The Ganga Shloka
Assi, now small stream flowing in the southern Varanasi
and Varuna flowing in the north.
Like everything else in this city
Varuna & Assi have a story of their own.
According to Vamana Purana,
Varuna and Assi originated from the body of the primordial being
at the beginning of time.
I knew I had to visit these two places.
Varuna and Assi
'Varanasi'
The word Kashi, originated from the word 'Kash'
- to shine.
The legends says that this was the ?original ground? upon which
Shiva and Parvati stood in the beginning of time.
Strange, how Gods became humane when they came to this city
- as if, the city itself was an extension of their holiness.
A place where Gods and Goddesses took mortal forms
a place that had stories older than fiction.
I always thought,
if the stones of this city could talk
they would explain the mysteries of the Universe.
When you look around
and you see an old man kneeling before the Ganga,
you know that you have become a part of 'history'.
This man has been here since the beginning of time.
He was here when Tulsidas was writing his verses
He was here when Vyasa was singing his Mahabharata
He has been here since the World Wars.
He was here when Varanasi was built
and he will be here till the apocalypse.
This is 'Banaras'
a place where eternity stands still,
while time moves on
As time passes, the ghats become even more crowded.
everybody has a business at the ghat.
You don't just visit Benaras
You breathe Banaras in the heart of its people.
Ordinary people
living history in their own present time.
No wonder, so much of love and literature and music were born out of the soul of the city.
One transcends to a different world.
Bismillah
'in the name of God'
It will be a sin if I don?t visit that holy place.
Maybe some music still lingers in the echoes of its walls
Banaras is not just about the Ghats.
While a part of Banaras stands in awe at the Ghats,
the other part flows with life, in its gallies
If the ghats form the structure of Banaras,
the gallies are the vains of this city.
If you wish to experience the colours of life,
you have to be here.
The crafts that you long for
- the taste that you crave
- the sight that you dream of
the gallies of Banaras are where you find them.
People talk about Banarasi pan, lassi, kachouri
Ever wanted to explore a place where you could actually smell it before you tasted it!
Well, I have
but no, there is no way I can explain it to you in words.

And that brought me back to the ghats
- the evening prayer
You would think the people are gathering for a festival
No, this is what happens in the ghats of Banaras, every evening
As the evening approaches,
the ghats get ready for the final showpiece.
Full of people of all ages
from the new born to the ancient
The city purifies itself at the pyre of devotion.
As if, the city reaches its culmination
every evening at the ghats of Banaras.
All the stories - all the myths and mysteries
all the rituals and all the prayers
all the billion names of God,
finally rest in the holy waters of Ganga
An entire cosmos, revolving around a stream of water
Ganga - the life giver
Nature
ultimately - it is nature.
You call it God or you call it history
it is but this mass of water
that has been giving life to Banaras since the beginning of time
Ganga - The Goddess
Ganga - Our mother.
And then the Sun rose,
bringing a fresh new morning to the city of Banaras.
I inhaled the warmth of the morning air,
looked straight into the Sun and thought
- 'is this the same sun that brought light to the day Lord Shiva created Banaras?
Did the same Sun shine the day I was born?'
