How Psilocybin Treatment Alters Brain Activity In Depressed Patients - Duration: 8:30.A paper published in Scientific Reports shows, for the first time, the brain changes potentially
underlying the post-acute phase of a psilocybin experience.
The study examined changes in the brain activity of patients with treatment-resistant depression.
And the overall goal of the research was to bridge the gap between observed psychological
changes and the physical activity of the brain.
Before getting into the study, let's review some background information.
There's a growing interest in using psychedelics, such as psilocybin and LSD, for the treatment
of psychiatric conditions.
Accumulating evidence suggests they could be useful for depression, addiction, anxiety,
and other conditions.
Efficacy may exist with and without cooccurring psychotherapy.
So a psychedelic even on its own, at least in a safe, supportive environment, can produce
beneficial effects for patients and perhaps for healthy people.
Findings in healthy volunteers and in patients have shown these drugs elicit powerful experiences
AND lasting psychological changes, such as an increase in openness and a general improvement
in one's quality of life.
There aren't many drug experiences known to facilitate lasting changes of this sort and
it's a pretty unique way of treating psychiatric conditions.
If you have a treatment that yields a lasting benefit, the need for ongoing medication or
psychotherapy is reduced.
This saves people time, money, and side effects.
The evidence doesn't indicate this will work for everyone, but there's been a fairly high
rate of response in the studies so far.
We already have some understanding of how brain activity changes under the influence
of psychedelics.
Research indicates they cause an increase in global connectivity around the brain.
While the integrity of core resting state networks, like the default mode network, declines.
This is a significant shift in how the brain functions.
It may be what allows introspective and sensory experiences to affect people in substantially
different ways when they're on psychedelics.
There's still a lot we need to learn and we know even less about how the brain changes
when a psychedelic wears off.
The goal of this study was to see how psilocybin, a prodrug for the 5-HT2A agonist psilocin,
could affect the brain after a treatment session.
fMRI was used to examine markers of activity prior to treatment and one day after treatment.
So although this doesn't tell use what's happening when someone experiences less depression 6
months later, it can give us insight into the immediate after effects.
A lot of people refer to the day-after effects as an "afterglow," and it's common for people
to feel different in this post-acute period before they return to "normal."
19 patients with treatment-resistant depression received 10 mg of psilocybin and then 25 mg
a week later.
Blood flow was measured using arterial spin labeling and the BOLD signal was used as a
proxy of brain activity.
BOLD allowed the researchers to examine resting state functional connectivity.
Meaning which localized brain regions are functioning together in a time-dependent manner
for a common purpose.
Only 16 ASL results and 15 BOLD results were ultimately available for analysis.
There was a significant decline in depression in connection with psilocybin treatment.
And those benefits were seen the day after treatment and 5 weeks later.
All 19 had at least some decline in symptoms after 1 week.
12 were considered "responders" at this point, meaning they had at least a 50% reduction
in depression.
By 5 weeks, 18 patients had some decrease and 47% were responders.
When looking at whole brain cerebral blood flow, only decreases were seen.
Those declines were significant in a number of areas, which you can see on the screen.
Reduced CBF could be indicative of reduced activity.
Because the amygdala was affected and increased activity in that region has been associated
with depressive symptoms, that data was analyzed further.
The initial post-acute depression reduction significantly correlated with reduced amygdala
CBF.
Though this day-after effect was not predictive of treatment response at 5 weeks.
Moving to the BOLD data, the researchers looked at four regions relevant to depression: the
subgenual anterior cingulate cortex, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, the amygdala, and the parahippocampus.
RSFC with the amygdala wasn't altered, but there were changes with other regions.
An increase in connectivity between the sgACC and posterior cingulate cortex was observed,
but it didn't correlate with initial depression reduction or reduction at 5 weeks.
Another increase was seen between the vmPFC and inferior-lateral parietal cortex.
While this didn't correlate with reductions the day after, it did predict patient response
at 5 weeks, with responders showing significantly greater increases.
Lastly, there was a decline in connectivity between the PH and PFC.
This also didn't correlate with reductions the day after, yet it did predict response
at 5 weeks, with responders showing greater decreases.
One of the findings that's come up in psychedelic research is that the benefit could be tied
to mystical or peak experiences.
If you have those experiences, you might get more from the drug.
For this reason, the researchers looked to see if these experiences mediate differences
in parahippocampal RSFC.
Indeed, patients with the greatest peak scores had the greatest declines in PH RSFC with
limbic areas, like the amygdala, and with default mode network regions, like the posterior
cingulate cortex.
Based on these results, once you enter the post-acute period, there are changes in brain
activity, but they're substantially different from the acute period.
Acutely the changes are characterized by disintegration of resting state networks and global integration.
Yet post-acutely there seems to be a reintegration in those networks and relatively minimal effects
on global integration.
An example of this is the default mode network, which is best known for underlying the sense
of Self.
Psychedelics initially decrease DMN functional integrity, yet post-acutely, psilocybin seemed
to cause an increase in connectivity.
Post-treatment increases between certain DMN nodes even predicted response at 5 weeks.
Other studies have shown both increased and decreased DMN connectivity in depression,
so it's not clear how surprising this result is.
Regardless, the acute decline in RSFC followed by a seemingly beneficial increase, led the
researchers to suggest this could be considered a "reset" in the brain.
The DMN goes through a period of disintegration and then reintegrates to restore normal, non-problematic
functioning.
How a psychedelic like psilocybin causes this isn't known.
The researchers also focused on connectivity changes between the parahippocampus and prefrontal
cortex.
RSFC between these regions is typically elevated in depression, while psilocybin, at least
in the post-acute period, decreased connectivity.
And that decrease may be mediated by peak or mystical experiences.
In summary, this paper explored psilocybin's post-acute impact on blood flow and connectivity
for the first time.
Some functional connectivity within the default mode network seems to increase after treatment.
And specific increases between the vmPFC and iLPC nodes of the DMN were greatest in patients
with a response at 5 weeks.
It's important to remember that statistically significant correlations between brain activity
and psychological responses could be false positives.
Far more work is required before we'll know if these changes explain the post-acute effects,
not to mention treatment response weeks and months later.
The study was also limited by a small sample size and it didn't have a control condition.
So all of these things should be kept in mind when interpreting the results.

Bentley Continental GT Supersports review - Duration: 7:05.It's a shame, but this isn't the new Continental with the cool Toblerone pop-up satnav screen.
Still there are 700 reasons to drive this car.
Yes, 700 hp.
I'm remembering the Bentley Continental V8. That was the base model with 500 hp.
I thought the car was nuts when I drove it. It's big and not very agile with all this weight.
However, because it has lots of power, it make you go "whoah".
That's this car, plus 200 extra hp.
My phone is on the rear seat now.
It's an insane car. I'm driving...
Do you hear that?
That's fun too. It makes so much noise. I thought it wouldn't be that bad.
But this is when you're sitting inside. It has double glazing.
Everything is insulated. It's loud inside, but it's f*ing loud outside.
This is the final model of this generation Bentley Continental GT.
These are top-of-the-range to make everyone buy the old model.
You often see this at Porsche, for example.
The 911 GT3 RS 4.0 was a final edition.
The development took 2 years.
How do you turn a Bentley Continental GT Speed into a Supersports?
A Bentley Continental GT Speed has lots of hp already.
Higher turbo pressure would do the trick, but they didn't.
They took their time to make this a savage Bentley Continental GT.
Different turbos and a different intercooler make for 700 hp and 1017 Nm (750 lb ft) torque.
It's the fastest Bentley and the fastest 4-seater in production ever.
Until now. There will be something faster in 5 years.
This is very fast, especially when you realize this is a heavy car.
I'm overtaking someone.
This is done very fast too.
0-100 kph (62 mph) takes 3.5 seconds.
After that the fun really begins. The top speed is 336 kph (209 mph).
We would've had to inflate the tires a bit more. It interrupts by beeping.
When you go full throttle on country roads and look at your speedometer, you see 190 kph (118 mph).
It's a strange scale. That's about 120 miles.
You're going too fast too quickly.
Fortunately, the whole world can hear you speeding.
They can't say they didn't see you coming. They will have heard you. Here.
This sounds like a vacuum cleaner on one ear and fireworks in the other when it backfires.
It's very very loud outside. It's relatively quiet inside.
The suspension has been changed too.
With all-wheel drive, 60% of the power goes to the rear.
A Bentley Continental GT has all-wheel drive.
The looks are sharper too.
You can recognize the Bentley Continental GT Supersports by a number of details.
It has bare carbon details, a front splitter, and the ridiculous rear spoiler.
It's not very chic. Apparently it can be omitted.
Let me make some noise. Shift down a gear.
And accelerate.
The ceramic brakes are standard. That's good to know.
It brakes good too.
The sound and the sensation of speed are unique.
These cars are addictive.
Accelerate again to overtake, and lift. Shift down a gear.
The nicely burbling exhaust...
It's too over-the-top.
It's like fireworks.
I'm trying to come up with a conclusion for this video, for whom this car is.
The conclusion is that this is a bizarre machine to have fun with.
To accelerate fast and make noise with.
Maybe we have to end the video here.
I want to let you listen to a couple more verses of the Bentley Continental GT Supersports.
It sounds very erudite to say that.
Meanwhile, I'm hooning a Bentley really hard.

If you do not let me starve to death, I'm completely sure. I hope you like this video very much and good for
our healthy salad we will use
tomato. a can of tuna. on this side we already have the chopped potato
cooking and two boiled eggs and also onion of course
so we're going to chop everything up here in that container and let's see
how is it going good now we add the onion and
add a can of tuna tomato and now we're going to add what is
the cooked potato that we have already chopped previously you have to realize that
be well very soft. well now let's add the carrot this is
optional because there are people who like and
people who do not like me personally. I like it because it has a
They give it a delicious flavor and it has lots of vitamins.
We're going to peel it and in this case I'm going to grate it so it has
a much more delicious flavor
well here that I have the cooked potatoes the list is in account that it is well
soft and here I have the carrot grated as I had said I like
more scratched because that way we say the taste is as better and if you are of the people
who does not like carrots this is a very good way to eat them if not
You will know so much carrot. so well let's add the potato
to our salad
well now let's add the two boiled eggs we're going to take away the
peel and cut them into pieces and add them also to our salad
in this case I used two boiled eggs because it is a pretty portion
great but it's for you you can only use it 1
what we are going to do is a little vinaigrette to give it a little
more flavor we are going to use lemon salt we are going to solve it here and then we are going
to add to our salad everything goes in tastes and you like it a lot
more lemon a little more salty as you want to your liking
now I'm going to add mayonnaise this is also optional
if you want you can use a low calorie but in this case I'm going to
add is but only a little
now it's time to try our install always stayed delicious
I invite you to do it too
Dad, what's up? .... it's good

Joni's Corner: Put on a Smile - Duration: 2:05.Hi, I'm Joni Eareckson Tada.
Life is hard—
And I mean it.
And I can honestly say, when it comes to dealing with a chronic condition,
life only gets harder.
It's why I hold on to First Peter chapter 1, which reminds me that "In this
(that is, in my condition)
you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have
had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials."
Tell you what
All kinds of trials is right—quadriplegia, depression, breast cancer … and chronic pain?
But I tell you what, the smile on my face is real.
How so?
My chronic condition is only for a little while.
It's momentary compared to the surpassing glory that my response is accruing in heaven.
I mean knowing that?
I can hold on a little bit longer.
God's grace will get me through, and His grace will get you through.
Even when you feel you can't take it anymore, the God of grace is there to catch you with
his everlasting arms.
So can you do it?
Can you rejoice with me though now for a little while your suffering all kinds of trials?
Jesus says in Matthew chapter 24
that he who stands firm to the end shall be saved.
So friends stand firm.
One day, you and I are going to look back, and not only will the suffering have passed, but it will seem like…
just a little while… really, only momentary.
That's God's promise so join me in believing it !
And living on it today.

Exploring Haunted Places // the Halloween vlog - Duration: 12:33.morning excuse my morning hair you get morning
hair in the morning problem today's the day that I'm supposed to start filming
the Halloween video however I have no idea what to do I've tossed around a few
ideas I've asked you guys on Twitter what you think would be cool for the
video and that's where we are right now but seeing us halloween is coming up i
need to carve some pumpkins so i'm gonna do that and see if hopefully during the
mini monotonous hours spent doing that I'll have some fragment of an idea
it's been about 30 minutes now and now it's started raining so I have to stop for a while
but I did finish this guy looks very friendly which is not quite what I was
car I was going for kind of a Cheshire cat type smile but he just looks very
friendly and happy I don't really mind it
okay rain the rain is an issue so the weather right now is not not too good
I found a dry spot but the pumpkins are all the way down there and I'm right
here, um . . this is fine everything is fine it's great
so it's been a few days my pumpkin army is finally complete right there all of
these guys but carving pumpkins is not as easy as it sounds especially when you
carve like six of them so I am going to go to bed now so I will see you in the
morning people
can't say I'm not intrigued
I just, I don't get it
and also what are these, are these- ohhhh, I misjudged-
okay so these may or may not be the vlog ideas I
was looking for they're barely legible but I think that this one says turn the
drone into a ghost which is an idea that I like that's a good idea it's clever
explore an abandoned house sounds fun sounds spooky here's something I hadn't
thought about can you read that see how it says make a vlog comprised entirely
of jump- and finally explore a haunted bridge I think this might be my favorite
one out of all four of those so I'm going to try to find a haunted bridge to
explore tomorrow but it's late I got distracted I need to go to sleep
goodnight the next morning I went to the first location an old stone bridge that
a viewer recommended I visit the bridge is supposedly haunted with
visitors claiming to see unexplained lights and even figures at nighttime but
getting good footage in the woods at dark is nearly impossible so I was just
here to film a nice cinematic edit
the bridge was cool but I was looking for something a bit spookier the next
weekend we drove to the mountains to visit some relatives and for a second my
hopes were high I researched an abandoned mysterious house on top of a
hill a black mansion surrounded by a collection of crimes and let's just say
questionable activities unfortunately the house was demolished a few years ago
so I wandered around a bit looking for a cool abandoned spot
eventually I left empty-handed or empty SD carded? I don't know but before the
weekend was over I had found a pretty promising spot
so I'm in a cemetery right now trying to be quiet out of respect for anyone else who
would be here I did consider whether or not I should actually come here like is
it disrespectful but it seems like mostly everyone here
is dead and if I were dead I wouldn't necessarily care so I figured it was all
right this is what a lot of people believe to be the most haunted place in the
state most "haunted" place in the state closes as dusk
looks like dusk
this is the spot that you see online gotta go to the very end there's
stones back here in the woods and there's a train track right there spoopy
any second now
so that is that that is the entire Halloween video I you enjoyed it if not
for anything else then for the cinematography and editing I did
actually try to make a drone ghost but everything went wrong
looks like perfect drone weather great
if you enjoy videos like this I'll be back with another one in one month but
until then remember like subscribe and of course keep creating awesome things I
will see you in the next one goodbye

It Came From Planet 9 - The Planetary Post with Robert Picardo - Duration: 6:20.This is Robert Picardo and you're watching the Planetary Post.
It is Halloween on the Planetary Post and I am the Phantom of the Orbit. This is a
very spooky episode. Fans of quantum entanglement will especially enjoy this
episode and if you didn't understand that joke then please look up spooky
action at a distance on Google and once you have... could you explain it to me?
First off, just in time for Halloween
we've introduced a new journalistic story on the search for extraterrestrial
life or SETI it's called: Is there anybody out there? The Planetary Society has been involved with
SETI since the beginning of the organization just check out this retro
clip of Carl Sagan and Steven Spielberg flipping the switch on a giant satellite
dish called META.
META II is a duplicate of META I which began searching the
Northern Hemisphere in 1985 when motion picture producer and director Steven
Spielberg threw the switch to kick off the program.
META was a radio telescope
listening for signs of intelligent life out there. Steven Spielberg went on to
direct and produce 'E.T. The Extraterrestrial' which is not a
documentary I understand. The search for alien intelligence has a compelling
story filled with secret meetings, blustering politicians, and unexplained signals.
You can unravel the whole story at planetary.org/seti
Moving on, say aloha to Haumea's rings! That's right, there are many
trans-neptunian worlds out there and one of them, Haumea, had scientists excited
recently when rings, kind of like Neptune's, were discovered around it and
these rings were actually found in part using telescopes funded by the Planetary
Society. Haumea is a small dwarf planet way beyond Neptune and like I
said there are lots of small worlds out there, but now some scientists are saying
there may be another big world out there. To get to the bottom of this
I interviewed none other than the planet 9 theorizer himself, Dr. Konstantin Batygin.
I even loaned him my cape!
Dr. Batygin, thanks for joining us today.
It's my pleasure to be here, but I'll have you know that today I am Count
Konstantinovich from Planet 9.
Could you give me a little background on Planet 9? What is Planet 9?
Absolutely. Planet 9 is an object which orbits the Sun. It is approximately 10 Earth masses and it
orbits the Sun on a very very long period orbit.
What does it look like?
I think it's purple with and kind of pink polka dots.
You don't know what it looks like.
I have not seen it.
How do you discover something you don't even know if it's really there?
Through the gravitational pull that it exerts upon the rest of the solar system.
Through the evidence that is there.
First of all, if you go out in the solar system beyond
about 250 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun all orbits that you
see around you are all clustered together. This cluster of orbits would
disperse over geologically short periods of time if planet 9 were not there.
Now, there are other trans-neptunian planetoids that were candidates at one time?
There are all of these bodies that are not quite planets. They're a
little too small they don't exert a gravitational field which is significant
enough to strongly influence their environment, but they too are
exceptionally interesting objects particularly their geophysics. At the end
of the day, in astronomy, your mass matters a lot.
We only discovered the Kuiper belt 20 years ago?
Indeed this is all at the frontier of what is currently
possible. This is why what we do is so exciting. We're so lucky to be alive today.
To our younger viewers this is the face of a man jazzed by science. Look at
how thrilled this guy is. I'm never that thrilled about anything I'm doing!
We've discovered the existence, the theoretical existence, we've discovered the evidence
now all we have to do is find it in the night sky which is going to take a huge
telescope, it's going to take a lot of observation, and then once you find it
you're going to name it and you're going to name it "Planet Picardo" is what I'm thinking.
We were gonna go with Bob. I'm happy with Planet Bob.
I'd like to thank Dr. Batygin for joining us today. It's a real pleasure thanks for having me.
I'd also like to thank your double, Count Konstantini for joining us.
And I wish you both great fortune on discovering your mystery secret planet!
Wow! He just became invisible - like Planet 9!
That was a Halloween treat, but there are other holidays coming up and if you're like me it's
always hard to find that perfect gift, so think about this: share the passion,
beauty, and joy of space exploration by giving someone you love a membership to
the Planetary Society. To find out more go to planetary.org/gift
Happy Halloween and thanks for watching, space fans. See you next time...
Hey hey, Bill Nye here, CEO of the Planetary Society and together we can, dare I say it...
Change the channel!
Change our shorts!
Change the world! I don't know if this Bill Nye
costume is very convincing
Bill Nye! Oh man, I gotta get a selfie.
Awesome, I watched you in grade school!

Balancing Ambient Light & Strobe: Two Minute Tips with David Bergman - Duration: 2:33.Hey, I'm photographer David Bergman and
this is Two Minute Tips for AdoramaTV.
Today I'm going to talk about balancing
your foreground and background, when
shooting with flash outdoors. Sometimes
you might find yourself shooting
outdoors in bad light. Maybe you've just
started to play around with taking the
flash off of your camera, and want to use
it outside. But how do you add in the
flash while still making a
natural-looking image. Here's the trick -
you want to balance the foreground and
the background,
so the exposures are relatively close to
each other. If your foreground is really
bright and your background is dark then
it'll look like an unnatural flash lit
photo, and of course if the background is
too bright and your subject is too dark,
well you can see how that looks.
Here's the thing, when you're shooting
and you have a background that's far
away like a skyline - you can't change the
light on it. I don't care how many speed
lights you have, you won't have enough to
light up the Manhattan skyline. But you
can change your camera settings to make
the background brighter or darker.
So in this case the background takes priority
and you want to set your camera's
exposure for that now that you're locked
in on the background exposure, you can
add in light to your subject in the
foreground. You have total control over
that light because you can change the
output on the flash. There are a lot of
ways to do it depending on what kind of
flash you're using. I prefer to shoot
manual for consistency, but with a speed
light you can also shoot on TTL mode, and
use exposure compensation to dial it up
or down as necessary. Lastly if you can
get your subject in the shade, so that no
sunlight is hitting them, then it gives
you a lot more control. Since the only
light hitting her, is coming from the
strobe, and if you under expose the
background just a little bit, it'll give
you a deeper more saturated color and
make for a cool image. So remember in an
outdoor flash situation where you can't
light what's behind your subject, set
your camera exposure for the background
then add your light in on your subject,
and adjust to taste. Balance your
foreground and background, and you'll
make beautiful, natural-looking images
every single time.

5 Mistakes Most People Make When They Get Diagnosed With Cancer - Duration: 5:09.5 Mistakes Most People Make When They Get Diagnosed With Cancer
by Edward Morgan
There are a lot of things you might do when youre diagnosed with cancer: worry incessantly,
research nonstop, talk to family and friends, and probably do your fair share of crying.
However, there are also several things you should be careful not to do when youre
first diagnosed if you want to give yourself a fighting chance of beating this illness.
Inspired by Juicing for Health, here is a list of five of the top mistakes people make
immediately after getting a cancer diagnosis.
1. Going directly into mainstream treatment
Its a perfectly natural reaction when youre facing a deadly disease to tell your doctors
to fix it as fast as they can. Perhaps you even made an appointment for the next step
before leaving the office the day you got the bad news.
Time might not be on your side, but you can still afford to take an hour or two to research
your options and find out if you could be a candidate for safer alternatives before
committing to chemotherapy, for example.
Youll also want to be careful about getting too many diagnostic tests. A second opinion
on your diagnosis isnt a bad idea, but you dont want to subject yourself a lot
of tests that use radiation, which can contribute to cancer and even cause it.
2. Sticking to just one protocol
Recognize that more than one approach might be useful or necessary. Dont fall into
the trap of thinking that merely juicing carrots will solve all your problems. It may help,
but taking cannabinoidsand doing yoga, for example, might give you even greater benefits.
However, that is not to say that mixing protocols with radiation or chemotherapy is advisable;
research very carefully before mixing these types of treatments.
3. Ignoring the importance of diet
If you rush into anything at all after your cancer diagnosis, it should be dietary changes.
This cannot be emphasized enough: cancer cells feed and thrive on refined sugar and refined
carbohydrates. Cut them out completely and avoid them as though your life depends on
it it does!
Your diet should now focus on organic plant foods, and you should also cut out red and
processed meats.
Studies have shown that a ketogenic diet has some potential to slow the progression of
cancer, including cancer that has metastasized. Its ability to reduce blood sugar could be
behind its ability to slow the growth of tumors, but more studies are needed.
4. Failing to detox
Destroying cancer cells is a good thing, but you also need to get them out of your body
because they create a big burden on your liver.
If youre eating a purely organic diet based on plants and juicing, youll get some detoxing
effects, but some people might need further detoxification.
5. Overlooking emotional, mental and spiritual healing
Cancer treatment, particularly in conventional medicine, tends to focus solely on the physical
body. This is certainly where a lot of effort should be concentrated, but ignoring the value
of the mind and spirit is a huge mistake you dont want to make.
Did you know that mindfulness-based art therapy can help improve stress levels and the quality
of life in cancer patients?
This uses expressive art activities in conjunction with breathing, walking and yoga. Reducing
distress in women with breast cancer has been shown to improve immune function, and its
likely useful for other types of cancer as well.
In fact, yoga is extremely powerful and has been show in studies to help emotionally as
well as physically, making it a very valuable tool in your cancer fight.
Even if you go the conventional route, youll find that yoga can reduce your fatigue, inflammation,
depression, anxiety and pain. Some yoga centers even specialize in helping cancer patients.
A cancer diagnosis is devastating, and how you choose to proceed is a very personal decision
that will depend on your beliefs about what is best for you.
Its important to get as much information as possible from dependable sources before
committing to anything, and always be sure to listen to your body!

The Changing Scope of Who is a Publisher - Duration: 3:03.Hi there.
I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting and this is Publishing Defined.
Today I am going to discuss the changing scope of who or what a publisher is.
I have previously spoken about what is academic publishing, in particular the traditional
roles of acquisition and business development, production and editorial services, and marketing
and sales.
See a link at the end of this video to that video.
But today I am going to talk about the expanding definition or scope of who a publisher is.
Typically, in scholarly publishing, companies like Elsevier or Wiley or Lippincott Williams
and Wilkins would come to mind if someone mentioned for-profit publishing.
Or, one might think about large professional societies or associations and their flagship
journals like IEEE, the American Chemical Society, or the American College of Physicians.
Others would rightly include database companies or continuing education organizations as publishers.
But increasingly, a wider net is now being cast.
Online only publishing companies of course are on the list.
But how about video sites like YouTube or Vimeo.
Or podcasting networks like Panoply or Earwolf.
Facebook and other social media sites are creating an enormous amount of content each
day, albeit user-generated.
Active bloggers are creating original content that sometimes can exceed what a journal or
magazine might publish in a month, especially if you take into account the comment section
to the blog.
All of these groups can lay claim to the term publisher.
Additionally, aggregators, whether in news or scholarly content are an interesting case.
In the purest form, they are creating little to no new content but I would imagine many
might view sites like Flipboard, Inoreader, or Feedly as publishers.
And then considering sites like Reddit or Quora that generate an enormous amount of
content, the line becomes even grayer.
And finally, is the individual.
Many people through the avenues mentioned above or at their own sites are creating a
lot of their own content.
Individuals are assuredly becoming publishers themselves.
When the word publisher is used today, in scholarly publishing or more broadly, we will
have to continue to expand our thinking quite a bit beyond the traditional organizations.
Well that's it.

MY CRAFTING SECRETS | @karenkavett - Duration: 7:14.Hi everyone, look who I'm here with today!
It's...the Crafty Lumberjacks!
Hi!
So if you don't know, this is Andrew, and this is Dennis.
And they are the Crafty Lumberjacks.
They also make videos for HGTV.
We're going to play a game today and it's all about crafting and how well we know each
other.
I feel like I'm at the disadvantage because you guys know each other really well obviously.
That's true.
Here's how it's going to work.
We have two bowls.
So in this bowl I have three pieces of paper.
So I'm going to pick a piece of paper and it's gonna say Dennis.
What celebrity would Dennis most want to craft with?
Am I going to cheat?
Am I cheating?
No, no cheating.
So what did you say?
I wrote Meryl.
Meryl Streep.
I put RuPaul.
Those are both great guesses.
We just had this whole conversation about drag race and how much we all love it.
Love it.
Ok, the real answer.
What's the real answer?
Meryl!
Ohhh!
Point for Andrew.
That is such a disadvantage for you because.
But that's been one of my dreams forever, to just be with Meryl, no matter what.
However, you would love RuPaul too.
Oh my gosh.
Would that not be the greatest video?
How do we get RuPaul on HGTV Handmade?
We need him.
Can we make this happen?
Yes please!
I picked Karen.
Ooh, ok so what are we going to find out about me?
What DIY skill does Karen want to learn?
Oh my gosh!
Actually I don't even know the answer to this.
Let me think.
You can already do everything.
I know!
That's not true.
That is so true.
That is not true.
Yes it is.
I wrote quilting.
Oh, good guess.
Ok.
And I guessed needlepoint.
Oh, that's, ok that's also one that I really want to learn, I've never really
been into quilting, sorry.
Oh that's ok.
But I put sewing clothes from scratch.
Ooooh.
Because I can modify clothes that already exist, but I just don't have the patience
to use patterns.
Ok my turn! Andrew.
What is Andrew's favorite music to craft to?
Ok you guys craft together all the time.
We usually watch TV though, his favorite music.
*humming* Is that your music?
Is that your crafting music?
I gave it away!
Now we know.
Me humming.
Ok, I put seasonal holiday music depending what the season is.
I also went broad, I just wrote showtunes.
Ohhh.
Holiday!
Ohhhhh.
My first, my first response was 90s pop.
That's our go to as well.
Gosh Karen I know, it's just you're not like with us.
The problem is we're like together all the time.
But showtunes and holiday, both strong contenders.
Alright it's my turn again.
What is Dennis's favorite craft supply?
Now I'm trying to remember every video that you guys have every done and like which one
shows up the most.
I put flannel fabric, because they're the lumberjacks!
Good one, that is good!
I put Mod Podge.
Ooh, good guess.
What's the answer?
Sorry you both got it wrong.
I just put dollar store anything.
I love crafting with things from the dollar store.
Ok, that's solid.
But flannel, I almost put fabric.
Oh really?
Because I love using fabric.
What's your favorite?
Well, what if that's another question?
Ohhh.
My favorite is gilding paint, gold gilding paint.
Made by our friend Martha Stewart, herself.
She mixes it in her garage.
Yes, she does everything herself.
Mix it up.
Ok babe.
Oh is it me?
Karen!
Yaaaas.
What is Karen's least favorite craft supply?
Ooh, what's my least favorite?
Looking around your apartment here.
Yeah, what don't you see?
I put dull xacto knife.
Good guess, ok.
No one like a dull xacto knife.
I put yarn?
Just because we were just talking about like buying yarn and only using like two feet of
it and just having these spools of yarn everywhere.
That's a good guess too, I put anything where the glitter falls off.
I had this huge roll of glitter, glittery ribbon that I never wanted to use because
then everything it touched got glittery but I didn't want to throw it out because there
was a ton of ribbon on there.
And then one day I just like I can't deal with this anymore, I had to throw it out.
You know it actually takes me a long time to replace my xacto knife blades.
Really?
Yeah like dull blades aren't my biggest bother.
Fair enough.
What YouTuber would Andrew most want to collaborate with?
What YouTubers does Andrew know?
Alright, I guessed someone but I feel like again this is not going to be right.
Alright I put Colleen Ballinger.
Ohhhh.
I put...Karen!
Me?
I put I'm sitting next to her!
Ohhhh.
Well there you go!
I mean I think that's probably a good note to end this on.
I think so too.
I guess I didn't have to write quite so many questions.
I mean I think you guys are the winners and I'm just the loser.
Noo, never a loser.
I think we should just read another question and we can just all talk about it.
Because I wrote these and I want to use them.
Ok what job would blank want to have if they weren't a crafter?
Ooh ok what job would you guys want to have?
Well actors obviously.
Yeah, I mean not me, I can't act.
You act all the time in your videos!
I act as myself!
Oh, I know what I want to be.
A wedding planner.
Oooh.
Because I would still get to craft and then I could organize everything, it would be so
fun.
And she's so organized, it's crazy.
Spreadsheets for days.
There's one spreadsheet.
What craft supply can blank never resist buying?
Oh mine's so obvious.
Washi tape.
Perler beads.
Yeah any type of tape I feel like, look at all that duct tape.
What would mine be?
Oh paper, like I loved colored paper.
Oh same.
Andrew's great with paper.
I don't know about myself.
I mean I like seasonal stuff.
Yeah you guys have a lot of - we love the holidays.
Their Halloween video where they're just going through all of their decorations, it's
what like 12 minutes long.
That's edited down.
It's incredible.
What craft supply does blank have the most of?
I mean again mine is obvious.
Washi Tape.
Duct tape.
We have so many scissors and just a lot of like everything.
So many scissors.
I know, and we always use the same pair.
Oh, same!
I have like 30 pairs in there and I never use them!
We just look at our mess all the time.
Yup, yup.
It's awful.
So those were our crafting secrets.
What that a clickbaity enough title for you guys?
So thank you guys so much for watching and I hope you guys liked the Crafty Lumberjacks
here.
Make sure you go subscribe to their channel, and follow them on Instagram and all the social
stuff, I'll put it right down below.
And make sure you head on over to HGTV Handmade, because we did an actual DIY video with all
three of us, we decorated some notebooks for fall and winter and they're really cute
so you'll definitely want to go and check those out.
Let us know in a comment what celebrity you'd want to craft with.
And we hope to see you soon!
Alright, bye guys!
Bye!
