adept at balancing her emotionally and physically challenging role

like a veteran; sparing off against returning "Original Trilogy" star Mark Hamill with surprising

ease.

He plays the downtrodden and isolated Jedi legend with more bitterness than we've seen

before - but it fits into Johnson's singular vision remarkably well.

The scenes between them are the real heart of this story, with Skywalker warning his

new apprentice, "This is not going to go the way you think."

And even though the 'impatient student receiving Jedi training from a grumpy mentor in a remote

setting' exhibits obvious shades of "The Empire Strikes Back" - it does result in some of

the film's most effective emotional moments.

Thankfully though, besides that, "The Last Jedi" borrows far less from its predecessors

than "The Force Awakens" did.

Indeed, instead of leveraging fan-service, this film succeeds because of the strength

of its core characters.

They're supported by equally interesting turns from Carrie Fisher, Andy Serkis, Domhnall

Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern, and Benicio del Toro.

Thanks to bold choices in the PG-13 rated script, our heroes no longer feel 'safe'.

When someone's fate teeters on the brink of death, a last minute rescue isn't always guaranteed.

The opening space battle, a bombing-run against a Dreadnaught-class starship is particularly

awesome.

It might just be my favorite action sequence of the entire franchise.

When Issac jams the airbrakes on his X-Wing to perform a slick J-turn to swoop behind

a couple of TIE Fighters?

My theater went nuts.

Oftentimes, these galactic dog-fights are a mess of cockpit cutaways and exploding ships.

Not here.

Johnson's deft direction clearly lays out the stakes and consequences, illustrates the

action and players with concise geography, and boils down all the dramatic tension to

a single character's determined sacrifice.

The result is flawless storytelling and raucous entertainment.

Meanwhile, Boyega is paired up with newcomer Tran in a somewhat uninteresting side-quest.

This sequence, which explores a vibrant new casino-themed planet (think Monaco, but with

horse-size goat things) lets the slack out of the extremely taut pacing and simply isn't

as engaging as the rest of the film.

Although critical to the story, it feels like an unnecessary detour, and the lone blemish

on an otherwise excellent script.

Well, except for a couple weird character decisions - like deliberately withholding

information from an ally - but we're talking about a $200-million dollar space-western

with magic samurai wizards; not Shakespeare, so...

While C-3PO and R2-D2 make their requisite appearances, it's the spunky little BB-8 ball-droid

who once again delivers a great deal of this picture more lighter moments.

Whether he's clumsily rolling into walls because of a boxy disguise, or saving our heroes with

a unique solution; he's a clear audience favorite.

"The Last Jedi" is also packed with loads of inventive new creatures - from cute little

Porgs to somewhat gross sea-cows.

Last, but certainly not least is Fisher in her final film role.

Before her tragic and untimely death in 2016, she completed all of her filming for "The

Last Jedi"; lighting up the screen with poise, beauty and hope.

The emotionally turbulent picture is dedicated to her honor with a simple but remarkably

poignant message, "In loving memory of our princess."

If you go into this film with theories or predictions - prepare to be surprised; because

"The Last Jedi" is wonderful at subverting expectations.

Some of the character decisions, jokes, or reveals will be divisive, but I for one loved

the risks this picture took.

It's a brave new direction for "Star Wars", and it pays off in a big way.

Visually speaking, "Episode VIII" is gorgeous.

A cinematic painting in every frame; from the harsh landscapes of Luke's island solitude,

to the red salt plains of Crait.

The lightsaber fights have never looked better; shot from static wide-shots, which allow the

sword-swinging action to figuratively, and literally shine.

After nine movies, it almost goes without saying, but the effects-work from Industrial

Light and Magic is predictably impeccable - computer elements are seamlessly blended

with the practical, while animated characters go face to face with their human counterparts.

50-time Academy Award nominee John Williams once again delivers a beautiful and powerful

score.

The 85-year-old borrows plenty of leitmotifs from his earlier work - "Rey's Theme", and

"The Force" are recycled quite often - but it's harsher and intense string-led concertos

that make up the bulk of the new material.

With time, I'm sure it'll be revered as some of his best work since "Harry Potter".

Speaking of time - it's the only thing preventing me from giving a more comparative review.

Without any additional viewings, it's hard for me to assess where this film ranks among

its extraordinary predecessors.

After a lone opening-night viewing with all the hype and adrenaline therein?

My jubilation may fade, but I dare say it's the best "Star Wars" movie yet.

And as a lifelong fan of the series, I realize that might sound like a blasphemous thing

to say... but this really is a thrilling, complex, and incredibly satisfying adventure

all fans will adore - I can't recommend it enough.

Nitpicks aside, "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" is definitely an AMAZING film - and one I

can't wait to rewatch again and again.

Celebs Who Can't Stand Jay Z - Duration: 4:36.

Hip-hop feuds are nothing new, but no one has had quite as many fights as Jay-Z.

With a reported net worth of $810 million in 2017, Jay's successful career spans over

four decades and features plenty of rap beef.

Here are some celebrities who haven't exactly seen eye to eye with the Brooklyn rapper over

the years.

Solange Knowles

In what remains one of the most explosive celebrity fights on record, Jay-Z was physically

attacked by his wife's sister, Solange Knowles, who, according to TMZ, "was wildly kicking

and swinging at him inside an elevator" following the 2014 Met Gala after party in NYC.

A few days later, the trio issued a joint statement to the Associated Press, saying,

"Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred.

They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public.

They both have apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family."

Drake

Despite collaborating in 2009, the rap mogul and Canadian star have had a tumultuous relationship,

to say the least.

When Drake's Thank Me Later dropped in 2010, the pair left fans puzzled.

They collaborated on the song "Light Up," but just a few tracks later, Drake was dissing

his idol on "Thank Me Now," rapping,

"That's around the time that your idols become your rivals."

Fast forward to 2014 when Drake told Rolling Stone,

"It's like Hov can't drop bars these days without at least four art references!

I think the whole rap/art world thing is getting kind of corny."

Nas

Before they ever collaborated, Jay and Nas spent an entire decade feuding in what was

a battle for the ages.

After taking several jabs at one another, Jay seemingly went too far when he declared

he had a fling with Carmen Bryan, the mother of Nas' daughter, during a 2001 freestyle

dubbed "Supa Ugly" — and Jay's mom reportedly told her son to apologize.

He did, reportedly saying,

"I want to apologize to Carmen and any females I may have offended."

In 2005, the pair officially buried the hatchet.

That year, Jay staged a concert he called "I Declare War" and used it to do the opposite,

declaring peace with Nas, signing him to Def Jam and performing with him on stage.

Robert De Niro

Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro and Jay-Z may not seem like the most obvious pair to

run in the same circles, but the two did cross paths at Leonardo DiCaprio's birthday party

in 2012 — and their encounter didn't go over too well.

"You talkin' to me?"

According to Page Six at the time, when Jay went to say hello to the Hollywood legend,

De Niro called him out for being disrespectful and not returning any of his calls, despite

previously agreeing to record a song for De Niro's Tribeca Film Festival.

An insider claimed,

"Bob wasn't in any mood to make polite conversation.

He told Jay that if somebody calls you six times, you call them back.

It doesn't matter who you are, that is just rude."

Kanye West

Another one of Jay's biggest adversaries is former friend and collaborator Kanye West,

who seemed at first to be on Team Jay.

Until, that is, he went on an unexpected rant during a 2016 concert in San Jose, slamming

Jay for not reaching out after Kim Kardashian's Paris robbery ordeal.

He then turned on Beyonce, saying,

"Beyoncé, I was hurt because I heard that you said you wouldn't perform unless you won

Video of the Year over me [at the VMAs]…

We are all equal.

But sometimes we be playing the politics too much and forget who we are just to win."

In an August 2017 interview, Jay revealed the strain their relationship is now under.

"But you brought my family into it, now it's a problem with me.

That's a real, real problem."

Fat Joe

In the late '90s, there was plenty of speculation about a feud brewing between Jay and Fat Joe,

CEO of Terror Squad Entertainment — including accounts of Jay getting hit in the head with

a champagne bottle at a nightclub.

"There was bad blood between Terror Squad and Roc-A-Fella for a long time and next thing

I know, I saw Nas with JAY-Z."

"I felt, you know abandoned, I felt… like, wow."

It all seems to be water under the bridge now, however, as Fat Joe signed a management

deal with Jay's Roc Nation in January 2017.

Birdman

On an episode of Tropical TV back in 2009, Birdman made an appearance to hype up his

music and crew, including Lil' Wayne.

When the interviewer asked his thoughts on Jay-Z being voted the No. 1 MC by MTV, he

didn't mince words.

"I don't think he's the No. 1 MC.

Wayne's the best, he do the most and he makes the most money."

WHY YOUR INTUITION MAY BE THE HIGHEST FORM OF INTELLIGENCE

Our intuition develops when we are babies, long before are indoctrinated into Newtonian

physics � which largely prohibits us from understanding the quantum world.

Ironically, one of our first intellectual abilities � intuition � may be one of

the greatest forms of intelligence we will ever experience in a �grown-up� world.

In the quantum world, there are no �positions� nor �speed.� These are classical, mechanical

terms for a world that doesn�t really exist.

Yet, as tiny babies we understand how things work without having a clear grasp of certain

intellectual realities.

Psychologists Susan Hespos from Northwestern University, and Renee Baillargeon of University

of Illinois found that this physical intuition kicks in as early as two and a half months,

and other scientists think that intuition is probably present from birth.

Gerd Gigerenzer, a director at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, argues that

intuition is less about suddenly �knowing� the right answer and more about instinctively

understanding what information is unimportant and can thus be discarded, but even if we

have intuition even at birth, one could argue that we have yet to develop the intellectual

capacity to learn which information can be discarded.

Yet innate notions, plus �elaborations� born from watching and interacting with the

world, add up to a sort of �na�ve physics� that we all grasp before having a single physics

lesson.

Max Born, who received the 1954 Nobel Prize for his contributions to the foundation of

quantum mechanics, felt that our minds just weren�t up to the task of �intuiting�

quantum physics.

As he wrote in �Atomic Physics,� first published in English in 1935,

�The ultimate origin of the difficulty lies in the fact (or philosophical principle) that

we are compelled to use the words of common language when we wish to describe a phenomenon,

not by logical or mathematical analysis, but by a picture appealing to the imagination.

Common language has grown by everyday experience and can never surpass these limits.�

Aristotle�s 2,300-year-old theories, in which heavy objects fall faster than light

ones, and objects in motion ease to a stop unless you keep pushing them have been our

assumption until now, but in the quantum world there is no friction.

Objects can appear and disappear merely with our observation of them.

Some of Our Biggest Life Decisions are Based on Intuition

The fact that our minds have evolved past avoiding being eaten so that we can also appreciate

a great symphony or a breath-taking sunset might also account for the development of

our intuition � or be explained further by quantum consciousness.

Gerd Gigerenzer, author of the book Gut Feelings: The Intelligence of the Unconscious, says

that he is both intuitive and rational.

He states,

�In my scientific work, I have hunches.

I can�t explain always why I think a certain path is the right way, but I need to trust

it and go ahead.

I also have the ability to check these hunches and find out what they are about.

That�s the science part.

Now, in private life, I rely on instinct.

For instance, when I first met my wife, I didn�t do computations.

Nor did she.�

In fact, some of our biggest life decisions are based on a �hunch� and not some Newtonian

calculation of reality.

And that hunch is often extremely successful at telling us what to do in many varied, hands-on,

real-life applications.

Why?

Quantum Computing Merely Mimics Quantum Intuition It all makes more sense once we understand

the latest research into quantum computing.

Regular computers use bits for processing.

Everything is either a 1 or a 0, and from this foundation all letters and numbers can

be created, and mathematical and logical problems solved.

When an atom replaces the bit, however, a 1 or 0 can be both a 1 or 0 at the same time.

This means that complex mathematical calculations which might take millions of bits, and take

up tons of storage space in a regular computer, can be compacted and done simultaneously,

thus freeing up memory, and performing calculations at an unbelievable speed.

However, out innate intuition may work in the very same way � tapping into the Quantum

Intelligence that permeates all things.

If the Universe is indeed fractal, and connected and holographic, it would mean that a single

atom contains the information of every Universe.

Since we are nothing more than a compilation of atoms (the wave-particle phenomenon notwithstanding)

then we can tap into a quantum information/energy field.

To use quantum computing terms, we could intuitively process large pieces of information or complex

information in the blink of an eye because we are utilizing this field rather than some

clunky 1s and 0s.

Physicists Use Human Intuition to Develop Better Quantum Computing

Interestingly, and quite a slap in the face to Max Born who proposed we were incapable

of quantum intuition, physicists recently used human intuition and intelligence to create

a better quantum computer.

150,000 people played a game called Quantum Moves several million times to help physicists

to best determine real-world questions in their field.

Just playing a game, players solved real research questions in quantum physics, and found solutions

that were better than trained physicists or state-of-the-art algorithms could find.

That�s worth a moment of reflection.

While this proves human intelligence is still better than AI, it also suggests that intuition

is likely derived from the quantum field, of which we are all a part.

After all, Markle's dog Guy has already joined her in the UK.

Markle's other dog, Bogart, is currently staying with close friends in Canada.

Rumor has it that Bogart is too old to fly and may never join Markle across the pond,

but only time will tell.

We can't wait to see what Markle and Harry do with their gorgeous Nottingham Cottage

(or what stunning gown she'll surely be wearing on her wedding day).

Artificial Neural Networks: Demystified - Duration: 10:07.

The first time I heard about neural networks I was 11 or something.

I saw an article on a popular tech magazine that said scanners now use neural networks

to recognize characters.

Naively, I thought they utilized actual biological neurons.

When I told my mom about it she said if they use anything biological then you need to feed

it.

Does the scanner consume sugar or sth?

I mean, she was right.

But we don't feed our scanners sugar, do we?

Many years later I figured out that what they used was nothing but a mathematical model.

So what's so neural about them?

These models are called neural networks because they are loosely inspired by biological neural

networks.

Artificial neural networks consist of artificial neurons, each one of which resembles a biological

neuron in the sense that it receives signals from other neurons, accumulates the signal

where each input has a different weight, and fires if the signal is strong enough.

Although artificial neural networks draw some inspiration from biological models, modern

computer science research in neural networks focuses more on building useful models rather

than understanding the brain and modeling it accurately.

Understanding how the brain works is a very interesting field of research too, but we

will not focus on that in this series.

To model a neural network, let's start with a single neuron.

An artificial neuron takes the inputs x0 through xn, multiplies them with weights w0 through

wn, and sums the products to produce the output y.

We can express this operation as a simple matrix multiplication.

Assume that the weights are stored in a row matrix w transpose and the inputs are stored

in a column matrix x.

The output of the neuron is simply the multiplication of these two.

Linear algebra recap: to multiply these matrices we multiply x0 with w0, x1 with w1, and x2

with w2 and we sum these products.

So why do we do this?

What we are trying to accomplish here is to approximate a function.

A linear function in this example.

Given a set of (x, y) pairs, our goal is to find such weights w0, w1, and w3 that fits

the data we have the best.

For example, we can represent the function y=2x using a single neuron with a single input

with linear activation, meaning that the output is merely a product of the input and the weight.

However, the functions that we want to approximate might not be as simple as y=2x.

We can learn more complex functions by using a network of these neurons, where the outputs

of a set of neurons are fed into another set of neurons as inputs.

Let's take a look at a common type of neural network: a multi-layer perceptron, which consists

of layers of neurons.

These type of neural networks are called feedforward networks because the data flows in one direction

from the input layer to the outputs.

The first layer is the input layer, where each neuron is connected to an input variable.

The last layer is the output layer, which has as many neurons as the output variables.

For example, if this is a regression problem where we try to predict the current value

of a car, x0, x1, and x2 might be the year, milage, and the price of the car when it was

new, where y0 is the predicted current value.

Or if this is a classification problem where we want to classify indoor and outdoor pictures,

x0 through xn can be the pixel values, and y0 and y1 can be the indoor and outdoor neurons.

The layers we have between the inputs and output layers are called hidden layers.

These layers learn to produce outputs that are useful for the next layers.

They are called hidden layers because we don't explicitly specify what happens at these layers.

The learning algorithm decides how to use these layers to approximate a function.

Each hidden layer tries to make the input more useful for the next layer.

The number of these layers gives the depth of the model --that's where the term deep

learning comes from-- whereas the number of neurons per layer gives the width of the model.

Both increasing the width and depth increases model complexity, which allows for learning

more complex patterns.

Or does it?

Each one of these neurons is basically taking a weighted sum of their inputs.

Isn't a weighted sum of linear functions also a linear function?

Let's simplify this network by taking a slice from this network and see what happens.

The input gets multiplied by w0, w1, w2, and w3, and we get our output y0.

We can re-write this equation as y = x0 wc, where wc is the multiplication of all these

weights.

Then we could represent this function using a single neuron.

Basically, if we don't introduce some sort of nonlinearities between these neurons, the

entire network collapses into a single linear function.

That's why we use non-linear activation functions at the outputs of neurons, meaning that we

pass the output of a neuron through a non-linear function before we feed it to the next one.

Doing so introduces non-linearities in our network.

This non-linear function can be the sigmoid function, which squashes its input into a

range between 0 and 1.

The sigmoid function is usually not ideal for deep models but we'll come back to that

later.

Let's rewrite the function that our model represents, now with the non-linearities in

between neurons...

As you can see, it no longer reduces to a single layer model.

This enables our model to represent non-linear functions.

Let's run a simulation on TensorFlow playground to observe the impact of the non-linear activations.

First, let's try to classify linearly separable data without using nonlinearities.

The model learns a decision boundary without any trouble.

How about classifying these data points that lie on a swiss-roll shaped manifold.

Seems like the decision boundary is still linear despite having several hidden layers.

Now let's try again using a non-linear activation function this time.

It's learning non-linear decision boundaries now, but what do we actually mean by learning?

Let's go back to the previous example.

The weights, w0, w1, and w2, are the trainable parameters.

These parameters are learned from training data.

The values of these parameters are what we keep to deploy our model.

Let's talk about how we train a model to learn these weights.

Training a neural network is essentially an optimization problem, where our goal is to

minimize a loss function.

The loss function tells our model how well it's doing on training data so that the weights

can be updated towards decreasing the loss and increasing the future performance as a

consequence.

What we mean by training is simply finding the weights that minimize our loss function.

For example, if our goal is to predict a continuous-valued variable we can use the mean squared error

or the mean absolute error as our loss function.

The mean squared error is simply the mean of the squared differences between the predicted

and actual values of output variables.

And the mean absolute error is the mean of absolute differences between these actual

and predicted values.

The loss function can be anything as long as it's differentiable, and we'll see why

soon.

We'll go back to loss functions later.

Let's have a very simple example to understand how we train neural networks first.

Let's say we have these data points and we want to learn a function that generates similar

data points.

Let's use a single neuron with a single weight and use mean squared error as our loss function.

For simplicity let's omit the bias term and the non-linear activation function.

First step: we initialize our weights to small random values.

In this example, we have a single weight w, which is "randomly" initialized to .5.

Then we evaluate the output given a data sample.

The data is usually shuffled before training, so let's pick x = 2 as our first training

sample.

Plugging in x, we get y = 1, which is not so close to the actual value of y, which was

4.

So, how do we fix this?

How do we tell the model to update the weight towards the right direction?

We picked the mean squared error as our loss function.

Since we are evaluating the samples one by one, it's simply the squared difference between

the actual and predicted values of y.

We take the derivative of the error with respect to the weight.

Then, we use the derivative to define an update rule,

which tells us how to change the weight to make the predictions better.

Here, alpha is the learning rate, which specifies the magnitude of the update at every iteration.

It's a common practice to decay the learning rate gradually.

Which is actually analogous to how humans learn.

Kids learn faster but adults are less gullible since they are exposed to more training data.

For simplicity, let's fix the learning rate at 0.1 in this example.

Now that we have our update rule let's iterate over the data.

We get a data sample and we update the weight by evaluating the update rule.

We do this until the loss converges to an acceptable point, which is the global minimum

0 in this example.

This optimization algorithm is called Stochastic Gradient Descent, there are some tricks to

improve this optimization process but this is how it works in its plain form.

In this example, we iterated over the samples one-by-one.

This is called online learning.

Training a model this way can sometimes lead to noisy weight updates and slow down the

convergence.

Alternatively, we could use all data points at once and average the loss over all data

points at every iteration.

That's called batch learning and the iterative optimization algorithm that we used earlier

is called gradient descent when we use the entire dataset for each update.

However, in many modern applications, this is not a feasible approach since the dataset

is usually too big to fit into memory.

Even if the entire dataset fits the memory, it might still be preferable not to use the

entire data at every step.

In the previous example, our loss function was a nice and smooth convex function.

Here's how the overall loss roughly looks like when plotted as a function of the weight.

This would be an ideal case for the full-batch gradient descent.

However, this is hardly the case for real-life applications.

In practice, the w can be much higher dimensional, and the loss manifold is unlikely to be perfectly

convex.

Many applications adopt an approach between these two: pick a mini-batch that consists

of a number of samples and average the loss over the samples in the mini-batch at every

iteration.

The number of samples in a mini-batch is called the batch size.

Now we know what training a neural network means and how to train a single neuron with

a single trainable parameter.

But how do we train networks with many more layers and many more trainable parameters?

It's not as complicated as one might think it is.

In the next video, we will talk about how is training deep neural networks different

from training shallow ones and intuitively explain how we train these models.
