Hi Everyone!
I got a little work to do to the Subaru STI today.
I think my kid messed up the coilovers somehow.
This is one of the front coilovers.
When I turn the wheel at slow speeds, I hear a noise like...
some noises like that.
It drives me nuts and makes me wonder what he did to the car.
I think I have found the source of the problem.
There is a bearing inside the coilover shock.
I think that dirt and dust has collected in there and making it grind when turning the wheel.
Today I'm gonna take the coilover apart, clean it out and re-grease it.
Hopefully that will correct the problem.
Lets get started...
We start by taking apart the top of the coilover.
This is the first time I have ever done this job.
I say it all the time; If I can do it, so can you!
I have no special skill sets at all!
Here we go!
This 19mm nut on the top needs to come off first.
Many of you may be saying that it's faster to take the entire coilover out of the car first...
But thats a pain in the rear so I am attempting it like this first!
Now I can remove these 3 nuts holding it to the car..
I'm just going to loosen them for now.. not remove them completely yet...
The sway bar is still attached below...
That will need to be unbolted first in order to drop the coilover down.
This is the nut I am referring to on the sway bar.
This needs to come off in order to lower the shock down.
I will remove it now.
Once thats off, I will use a jack to support the suspension from underneath.
Before I let it down further, I will hold the center with an allen wrench and remove the center large nut.
This is how the top plate comes apart.
Inside of here still is the bearing we need to access.
This easily lifts off and...
the bearing resides inside here.
Remove the top cover...
Here is the bearing.
It looks really dirty!
Inside the cover is part of the bearing assembly.
There is another plate at the bottom as well.
Everything inside and out is really dirty.
I have a good feeling this is the cause of the noises I am hearing.
Lets clean all these components up.
I am using CRC brake and engine cleaners.
I'm gonna thoroughly clean inside and out of everything.
These bearing plates too need to be perfectly clean.
The most important part is the bearing itself.
I want to make sure these are 100% dirt and grime free!
There is a lot of dirt inside.
I'm going to use brake cleaner to clean deep inside the bearing.
Brakleen and parts cleaner is a very strong spray and cleans well.
It now looks much better than before.
Its very important to get good grease now packed into this bearing.
This is wheel bearing grease I'm going to use.
I think with fresh grease on these parts, our noises will disappear!
I don't think you want to apply too much grease but a little more is better than less I believe.
Its important to squish the grease deep inside the bearing. Pack it in!
Remember this is the first time I am doing this!
I will take some advice but not too much criticism please! LOL

Now put the top back on.
That sounds nice and smooth!!
No strange noises at all!
Now lets put it all back together.
I also took the time to clean these other parts as well.
I think its best to put it all back together as clean as you can!
The coil is loose so lift it up and give it a nice wipe on the base and around it too.
I will now re-install the bearing assembly we cleaned up.
On top of that goes the top plate.
That sits on top like that.
Using a jack, I will raise the entire suspension up.
I needed a couple pieces of wood to help me!!
Now I will hand tighten the 3 outside nuts.
You must remember to reconnect the sway bar.
Once this is tightened and the top is tight, we should be just about done.
I will now tighten the 3 nuts down up here.
We still need to tighten down the center large nut..
I'm gonna use the allen wrench again to hold the center from spinning while I tighten the nut.
This cap/cover just hand tightens on the top.
I will now put the wheels back on the car...
and take it for a drive to check how I did!
Hopefully the noise is gone.
I don't think it can be worse than before...
at least I hope not..
