HEP!
What? WHAT? - It's not moving at all.
This is already hard enough.
Trying it out I realized how hard this actually is.
This looks beautiful!
Nice one.
Hello everyone!
I am Cathy Cat from Ask Japanese.
I am Natsuko Asou from Japan in Motion, call me Natchan.
Today we've come to Koenji station.
Here in Koenji I would like you, Cathy to experience the Japanese WA spirit.
The Japanese culture of WA! OK let's go.
Today's topic is WA, the true Japanese spirit.
So most people know Japanese use straw mats in their houses.
However, there is much more to that tradition,
and there are a few facts you should know before you come to Japan.
Therefore we came to a place that is making handmade Tatami straw mats
for over 80 years!
Here we are. - Let's dive into the Japanese spirit.
Let's head inside. It already smells really good.
The scent of Tatami mats is heavy here.
Let's go.
Hello! Sorry for disturbing you while you are working.
I see you are currently stitching this mat together.
Check it out! The needles are huge!
You have to totally stab it with all your force.
- Wanna try? - Can I? Please!
I don't think you will be able to get it through though.
- Lies! - Are you sure?
I don't think that's too hard to do. We decided to give stitching a go ourselves.
HURGH!
What? WHAT? - It's not moving at all.
It's not moving at all... whatsoever...
It hasn't moved an inch. It's not working at all.
Sorry. Thanks for letting us try.
Doesn't that mean you are a super muscle man, being able to do this?
Just have a look how he did that!
And you have to repeat that process several times?
Yes uncountable times.
All the years I have lived in Japan, I have actually never seen the inside
of a tatami mat. You might not. Mr Takeda offered to let us have a peep.
That'S the straw that I line up lengthwise and crosswise.
You do it several times to get Tatami mats out of them.
How is it? Looking at it, how is it to see the inside?
I had absolutely no clue. I thought they were made of bamboo strings...
Bamboo? - Yes that was my initial image.
Is it rewarding to make Tatami mats?
It might sound big, but it's supporting an important part of Japanese culture
I think so.
Japanese traditions like making Tatami mats are getting
fewer and fewer and there are actually only a few tatami
professionals left in Japan nowadays.
He said he is proud that he is keeping up his Japanese profession.
I found the touch and the smell of Tatami mats is one of those
really unique Japan experiences.
So now it's out turn!
We will try and make a Tatami coaster today.
Let's create something cute today!
Let's see if we can make our own tatami coasters
They're a little bit thinner so it's easier to sew them.
Natchan, are you feeling the Japanese WA spirit right now? - I am!
I put the needle through the thin part, right?
That in itself is hard enough. It makes me realize how hard it is.
Ta-DA! I am done!
It's super cute. - Yes it is! Kinda old-school.
Left and right looks different.
This is the result.
Looking nice.
And that's my coaster. I love red.
Now I have some take away WA
Well done. - Thank you so much!
Now for a quick break before I take you to my favorite cafe in Tokyo.
As Ask Japanese we hit the streets of Tokyo and asked people about
what item they connect to the Japanese spirit of WA
And guess what item came up most?
Tatami mats.
Is that you WA space then?
Yes. I like the natural smell of the straw.
I feel the spirit of Japan more when I sleep in a futon instead of a bed.
Putting out a futon on the floor or on a tatami mat, is there a difference?
Normal floor is hard.
But Tatami mats are somewhat softer.
I like tatami mats. - What do you like about them?
I like the smell of Tatami Mats.
It reminds me of my Grandma's house. It's a smell that makes me feel calm.
Do you have tatami mats in your house? - The second floor of my parent's house.
What's so great about tatami.
You can feel Japan when you are there.
Drinking the tea that my grandma makes for me there...
and then having Japanese sweets with it.
So you are bringing WA things into the tatami mat room.
And I enjoy them there.
Dango sweets are super Japanese too.
I think that's great.
In my house there is no tatami room but at my grandparent's house.
It's pretty much all tatami.
He also has a cat, so I play with it there.
Perfect! Thank you!
Switch back to Natchan and Cathy Cat.
We wanted to put our brand new, fresh smelling Tatami coasters to use.
That was a lot of fun! - Sure it was.
Next place is an old school Japanese house.
They refurbished it and turned it into a super cute Cafe.
It's an old house and you can really feel the WA spirit there.
You can also feel a new atmosphere there too.
It's the best of both worlds.
Where is it?
This is my favorite cafe in Tokyo called Hattifnatt.
I love this place. I celebrated my birthday here
and I come here usually with friends because the food
and the dishes are so good!
It's located in a 50 years old house
that has been renovated and turned into a cute cafe.
That's a steep stairway.
And once we are on top ...
It looks like someone's house right. - How fancy.
The whole architecture is still made out of old wood.
The door is small too, as people in the old days were small too.
The door is so low.
And when you go into this room...
Have a look at this. - Oh it's directly on the wall.
Isn't is super cute?
The choice of colors is cute too.
Isn't the interior super cute. It's as if you suddenly become part of a picture book
Even though it's a Japanese building, it has a European touch to it too.
Perfect place to unwind and relax. There is also special seating under the roof.
A matcha milk and caramel latte please.
A crunchy orange chiffon cake.
And raw, baked chocolate.
Please.
We are looking forward to it!
Oh wow!
It's so cute.
That looks so gorgeous!
Hey Cathy, let's do this.
Oh I know what you mean.
This one! Wait that was the wrong side.
Let's put it there like this.
Wow it looks so fancy! - One touch and it looks Japanese.
It's so nice.
It looks good.
It's almost too good to drink.
This is nice.
Super rich and flavorsome.
The caramel latte is super good.
How was today?
I had a lot of fun.
By just making this and adding the cup on top...
It looks pretty.
Totally different.
You put it down and it's like JAPAN!
You get to love tatami mats even more.
Making tatami mats is really a great experience.
It's not just one thing. You can sleep on them, have food,
spend time with your family.
Tatami and Japanese history is really well connected.
That was a study in the Japanese spirit of WA.
I learned a lot more. It was a fun shoot. - Thank you it was fun.
The chocolate, look at it...
Oh wow.
That's so nice.
So crunchy.
Everyone, we will eat now, so see you guys around.
Bye bye!
And that's it today from Natchan and Cathy Cat
in out next episode Cathy Cat has to go solo for a sensual
experience so you are in for a treat
next time when we do another collaboration with Japan in Motion.
What does the Japanese spirit of WA mean to you though?
Leave me a comment and I'll catch you soon. Bye.
