Once upon a time, there lived an old man and an old woman.
The old man was a charcoal burner.
He cut woods, burnt them, sacked them into straw bags, and went to the nearby town to sell them.
The old man, however, got so old these days that he could not work as hard as he could before.
""Oh,dear.
My back has been bent down with age and my eye sight has gotten blurred...
I'm almost fed up with my work.""
On that day
the old man carried the bag of charcoal on his back and started to go tottering down the mountain.
It was such a hot day and he felt very thirsty.
He looked around and found clear water trickling down from the rock sitting on the roadside.
"Thank goodness!" said the old man and drank the water, which was very tasty.
"Oh, it was so good! Somehow I feel as if my back has gotten straight"
The old man believed the water refreshed him so much,
and without thinking deeply he went down the mountain and returned home.
"I'm home"
"Oh, you came home early today...oh my goodness!"
The old woman looked at the old man blinking in amazement.
The man standing before her eyes was no longer the old man,
but the young man at the time of their wedding.
"Unbelievable...Am I dreaming?"
The old man didn't notice he had become young until the old woman told him so.
"I've heard of the Water of Youth. It must have been the very water I drank today!"
The old man told the old woman about the clear cold water trickling down from the rock.
"Oh, I must go to drink such a wonderful water!"
The next morning, the old woman left for the mountain.
The old man was waiting expectantly for the old woman to come back in a young and beautiful figure.
The old woman, however,didn't come home in the afternoon and even at night.
The old man became very worried
and went into the mountain with the villagers to look for her.
Still there was no sign of the old woman.
"Where on earth has she gone?"
"She must have been bewitched by a fox and been taken deep into the mountain."
When everyone was arguing, they heard a cry of a baby in the grass.
"Whaa,whaa!"
The old man got close to it to find a baby in the old woman's clothes.
The baby was crying with her face flushed.
""Oh, what a fool old woman!
She drank and drank the water till she finally became a baby!""
The old man had no choice but to take the baby back home in his arms.
