EASY HACK for asking questions in English | LEARN ENGLISH - Duration: 5:24.
I discovered this hack when I was studying abroad for the first time and
wasn't able to formulate questions in English very well. And it was VERY useful to
me and, for this reason, I think it might be useful to you too.
Well, you probably know already that to ask questions in English,
we usually have to change the order of words, use auxiliary
verbs and cut some Ss, right?
So, for instance, to change the
statement "You are Brazilian" into a question, you put the verb "to be"
before the "you", so: "Are you Brazilian?"
It's easy with the verb "to be."
It gets a little more complicated when you want to ask a question that includes a
verb other than the verb "to be." So, for instance, "She likes him" in the
interrogative form would be" "Does she like him?"
So you have to put the auxiliary verb
in the beginning, cut the S from "like" and I know that for many people whose
English is advanced, this may seem very easy, but I also know that for beginners and
even for intermediate students, this is not as easy as it seems,
especially when we're speaking English because we don't have
time to think, so we end up committing some mistakes.
I hear a lot of people saying, for example, "Does she likeS him?" and forget to
cut the S when using the auxiliary verb.
With that in mind, I'd like
to share a hack with you that I've used for a long time - and
I still use it because it's a correct way to ask questions in English.
And this hack consists of adding a magic little word to the end of a
statement, changing it into a question. It's that simple!
So, going back to the last example, in the statement "She likes him,"
the conventional way to ask the question
is "Does she like him?" But if you have trouble doing
this inversion and cutting the S, an easier way is to add
the magic word "right?" to the end of the statement.
You simply say: "She likes him, right?"
And this "right?" is nothing more than our "né?" in Portuguese. So, in Portuguese: "Ela gosta dele, né?"
You may be thinking: "ok, but this
hack only works with Yes/No questions. How about the
questions that start with "onde"/"como"/"quando," when/how/where, for instance?
The good news is that you can also use this hack
when you want to know where, how, when, etc.
You only need a little imagination.
So, for example, you're walking in New York City and you want to find the Grand Central Station.
So you stop someone to ask for directions. You can ask the question in the
conventional way, doing the inversion or you can simply guess where the
Grand Central Station is and force the person to explain where it it. So, you could
very well say the sentence: "The Grand Central Station is that way, right?"
And then, the person would still explain where the Grand Central Station is, even if you
don't use "where" or, in other cases, "when," "how" or "what."
So, as you can see, it's a very versatile hack that can be used in many
situations, even in other languages as well, one that comes to mind is
French that also has inversion. So instead of doing the inversion, you
can use the magic word in French: "n'est-ce-pas?" In fact, it's
more than a word, but oh well. And in English, you can even use it
in the Present Perfect, so instead of saying, for example:
"Have you been to Brazil?" You can say" "You've been to Brazil, right?"
But then, the picky ones out there
could be thinking: "ok, but 'Have you been to Brazil?' and
'You've been to Brazil, right?' don't mean exactly the same thing. And it's true. The sentence
"Have you been to Brazil?" means that you
have not idea whether the person has been to Brazil or not. And "You've been to Brazil, right?"
means that you want a confirmation.
But this small difference in meaning doesn't demerit the usefulness of the hack
if you still don't know how to formulate questions with the inversion when you're
speaking English.

Kind of a full circle for me. I actually grew up on titan
It's about three or four blocks ago, so when the name came up, Linden Park
I was on it right away the conversation came up about needing volunteers for Linden and
one of the gentlemen walked by John Duffy
And he asked do we know anybody from the linear like we both grew up in the indonesian
area and it would've been our pleasure to come out here and help out create the opportunity for us to come back and
Kind of give something back to the community where I know that help is needed local matters is an organization that
Talks about sustainable food sources, but also the wrong term benefits of eating healthy, and there's no better way to talk about it
It's actually showing, so these gardens are a great step towards the education of kids we teach children and adults
What healthy food is how to grow it how to cook it and how to access it affordably whenever we install a garden?
It's really with the intent to have education year-round and they'll be able to see how food grows
And knowing that it doesn't come and grow up from the supermarket. It's a big an important lesson for kids
You know as early as possible, whoever can avoid died related diseases, and so we feel that the younger
We start the better chance we have of setting kids up with a lifetime of healthy eating habits
I was just hoping for a couple of planting beds, so the kids could grow their own
fruits and vegetables that was our initial planning
