Solar Eclipse Souvenir Broach Woodturning - Duration: 6:43.Hi, Alan Stratton, from As Wood Turns.
(www.AsWoodTurns.com) We have a once in a lifetime event coming
up with solar eclipse coming on Monday.
An event where the moon passes between the sun and the earth and it gets mighty dark.
I live a little bit south of the zone of totality as call it.
So I'm going to go north.
To commemorate that event, I am going to make this broach., this will symbolize the eclipse
for a long time even though the event is going to be over quickly and not return for a long
time.
The white disk represents the earth with texturing using the infinite axis chuck and a band of
totality as the moon moves between the sun and the earth.
Here is the moon texture to give a "man in the moon" who is totally amazed at the
fuss we're making over his passage.
I did use the Infinite Axis Chuck.
I am shortly going to have a kit put together that will have all the components for the
chuck.
But, for now, let's make a broach, sticking to business, make this broach to represent
the eclipse of 2017.
To start, I'm mounting a piece of hazelnut wood with double stick tape to the work platform
for my Infinite Axis Chuck.
The work platform is held in the jaws of a scroll chuck.
My objective here is to flatten what will become the back side of the broach.
I'm cutting it round then sanding it flat.
I have a wood cover that I've shaped to fit over my live center.
This provides pressure without having a point punch into the wood.
My sanding board helps to have a uniform flat surface.
Now I have the work platform mounted to the Infinite Axis Chuck.
I've wrapped the edge of my disk with masking tape and have gently mounted it in the jaws
of a scroll chuck.
Then with a spindle to morse taper adapter, I've mounted the chuck to the tail stock.
This will center the disk better than my eyeballs.
Again, I'm mounting the disk to the work platform with double stick tape.
Next, I need to smooth the background of the front side of the broach.
Then sand it through 400 grit.
Now I can shift the position for my first mini feature.
The live center points to the middle, then cinch up the PVC threads good and tight.
A sharp spindle gouge and a careful touch cuts the feature.
I forgot to sand this feature.
After shifting to a new position, I did not tighten the chuck sufficiently and it shifted.
I'll just have to cut some more features to cover the damage.
Then on to cut more features.
Some overlapping some not.
I'm trying to cover the surface with texture.
This disk represents the earth, so these features simulate mountings, rivers, whatever.
It's rather abstract.
For each feature.
I loosen the PVC joint, bring up the tail stock to indicate where the feature center
is, tighten the PVC joint, carefully cut the feature, carefully sand the feature, and repeat.
My pattern here is random.
With the "earth" disk complete, I now need the "moon" disk.
To start with I've mounted the work platform to my scroll chuck to flatten and round the
back side of the moon.
I'll sand it now through 400 grit.
The wood plug on the tailstock provide safe pressure to hold the disk against the double
stick tape.
This time I'm trusting my eyeballs to center the disk when I reverse it onto new double
stick tape.
This is the front side of the moon.
I'm rounding over the edges then sanding through the grits.
Now I'm mounting the work platform to the Infinite Axis Chuck to create my Man in the
Moon.
With the same process as on the Earth piece, I'm cutting two eyes for the moon and a
mouth.
He seems amazed at what he sees down here.
The eclipse will be a once in a lifetime event.
My broach is a reminder of the event.
If you are watching the eclipse, please remember to not look at the sun without specifically
prepared protection – kind of like wearing your full face shield while wood turning.
Now I want to mark the path of totality for the eclipse.
I'm using a mini torch to lightly burn the path.
I'm also burning the year on the front as well as signing the back.
After applying shellac, I buffed both disks.
Then I assembled the clip finding with E6000 glues with a little more to attach the moon
to the earth.
That's all for my broach.
Please give this video a thumbs up, subscribe and tell your friends.
Always wear your full face shield –goggles are not enough protection.
Until next week, this is Alan Stratton from As Wood Turns dot com.
Come back next week for a new video.

"If you feel pity for me, give me money"
An hourly wage of 780 Yen
it's busy serving society
Aiming for 10 billion
It's grabbing onto us
"Poverty Cha Cha Cha"
Everyone, everyone
says those empty words
"There are things money can't buy"
Fuck off
How much value
does my life have?
Give me money!
I want money!
Those who beg for money are dancing, aren't they?
Yukichi-sama
Hideyo-sama
are smiling at me
Eating crab!
Eating sushi!
Please, towards me who dreams
of playing throughout the night
"If you feel pity for me, give me money"
Give me money!
A storm of debt
it's a lifelong depression
There are no guarantees in life
There's more to this world than money
Who can question it?
Give me money!
I want money!
Mr. Wealthy, give me money
Say that it's "Not a problem"
Crying in gold
Laughing in gold
A path of practicality over aesthetic
In my dreams at night
I'm the demon-slayer of ranks and stability
"If you feel pity for me, give me money"

Personal Hygiene and Disease Control in the Philippines - Duration: 7:25.Personal Hygiene and Disease Control in the Philippines
You're probably wondering how on earth I could make an issue out of personal hygiene
amongst Filipinos, right?
This is a country full of sweet-smelling and clean people, no question about it.
Despite the tropical heat, you very rarely smell a stinky armpit!
No one wears dirty clothes with stains.
No one has dirty shoes.
Schoolkids go to school with toothbrushes and toothpaste for after lunch.
And ladies generally take care of their "lady-areas" very well, and that's all I'll say on
that subject.
Yes, the level of personal hygiene has long impressed me here.
When you would see girls walking out of slum areas on the way to work looking immaculate,
and kids school uniforms crisp and white.
I think of my years as a single dad, and never working out how someone could get sweat stains
out of collars.
My boys school shirts always had stains, but then as a parent in Australia I wasn't alone.
Wouldn't cut it here in the Philippines at all!
But the issue for this article is not with body-cleanliness matters, but more about avoiding
sharing disease and infection from one person to another, and it's something that Australian
Filipina couples should be aware of.
Sharing diseases in the Philippines Blunt heading, but this is the issue!
Filipinos are a bit too relaxed when it comes to controlling the spread of bacteria and
diseases amongst each other.
The Philippines has a high incidence of Hepatitis.
Hepatitis B, 1 in 7 adults in the Philippines have it!
This compares with about 1 in 100 in Australia.
There's also Hepatitis A and Hepatitis C, Tuberculosis and rising rates of HIV.
This is accentuated by poverty, of course.
Filipinos have a habit of sharing food and drink with each other, and this is a great
way to spread disease!
Hep B and TB can be spread by saliva!
Drink out of the same bottle or dip your saliva-covered utensils or eating-fingers into the same plate
or "banana leaf" of food, and you most definitely WILL share saliva with others.
And people do this all the time.
Filipinos are a sociable people, and sharing food is as natural as breathing.
Arrive anywhere when food is being eaten, and you will be invited to share it.
Comment on what a Filipino is eating, and they will offer you some and expect you to
dig right in.
And the same thing when you are eating something, don't be too surprised if someone wants
to taste it.
And small children, ie. those under 10, are often fed very informally by whoever is there.
If a child is in reach, it's normal practice to get a bit of food off your plate (by utensils
or eating-fingers) and stick it in the child's mouth.
And if the child wants something you are eating, don't be too surprised to find that small
child with mouth open in front of you.
I'm not comfortable with this for a number of reasons, and spread of disease is one of
them.
For any of you with kids here in Philippines, you absolutely must train them not to share
food or drink with their friends at school.
Taking a bite of what someone else is eating, or drinking from someone else's cup or bottle
is very common.
My girls will tend to just give the bottle to the other kid and say "keep it", because
fortunately they listened to me.
And no one is allowed to feed our kids from their plates.
The kitchen sink This is another area that tends to trouble
me, and is why I've insisted that everyone in our household washes hands in the bathroom
and not in the kitchen sink.
And let me explain why this can lead to disease.
Has everyone heard of E. coli?
I think most know that this is a bacteria which is quite capable of causing you to be
very ill, and in some cases even kill you.
Some issues?
It comes from fecal matter, ie. it comes from poo.
And that means you wash your hands after using the toilet and you may have poo under your
nails.
It's known as a thermotolerant coliform.
A "coliform" is a type of bacteria, and thermotolerant means it tolerates hotter-than-normal
heat.
In fact you need to subject it to 70 degrees Celcius for a couple of minutes to kill it.
And that's pretty hot!
And before you think that washing in hot water will control E. coli, you can't wash up
in 70 degree water!
You can tolerate 42 – 44 degree water, and that's about it!
The issue is therefore that washing your toilet-hands in the kitchen sink, realize you or someone
in the household could end up sick as a result.
And it's not just E. coli.
There are plenty of ordinary bacteria from dirty hands from ordinary daily activity that
you would be better off not on the drinking glasses.
I hope this article prompts a bit of awareness of this issue, and
that it leads to a few positive changes.

3 Ways to Build Confidence | JOURNAL IDEAS - Duration: 4:25.Hi everyone, today I am going to show you 3 ways you can practice self love to become
a confident person.
More often than not, I find myself excited for a project and then when it comes time
to start, I don't.
Instead, I watch and research other people's work and compare what I have not yet done
to what they have already accomplished.
I then lose confidence in myself, doubt my abilities, and then lose motivation.
So, since I want this habit to end, I need to start creating a new healthy productive habit.
The First exercise is to create a list of your top 5 to 10 accomplishments in the last year.
They can vary in size from minor to major.
but the most important thing is that you are proud of them.
I am going to take some of my lists a step further by drawing them into some sort of imagery.
You don't have to do this, but give it a try and see where it takes you if you want.
I am pretty sure that I am going to make many spellings errors, but that's okay, no one
is supposed to read this but me and you guys if you hit the pause button.
Now read each answer out loud and let them sink into your space.
The Second exercise is to create a list of 5 things you appreciate in your life.
Many of you probably heard about the gratitude list, this takes it a step further.
Gratitude is simply the the quality of being thankful while appreciation is recognition
of the value, significance, or magnitude of people and things
basically how it makes us feel and how we benefit from the things we found grateful for.
This will help weed out the negatives and focus on the positives and how it has affected you.
So, for example, I am thankful for knowing the love my dad for 27 years
I've inherited his sense of humor and drive for success and that motivates me to accomplish my goals in
order make him proud, up above.
While you are writing these, pause between each line to embrace each item.
We can get caught up on things that go wrong and those can overshadow all the things that
went right.
And if we learn to enhance those little positive moments and laugh at the things that go wrong,
everyday would be a good day.
Now for the third exercise to write down all of your fears.
What is stopping you from being productive?
Why are you comparing yourself and work to others?
Do you feel like you are not good enough, that your work is subpar compared to others?
Or will you be embarrassed?
Read these out loud and think of positive sides to the fears and then write them down
on another page.
So for example: I am afraid of starting because I don't think that I'll produce a quality
video people want to watch.
I am not good enough and I am boring.
The twist on that would be: I am going to produce a good quality video that people will
watch, I am good enough.
And if I fail, then I will try again because I can.
Use these as your personal positive affirmations before you start your projects or in the morning
when you get up.
Believe me, starting off the day on a positive note will help you gain confidence
throughout your life.
I am taking one of my positive affirmations and turning it into poster that I can place
on my desk or hang on my wall as a reminder to believe in myself.
Again, if you want, you can do this too and see where it leads.
Be creative, make a collage if you can't draw, or simply type it out or write it out
into a poster.
Surprise yourself and try.
You are special, there is no one in the world identical to you,
so embrace your journey, the ups and downs, but most importantly, you have to take the first step
I hope this video helped you to realize that you are capable of change, of learning, and
of becoming more confident.
I am happy that I can share my struggles with you and help inspire you along the way.
Thank you so much for watching and I'll see you next time!
Bye!
