Waching daily Aug 20 2017

hi everybody its mr. Duncan in England it's Sunday afternoon and this is live English

here we go again

it is Sunday once more and we are live on YouTube for a Sunday afternoon here

in the UK five minutes past two o'clock I'm very sorry I think today I was about

two minutes late I do apologise for that things are a little bit chaotic here

today for various reasons not least of all because I've just returned from a

short break so everything here is a little bit disorganised you know what

it's like when you've had a holiday it takes a very long time to get back to

normal do you find that when you've had a holiday when you've had a break away

from your normal routine you normally find that it's very hard to get back

into the normal way of doing things so here we are today it's mr. Duncan that's

me that is my name is mr. Duncan for those who don't know who I am I am

Duncan and I teach English right here on YouTube and guess what I have been doing

this for over ten years I know people don't believe me when I tell them I've

been teaching English right here on YouTube for almost in fact

almost 11 years so in October it will be my 11th year on YouTube so I have been

here doing this for quite a long time in fact I am one of the original youtubers

did you know that I am so here we go it is a Sunday and it is Lunn Eve English I

am live here but also you are live there a little bit later on I will be saying

hello to you perhaps who knows so the live chat is now open lots of people

saying hello today I have had a lovely time I've been away I went away for a

few days do you want to know where I went I will show you very briefly where

I've been I went away to a place called Lake Verne we Lake Verne we in Wales a

very beautiful place there you can see the place I was at very scenic very

lovely sometimes it's nice to get away sometimes it's nice to escape for a

while so I went away for about four days and had a lovely relaxing time and one

of the good things about staying in this particular place is that you can't get

any mobile signal so your mobile phone your cellular phone actually doesn't

work in this particular place so it's great if you want to get away from

everything this is the perfect place to go to so this is the place we will be

taking a look at later because I have made a full length lesson right here in

Lake Verne we and of course Wales is a very beautiful

place indeed I love Wales so much in fact I think that Wales is my most

favorite place in the whole of the UK I think so you can see the scenery there

look at that beautiful scenery Wales is very famous for its scenery also its

sheep and lots of other things as well including very good food so I had a

super time I had a wonderful holiday and a little bit later on we will take a

look at a lesson all about Wales and in particular Lake Verne we that is the

place in which I was staying and of course in Wales they have their own

language Welsh although there is a fear that that particular language is slowly

fading away it is slowly disappearing but whilst I was staying at Lake Verne

away I stayed in a lovely hotel and there were some people there who were

Welsh and they were talking at the dinner table in Welch at first I thought

it was another foreign language from maybe Europe or all maybe South America

I wasn't sure but then I realized that it was Welsh so it took me a while to

realize that the language I was listening to at the dinner table was

actually Welsh being spoken so let's have a look the live chat is also up and

running today we have lots of things to do in fact I have a feeling that I have

too many things today too many things to talk about we have the flash phrase

coming a little bit later on some flash phrases and also flash words we also

have the mystery idioms a lot of people now love the mystery idioms they say

here mister can we really like your mystery idioms

so today there will be two more mystery idioms coming today

lots of people already on the live chat thank you very much for joining me today

let us hope that this week YouTube does not interfere with my live stream

because last week I was in the garden with mr. Steve and YouTube cut my

livestream of it wasn't my fault it wasn't my problem it was actually

YouTube's fault in fact YouTube decided to pull the plug

on my live stream last week for a very short time so for those watching last

week I do apologize so pull the plug that is a very interesting phrase if you

pull the plug it means you disconnect something so you

disconnect one thing from another you pull the plug this particular expression

is sometimes used when a person is in a hospital maybe they are very sick maybe

they are dying and they are on a life-support machine Bing Bing Bing and

then perhaps the doctors decide that there is nothing more that can be done

and you have to allow the person to die so you pull the plug so instead of being

Bing you have

I pull the plug I hope no one ever has to pull the plug on me my hope it never

happens so welcome everyone welcome one and all to another live English carnage

'when is here hi mr. Duncan I hope you had a

super-duper weekend I have a really good week because I was away on holiday do

you want to see some more pictures I was at a place called Lake Vyrnwy Lake

Vyrnwy is famous for a very large lake as its name suggests and also there

is a very large dam at Lake Vyrnwy you can see it in that particular photograph

also mr. Steve was hanging around in the hotel although mr. Steve did spend a lot

of time at the bar and there he is there is mr. Steve enjoying a pint of

beer yes mr. Steve does enjoy drinking beer

now and again not often just sometimes so there it is he really does look as if

he's enjoying himself there he looks like he's having a wonderful time with

that that glass of beer so there is mr. Steve enjoying himself there are lots of

places to walk around look at that view isn't that lovely so now I think these

are pine trees so there are lots of pine trees growing around Lake Vyrnwy and

as you can see there some of the pine trees have been cut down but lots of

lovely walks I must admit we did do a lot of walking and of course you can't

have a village without a red telephone box and there is a red telephone box

very near to the lake you see a lot of these around London and

also in some villages so you do see these red telephone boxes around the UK

although nowadays many of them have been replaced by glass telephone boxes there

they are not is attractive as the old-fashioned red boxes I do love the

old telephone boxes sadly in the place I live there isn't one there isn't a

telephone box we don't have one and of course we ate a lot of food during the

holiday you you can't have a holiday without eating have you noticed that

whenever you go away you always tend to eat a lot of food but these particular

types of bread this this bread you can see now in the photograph I think these

pieces of bread look like booms I think they look like bottoms I think they look

a little bit rude do you think so so there were there are some of the things

that we ate some some strange shaped bread which I think looks a little bit

like bums...bottoms oh well I think that's just my mind to be honest so today lots

of questions to ask do you ever lose things do you ever lose things have you

ever lost anything valuable and when we say valuable it can mean something that

you treasure or something that is very expensive so when we use the word

valuable valuable can mean more than one thing it can mean something that is very

expensive or it can mean something that means a lot to you so a valuable item

can have sentimental value we can say that something has

sentimental value so do you ever lose things

to be honest I'm always losing things I am I'm always putting things down and

then later I can't find them for example this morning this morning can you

believe it I lost my mobile phone I couldn't find it anywhere so I was

looking around the house trying to find my mobile phone fortunately I did manage

to find it so here it is now in my hand but sometimes we do we do tend to lose

things so do you ever lose things sometimes you can lose things for a

short period of time and sometimes you can lose it or lose something forever

permanently if you lose something for a short time we can say that you miss

Leigh something you miss Leigh it so miss Leigh means to lose something for a

very short time miss Leigh so if you miss Leigh something it means you lose

it but only for a short time and then you find it again like my mobile phone

so this morning i mislaid my mobile phone live-chat is very busy today thank

you very much so many people on the live chat so here we are at 20 past two on a

Sunday afternoon and we have lots of people talking on the live chat shrim

ibrahim is here hello Sharon thanks for joining me

also Julie gee hello again Julie nice to see you on the live chat Jamal is here

hello Jamal Jamal says hello to everybody of course the reason why you

are here and why I'm here is to share and also to learn

English as well is it true that the tune at the beginning of your live English

was written by you is it true that the tune at the beginning was written by you

do you mean me no no I didn't write the tune at the beginning the piece of music

that you hear at the very beginning was not written by me I wish it was I wish I

could write music so well Nadia is here hello Nadia thanks for joining me today

Sunday it is the 20th of August we have one more Sunday to come so next Sunday

will be the last Sunday of August and it's been a very busy month for me

because of course last weekend I had my birthday last week and I'm

still getting messages from people wishing happy birthday even though my

birthday was last week so thank you very much for for all of the extra birthday

messages that I've received but it was my birthday over a week ago now so my

birthday has gone sadly Nicole is here hi mr. Duncan I'm happy to see you again

I'm happy to see you here well or else I would be doing this for nothing

Wang Nguyen is here thank you very much for joining me a burqa burka Akhtar's is

watching in Turkey hello Turkey I've been to your country twice karyam says I

need someone to make conversation with in English well Kareem you've come to

the right place because everyone here is crazy

about English hello from Taiwan oh hello Taiwan Ching you Chen is here watching

in Taiwan I have a friend who lives in Taiwan just in case he's watching hello

bear watching in Taiwan just in case he's

watching ape algol says mr. Duncan good morning good morning to you

Haider is watching in Iraq thank you for joining me today

Jamal says good introduction mr. Duncan oh thank you very much for that pal Omer

says hello mr. Duncan I am Zeinab from Algeria how are you I

love your lessons thank you very much for that and don't forget all of my

lessons are on my youtube channel and also you can find all of them underneath

this video so all of my playlists are available under this video right

underneath this video you can find all of my lesson playlists and there are

many of them quite a few so how do you find yourself in the position where you

lose things have you ever lost anything have you ever lost anything valuable

another question today is what do you do to relax yourself what do you do to

unwind if you unwind it means you relax you let

yourself go you take some time to relax so what do you do to relax

and as a way of helping us to relax we are now going to take a look at a lesson

that I made can you guess where I made it yes you're right I made this

particular lesson at the place that I was staying at during the week it's true

okay that's it I need a break I've been working all morning and I do

deserve a little rest so I'm going to sit back in my chair close my eyes and

think of a place think of somewhere I would love to be right now

the daily grind of life can sometimes get too much to bear it is very

important to make sure that you regularly take a break from your

everyday routine and the stresses and strains that daily life can throw at you

sometimes you just need to get away from it all and find a place in which to

relax of course this is not always possible so if you can't get there in

person why not use your imagination

think of a place you have been to before somewhere that gave you pleasure or

remember a happy time from your past that you treasure deeply

while relaxing we can say that you are taking a break

you are unwinding you are chilling out you are calming your thoughts you are

putting your feet up to unwind to chill to relax

to rest to put your feet up one of my favorite places to relax and unwinding

is here at Lake Verne we in Wales

this particular area was the subject of one of my earlier lessons and it is a

place that I'm very fond of besides sites there are various sounds that can

help you to relax a gentle stream flowing or the calming sound of waves

lapping on the shore or the sound of water streaming over a dam

many people consider sleeping to be the most effective way to unwind some people

like to have a short sleep during the day this is called a nap it is common

for people to take a short power nap during the afternoon do you like to take

a nap during the day I know I do

some people use mind exercises to relax themselves with this practice is called

meditation these days meditation is a very popular form of relaxation certain

types of music are also good for relaxing too we can describe these

sounds as ambient they help to create the mood and atmosphere around you

that was nice okay I've had my wrist too now time to get back to work

and there it was I hope that lesson made you feel all relaxed and comfortable it

certainly did me so how do you relaxed what do you do to relax yourself what do

you do in your spare time some people like to go for a walk so even though you

are exercising you are still relaxing so there are certain types of exercise that

can be relaxing for example going for a walk so I always like to go for a walk

if I'm feeling a little bit stressed or a little bit unhappy I like to go out

for a walk and I always find that walking does relax me so what do you do

to relax some people like to listen to music or

maybe read a book or even go to sleep of course sleeping I think sleeping is

the ultimate form of relaxation I think so so if you sleep there is nothing more

relaxing than going to sleep unless of course you have nightmares back to the

live chat we will be seeing a lot more of Lake Verne we later on in the lesson

today in the live stream this is live just after 2:30 just after half past two

in the afternoon here in the UK I don't know what time it is where you are

because I'm not there Manuel Manuel says are you I like the lessons that you made

about Samuel Johnson and also the origins of the English language

can you do more like those lessons please well of course there are lots of

lessons with various themes on my youtube channel but of course I will in

the future be making more lessons Ronaldo is here Reinaldo Ronaldo Santos

says good morning mr. Duncan and all of your friends I am talking to

you from salvador in brazil and i'm always excited to watch mr. Duncan's

videos thank you very much for that you've an you've an crystal is here

thank you for joining me today another question today is do you ever

lose things do you ever lose things maybe your belongings maybe something

that you've put down and then later you can't find if you lose something for a

short time we can say that you mislay

there it is there is the word mislay so the word mislay means to lose

something you lose something but quite often when you mislay something you

find it again later so mislay for example this morning i mislaid my phone

I put it down somewhere and then I couldn't remember where I'd put it so I

found it later I had mislaid my phone so Miss Leigh I

was asked to explain that word so there it is just for you Hader Hader says I

always lose some things in my room it's very easy to do though isn't it

especially when you're busy sometimes on a Sunday when I'm running around

preparing this I normally find that I mislay something like put something

down and then I can't remember where I put it

perhaps it's my age I don't know so mislay Thank You Jessi for asking me to

show the word yes there it is there it was and there it is again

there it is just in case you didn't see it miss Leigh you miss Leigh something

you put something down and then you lose it

hello from Kurdistan sazon is here hello to you as well hello teacher from Brazil

door eval door eval or door eval thank you very much

Pedro is here hi Pedro welcome back for a Sunday on this wonderful Sunday the

weather at the moment would you like to see the weather outside the weather

today is not looking great I must admit it's a little bit overcast it's a little

cloudy so there is the view outside so that is today's weather sadly today we

are not outside we are going to stay in the studio but don't worry because we

have lots of outdoor views to come later on including mr. Steve mr. Steve will be

here at 3 o'clock as usual oh yes mr. Steve will be here at 3 and

he has something special today he is going to talk all about idioms to do

with animals animal idioms so I've given him some homework III asked him to do

this last night I said mr. Steve would you mind making a list of animal idioms

so that is what he is doing right now he's very busy preparing so mr. Steve

will be here at 3 o'clock talking of mr. Steve whilst we were away on holiday mr.

Steve actually recorded some special flash words would you like to have a

look at one of mr. Steve's flash words that he recorded at Lake Vyrnwy would

you here it comes so now here is mr. Steve with today's

first flash word from Lake Vyrnwy and today's first flash word is respite the

word respite is an English noun that means a period of rest or recuperation

we often seek respite after experiencing something upsetting

or stressful after coming out of hospital he took some well-deserved rest

bite after going through something that has taken its toll on you you might need

some respite to recover you can offer respite to someone as a way of helping

them recover from whatever they had just gone through respite names both a long

or short period of relief or escape from something respite very nice Thank You

mr. Steve so there was mr. Steve at Lake Vyrnwy at the hotel and we will check

in with mr. Steve live at 3 o'clock but also we will take a look at some more of

mr. Steve's special flash words and also one flash phrase as well a little bit

later on talking of mr. Steve

mr. Steve mr. Steve you're not exactly you're not exactly playing the piano

there are you but this is how you practice you don't practice with the

keys you practice with the lid down I don't think that's true yes it's true

yes you see with the lid up well

it's a Sunday afternoon and we are as live as live can be I'm starting to

worry about this show because I think mr. Steve is starting to take over my

live stream I'm getting a bit worried I'm feeling very threatened to be honest

talking with mr. Steve we have him live yes live in the studio no expense has

been spared today and of course mr. Steve does do this for free just like me

so a little bit later at 3 o'clock in 20 minutes time mr. Steve will be here

right here in the studio live oh my goodness but now we have the mystery

idioms to take a look at so here come today's mystery idioms we have two and

all you have to do is guess what they are here they are so here is the first

mystery idiom you have to guess what it is and also tell me what it means as

well so just look at the picture and say what you see say what you see here is

the second the second mystery idiom by the way those hens are mine though those

are my my hens you can see there so today's mystery idiom so there is the

second one and for those who missed it there is the first one but the big

question is what what are the mystery idioms if you think you know please tell

me Hwang to the juin says please can you say my name well I just did

a Marwa is here hello Maura thanks for joining me today

manuel thank you very much for your messages today Tias Tia I hope I

pronounced your name right it is my first time watching you live

I didn't don't catch some of the words but I still try to understand well here

is some good advice because this live stream later will be stored on YouTube

so later you can watch this live stream again and later on there will be

subtitles there will be subtitles underneath later so you can watch this

live stream again and again as many times as you want and also there will be

subtitles here later so if you are watching this again on the archive on

the stored version of this live stream you can find for subtitles underneath so

thank you ts for that message Abdul Krim Abdul Karim says hi mr. Duncan hallo

Abdul thanks for joining me today Varga is here mr. Duncan there are some

crazy people on YouTube I think so who make 24-hour live streams what do you

think about it will you ever try a long live stream now the longest that I've

ever been on YouTube on the live stream or in a live stream is I think it's

about four and a half hours so the longest I've ever been on YouTube live

is four and a half hours I'm not sure about 24 hours

would you really watch me if I were to come on to the Internet

and start a live stream and I said this is mr. Duncan I'm going to stay on for

24 hours would you really watch that I'm not sure

I think you would be very bored to be honest I think so happy birthday mr.

Duncan I wish you all happiness Thank You Mara wah it was actually my birthday

last week last Saturday was my birthday over a week ago Estella says I have just

lost my umbrella I lost it last week yes me too I often lose my umbrella now I'm

going to tell you the things that I normally lose so here is my list of

things that I normally lose first of all gloves gloves I always lose my gloves

gloves the things you wear on your hands to keep them warm so I often lose gloves

normally I just lose one glove and so I'm left with one glove so I lose one

glove and I have one glove also umbrellas I have lost so many umbrellas

in my life so many I can't even count them that's how many umbrellas I've lost

so yes umbrellas we often leave our umbrellas in a public place maybe on the

train or on the bus so yes I have lost many umbrellas another thing that I've

lost in the past scarfs the thing you put around your

neck in the winter scarf so a scarf is something you wear around your neck and

I've lost scarfs the strangest thing I've ever lost is a shoe how do you lose

a shoe that is the strangest thing I've ever

lost a shoe how can you lose a shoe there on your feet it's impossible but I

managed to do it although I was walking I was out walking and it was in a very

muddy place so there was lots of mud and the ground was very soft and I put my

foot into the mud and when I lifted my foot out the shoe was still in the mud

so that's how I lost one of my shoes I lost it by accident it got stuck in

the murder so we have mystery idioms today just in case you missed them here

they are again I almost sang a song then here you are

the mystery idioms today can you solve them well can you there is the second

one so they are today's mystery idioms if you think you know what the answers

to those mystery idioms are just let me know that's all you have to do so yes I

have lost lots of things many things carve o hyung asks what is the

difference between loose and lose well first of all we have lose and loose so

these two words look very similar and also they they sound almost the same so

first of all this word sorry this word lose lose and this word loose loose

loose loose loose loose so this word Lou News means something vanishes you have

something and then suddenly you can't find it you lose it

something that vanishes something that disappears something you can't find you

have lost you lose it and then there is loose loose something that is loose if

something is loose it means it moves easily it is loose it is easy to move

something that is loose for example you can have a loose tooth so if one of your

teeth is moving around in your mouth we can say that you have a loose tooth

so there they are two words lose loose lose loose I hope that helps thank you

very much carve ohan for your question simona asks mr. Duncan did you write the

poem at the beginning of your lesson the answer to that is yes the poem that I

read at the beginning of every lesson I always read it well for that for the

past few weeks I have read this particular poem here it comes now this

is the poem that I wrote by myself some people complain that English is a pain

to learn remember and recite some people they fuss they curse moan in Custer they

have to stay up all night well people don't whine because things will be fine

I can promise you that in a flash for there's a man about town who will help

you calm down and ease all your worries in - you'll find him on the net

yes he's easy to get just a few clicks away that's all so people I shouted

again till I'm blue if you're learning English here's what you must do

tap this short address and click with your mouse be you at Annette bar or

alone in your house there's no course of action that could be finer youtube.com

slash Duncan in China and there it is my youtube channel address many people ask

why do you call your YouTube channel Duncan in China well the reason is

because many years ago I used to live in China and I created this YouTube channel

whilst living in China so that's the reason why that is the reason why my

YouTube channel has that name so now you know back to the live chat there are so

many people on today thank you very much everyone for joining me today

nicolai asks mr. Duncan do you understand the Welsh language no I don't

it's very difficult to understand and many of the sounds in the Welsh language

are very different so the Welsh language has some very unique sounds and many of

these particular sounds are made in the throat they are very good glottal they

are very far back in your mouth or even in your throat

so the Welsh language is a very unusual language also the other thing that if

you read Welsh if you look at Welsh words that are written down you will

find that they often use consonants they use many many consonants in there in

their words very few vowels so yes the Welsh

language is a very interesting language but I can't understand any I can't

understand any Welsh and of course don't forget the longest name of a place is

actually a Welsh town and no I'm not going to try

to pronounce it because it's very difficult Gabrielle is sending me a

birthday greeting belated you see belated that is a word that I mentioned

last week if something is belated it is late you are doing it late

it is belated Thank You Gabrielle apparently my birthday and Gabrielle's

birthday are both in the same month oh what a coincidence hello teacher

I am Robair from Kurdistan in Iraq I know that I do have a lot of people now

watching in Iraq thank you very much for joining me today

Italy is here hello Italy thanks for joining me today

do you like my Renaissance hair oh I see yes on your icon on your little profile

icon your haircut is very interesting yes it it looks like something from the

Renaissance I think you're right Thank You Manuel for that

Aurora robber says I like to listen to music when I relax so what do you do to

relax how do you relax yourself what do you do to unwind and I think it's very

important I can't stress this enough I think it's very important that you all

have some time to relax this is a very common problem for people who are

learning maybe a new language or a new skill it is very easy to overdo it to do

it too much so you must remember to take breaks you must remember to relax when

you are learning something new and that of course includes English as well shall

we have a look at another one of mr. Steeves flash words

here is another one of mr. Steve's flash words and don't forget in five minutes

we have mr. Steve in the studio live and now here is mr. Steve with today's

second flash word from Lake Vyrnwy yesterday's second flash word is

improvised the word improvised is an English verb that means to perform

something with little or no preparation to improvise means to make something up

as you go along in an off-the-cuff manner without warning I was asked to

perform a song so I just got up there and improvised to do something with the

limited resources or without the necessary tools is to improvise I didn't

have a hammer so I just improvised with a lump of wood the word improvisation is

the noun that names the action of improvising to create something at the

same time as performing it is to improvise it is spontaneous and

unrehearsed improvised

Oh mr. Steve you did that so well and there is the place that we will be

seeing more of later we will see more of that place later on because there is a

lesson that I made about I think I made it about three or four years ago now

maybe even longer all about the place in which I stayed last week Lake Verne we

in Wales back to the live chat very soon we have mr. Steve live in the studio so

not on video he will be live here and today we are going to take a look at

some animal idioms we are almost an hour into today's full English stream and can

you believe it I can't believe today our English stream is already one hour old

doesn't time go quickly it really does back to the live chat

Bobby is this Bobby is this or Bobby Isis says it is I like to relax whilst

listening to good music I think so I think one of the best ways to relax is

to to lie down and listen to some of your favorite music may be something

very romantic or something very soft and gentle and then you can go to sleep

whilst listening to your favorite song so yes that's a very good suggestion

Marwa says I like to go to the beach and walk to relax and also also I like to

eat chocolate

me too I really do like eating chocolate it is a good way to relax but I think

maybe after eating chocolate you should go for a walk you should

hello mr. Duncan I love you thank you very much lots of lovely messages coming

through today we have a lot of people watching if I don't read your message

out I do apologize if I miss your message please don't get angry because I

do sometimes get people saying ear mr. Duncan why did you ignore my message I

don't ignore messages but sometimes the live chat is moving very quickly and

because of that I can't read everyone's messages kin when Yi is watching in

Myanmar hello to kin win ye I once got into trouble for pronouncing Myanmar as

Mayan ma I got a lot of people saying mr. Duncan you've got it wrong it's not

my and ma it's Myanmar so hello to kin win ye who is watching in Myanmar so

it's three o'clock and we all know what that means

well this is all very exciting there is nothing like presenting a live show a

lot of people say it's very stressful personally I think it's great I get very

excited just before I start my live stream I always feel very excited I have

butterflies butterflies in my stomach so it's live English for a Sunday

afternoon and now joining me live in the studio we saw him earlier on videotape

but now he is live in the studio yes he's back by popular demand it's mr.

Steve haha hello hello I'm back baby now that's what you call an introduction yes

well thank you very much for inviting me once again mr. Duncan to appear on your

live English show I'm very happy to do so this is turning into a quite a

regular appearance I hope I hope people like me appearing in your in your show I

mean you haven't had any complaints yet have you not yet know how good most of

the comments about mr. Steve most of the comments about you have been very very

favorable but good but I'm pleased to hear it huh I'll try not to not to say

things that I shouldn't do and you just keep today at the script as you have

told me to do no only joking we're live and we're we're we're saying whatever we

like and whatever we want to say you know we're not going to offend of course

I wish this was scripted I wish we had a script we have no script this is not

free rehearsed now last week we were out in the garden weren't we

yes yes we were working hard with with our tools in the garden and I was

showing everybody the various tools and the names of the tools that we use

commonly in the garden and of course afterwards I was out there using them as

I have been yesterday as well not this morning though because it's a the

weather's not so good today so I've been inside today

yes and of course YouTube did something last week didn't they they sabotage they

sabotage our livestream yes yes because when when we came back or when you came

back into the studio there were lots of messages from people saying that they

couldn't they did you only saw about half of what we did in the garden which

was a bit disappointing what was panicking

yes thankin where are you I thought you'd gone but you hadn't we hadn't we

were still there so hopefully you were able to watch our little piece in the

garden afterwards because it was all recorded - it's all there still to see

yes fortunately I don't know how it happened but YouTube cut the livestream

off last week but it still managed to record it so that's the reason why I

know it was YouTube's fault it wasn't my fault some people thought it was me

pressing the wrong buttons but it wasn't my fault it was YouTube and they

cut us off and I don't know why maybe maybe they are trying to tell us

something we have to wrap them over the knuckles don't worry I will be so I set

you some homework didn't I yes you did so what we gonna look at today well you

asked me to have a look at some some common phrases idioms a proverbs as you

will phrases that contain references to animals and I had an idle look you know

a couple of minutes for we came on no and that's preparation for you and there

are literally hundreds of these have you have you asked your viewers to to come

up with some suggestions or phrases containing animal animals yet or are we

going to do that during this I haven't yet huh but we have asked some of our

questions I'm going to ask you the questions I've been asking today first

of all do you ever lose things mr. Steve yes I do yes I'm always losing things I

don't lose I don't lose things like keys I've got a very strict way of

I always put keys in the same place certain things money I don't lose things

like that but I'll often do that the common thing of having too much on your

mind and you come downstairs for something and you've forgotten what

you've come downstairs for so I tell out to lose things but I tend to forget

where I've what I'm doing at any moment of time cause my mind is is is is

focusing on too many things at once I think I tend to think I'll lose things

if I are then to put things away like in the shed or in in the the garage and I

think oh yes I'll remember where that is but sort of six or nine months later you

think you're being clever by putting it in a certain place and then you can't

remember where you put it often it's best to just stick them in any way

really because you often can't find it later on anyway so mr. C do you wrap it

all up it's mr. Steve often rabbiting on miss lays things so miss lay there is a

word that we were looking at earlier it's a very interesting word mislay so

if you miss lay something you put something down and then later you can't

remember where you put it so this morning I couldn't find my mobile phone

I was looking everywhere for it and I couldn't find it so we could say that I

i mislaid the phone I lost it for a short time and then I found it again so

you can lose things you can miss lay things and of course you can lose things

permanently have you ever lost anything valuable mr. Steve um I'm trying to

think now I lost anything valuable I can't think of an example off the top of

my head about anything I've lost maybe maybe you can tell me something I've

lost have you ever if you're a didn't you

have a somebody try to steal your car once yes they did yes oh yes several

times that's happened lose you didn't lose I lost my mother's engagement ring

okay play shouldn't I shouldn't reveal that in case she's watching no please

please tell me now now this is it this crowd we won't go

into that as I want to reveal that this is an exclusive everyone mr. Steve is

now going to tell us it's confession time with mr. Steve mr. Steve is going

to confess to the world what he did with his mother's engagement ring Oh what

happened well I don't know I was very young at the time going through drawers

in my mother's bedroom or something like

through your mother's draw yes the drawers that contain things you know not

not underwear that which is of course drawers is also an expression for

underwear but I wasn't going through my mother's underwear he would go through a

mother's hot water now now I was going through the drawers the cupboards in in

in the bedroom and I think I found some rings and tried them on took them

outside and lost one of them in the garden I found it again later on but I

don't think she ever realized I had lost it

oh I see so about a week it was only missing for a short time only missing

for a short time I dropped it somewhere and I couldn't find in the garden and it

took me a while to dig in to find it again and put it back back before

anybody knew about it but yes that could have been nice obviously that's all

revealed now is out of 40 years later or 50 years later just in case mr. Steve's

mother is watching now hello there I think she is but my sister could well be

watching and she might tell my mother Sam no no I don't have to call my sister

later so the secret is now out that mr. Steve mr. Steve when he was a child he

lost he mislaid his mother's engagement ring for a short time but then it was

found again thankfully yes what put it this way my mother's never said where's

my engagement ring you know maybe she'll go never look back

I think actually I think this could be a new feature on the live stream every

week we have to confess to something maybe our viewers also you can confess

to something out there confess and also we can confess to something I'm

going okay because you've been very honest I'm going to confess to something

right now I'm going to tell you something that I've never told anyone

ever not even me this is something that I've never mentioned ever I did

something once which is very embarrassing just to know one time if

you want to know what it is go on tellers whence I was coming back

from London I was on the train it was very late at night and I was very hungry

and the train was almost deserted there was there was no one on the train the

train was empty although earlier the train had been very busy so hmm on the

train near to where I was sitting I noticed that there was a packet of

crisps maggot of potato chips as they say in America so in America they call

them potato chips and here we call them crisps now I saw that the packet was

half-eaten so there were some crisps still in the packet can you guess what I

did I actually ate someone else's discarded food there you go now that is

a that's a pretty big confession that's oh that's a really big confession to

make I think so so that's something I did I'm not proud of it but I was very

hungry so I actually ate someone else's food baby that it being left on the on

the train because I was so hungry perhaps somebody else would is this

common that maybe perhaps other people had done this anybody else out there who

has eat and discarded food maybe even gone in the bin and eaten a piece of

half-eaten pizza that someone has left behind well well the only reason why I

ate the crisps was because it was in a packet so I assume that the crisps must

must still be clean so that's the reason why I ate them from the packet so if it

was food that was just sitting on the table like a piece of pizza

or a bit of I don't know a bit of hot dog I wouldn't have done that I wouldn't

have eaten that but because the crisps were in the packet I thought hmm well

I'm feeling hungry maybe I can just take those crisps out and they were still

fresh so there you go I've eaten food off other people's

plates people often give me their their food because I've got quite a healthy

appetite for food and often people can't finish their food and they give it to me

and I finish it off for them you're there all the time my mother does that a

lot actually you are literally a human dustbin she

doesn't say that right oh right behind you winding you up I'm just conscious

that I might be saying things I may regret later yes I'm sure you will be

I'm sure you are and I sure I'm sure you have so what are

we looking at today then mr. Steve ah we are looking at words or phrases idioms

expressions that contain references to animals so would you like to give us

some examples now there are literally hundreds of these for example a fish out

of water a fish out of water refers to a situation where somebody is

uncomfortable unprepared or unsuitable for for example me standing here live in

front of the camera you could say I was like a fish out of water

maybe or you might say might not say that I like a fish out of water you

might sound quite comfortable but if for example you were suddenly asked to to do

some public speaking and you've never done it before and it was very

uncomfortable you could and you were very bad at it and it was a bit

embarrassing people might say that you look like a fish out of water or you

might even say yourself that you felt like a fish out of water

obviously it's referring to the fact that a fish when is not in the water is

uncomfortable so you know that's one phrase it's it's a bit like going to a

place maybe if you travel abroad just yes yes definitely yes you could travel

abroad to a foreign country where the cultures are different everything's

different and you could feel like a fish out of

water definitely that's a good I like that one that's a great one okay another

one please another one a leopard can't change its spots

now that refers to the fact that then it's an ocean really that people can't

really change their nature it's an ocean so you might not necessarily ascribe to

that idea but for example if someone's naughty if they're a robot for example

there could be a thief or a murderer or something like that or somebody that

that commits adultery is cheating on their partner you might say that this is

something they may always tend to do because the behavior is something that

they can't necessarily change they might want to change it but it's part of their

nature so you would say that a leopard can't change its spots so what a thief

will always be a thief or a murderer always be a murderer you might that's

just a couple of examples but often a friend will say that to you won't they

if if your partners you found out your partner's cheating on you and you're

upset and they've done it once I did it twice but you're sticking by them but

you but in the hope that they will reform touching a few nerves here I

can't say your friend might say well I would leave them if I were you because a

leopard can't change its spots so if a person has a certain habit or a certain

way of behaving sometimes it's very hard to change the yes they might want to but

they might not be able to you me might not believe that you might think people

can change some people can change of course they can but maybe they can't

maybe that leopard can't change his spots okay so that's two so far we're on

to wolves now I'm going sheep's clothing' about I'm explaining these

tubes okay let's just take it down a step got 45 minutes left right a wolf in

sheep's clothing what do you think that means well it's a person who hides

malicious intent under the guy is of kindness yeah so that's somebody

who appears to be nice on the outside but in fact is is is hiding something

bad that they want to do to underneath a wolf in sheep's clothing what are you

saying this well they often say that that salespeople often refer to being

wolves in sheep's clothing and then I don't want to disparage any particular

branch of it but quite often you either that people might be trying to sell you

something that's that's inappropriate for you or overpriced what animal does

you marry there disparage yes that mean disparage that means - well you're the

new English teacher you tell them they're just it means to say something

bad about somebody that isn't necessarily true yes if you sort of

criticize or if you say bad things or you run them down you say bad things

about someone we can say that you disparage them you criticize them you

you bring them down yes yeah very good top dog top dog total dog there's

another one I've seen on my list here a person who dominates or is victorious

the winner really the top dog so you might have a group of people at work

salespeople for example and the one of them always comes out on top it always

has the highest sales you could say they're the top dog whatever we restore

to there should be a series on television I think in prison the person

who is the who is the the dominant person in prison is referred to as the

top dog I wouldn't know about Lowe Eve though I wouldn't think in prison not

yet anyway the opposite of that of course is the underdog the person that

never really wins always comes second or third they might keep trying but they're

they're always they're always coming further down the rankings so they're the

underdog that's quite interesting so you have top dog and yes a leader and then

you have underdog and that's the person it's always at the bottom or always

being being put upon tries hard but never quite makes it the end

people tend to particularly in the in in England people tend to think

affectionately of underdogs that they're not they're not treated as being bad or

or poor they're quite often seen as heroes they are actors they're trying

hard they're trying their best but they never quite make it and in British

English coach so that's always looked upon quite favorably but not and not so

much I don't think in America where as the top dog is where it's all about

there I want to get myself into trouble but there I don't want to be in the

doghouse there's another expression I think isn't that one top bitch I don't

bet they could well be yes sure in America there's as a phrase it's top

bitch I don't know maybe we've got anyone in America watching now they

could they could tell us more others are in the doghouse that's the other word

like that was brush they were using in the doghouse that refers to somebody

who's being so shamed through bad behavior and if your dog is behaving

badly you tell it to go in its kennel or the doghouse and if you've behaved badly

shamefully then you could say that you have been put in the doghouse if you're

badly performing at work or you say something horrible to somebody at work

you would be your colleagues could put you in the doghouse

well that's just an expression of course we're all expressions you are sort of

you you are in trouble you are being punished maybe you came home late the

night before yes your wife or husband you came home late drunk is angry and

they refused to talk to you they will ignore you the next day because you've

been very very naughty he's done something wrong so you will be in the

doghouse like that one day do you have any more

I've got one here let the cat out of the bag let the cat out of the bag that's to

carelessly reveal a secret and actually I look this one up because I thought

referred to a cat coming out of a bag and and which you think would be very

upset and would be scratching you and a lot of that sort of thing but it doesn't

refer to that parent it refers to and it's related to the phrase pig in the

poke OS ooh yeah so if you let the cat out of the bag it refers to it well as a

sense of carelessly revealed a secret about something but it refers to the

fact that in ancient days if you were going to market you wanted to sell a pig

you would carry it in a bag but then you would try it as the bit first for

example you didn't have something as valuable as a pig in that bag you had a

cat which was worth less but you soldier to that person but they

looked inside the bag before they bought that particular item and they discovered

instead of a pig inside there there was a cat and as you let the cat out of the

bag you've revealed you even found out about that secret well so that's what it

refers to that is one heck of an explanation thank you very much for

explaining that because even I didn't know that well yes and an example of

that would be for example if you were you took a sick day from work but you

won't really sink and then somebody one of your colleagues saw you in town at a

cafe because they were on holiday and then you could say all that's let the

cat out of the bag I've been discovered so to reveal a secret or something that

you would see talk about or say yes they might then go to work and tell your boss

that you weren't really off sick at all so that's let the cat out of the bag Wow

yes exactly Andrew andrew has left a message asking

how long have we known each other Oh blimey yes a long time oh my goodness

a long time do you want to do you want to answer this question or shall I your

answer the question thank you Thank You mr. Steve 20-hour days we have known

each other if I told you that we've known each other since the 1980s

yes would you believe me would you would they I don't know I'm not sure yet but

yes we've known each other for many years from the from the late 1980s we've

known each other yes so that I roundabout about 28 years

I think it's 28 days a years and eight nine days yes so that's a very long time

yes thank you Andrew for your question and thanks also to for making me feel

very old are you going to say the exact day and what was special about the day

no we will keep that for another lesson we'll keep that for another time we

don't want to we don't want to let too many cats out of the bag or is it the

elephant in the room maybe what does that mean the elephant in the room that

means a big thing that everybody knows about but feels uncomfortable to discuss

it might be uncomfortable to reveal that fact for example somebody at work always

turns up drunk or late but it might be an appropriate for in a group of people

to to talk about everybody knows that this person in this room in this meeting

is is drunk but how do you bring that up it's difficult so it's the elephant in

the room it's the thing that everybody knows about but nobody's really talking

about because it's uncomfortable to talk about it I think so that's a great

expression in fact that was one of my mystery idioms about three weeks ago

but it so I think that's a great link into today's mystery idioms here they

are let's have a look at the mystery idiom right so here they are mystery

idiom number one and here is mystery idiom number two and yes they are my

hens the hens you can see are mine so they are today's mystery idioms shall we

have a look at mr. Steve playing the piano again did you like

that earlier we I was I was showing a clip earlier of mr. Steve and you were

you were pretending pretending to play the piano I wa

mr. Steve mr. Steve you're not exactly you're not exactly playing the piano

there are you this is how you practice you don't practice with the keys you

practice with the lid down I don't think that's true

yes it's true you see within it up well

mm we are live it's mr. Duncan and of course mr. Steve is still here with us

hello yes you could say it's interesting you could say that when it comes to

playing the piano I feel a bit like a fish out of water so what were you doing

there you were pretending to play the piano you had the lid down I was

pretending to play yes and I thought that I'd get away with it but you had

the camera there and reveal that I was faking mm-hmm

but I do know for a fact that you you you used to learn you used to practise

the piano many years ago I can't play a little I can't play a little but not

very much so if I practice more I'm sure I will be able to play very well but I

can't play very well well you know what they say you know what they say practice

makes perfect it does but you have to practice for many years to play the

piano well anyway mr. Steve thank you very much for your company you have been

here for 26 minutes oh I think that's the longest ever I think so about eight

minutes of that was you're explaining cat out of the bag

cat out of the bag yes I'm quite happy too I did look these things up before we

came on but she just said well I did because I actually was wrong in in my

interpretation of that phrase so I'm glad I looked it up before before coming

on and talking about it live to literally millions of people you should

always check your sources definitely mine is tomato mine was Google oh very

interesting faces hope it was right anyway mr. Steve we will see you next

week okay will will you oh I'm being invited back again yes you are coming

back by popular demand because I have already lots of people here saying hello

to mr. Steve so Mary M and armored and Helena Oh Helena apparently says I like

chocolate too nor we like chocolate we love chocolate mister

and and me Oh chocolate I had also Lena says hello to mr. Steve you have lots of

hands hello hello to everyone that said hello to me thank you very much ed in al

Nahas says when I was a child my family lost me for a full day so yes sometimes

children can go missing quite often in the supermarket so when the parents are

walking around the supermarket with their child sometimes the child might

might wander away might win her off so yes that can happen so opening I would

think right frightening fortunately he was found so that's good news well II

says I want to learn English please help well you have come to the

right place a well well a leandro you have come to the right place because

only English is what we do we will see you next week mr. Steve okay I'm off I

don't want we gonna do now I'm just lost bereft not having to appear live with

you but bereft or so bereft bereft what does that mean bereft I'm upset upset

you are beside yourself yeah with grief yes you are bereft but I've gone next

week to look forward to that's it you got next Sunday right next Sunday to

look forward to at long as you don't get any complaints and decide not to have me

on no there are no complaints maybe i'll fakely yeah play another musical

instrument maybe our fakely perform on the violin I'm not that I've got it

violate that's we can find other instrument for me to fakely perform on

we have a tambourine here ah right well I could probably do that that doesn't

take much playing that's very easy I don't think you have to mime a

tambourine to be honest I think a tambourine is very easy to play

we are sorry suik good luck with the rest of the lesson thank you very much

livelesson and i shall see you all next week

parting is such sweet sorrow by mr. Duncan bye everyone see you next week

bye bye bye bye there he is gone that was mr. Steve live

on my livestream for almost half an hour and apparently lots of people now enjoy

watching mr. Steve Miriam says when I was young I lost my ring too

ah you also lost a ring just like mr. Steve did when he was little

would you like to see a lesson all about the place I was in this week I was at a

place called Lake Verne we Lake Vyrnwy which is in Wales now this is not the

whole lesson this is not the complete lesson this is just an excerpt from the

full lesson you can find the link to the lesson underneath this video so

underneath this video is the link to the full version of this lesson

hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in England how are you today

are you ok I hope so are you happy I hope so

Here I am on my short summer break taking a well-deserved rest at Lake

Vyrnwy in Wales and you are very welcome to join me

Lake Vyrnwy lies to the south of the Snowdonia mountains in an area known as

Montgomery sure just like many parts of Wales it consists of wide-open

countryside with lush green hills and many cattle farms the lake itself makes

up a large part of the Nature Reserve and Country Estate the Nature Reserve is

a haven for tourists hikers cyclists and bird watchers who come to this beauty

spot each summer to get away from life in the busy towns and cities for a while

the village is very small and only consists of a few houses a cafe some

gift shops and an Information Center

the lake itself is artificial it is in fact a reservoir which was constructed

towards the end of the 19th century construction of the large dam began in

1881 and it took seven years to complete

the feat of constructing this enormous structure took many months of designing

keeping the millions of gallons of water captured

would need a very tall and wide building indeed it would also have to be strong

there are two very noticeable features of the reservoir the first being the

tall tower which from afar looks a little like something from a fairy tale

the purpose of this tower is to strain the water before it makes its way along

the aqueduct an aqueduct is a pipe or channel used for transferring water over

long distances the aqueduct from Lake Fern we is mostly

hidden underground the straining tower is not open to the public

the other very obvious feature at Lake fern way is of course the dam this is

what keeps all the water in place the dam is 44 meters high from the bottom of

the valley and is 39 meters thick at the base water is constantly being released

from the dam so as to prevent the nearby river Vyrnwy from drying out between

five and ten million gallons of water is released through this valve every day

when the water level of the reservoir becomes too high this whole side of the

dam is transformed into a huge foaming waterfall as the excess water is

steadily released so as to prevent the surrounding land from becoming

waterlogged it is common for people to confuse the word dam with dike they are

actually not the same thing a dam is used to keep water in it

captures the water while a dike is used to keep water out it is often used as a

defense against the sea when the tide is unusually high

Wales is well known for its stunning scenery its expansive green valleys and

the Rolling Hills play host to countless wild animals but no creature is more

commonly seen here in Wales than the sheep

the distinctive white dots created by the many flocks are a common sight here

especially during springtime when the Lambs are born this period is called the

lambing season

and there it is the place I stayed at last week Lake Vyrnwy in Wales Lake

Vyrnwy if you want to see the full version of that particular lesson the

whole lesson is available on my youtube channel I have just placed it in the

live chat as well so the link to the full version of my Lake

Vernie lesson my lesson is in the live chat and also it is underneath this

video just in case you are watching later on we have the mystery idioms

today here they are in all their glory

so there is the first mystery idiom but what is it what is it what could it be

and there is the second one they are both well-known expressions in English

and of course that particular idiom relates to an animal and earlier on we

had mr. Steve mr. Steve was here earlier talking all about idioms to do with

animals do you know any animal idioms do you know any idioms connected to animals

one of my favorite is straight from the horse's mouth something that comes

directly or something that comes from the source of the news so a reliable

source or the person who is directly involved they will tell another person

about what happened it came straight from the horse's mouth

that is another expression that involves animals so back to the live chat I

haven't mentioned anyone for a long time because we've had mr. Steve here today

hada is here thank you very much for this live lesson you are welcome Mika

odhh is here hi mica thanks for joining me today nice to see

you here I want to visit whales someday well who knows who knows you might have

the chance to visit a beautiful place a wonderful place and also a place that I

have a lot of fond memories for if you have fond memories of a place then you

might you might often find yourself relaxing whilst thinking of those things

so how do you relax what do you do to relax when you are dreaming about

something from the past maybe a nice moment from your life maybe you will

dream about that wonderful summer holiday you had I like to think about

the things that I've done in my life that have given me pleasure I like to

daydream sometimes I think daydreaming is a very good way of relaxing you can

think about the things you would like to do you can have a few fantasies playing

in your head so that also is a very good way to relax I believe we have a flash

phrase from mr. Steve mr. Steve has a flash phrase coming right now so here is

mr. Steve with today's flash phrase from Lake Vyrnwy

today's Flash word is out of the woods the sentence out of the woods is an

English phrase that means to be safe and no longer in danger you can relax now we

are out of the woods the phrase out of the woods is used as

an idiom to show that an unpleasant situation or possible danger has passed

of course it is possible to say that you are not out of the woods yet which means

that things are still bad for example his condition is improving but he's not

out of the woods yet the phrase out of the woods refers to

finding your way out of a large forest you are no longer lost or in danger you

are out of the woods

mhmmm so there it was another well that was actually a flash phrase from mr.

Steve recorded in the place I was staying in and also mr. Steve was

hanging around although shall we have a look at the

photographs because there is one particular photograph that caught my eye

not that one yes that one there is mr. Steve what is he doing there it looks as

if he's it looks as if he's enjoying a pint of beer so now and again mr. Steve

just like having a drink of beer but not always last week did you see mr. Steve

last week he was so excited to be on the live stream last week he was in the

garden just in case you've missed last week's live stream it is available right

now to watch on my youtube channel you can watch it Thank You Claudio for

making a guess at one of today's mystery idioms thank you very much for that

lemon tree has also made some guesses for

today's mystery idioms here they are again I will give you the answers to

these mystery idioms before the end of today's stream so don't worry I will not

leave you without giving you the answers so there is a second one and there is

the first one to be honest I think these are a little easy I've made them

slightly easy this week I don't know why because I've been on holiday I'm feeling

very generous you see you can ask me for anything now anything because I'm

feeling I'm feeling so relaxed after my lovely short break Eugene is here Eugene

has an expression connected to animals raining cats and dogs is an idiom that's

connected to animals yes raining cats and dogs it is raining very heavily the

rain is coming down very fast we can say that it is raining cats and dogs

Claudio Thank You Claudio for your guests at today's mystery idioms andrew

is here very active today in the live chat andrew is Jamelia is here

oh hello Jamelia I didn't see you there I'm sorry I didn't see you I'm not

ignoring you don't worry thank you very much for joining me I love to sit around

and do nothing every time I want to relax so that is what Jamelia does I

must admit sometimes I like to just sit in the

chair relax do nothing sometimes I like to stare out of the window and watch the

animals in the garden talking of animals during my holiday I saw something very

interesting very special would you like to see it now

here is something very unusual now the room I was staying in at Lake Vyrnwy

had a very interesting view but also living just above the window there were

Housemartins can you see them there can you see all

of the Housemartins flying around so just above the window of the room that I

was staying in lots of Housemartins were living right above my head and you can

see them they're all flying around there were loads of them there must have been

around about a hundred of them all flying around and of course Housemartins

quite often live in large nests made of mud and they normally build these under

the eaves of roofs so you will often see Housemartins build their nests on the

side of houses as their name suggests so there is something I saw during my stay

at Lake Vyrnwy lots of Housemartins were flying around

we are coming towards the end of today's livestream ten minutes to go it's mr.

Duncan live as live can be back to the live chat

oh okay lots of people wanting to get involved amra wardi has also made

guesses to today's mystery idioms thanks a lot for that

Miriam Miriam is here could I ask how many times do you go

live each week I am here every Sunday there you go

can you see now on the screen I am here every Sunday from 2:00 p.m. UK time so

you can catch me on youtube live Sunday 2:00 p.m. UK time and of course I will

be here next week I will be back with you once again tomorrow something is

happening to a famous landmark in London do you know what it is

something is happening tomorrow tomorrow big bed in London the famous bell that

rings across London is to fall silent so tomorrow

Big Ben the famous bell that rings across London will fall silent tomorrow

because the clock tower is about to undergo lots of essential maintenance

and renovation so from tomorrow Big Ben will fall silent and it will fall silent

for four years apparently for years so whilst the work takes place the bell

above the clock tower will not ring however the Bell will still ring out

during formal okay such as New Year's Eve so New Year's Eve

we will still have the famous boom-boom the famous chimes of Big Ben but for

most of the time it will be silent and for those who are wondering the clock

tower the building itself is called the Elizabeth clock tower and Big Ben is the

name of the Bell so the Bell inside the clock tower is

called Big Ben a lot of people think that the clock tower is called Big Ben

but it isn't it's actually the name of the Bell inside the clock so the thing

that chimes the thing that rings is Big Ben it is the actual Bell and the tower

the clock tower is called the Elizabeth clock tower it used to be

called the Stephenson clock tower but then they changed the name as a way of

celebrating Queen Elizabeth's I think it was her Golden Jubilee in 2012 if I'm

not mistaken I've probably got that wrong the

Elizabeth clock tower and the Bell is called Big Ben and Big Ben will fall

silent tomorrow so actually from tomorrow

Big Ben will not be chiming it will not be ringing except of course for

important occasions so the Bell will still ring out during formal occasions

such as New Year's Eve so there it is something to talk about something to

the meaning to be in the same situation to share the same dilemmas and

difficulties as each other we are all in the same boat so to be in the same boat

to be in the same situation and the second mystery idiom here it comes

but what is the answer a lot of people got this right well done thank you very

much and the answer is take the bull by the horns take the bull by the horns the

meaning to take control of something that is hard to do or face to deal

decisively with a tough or dangerous situation is to take the bull by the

horns if you take the bull by the horns it means you take control of a situation

to deal decisively ah I love that word decisively if you deal with something

decisively you do it with a lot of intention you do it with a lot of

The Seriously Shady Side Of Charlize Theron - Duration: 5:25.

Although she's one of the most respected and decorated actresses in Hollywood, Charlize

Theron's career hasn't been without its hiccups.

She's feuded with costars, snubbed other celebrities, and generated more than her fair share of

tabloid headlines.

Here's a look at the seriously shady side of Charlize Theron.

Ghost stories

For awhile, Theron and Sean Penn were one of the weirdest power couples in Hollywood.

Then, according to Us Weekly, Theron reportedly ghosted Penn at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival,

a claim that spawned a whole national conversation about the concept of ghosting itself.

When she finally broke her silence on the breakup, Theron told WSJ Magazine those reports

were hooey.

"When you leave a relationship there has to be some f**king crazy story or some crazy

drama.

And the f**king ghosting thing, like literally, I still don't even know what it is…

We were in a relationship and then it didn't work anymore.

And we both decided to separate.

That's it."

Their awkward reunion at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival to promote a film they'd worked together

on the year before just got tongues wagging even more — but only the two of them know

what really happened.

Zach Galifianakis probably could have told Penn what a heartbreaker she is.

"The image of me and you…

like like… me naked in a pool, with like a fat garden gnome like.. hahaha."

She feuded with Tom Hardy

Theron has been more than open about the feud that erupted with co-star Tom Hardy on the

set of the 2015 Oscar-winning thriller Mad Max: Fury Road, telling Esquire magazine in

April 2015 that they "f**kin' went at it" on set and "drove each other crazy."

Director George Miller told WSJ Magazine that it was just a natural byproduct of their intense

on-screen relationship.

"I'm not saying that they were seething right through, but the trajectory of the characters

can't help but seep into the work.

When they first meet each other, they're trying to kill each other.

As the two characters come together out of necessity and rather reluctantly, they have

to find a degree of trust.

And to some extent that was the trajectory of [Charlize and Tom's] relationship as well."

Her rivalry with Angelina Jolie runs deep

Theron's Hollywood feuds allegedly extend to Angelina Jolie as well, with the tension

supposedly stemming from roles that the actresses have fought over, including the remakes of

Murder on the Orient Express and Bride of Frankenstein.

A source told Radar, "The hate fest between these two started a long time ago and just

won't stop.

It's as though directors are getting a buzz out of playing them against each other, by

dangling a script to both of them then leaving them to b**ch and slug it out."

She was sued for $20 million

In February 2007, Theron was slapped with a shocking $20 million lawsuit for breach

of contract after she allegedly wore a watch by Christian Dior to an event while she was

contractually obligated to exclusively wear watches designed by Swiss watchmaker Raymond

Weil.

They were further enraged when a billboard at a Swiss trade show featured Theron wearing

a watch by rival Montblanc.

According to the New York Daily News, Weil claimed the incidents "demonstrate a total

disregard by [Theron] for any of her obligations under the agreement."

After settling the suit, Theron became a spokesperson for Dior watches.

Ouch!

She squabbled with Tobey Maguire

Although it doesn't sound as intense as her time on Mad Max: Fury Road, Theron has admitted

that she also went at it with co-star Tobey Maguire on the set of the 1999 movie The Cider

House Rules.

The Oscar-winning actress told V Magazine, "Tobey and I had a bit of a rough time, yeah.

I mean, we're good now.

It was a difficult movie.

Whether it's the weather, or the writing isn't there, or you don't get along with your castmate,

you have to be able to go to something else that's just as powerful.

Does it make it as enjoyable?

Probably not.

I mean, there were just a couple of days that Tobey and I had a rough time.

The rest of the movie, we actually had a really good time."

While she went on to declare that she loves Maguire, she also saved room for a not-so-subtle

dig.

"I'm kind of glad we had that experience on that movie.

It teaches you different things.

It taught me that I could fall in love with somebody in my head while looking at someone

else."

Spin control

Memo to those who take SoulCycle spin classes with Theron: you probably shouldn't approach

her and say hello.

Actress and reality TV star Tia Mowry allegedly learned this the hard way, telling InTouch

"She wasn't very nice to me.

I said, 'Hi,' and she actually rolled her eyes and said, 'Oh my God.'

"I wasn't over-the-top.

I know how to approach another celebrity.

Charlize was just mean.

I'm just being honest."

Mowry later backtracked on her comments.

"I don't know Charlize.

Um.. It was all blown out of proportion.

I respect her I think she is amazing, she's wonderful."

However, a source told InTouch that after switching gyms, Theron was was continuing

her diva antics at the new location too.

"She always arrives late to class with a scowl on her face and has the nerve to ask people

who are already settled on their bikes to switch.

She always causes a scene.

People know to steer clear of her!"

"No...no, I don't like these people"

"I have to leave."

Hey, they don't call her Furiosa for nothing.

"(scream)"

Visiting the historical region of Bukovina in both Romania & Ukraine | Travel Vlog: Bucovina - Duration: 8:41.

[Romanian] - Romanian girls are really pretty! - Sincerely the prettiest!

[English] - So going out and partying is a lot of fun but I'm suffering a

little bit this morning in the heat. It's my final morning in Bucharest. I'm going to go

to Suceava which is in the north of Romania. And it is hot here. It is like 34 degrees.

I'm now on the train to Suceava.

[Romanian] - It's so rare that an Irish guy speaks Romanian.

- I'm really happy. - Thanks

[English] So I'm at the bus station in Suceava. I'm going to leave now and go to Chernivtsi

in Ukraine and a little bit about the region. So this historically is Bucovina. In

Romanian it's called 'Bucovina Sud. That means Southern Bucovina and I'm going to 'Bucovina

Nord' which is in Ukraine or in Ukrainian it's going to be Chernivtsi

oblast [region] and they used to be one historic region together.

[Romanian] - To Chernivtsi? - To Chernivtsi, yes.

- It's a beautiful city. Taken by the Russians ... you understand?

- Yes, I understand.

And today can one speak Romanian in Chernivtsi or not?

- Yes, they speak Romanian. In Chernivtsi, those who speak Romanias are really a lot.

[English] -Chernivtsi oblast used to be in Romania for...

the interbellum period so between the first and second World Wars basically. It was annexed

by the Soviet Union during the war and then afterwards became formally

recognized as part of Ukraine. So I'm going to be showing you both parts of the

historic region of Bukovina. So I'm about to go back to the ex-USSR in more ways than one. You

can see behind me there. My 'marshrutka' or a kind of post-Soviet style bus.

[Ukrainian] - My name is Inna. I'm 28.

And I'm from Chernivtsi region. I was born here, in the city of Novodnistrovsk.

All my friends, classmates, colleagues have never studied the Romanian language.

And even no one wanted to do this.

So, probably, I can't prove this assumption.

Yes, I heard when people speak Romanian, and we identify them,

we hear them. And it seems like 25-30%

of people knew Romanian and speak it when where with friends or family

used it for communication with each other.

[English] - So here I am in Northern Bukovina, Chernivtsi oblast, standing in the historical

university, in the grounds of university. It's really really beautiful here as you can

see behind me. Really stunning in one of the most beautiful universities and its grounds has

probably been in maybe anywhere in Europe.

Before the Second World War this city had a very

mixed population. It was about one-quarter Romanian, one quarter

Ukrainian, one quarter German and one quarter Jewish. And there are so many famous

authors who lived here or were born here from all of those different ethnic groups.

So when people ask me why I come to Ukraine. Right there! That's one of the reasons. Absolutely

beautiful. There are some tourists here but not so many international tourists.

It's quite hard to get here. Prices - it's probably the cheapest place to come to that's beautiful

in all of Europe. The other thing is whether you can in Russian here or another languages

like English or Romanian. I was actually surprised how many people in restaurants

or bars or just even going into the university addressed me in Russian

the same at the bus station and not in Ukrainian. It's kind of mixed. They assume when I start speaking

that I'm not Ukrainian and then they switch to Russian or I'm not Ukrainian speaking.

[Russian] The train station, right?

[Ukrainian] Good, good! - Thank you.

[English] - It's really hot at the moment and the train looks even hotter and if you're

wondering why I'm traveling so much equipment all the time. It's not because

I'm a masochist; it's because I've been working on a training course for you the

viewers and I didn't get it finished before I got on the plane to...

so I had to bring all my lightning equipment with me but at the moment I have

a ridiculous amount of luggage so that's not the way you should travel! So it's

probably I'm carrying like 45 to 50 kgs which is ridiculous!

So my train ride to Lviv, it's gonna to be about four and a half hours. That's one of the

problems with getting here actually is like it's really hard to reach Chernivtsi. If

you were coming from Kiev I don't know it's gonna be a long way, you do have to

take a flight.

[Ukrainian] The first carriage?

- Seat number 15. - Number 15? Ok. Thanks!

[English] So having been to both parts of Bukovina, did I see many similarities and many

differences? The Romanian part in Suceava is like well really I guess Romanian but no

more than that. It's kind of very bucolic looking but here in Chernivtsi

it really felt like a multicultural city, even though the inhabitants today are 90%

Ukrainians but in the city there seems to be a mixture of cultures, so you had churches

synagogues, statues, street names that were all to different ethnicities so either

German, Romanian, Jewish, as well as Ukrainian, and there's also some Polish

heritage and some of course Russian heritage, as it was part of the Soviet Union. Northern Bukovina or

Chernivtsi seems a lot more multi-ethnic in terms of its history and architectural

legacy then, say, Southern Bukovina which is Suceava, which has a very

distinctive regional Romanian flavor. Next stop is Lviv, the most beautiful city in Ukraine
