Welcome to this vlog about contactless payments using your smartphone! My name is Lisa and today I'm going to tell you the ins and outs of mobile wallets.

Contactless payments are very common these days, and are increasingly popular in the Netherlands.

However, people still don't use smartphones very often to make these payments.

In fact, contactless payments with a smartphone work in exactly the same way as with a bank card.

You just hold your smartphone next to a payment terminal, and voilà! You've paid. But how exactly does it work?

You need two things to make contactless payments with your smartphone. To begin with, your phone must have an NFC chip.

This chip communicates with the payment terminal in the same way as a bank card does.

The second thing you need is a mobile wallet: ...

this is an app which allows you to make contactless payments with your smartphone after you've created a mobile debit card.

In the Netherlands, various banks and telecoms companies offer mobile payment apps.

A 'secure element' is essential in safeguarding a transaction with your smartphone.

The secure element contains encrypted information about your card details, and it can be in the handset, the SIM card or the cloud.

To create a mobile wallet you first have to download a mobile payment app.

The next step is to make a mobile payment card, and how you do this depends on the app.

In some cases you have to hold your bank card against the back of your phone, and in other cases you have to enter the information manually.

As soon as you've created your mobile payment card you select the account you want to use for mobile payments, and then choose a PIN code.

When everything has been confirmed, your mobile payment card will be activated and you're ready to go.

And now the moment of truth: paying with a smartphone.
