How To Use English Idioms | Holiday Idioms ☀️🌺🌴🍹 - Duration: 8:35.
Hello! I'm Emma from mmmEnglish. English idioms... can you think of some
examples? "The early bird gets the worm!" "Bite your tongue!" Do they "drive you crazy?"
Idioms are really common English expressions that can be used in formal
and informal situations. They're quite challenging to learn because the meaning
of the whole idiom, all of the words together, often doesn't relate to the
literal meaning of the individual words.
The idiom - as you're painfully aware - has its own unique meaning.
So in this lesson, I'm going to teach you a few useful idioms that will help you to talk about
your holidays. Now I'm sure that you'll be able to think about a holiday that
you've had in the past and use the idioms that I'm going to share in this
lesson to help you talk about them. Now, there are lots of English idioms, but
learning to use some of them will help you to sound creative, interesting and fun
when you're using English. And of course, it will definitely help you to
understand more of what native speakers say. Using idioms correctly in your
English speaking exams like IELTS or TOEFL will definitely impress your
examiner - so it's worth spending some time learning a few idioms that you can
use to talk about holidays that you've had. Now, a quick note. Remember that the
tense changes can affect the verb in the idiom - if there is one. For example,
"We're going to travel light." "We travelled light." "We are travelling light."
So pay close attention to how I'm using the idiom in these examples. Now, let's
look at that same example again in more detail. "To travel light" or "to pack light"
Now, if someone travels light or packs light, they don't take a lot of luggage
with them on a trip. They don't take lots of bags. "We have to walk a fair way from
the station to our hotel, so try to pack light."
"We only stayed for three days, so we packed light!"
"Do you need some help collecting your luggage, or are you travelling light?"
"To hit the road." This idiom means to leave or to start a journey.
"We're going to hit the road at 8am." We're going to leave at 8am.
"We hit the road early so that we reached the village by lunchtime."
Now, this idiom is just as easily used when you're at a barbecue
with friends and you decide it's time to go home. You can say "Okay, it's time to
hit the road" or "It's time I hit the road"
"To catch the sun". This idiom is used to
say that someone is sunburned, burnt by the sun. "We spent the whole day at the
beach so we all caught the sun." To someone who looks sunburnt, you could say
"You look like you caught the sun today!" "Try not to catch too much sun today! Keep your hat on."
Notice how this idiom can change depending on the tense. Same with the
next one - "to live it up" or "to live the life". This idiom is used to say that
someone is really enjoying themselves and they're
having a really good time. without worrying about anything - including money.
"We're going to live it up in a 5 star resort for a few days!"
"We're going to live the life on a beach in Mexico"
"We were living the life and having cocktails by the pool when the cyclone hit."
"To do something on a shoestring"
or "to do something on the cheap." Now this idiom is nothing like the last one.
If you do something on a shoestring or on the cheap, you do it without spending a
lot of money. "Staying in hostels is a good option if you're travelling on a shoestring budget."
"We travelled through France last year on a shoestring!"
"We plan to spend a month in Bali on the cheap and then, live it up in Singapore for a
few days before we fly home."
"At the crack of dawn" This idiom describes the
earliest time in the day, just as the sun is rising. "We were up at the crack of dawn to watch the sun rise."
"It's a long drive, so we set off at the crack of dawn."
"Paul got up at the crack of dawn every day to hike around the island."
"Bright and early" Now, this idiom is similar to the last one,
it's used to explain that something happens early in the morning. It's not
quite as early as at the crack of dawn though. "We had to get up bright and early
to catch the train to Paris." Another idiom that's similar is "first thing".
It means before anything else is done in the morning. "We need to check out first thing tomorrow."
"You need to call and make a reservation first thing. We don't want to miss out!"
"To call it a day" or "call it a night". This idiom means
to stop doing an activity for the rest of the day or to finish what you're doing
at night and go home to bed. "We were so exhausted that we decided to call it a
day and ordered room service in our hotel room!" "Let's just call it a day and
go to the pub!" "I need to call it a night, I've been dancing for 12 hours!!"
"Itchy feet". Okay, so this idiom is used when someone feels the need to travel. They don't want to stay still!
My friends always tell me that I have got itchy feet!
"After being away from work for so long, it's really difficult to sit at my desk for eight
hours a day! I've got itchy feet already!"
"I noticed that Ben is really distracted at the moment. Do you think he's got itchy feet?"

Hong Kong Beer Revolution: Discover Hong Kong's Craft Beer Scene - Duration: 5:13.
Craft beer is getting massive in Hong Kong.
I skipped breakfast for a full day of beer tasting.
So, let's go try some of the best beers
made right here in Hong Kong.
Young Master in Wong Chuk Hang
is all about artisanal ales.
Apart from the classics,
they're also the only brewery in Hong Kong
that age some of their beers in used whiskey barrels.
- We opened in 2013.
We are known to do some classical beers
but also bring in some innovative beers
for the Hong Kong people that they've never tried before.
So this is the Cha Chaan Teng Gose.
Gose is typically a very historic German beer
so we use that recipe
but we put a little Hong Kong twist to it.
We use some green limes and salt
and we salt them for about 8 months.
And then we flush them through the beers
so you'll get that sour
but also a bit of a salted lime kick to it.
- Yeah, the lime flavour comes through.
- Next beer? Ready? - Sure.
- We're the only ones in Hong Kong right now
who are doing a barrel aged program.
This one is Belgian quadrupel aged
in the whiskey barrels for about 7 to 8 months.
So, let's have a taste.
- Yeah.
- That almost tastes like there's actually whiskey in it.
- Right!
- That's awesome! That's really cool.
I've genuinely have not had a beer
that tastes anything like that before.

Little Creatures is one of Australia's
most famous craft breweries
and they've just opened up a new brewery
right here in Kennedy Town.
- Probably start you on the Bright Ale.
We've designed an ale that, although it has flavour,
it's a bit more sessionable, a bit more subdued,
so someone who drinks a lot of lager,
it's not a big jump for their palate.
What are you tasting?
- It's pretty light.
It feels like it just goes down very...
- Quite sessionable? Yeah.
- Yeah, sessionable. Is that the official word?
- That's the official word. You use that in brewing circles.
- Right.
- I heard you're serving some beers
that you can only get over the bar here in Hong Kong.
- So one that we're quite excited about is the K-Town Cali.
So the style of this beer is a California Common.
It uses a hop called Northern Brewer
which is more of a woody or minty character in the beer.
- Yeah, I know what you mean about the woodiness.
- You can feel that difference where it's less fruit
and more of that rugged sort of...
- Yeah, forest flavour.
- Yeah, forest-floor flavour as we'd say.
- Anyway, thanks for letting me try a few beers.

the first craft brewers right here in Hong Kong.
They've recently relaunched
and the new brewers are whipping up
some interesting new brews.
Let's try some beer.
- With craft beer what you really want to do
is to connect and relate with the local culture.
First off, we have the White Pearl.
For this beer, we added some local honey
into the beer as well as some Chinese orange skins
and some dry rose buds.
- I quite like that.
- Yeah, so with Belgian wit,
you definitely taste the honey as an aftertaste.
This is the Betsy Beer.
It's a beer that we brewed with Cathay Pacific.
When you're up at 35,000 feet,
your taste buds can go numb by 30 percent.
We made a beer specifically for that condition.
- Oh, yeah. I get the sourness
but that's kind of interesting though.
- Okay.
- It's been really great to try everything,
but I've got to go to another brewery.
- Okay. Alright.
- Hi, there. - Hi.
- What can I get for you?
- Can I have all the local beers?
- All the local beers?
- I'll have all of them.
- I've been tasting beers all day
and I've still only had a fraction
of what the Hong Kong craft beer scene has to offer.
Luckily, there's craft beer bars like this one
that is swapping the Heinekens and Tsingtaos
of the world for small, international and local brews.
These guys have loads of different beers to try.

'Show Champion' Addresses Kim Jae Hwan's Use of The 'N' Word
Kim Jaw Hwan, a member of Wanna One made famous after the hit series Produce IOI Season 2, has recently been under fire for saying the N word during a broadcast of Show Champion.
It was reported earlier that the Wanna One cutie had filmed a short intro video before the show where his opening greeting uses the N word.
Yo, N*gga, Whats up?! Come on, was the exact phrase that caused the trouble and now Show Champion and YMC Entertainment have come forward about the issue.
YMC Entertainment said, After discussing with the producers of Show! Champion, it has been confirmed that there was no problem with Kim Jae Hwans word choice.
We believe it was simply a misunderstanding that occurred among the international fans in the process of listening and understanding the Korean language..
Show! Champion has also released a statement via Twitter that reads, Kim Jae Hwan was simply expressing I have arrived through a form of improvised rap, just as it was subtitled identically in the video clip.
The expression he used is not a problem at all with the broadcast and was not intended for any certain derogatory meaning. We sincerely hope there are no misunderstandings..
The Twitter user who uploaded the video in the first place even slowed down the video to show proof that Kim Jae Hwan did, in fact, say the N word.
Fans of Wanna One, however, tried to educate the user and explain the use of nega in Korean, defending Kim Jae Hwan.
Now the agency, broadcasting station, and fans are under this same impression. However, whether you speak Korean or not, it is clear the English translation of that sentence would not make sense.
Also, if he indeed did not say Whats up but Im here instead, why did the video subtitles say else wise? It seems no one can get their story straight, but it is obvious that the video and subtitles dont lie and Kim Jae Hwan was caught in another racist K-Pop controversy.
