New trans-China freight railway opens, directly linking S. Korea and Europe - Duration: 1:37.

A new freight railway line opened this week,... linking South Korean cities to Europe.

The new train goes directly across mainland China.

This means it's a lot faster than the current trans-Siberian or trans-Mongolian railways

that also link Korea and Europe.

Park Ji-won has more.

A new trans-China freight railway service has been launched,... directly linking South

Korea to European destinations.

According to Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport,...

Hyundai Merchant Marine Corporation,... in partnership with SJ Logistics Group,... concluded

the necessary contracts in November,... and began taking orders earlier this month.

The new freight railway uses TCR, or Trans-China Railway,... which directly passes through

mainland China.

This marks the first time for a Korean freight railway service to use TCR.

So far, TSR, or Trans-Siberian Railway, or TMR, Trans-Mongolian Railway,... have been

used to link South Korea and Europe.

The TSR service usually takes around a month,... to deliver cargo from Korea to Europe,...

but the new Trans-China Railway route is expected to cut that time by around a week-and-a-half.

Quoting unnamed government officials, Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency reports that the route

is not yet price competitive, but efforts are ongoing to bring costs down through further

negotiations with local Chinese governments.

North Korea holds munitions conference to laud success of latest missile test - Duration: 1:46.

North Korea held a special military conference in Pyongyang on Monday to celebrate the launch

of its latest missile, the most powerful to date.

An official from the regime declared that it is now a 'powerful nuclear state' and will

continue building up its nuclear arsenal.

Kwon Jang-ho has the details.

North Korean state media announced that the 8th "Conference of Munitions Industry" opened

on Monday.

It's said to have brought together party leaders, scientists and technicians in the field of

defense science, as well as the contributors toward the Hwasong-15 ICBM, the regime's most

powerful ballistic missile to date, which was test fired just two weeks ago.

The state media report said the conference was held in order to review the achievements

and experience gained, and concluded that the regime had entered a, quote, "fresh heyday

of its development" under the leadership of Kim.

With the success of the Hwasong-15 and the allegedly successful H-bomb tests, a senior

official declared that North Korea was now a powerful nuclear state.

He added that the successes "hasten the final victory in the showdown with the U.S." but

that North Korea needs to continue strengthening its nuclear arsenal.

Leader Kim Jong-un was said to have been in attendance but the report did not say whether

he spoke.

However, according to the state media report, the conference is ongoing, leading to speculation

that it could carry on for several days, with remarks from Kim coming later.

Despite Pyongyang saying it was the eighth munitions industry conference, there have

not been any previous records of such an event.

Kim's father and grandfather, the regime's previous leaders, had traditionally kept details

of the munitions industry more confidential, but the younger Kim has been keen to promote

its success both within and outside the regime.

President Moon says restoring trust with China is main objective of upcoming state visit - Duration: 2:18.

Let's start with President Moon Jae-in's highly

anticipated state-visit to China.

Ahead of his trip,...

President Moon sat down with China's state-run broadcaster CCTV... for an interview that

aired on Monday night.

The South Korean leader discussed THAAD, North Korea, and restoring trust with China.

Our Blue House correspondent Hwang Hojun reports.

Restoring bilateral trust.

That's what President Moon Jae-in's interview with CCTV could be boiled down to.

He stressed that trust is the objective of his third bilateral summit with his Chinese

counterpart since taking office, even citing a Chinese proverb; "First time a stranger,

next an acquaintance , a third time a life-long friend."

During a sit-down interview that took place before President Moon's state visit to China,

the Chinese state-run media didn't shy away from asking President Moon about the sensitive

issue of South Korea's deployment of the THAAD system on the Korean Peninsula.

(KOREAN) "I believe joint efforts are needed to solve

the THAAD issue, but in the meantime, it should not be an issue hindering bilateral relations

in various fields" ( . ...)

President Moon reemphasized that South Korea's decision to deploy THAAD is inevitable due

to the need to defend the country from Pyongyang's nuclear and missile provocations.

While recognizing China's concern that THAAD might violate China's security interests,

he made assurances that Seoul will make sure that the U.S. missile defense system doesn't

go beyond its intended goal, stressing that the U.S. is ultimately on the same page.

The two countries reached an agreement in late October to set aside their differences.

President Moon also asserted that Pyongyang must give up its nuclear ambitions.

He said it is delusional for North Korea,... a small country with an economy that is lagging

behind,... to think it can protect its security only with nuclear weapons and that only peace

and cooperation between the two Koreas that can guarantee North Korea's security.

Moon's trip to China comes two weeks after Pyongyang launched an apparent intercontinental

ballistic missile on November 29th, resuming its missile provocations after a 75-day hiatus.

Increased activity spotted at North Korea's nuclear test site - Duration: 0:44.

An increase in activity has been detected at North Korea's nuclear test site,... which

could indicate a possible nuclear test in the near future.

38 North, a U.S. research institute on North Korea, reported Monday that recent satellite

imagery indicates tunnel work taking place on the west portal of the regime's Punggye-ri

test site,... one of the several nuclear test portals at the site.

The website added that routine movements of vehicles and personnel have been detected,

as well as mining carts carrying material out of the tunnels.

Experts say that these activities suggest that tunnel excavation is well underway, indicating

a potential future nuclear test.

'Attempted terrorist attack' rocks New York's Port Authority Bus Terminal - Duration: 2:10.

A man wearing a homemade pipe bomb has set off a device in New York's main bus terminal,

injuring three people.

Officials have called the incident an attempted terrorist attack.

Ro Aram has the details.

Police have detained a man, identified as 27-year-old Akayed Ullah, for setting off

a homemade pipe bomb on Monday that was strapped to his body.

The Bangladeshi man injured three commuters in New York's busy Port Authority Bus Terminal

near Times Square.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio called it an attempted terrorist attack and expressed relief

that it did not result in any serious harm.

(English) - 4130206 / 2 "And let's be also clear this was an attempted

terrorist attack.

Thank God, the perpetrator did not achieve his ultimate goals.

Thank God our first responders were there so quickly to address the situation and to

make sure people were safe.

Thank God, the only injuries as we know at this point were minor."

In the end, the only serious wounds were to the suspect, who suffered burns and lacerations.

Law enforcement officials said Ullah was inspired by the Islamic State group, but apparently

did not have any direct contact with the group and probably acted alone.

They said the explosive used was an improvised low-tech device, adding they do not believe

the attack was part of a bigger plan, but an isolated incident.

Ullah is known to live in Brooklyn with his family and held a Taxi & Limousine Commission

license, valid from 2012 to 2015.

U.S. media are reporting that he told law enforcement officials that he carried out

the attack because of recent Israeli actions in Gaza.

In Washington, President Trump said the explosion highlighted the need to change immigration

policies, including the type of family-based visa Ullah obtained to come to the U.S. in

2011.

Women detail sexual misconduct allegations against Trump - Duration: 2:08.

The #MeToo movement, which forced three members of the U.S. Congress to resign in the last

week, …has turned its spotlight on President Trump and his alleged past conduct.

Women who say they were harassed by Trump are calling for a congressional investigation.

The White House strongly denies the claims.

Park Se-young with more.

Inspired by the #MeToo movement, which empowered women to name their sexual abusers, three

women who have previously accused President Trump of sexual harassment have reiterated

their claims.

(English) "About twelve years ago as a young receptionist

in Trump Tower I was forcibly kissed by Mr. Trump during our first introduction.

Mr. Trump repeatedly kissed my cheeks and ultimately my lips…"

They're just three among at least 16 women who have accused Trump of sexual misconduct

since he first launched his presidential campaign.

Now, they're calling on Congress to open an investigation.

(English) "They've investigated other Congress members

so I think it only stands fair that he be investigated as well."

Accusations of sexual assault and harassment have jeopardized the careers of many U.S.

lawmakers, including three members of Congress who resigned last week.

The White House again denied such claims, adding that voters dismissed them when they

elected Trump.

(English) "Look, the President has addressed these accusations

directly and denied all of these allegations, and this took place long before he was elected

to be president and the people of this country had a decisive election…"

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said women who accuse someone of sexual misconduct

need to be heard, even if it involves the president.

(English) "Well, the same thing is women who accuse

anyone should be heard.

They should be heard and they should be dealt with."

Following the women's TV appearance, a handful of Democratic senators are calling on President

Trump to resign.

UN Security Council passes formal resolution on North Korea's human rights abuses - Duration: 2:22.

The UN Security Council has condemned North Korea for its ongoing human rights violations

for a fourth consecutive year.

The meeting went ahead on Monday despite strong opposition from Pyongyang's long-time traditional

ally, China.

Park Soyun reports.

The UN Security Council has adopted North Korea's human rights violations as a formal

resolution and discussed ways to improve the matter at its fourth annual meeting on the

regime's human rights abuses.

The meeting was convened at the request of countries such as the United States, Britain,

France and Japan.

North Korea's overall infringement of human rights were pointed out, as well as issues

regarding political prisoner camps, overseas labor workers, the repatriation of North Korean

defectors as well as South Korean and Korean American detainees.

UN human rights chief Zeid Raad Al Hussein asked the Security Council to examine the

impact sanctions may have on human rights conditions in North Korea and said measures

need to be taken "to minimize their adverse humanitarian consequences."

Ahead of the meeting,...

China expressed its opposition to the move,... saying it's inappropriate for the council

to handle the human rights issue of an individual country.

Beijing's UN representative also said the meeting may further escalate tensions on the

Korean peninsula.

With the meeting going ahead,... the 15-member Security Council formally adopted the North

Korean human rights violations issue through a procedural vote.

Ten countries voted in favor while China, Russia and Bolivia voted against.

Egypt and Ethiopia abstained.

The permanent members of the Security Council may not wield their veto... and the agenda

can be discussed if at least nine countries vote in favor.

"The systematic human rights violations and abuses of the North Korean government are

more than the cause of its people's suffering.

They are a means to a single end: Keeping the Kim Jong-un regime in power."

The UN Security Council reiterated that North Korea is failing to abide by international

law in spite of increasing global pressure.

The members also expressed their hope to improve the cruel and merciless conditions North Koreans

have to endure under the Kim Jong-un regime.

Korea's humanoid robot 'HUBO' joins PyeongChang Olympic torch relay - Duration: 2:23.

With less than 60 days to the start of the PyeongChang Games... the Olympic Torch relay

continues in Korea despite the freezing temperatures.

One of the latest runners to carry the flame isn't concerned about the cold though.

That's because he's Hubo the robot from Korea's science and technology university.

Lee Ji-won reports from Daejeon.

From Jeju's haenyeo, or women divers, to Korea's legendary warship, the Turtle Ship,... the

Olympic torch has been carried around the country by some unique means.

And in Daejeon, robots joined the relay.

On the 41st day of the Olympic Torch Relay, the humanoid robot HUBO and a team of robotics

scientists kicked off the third theme of the torch relay, Information Technology, at the

country's technology research hub, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology

in the western city of Daejeon on Monday.

HUBO won the DARPA Robotics Challenge in 2015, and during Monday's relay, it re-enacted one

of its award winning moves.

Demonstrating its ability to use tools,... the robot broke through a wall and handed

over the Olympic flame to its developer Professor Oh Jun-ho.

The professor said Monday's relay was a chance to show the unlimited possibilities of robots.

(Korean) "Through the robots' participation in the

Olympic Torch relay, we were able to show the world how far Korea's robotics industry

has developed, and show people the different ways that robots could be used in the near

future."

The KAIST section of the torch relay also included Professor Oh's next generation riding

robot, FX-2,... and Professor Dennis Hong, one of the top young robotics scientists shaking

up the industry in the U.S.

After its quick tour of KAIST, the Olympic torch was then carried around Daejeon before

arriving at the Expo Park, where a closing ceremony for the Olympic torch in Daejeon

was held.

Monday marked the third and final day at Daejeon,... where some 530 torch bearers participated

in the relay, including Park Chan-ho, Korea's first Major League Baseball player.

(Standup) "After a day off on Tuesday, the torch will

come up north,... and continue its relay in Sejong city for two days, visiting places

including the Sejong Government Complex."

Lee Ji-won, Arirang News, Daejeon.
