5 Phrasal Verbs with BLOW! 🌬 Vocabulary Lesson | Practice English - Duration: 10:19.

Hello! I'm Emma from mmmEnglish!

Back with another phrasal verbs lesson this week

and I wonder if you can guess

what the verb in our phrasal verb is this week.

Blow.

Actually, a lot of my students have trouble

pronouncing this word. Do you?

The two consonant sounds at the start are a

little tricky to push together

and so it can sound a little bit like you're

saying below.

It's quite hard to hear the difference between the two.

Blow.

And

below.

They sound very similar, don't they?

And that's because the first syllable is

unstressed in below and you can hear

the very, very lazy schwa sound

below.

Below.

Now, blow.

My tongue is already in the position of the

sound

when my lips part to make the

sound.

Blow.

Blow.

Blow is one syllable

and below is two syllables.

There's a little extra vowel sound in there

that you need to make sure that you include

when you say below

and you exclude when you say blow.

Okay, I got a little sidetracked there.

So I started talking about something different to what I

really wanted to talk to you about today!

Phrasal verbs with blow.

Blow.

So all phrasal verbs in English are

made up of a verb

and either a preposition like up

or an adverb like apart.

Now phrasal verbs are frustrating to learn

but super fun to use once you know how

and I have made a video with my top tips for learning

phrasal verbs. You can check it out right there

but one tip that I do want to share with you today

is don't let phrasal verbs overwhelm you!

There are hundreds and hundreds of phrasal verbs

that you will need to learn

but today you're just going to focus on five

and this week, I only want you to focus on those

five phrasal verbs.

Okay, let's crack on with the lesson!

Starting with blow off.

Now blow off has a few different meanings

depending on who you're talking to.

My American friends like to use this word

when they're deliberately not meeting someone

when they've made a plan or

they've said that they would

but they're deliberately choosing not to.

They don't care about the commitment that they made.

I'm supposed to meet Sam in 20 minutes

but I'll just blow him off.

But my British friends

always laugh at this phrasal verb because it means

to fart.

To pass wind?

Oh I don't know there's about a hundred different ways

to say that but

it's the air that comes from your bum.

Did you just blow off?!

In Australia we rarely use that phrasal verb for anything

but we do use the expression

"to blow someone's socks off"

which is an idiom used when someone or something

really surprises or impresses you.

He said the show blew his socks off.

Blow out.

Used with candles.

When it's your birthday you've got to blow out the

candles on your cake.

Have you heard of the expression

to blow someone or something out of the water?

It means to completely destroy or completely

beat something to show that someone or something

is much, much better than someone else.

Now I know that I can swim fast

but Katherine blew me out of the water.

Now you'll also see this phrasal verb

as a compound noun

which might confuse you for a second

but this is a noun.

Most often it's used when a car tire bursts

especially if you're travelling at really high speeds.

We were running on time, but we've had a blowout,

so I don't think we'll arrive at 6.

Now in Australia, we also use this phrasal verb

quite frequently to describe a sudden

increase in something.

Usually relating to money.

We've had a bit of a blowout.

We spent too much, we've spent too much money.

The government was under pressure

after the huge budget blowout.

To blow up.

Now, blow up has a few different meanings

one is used when something is destroyed

by an explosion.

Often it's used with bombs or cars or buildings.

The soldiers blew up the old shoe factory.

As the sun rose,

they saw that the hospital had been blown up.

Now this phrasal verb can be separable or inseparable.

You can also say they blew the hospital up.

You can also blow something up by filling it with air

like a balloon or a tire or a beach ball.

The front wheel on my bike needs blowing up.

Can you help me blow up these balloons?

When you're talking about a photo that you want

to make larger or bigger to fit in a frame,

then you would blow it up.

How much will it cost to blow up this picture?

Now you could blow up at somebody too,

which means to become really angry at them.

My dad blew up at me when I arrived home late.

I didn't mean to blow up at you before, I'm sorry.

Now there's an idiom that you may have heard before,

it's when something blows up in your face.

That's when something goes wrong unexpectedly.

Maybe it embarrasses you or makes you feel ashamed.

I'm worried that that plan is going to

blow up in your face, it's not a good idea.

Well, that blew up in my face, didn't it?

To blow apart.

To blow apart is used in a similar context.

When something is completely destroyed

in an explosion, it is blown apart.

After the gas explosion, the main factory was

completely blown apart.

But this phrasal verb can also be used to show that

an idea is completely false

by putting forward another much better argument.

The student's explanation blew apart

the professor's theory.

So the students explanation proved that the professor's

theory was incorrect or not true.

He blew it apart,

completely shattered it.

To blow away.

So a strong wind can blow something away, right?

The wind blows and if it's strong, it's going to blow

things away, rubbish, trees.

Really strong winds, cars, boats.

But you've probably heard me use this phrasal verb

to say that I'm really impressed

and pleased by something.

I use it all the time.

In fact, there is another video where you can watch me

explain it right here.

The fact that I'm sitting here in my home in Australia

teaching students all around the world, blows me away!

Well, how many of these phrasal verbs

did you already know?

Perhaps you knew all of them

but maybe you learnt a couple of new ways to use them.

If you enjoyed this lesson

make sure you subscribe to my channel by clicking

that red button right there.

I make a new lesson every single week.

Now if you want my top tips and recommendations

for using and learning phrasal verbs,

then make sure you check out this video right here.

Or just check out some of my other lessons

on that playlist there.

Thanks for watching and I'll see you next week.

Bye for now!

Claire Quigley Testimonial of Your Inner Mentor Results Coaching - Duration: 5:11.

Hi, my name is Claire Quigley, and I'm a client of Your Inner Mentor [Results Coaching]

and I wanted to talk to you today about working with Caz

what that's helped me to achieve in my life and in my business so far

and just really give you a taste of how working with Caz has really

produced some really great results in a very short time for me

So, when I initially spoke to Caz

God, a while ago now, I was a mum of a year year old, Dara.

and I had been working in corporate in the marketing space in Canon for the last five plus years.

and I decided a lifestyle change but I still needed and wanted to contribute to business

and I made the decision to move to a more rural area with my husband but I

definitely wanted to get into the consultancy space, which I had operated in before stepping into corporate

So, when I spoke with Caz

it was a great conversation. She asked some really strong questions that made me immediately go, okay, this person

is trying to get to the crux of what I'm trying to do here. It's not just setting up a business. It's about

trying to understand where I'm at in my life and the change that I'm going through

and how I can use that to my... to my strengths so

what I've found fantastic about working with Caz is a- she cares

so if I'm in a bit of a pickle or I just need to speak to somebody who gets the context of where I'm at

I pick up the phone, or I text her and they let me grab five minutes and really appreciate your perspective on this.

The other thing that I really enjoy doing is working with Caz through a structure.

So for me as a highly visual person who gets shiny objectivitis quite a lot,

it is fantastic for me because I now start to make sure that everything I do

is towards a longer-term goal rather than doing something that seems good at the start

but may not necessarily be getting me where I want to go in the long term.

So her Results Architecture, the process through which she brought me through,

and I just want to say as well all of this has been remote

so I live in northern New South Wales. Caz lives in Melbourne, and we have a fantastic relationship.

So it is very very powerful, her toolkit. Also the fact that Caz,

because of her, I guess her cross spectrum, experience in terms of NLP and so, on she can pick up certain things in what or how I say

and things and she would question me on that and really get to

what I'm trying to do or what my ultimate issue is that I'm trying to solve

even though, I may not know it myself sometimes, she can pull that out of me.

And for me as well you know I'm one of these people I love trying to develop and learn and grow and you know

be more in the world from a professional and from a personal point of view.

I've always struggled with the concept of how to do these things when you're not having a good day.

So you know my son doesn't sleep through the night. I get up in the morning and I'm going, holy crap, right, try and get through the day.

But using the tools that Caz has given me

I can now sit there and go okay, well, if I do these three things I have a list in front of me

That's a purposeful list that will get me somewhere so if I do nothing else other than those three things

I've done something productive that day so even knowing that there has been hugely powerful for me because

It's easy to do this stuff when you're in a good space when you're feeling good, and you're feeling powered and empowered

but when you're struggling or when you just need, particularly as a professional mum who works for herself,

Having that connection is is the massive in my life day-to-day, so I just wanted to share this with you. And I would highly recommend

talking to Caz and seeing is there something that you wanted to achieve and can if you can do that together.

She's straight to the point. She's full of sass, she cares massively, has a huge heart,

But she's super smart and she gets you results and that's why I highly recommend working with her.

So, I look forward to hearing how some other people go with her,

and thank you so much for your time and for listening to me.

New trans-China freight railway opens, directly linking S. Korea and Europe - Duration: 1:37.

A new freight railway line opened this week,... linking South Korean cities to Europe.

The new train goes directly across mainland China.

This means it's a lot faster than the current trans-Siberian or trans-Mongolian railways

that also link Korea and Europe.

Park Ji-won has more.

A new trans-China freight railway service has been launched,... directly linking South

Korea to European destinations.

According to Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport,...

Hyundai Merchant Marine Corporation,... in partnership with SJ Logistics Group,... concluded

the necessary contracts in November,... and began taking orders earlier this month.

The new freight railway uses TCR, or Trans-China Railway,... which directly passes through

mainland China.

This marks the first time for a Korean freight railway service to use TCR.

So far, TSR, or Trans-Siberian Railway, or TMR, Trans-Mongolian Railway,... have been

used to link South Korea and Europe.

The TSR service usually takes around a month,... to deliver cargo from Korea to Europe,...

but the new Trans-China Railway route is expected to cut that time by around a week-and-a-half.

Quoting unnamed government officials, Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency reports that the route

is not yet price competitive, but efforts are ongoing to bring costs down through further

negotiations with local Chinese governments.

North Korea holds munitions conference to laud success of latest missile test - Duration: 1:46.

North Korea held a special military conference in Pyongyang on Monday to celebrate the launch

of its latest missile, the most powerful to date.

An official from the regime declared that it is now a 'powerful nuclear state' and will

continue building up its nuclear arsenal.

Kwon Jang-ho has the details.

North Korean state media announced that the 8th "Conference of Munitions Industry" opened

on Monday.

It's said to have brought together party leaders, scientists and technicians in the field of

defense science, as well as the contributors toward the Hwasong-15 ICBM, the regime's most

powerful ballistic missile to date, which was test fired just two weeks ago.

The state media report said the conference was held in order to review the achievements

and experience gained, and concluded that the regime had entered a, quote, "fresh heyday

of its development" under the leadership of Kim.

With the success of the Hwasong-15 and the allegedly successful H-bomb tests, a senior

official declared that North Korea was now a powerful nuclear state.

He added that the successes "hasten the final victory in the showdown with the U.S." but

that North Korea needs to continue strengthening its nuclear arsenal.

Leader Kim Jong-un was said to have been in attendance but the report did not say whether

he spoke.

However, according to the state media report, the conference is ongoing, leading to speculation

that it could carry on for several days, with remarks from Kim coming later.

Despite Pyongyang saying it was the eighth munitions industry conference, there have

not been any previous records of such an event.

Kim's father and grandfather, the regime's previous leaders, had traditionally kept details

of the munitions industry more confidential, but the younger Kim has been keen to promote

its success both within and outside the regime.

President Moon says restoring trust with China is main objective of upcoming state visit - Duration: 2:18.

Let's start with President Moon Jae-in's highly

anticipated state-visit to China.

Ahead of his trip,...

President Moon sat down with China's state-run broadcaster CCTV... for an interview that

aired on Monday night.

The South Korean leader discussed THAAD, North Korea, and restoring trust with China.

Our Blue House correspondent Hwang Hojun reports.

Restoring bilateral trust.

That's what President Moon Jae-in's interview with CCTV could be boiled down to.

He stressed that trust is the objective of his third bilateral summit with his Chinese

counterpart since taking office, even citing a Chinese proverb; "First time a stranger,

next an acquaintance , a third time a life-long friend."

During a sit-down interview that took place before President Moon's state visit to China,

the Chinese state-run media didn't shy away from asking President Moon about the sensitive

issue of South Korea's deployment of the THAAD system on the Korean Peninsula.

(KOREAN) "I believe joint efforts are needed to solve

the THAAD issue, but in the meantime, it should not be an issue hindering bilateral relations

in various fields" ( . ...)

President Moon reemphasized that South Korea's decision to deploy THAAD is inevitable due

to the need to defend the country from Pyongyang's nuclear and missile provocations.

While recognizing China's concern that THAAD might violate China's security interests,

he made assurances that Seoul will make sure that the U.S. missile defense system doesn't

go beyond its intended goal, stressing that the U.S. is ultimately on the same page.

The two countries reached an agreement in late October to set aside their differences.

President Moon also asserted that Pyongyang must give up its nuclear ambitions.

He said it is delusional for North Korea,... a small country with an economy that is lagging

behind,... to think it can protect its security only with nuclear weapons and that only peace

and cooperation between the two Koreas that can guarantee North Korea's security.

Moon's trip to China comes two weeks after Pyongyang launched an apparent intercontinental

ballistic missile on November 29th, resuming its missile provocations after a 75-day hiatus.

Increased activity spotted at North Korea's nuclear test site - Duration: 0:44.

An increase in activity has been detected at North Korea's nuclear test site,... which

could indicate a possible nuclear test in the near future.

38 North, a U.S. research institute on North Korea, reported Monday that recent satellite

imagery indicates tunnel work taking place on the west portal of the regime's Punggye-ri

test site,... one of the several nuclear test portals at the site.

The website added that routine movements of vehicles and personnel have been detected,

as well as mining carts carrying material out of the tunnels.

Experts say that these activities suggest that tunnel excavation is well underway, indicating

a potential future nuclear test.
