Times That Trying To Censor Games Totally Backfired - Duration: 7:34.
No matter how violent, depraved, or overtly sexual a video game is, rallying the public
in an effort to censor a title will always bring more attention to the game in question.
If you tell the gaming audience that they can't play a game, they're going to want to
play it.
"So tell your folks 'Buy me Bonestorm or go to hell!'"
Here are a few examples when video game censorship went very wrong.
Death Race
If you think public outrage over video games is a modern thing, think again.
Exidy's Death Race is a 1976 arcade title in which players zoom around a black and white
screen, running over stick figures to gain points.
Officially, the creatures are "gremlins," but there's little difference between a monster
and a normal human being in the space of a few pixels.
Death Race wasn't anything special, but once the Associated Press ran an article about
it, weirdly comparing the game's digital beeps to the "scream of a child," it was off to
the digital races.
After that, various articles denounced the game as "sick" and "morbid," and called for
its removal from arcades.
The end result?
Death Race sold very, very well, and in 1976, Exidy made $3 million thanks to Death Race
alone.
Exidy released games until 1989, and violent video games were here to stay.
Mortal Kombat
Way back in the early '90s, Nintendo controlled 90 percent of the United States' video game
market… but it had powerful rival.
Sega managed to create a unique niche for itself by promoting their 16-bit Sega Genesis
as a more mature, edgier product than the Super Nintendo, which was portrayed as family-friendly
toy.
Enter: the notoriously bloody fighting game, Mortal Kombat.
"Johnny Cage Wins!"
After a successful arcade release, both Nintendo and Sega had to make a choice when it came
to their console editions: to censor, or not to censor?
Sega went for blood, albeit in a roundabout way, with an easy-to-remember cheat code to
unlock the game's gore, but Nintendo kept it clean.
"Finish her!"
As a result, the Genesis version of Mortal Kombat sold more copies than its Nintendo
cousin, inadvertently proving Sega's point.
The Genesis really was the system to usher in the next era of gaming.
Night Trap
There's only one reason you've heard of Night Trap, and it's not because the 1992 full-motion
video game is any good.
'I'm so confused!
What's going on?"
In 1993, when the United States Senate held a hearing about the effect of video games
on players, politicians singled out Night Trap and Mortal Kombat as particularly egregious
examples of video game violence.
"The second game is Night Trap, which is a game set in a sorority house.
The object is to keep hooded men from hanging the young woman with a hook…"
Complaints from parents followed, and Sega pulled Night Trap from store shelves right
before Christmas, promising to release a censored version down the line.
But instead of keeping the content under wraps, the Senate hearings boosted the game's profile
on a national scale.
When Night Trap came out for PC and Mac in 1994, Digital Pictures specifically used the
controversy as a selling point.
The real kicker?
The ESRB, which was founded as a direct response to these Senate hearings, rated the upcoming
Night Trap remaster "T for Teen": appropriate for players 13 and up.
Manhunt
Rockstar Games is well-acquainted with controversy, being the folks behind the Grand Theft Auto
series and all, but despite critics' claims, Grand Theft Auto doesn't force you to run
over hookers or innocent pedestrians.
For the most part, the only people that you have to kill are other criminals.
Rockstar's Manhunt is different.
Speaking to GamesRadar, a former Rockstar employee revealed the game's troubled history,
revealing that company employees threatened to mutiny because of the game's excessively
violent content, saying,
"With GTA, we always had the excuse that the gameplay was untethered….
You could play completely ethically if you wanted."
"Manhunt, though, just made us all feel icky.
It was all about the violence, and it was realistic violence."
The rest of the world responded similarly.
Politicians introduced legislation to fine retailers that sold mature games to kids.
And after an alleged Manhunt fan murdered a 14-year-old with a hammer, mimicking one
of Manhunt's grisly kills, some stores pulled the game entirely.
When Rockstar decided to press ahead with an even more depraved sequel, they didn't
even have to do much marketing.
As the New York Times noted,
"Manhunt 2 has received free publicity and media attention it would have never enjoyed
were it not for the presumably unwitting complicity of the ratings boards and self-appointed media
watchdogs."
"It is called Manhunt 2.
And we must warn you, there is nothing about this that is not disturbing."
HuniePop
It's not just violence that attracts censors; sex is a big problem, too, especially in North
America.
Take HuniePop, for example: a game that fuses match-three puzzles with a visual novel.
But it also asks the player to seduce a variety of anime women.
Succeed, and you'll not only get down with your digital lady, but you'll also unlock
some explicit illustrations.
Critics begrudgingly agree that it's a good puzzle game, but at its core, it's pretty
clearly cartoon porn.
While HuniePop is right at home among the visual novels produced in Japan, it's awfully
racy for mainstream American outlets, and it's been both banned from Twitch and heavily
censored on Steam.
But that controversy also generated awareness: HuniePop moved around 540,000 copies in its
edit form, which isn't bad for a niche title.
Of course, there's a catch: shortly after HuniePop arrived on Steam, the game's developers
released a free patch that restored the hidden content, voiding the Steam-imposed censorship
after all.
Point: perverts.
Postal 2
The difference that censorship made for the Postal franchise is clear.
The first Postal received mediocre reviews and didn't make much of an impact, aside from
an attempted ban championed by senator Joe Lieberman.
Its sequel, Postal 2, spawned a feature film spinoff, broke sales records, and continues
to receive expansion packs and new content from its developer, even though the game is
15 years old.
So, what changed?
The New Zealand government succeeded in banning Postal 2 on the grounds that
"...the game is designed, and has the capacity, to allow the player to test how much violence
and humiliation he or she can inflict on human beings."
Australia refused to certify the game, effectively making it illegal in the country.
The Swedish government tried and failed to sue Postal 2's local distributor for selling
violent content.
All of these things just ended up promoting the game.
Postal 2 even received an expansion pack in 2015, and a modern remaster of the first game
arrived in 2016.
Plans for Postal 4 are reportedly under way—and, if history is any indication, it'll freak
out people all over again.

("Now and Forever" by Richard Marx)
It's so good.
Beautiful.
(Forever a legend,)
(Richard Marx's "Now and Forever")
(His voice doesn't change even with time.)
Please give another round of applause to Richard
for his beautiful performance.
(Please give him a round of applause.)
Today, we have
Director Lee Muyeong here to help translate.
- Please welcome him. / - Thank you.
(Thank you)
How does it feel to be here as a legend?
I'm so happy and honored to be here.
I can't wait to hear the singers sing my songs.
He's very happy and honored to be here.
He says he can't wait to see how the singers
will be singing his songs.
Of course.
The singers will compete by singing his songs.
Please enjoy them,
and share any stories you might have.
I plan to. I'm really happy to be here.
- Thank you. / - He's happy to be here.
(Immortal Songs, Richard Marx special)
(It starts now.)
(Soulful singer, Kim Johan)
(Lady of the house, ALi)
(Perfect harmony, Bubble Sisters)
(Best couple, Ben and Im Sejun)
(Sweet voice, Nakjoon)
(Charming band, Jannabi)
(Who will be the winner for Richard Marx special?)
Immortal Songs,
- Singing the Legend! / - Singing the Legend!
(Immortal Songs, Singing the Legend)
The first guest I'll introduce to you
is the king of rhythm and blues.
- It's Kim Johan. / - Hello.
When Richard Marx was performing actively,
was he someone you liked?
That's when New Kids On The Block debuted.
They were like idols,
while Richard was seen as a musician.
We used to make mixed tapes.
We recorded the radio.
I used to have all their songs.
Johan came a year ago
for Chris Norman special and won.
You're here today for Richard Marx.
I wonder if you hope to win today.
- I'd assume that. / - No, it's just a tribute.
- He's someone I admire. / - What?
Just knowing I could sing with him makes me happy.
- Did you say hello? / - No, not yet.
He's able to communicate with him.
He's probably the only one who speaks English.
There's Nakjoon.
Right, Nakjoon.
- He can do it. / - I can do it too.
Can you speak with Richard?
Welcome Korea.
(Welcome to Korea!)
That's it. That's all you have to do.
We're finally having him on the show.
It's his first appearance.
He has a sweet voice, it's Nakjoon.
(Sweet voice, Nakjoon)
(Footage provided by SBS)
(JYP was charmed by his talent.)
He sings the song completely different.
If I were to pick, you'd be the winner.
(He beat his rival, Sam Kim.)
It's Bernard Park!
(Winner of "K-pop Star 3")
We're more familiar
with calling you Bernard.
My real Korean name is Nakjoon.
- Originally. / - Your last name is Nak?
- No, It's Park Nakjoon. / - He's Bernard Park.
I also heard you have
a special relationship with Richard Marx.
On the audition program,
I sang "Right Here Waiting".
(This song allowed his name to be known.)
(Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting")
(Footage provided by SBS)
(He's falling for Nakjoon.)
As far as I know,
Richard saw the performance
and complimented you.
Can we hear that song? It's been a while.
(Shall we be moved by Nakjoon?)
(It's so good.)
(His sweet voice)
(pampers our ears.)
Richard also said
that he has high hopes for Nakjoon's voice.
- Really? / - Yes.
Your voice makes even Richard nervous.
We'll look forward to your performance today.
(Please look forward to Nakjoon's stage.)
She's forever the queen of Immortal Songs.
- ALi is here! / - ALi! Come on.
ALi came on the show so many times,
but it's only her second time singing a pop song.
Yes, it's just the second.
For the first time, I sang Bob Dylan's
"Knockin' On Heaven's Door".
I heard that a legend was coming from abroad.
I really wanted to do it, so I begged to be here.
I'm worried about my pronunciation.
I didn't think about it before,
but imagining him in front of me
makes me look up the lyrics.
Is there a section you're unsure about?
- Ask him. / - He's right there.
The pronunciation is hard.
Help her fix it.
- It's the beginning. / - The beginning?
- It's the most important. / - You have to open well.
Summer came and left without a warning.
What does it mean?
- It means summer... / - It came without warning.
(Intercepting)
You're better than him.
- He sounded poetic. / - You're still good.
I'm still good.
I'm still here.
Simultaneous interpretation.
Summer came and left without a warning.
Can you do it like you're from Mexico?
(That's easy.)
(His pronunciation makes us crave nachos.)
(He's the best.)
They're the best couple. It's Ben and Im Sejun.
(Ben and Im Sejun)
Now we're so used to
having them come together.
They feel like a team now.
Ben, your face says
you want to come here alone.
It was good even when she came alone.
Is it okay coming out with him?
At first, I thought we got along so well.
- The first time, / - Yes, that's right.
we did so well and we even won.
Since then, it got hard working with him.
You have disagreements.
What does Minsu think about you two performing?
He just lets us do whatever we want.
- He doesn't get involved. / - He lets us be.
I remember he used to help with arrangements.
- Does he not do it? / - All he does is eat now.
- He just eats? / - He only posts foods
on his social media.
- Isn't he on a trip? / - It's hard to see him.
This band is full of charms.
It's Jannabi.
I just heard
you sold out 1,500 seats for your concert.
Do you have 1,500 people in your family?
- Wait. / - Look.
He's mad.
- You just went like this. / - No.
You're younger than me.
Did your parents come to watch the concert?
Yes. Not just my family,
our neighbors came as a group.
- Your neighbors? / - Yes.
What suburban people do
when there's a show in Seoul,
is that they rent a bus.
- They rent? / - Everyone gets on.
Do they come together?
They don't just come.
They make a huge banner.
- They bring a banner? / - Of course.
That's a must.
Your group is becoming more popular.
When things get better,
there's always a member that acts strange.
- It's very common. / - Yes.
Is there a member like that?
We don't have one among us.
- No? / - Our manager's like that.
- Isn't he your brother? / - He's my big brother.
The way he walks...
How did it change?
He used to walk properly.
These days, he carries a bag like this.
(He's into having trendy fashion items.)
(Proud)
(Move out of the way, Jannabi is here.)
He's confident. He's proud.
Your brother must be really happy.
I will now pick our first performer.
This is a musician that musicians love.
They're full of soul
and are excellent at creating harmony.
Their outstanding talent won our hearts.
They're the strongest vocal group.
It's Bubble Sisters.
(Bubble Sisters)
It's Bubble Sisters.
- It's Bubble Sisters. / - I thought it was us.
Please say a few words.
Richard Marx just sang on stage before us,
so that makes us nervous.
But we'll try to put up an exciting first stage.
- We'll do our best. / - Great.
We know how powerful it will be
- if you sing an upbeat song. / - Of course.
Let's go, Bubble Sisters!
Our never-ending segment is back.
Immortal Songs'
Chiyeul's Fierce Welcoming Ceremony!
It's for now and forever.
It's his first appearance today.
Let's see Nakjoon first.
I'm curious. Nakjoon is new today.
He's actually not so good in Korean.
- Will it be okay? / - Is it okay?
Of course. Anything is possible.
Do you have anything to show us?
- Louis Armstrong? / - Louis Armstrong.
I can picture you singing in his tone.
(Surprised)
(He's singing well)
(but it reminds us of someone else.)
You sound like Maenggu.
"It's snowing."
Try this. "It's snowing."
"It's snowing."
(Maenggu studied abroad.)
Yes, this is it. We got it.
We got it.
I think Johan can imitate Louis Armstrong too.
- No, the thing is... / - Can you do it?
I didn't know, but we overlap.
- You overlap. / - Exactly.
Why don't you try Louis Armstrong?
Is this a battle?
(He's actually better!)
He's good.
- "It's snowing." / - "It's snowing."
- He stole your talent. / - He's good.
- Anything else? / - Something he can't copy.
Dance? Do you dance?
I'm a terrible dancer.
- Then we'll take a look. / - I can't...
We don't watch people that dance well.
- We like bad dances. / - Yes.
Cue the music.
Let's go, let's go.
Nakjoon!
He can dance.
(Johan, are you watching?)
You're good.
(He's showing off his hidden talent.)
- Kim Johan. / - Why me?
- Kim Johan. / - Do I have to go?
Kim Johan.
(This is)
(the American groove.)
Amazing.
(He's teaching Nakjoon.)
(It's my talent...)
Hello, we're Bubble Sisters.
(Strongest vocal group)
(Bubble Sisters)
(They hope for the first win today.)
When we heard that Richard Marx was coming,
we thought you were lying.
We thought it was a prank.
But he's really here.
It's the song that topped
the billboard chart in 1989.
We prepared "Satisfied".
We left its rhythmical bare bones,
and added our soulful emotions.
It'll be very funky and exciting.
We'll try to surprise Richard with our song.
Let's go, Bubble Sisters.
Here comes the first performer, Bubble Sisters.
(The first performance by Bubble Sisters)
(Bubble Sisters)
("Satisfied" by Bubble Sisters)
Yes. Guitar!
(Their powerful singing beats the heat.)
- Thank you. We love you. / - Thank you.
(Bubble Sisters' "Satisfied")
We love you.
- Thank you. / - Thank you.
(They're so good.)
- Thank you. / - Thank you.
Bubble Sisters' "Satisfied".
Their cheerful energy
shined in this song.
ALi, you're the queen of Immortal Songs.
What did you think of their stage?
As a solo artist, looking at them
makes me want to join them.
Isn't it better as a solo when doing finances?
Of course.
(Of course.)
What did you think, Sejun?
The harmony they made was wonderful.
I felt like I was watching "Dream Girls".
What about you, Yunkyunl?
We saw them in the waiting room,
and they told us to go easy today.
But they went all out.
(They're so passionate as if they're on fire.)
(This is them going easy.)
I will now pick our second performer.
This person
has something in common with Richard.
As soon as he debuted,
he became such a hot topic.
Is it Johan?
He's imitating Raymon Kim.
He has a charming voice.
His music is full of soulful groove.
He spread rhythm and blues in Korea.
He's the king of rhythm and blues, Kim Johan!
(Kim Johan)
It's me.
Bubble Sisters
- must be crying inside. / - What do we do?
(It's Kim Johan?)
This is too cruel.
Are you okay with going up now?
It's a bit fast, isn't it?
It's a bit early.
No. I was just thinking
an hour from now would be perfect.
That's true.
If you get picked first,
you can beat everyone.
- Don't be disappointed. / - You can beat everyone.
- All kill. / - I'll see Richard sooner.
Please open your hearts to listen to me sing.
Let's go.
In the 90s, he taught us
true rhythm and blues.
- Of course. / - He was the one.
Kim Johan, let's go!
- Good luck. / - Good luck.
- It's a good day. / - For what?
It's a good day for welcoming ceremony.
Great. Are we finished now?
No.
There's Sejun.
I did about four different things,
- but I got edited out. / - Yes, you did.
All four of them didn't make the show.
- He had a realization. / - I know how to be funny.
Teach us.
You have to repeat to be funny.
- Try something then. / - That time,
I impersonated Lee Soonjae.
- Try it. / - I was embarrassed.
Try it.
Junha.
(It's mediocre,)
(but he's shameless.)
Junha.
You figured it out. Is there another one?
- Do Minsu. / - Minsu sang
"I Want to Cry" at Immortal Songs.
He copies Minsu all the time at concerts.
- The audience loves it. / - Show us.
(Yun Minsu has a unique groove.)
(He made the audience cry)
(with belting.)
(Don't get edited out.)
(It starts out nicely.)
(This is incredible.)
(The singing technique pushes and pulls.)
(He even got the footwork down.)
(Groovy babbles)
(He is like a doppelganger.)
Sejun, come here.
You are the master of variety shows.
You sounded exactly like him.
(He first appeared in Chris Norman special.)
(His soulful groove was explosive.)
(He won in his first visit.)
(Kim Johan's soul will explode today.)
Richard Marx is a favorite singer of mine.
He plays an important part of my musical world.
He is a part of my memories.
I believe it was his second album.
"Repeat Offender" was a great album.
It made me learn guitar for the first time.
I still sing his songs often.
The singer and the song,
"Right Here Waiting" are meaningful to me.
Practicing the song made me ambitious.
I sing the first verse with my voice alone.
It's an arrangement
I wanted to try out.
I hope Richard Marx thinks that I sang diligently.
(A performance with respect for his idol)
(Please listen to my voice.)
Here comes the second performer, Kim Johan.
(Kim Johan)
(Kim Johan)
(He is the king of rhythm and blues.)
Hi, it's nice to meet you. I am Kim Johan.
It has been a while.
The song I am going to be singing tonight is
"Right Here Waiting".
I have always been a fan since high school.
It's a pleasure to be here to sing your song.
I hope you like it.
(He is honored to meet his idol.)
("Right Here Waiting" by Kim Johan)
(A song of the dream to meet you,)
("Right Here Waiting" by Kim Johan)
(They feel the resonance of the soul.)
We listened to Johan's "Right Here Waiting".
The song brought out the boy within him.
It must have been amazing to sing before a singer
whose songs you enjoyed as a child.
Richard Marx came to Korea to listen to this song.
I couldn't help but think that way.
Perhaps I feel this way because I am
- from his generation, / - Me too.
but I was deeply moved.
Nakjoon, what are your thoughts?
During the welcoming ceremony,
Johan stole my voice impression.
He danced. I also sang this song.
I can't believe he even stole this song.
You sang this song too.
You sang this song in an audition program.
- What are your thoughts? / - You and Johan's
versions are different.
- They are very different. / - Do you like his version?
He added elements of rhythm and blues.
I am not good at that, so it sounded very cool.
Jannabi, what did you think?
We don't know much about rhythm and blues.
In that case, shall we ask ALi?
ALi knows a lot about rhythm and blues.
Because of that, I am sometimes put off
by the excessive use of singing techniques.
However, he perfectly added
his own colors to the song.
It was like looking at a beautiful mountain.
In a delicate way,
he built up the chorus.
At the end, he hit high notes.
It felt like he reached the top of the mountain.
Hurrah!
That's what it seemed like.
That's what you yell at the top of the mountain.
(Hurrah)
(Johan's soulful echo impressed the legend.)
(Bubble Sisters versus Kim Johan)
Richard Marx.
(It's the first question of the day.)
How do you feel... There is an interpreter.
I am sorry.
There is an interpreter. I am sorry.
I forgot.
(Dongyeop feigns innocence.)
Please ask him how he liked the performances.
How did you like Bubble Sisters' stage?
You seemed to be very entertained.
First of all, I just want to say that this is
so humbling for me. I am so honored to have
not only my songs
performed by such great singers,
but the arrangements are so good
and the band is incredible.
They are really top notch. They are really excellent.
Bubble Sisters were so good.
When I saw that they were going to sing "Satisfied",
I was thinking...
I loved each of your voices,
but I loved it when you sang together.
It was just really exciting and fun.
And you.
He moved on to Kim Johan.
He is an incredible singer.
My songs are very simple
and very quiet. You made it like a big show.
It was awesome.
Both of you gave incredible performances.
I am glad I am not choosing
because I couldn't pick between the two of you.
You are both amazing.
"Right Here Waiting" was another number one song
in 1989.
What was it like to have two songs hit number one
in the same year?
Well, it was amazing.
Especially because it's pretty amazing to me
that all these years later...
"Right Here Waiting". I heard people singing along.
When I hear it, it's just...
It's so amazing for me. I wrote that song
in 20 minutes.
The song just sort of wrote itself.
It was the easiest song I ever wrote.
This is a bit of a personal question.
Please ask him how much he made in that year.
Please don't answer that. I was joking.
It would be rude to ask him that.
You must have been nervous to perform first.
You saw Richard Marx give a standing ovation.
How did it make you feel?
We were deeply moved.
He gave us a standing ovation
and high praises
and the audience cheered for us.
We are very happy.
Kim Johan told us numerous times
he loved Richard Marx ever since he was little.
Richard Marx is Johan's favorite singer.
Do you like him that much?
I loved his music.
I listened to and sang his songs.
I am thankful that I got to meet him.
He has always been a part of my musical world.
I am sure everyone will go home with good memories.
Let's see whom the audience has chosen.
(The result)
(Bubble Sisters versus Kim Johan)
(They satisfied everyone with their talent.)
The first match is between the best voices.
Will Bubble Sisters take the first win?
(He has been waiting for this moment.)
(For the legend, he showed his soulful groove.)
He is the master of rhythm and blues.
Will Kim Johan take a win?
("Satisfied")
("Right Here Waiting")
(A match between the top one songs)
(Who will be the winner?)
(Kim Johan)
Kim Johan.
(It's an unbelievable score.)
Bubble Sisters are congratulating him.
(He made a record for the first score.)
Kim Johan received a score of 429.
Please give them
a round of applause.
Singing the song
brought me to a different place.
You received a high score.
I know. Thank you very much.
It would be scary to perform next.
- It would be terrible. / - Seriously.
You don't want to perform next.
- What should I do? / - I have a feeling
Jannabi will go next.
When Shin Yongjae made a record score,
we performed right afterward.
(They were eliminated right away.)
Shin Yongjae.
Then it wouldn't do for you to perform next.
Everyone must be under a lot of pressure,
but this artist must be especially nervous.
Some artists don't eat before the performance
while the others... There you go.
Other singers must eat carbs, protein, or fat
before taking the stage.
Wait a minute. Isn't that ALi?
Is ALi performing next?
Is she eating because she knows that
(Shocked)
she will perform next?
(I don't want to be the next performer.)
She is the queen of Immortal Songs, ALi.
(ALi)
(The ravenous ALi will perform next.)
ALi.
That's incredible.
She was picked right after she ate.
- I know. / - What a timing!
It's only right that ALi performs next.
I am worried that the score
will jump from 429 to 440.
That's what I am worried about.
I plan to enjoy the performance today.
Please enjoy it.
She is the only one who can beat Johan.
The queen of the show, ALi, let's go.
- Good luck. / - Let's go.
I should have finished the sausage bread.
What a waste!
The legend of the day, Richard Marx sang
the song in a commercial at the age of five
and decided to become a singer.
Please tell me how you began to dream
about becoming a singer.
Sejun, how did it start?
- What motivated you? / - To be honest,
Richard Marx influenced me a lot.
When I was in first or second grade,
I fell in love with a song I heard on the radio.
I bought the sheet at a store.
That's how your interest grew.
- The yellow sheet. / - That's right.
I practiced with it.
You bought the sheet. That's how it started.
I loved Elton John.
When I was in sixth grade, he had a concert in Korea.
That's how I decided to be a singer-songwriter.
I don't know why my dad gave a strange answer.
- What was his answer? / - When I asked, he said,
"It's someone who sings with a lighter."
(His dad was joking.)
That's how you came to be in variety shows.
My dad is a funny man.
Hi, it's nice to meet you. I am ALi.
(Her voice makes the heart weep.)
(Her performance is touching.)
(The queen of Immortal Songs, ALi)
I have muscle cramps.
(She is nervous today.)
I can't help but be nervous.
It's my first time seeing a legend from abroad.
I am nervous.
The song I will sing is "Endless Summer Nights".
I focused on the lyrics.
They are about regretting a breakup
and wanting to get back together.
I want to give a memory to remember
on a summer night with Richard Marx's song.
Please enjoy it.
Here comes the third performer, ALi.
(Part 2 will resume soon.)
Here comes the third performer, ALi.
(The third performance by ALi)
(ALi)
I will say hello before I start singing.
Hi, nice to meet you.
My name is ALi.
I'm am the queen of this program.
Enjoy the show. Thank you.
("Endless Summer Nights" by ALi)
(A summer night's song you want to keep hearing)
("Endless Summer Nights" by ALi)
(Everyone is charmed by ALi's performance.)
ALi!
Like the title, the song reminded us
of a cool summer night.
Richard Marx wrote this song
when he traveled to Hawaii with his girlfriend.
The lights seemed like a Hawaiian rainbow.
The top she was wearing
looked like it was dancing in the Hawaiian breeze.
I thought she'd be nervous,
but she just went out there
and showed everyone who she was.
You can't hear that kind of voice in Korea.
- You're right. / - Her voice, when she hits
the high notes, doesn't sound strained.
- It's like a diamond. / - It is.
You're saying she has a unique voice.
Yes, exactly.
Yunkyunl, what did you think?
I lost confidence.
- Why? / - Why?
I thought maybe we could win today.
They were too strong.
I called my mom earlier.
- What did you tell her? / - I'll do well today.
You should call your mom again.
"Mom, I'll do well next time."
(ALi versus Kim Johan)
What did you think of ALi's performance?
I couldn't think of, really,
anything except I kept watching you
and thinking she's such a small girl
with such a big voice.
It was really powerful. I loved the arrangement.
- Thank you very much. / - You did a great job.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Wasn't it hard to sing
in English in front of a legend?
How was it?
At first, I just thought I'd express my feelings.
I thought I'd share the Korean soul.
But after actually seeing him,
I started worrying about delivering the lyrics.
I wanted to deliver the beautiful words.
I just hope the lyrics got through to him.
It was a wonderful performance.
Thank you.
A score of 429 broke the record.
(Johan set the highest score.)
What was it like in the waiting room?
Nobody wanted to come out and perform.
They didn't want it to be their turn.
429?
Oh, my gosh! He'll win against everyone.
Everyone panicked.
But you were picked to perform after Johan.
Will ALi return
to the waiting room and eat her pastry
or will she stay here and eat it later?
Let's see whom the audience has chosen.
Let's see the result.
(The result)
(ALi versus Kim Johan)
("Right Here Waiting")
(in rhythm and blues style)
He received a record-breaking score of 429.
Will Kim Johan continue his winning streak?
(He earned the highest score on the first match.)
(A woman's farewell, "Endless Summer Nights")
She's the queen of Immortal Songs.
Will ALi win against Kim Johan?
(Will ALi be the new winner?)
(Richard Marx couldn't take his eyes off her.)
(Richard Marx praised Johan as a great singer.)
(Who will be the winner?)
(ALi versus Kim Johan)
(Kim Johan)
(Johan makes a heart shape.)
(Johan wins again.)
He's too strong.
With a score of 429,
Johan wins against ALi.
He is on a winning streak.
(The next performers look weary.)
- Gosh. / - That's amazing.
We already expected it'd be a tough competition.
I will now pick our fourth performer.
Dongyeop is picking the fourth performer.
Who will it be?
- It has to be Nakjoon. / - Nakjoon should go.
Today's legend,
Richard Marx is charmed by this vocalist.
He sang Richard Marx's song for an audition program
and received the highest score.
Richard saw the video and left
a glowing review on his social networking site.
It's the sentimental balladeer Nakjoon.
(Nakjoon)
Nakjoon!
(A vocalist praised by a legend)
Look, Nakjoon.
He stole your impersonation talent.
He stole "Right Here Waiting".
So, you should steal his victory.
You can't lose this time.
- Let's go. / - Let's go.
Please say a word.
I've always wanted to sing
in front of Richard Marx someday.
I'm so happy I got this chance.
Great. Please surprise Richard Marx once more.
Also surprise the viewers of Immortal Songs.
- Nakjoon, go for it! / - Let's go!
- You can do it. / - Good luck.
(He's excited.)
Good luck.
They showed a powerful performance.
Bubble Sisters is back.
(The powerfully harmonious Bubble Sisters is back.)
It was a great performance.
It was powerful and exciting.
- I really enjoyed it. / - Thank you.
He won't forget your name because it's in English.
That's right.
"Bubble Sisters. Wonderful."
He made a lot of compliments.
Did he ask you to come with him to America?
I wish he did, but he didn't.
He said we all have different voices,
but we're harmonious.
- He's very detailed. / - Yes.
He said in detail.
- Jiyoung cried. / - Why?
He gave us a standing ovation.
When she walked down the stage, she cried.
- I see. / - Don't cry.
- She cried back stage. / - Did you cry?
I should've studied English harder.
(I feel the same.)
- Why? / - I wanted to talk to him.
All I could say was, "I'm fine. Thank you."
I'm sure he saw your face and understood you.
What made you become a singer?
Was there a special reason
- you became a singer? / - I was actually
a fan of Bubble Sisters.
(Rangshow was a fan of Bubble Sisters.)
You started out as a fan?
- I'm a successful fan. / - Really?
I went to watch them record live shows.
I asked them, "How can I become a singer?"
They taught me how to sing.
Did they ask you to be a member?
Not at the time.
They were my producers.
I was with a different group.
- Now you're with them. / - Yes.
(A successful fan)
Hello, I'm Nakjoon.
("Right Here Waiting" by Nakjoon)
(on "K-pop Star 3")
The score is... It's 100!
Bernard Park!
Congratulations!
(Richard Marx was touched by Bernard Park.)
(The sentimental vocalist praised by the legend)
I really wanted to be on this show.
When I heard Richard Marx was coming,
I wanted to make a dash to come here
and sing right away.
I sang Richard Marx's song for an audition
and people really loved it.
So, I want to thank him.
Richard Marx will be here
and I'm so happy that I'll sing in front of him.
I'm really nervous.
I prepared a lot for today.
I hope you love it.
Here comes the fourth performer, Nakjoon.
(The fourth performance by Nakjoon)
(Nakjoon)
Hello, I'm Nakjoon.
Seriously, Mr. Marx, it's such an honor to be
able to stand here in front of you.
I feel like, through that song,
it really did help me.
I really wanted to thank you for being
such a great inspiration to a lot of people
and releasing amazing music.
It is a big honor to be here.
(An honorable moment)
("Hold on to the Nights" by Nakjoon)
("Hold on to the Nights" by Nakjoon)
Thank you.
(People clap and cheer for Nakjoon.)
- Amazing. / - All right.
"Hold on to the Nights" by Nakjoon.
His voice sounds like clarinet.
Bubble Sisters, what did you think?
He didn't embellish the song.
- That's right. / - But it touched me.
- It was moving. / - Yes.
He didn't use any fancy instruments.
There weren't many vocalists like us.
But the stage was full.
His voice was very calming.
- I could feel it. / - I agree.
Ben, what did you think?
I really loved it.
It was sort of a British style.
- British style? / - Yes.
He doesn't look like he's trying,
but he has a strong voice.
- He's so awesome. / - Will he win?
I think so.
Actress Ko Hyunjung said she was his big fan.
Women like Nakjoon a lot.
(Just hearing his name makes my heart flutter.)
(Nakjoon versus Kim Johan)
After watching Nakjoon's video,
Richard Marx left a huge praise
on his social networking site.
Did you know that this was the same guy?
You know, I'm a fan.
I heard you sing. Was that two years ago?
- It was two or three years ago. / - Yes.
It was emotional for me. I thought that what you...
I believed you. I thought,
"Did I write that song or did he write that song?"
It was so powerfully done.
I love your voice.
- I love this performance. / - Thank you so much.
You're an incredible singer.
I joked to the press today.
They asked me about your performance today.
I said, "He kind of makes me mad."
Because I think you sing it better than I do.
He made such a huge praise.
You sang in front of Richard Marx.
How do you feel?
I've never been nervous like this.
You can say that I became a singer
thanks to Richard Marx.
I never thought I'd be able
to sing in front of him ever.
It's a wonderful experience.
Richard said he was a big fan
of them both.
They both received high praises.
Let's see whom the audience has chosen.
Let's see the result.
(The result)
(Nakjoon versus Kim Johan)
(The soul of rhythm and blues)
It's a competition between two Korean Americans.
Will Kim Johan continue his winning streak?
(Will he continue his winning streak?)
(The sentimental vocalist)
Will Nakjoon win against Kim Johan
on his first appearance?
(Will he win on his first appearance?)
- Let's see! / - Let's see!
(Who will be the winner?)
Goodness.
(Kim Johan)
Kim Johan.
Johan steals Nakjoon's thunder and wins.
Johan continues his winning streak!
(He wins with a score of 429!)
(I learned a lot.)
Please give them a big hand again.
I will now pick
our fifth and sixth performers.
This person says there's a show he wants
to be on before being on Immortal Songs.
He worries a lot about how to make
a great performance on Immortal Songs.
So, he wants to share his worry with "Hello".
They're a fantastic duo.
They're Ben and Im Sejun.
(Ben and Im Sejun)
Im Sejun.
(It's Ben and Sejun's turn.)
You're the fifth performers.
Please say a word.
We'll be singing the opening song Richard sang.
"Now and Forever"?
- Yes. / - Really?
I hope the legend will like it.
We rearranged the song,
so we can console the listeners.
We'll do our best. Thank you.
- Let's go! / - Great.
- Ben and Im Sejun. / - Good luck!
- Go for it! / - Good luck.
- Let's go. / - Good luck.
- Let's go. / - Go for it.
He stole every woman's heart.
- The amazing performer... / - Nakjoon is back.
(Nakjoon is back in the waiting room.)
You made a lot of fans here.
- Really? / - They love your voice.
How was it to be on stage?
- On stage? / - Yes.
I felt like I was auditioning again.
He was the first celebrity to acknowledge me.
- You were touched. / - Yes.
Thank you for your amazing performance.
I hope to see you more.
You were great today.
(Hope to see you often.)
- Hello, I'm Ben. / - Hello, I'm Im Sejun.
It's good to see you.
(A beautiful harmony made by a duo)
(Sometimes like friends, sometimes like lovers)
(They win a trophy on)
("Park Jeongun and Kim Minwoo Special".)
(Ben and Im Sejun)
You recognize his songs
when you hear the melody. He's that famous.
I was so surprised to hear that he'd be on the show.
I'm nervous more than ever.
We will sing "Now and Forever".
We'll do our best since we're singing a classic.
I hope the song will console the listeners.
Thank you.
Here come the fifth performers,
Ben and Im Sejun.
(The fifth performance by Ben and Im Sejun)
(Im Sejun and Ben)
We're going to sing "Now and Forever".
We changed the lyrics a little bit.
We changed them from "I will be your man"
to "I will be your friend".
Those words were changed
in hopes of consoling people in trouble.
I hope you enjoy the song.
("Now and Forever" by Ben and Im Sejun)
(I'll always be there for you.)
("Now and Forever" by Ben and Im Sejun)
- Thank you. / - Thank you.
They turned the song into a fairy tale.
The beautiful harmony at the beginning was amazing.
- Yes, that's right. / - It's ringing in my ears.
How did you enjoy it, Nakjoon?
Sejun has a thick voice,
whereas Ben's voice is thin and high-pitched.
They complemented each other when singing chords.
I think the arrangement was a little different.
I felt as if I was watching a Fairytale movie.
I'd like to ask Bubble Sisters.
What did you think of it?
The audience must've loved it so much
especially because of the change in the lyrics.
It must've given them much solace.
- It was healing. / - Yes, exactly.
Jannabi, whom do you think you'll compete against?
I think we'll end up competing against Johan.
- Johan? / - They did so well though.
I've been thinking Johan would win no matter what,
but I think he's faced with the hardest hurdle.
(Ben and Im Sejun versus Kim Johan)
What did you think of Ben and Sejun's performance?
All the different arrangements
and reinventions of my songs tonight, you know.
You guys came up with versions that I never
would've imagined, and I wrote these songs.
But I never would've pictured
"Now and Forever" done that way.
Beautiful harmonies. You have beautiful voices.
I loved hearing you sing together.
Great job. Really powerful.
- Thank you. / - My gosh.
(Thank you.)
Among Richard's many greatest hits,
this one is by far the most beloved song
in Korea.
So how did you come up with this beautiful tune?
Well, I wrote this song
in the early 90s.
It was a very personal song at the time.
Every time I do it here in Korea,
everybody sings along.
I can't wait to come back in October
and perform it myself.
On October 12, 14, and 15,
his concert will be held in Incheon, Seoul,
and Busan.
I hope all of you get to go and experience it.
During the opening,
Richard performed the song himself.
After watching his performance,
you guys must've had a mental breakdown.
How did you feel earlier?
At first, we thought,
"Should we go home? Shall we sing something else?"
We actually thought that.
We desperately hoped for one thing though.
Since he sang at the opening,
we really didn't want to go first.
That's right.
- It's the same song. / - It would've been bad.
They've been doing very well on our show lately,
and they've won too.
They're certainly such strong contenders.
Will Johan be able to take his fourth win?
Or will Ben and Sejun stop his winning streak?
Let's see whom the audience has chosen.
Please show us the result.
(The result)
(Will their harmony stop the winning streak?)
(Will he win and move on to the final match?)
(Whom would the audience choose?)
(The audience chose Kim Johan.)
It's Kim Johan.
All right.
Johan is beginning to really scare me.
With the score of 429,
- he took his fourth win. / - My gosh.
I was thinking that it might be hard
for Johan to win this time.
In a way, we can say
that Jannabi's big picture is becoming complete.
- Do you think you'll win? / - Gosh, this is...
All we have to do is win just this once, you know.
Go, Jannabi.
You said that we could win if we're lucky.
Yes, you guys are going last.
Hence, I prayed.
- What did you pray for? / - "Please help us win."
(Please help us if my voice reached you.)
I prayed to win.
- That's how much / - Right.
- you want to win. / - They really want to win.
I hope you guys win
and make the trophy yours as well.
- Jannabi, best of luck! / - Best of luck!
(You can do it, Jannabi!)
Through performing with globally famous artists
like Madonna, Whitney Houston and so on,
Richard Marx has proven his worldwide popularity.
ALi, you've performed with global stars too.
I performed with Paul Potts on this show.
I sang with him when he came on the show.
(Their performance deeply touched everyone.)
Nakjoon, whom have you performed with on stage?
Prior to my debut,
- I performed with Suzy. / - Oh, Suzy.
- I see, Suzy. / - My gosh, Suzy.
- At our agency's concert. / - How was it?
Before I got nervous, I called my buddy in the US.
"Hey, I'll be singing with Suzy."
Did you brag about it to your friend?
I had to brag about it.
What a chance.
Hello, it's nice to meet you all. We're Jannabi.
- It's nice to meet you. / - Hello.
Rock and roll.
(Unique style of music)
(They're superb musicians.)
(The band, Jannabi)
I was amazed.
I couldn't believe I'd be singing in front of him.
He's a legendary singer, you know.
The song we'll be singing
is "Don't Mean Nothing" by Richard Marx.
In this song, you can hear the rock band sounds
from the 80s and 90s.
We used to love songs of this style as teenagers,
so it'll be like a tribute performance.
We'll win this once
and have a glorious ending.
- Jannabi, let's go! / - Let's go!
Please welcome the sixth performers, Jannabi.
(The sixth performance by Jannabi)
(Jannabi)
(You guys are the best.)
("Don't Mean Nothing" by Jannabi)
Everyone, put your hands up and clap along!
The guitar.
The piano. Give him a big hand, please!
Let's dance!
Thank you.
(The liberating sounds of youth)
("Don't Mean Nothing" by Jannabi)
As always, it was such a fun performance.
Their reinterpretations are always so interesting.
Nakjoon, what did you think of it?
It was awesome to see them having fun together.
Yes, totally.
- They're always so witty. / - That's right.
They gave another witty performance today.
What I really enjoyed
is how they sent me on a trip
down the memory lane like they always do.
They didn't look like a Korean band.
They looked like
- a British band. / - I agree.
Ben, what did you think of it?
They looked so free.
It made me jealous.
I was fascinated by it as I can't be like that.
I heard they were all born in the Year of the Monkey,
so I asked them if they were born in 1980.
They said they were born in 1992.
You thought they were the same age as you.
"My gosh, were you guys born in 1980?"
And they said, "No way!"
"We were born in 1992."
(Do we look older than our age?)
(Jannabi versus Kim Johan)
Jannabi's performance was so exciting and fun.
I'd like to know how you enjoyed it.
I'd also like to ask you how you feel
now that you've watched all of the performances.
I thought it was great,
and I love that you guys are a band.
You guys play your own instruments.
You're all individually really good,
but as a band, you're really fun to watch.
The funny thing was that I was watching you guys,
and none of you were born when I wrote that song.
It made me feel a hundred years old.
(It was written 5 years before they were born.)
Hearing my songs reinvented in a way
that I would never have imagined
was such a blast. I loved it.
The talent on the stage tonight
was incredibly impressive,
and I hope that I get a chance to work
with all of these artists at some point.
I was terribly impressed with all of them
and just had a great time with you guys tonight.
(It's an honorable moment for the performers too.)
Johan.
One more light means you beat everyone today.
You must want it.
I got to meet Richard in person today,
and I had a great time with the younger artists.
I thought the fun of performing the song
would be enough,
but I do want to win now.
(Victory is mine.)
Part 3 of 2017 Summer Special with Richard Marx.
Only the final result awaits us now.
With the score of 429, Johan
broke the record for the highest first round score.
He sure has been on a winning streak so far.
Will he win again and become the final winner?
Or will Jannabi, who performed the finale,
dramatically end up winning the trophy?
Let's see whom the audience has chosen.
Show us the result!
(Jannabi versus Kim Johan)
Part 3 of 2017 Summer Special with Richard Marx.
Will Johan take his fifth win with 429 votes
and set a new record as the final winner?
(The young, witty band)
(Will they dramatically win the trophy?)
Will the band, Jannabi, be able to make
their dream come true and take their first win?
- Let's see! / - Let's see!
(Next week)
(Namjin, Na Hoona, Lee Mija, and so on)
(Top singers' mega hits were created by him.)
(He has the most number of monuments)
(dedicated to him.)
(The Lyrical Poet, Lyricist Jeong Doosoo)
(His songs have been like gifts to us.)
(The greatest hits we missed will echo again.)
(The duo that brought the "Sweetheart" craze)
(They come to Immortal Songs.)
(Seenroot)
(The indie band that's been causing a sensation)
(Their exciting, captivating performance)
(Here comes Nam Sangil!)
(Get out of my way!)
(He's finally back.)
(Korean traditional musician, Nam Sangil)
(He'll excite us with his traditional music.)
(His mom said that Bonggu is very talented.)
(But she thinks her son is most handsome.)
(Bonggu lost.)
(But when it comes to singing, he can't lose.)
(His powerful voice explodes on stage.)
(His performance will captivate everyone.)
(We'll make your summer even hotter!)
(The energy that made everyone go wild)
(Korea's most famous band, Boohwal)
(The greatest hits that you were smitten by)
(will be revived once again.)
(The Lyrical Poet, Lyricist Jeong Doosoo)
(Who will win the trophy today?)
(The audience chose Kim Johan.)
It's Kim Johan.
Amazing.
Setting a record for the highest first round score,
as well as for beating all performers,
Johan takes the trophy.
Congratulations.
(Kim Johan is the final winner.)
Here's your trophy.
Please give him another big round of applause.
I've been a big fan of the song since I was young.
I reminisced those days as I was singing it.
I think that's the charm of the song,
and it's what makes the singer charming.
I'm truly grateful for the experience.
Thank you.

Transposing Down by a Fifth - Keyboard Harmony - Duration: 5:35.
Greetings Everyone! There will be a QUIZ at the end of this video.
Now that we have recovered from our "marathon" of transposing the
major scale upward by perfect fifths, through the seven sharp keys – see previous videos
– we are ready to move in the other direction; 'whatever goes up must come down' and
all that – this one will be as easy and painless as "A B C." Rather, "C, B, A."
If we begin with the lower tetrachord of C
Major – [play C D E F] – we have the start of a new series of transpositions. How
so? Keep watching! Since the two tetrachords of every major scale follow the
same pattern [W W S], this one can become the upper tetrachord of a new scale as well.
So let's now play this tetrachord in the RH, and play it descending, starting with
RH finger 4: [F E D C]. Played descending, the intervals of the tetrachord are backwards:
semitone, whole-tone, whole-tone. Now, the new, lower tetrachord, continuing
to descend backwards through the musical alphabet, must begin at a whole-tone below C, which
is NOT B natural [B], but B-flat [Bb].
Continue descending backwards through the musical alphabet, according to the pattern:
semitone [A], whole-tone [G], and whole-tone [F]. There we have the lower
tetrachord of F Major! [Bb A G F] So the entire F scale, descending backwards,
is [F E D C Bb A G F] or [F S W W] then [Bb S W W]. Played ascending,
F Major scale is [F G A Bb | C D E F]; and we're back to our familiar tetrachord pattern:
W W S. Now for a piano-keyboard QUIZ.
