- Down with movies, they've lied to us for too long.
I wanna see people going to trivia on Wednesdays and nothing happens.
Can we make that movie?
-In a world where everything is exactly as it seems to be...
-That was the end of Trivia Wednesday - come back next week!
-Well, that was fun. I'm tired, though, so I'm gonna go home.
- Alright!
-One girl realize... nothing is as she wants it to be.
-Morning, I'm gonna need you to stay late tonight.
-Sure. Um, when you get a minute today, can we talk about that raise?
-Probably not.
-Okay.
- Hey, at least you tried.
Wait, where are you going? You don't live in this building.
You live in a tiny studio across townand — plot twist — your rent is due!
-So, why, in your opinion, is life not like the movies?
-Well, there's no meet cutes. I think those aren't real.
- Oh, like, just like hanging out, meeting someone in the coffee shop.
-Yeah.
-Hey, can I get you anything?
-Nah… *mumbling*
-Hey, did you ever play Angry Birds? It's really fun.
-Why can I never meet anyone cute?
-Actually, maybe there's someone already there.
Maybe it's not in your phone, it's to your left. Let's get dinner.
-I'm sorry, what did you say?
-Nothing, I was coughing.
-In rom-coms, friends are so obsessed with the protagonist's life.
-Yes.
-No one's, like, coming to your apartment,
being like "Girl, I quit my job so we could fix your life!"
-Get you an outfit…! Yeah, no.
-No, that's not real.
-Yeah, actually, I just broke up with Dan.
What are you doing here?
-Um, hello, you just went through a breakup. Of course I'm here.
What are best friends for, if not grand, sweeping, unrealistic
middle-of-the-night gestures that are going to uplift, inspire,
and include an awesome montage set to the latest girl power pop anthem?
-Thank you, I'm really OK, though…
-You have got to get out! No more sad singledom for you!
We're gonna go dancing— And we'll quit our jobs!
Ooh, we'll go to Italy, we'll ride mopeds, we'll meet cute Italian men…
-It's Tuesday night. I have work tomorrow…
I have student loans to pay.
-Me too. I took an Uber here and it was really expensive.
I regret that.
-Real life is never like the movies because it's written
to be perfect and funny and charming.
And you know, real life is ugly sometimes, and real life is sad sometimes.
But, I think real life is better.
-That's a good message, "real life is better"! -Thanks!

it is the only song on our CD

Stephan: The song is inspired by my grandpa
who had to move from his own house
to a retirement home
so the song reminds you
to never stop dreaming
no matter if you are young or old
that's what life is about:
Don't stop dreaming!

On Pace With Shocker Track and Field - Duration: 26:01.
I'm John Wise, Assistant Director of Track and Field
and Cross Country at Wichita State University.
Welcome to On Pace.
This is our first show, and we have a lot to get to.
After the MVC championships, the Shockers qualified
four athletes to the NCAA championships
in Eugene, Oregon, home of TrackTown, USA.
Highlighting the effort for WSU was junior Hunter Veith,
who finished sixth in the decathlon,
with a school record of 7,866 points.
This earned Veith First-Team All-American Honors,
and with the top four placers graduating in 2017,
look for Hunter to be challenging
for a national title in 2018.
On the Women's side, WSU did something it had
never done before, qualifying three ladies to one event,
for the first time in school history.
Nikki Larch-Miller, Breanne Borman, and Gavyn Yetter
all made it to Eugene in the heptathlon.
Borman and Yetter earned Second-Team All-American Honors
by placing 10th and 11th, while Larch-Miller was heading
towards a top eight finish before injuring her ankle
with two events to go.
All three of these ladies made
a major impact on WSU Track and Field,
and qualifying to the NCAA championships together
was a great way to end fantastic careers.
The Shockers once again showed their strength
on the international scene this summer,
as Deja Young won the 100 meters and 200 meters
at the World Paralympic Championships
in London, England in July.
You probably remember Deja's
highly successful 2016 trip to the Rio games,
where she also won the 100 and 200,
and became a Wichita celebrity in the process.
In the past three years, Young has now won
five gold medals and one silver at the World level.
We are certainly excited for her to put on the Shocker
black and yellow for her junior year in 2018.
WSU had Track and Field coach Steve Rainbolt
also spend some time in Europe as Assistant Coach
for Team USA on Thorpe Cup, a dual meet decathlon
that pits America versus Germany.
This is the third straight year Coach Rainbolt
has been part of the Thorpe Cup staff.
As last year, he led Team USA to a win as the head coach
of a team that included former Shocker Austin Bonner.
This year Germany came out on top
with a narrow victory on their home turf in Dusseldorf.
Every year the fall brings enthusiasm and excitement
to campus in the form of Shocker
Track and Field newcomers.
This year's recruiting class brings in over 40
talented athletes from around the United States
as well as the world.
Dozens of state champions and school record holders
will join the Shocker roster highlighted by freshman
Rayvon Allen from Rockwood Summit High School in Missouri.
Allen finished his senior year as a number two ranked
triple jumper in the nation in 2017,
and now teamed with All-American Jared Belardo
in the jumps, WSU will have a potent
one-two attack for the next couple years.
Late August and early September signal
the beginning of the cross country season.
Here's a look at the upcoming schedule.
The cross country season is just around the corner,
and we had a chance to catch up with Wichita State
cross country coach Kirk Hunter
at one of his early-season practices
to talk about the upcoming season.
(piano music)
- You know, you're coming off of summer,
it's a new team on the girls,
and the guys are kind of veterans
now they're coming together.
They seem like they did their mileage,
I mean, you know, in the summer we don't
really get to do much in terms of coaching them,
and things like that, they just
have to put in the time on their own.
At least what I can perceive,
this early in the season that they did a good job.
Remember your flip as you're going through this.
We all have so many new kids on our team this year
that, throughout our track program and cross country
it's going to be interesting to see how it all develops.
Who's going to be the impact kids,
who's going to come in right away and make an impact.
Kind of like Sidney Hirsch when she was here,
super freshman, I mean, that's what our model is now,
that's what we want, super freshmen.
Guys, we're going to go as far as we can together.
- Talk about the workout today.
What did you guys do today?
- We did an escalation run, it was basically
it increased their tempo ten seconds every mile.
Remember, I'd rather be too slow than too fast.
Help each other out, pull each other as far as you can.
Alright? Three, two, one, take off.
Nice and comfortable.
You know, part of the workout today
was running as a group, working as a team.
See how far you can go.
I want the same thing in races.
This was a pretty good route,
there was some mixtures of uphills, downhills,
cross country's that way, I mean ideally you want
to run on what you're going to race on,
but you know, when you're doing something like this
it's hard to find ten miles of grass
that you're going to run on,
so, man this is so much better for the body
and so much better for the kids that we get to do this.
That line is the finish.
See the red line?
A good majority made it, eight on the girls,
and a good majority made it, nine or ten on the guys,
so, impressive, because usually
I don't have freshmen make it that far.
My first year here, I think some of those guys
made it three or four miles, you know so
they're going eight, eight and a half, nine and ten,
I mean, that's impressive.
I think that's it, I'm going to go up to the next one.
I'm really excited about JK Gold.
You know, I've had many schools try to get me to go
to their meets on the same day and they want us to change.
We don't want to change.
This is ... you know it's JK Gold, first of all,
I mean for JK, the meet's been going for a long,
long time ago, before it was even called JK Gold.
As a team I think having the full track team out there
it already starts to integrate with our staff philosophy
of hey, we're one team, and we're going to work together,
and so having everybody out there together
cheering each other on, working, doing all the things
that we're going to do, I think it's invaluable
for, just to kick off our year.
- We're here with Coach Rainbolt and we're talking
about our new move to the American conference.
Coach, officially it happened in July,
but it was kind of announced in April, in the spring.
What do you think has been the general feeling
around the athletic department
with the change in the conferences?
- I feel like in the world of college athletics,
this is a significant step up for Wichita State
from the Missouri Valley up into the American.
For Track and Field, you know the Valley
is an awfully good track conference,
and so I feel like around our office,
that we feel like we just need to keep
doing what we're doing, we do need to step up our game,
I think it's going to be tougher for us to win championships
at the clip that we have been winning them,
but I think that we're going to be battling for titles soon.
Like that's going to be certainly our objective,
that's our focus.
- You know, you've been in the Missouri Valley
for almost 20 years and Wichita State has been
such a big part of the Missouri Valley.
Personally, how do you feel about moving
to a new conference?
Is there sad? Is exciting, or what is it for you
as someone who's been in the Valley for so long?
- You know, sad and exciting are two good descriptors.
I am a guy who cares about history.
I care about tradition.
I like tenure in a conference.
I like it when a coach has a long tenure at one school.
I love that I've been coaching
at Wichita State for a long time,
and I like the idea of continuing my career there.
So I'm going to miss the Valley.
I love the Valley.
I thought that Missouri Valley Track and Field
was great track and field.
I've been really proud of every team title that we've won.
And so I'm going to miss it, but I'm also excited.
This new conference is a terrific challenge,
there's a bunch of terrific coaches in this league,
and I think it's exciting for our team,
for the athletes in our team,
I'm really pleased to see the athletes in our team
able to tell me what the American looks like,
able to tell me who their main opponents are
in the American, who our main opponents are as a team.
I feel like the athletes are excited,
so I am too, I'm looking forward to it.
I guess I can, you can sense a little bit of mixed emotions,
but generally, I'm really excited.
- So you mentioned some of the coaches.
There's some famous coaches in this new conference.
- Yeah.
- When you throw around names like Leroy Burrell,
Carl Lewis, you know, Jeanette Bolden, Johnny Gray,
there's some great coaches, you know,
and not necessarily, it doesn't mean that they're
better coaches than the Missouri Valley,
because there are great coaches there,
but does that kind of increase the prestige
of coming to Wichita State for a recruit?
Does it make recruiting easier?
I know we've talked about recruiting around the office.
- Yeah, I don't know exactly yet
what impact it has on recruiting at Wichita State.
To say to a recruit that, down there
at the University of Houston
a guy who belongs in any discussion
about the greatest track and field athlete in history,
Carl Lewis, is the Assistant Coach,
and one of his main opponents when he was sprinting,
and a guy who, for a time, held the world record
in the 100 meters, Leroy Burrell, is the head coach.
I mean it's sort of remarkable
for those two guys to be there
at the University of Houston.
Same thing with Jeanette Bolden at Central Florida,
and J.J. Clark at Connecticut,
but it goes on and on, you know,
heck that leaves out Elvis Ford at Tulane
who was just an NCAA champion and Olympian,
you know, and people don't even know about him,
but that guy was a star, and a wonderful guy,
you know we used to compete against him in the Valley
at Illinois State and a great guy,
so anyway, yeah there's a lot of good coaches
in this league, and it's really going to be
a neat deal I think.
I don't know what impact it's going
to have on our recruiting.
I feel like that there will be a perception
that we have moved up to a higher level
and I'm hoping, obviously,
that's going to help us in recruiting.
That athletes will like the idea of
going to Orlando for a conference championship,
going to Houston for a conference championship,
going to Yukon for a conference championship,
and competing against really, really well-known programs.
So I think, like you said, I don't think that means
that those programs are necessarily any better
than some of the ones in the Valley.
There've been some awful good track and field
in the Missouri Valley.
But, there might be a perception,
and maybe we'll benefit from that.
- Well if anybody who's been following our program,
they know last year we won four championships,
the year before we won three, seven championships
in the past two years was the first time
it's ever happened in the conference.
You know, does the expectation change,
you know, cross country's getting ready to start,
what are expectations for the first year,
is it kind of see how it goes,
or is the expectation hey we're going to battle
for championships right away?
- So, you know, I'm a guy who
I tend to be pretty transparent.
It's hard to be transparent in this situation.
Our women's team last year was really good,
and I think that we could have
battled for a title in that league.
We lost some immensely good seniors,
very good seniors, and we're replacing them
with some really good freshmen.
But it doesn't matter.
We're replacing seniors, All-Americans,
a few of them, with freshmen,
and some really good freshmen,
but they're going to take some time to get developing,
and to get up to speed in NCAA Division I Track and Field.
So on the women's side, I really don't know what to expect.
I think that we're certainly going to be talking
about battling up for a high finish,
but probably we're building, probably we're young,
and that might make it tough to envision
knocking off a title right away in year one.
On the men's side, we have a pretty intact,
strong team that's still together,
a championship team, that won two championships,
heck, the last four championships
in the Missouri Valley conference,
and I think that's a pretty good men's team.
Now, on that side, we're going up against
a really, really strong Houston team,
but I think that we're ready to compete
in that league with everybody else.
Right now I would have to say
I think Houston is the favorite, wouldn't you?
- Yeah. For sure.
- Yeah. I think Houston's the favorite.
But, I feel like that we can compete
with everybody else in that league,
and Houston better be ready and not stub their toe
or we'll be right there I think,
and so, you used the word expectations.
What are the expectations?
I don't know that I've established expectations yet.
Those are tough to establish until you get into the season
and you see how the conference descending order list
plays out and how it starts looking.
But we certainly, we had a team meeting yesterday.
You heard me say, hey we're going to be winning
championships in this league, and so let's start
thinking that way right now.
Let's start thinking about winning titles.
I hope the athletes heard that.
I hope that they begin developing that mindset collectively.
- Well it starts real soon.
We have the JK Gold cross country meet coming up,
so we're going to start finding out a little bit
about our team. - Yeah
- And so that happens right away and newcomers
start practice and the rest of the team will be going
right behind them, and so exciting time
to be part of Wichita State Track and Field.
- I think so. I think it's great.
I'm excited about it.
- Former Shocker Aliphine Tuliamuk
is no stranger to success, as she earned
13 First-Team All-American Honors while at WSU.
Her success has also translated
to her post-collegiate career,
and we had a chance to catch up with her on Skype.
So Aliphine, you have won four of the seven
USATF Road Racing championships this year,
there's four to go,
you've won over $40,000 in winnings this year.
Is this your main focus, this running road circuit,
or is there something else you'll be
focusing on more later in the year?
- Well the circuit for now is my main focus,
but then I think at the end of this year,
like maybe for the first season my coach and I
decided that I was going to try to run a marathon again.
We don't know exactly what we are doing,
I mean we kind of have a rough idea
but we haven't been confirmed yet,
so I'm just doing the circuit and then
the last race of the season,
which is like the Big Gold kind of,
I will be doing a marathon.
- So Aliphine, will you be running any races
on the track this year,
or are you solely focusing on the road,
and is there any chance you would come back to run
the inter-squad meet here at Wichita State?
- Well that's a good question.
Well I mean when you look at the track season
it's already almost over with the world
championships going on right now, so.
And for me really, I decided not to do
the world championships just because I wanted
to focus on the worlds and just to build up
for the marathon because if I was doing the track
then I wasn't going to be able to put in
a lot of miles like I want to
and I feel like I don't really have the speed
that I used to have when I was in college
because I'm now doing longer stuff.
So, yeah I would love to do the inter-squad
if I had the opportunity but I'm really not so sure
now because of my season the way it's kind of
structured right now, so maybe not this year,
maybe hopefully next year. We'll see.
- So recently you signed a contract with New Balance.
So what does it mean to be a sponsored athlete
by New Balance?
What does that mean to your running career now?
- Well as a professional athlete, you know like
you can only make so much money from winnings,
and it's not always guaranteed that you're going
to win every race, and having sponsorship
is very important because for example like,
I mean I have a little bit of salary from
New Balance, something that I didn't have last year,
but more important I guess for like a professional athlete
the way you make money when you have sponsorship
is that any race that you win, you have bonuses.
And I have a bonus structure with New Balance
so any US championship road race that I win,
I get some money for kind of like performance bonuses,
and that's really nice because that adds up
pretty quick and, you know when I think about where I am
financially right now compared to last year,
I'm way ahead, just you know when I only count
the balances, I mean the bonuses,
and little salary that I have.
And also like I don't have to worry about
buying shoes, which is very important
because I go through shoes like,
now that I'm running at least 100 miles a week,
by the end of like, one or one and a half months,
my shoes are like, you know I don't need to use them
anymore so I need new shoes,
and if I were buying them for myself
it would get really expensive,
so it's kind of nice that way.
- So now you live in New Mexico,
and you run and train with the Harambee Project,
and Coach Ryan Bolton.
What does this project entail,
and how has this group enhanced your career?
- The Harambee Project,
well harambee is actually a Swahili word.
It means that when we come together we achieve more.
And so this was a project that was here,
and the reason why I moved to New Mexico
in the beginning was I wanted to train
with Caroline Rotich and she won Boston Marathon
a couple of years ago, and we have another girl,
her name is Simone Abnet and she lives in Albuquerque
so like, for example when I was in college
I had to always find guys to pace me all the time
and then after I got out of college I didn't really
have that advantage, but then having a training group
is really good because, say like yesterday for instance
we had a tempo eight miles.
If I were doing it by myself I don't think
I would have been able to hit the times
that we were supposed to, but because you are there
the three of us pushed together and that really helps.
And for me that harambee word has a lot of meaning
because I don't really know how to run by myself,
to do well, to train well by myself,
so I need people so we can push each other.
And it's really enhanced my running career
just because I feel like the training that I have
right now is just like a stepping stone
from what I was doing in college,
except now that I am probably focusing more
on longer stuff, long runs, and even like workouts
and stuff like that, but yeah.
Being part of a group is really important
and our coach is very knowledgeable,
he really knows what he's doing and by the way
he was in the 2000 Olympics for the Triathlon,
so he's pretty ... and he ran also, he ran in college
and so he really knows what he's doing
and I feel like since I got out of college
I only got better and better every year
and that was just because of, you know I have a good coach
and having good training partners.
- So recently there have been a lot of Shocker women
going after college to be successful
in distance races like Kellyn Johnson,
and Tonya Nero, Desiraye Osburn, yourself,
why do you think Wichita State has been so successful
in producing women's distance runners after college.
- You know I think that the training structure
that we have at Wichita State,
especially for the long distance, is really good.
I feel like, for all those women,
they were super prepared when they,
you know, became poorer runners.
Like, when I think about myself, for instance,
I mean I didn't succeed right away.
I needed a lot of adjustment,
but I think that the environment
that we have in Wichita State in terms of training
and the family, like the teamwork and all that stuff
I think that really built us and made us stronger
and doing all those workouts that we used to do
and especially running with the guys for me for instance,
it really helped like, it kind of helped me
persevere a lot because when it comes to professional
running, I mean some of those training,
especially when you're training for a marathon,
it's really tiring, you know you get really tired,
and you just don't want to do more,
but then because you've learned how to persevere
from like four years when you were in college,
I think that really prepares you and so for me
I feel like we've been successful, you know,
as Wichita State alumni just because
of the training that we had.
And of course like I mean we used to have those talks,
you know, we'd talk about how
when you get out of school it's different,
it's kind of a different life and I feel like
whenever we had like those meetings and we'd talk about
stuff like that, like we were prepared,
and so like when I got out of college
and I wasn't able to perform right away,
I feel like those talks helped me to be patient.
Like I just exercised a little bit of patience
and now it's paying off.
- Welcome to our round table discussion today.
Our topic is going to be with
the idea of changing the world record.
Should the world records be reset
because of some of the doping scandals
and accusations of the seventies and eighties.
Today to talk about this topic we have Jason Parr,
he's the Head Distance and Cross Country Coach
at Friends University.
We also have Raquel Stucky, who's the owner
of First Gear Running Company.
Mark Phillips is the Head Coach
at Cowley County Community College.
Sophomore sprinter on the Wichita State
Track and Field Team, Daysha Bullocks.
And President of the Shocker Track Club, Darren Muci.
So I'm going to start with Jason.
What do you think of the idea of getting rid
of the old records and setting new records,
or maybe having a point of which the records
will begin again?
- I think as you look back from the years of competition,
what do we know to be true back in the 70s, 80s,
about doping, and what they were actually using,
I think if you compare that to today's genetics
and what people are able to get through the drug market
and what they're able to do, I don't know where you find
that baseline of truly finding out what was being used
and what wasn't being used.
The one thing that I love is going to see
that old school track and field I think in an authentic
way that was done the right way.
In today's age we've seen a change in performances.
We can talk about baseball, we can talk about triathletes,
we can talk about the cycling world,
we can get into all of the sports that,
in some degree, have some kind of doping issue.
You know, for me I want people to live up
to the integrity of what every sport's about,
and I want you to build a train,
because you've trained hard for that,
not because you need an edge,
and by doing that, going and doping,
and taking away from the people that are truly
doing what they need to do to get to that level.
- Raquel, what do you think about this topic?
- You know, I don't know. It's very controversial,
especially when you put the word probable in there.
Let's take for instance Shalane Flanagan was just recently
upgraded her medal from the 2008 Olympics,
so she was upgraded her silver medal.
That took nine years to come with a definite response.
And, I think that, all in all said, that's definitely
worth the wait, but you can't go on probability.
You know, true testament, you gotta find out the facts.
And that's, you know, I hate the fact that that's marring
our sport in track and field.
And, good point, that goes across all lines of sport,
unfortunately, where you can physically see it the most
is going to be track and field.
You know, when you see races that are just unbelievable
what's the first thing you think?
And it's truly unfortunate, but you know
as far as resetting, boy that's just
a hard correct answer.
You would like to think that, you know,
in the 70s and 80s it was gutsy performance
that was getting people through, you know,
those advancements in doping, and so on and so forth,
I mean, if those weren't discovered,
we need to figure out a way to set them aside
or have a little bit more than just probable.
So, that's kind of my thinking there.
- Mark, what do you think?
- I agree, I think probable is a horrible word to use
in this situation.
If you can't go back and prove that they were doing it,
how do you take those away?
And that's, just like that situation with the medal,
they went back and proved it.
So, I think if you can't take it away because of proof
I think it's pretty hard to do that.
- Daysha, you're somebody that's wanting to break records
some day, what do you think about this?
- I just think that now doping is a part of the atmosphere
of track and it wasn't like that at first,
so for me I'd like it to go back to its traditional
because I think that track is at any given day,
anybody can come and be the underdog and come and win,
and I just feel like if that's the case
they shouldn't be questioned if they were doping or not,
just because they worked hard.
So, I think like everybody else said,
I mean if you have proof that they did it
then go ahead and take it away from them
because they're unworthy of it,
but if there's no proof about it then
I mean, there's nothing that we can do about it
because it was in the 80s, so it wasn't really a big,
no one really knew much about it until right now.
- Darren, you're president of a track club, where you see
your athletes competing against the world-class athletes
at Olympic trials and USA championships.
What do you think about this?
- And I'm also a long-time track and field official,
so I've seen a little bit of everything.
I think we'd agree that there are some questionable
records out there.
For me, the women's 400 meter and 800 meter records
stand out as a bit odd.
That said, they were set, the athletes did have to perform.
Let's leave the records alone.
But we do know this, and Jason hit on this,
we've got athletes that are working hard
to do things the right way, there's a bar out there,
we know that they're going to hit and break those records
at some point.
Let's give our current athletes a chance to do
the best they can, and break those records
and get them removed.
- Okay so I'm going to agree and disagree with everybody.
And I'm going to say I think there should be two sets
of records.
Let's, we just had 17 years ago, the turn of the century,
so let's have some pre-2000 records and post-2000 records.
And, you know you see that a lot,
you'll see a meet with different records listed,
and you know, maybe that's a way to go
and if the post-2000 record is the record,
then there's only one record.
And that way at least it gives,
there'd be two record-holders and that would
maybe give a little more attention to the sport
for records that seem unbreakable at this point.
So anyway, that's my opinion.
What do you think?

GETTING 1,000 VIEWS FROM FIVERR | YOUTUBE MARKETING SCAMS - Duration: 9:32.
Almost a year ago I made a youtube video about buying views.
To sum things up, buying views doesn't work and if you want to grow your channel do it
organically.
Now a lot of commentators asked "who would buy views"?
I'm sure most of the commenters and perhaps even you the audience is thinking "someone
that would probably buy this is someone who wants to get famous on social media".
While that may be Very true, if I were to lose my morals and buy views it wouldn't be
for that.
It would be to make people believe that I would be able to get the views for them.
The market for getting someone youtube views is a real thing.
Not just for that wanna be famous person, but for brands who want to market their products.
That's why you have this boom of this new job called a "social media manager".
You also have whole companies dedicated to helping brands grow their social media presence
in order to get more sales and build branding.
Here's the thing.
Those services are expensive.
With a quick google search you'll see that hiring a social media manager can range from
$200 to $3000 per month for small businesses.
For enterprise ventures it can cost $5000 per channel.
So whats the quick solution?
Buy views right?
You can literally buy 1000 views for 2 bucks, but its not worth it because it actually doesn't
work.
I experiment before and all it does is give you the numbers.
It does nothing to your engagement or subscriber count.
In fact it ruins your ranking on YouTube's algorithm.
Wouldn't it be awesome if you could hire a social media manager to grow your youtube
account for the price of buying views?
Well there are services for this or they claim to be.
So, I get these emails about every once in a while and they claim to be from marketing
companies who will help me market my youtube videos and get more views.
I have enclosed a screenshot of your estimated monthly earnings from YouTube.
I hope the above information is use for you.
Now you can also improve it by making your videos more popular.
We provide.
professional service to make your videos popular.
If you have any questions or doubts then feel free to contact me back anytime.
What's really suspicious is that they add this social blade info.
Social blade if you didn't know is a free platform where you can search yourself up
or any other youtubers up and it shows you a bunch of stats for free.
Anybody can sign up for this so why would they add this in the email.
Now I'm not going to name the company because I don't want to to indirectly promote them
or on the opposite side of the spectrum ruin their business.
Their prices are cheaper than hiring a social media manager or digital agency but a bit
pricier than buying views yourself.
They claim to be a team of online marketing professionals that will take your site, or
in this case youtube video to the top of major search engines.
Lucky for us this service provides a few examples of clients it helped.
The first example shows the basic plan promising 1000 to 2000 views.
Now looking at the video, the views seem pretty good and the likes seem alright as well.
Comments are a little sparse but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.
Truth is you never really know if views are bots or not as proven by PewDiePie who accused
a kids channel Ryan's Toy Reviews of buying fake views.
Pewdiepie came to that conclusion because the channel had few comments, but on an interview
on the Phil Defranco show the channel freely gave their youtube analytics to Phil for analysis.
He came to the conclusion that the views seemed legitimate.
Canada, Indonesia, India.
For me when I looked at the numbers.
They seemed a lot more legitimate.
What was happening was that the main demographic for Ryans Toy Reviews are young children perhaps
under 8 years old who aren't really old enough to leave comments on videos and when
they do its gibberish.
I'm honestly still not convinced that this service is legitimate though.
But lets look at the 2nd example this client this company has said to have helped.
Views and likes are great, but if you look at the comments this client has stated he
didn't know his video was being promoted by this company.
A commenter writes "your video is being advertised as a video that paid for views.
did you know this?".
The creator writes back, "I did not.
Thank you for your feed back." Of course the creator could be lying so I reached out
to them and the other creators on twitter.
So when you buy views, all you need to do is paste your youtube link on their site and
watch the views roll in.
My theory is that these fake marketers are using those sites to buy likes and views,
and are claiming that your video is being marketing by them when in fact all they did
was paste your link to this site.
They are able to uncharge you because they claim work is being done by actual human beings
yada yada yada. nstead of waiting for those individuals who I contacted via twitter to
respond, I decided to do the experiment myself.
You can find a lot of people on fiver who claim to be an expert at marketing youtube
videos.
They charge at a price so low it makes me wonder why anyone would hire a social media
manager in the first place if this service works.
Here it is.
I paid 6 dollars.
The seller can now start working on your order.
It should be delivered by August 19, 2017.
So, it's been about a week or more probably since I bought that youtube marketing thing
from fiverr and I have the stats right here that I'm going to share with you, but before
I even share that the person who bought that markting service from those people that sent
me the email finally responded.
Only 1 person responded.
It's the person who made the 2nd video.
I have my laptop here.
I sent them a tweet and it says.
Did you by marking from I'm working on a youtube video and I'd love to know your thoughts about
them.
The respond with, I did and it was great and thank you. and you know on their youtube video
they clearly stated that they did not buy views and they did not know their video was
being advertised on this marketing site.
I personally think they were probably embarrassed by the commenters who asked this on their
videos.
The reason why they admitted it to me is that they think I'm inquiring about that service
and that they think I'm genuinely asking about their thoughts and that I'm buying that service.
Now I'm going to share the stats of the video where I bought the fiverr marketing from.
The views we have are 1,324.
Something that stands out to me are the likes on this video.
We have 16 likes.
That's definitely not enough for the views that it got but compared to when I experimented
with buying views.
I got about 12,000 views for buying views but absolutely no likes.
Now where are people viewing this video?
Most of them are from Thailand, Vietnam, Brazil, Serbia, Romania, Taiwan.
That's another common thing with buying views is you get views from these obscure third
world countries but another thing that stands out to me that's different from the last time
of when I bought views and experimented with this thing is the average percentage viewed.
So, this video was like a minute something in total.
The average that these people watched are actually really high 87% 91% 91% For the video
in which I bought views last time, the average view duration was actually 50%.
Since this video was actually 1 minute and 7 seconds, it'd be interesting to see what
would happen to that number if the video was say 30 minutes.
So, now we're going to the traffic sources.
Where are the viewers finding this video.
Right off the bat the top source is suggested videos and when we click that we see that
these sources aren't related to my video at all.
The first is like sjG4bc I don't know what that is.
The Face Men Thailand and I know there's a few of you thinking this is really great because
your video is being suggested by youtube.
It's actually not that great at all because since these videos aren't related to the original
video I made, real viewers because I'm very skeptical that these viewers that viewed by
video are real.
That viewer is unlikely to click my video due to the fact that it's unrelated to whatever
it is that I said they were watching and so because they're unlikely to click that video
youtube notices that and it ranks the video lower in those suggested terms.
So, what's my conclusion to fiverr marketing.
For this particular service, it doesn't work.
I'd like to say that the other marketing services for youtube are fake as well, but I'm only
saying that with 85% confidence due to the fact that I actually didn't try all the marketing
services on fiverr and these services are coming from different vendors so other people
may have different methods.
If you need views to market your video I'd say to do the work yourself.
If you have the money go ahead and hire a social media manager or hire digital media
agency to do that for you and even then with those agencies and those social media marketers.
I'd also advise you to be careful because they too have the capability to buy views
and make it look like your videos are being inflated so do your research on who you hire
because the act of buying views does ruin your ranking on youtube and it may be hard
to recover from.
So, that's the end of the video.
That's all I have for you today.
I hope you found this interesting.
You guy are really liking my social media videos so if you want to see me do more of
the social media stuff give this video a thumbs up.
I will see you guys next time.
Stay psyched.

August Reading Wrap Up | 2017 - Duration: 14:59.
[music only]
Hey guys it's Trina and this is my August reading wrap-up. There are time
stamps in the description of this video in case you want to jump straight to one
of those book reviews or if you want to jump over one because you're not that
interested in my thoughts on it. But we're gonna start out with my TBR
check-in. So, I had six books on my TBR for August and I read all six of them.
This is the first month in a long time, if not the first month in this entire
year, where I read all the books on my TBR all within that month. Out of the
nine books total that I read this month, four of those I actually listened to the
audio books of and the other five I read in the print format. Any of the
audiobooks I listened to this month I'll put a little note on the screen to
let you guys know which ones those were, and don't forget that I do an audiobook
review series where I talk about just the narration but I haven't yet reviewed
any of these audiobooks that I listened to this month. That will be in an
upcoming video so stay tuned for that if you are very interested in thoughts on
audiobooks. So into the book reviews for August now. As always, I'm starting at the
lower end of the books that I liked the least
working my way up to my favorite books of the month. First up I'm talking about
Perfect Days by Raphael Montes. I rated this book one-star unfortunately. It is
an adult thriller novel. This is set in Brazil and written by a Brazilian crime
thriller author and it is about a main character who is a stalker. He falls for
this girl and he like wiggles his way into her life in some creepy ways and
then he ends up kidnapping her and taking her on a road trip. A lot of
people compared it to the book You by Caroline Kepnes. That is a very apt
comparison. They do have similarities. My main overall issue with this book was
there was absolutely zero tension or suspense, which is something that I need
a lot more than this book gave me when it comes to the mystery and thriller
genre. It's just so straight forward like a killers manual of what he's gonna do
and then him getting away with it and just, you know, it wasn't interesting
because you knew what was gonna happen. He's telling you what's gonna happen and
then it happens. There's no hurdle no obstacle! What this book really has going
for is its readability. It was gripping. I always wanted to keep reading it because
I just kept holding out hope that the other shoe would drop and something
would drastically change the course that events were taking. It never happened in
a way that fulfilled me unfortunately. And going back to that comparison with
You, if you hated You and the reason you hated that book was because you thought
the main character was just too awful, you will definitely hate this book as
well because this character is just as awful, if not more so. In the end I just
wasn't fan. The next book I read this month was The Lying Game by Ruth
Ware. This is another adult mystery thriller and it is about these four
friends who were best friends in like their high school or boarding school and
they used to play all these pranks. They had this game called The Lying game
where they just tried to lie to people and see who would believe it. One of
these lies and things that they got involved in ended up getting them
expelled from the school and now it's like 15 years after they got kicked out
of school, these girls have not seen each other in the past many years, they've all
moved on with their lives, and then one of them calls the other three and says
she needs them and they all end up back in that town going to like the reunion
dinner of their old boarding school and the reader starts to see how all these
different events from the past and from the present fit together and we're
basically just trying to learn about what that event was that got them kicked
out and what really happened. This book had all of these suspense and all of the
tension that I want. You really don't know where things are going, you suspect
everyone and everything, there are a lot of obstacles and hurdles and stuff.
However, this book only got three stars because I just don't think that this
improved upon Ruth Ware's previous two books. I am a fan of her writing, her
mysteries are lacking and this one was the most lacking of her three books so
far. It just didn't set itself apart from the genre or from this author's previous
books for me so it was a little bit lackluster. I had four four star reads
this month and the first one I'm going to talk about was Map of Fates by
Maggie Hall. This is the second book in The Conspiracy of Us trilogy. This is a YA
contemporary adventure series about a girl who finds out that she's actually
part of this like ancient secret society. I really
definitely thought that this was a big improvement on the first book. For being
such a clue based actiony series, the first book didn't give me enough clues
and action but this book brought it. There was a lot of world travel, a lot of hunting
clues, and the romance kind of picked up for me because I just wasn't feeling it
before but I could start to feel it in this book. And yeah I just thought that
this one was really an improvement over the first book and so that is why I enjoyed
it so much. People call it the National Treasure or The Da Vinci Code of YA.
Those are definitely great comparisons and I would recommend it if you like
either one of those things. Then I read Wild Swans by Jessica Spotswood, which is
a YA contemporary novel about a girl who has this strong family legacy that
she is struggling with living up to because all of the women in her family
have been these greatly talented ladies, like poets or singers or artists and
then they all have met tragic ends with the exception of her and her mother. Her
mother fled her life and abandoned her as a child and then in this book her mom
comes back into town, back into her life, so she is dealing a lot with family
issues as well as the pressure and expectation for her to also come up with
this great talent which so far she doesn't have. I really enjoyed the family
emphasis in this book and how the main character struggles with her mom and the
whole family legacy. I really enjoyed the romance in this book. Jessica Spotswood
writes absolutely fantastic bookish nice guys. This book is very
atmospheric, you're gonna get a strong dose of the setting. If you're looking
for something with a very strong plot I don't think this is it but if you love
very atmospheric reads that are character driven and have an emphasis on
family with lots of diverse side characters I definitely think that this
is one that you would enjoy. Next is Girl Out of Water by Laura Silverman,
which is a 2017 debut novel. This is also a YA contemporary. This one follows
our main character who has grown up in Santa Cruz, California. She's a surfer
girl, she loves her surf town and she never ever wants to leave but then all
of a sudden her aunt gets into a car accident and breaks both of her legs
so the main character and her father have to pack up and move away from all
the things and all of the friends that our main character loves so that she can
help to take care of her three cousins over the summer and this book just
explores the new friendships and relationships that she makes and again
it has a very strong family connection in it and there is a really great love
interest that I really loved. He was just a really great, sweet nice guy and
this one also has a ton of diverse side characters in it. Laura Silverman has
been pretty open on her Twitter account that she has a disability and although
the main character does not, the love interest does have a form of disability
and then of course the aunt does too although they aren't the same thing
about Laura Silverman has, I believe. But there are some really great
conversations in this book about the main character who is able-bodied kind
of adjusting her way of thought about these other characters and their
disabilities and I felt that that was pretty great. I'm sure that that comes
from a place of experience from the author. I really connected to the parts
of this book where Anise is dealing with her friendships, like I felt like this
book was calling me out. I could so completely relate to why Anise was
really reluctant to open up to and connect with her friends because she
just got into her head about it and as someone with anxiety, I don't know if
this main character has anxiety, but it was something that I was like oh I know
those feelings so well. I totally hold myself back all the time and yeah it was
just really relatable to me. I really really enjoyed spending time in this
story and I would recommend it for sure. Next up is The Gentleman's Guide to Vice
and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee. This is a YA historical romance adventure novel and
in it we are following our young main character Monty who is bisexual. The
author of this book is also bisexual. And Monty is about to go off on a grand tour
of Europe with his sister Felicity and his best friend Percy who he has a crush
on. There is a very prominent male/male romance and flirtation all throughout
this book that is very evident by the book summary and by chapter 1. Monty as a
character was amazing. He's very smarmy, he's very flirtatious, he's very sassy
and his narrative voice really made the book for me. There is a pretty
action packed and very intriguing, interesting plot in this book that I was interested
in but I found that it kind of dragged at times. It was really the characters
that made this book such an enjoyable experience. The love interest Percy is
also black and he has epilepsy so there are some good conversations again about
these things but because this is a historical setting there's a lot of
racism, and ableism, and homophobia presented in this story because of the
time period but our main characters never embody those ideas, they never
support those ideas, they try to fight back against them. I just really
enjoyed this because it's those characters, like they're an amazing trio.
I really love them. The last three books I read this month were all rated 5
stars. They are all all-time favorites and one of them was a reread. I'll start
with that. It's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by JK Rowling, book 2
in the Harry Potter series. I listened to this on audiobook. I don't really have
any new thoughts to tell you guys so I won't keep you here listening about
Harry Potter, I will say the same thing I did last month about the audiobook: it is
absolutely fantastic to get to relive this world and this story in a new to me
format so I'm really enjoying my audio reread of these. The last two books on
this list were both my absolute favorites of the month. They were both
new reads for me and they both made it into my all-time favorites list as of
now because they both just showed me such strong pieces of myself. And I'm
going to talk about Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli first. This one
is a YA contemporary romance about Molly who is a Jewish, overweight, anxious girl -
she takes medication for her anxiety - and all three of those things are own voices
representation. And she's a girl who's had a lot of crushes. She's had 26
crushes in her life but she's never had a boyfriend, she's never been kissed, and
her twin sister gets into a new relationship with a new girlfriend and
the two of them team up to kind of push Molly out of her comfort zone and say
we're gonna set you up with someone, we want you to get a boyfriend, because
Molly is now like feeling a little bit left out because her sister's in a new
relationship. She feels like everyone's pairing off and she doesn't know why
she's holding herself back from romance. I related to Molly hard, hardcore because I
also am overweight and I also have anxiety. It was such a positive portrayal
of both of these things but very very real because, you know, not everybody has
positive thoughts about those things. And I also hardcore related to the love
interest in this book because he embodied a lot of things that I connect with and so
I just saw myself so much in this book. I really enjoyed it. It was so cute.
I loved all the side characters. Not only does Molly have some own voices
representation, there's a ton of diversity in the side characters. I think
it's an important read and also a very fun read and I loved it. That's all I can
really say. [laughing] And then we are to Bad Romance by Heather Demetrios and this is
a YA contemporary novel that is about an abusive romance between a girl and a
guy. This is a very difficult book to read. There are going to be
extraordinarily huge triggers for an abusive relationship, for rape, for
thoughts of suicide, but this book is so real, it is so powerful, it is so
important and it means so much to me because I've said before, I'm sorry to
repeat myself but because I get a lot of new viewers on wrap-ups, I have been in
an abusive toxic relationship before and this book hit home so hard and I think
part of the reason is because the author says in her author's note that she wrote
this based partially on some of her own real-life experiences. And I loved the
format of this book so much because the main character, she's writing to him in
the past now that she knows all these things were abusive. She'll say, "this is
how many days it took me to fall out of love with you," so there is the use of "you"
quite frequently throughout this book as she is talking to him so we get to see
just such a very genuine journey of her meeting this guy and falling for him -
which that's the thing I think I wish more people would understand, why people
fall for abusers - but at the time that these bad things are happening in this
relationship the narrator is able to stop and take that step back and she's
able to call it out right there on page as it has happened.
So you can see that genuine fall but then also have those things called
out at the exact same time and I loved the format, I loved how that was set up.
It absolutely is not going to cover everybody's experience with an abusive
relationship. This should not be your guidebook to what abuse looks like but I
definitely think that if you've been through an abusive relationship this
book will probably be pretty cathartic, and if you've never been through one I
think this book would also kind of shed some light on what behaviors are abusive.
I really appreciated the jealousy and the manipulation and the assault aspects
in this relationship and just how much of a struggle it was for the main
character to recognize this relationship for what it was. This book nailed it, it
really nailed it and it means a lot to me. It's one of those books that I'm
never gonna forget. I would definitely recommend it if you're interested in
those things but I'm not going to give you guys like a blanket recommendation
because I think it could be very upsetting and harmful to people who are
not yet past some of these things that are in this book. Luckily, I'm in a
place where I can read about this stuff now and I enjoy reading about it, so you
know, I'm not trying to push anyone that you need to read this if you've experienced
abuse and manipulation. You don't. Take care of yourself because this book is
very intense. Just be prepared before you go into it but it was my favorite book I
read this month and it is absolutely one of my favorites of the year. That's
everything that I read in August and I would love to hear if you guys have read
any of these books and you want to talk about them further we can definitely
chat down below and I would love to hear what your favorite book of the month was.
I'm gonna have my TBR video up for you guys soon. Thank you so much for watching,
I hope any of these reviews have been helpful to you, and I will see you in the
comments. Bye!

Neck Mobility Exercises (FIX YOUR STIFF NECK!!!) - Duration: 2:34.
Dom McKay musculoskeletal therapists here to show you how to relieve your
neck pain with gentle movement in this industry we talk a lot about posture and
its effect on the various pain syndromes but even more so than posture pain is
often simply caused by a lack of movement so in this video I'm going to
show you some simple exercises to access the range of motion in your neck and help
to free up the tension begin in a seated position looking straight ahead gently
turn your head to one side and then to the other pausing briefly at the end
range of motion repeat 10 to 15 times in both directions
looking straight ahead gently tilt the head to one side as if to touch your ear
to your shoulder pausing there for a brief moment and then repeat to the
other side repeat 10 to 15 times in either direction
begin by looking straight ahead gently tilt the chin toward your chest and
begin to rotate in one direction until a full circle is complete then reverse the
movement be careful not to create compression in the back of the neck as
you do this the easiest way to achieve that is to feel a stretch at the front
of the neck as you look up repeat 10 to 15 times in either direction these
exercises are a great way to create fluid mobility in the neck the kind of
an active stretch if you're looking for more exercises to relieve your neck pain
then have a look at some of my other videos let me know how you go in the
comments below I'm happy to answer any questions you have there there's a link

RUSSIANS REACT TO GREEK MUSIC | Τάμτα - Ήλιους και Θάλασσες | REACTION | αντιδραση - Duration: 5:06.
Let's go, guys and girls!
Ass, ass, ass
I want my future wife walk around the house dressed like that
Is this a parody or just a music video? -I believe it's just a music video
She just looks kinda nerdy
Of course, product placement
Those were some notes
All the girls got wet right now
That girl is beautiful
Crazy video effects! -Something fresh
Whoa, very nice song
I don't really listen to pop music but this song I love
Hromata? Sounds familiar
She found that shampoo on the bottom
They have so much advertising in the videos
It's so beautiful there, OMG
Of course, advertisement again
Damn, what a magnificent place
Gosh!
I want to go to Greece... damn, a flying turtle
WHAT?
It's the third time they show that shampoo advertisement
Guy with a beard
This song is so so cool
I love this chorus
REALLY NOW?
I won't be surprised if that thing will be inside her pineapple
I want to do it too but I'm afraid
The word "Hromata" sounds familiar
Amazing! What else can I say...
I loved this song
I will definitely add it to my playlist
We're both gonna add it to our playlists
What's her name? Tamta? -Yes
This is the letter "M"? -I think so
Tamta, you're very beautiful and all the girls in the video are very beautiful
And of course, amazing beach
Yeah, everything is awesome, everything is beautiful
A lot of advertisement too
Now I know why Greeks and Russians are brothers
Because in Russian movies and music videos they put lots of advertisement too
We have the same thing, so we're on the same page
But I noticed that they mostly advertise tanning lotion
Different creams and stuff
Because they have a lot of sun and beaches
It's so funny actually. I understand that everybody wants to eat
But I don't know how to react to that, it makes me smile seeing that
It's one thing when you showed the thing 2 times
But when it's 5-6 times, I think it's too much
I believe there were 2 different products for sure
The girl is beautiful, the video is very beautiful
The music is very beautiful as well -Yeah, the song is really nice
And amazing flying turtles -Yeah. Those effects were dope
I liked the video very much. But everytime I watch a video like this, I get sad
Because I can't go to Greece yet...
...and spend 1-2 weeks there
Anyway, follow us on Instagram (the translator too), all the links are in description

Today I am not at home – but in Paris!
The French ministry of agriculture and food invited me to show you
that French cuisine can be easy, modern and tasty.
Let's have a closer look – today I'm partaking in a 10-ingredients-challenge.
As you can see, I'm here at the market, with five other Youtubers
from all over Europe: The Boy Who Bakes
Megan ne comprend pas Amylia from Cookameal
DJ BBQ
And Alex French Guy Cooking,
he is going to pick 10 ingredients for me.
A French recipe: Challenge accepted!
It's … definitely French – no doubt about that!
To me, Roquefort
is about as French as you get WOW – all my taste buds are stimulated!
This is my first time cooking with tarragon … thanks Alex!
I could make a Quiche dough, I have all the ingredients for that,
and then I'll think about what to put in it.
Just weighing the flour... and spreading it onto the counter.
Add an egg into the pile of flour
I'm adding only chunk of the butter and grating it
onto the flour and egg mixture.
You can cut the butter into pieces, but I prefer grating it
And I adore Quiche!
What's your favourite French recipe?
Feel free to comment!
To me it's crazy how often we associate French cuisine with
"Haute Cuisine", but there are so many quick & easy
recipes out there.
Now knead the dough!
This is going to be „Quiche à la Hannah"!
I'll pack the dough in cling film and put it in the fridge for half an hour
to rest.
Guys, I have no idea if this is going to work!
Now I'm peeling the onions and cutting them.
Mmh…
I'll braise the onions in butter – and luckily I still have butter - xx
Here in Paris we're ALWAYS eating! Yesterday we had an 8-course-meal.
It was really, really cool, because it was quite exquisite but at the same time really easy to make
so cool!
For dessert we had beetroot ice cream! Crazy, right?
We also had tuna with a carrot-puree
On top of the carrot-puree there was an egg yolk – that was really, really cool.
Ok guys, let's fry the onions
oh yummy!
I'll link all the Youtubers and
Bloggers that are here with me down below in case you want to visit their channels, because
they're all really cool!
Mhmmm!
The onions are ready now!
I'll get the dough out of the fridge … already looks really good!
I'll put some flour on the kitchen counter – Let's get this party started!
I'll roll the dough onto the baking paper – just roll, roll, roll.
I'll just put a second sheet of baking paper on top of the rolled-out dough.
So it won't stick to the rolling pin.
I'm turning the dough once, peeling off one of the layers of baking paper and putting it paper side down into the tart mould.
It already looks really nice!
I'm adding the whole cup of crème fraîche and about the same amount of
milk to the mixture.
Looks tasty!
Hahaha - this whisk is nearly as big as I am!
Okay - let's get started!
I'm now dicing and adding the figs and onions
to the dough.
Then I'm adding the egg/ crème fraîche mixture.
Now I'm adding some crumbled cheese…
…a dash of lime juice…
And placing it into the oven at 180 degrees celsius for 40 minutes.
Tadaaaa!
Looking good!
But it definitely has to cool down before I taste it.
Now I'm adding a little bit of lemon zest and herbs - can't forget those.
Now it's done...
I just tasted the tarragon and it's really
strong. I hope I didn't use to much.
I'll let it cool for a bit and then I'll have a taste.
I think it turned out really well!
The figs really give it sweetness - it could have
used a bit more salt, but it's not strictly necessary.
Very soft, it really melts on your tongue.
I think it's delicious!
Phew – I like it.
This is a classic French recipe – a quiche and I improvised a bit, was creative with the recipe,
but it worked.
This proves that once again, everything can turn out well when using the right ingredients.
Try something new, dare to be creative – bon appétit!
By the way – you also have the chance to win a culinary trip to Paris, there will be a video on that coming soon
on my channel.
If you don't want to miss that video simply subscribe right here,
where you will find another one of my 10 ingredient challenges.
I would be happy to see you there!
Big thanks again to the French ministry of agriculture and food. A big kiss to all of you, bye-bye
and bon appétit!

You are welcome,
you guys are going to have a hard time translating that!
Earlier, you mentioned the "Budo Renshu" book. Could you talk about it?
There are actually several versions of this book.
There is also a mimeographed version.
The soft back one from after the war is a bit different.
The post-war version...
What year was this?
Towards the end of 1945.
It is a bit different from O Sensei at that time.
The first mimeographed version was also copied.
This was a bit problematic,
because it happened without consulting Ō-sensei.
What did O Sensei think about writing books?
O Sensei was often told to write a book,
but as he kept on changing all the time, that would be difficult.
If he would not change he could write up (his vision of Aikido), but he changed all the time.
What is the point of writing what you were doing before when new changes happen all the time?
It can't be written.
You often use the phrase "Aikido is Budo that is alive in the present time".
This was something Kisshōomaru Doshu used to say.
He said "Ueshiba Morihei, my father, was aiming for a martial art alive in the present".
But I don't know what precisely he meant.
I don't know the context it was used in because he didn't explain it.
We may have a vague sense of what he meant.
But I don't know what kind of meaning Kisshomaru Sensei and Ueshiba Sensei gave to it.
What meaning do you personally ascribe to it?
It is an art that has at its centre the principles of the mind and body,
a technique that is born from the extreme attentiveness of Budō, from the very borderline of life (and death).
Through this technique, through our life, our mind and bodies,
how can we create something positive for contemporary society?
Without destruction, in a positive direction?
That is what it means to me
After all, the saying "Love is at the root of the martial arts" does not refer to the idea of love that we normally talk about.
It's the love of the universe.
How has your own Aikidō changed?
At the beginning, when I was a university student, I practiced extremely hard.
But listening to O Sensei and Tempu Sensei, even without being aware of it while practicing…
When you are young you practice vigorously, you practice it as a technique to fight.
But as a general principle, when the word "the way" is added to a martial art, it means that it becomes removed from the actual practice (of fighting)
Even so, from the Meiji period onwards,
wars with foreign countries started happening and society was no longer able to think outside the frame of "fighting".
That is when things became complicated.
There was a gap between the development of society (toward militarism) and what O Sensei was practicing.
That is the difficulty.
Especially from the Showa period onwards.
There is the saying: "to become poisoned by secret teachings", could you explain it?
For example, when my grandfather started doing archery.
my great-grandfather who was born in the period of the samurai,
he was very skilled in horsemanship and archery,
when my grandfather started he told him two things.
One was "Do not criticise other people's technique".
The other was "Do not read books about archery".
That is what he told him.
Because confusion will arise.
This master says this, this other master says something completely different.
To choose the best from different things is the method to make the least progress.
It will be a patchwork.
If you want to learn something properly you must first follow and master the master's teaching.
After that, occasionally you will find something very sophisticated written in an archery book.
"To become poisoned by secret teachings" is something that occurs in Aikidō as well.
Instead of looking at their feet, people look up and imitate sophisticated movements in a pretentious, empty manner.
That is called "to be poisoned by secret teachings".
This is quite rife in Aikidō.
How has the practice of Aikidō changed up to the present?
I can't say because it's different for different people.
It's like art.
In Japanese "Budo" is called "art".
But when the English word "art" was introduced during the Meiji restauration,
and we used the word "geijutsu" for translation because there was nothing else,
there was no equivalent and so it was adapted as "geijutsu".
That is why Issai Chōsan's book is called "Tengu Geijutsuron".
The meaning of the Japanese word "geijutsu" is "martial art" here.
Whether you put Budō into the large education framework created by the ministry of education,
or whether you think it should be turned into a sport, and if you do so what will change,
this is all a question of the way you think.
The difficult thing is the reality.
And why?
Because if everyone practices the same thing simultaneously, people who move in a unique manner will become rarer.
A further point, the biggest perhaps,
is that we no longer live in a period in which we need martial arts as practical skill.
he police may use Taihōjutsu to apprehend criminals, soldiers may practice martial arts, that still exists,
but for the general public it is a means of education, no longer common sense.
There is a tendency to think of it as no longer important.
But in reality it is important to practice and cultivate an art of some kind.
Whether it is dance, or painting, or music, it is better if everyone were to practice something with their mind and body that allows them to express themselves through it.
That is certain.
Separate from self-defense, or from part of police training, or from fighting skills for the self-defense forces,
but as a traditional Japanese art.
Because it will polish your perception/sensation/intuition.
It will polish the way you think about things.
And the biggest of all problems, the difference between concentration and attachment.
How can we overcome this problem?
To overcome?
When you've learned the technique and practice very hard,
you will unconsciously be able to feel the difference between concentration and attachment.
For example, I am now 86,
quite a few of my friends and colleagues are sick, or hurt,
and some of them even saw their children passed away before them.
that is when the state of your mind and the way you use your mind (becomes important).
Do you understand "attachment"? The difference between "concentration" and "attachment"?
"Attachment" means you are captured by things, "concentration" means you simply reflect things like a mirror?
Chuang Tze said:
"The true human being uses their mind like a mirror".
3000 years ago.
There is no doubt that this is the most important problem of mankind in its 3000-year history.
How does one change into the other?
Attachment means the mind is attached to the things it perceives; it stops.
Concentration means you simply reflect things like a mirror, that is why you remain free.
When you fall ill for example, in order to heal if you remain attached your mind will tire and attain a state of suffering.
That is the problem.
That is the origin of all problems.
Whenever something big happens in the world, the reason usually is (attachment of some kind).
From the largest wars and rebellions to the most personal and smallest problem,
it is the root of everything.
When you think of that, it is very important.
But it is a very difficult problem, not something that can be taught.
Even if you understand the rationale, it doesn't mean that you can attain a transparent state of mind.
One has to investigate this for oneself?
How you tackle this is extremely important.
Thank you very much.
You're welcome.
Was it alright?
I think you're going to have a hard time translating that!
