The Arnold Press, or 180 degree rotational presses, whatever you call it

It's the same movement. For this one you can see I'm starting with my palms facing inward

towards my chest. Typically when you perform an overhead

press with dumbbells, your palms are facing outwards and you're just pressing up in

that same plane of movement. The benefits of this one is it adds a new dynamic into

the exercise. Performing it this way works a lot of our posterior deltoids, the

medial or lateral deltoid, and our rotator cuff by bringing it out and

then straight into that press. You'll see within this movement that I really am performing

this under a controlled temple. Slowly up, full extension of your arms, this is where I can focus on

squeezing and engaging my deltoids. So you give them a nice flex up at the top

I slowly resist them back down. the weights aren't dropping down, I'm controlling it. This is

part of the exercise and as I do so, rotate in, and you'll see by doing that

it brings a lot more stress into that lateral and posterior deltoid. So a great

exercise that kind of combines two movements in one. More of a compound

exercise, I'll go as heavy as I can including rest pauses, assisted spots -

I'll have my training partner spot me so I can push pass that threshold, and then a drop set

Once I hit my point of failure, I'm going to drop the weight down about twenty or thirty

percent, and do what I've got left in me. So, three working sets here progressively

building up the weights, my shoulders are nicely warmed up, now I can move on

and started to focus more on an isolation exercise for the posterior rear deltoid..

Three different variations for exercise

number two. The focus is on the posterior (the back deltoid), which for many including myself

tends to be the weaker of the three deltoid heads. If you think about, it any chest press

movements, or overhead presses, already involves a lot of the anterior deltoid, it's the

largest of the 3, so this one gets worked a lot in many different movements, the lateral as well,

the medial delt. Anytime we do this, or we're doing presses - that gets involved too so the

rear deltoid only really gets focused on when we do movements like this, when we

take the arms behind the back.

You can see I start out on dumbbells. For this one, I like

as heavy as I can, keeping good form, and you'll notice to my arm movement as well

I'm not trying to fully extend my arm out straight. I've always got a slight bend in the elbow

The reason for that is if I start to extend my arm out like that, my tricep becomes

activated. If I keep my elbow slightly bent, more of that effort, that workload is placed

on the back deltoid. So that's the focus for doing the bent-over dumbbells.

I'm sat back, hips back, knees soft, and my upper torso about 40-45 degrees to an angle on

the floor. This way I get a lot more variation with how I move my arms

Even so that I can add a drop set, you'll see that I dropped down from a heavier weight, just to

a little bit lighter one. With my hands, normally I'll open them like this in

the neutral position (palms facing inwards) And I add a rotation as I start to open

my arm out, I'll rotate my thumb downwards I just feel that it

activates a little bit more of the rear deltoid. After dumbbells, I'll perform some

reverse cable flys. The thing I like about this is the range of motion. I've got

tension kept on the back deltoid throughout the entire range of motion, which is

not the same as when performing with free-weights. So that's the key difference

free-weights - you've got a much heavier load at the end of the pivotal point - the

shoulder. Cables, because of the way the weight stack is setup, you've got a more consistent

clean, constant level of tension throughout that full range of motion, and then finally we're

going to work independently on each shoulder, and do a bent-over, sort of under

chest rear fly. For this I feel I get an even longer range of motion because I

can stretch out that delt all the way back, which is hard to do on dumbbells and even

cables together. So three different options there, each one has its own significant on the rear

deltoid. mix it up, try all three or incorporating it into a tri-set

Rear delts are feeling really pumped, now let's move on. We're going to finish off just a little

bit of work on that lateral or medial deltoid.

Finishing up with exercise number three: Lateral dumbbell raises for this one. You can see

I'm performing them seated - I feel that gives me a much more stricter movement. I'm

not going as heavy as I might if i'm standing, but notice my arm position too,

I'm keeping close to 90 degree bend at my elbow. So it's my elbow and I'm trying to push up.

Imagine if you've got someone behind you, and they're pushing your elbows down with their

hands. It's that movement, that force that you want to try to push up against

Therefore all of that work is done of the medial deltoid, of course the anterior & posterior; the front of the rear

deltoid, of course come into play, but the focus is primarily on that middle deltoid

head, so I'm pushing my elbows up, as I finish, I'm trying to keep my elbows in line

with my shoulders, I don't want them to be too far forwards or squeezing back like this, everything in

alignment. you can see as well, my wrist, elbow, and shoulder, all in that same plane.

All of the movement originates pretty much in that medial deltoid. 10-12 repetitions here,

maybe a drop set, because this is towards the end of my workout, I simply

just don't have the strength or the energy that I did for those first two

exercises. So more drop sets here, maybe some more rest pauses, or a circuit.

Speaking of drop set, you can see that I went from a seated lateral raise

to a standing one, I dropped the weight back about fifty percent, and a few things here -because I'm

now standing I can perform them in front, to the side, or behind, and thats simply because

the deltoid muscle is one big pennate muscle, it's a kind of cross-fiber, diagonal muscle, so

don't get stuck into the notion that you need to work everything in one plane, especially

with shoulders and if you're standing, work to the front, work to the side, and if you

can, work behind - even going as far as using a cable for the lateral raise

so that you can get that nice pull behind.

Okay, there we have it: three main exercises all of which work

really well for helping to develop all of the three deltoid heads, and as I

said, these can be performed in a circuit, one after the other with minimal rest in

between, or like I've done today, each exercise three or four sets at most

aim for that 10-12 rep and focus on your execution, your tempo, and feeling

that muscle work. Alright guys, make sure you like, subscribe, comment

I've got videos coming literary every week, and find out more on my Facebook videos, see you guys soon, take care...

Celebrating Voyager's 40 Years in Space with Ed Stone - Duration: 4:21.

I came to Caltech in 1964.

I came as a postdoc and then became a faculty member in 1967,

setting up a research group in space physics with Robbie Vogt.

Then in 1972, I was asked to spend part of my time at JPL as chief scientist

for this new mission, which was called at that time MJS '77, but which became Voyager.

* We have liftoff of the Titan Centaur, carrying the first of two Voyager spacecraft

to extend man's senses farther into the solar system than ever before. *

I hesitated because I was a fairly young professor at that point,

and I still had a lot of research I wanted to do. We had some discussions about how to focus

on the science leadership, and I felt I could continue my research here on campus,

working with students and building instruments; some students actually worked on Voyager with me.

Our first encounters with Jupiter were in 1979.

The next encounter was Voyager 1 with Saturn in Nov. 1980, followed in Aug. 1981 by Voyager 2.

After the Saturn flyby, we had a nice cruising period until 1986 for Uranus,

and so I did, in fact, teach Physics 1 again.

The wonderful thing about planetary flybys is there's a lot of freshman physics that you can talk about

- the encounters, the trajectories. What we see often has some very basic physics

you can talk about. I found a wonderful way to include in the classical physics that you get in Physics 1

some relevant things that are happening now.

Caltech is really a unique place. It has the community that you expect

from a small college, but it's doing really major world-class research.

Caltech founded JPL, and then when NASA was formed in 1958,

it became owned by NASA and run by Caltech. So that makes it possible for a professor here

to actually go to JPL on a part-time basis for an extended period of time,

because it's all the same university.

* The event which really altered our view and our expectation for the rest of the mission

was the discovery of the volcanoes on Io. *

When we saw Io, we had never seen anything like it. It had these large features. There was

this heart-shaped pattern, all these black spots.

We had no idea what we were looking at, even though we had had all these hints.

As we got to closest approach, the Infrared PI, Rudy Hanel, came in and said

"You know there's some peculiar spectrum here on Io. One possibility is we have a calibration problem.

Or maybe it's a new kind of material, which has this particular temperature profile."

Another was "maybe there's more than one temperature on Io."

We all sat there and listened to this, and not one of us said, "That explains what we're seeing!"

When I went to Optical Navigation, here was this white appendage on Io.

Occasionally I'll have little sketches here and there.

Here it is. There's Io, and see that little thing I drew there?

This was the sunset line, and you could see this bright thing up above the dark surface.

She had done a lot of work - Linda Morabito - and was convinced it was not just

another satellite that happened to get in the same field of view.

A couple days later, Rudy Hanel came in and said "We have hot spots, which are lava lakes!"

It's really a remarkable story, how hard it was for us to take the leap

that there could be a small moon with 10 times more volcanic activity than Earth.

And that really opened up our eyes that we were in for a mission that was going to really stretch us

in terms of our understanding of planets

and understanding of Earth.

I think time after time we just found that nature was much more inventive than our models.

Usually, it's the things that we don't anticipate which turn out to be the most important.

It's just that we didn't know that they were out there, whatever they were.

THE 2 BEST SURFING SPOTS IN MIYAZAKI JAPAN - Duration: 14:48.

How is the surf today?

It's pretty good

Oh yeah?

Chest to shoulder height surf

With head height sets

We're wondering whether we should go to Akaehama...

or it's better at Kaeda

near Aoshima beach

Did you see the ocean?

when you landed?

yep we saw it!

which side did you look at?

the right side

Akae side?

yep!

Was there anyone in there?

Probably about 10 surfers?

Oh then I'm sure it's good surf there

Hey guys, I'm back in Miyazaki. That's twice in three months

I came back to me to Miyazaki this time because

we want to experience Miyazaki when it's not a major holiday in Japan

So it's quite empty which is awesome

Last time we came in golden week, it was like filled so many people here

It was like crazy. It was super packed

Now it's just before summer holidays so

a lot of people probably coming like next week or the week after

so I have decided to come this week just before August

There's also 2 typhoons that's currently south of Japan

and it's slowly moving towards Miyazaki

So I'm hoping that those two typhoons will generate some pretty big swells

But hopefully it doesn't come too close or else

It's gonna be like too big of a wave

like double overhead which is what it is now in Tokyo

which is too much for me

During around this time in Japan there's a lot of typhoons and

Usually in September October is where it's typhoon season

so you get like one like almost every week

So luckily this time it's just off the coast of Japan so it's not coming here

Which is good! Good swells

Last time I did a lot of touristy stuff

but this time I'm just going to go surfing

so hopefully i have a lot more surfing clips

That's cool

Sometimes it's really tough holding a Go Pro

Because I can't breath

Yeah doesn't look like you can concentrate on surfing

Yeah sometimes I can't

But if you get used to it it's fun!

do you always use this when you surf?

only when I travel

You're from Tokyo right?

Yep

You are with ...

Yeah he is Koji

I'm Ken

I'm Ayako

Ayako

Nice to meet you!

Nice to meet you too!

When it's break time.. It's ORION BEER time!

But I think I'm getting sunburned because the sun's just like over there

and I keep facing there

I think my back is like ...

Really dark

I wish you would like change position, so I can get a perfect tan

Don't know if you can see my leg

It's pretty different color

So when you come to Miyazaki you have to rent a car

Because it's like no trains to get to the surf spots or buses

So it's the most convenient way to get around in Miyazaki

We've entered a Toyota HIACE which you see behind me

It's this van which is pretty awesome

I'll put the link in the description below

and basically this

rental car just made for surfers

now why I say this is because they have

Bucket for you to get changed in

they give you water tanks for your to shower afterwards and they also have like

Surfboard roof racks for your surfboards

the Toyota HIACE costs about 6000 yen a day

So we're staying here for 5 days 4 nights

so it's going to cost roughly 30,000 yen

which is roughly about 300 - 350 USD give and take

It's pretty cheap and it comes with insurance as well

and I think it's more expensive if you only rent for three days

So anything that's above three days is cheaper

So just check out the link that I'm gonna post and

Yeah, you just basically call them up and I think you have to reserve

online and then yeah

It's good to see you again!

You got darker!

There's no one here but you guys

There's no one else but you guys so

Your rooms are on the second floor

I went fishing on a boat

did you catch anything?

I caught a SABA (mackerel)

Do you know?

Yes!

One of the things I love about Miyazaki is the food

We're going to eat this charcoal chicken

Well hopefully they sell it

The place is called TORIMA

and it's very close to where we're staying

We're staying at Aoshima pension again

You can check out my

Miyazaki blog vlog I did before

About the location

Charcoal chicken is really good

It's from Kagoshima I think

You must be happy

You get to drink beer that you love!

There's 2 of us

Please sit in the middle

Thank god!

Okay, so today I'm gonna be surfing in this spot called

O-GURA-GA-HAMA

Which is in the Northern part of Miyazaki.

It's actually in Hyuga city

it's a little bit strange because

Miyazaki has a long stretch of road which is to the beach

and it leads to here

Everytime I check the surf conditions and stuff

this has the best number of points

and every time I ask my surfer friends

who travel a lot around Japan, they say that

Hyuga and here is probably like the one of the best surfing spots in Miyazaki

because the conditions are always good

and there's always wave so we're gonna go check it out and

There's only like 10 people in there

Which is like awesome

and I think the typhoon swells are still coming in which is good

This morning I tried surfing down in Aoshima

And it was just like no waves so we drove about

1 hour and 20 minutes from Aoshima to get here

so if you take the

Higashi Kyushu Kosoku which is the east Kyushu expressway

it takes about an hour and 20 to 30 minutes

you can also take the non expressway which takes a little bit longer

maybe about 20 minutes longer

Maybe it's here?

It's here!

Because I want to eat this!

Eggs benedict

Wow, this is a really nice hotel

I should stay here at least once but it's pretty expensive

Like I saw the package last time

for 5 days 4 nights it was about

200,000 yen which is about 2k

which is crazy

but I guess you pay for the luxury

So I mean if you want to come to Miyazaki for surfing

and it's the first time

and you have money to blow.. just check out

Aoshima ANA hotel

Excuse me but you don't sell Eggs Benedict anymore?

Yeah... this is all we've got today

I see

Fish and chips and ...

Mango Mojito

They don't have eggs benedict

They don't?

I think it's only for breakfast

Wow I haven't had fish and chips for so long

It's really good fish and chips

haven't had fish and chips for like

since I've been in Japan for like 5 or 6 years

It's really good

Just to give you an update on my trip

It's currently my 4th day

I'm leaving tomorrow

which I'm very sad

So there's two typhoons that I mentioned

that's currently one south of Japan the other one is on the west side

So the one that's south that I thought was going to come to Miyazaki

Is actually moving away from Japan

So this morning we checked Aoshima beach

and because we thought the swells from the typhoon would be coming in

but it was almost flat

But during the day it's going to become bigger and bigger

So we went and checked Akaehama

which was like crazy

It's about head height to overhead height surf

I wasn't in there for like an hour maybe

It was growing too big

growing bigger and bigger

and there were only a few people in there

And I think they were locals or like hardcore pro Surfers

It was really tough conditions

Thank you!

See you next time!

Bye bye

Well, I'm on my way home now back to tokyo

So I hope you guys enjoyed my vlog

and as always please give us thumbs up!

and subscribe to my channel if you haven't

If you really like my video

please remember to share on the social network

I'll see you guys next time

Conditions may be not as good as yesterday

but umm the typhoon is still south

I think from tomorrow afternoon

it's going to get bigger and bigger

in the morning it could be pretty small

maybe we might come here again

Hyuga always has waves

well here anyway

Horror Movies That Will Blow Everyone Away In 2018 - Duration: 7:12.

Hollywood lined up lots of high-profile horror projects in 2017, from a revival of the Saw

franchise to a creepy new take on Stephen King's It.

And in 2018, there seems to be plenty more where that came from.

Strap in, because the future looks dark in the best, possible way.

A Quiet Place

Plot details for A Quiet Place are being kept tightly under wraps in advance of its April

2018 release, but screenwriters Scott Beck and Bryan Woods have been on an upward trajectory

ever since they earned a top fifty spot in Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's Project Greenlight

competition.

While their 2015 debut feature Nightlight wasn't particularly well-received, their spec

script for this new project was good enough to be purchased outright by Paramount — and

to attract Hollywood power couple John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, who will be onscreen together

for the first time… unless you count this Oscar-worthy performance on late night TV.

"You're not married anymore."

"John?"

Slender Man

Veteran TV director Sylvain White will helm this adaptation of one of the most well-known

internet memes of all time.

The Slender Man has stalked the Web since 2009, when a Photoshop contest produced a

picture of the tall, thin, faceless stalker of hapless children.

Sony/Screen Gems has slated Slender Man for release on May 18, 2018.

And while details are scant on the film's plot, lovers of creepy internet memes have

a pretty good idea what to expect.

Meg

Meg is a joint American/Chinese production whose title doesn't give away a whole lot

— unless you know that "Meg" is short for Megalodon, a giant prehistoric shark.

The film's international cast will portray a deep-sea research team that comes nose-to-nose

with the terrifying creature when their submersible craft is disabled.

Jason Statham stars as a Navy captain and expert diver, with Rainn Wilson and Ruby Rose

in supporting roles.

The Chinese lead, Li Bingbing, is a veteran actress who you might recognize from the most

recent installments of the Transformers and Resident Evil series.

We'll have to wait until August 10, 2018 to get a look at Meg — but that look will be

in 3D IMAX and will involve Jason Statham fighting a giant shark, so it should be worth

the wait.

Cadaver

Shay Mitchell makes the jump from TV's Pretty Little Liars to big-screen horror with Cadaver,

an intriguing project also starring Castle's Stana Katic.

Mitchell stars as a morgue technician and disgraced former cop, whose late-night shifts

take a turn for the sinister when she receives a badly brutalized corpse.

Kinda like this:

"You'll see human heads without bodies…"

Audiences will have to wait until August 24, 2018 to get a look at Cadaver.

But director Diederik Van Rooijen is already onto his next project — he's been tapped

to handle an upcoming remake of Alfred Hitchcock's classic The Birds.

Halloween

Reboots of classic horror franchises haven't exactly been cinematic gold in recent years,

with new installments of Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th leaving fans wondering

if these franchises were better off dead.

Since Rob Zombie remade Halloween in 2007 and did a sequel to it in 2009, we understand

if you're not too excited about a new Halloween, but here's the thing, you should be, for one

key reason.

"This is my moment!"

Eastbound & Down star Danny McBride and producer David Gordon Green came together to work on

the new film, which will serve as a sequel to the first two films:

"I think tension is what it's all about.

Keeping that tension and keeping people's stomach in knots."

Michael Myers will return to theaters on October 19, 2018, just in time for the scariest night

of the year.

The Strangers 2

The Strangers was a surprise hit in 2008, and not many fans were expecting the second

installment — which was announced way back in 2009 — to actually see the light of day.

But a decade after the first film hit theaters, it's coming, with original director Johannes

Roberts and writer Bryan Bertino on board.

Christina Hendricks leads the cast of the film, which has an as-yet-undetermined release

date in 2018.

What we do know is that it reportedly takes place at a trailer park in the middle of nowhere

during a power outage, where an appearance by the malevolent Sackhead and Pin-Up Girl

would definitely be something to scream about.

Nosferatu

The Witch is widely considered to be among the scariest films of 2015, a unique and ambitious

debut by director Robert Eggers.

And for his follow-up, Eggers isn't scaling back on his ambition.

He'll be helming a remake of the seminal 1922 horror classic Nosferatu, an undertaking only

attempted once before — in 1979, by acclaimed German filmmaker Werner Herzog.

Eggers is a lifelong fan of the original film, and has even mounted a stage production, twice.

It's safe to say the remake is in very good hands — and if The Witch is any indication,

fans might be in for the creepiest vampire flick in years.

Abruptio

Buffy the Vampire Slayer's James Marsters stars in this intriguing film, playing a down-on-his-luck

regular Joe who wakes up one morning with a bomb implanted in his neck.

And there's one hell of a twist:

"It's the sickest stuff you can imagine, but they're all gonna be puppets."

That's right: all the film's roles will be performed by life-sized, realistic latex puppets.

And it's got a hell of a supporting cast, including comedian-turned-horror mastermind

Jordan Peele.

Abruptio will hit theaters sometime in 2018 — and we can only hope we're ready.

Winchester

Now this looks really cool, Winchester is inspired by the true and very bizarre story

of firearm heiress Sarah Winchester, whose mansion is the stuff of legend.

"A house shrouded in mystery and speculation.

A house that has been the source of one of the most unusual legends in California history."

Winchester supposedly believed that the ghosts of people killed by her family's firearms

would haunt her forever — unless she never stopped building.

Rotating shifts of carpenters worked on the mansion until Winchester's death in 1922,

creating an endless series of rooms, nooks and hallways.

"There's odd little corridors that maybe once went somewhere… but the unusual never

really stops in this house."

The upcoming film is a supernatural period piece, written and directed by identical twins

Peter and Michael Spierig, who were behind the 2009 sci-fi/horror thriller Daybreakers.

But key to the project is the casting of Helen Mirren in the lead role, bringing the kind

of acting chops that can elevate any material.

Winchester is slated for release on February 23, 2018.

Mother Teresa Exposed She and the Vatican Were Even Worse Than W - Duration: 12:06.

Mother Teresa Exposed She and the Vatican Were Even Worse Than We Could Have Imagined

First Christopher Hitchens took her down, then we learned that her faith wasnt as

strong as we thought, and now a new study from the Universit de Montral is poised

to completely destroy what shreds are left of Mother Teresas reputation.

She was the winner of the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, was beatified and is well on her way

to becoming a saint, and shes universally admired.

As Wikipedia notes:

[She was] named 18 times in the yearly Gallups most admired man and woman poll as one of

the ten women around the world that Americans admired most.

In 1999, a poll of Americans ranked her first in Gallups List of Most Widely Admired

People of the 20th Century.

In that survey, she out-polled all other volunteered answers by a wide margin, and was in first

place in all major demographic categories except the very young.

The criticisms of Agnes Gonxha, as she was christened, have been growing for a long time.

I wasnt aware of them until I read Christopher Hitchenss cleverly titled book, The Missionary

Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice, which I found deeply disturbing.

The book is polemic at Hitchenss best, and though the facts were surprising, he was

never sued and his accusations were never refutednor even rebutted.

In light of that, I accepted Mother Teresa as a deeply flawed person.

In its criticism section of her biography, Wikipedia summarizes the growing opprobrium

related to her extreme love of suffering (that is, the suffering of her patients),

her refusal to provide adequate medical care, her association with (and financial support

from) shady characters, and her treatment of her nuns.

Now a paper is about to appear (its not online yet) that is apparently peer-reviewed,

and that expands the list of Mother Teresas malfeasances.

Lest you think this is atheist hype, the summary below is from an official press release by

the Universit de Montral.

The myth of altruism and generosity surrounding Mother Teresa is dispelled in a paper by Serge

Larive and Genevieve Chenard of University of Montreals Department of Psychoeducation

and Carole Snchal of the University of Ottawas Faculty of Education.

The paper will be published in the March issue of the journal Studies in Religion/Sciences

religieuses and is an analysis of the published writings about Mother Teresa.

Like the journalist and author Christopher Hitchens, who is amply quoted in their analysis,

the researchers conclude that her hallowed imagewhich does not stand up to analysis

of the factswas constructed, and that her beatification was orchestrated by an effective

media relations campaign.

While looking for documentation on the phenomenon of altruism for a seminar on ethics,

one of us stumbled upon the life and work of one of Catholic Churchs most celebrated

woman and now part of our collective imaginationMother Teresawhose real name was Agnes Gonxha,

says Professor Larive, who led the research.

The description was so ecstatic that it piqued our curiosity and pushed us to research

further.

As a result, the three researchers collected 502 documents on the life and work of Mother

Teresa.

After eliminating 195 duplicates, they consulted 287 documents to conduct their analysis, representing

96% of the literature on the founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity (OMC).

Facts debunk the myth of Mother Teresa.

Serge Larive and his colleagues also cite a number of problems not take into account

by the Vatican in Mother Teresas beatification process, such as her rather dubious way

of caring for the sick, her questionable political contacts, her suspicious management of the

enormous sums of money she received, and her overly dogmatic views regarding, in particular,

abortion, contraception, and divorce.

The release levels three types of accusations against mother Teresa and her supporters (quotes

are direct, and I dont mind extensive excerpting since its a press release):

1. The woman was in love with suffering and simply didnt take care of her charges,

many of whom fruitlessly sought medical care.

At the time of her death, Mother Teresa had opened 517 missions welcoming the poor

and sick in more than 100 countries. The missions have been described as homes for the dying

by doctors visiting several of these establishments in Calcutta.

Two-thirds of the people coming to these missions hoped to a find a doctor to treat

them, while the other third lay dying without receiving appropriate care. The doctors observed

a significant lack of hygiene, even unfit conditions, as well as a shortage of actual

care, inadequate food, and no painkillers.

The problem is not a lack of moneythe Foundation created by Mother Teresa has raised

hundreds of millions of dollarsbut rather a particular conception of suffering and death:

There is something beautiful in seeing the poor accept their lot, to suffer it like

Christs Passion. The world gains much from their suffering, was her reply to criticism,

cites the journalist Christopher Hitchens. Nevertheless, when Mother Teresa required

palliative care, she received it in a modern American hospital.

2. She was tightfisted about helping others, seequestered money donated for her work, and

took money from dictators.

Mother Teresa was generous with her prayers but rather miserly with her foundations

millions when it came to humanitys suffering.

During numerous floods in India or following the explosion of a pesticide plant in Bhopal,

she offered numerous prayers and medallions of the Virgin Mary but no direct or monetary

aid.

On the other hand, she had no qualms about accepting the Legion of Honour and a grant

from the Duvalier dictatorship in Haiti. Millions of dollars were transferred to the MCOs

various bank accounts, but most of the accounts were kept secret, Larive says.

Given the parsimonious management of Mother Theresas works, one may ask where

the millions of dollars for the poorest of the poor have gone?'

3. She was deliberately promoted by BBC journalist Malcolm Muggeridge (a fellow anti-abortionist),

and her beatification was based on phony miracles.

In 1969, [Muggeridge] made a eulogistic film of the missionary, promoting her by attributing

to her the first photographic miracle, when it should have been attributed to the

new film stock being marketed by Kodak.

Afterwards, Mother Teresa travelled throughout the world and received numerous awards, including

the Nobel Peace Prize.

In her acceptance speech, on the subject of Bosnian women who were raped by Serbs and

now sought abortion, she said: I feel the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion,

because it is a direct war, a direct killingdirect murder by the mother herself.

Following her death, the Vatican decided to waive the usual five-year waiting period

to open the beatification process. [JAC: As I recall, it took only a year.] The miracle

attributed to Mother Theresa was the healing of a woman, Monica Besra, who had been suffering

from intense abdominal pain.

The woman testified that she was cured after a medallion blessed by Mother Theresa

was placed on her abdomen. Her doctors thought otherwise: the ovarian cyst and the tuberculosis

from which she suffered were healed by the drugs they had given her. The Vatican, nevertheless,

concluded that it was a miracle.

Mother Teresas popularity was such that she had become untouchable for the population,

which had already declared her a saint.

What could be better than beatification followed by canonization of this model to

revitalize the Church and inspire the faithful especially at a time when churches are empty

and the Roman authority is in decline? Larive and his colleagues ask.

All of these echo, substantiate, and expand the criticisms leveled by Hitchens.

But at the end of the press release, the university (and, I presume, the investigators) offer

what I see as a complete sop to those who might be disheartened by the above. I quote

directly:

Positive effect of the Mother Teresa myth

Despite Mother Teresas dubious way of caring for the sick by glorifying their suffering

instead of relieving it, Serge Larive and his colleagues point out the positive effect

of the Mother Teresa myth:

If the extraordinary image of Mother Teresa conveyed in the collective imagination has

encouraged humanitarian initiatives that are genuinely engaged with those crushed by poverty,

we can only rejoice.

It is likely that she has inspired many humanitarian workers whose actions have truly

relieved the suffering of the destitute and addressed the causes of poverty and isolation

without being extolled by the media. Nevertheless, the media coverage of Mother Theresa could

have been a little more rigorous.

A little more rigorous? Now theres an understatement!

Yes, perhaps the inspirational effect of Mother Teresas work is a theoretical possibility,

but has it happened? Is Mother Teresas order now actually doing something to cure

illness?

Whats the evidence that she has inspired people to do something they wouldnt have

done otherwise? Have they found the lost donations?

I will be curious (and a bit surprised) if, when the paper finally comes out, the authors

actually provide some evidence that Mother Teresa has had a substantial positive effect,

much less a net positive effect (dont forget her work against abortion).

This last bit of the press release is there, I think, to stave off the inevitable criticism

that will arise from Bill Donohue and other Catholic cheerleaders when such an idolized

religious figure is brought down. But Catholics should be used to that!

One good thing, despite the sop, is that the faithful wont be able to dismiss this as

easily as they could the criticisms of Hitchens.

(Hes just a militant atheist who hates all religious people.)

This is a peer-reviewed paper written by academics, not a hatchet-job written by an atheist with

strong opinions.

If theres one thing that Catholics should have learned by now, its that their heroes

often have feet of clay.

But thats not surprising in a faith that encourages chastity, sexual repression, and

authoritarianism.

In Mother Teresa it found perhaps its most bizarre flowering: a woman who actually wanted

her charges to suffer because it brought them closer to Jesus.

I ran into Mother Teresa once: we were flying on the same plane, and as I disembarked from

the coach section, she appeared right in front of me as she exited from the first-class section.

Not even wondering why a woman who professed humility was flying first class, I was elated

and gobsmacked, feeling quite fortunate to have run into her.

But I had bought into

the myth, and that was well before the pushback began
