Waching daily Dec 20 2017

If you're a millennial TV-watcher, Milo Ventimiglia has likely been in your life for almost 20

years.

Having angstily toyed with Rory Gilmore's heart as Jess on Gilmore Girls, now, at age

40, he tugs at everyone's heartstrings as dad Jack on This Is Us.

But there's a lot you may not know about the real-life Ventimiglia, from his early days

as a teen actor to his eating habits and secret tattoos.

Here is the untold truth of this low-key heartthrob.

Losing to Elijah Wood

At age 12, Ventimiglia first auditioned for a movie called Radio Flyer.

He told W that he attended an open casting call with 2,000 other kids, and was still

in the running as they narrowed it down to a group of six.

But Elijah Wood booked the part.

Ventimiglia didn't attend another audition until he was 16.

Party Guest #1

When Ventimiglia was 18, he got cast in his first paying role: a one-liner on Fresh Prince

of Bel-Air.

"Hey relax Ash, we're just takin a little tour."

He says it was a cool opportunity to watch Will Smith, who was already a star, do his

work.

And, of course, he still remembers the theme song.

"In west Philadelphia born and raised, it's the playground where I spent most of my days."

Career goals

Ventimiglia revealed to W in 2017 that he originally wanted to be one of three things

when he grew up.

"I was either gonna be an actor, a naval aviator, or a pediatric surgeon"

"I wanted to help kids, I wanted to fly jets, or I wanted to just be an actor."

Acting won out, when he entered the business at age 18.

Almost marrying his co-star

During the original Gilmore Girls era, co-stars Ventimiglia and Alexis Bledel started a romantic

relationship after meeting on set, and dated for three-and-a-half years.

A few months before their 2006 breakup, Ventimiglia revealed to People that he and Bledel had

at least thought about marriage, saying,

"It's a fun thing for us to talk about, but that's it — it's down the road."

Sadly for Gilmore Girls fans, it didn't work out.

Secret ink

Ventimiglia has multiple tattoos, but you won't spot them in any of his work.

He told The Daily Mail that whenever he plays a character who also has tattoos, he insists

that production cover up the tattoos he has, and put on fake new ones for his character.

Health nut

Ventimiglia told The Daily Mail that he doesn't eat meat, and he never has, revealing,

"I'm a lifelong vegetarian.

That puts me ahead of the game in terms of health."

He's also cut out energy drinks, and gave up alcohol at age 22.

Finding Jack Pearson

Ventimiglia wasn't exactly a shoe-in for Jack on This Is Us.

He explained to Freida Pinto for Variety,

"They wanted somebody completely different.

I walked in with my beard and my long hair and set my motorcycle helmet down and they

went, 'Who is this guy?'"

Ventimiglia then had a real conversation with the producers, and he won the role.

He said,

"I think they just saw something different than someone who had practiced the words.

And they picked me."

Mini Milo

Actress Alyssa Milano co-starred with Ventimiglia in 2008's Pathology, and the pair became friends.

Milano recounted to People how Ventimiglia encouraged her to get together with her now-husband.

Apparently Milano was torn about dating David Bugliari because he worked for the agency

that repped her, but Ventimiglia told her to go for it.

After the pair's first child was born, Milano thought the name Milo suited her son and would,

quote "be a lovely homage to Milo Ventimiglia" for helping her family get together.

Those lips

Ventimiglia's signature feature — that sexy, casual smile — used to be the bane of his

existence when he was first starting out in Hollywood.

While he was born with what he calls "dead nerves" in his lip, he told People that he

was regularly asked to fix his quote "crooked mouth," saying,

"At times, People told me could you stop doing that thing with your mouth where your lip

is going ...hey, I was born that way.

It's who I am, I got a crooked mouth"

Brand Positioning - Duration: 2:09.

Hi entrepreneurs! The other day Ana Laura asked me to talk about

Brand positioning through the "el Vlog del Empdendedor" facebook page.

So you can understand how important brand positioning is

for a brand... it can be the difference between " I need a cellphone" and...

"I need the new iPhone X, and I'd sell my entire family to get it"

Jus to clarify. That last crazy and irrational behaviour is what brands

are looking for when it comes to positioning. So I'm going to show you

the different ways of positioning a brand, the same way we position ourselves

to seduce.

By its own thecnical characteristics.

In that case, if you're more casual or classy. By its beneffits like

"handsome", "stilysh", "funny", "wealthy",... Depending on competition.

meaning if its a leader brand or a "white label". By its quality or pricing. That is, if it

conveys the image of exclusivity or luxury, or if it is more common.

Based on consumer experience. What do they say about you: "irresponsible", "womanizer",...

and finally, by consumer's life style.

If it is a person that lives in luxury, or if it's a regular lifestyle kind of person.

Well Ana Laura, I hope that I've helped you with this vlog.

And so to all of you entrepreneurs. And I don't want to say goodbye before mentioning

the Spotify's playlist I've created... so give it some love.

And you may use it to seduce as well. And as always, if you have any doubts, questions

or suggestions you may wrote it in the comment section below, or write me an

email My name is Adrià Muñoz, and this is

el Vlog del Emprendedor.

Poems for Santa Claus

Everybody left.

A cat is mumbling.

Sleep comes again.

What is NEW YEAR - Two magic words?

And the answer is already ready: This is a coniferous smell,

Silvery moonlight On the fir paws,

Weightless balls With sugar coating

And the flicker of tinsel In half-light it is unsteady.

This is an apple pie And a gift pile.

This is a fabulous threshold, For which - a miracle.

The New Year is knocking on the window, A cat is dozing at the window.

Children decorate the Christmas tree, Mom and Dad are congratulated.

Santa Claus hurries to the kids, And the girls, and the boys

He gives out gifts ...

That's what the New Year means!

The snowflake sat on my nose, Tricky asked the question:

"What a fairytale hero -

A red nose, a sack with a mountain? "

I'm not a small child, I know from the cradle

This simple question!

This is Grandfather Frost!

Trendy Butler Unboxing - Duration: 8:19.

what's going on YouTube I cheated this month I already took a

peek at both of these packages right here I have two months worth of trendy

Butler the past two months I mean one of my favorite companies you're looking at

sixty-five dollars a month two to three items really nice item you know always

good quality you know you could really set your profile up now to where you're

getting stuff that you know that you're gonna like and you'd like to worry about

exchanging or anything like that but I mean let's just get right into these

packages boom so this is my first package right here it looks like they

already folded it together because it's gonna be like you know just an outfit

right here a nice looking bomber jacket but I won't first let you guys know

Santos ten that's gonna save you $10 off your first one so you can try this out

for $55 send it as a gift Christmas is around the corner holidays you might

want to send somebody a nice outfit trendy brother would do the job for you

but let's get into the exact specifics of this I'm actually wearing a nice

t-shirt that I got from Trinity Butler in a previous package a watch game watch

right here MBA edition Rasta clamp bracelet always always got something

going on on my wrist so we got a bomber jacket I like the bomber jacket I like

how it's like a fabric here and they're like a quilt in like with brick with two

on the house I saw like the contrast of the other blacks and then I kind of like

how you have a line in the back so I like how its matched with a dressy shirt

underneath I like that look it's kind of like a casual but let's just unzip it so

this the dress shirt right here is ma shumou moshu ma I got I'm trying to

think I got like a crewneck type of sweater from this brand really good

quality eyewear I've worn it a couple times already so most likely this shirt

is a good quality so here is the dresser but

let's just go into the jacket first so you got cohesive and company I have a

couple days from them always always I'm happy with them

actually got it has a dual zipper I guess that's just a cool look I mean

nobody actually puts the doors are pretty use but you got the dual zipper

but let's let me try this thing on so it's what we have right here I kind of

like the line going down the back cohesive a company I have a pair of

joggers like a khaki pair of joggers that I wear often really like that's

from this brand this first thing oh the next thing matches pretty well with what

I win right now it's actually perfect I mean I like to fit fits good it feels

good I think it probably looks good you probably you know I'm trying it on

already but let's seek out with that so you also have been here you know the

brand cohesive accompany these dots is I it's similar to my actual joggers that I

have with them because they had this pattern on the inside just something

fancy on the inside I guess that brings quality to to the actual I'm gonna put

how much these items actually cost like on the website I know that these items

are always around 50 plus dollars apiece so like I said $55 for the first one

with Santos ten that's gonna give you $10 off but you know good quality so

let's check out that shirt alright so here is the shirt it's like a Chinese or

Japanese and I'm not trying to offend Asia I don't want on offend anybody but

we have 80s so this actually has the price on it I don't know if we zoom it

in focus on that it says $88 for this dresser right here so it has a thicker

feel to it and it looks like this is like this is a type of white you know

dress shirt but that you will wear as like they had it here you know not what

a tie kind of like as the main part of the outfit you know no need for a tie or

not like a plain dress sure because it has these these buttons that really

stand out has like a wooden or like a metal type type feel to them pocket he's

got some like torso I would definitely wear it as an outfit with this jacket

but you already seen how how it came that's exactly what it would look like

and I'm it's gonna fit me because it's a medium so I'm happy with this package

let's take a look at the next pack all right so here we have some colours black

and white for one month and then this one we have some colors and what I do

notice is that both of the items are from Thomas Paine Thomas Paine I've

gotten a couple collar a couple dress shirts from Thomas Paine through trendy

Butler those dress shirts are always $110 a piece and like I said $65 a month

you're getting some good you know retail value in these product in these packages

so let's see exactly what these islands are that's going this as the first one

so we have just like a long-sleeve shirt it's got some detail to it on the collar

like just some extra you know stitching type of look to it as well as the the

back of the arm so it's not just so they try to make it you know it's not just a

plain shirt now there's no retail value but I will leave that retail value or

pop it up on the screen something for you guys so you guys could really see

now I don't know if this is actually a lawsuit yes a long sleeve and then you

also have that same line going through the front as you can see right here so

I'm gonna try this stuff on I'm gonna try this stuff on so you guys can see

how it fits but that is that right there so this is one of the items second item

so for the second item it's also Thomas Paine it's looking like a sweater right

like a hoodie but it's got some some casualness to it it's not just a regular

ol hoodie because it has has these little shoulder the shoulder pad pattern

over here and then you have this type of cuff area right here it kind of looks

like a more of a sweater like a sweatshirt so it has more of a like a

casual look to it and also at the bottom so it's almost like half hoodie half

cardigan type of look so you can probably pull this off with that white

shirt is what but I'm gonna try it both of these items on they do not match and

it's not supposed to but I'm gonna just try them on let you guys see what they

look like alright so this right here this long sleeve this is how

my arms I like the extra detail too I think it really adds although it's not

much it really adds to the look I like it fits good perfect length perfect fit

I'm really happy with this I'm just gonna throw the sweater on top although

like I said it does not match I just want to see how it fits as you guys can

see you know what it looks like it might it feels like it definitely has a car to

give feel to it so I'm gonna call this half honey half cardigan alright so I

think a nice little button-up shirt that matches would be cool underneath it the

sleeves I feel like it's a little bit baggy over here but I do like the

shoulders I like the shoulders on it and it's a zip it up and see exactly what

we're looking at here so you know one side zip it up it's definitely got that

like a little bit baggy cardigan type of feel to it but with the hoodie so it's

like half car to get half hoodie I think it's pretty cool what I normally buy

something like this at the store probably not but that's what I love

about these packages it kind of takes you out of your comfort zone trying

something new you end up liking it so that's two

months right there I'm turning butter guys

Santos ten $10 off

certains is too small might as has been the brains

my new brothers slide and already

Why Do Birds Migrate Like This? - Duration: 2:08.

Hi, this is Emily from MinuteEarth.

Each autumn, tens of billions of birds fly from higher latitudes to the tropics, and

if they went straight - as the crow flies - their trips would be thousands of miles

long.

But instead, they often zig and zag along the way – adding an extra thousand miles

or more to their journeys, which actually helps them get to their destinations faster.

Winds on Earth regularly blow in specific directions, and when birds fly with the wind

at least partially at their backs, they can greatly increase their flying speed compared

with birds flying against the wind.

So even if, say, a swallow has to go out of its way and fly 25% farther to take advantage

of the wind, if it doubles its airspeed velocity by doing so, it can get there in less than

two thirds the time.

On top of this, many migrating birds are land-lubbers at heart.

Small birds generally avoid water because they're too small to survive storms on the

open seas.

Larger birds, on the other hand, stay above land because their wings are big enough compared

to their bodies that they're able to get lift, without flapping, from huge columns of rising

air called thermals, which form from uneven heating of the ground.

A bird in a thermal can simply rise with the hot air and then glide down to the next thermal.

Sticking to land during their long migrations brings birds from all over the world together

at a few key straits and land bridges along their routes.

For a few weeks each year, these hot spots fill with flocks of squawking foreigners,

both in the sky and on the ground below.

This video was sponsored by W.W. Norton and Company, the publisher of the new book "Where

The Animals Go: Tracking Wildlife with Technology in 50 Maps and Graphics", which tells the

stories of animal movements throughout the world.

We LOVED this book, and this higher-than-birds-eye view of Israel's avian and plane traffic

during the Fall migration actually inspired us to make this video.

Justice League Superman Henry Cavil Man Of Steel 2 CONFIRMED?! Brainiac & Supergirl Teaser REVEALED! - Duration: 7:46.

we're talking about a guy but yeah but it's a man room it's about making

interesting young guys we could spend

what it's good YouTube warstu here with a video in the DC extended universe and

Man of Steel 2 if you are new to the channel I do DC Marvel videos all week

long it's like you would have heard in the clip before Henry Cavill has

basically confirmed Man of Steel 2 is in the works and they're just looking for

the right story before they can make the movie which is very interesting we

recently had the newest DC EU slate a lot of people would disappoint because

Man of Steel wasn't on the list everyone wants the Man of Steel 2 movie

it's one of the most anticipated movies out there so it's very interesting at

Ace Comic Con Henry Cavill has been promoting it massively talking about

Superman character so it's so clear that we will be getting another Superman

movie within the next couple of years most likely won't be but what point P

before 2020 out earlier to what I thought so recently there's been a lot

of news in the DC world so director Matthew Vaughn wants to save DC movies

and he's confirmed he's in talks for a few things which is quite interesting so

if you don't know who he is he did a lot of the kind of x-men stuff so he says

this so when I did the x-men there was you know a pretty low bar x-men 3

no offense wasn't was not a fantastic piece of work and once said it's much

more fun as saving Andreea fact reinventing something I've been more

intimate to trying to do a new garden that galaxy for example so he's

basically saying that he likes to work on projects that are failing

although Man of Steel didn't fail it would be kind of interesting to get a

different directors take on the same concept the movie because everyone knows

that originally he was supposed to be directing none of Steel 1 before

obviously Zack Snyder took over DC EU and all that kind of thing so it's very

interesting so in a deed another story during a podcast Mike Matthew Vaughn

also spoke about the possibility of directing a Man of Steel - he said hit

this he and I are massive Superman fans I

mean we worship Richard Donner we love the Christopher Nolan

Christopher Reeve movie he actually fired me up a few months ago and he said

hey listen DC they're very interested in you doing Man of Steel - do you want me

to come in and I was like I'm exclusive to net Victor the few years we can't

even have that conversation and he was like oh man what's the chance of this

and then he kind of drifted away and he's attached himself to a couple of

things and all that you you know so it's one of those things that I might mean if

someone that phones Matthew up and offers him enough money it could change

all tomorrow so it's kind of interesting and then it did go on to say interesting

enough Miller also disguise that he and Vaughn had also pitched a Superman

trilogy back in 2008 five years before - they actually came out so that's kind of

interesting and they said it was actually a massive uplifting hopeful

thing there's no point doing Superman unless you feel good you should walk out

of Superman just feel like a million dollars you should feel great after a

Superman film the movie itself was going to be AB it was going to be big from

epic but Superman got to be a laugh as well so it's very interesting that

someone who is such a massive DC fanboy is really in talks to save the DC EU

even though it doesn't actually need saving it is interesting that a really

decent directors such as Matthew Vaughn is in talks with rumen Lee working on

some other projects obviously he's worked on kick-ass - Fantastic Four I am

pilgrim and then the x-men million movies so I'd be happy if he was to

direct it like personally I think Zack Snyder should direct Man of Steel - but

I know it's nothing happened but the fact that it says he's working

on a bunch of decent movies could imply II could infer that really he could be

directing of the flashpoint movie as well also at the same

vention Ace Comic Con Ezra Miller play another flash also confirmed that the

flashpoint movie is coming a very soon I've always been saying that there's

such a long time so it's very hard to kind of mean wait understand what he

means very soon we had the news that the flashpoint movies coming out in 2019

alongside Shazam and everything but if that is true they're gonna have to start

filming next year because it's 2018 next year and if it's gonna come out at the

end 2019 it's gonna need at least one year in post-production

so what was it interested in in that same interview Henry was asked about who

you would like to fight who would like as villains and he brought a dark side

which was very interested in seeing as we all know darkside was in Zack

Snyder's cut of the Justice League movie and he also bought Brainiac but then he

what I really liked about Henry is he knows him to sees knows his stuff he

brought up a lot of kind of minor characters minor villains and to think

he's a perfect Superman because he knows his stuff he's not being fake he reads

the Superman comics and he always recites pretty big things from the comic

books so I think whatever kind of version on Man of Steel we - we get a

lot of people calling it man of tomorrow I think it would be the perfect time to

introduce Supergirl a Truman Lee she actually was in kind of man is still won

in that part I guess you could say it's Attica Lee so guys who do you want to

tie up - though - and who's you think the villain from Alice still - should be

and also who do you think who do you want to direct the flashpoint movie

anyway guys like I said aside video I do video sites all week long DC Marvel

related so if you want to subscribe that would be awesome

please like subscribe and comment if you would join that notification squad it

down below to join the team I watched you and the warheads notification squad

and we will catch you another video guys very soon catcher and later

Sketchy Things We Ignore About George Lucas - Duration: 4:10.

The success of Star Wars propelled George Lucas from an indie filmmaker to a Hollywood

Titan.

But despite Lucas' reputation as a dominating creative force, his rise to billion dollar

success didn't come without some questionable traits that tend to get pushed under the rug.

For example...

Domestic dark side

In a 2005 interview with Film Freak Central, Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, called

George's ex-wife Marcia Lucas "the warmth and the heart" of the original films, and

cites her influence as what's missing from the prequels.

Marcia was part of the Academy Award-winning editing team responsible for shaping the original

Star Wars trilogy, and famously helped make some big decisions regarding plot and characterization.

But as Michael Kaminski's The Secret History of Star Wars notes, following their ugly divorce

in 1983, Marcia was "practically erased from the history books at Lucasfilm" and became

"the forgotten Lucas."

In a 1997 interview, Marcia says that George rudely dismissed her and her contributions

to the franchise:

"In his mind, I always stayed the stupid Valley girl.

He never felt I had any talent, he never felt I was very smart and he never gave me much

credit."

Underwear in space

Princess Leia's bikini in Return of the Jedi became such an iconic image that it even has

its own Wikipedia page.

But in her final book The Princess Diarist, Fisher said she was always uncomfortable with

Lucas's choice to put her in such a revealing outfit.

"I thought he was kidding and it made me very nervous.

I had to sit very straight because I couldn't have lines on my sides, like little creases.

No creases were allowed, so I had to sit very, very rigid straight."

That wasn't the first time Lucas's wardrobe preferences made Fisher uncomfortable, according

to her memoir Wishful Drinking.

She was only 19 when the first movie was made, and on the first day of filming, Lucas told

the young actress she couldn't wear a bra under her dress.

Why?

According to Lucas:

"There's no underwear in space."

The Phantom minstrelsy

The Phantom Menace was a huge box-office success, but is often cited as a low point in the franchise.

A big reason for that is the inclusion of a few racially insensitive characters, as

Bruce Gottlieb of Slate noted back in 1999:

"Crafty Japanese trade villains aren't the only heavy-handed ethnic stereotype in The

Phantom Menace.

As the story continues, the heroes slip past the evil Japanese to a nearby planet.

There, they attempt to repair their broken spaceship but are stymied by the hook-nosed

owner of the local parts shop – Watto – who also happens to have a thick Yiddish accent!"

Making matters worse is the controversial character Jar Jar Binks, who many perceived

as an unfortunate stereotype of African-Americans.

Lucas dismissed the backlash as a manufactured controversy, saying:

"You can only sell newspapers by creating controversies and making controversies."

Critical intolerance

As criticism about the racial stereotypes in The Phantom Menace continued to grow, Lucas

became increasingly defensive to the point where he began lashing out at critics and

essentially calling them all stupid.

Lucas told Salon in 2000:

"They certainly don't know anything about history; they don't know anything about film.

They don't know anything about politics.

They don't know anything about sociology or psychology or anything.

I mean, it's like, you get into a conversation with them and it's hard to find a subject

that they can actually converse on."

"Slaver" slip-up

Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012 for a whopping $4 billion and sent shockwaves through the

fanbase when they announced a new sequel trilogy.

Behind the scenes, Disney decided to not use Lucas's story outlines for the new movies,

prompting Lucas to use some ill-advised words during an interview with Charlie Rose.

"I loved them, I created them, I'm, um very intimately involved with them, an obviously…"

"And you sold them."

"I sold them to the people that takes these things..."

Lucas later apologized for calling Disney "bad people" in a statement to The Hollywood

Reporter.

"I misspoke and used a very inappropriate analogy, and for that I apologize."

if I'd ride 2 days I'd consider hitting the line

this may look a bit lame but it's cool cause back then you had to ride the fire road

gnarly... that's "le broken"

Winter Games ❄️ The Oven Mitt Challenge ft. Breanna Yde & Sean Ryan Fox | Nick - Duration: 1:26.

- You smell that? - Yeah.

We're cooking up a warm, delicious game of Oven Mitt Challenge.

So what we have to do is untie all three of these shoes,

roll these socks up into a ball and then unwrap one piece of gum

with oven mitts on while racing.

If you want, you can do this at home as well.

3... 2... 1!

[music playing]

Oh, what? This is so difficult!

Ha!

Know what, know what? Uh-huh!

- Guys, don't fret. - Uh-huh.

Okay... Okay...

Ha! I got it, I got it, I got it!

I don't got it.

I'm gonna get this sock in this sock!

I think I got a system going.

This is so hard!

Oh!

Guys, I'm getting somewhere!

Oh no!

Balled pair of socks!

No folding, laundry, who does that?

- That's a ball! - Ah, ha, ha go, go!

Okay, be very delicate here.

Hey!

[laughing]

I got it!

- I ate half of it. - And I won!

And we never burned our hands, the entire time.

- Bam! - Alright, thanks for watching, guys.

Ellen Degeneres: TBD - Too Busy Disorder | HBO - Duration: 5:08.

People are still happy in commercials,

but now, they're concentrated in 30 seconds.

They have to be happy in 30 seconds.

And there's some happy people, too.

That woman in the shampoo commercial?

She's happy. She's... She's too happy.

I fell for it, though. I bought the shampoo. I...

I gotta tell you, I was shampooing for a good...

half-hour and I never got that happy. I...

(AUDIENCE CHEERING)

Finally, I just had to fake it, you know, 'cause...

(LAUGHTER)

...had to get out of the shower.

It's amazing, 30 seconds and we get invested in those characters

on the commercial, you know?

That old man who can eat corn on the cob again?

I'm happy for him.

(LAUGHTER)

He couldn't eat it for a while.

Now, he can.

That woman on jury duty?

(SINGING) "Gotta go, gotta go, gotta go right now.

Gotta go, gotta go, gotta go."

(CHEERING)

She gotta go!

And the judge doesn't understand.

It's such a relief by the end of that commercial.

(SINGING) "And I don't have to go right now."

Oh. Fantastic... lady.

Those jingles are catchy.

We retain that, in 30 seconds we remember all this stuff,

you know, because of the repetition.

I believe that someday sitcoms will be 30 seconds long.

'Cause that's all we'll need,

and that's all our attention span can take,

'cause our attention span is shot, we've all got...

Attention Deficit Disorder, ADD or...

OCD or one of those disorders with three letters,

'cause we don't have the time and patience to pronounce

the entire disorder.

That should be a disorder right there.

TBD, Too Busy Disorder.

What's with the sudden choice of disorders that we've got now?

You know, when I was a kid, we just had crazy people,

that's all. Just crazy people.

(LAUGHTER, APPLAUSE)

All of the commercials on television now

are for antidepressants,

for Prozac or Paxil, and they get you right away.

"Are you sad?"

(LAUGHTER)

"Do you get stress? Do you have anxiety?"

Yes. Yes, I have all those things. I'm alive.

I don't wanna take a pill. Go to Africa.

Go follow some bush man around.

He's getting chased by a lion, that's stress.

Not gonna find a pygmy-on Paxil, I'll tell you that right now.

(LAUGHTER)

Was watching the news the other day,

brought to you by Paxil. Well, now I need it.

Smart advertising. That's another thing too.

When I was a kid, the news was on once a day.

You either caught it or you missed it.

Now, the news is on 24 hours a day, and that's not enough.

They got a guy talking,

and then there's a crawl down there.

So you got that guy talking, you got the crawl going,

you're online, you're putting in your opinion on your poll.

"No, I say to that! No!"

"I said no, too. That's right."

(LAUGHTER)

(APPLAUSE)

And then if you stop paying attention to the crawl,

you go back to that guy for a minute,

then you go back to the crawl

and you catch the end of something.

"Madonna's left foot."

What about Madonna's left foot? What happened?

You waiting for it to come back around again.

It goes to commercial.

"Are you sad? Do you get stressed?"

There should just be one crawl

that goes around over and over again.

"Things are getting worse." That's all we need. You know.

And the local news.

Man, they want you to watch every broadcast they've got.

Don't they?

It's not good enough watching the one you're watching.

They do these teases to get you to watch later on.

They're so incredibly cruel.

"It could be the most deadly thing in the world,

and you may be having it for dinner.

We'll tell you what it is tonight at 11."

(LAUGHTER, APPLAUSE)

Is it peas?

(LAUGHTER)

ThePartIIsan - full (2017, 30min, sub ENG) - Duration: 30:45.

Hi, I am the Public Coz.

We don't know each other, but I have a question for you:

would you mind to become my best enemy?

To be honest,

I just found this number.

I am at a gas station right now.

And the reason why I am sending you

a vocal message is probably because...

[noise]

So this is why I need an enemy,

I am sure you understand.

I don't know if you know

Werner Herzog, the German director..

He made this documentary about his relationship

with his favorite actor, Klaus Kinski.

He was a kind of very crazy guy.

I don't know...

maybe I could play the role of Klaus Kinski

and you may be Herzog..

what do you think?

Werner!

Hi, it's me!

I finally reached Friuli,

which is the region where my grandfather was born

before he moved to Lybia,

which is where my father was born,

before he moved to Genoa,

which is where I was born, before I moved to Brussels,

where you can easily find condoms.

Turuturutù: pissssch!

So, my enemy, let me tell you something.

Werner Herzog had to literally steal his first camera,

because..

yeah, he didn't have one.

And today, with a smartphone,

you don't need an enemy anymore.

I just reached my room for tonight.

It looks very peaceful.

Tomorrow the real adventure begins.

I am really happy to be so close to the mountains.

- it's a nice trail, right?

- Gorgeous.

We're getting close, we're getting close.

We're in the car right now

and we're going to reach the starting point soon.

- You see?

Every stage has a different color.

Little horse!

Good morning little horse!

I think at the beginning we'll have

to be waiting a bit.

And then we'll start getting higher and higher.

Oh man, this is awesome, reaaaally awesome.

Man, I am not sure about the internet connection here..

can you hear me?!

I want to talk about being a freelancer.

What it means to me.

What it means in general and

in this particular historical period.

Man, are you following me?

I am not sure you are following me because..

you know I don't like to follow people either,

so I don't expect people to do differently.

But, yeah, so far so good.

This place is amazing:

we just started!

Over here, on the mountains, you understand

you really don't need an enemy.

What you need is a friend,

because it can be so dangerous.

As a solution...

something that is done...

...something that is the end

of what started one year ago...

But over there,

we all seem to need an enemy,

so desperately.

And...

..maybe we do!

Man, you will not believe it,

you will not believe it!

We just reached a place, which is awesome!

It's a lake, but it's not any lake.

I feel better,

definitely better...

Man, a heart-shaped lake!

Can you believe it?

Are you watching this?

Are you watching right now?!

I mean, it's a heart.

But it's a lake.

I cannot deny this..

at the same time..

..at the same time, I am still running,

I am still working.

I regard this as a first step

towards a complete healing.

This state of mind is going to change very quickly.

Champions of the world, champions of the world!

Yeah, probably something personal...

..or, let's say..

One, two, three: hey!

It's nice because it looks natural, right?

Yes!

Ready...go!

I am filming as much as I can.

It's not easy, because - you know - the battery..

you're not sure that, at night,

you will be able to recharge it.

But it's just so beautiful..

and every two minutes you want to stop

and film it all.

You want to film it all

because you want it to last.

And then, the interesting part - I believe -

is that once you have recorded some memories,

all life around those images kind of disappear..

and the only thing that counts is

what you have recorded.

15 minutes.

I would take a picture of you with my camera.

There's this inspiration from Herzog.

There's also this idea about

bodies on the mountain...

..kind of free of mind...

..and yeah,

maybe this is the right key...

yeah..

[If a cruel death takes us,

the partisan will take his revenge.

The coward fascist is going to face

an inevitable harsh destiny.]

As long as I keep things that simple..

..I think I should follow this mindless perspective..

Guys, the Carnic Trail!

What are we talking about?!

Mindblowing..

Wildcatting...

The Carnic Trail, stage 3:

today we are walking from the Obstanser See Hütte

to the Porze Hutte.

We'll make it, everything will be alright.

You know, it's crazy:

I am looking at these signs of a war

that killed so many young people like me.

But I cannot feel sad for them,

I just feel alive.

Actually I think they were much younger than me:

that sucks.

Hello??

I am just going to act stupid in front of the camera:

you just pretend it's normal.

No problem.

Guys, do you understand?

The Cavallino mountain,

the Cavallino mountain!!

Ladies and gentleman:

the Cavallino mountain.

...and this is the flower of the partisan

(who died for freedom)

I want us to make an announcement:

we're on top.

And there's still much road to walk.

See you later!

Sensitive people always find a way to express themselves.

Guys, the Palombino!

Palombino!

We made it, man!

We fucking made it!

It's so good,

so good.

But the best thing, you know what it is?

Right next to us, right now, there's a kid,

I don't know...7-8 year old kid.

And he is basically forcing his family

to make this film,

this video with a smartphone

and...

I don't know.

The Carnic Alpes are nice.

This is the end,

my only enemy, the end...

eh eh, I wish you were my only enemy..

well, at least, you were my only enemy

- and the best one -

for these three days of the Carnic Trail,

which, by the way, continues for

at least 100 kilometres

to the border with Slovenia.

It's been three amazing days.

I really needed that

I really needed an enemy,

I really needed someone to know that,

for at least three days of my life,

I have been living in peace..

And now,

I am going back to civilisation,

to daily fights,

to this neverending search of

friends and enemies..

This is what happens

when you leave the mountains.

I am pretty sure there's nothing more

that I could have shot

or been able to think of.

[The wind stops,

the storm calms down

The proud partisan goes back home

raising his red flag

in the end we won

and we are free...

2017 Innovation Day Part 1 - Duration: 50:03.

GOOD MORNING, THANK YOU! IT'S A COOL DAY, BUT WE WANT

TO KEEP THAT WARMTH GOING. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US FOR

INNOVATION DAY. INNOVATION WITH IMPACT. SHOW OF HANDS FIRST, HOW MANY

FOLKS HAVE BEEN TO INNOVATION DAY BEFORE? OK ABOUT A

THIRD OF YOU. OK WELCOME BACK. I WANT TO WLECOME EVERYONE

FROM ACROSS THE DEPARTMENT, PEOPLE FROM THE PUBLIC, AND

OUR FRIENDS FROM SISTER FEDERAL AGENCIES AND OF COURSE THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE

ONLINE VIA LIVE STREAM. WE'VE HAD AN AMAZING RESPONSE

FROM FOLKS, WE HAD 400 PEOPLE REGISTER FOR THE ROOM AND A

NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN JOINING US ONLINE TO BE PART OF

THIS. I WANT TO ENCOURAGE THOSE OF YOU

THAT USE TWITTER TO USE THE HASHTAG HHS INNOVATION DAY.

AS WAY OF INTRODUCTION, I'M SANJAY KOYANI, EXECUTIVE

DIRECTOR FOR INNOVATION IN THE CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICE.

TODAY IS A CELEBRATION. IT'S A CELEBRATION OF HOW WE USE

VALUE BASED INNOVATION TO DELIVER BETTER SERVICES TO THE

PUBLIC WE SERVE. THE STORIES YOU'RE GOING TO HEAR

TODAY, WE'LL BUILD A FOUNDATION, AND WE SINCERELY WANT YOU TO

JOIN US IN BUILDING ON THAT FOUNDATION AS WE GO INTO THE NEW

YEAR. IN TODAY'S TALKS, YOU'LL HEAR

HOW INNOVATION IS EXEMPLIFIED IN OUR WORK AT HHS.

YOU'LL HEAR FROM INNOVATION EXPERTS OUTSIDE OF HHS WHO ARE

CHALLENGING US TO CONSIDER HOW WE DELIVER INNOVATION WITH

MEANINGFUL IMPACT TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC.

YOU'LL ALSO HEAR FROM TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION LEADERSHIP OF THE

WHITE HOUSE, SETTING A VISION AND A POLICY THAT WILL GUIDE US.

BEFORE I BEGIN, I WOULD LIKE TO TALK BRIEFLY ABOUT THE OFFICE OF

THE CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WEREN'T AWARE.

THE CTO IS CHARGED WITH HARNESSING THE POWER OF DATA,

INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY TO CREATE A MORE MODERN AND

EFFECTIVE GOVERNMENT THAT WORKS TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF THE

NATION. OUR APPROACH TO THE CHALLENGE OF

CREATING A CULTURE OF INNOVATION IS TO HELP HHS EMPLOYEES AND

LEADERS SHINE A SPOTLIGHT ON A PROBLEM AND THEN INVITE PEOPLE

FROM OTHER DISCIPLINES AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR TO HELP

CONTRIBUTE THEIR EXPERTISE TO HELP SOLVE IT.

HHS EMPLOYEES ALSO USE OUR PROGRAMS TO TEST AND HELP THEIR

IDEAS IN A FAST PACED ENTREPRENEURIAL ENVIRONMENT.

WE'LL HAVE ROUGHLY 13 TEAMS THAT WILL COME UP HERE AND PRESENT TO

YOU WHAT THEY'VE DONE OVER THE LAST SEVERAL MONTHS.

SO LET'S GET STARTED. I HAVE THE GREAT PLEASURE OF

INTRODUCING OUR CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER, MY BOSS, BRUCE

GREENSTEIN. IN CTO, BRUCE PROVIDES

LEADERSHIP AND DIRECTION TO ENSURE THAT HHS EFFECTIVELY USES

DATA, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF THE

AMERICAN PEOPLE. PRIOR TO CTO, BRUCE HAS HELD A

NUMBER OF ROLES IN BOTH THE PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SECTOR.

HE SERVED AS PRESIDENT OF A STARTUP, QUARTET HEALTH,

SECRETARY OF LOUISIANA'S HEALTH DEPARTMENT, AND THE MANAGING

DIRECTOR OF WORLDWIDE HEALTH AT MICROSOFT.

BRUCE HAS BEEN HERE ROUGHLY EIGHT MONTHS, AND WHEN HE GOT

STARTED, HIS FIRST WORDS TO US WERE, "WHERE CAN WE GO FASTER ON

THE WORK THAT YOU'RE DOING?" HOW CAN WE DO MORE WITH WHAT

WE'VE GOT? AND HOW CAN WE HAVE A GREATER

IMPACT WITH INNOVATION? SO IT'S BEEN A LONG EIGHT MONTHS

SINCE HE STARTED. BUT FOLKS, WITH THAT, LET ME

INTRODUCE MR. BRUCE GREENSTEIN. [APPLAUSE]

>> GOOD MORNING, EVERYONE! ALL RIGHT.

TWO THINGS. ONE IS, I HAVE TO CORRECT THE

HASHTAG FOR TODAY. IT'S HASHTAG HHSINNOVATION, JUST

ONE WORD. SO I GOT SOME SLIDES, I'VE GOT

20 MINUTES, I WANT TO TELL A LITTLE STORY ABOUT INNOVATION

AND I WANT TO ILLUSTRATE WHAT IT IS THAT WE'RE DOING HERE AND THE

CULTURAL CHANGE WE'RE TRYING TO EXTRACT, BUT I ALWAYS LIKE TO

SIZE UP THE AUDIENCE. I'M GOING TO COME AROUND AND ASK

SOME BASIC QUESTIONS. NOT ANYTHING TOO HARD.

FIRST OF ALL, HOW MANY PEOPLE HERE ARE FROM THE GOVERNMENT?

PUT YOUR HANDS DOWN IF YOU'RE -- NO, I DIDN'T FINISH YET -- IF

YOU'RE NOT FROM HHS. SO A COUPLE NOT HHS?

GOOD. SO TELL ME -- ALL RIGHT, HANDS

DOWN NOW. SANJAY ASKED, BUT HOW MANY

PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TO ONE OF THESE BEFORE?

OKAY. SO, CONVERSE, WHO'S NOT BEEN

HERE BEFORE? GOOD.

SO WE HAVE TO LEAVE A FIRST IMPRESSION TO A LOT OF PEOPLE.

THIS IS IMPORTANT. WE WENT ONLINE AND OPENED THE

EVENT UP. WE HAD OVER 400 PEOPLE SIGN UP

VERY QUICKLY AND I HAD TO SHUT IT DOWN TO CREATE A WAITING

LIST. I WAS AFRAID WE WERE GOING TO,

LIKE, CAUSE FIRE MARSHAL TO COME IN AND ALL THIS, AND WE HAD AN

EVENT LAST WEEK THAT WE PACKED THE PLACE AND IT WAS OVERNIGHT,

PEOPLE WERE SLEEPING IN THE HALLWAY, SO RIGHT NOW WE'RE NOT

ON THE BEST TERMS WITH THE SECURITY PEOPLE BUT IT'S OKAY,

WE BROUGHT IN PIZZA AT NIGHT AND THEN IT WAS GOOD.

BUT I'D LIKE TO FIND OUT WHAT PEOPLE ARE REALLY HOPING TO GET

OUT OF TODAY BECAUSE THIS IS ONE OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY AGENDAS

THAT I'VE SEEN. I ALWAYS USE THE LITMUS TEST FOR

MYSELF WHEN WE PUT AN EVENT TOGETHER, WOULD I STAY THE WHOLE

DAY, WOULD I BE REALLY EXCITED TO GO?

MAYBE EXCEPT FOR ME SPEAKING AND TAKING UP TIME, EVERYONE ELSE ON

THE AGENDA IS AWESOME. SO I WANT TO REALLY UNDERSTAND,

CAN YOU TELL ME ONE THING YOU WANT TO GET OUT OF TODAY?

>> I'M ONE OF THE INNOVATORS. WE WOULD LIKE PEOPLE TO LISTEN

TO OUR TALK LATER AND RESPOND TO OUR ASK.

>> SO THIS IS GREAT. REALLY TODAY IS A CELEBRATION OF

PEOPLE INSIDE OF HHS THAT ARE DOING INCREDIBLY INNOVATIVE

THINGS AND THEN WE GET TO TAKE CREDIT FOR THEM BECAUSE WE HOUSE

THE PROGRAM, BUT REALLY, IT'S ABOUT THOSE PEOPLE.

LET ME GO IN THE BACK AND ASK TWO MORE PEOPLE WHAT WE WANT TO

GET OUT OF TODAY. HOW ABOUT YOU?

>> UM, IN MY OPTIVE, I DON'T THINK WE ARE VERY INNOVATIVE, SO

I'D LIKE TO SEE WHAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE DOING SO I CAN BRING

IT BACK TO OUR OPTIVE. >> COOL.

WE'RE THE PERFECT ORGANIZATION TO PARTNER WITH.

WHO'S NOT FROM THE GOVERNMENT HERE?

ALL RIGHT. YOU'RE CLOSEST.

TELL ME WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING TO GET OUT OF IT.

>> HI. I WORK AT EPA AND HAVE A PUBLIC

HEALTH CAMPAIGN WITH UV INDEX SOCIAL MEDIA, AND I'M INTERESTED

IN COLLABORATION WITH YOU GUYS. >> COOL.

ACTUALLY I'VE HEARD ABOUT THE PROGRAM.

GOOD JOB. WHO'S NOT AT ALL DOT-GOV?

ALL RIGHT. HERE.

I CAN ONLY GO AS FAR AS MY ARMS REACH.

>> I'M A MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC. I DO SOME GOVERNMENT CONTRACTING

AND I WORK IN MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY SO I'M INTERESTED IN

WHAT THE GOVERNMENT IS DOING IN INNOVATION.

>> COOL. WELL, I HOPE THAT YOU'RE BLOWN

AWAY BY WHAT WE'RE DOING HERE TODAY.

ALL RIGHT. SO LET'S GET STARTED.

DO I HAVE A CLICKER OR CAN I JUST GO CLICK?

OKAY. I'LL DO IT MYSELF.

THANKS. ALL RIGHT.

SO LET ME JUST TELL A LITTLE BIT OF A STORY HERE ABOUT HHS.

SO PEOPLE THINK ABOUT HHS FROM THIS HIGH LEVEL, AND THIS IS

EVEN PEOPLE IN GOVERNMENT, I DIDN'T LIST IT IN THE BIO, BUT I

WAS HERE ABOUT MAYBE 10 YEARS AGO TO 15 YEARS AGO AT CMS,

RUNNING SOME THINGS BOTH HERE AND IN BALTIMORE, AND I ALWAYS

HAD THIS IMPRESSION THAT HHS, WHICH IS THE LARGEST -- I THINK

THE LARGEST GOVERNMENT AGENCY ON THE PLANET BY WAY OF SPENDING,

$1.154 TRILLION A YEAR, A LOT OF MONEY NO MATTER HOW YOU STACK IT

UP, BUT THIS IS REALLY A CONFEDERATION.

CONFEDERATION OF SOME OF THE OTHER BIGGEST AGENCIES IN THE

WORLD LIKE FDA AND CDC AND CMS AND NIH, AND MANY OTHERS, AND I

ALWAYS LIKE TO ILLUSTRATE THIS, AT LEAST TO SAY THAT THIS IS

PROBABLY THE SECOND UGLIEST BUILDING IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

AND THIS IS JUST FROM INFORMAL POLLING.

INTERESTINGLY, WHAT PEOPLE TELL ME THE UGLIEST BUILDING IS HUD,

HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT, OF ALL THINGS.

SEEMS SOMEWHAT IRONIC. SO AGAIN, I WANTED TO ILLUSTRATE

THAT. WE HAVE ABOUT 80,000 EMPLOYEES.

AND A NUMBER OF CONTRACTORS THAT I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO CALCULATE

YET BUT IT'S LARGE. AND WHAT WE DO IN THIS

ORGANIZATION, THE OFFICE OF THE CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER THAT'S

BEEN AROUND FOR SEVEN OR EIGHT YEARS OR SO, WE TRY TO DO

TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION AND REPRESENT BIG DATA AND

PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS, AND I'LL GO INTO THAT IN A LITTLE

BIT, BUT IT'S DIFFERENT THAN IT USED TO BE.

THERE ALWAYS USED TO BE THESE LITTLE SPOTS WITHIN THESE

AGENCIES THAT DID SOMETHING ABOUT DATA, DID SOMETHING ABOUT

TECHNOLOGY, AND YOU GET THE FEELING, IT'S PALPABLE, THAT

THAT ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY AND DATA WITHIN THE GOVERNMENT IS GROWING

AND GETTING MORE IMPORTANT AND MORE ACCEPTED.

AND TODAY IS SORT OF A CELEBRATION THAT TECHNOLOGY AND

INNOVATION IS NOT JUST A SIDE SHOW, IT'S REALLY THE CENTER

SHOW, AND THE PEOPLE THAT ARE HERE TODAY THAT ARE GOING TO

TELL YOU ABOUT THE PROJECTS THEY'RE DOING, WE DON'T WANT

THAT TO BE THE EXCEPTION. WE WANT THIS TO BE THE SEED TO

MAKE IT GROW THAT ALL OF OUR AGENCIES ARE DOING INNOVATION.

I SPEAK A LOT AROUND THE COUNTRY AND PEOPLE ASK ME, WELL, YOU

KNOW, YOU'RE IN ADMINISTRATION, WHERE ARE YOU GUYS ON INNOVATION

AND DATA? WHEN I GOT HERE, I DIDN'T REALLY

HAVE ANYBODY TO ASK UNTIL I GOT TO WASHINGTON, D.C.

YOU'LL HEAR FROM SOME GREAT SPEAKERS TODAY FROM THE WHITE

HOUSE, IT WAS VERY CLEAR THAT DATA AND TECHNOLOGY ARE

ABSOLUTELY AT THE CENTER. DOUBLING DOWN ON IT.

IT'S NOT A POLITICAL MATTER, IT'S THE MAJOR ENGINE THAT'S

GOING TO HELP GROW THE ECONOMY, AND IT'S GREAT TO KNOW WITH

INCREDIBLE CONFIDENCE THAT THE WHOLE ADMINISTRATION IS

DEDICATED TO GROWING THE WILL ROLE OF DATA AND TECHNOLOGY

WITHIN GOVERNMENT. SAME THING, OPEN DATA AND OMB,

THEY PLAY A MAJOR ROLE ACROSS ALL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES THIS IS

A PICTURE, THERE'S MAYBE 70, 80 PEOPLE AT THIS MEETING, CHRIS

CHAIRED IT, THERE WERE SOME PEOPLE, MICHAEL WAS AT THE

MEETING, AND SO WERE A NUMBER OF PEOPLE FROM OUR OFFICE AND WE

GOT TO PARTICIPATE AND REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS THAT OMB

WANTS TO HELP PROMOTE ACROSS GOVERNMENT AGENCIES.

AGAIN, VERY GOOD TO KNOW THAT WHAT WE DO MOVING FORWARD, WE

HAVE THE FULL SUPPORT OF THE GOVERNMENT.

WE ALSO RUN SOME TRADITIONAL PROPERTIES, AND HERE'S A CROWD

SOURCING OPPORTUNITY. SO WE RUN HEALTHDATA.GOV.

IT'S A REPOSITORY FOR HEALTH DATA.

WE HAVE -- I THINK IT'S 1554 DATASETS TODAY.

SOME ARE SMALL WITH NINE ENTRIES FROM THE ALASKA HOSPITAL

ASSOCIATION, THERE'S NOT THAT MANY HOSPITALS THERE, REPORTING

ON FINANCIAL DATA FROM MAYBE 2014 TO '15.

THEY TRY TO FIGURE OUT, IS THIS REALLY A RICH DATASET, BUT

THERE'S ALSO CLAIMS DATA AND PANEL SURVEY DATA THAT'S WORTH

LOOKING AT. HERE'S WHAT I DON'T KNOW.

I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO KEEP OUR DATA, IF IT'S A

VALUABLE ASSET, IF THERE ARE DATASETS THAT AS RESEARCHERS,

PEOPLE THAT ARE DEVELOPING POLICY, THAT YOU WANT TO KNOW

ABOUT THIS, BUT IT'S NOT THERE. SO IN THE WEB SITE, THERE ARE

WAYS TO LEAVE SOME FEEDBACK. SO IF THIS IS YOUR THING, GO

INTO IT, CHECK IT OUT, AND GIVE US SOME FEEDBACK, LET US KNOW

WHAT YOU WOULD DO IF YOU WERE RUNNING IT BECAUSE WE WANT TO

MAKE THIS BETTER ALL THE TIME. SO I WANT TO TALK A LITTLE BIT

ABOUT INNOVATION AND US AS REVOLUTIONARIES.

SOUNDS TRITE WHEN I SAY IT OUT LOUD.

I WAS THINKING ABOUT THIS LAST NIGHT.

BUT I'M GOING TO GO BACK TO A BOOK THAT I READ IN GRADUATE

SCHOOL. HAS ANYBODY READ THOMAS KUHN,

STRUCTURE OF SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTIONS?

GOOD. IF PEOPLE HAVEN'T READ IT, YOU

HEARD A VESTIGE OF IT, PARADIGM SHIFT.

POPULAR MBA PHRASE, SORT OF MADE ITS WAY OVER TO THE UNITED

STATES AND I'VE HEARD IT AROUND THE WORLD AS WELL.

FOR WHATEVER REASON, PROBABLY INSOMNIA, I WENT BACK TO READ

THE BOOK A COUPLE YEARS AGO, AND WHAT I GOT OUT OF IT WAS

REFRESHING. IT TALKED ABOUT PARADIGMS NOT

BEING ABLE TO SHIV. THEY DIDN'T SAY THAT, HE DIDN'T

SAY IT, BUT HE IMPLIED IT. SO YOU HAVE THESE DOMINANT

PARADIGM, PARADIGM IS BASICALLY A WAY TO DESCRIBE CERTAIN

PHENOMENA, IT'S THE STRUCTURE ITSELF, AND YOU CAN'T HAVE

SOMETHING THAT EXISTS IN TWO PLACES THAT ARE MUCH DIFFERENT.

THAT WOULD IMPLY PARADIGM SHIFT. THE WORLD IS FLAT TO THE WORLD

IS A SPHERE. IT DOESN'T REALLY SHIFT FROM ONE

TO THE OTHER, ONE OR THE OTHER, PICK IT.

IN MANY CASE, WAIT WE THINK ABOUT THINGS, THESE IDEAS ARE IN

CONFLICT, POTENTIALLY VIOLENT REVOLUTION AGAINST ONE ANOTHER

IN TERMS OF THEMES AND IDEAS, NOT ARMIES TAKING TO THE STREET.

IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT. OLOMAY SAYS WITH GREAT MATHEMATICAL

MODELING, THE EARTH IS AT THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE,

EVERYTHING SPINS AROUND IT. GREAT.

CAPERNICUS COMES AROUND AND SAYS WHOA, YOUR MATH IS REALLY GOOD

BUT THE SUN IS AT THE CENTER. YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS,

THERE WASN'T A SHIFT. WE CAN'T SAY MAYBE BY WEDNESDAY

WE'LL CALL IT MERCURY AND MAYBE WE'LL GET TO YOUR SIDE.

NO, NO. ONE OR THE OTHER, THESE TWO

SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT COMPETE. NOW WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO

WITH WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HERE?

FIRST OF ALL, BE CAREFUL HOW YOU USE PARADIGM SHIFT IN YOUR

EVERYDAY LANGUAGE. THE OTHER IS, WE'RE IN THE

MIDDLE OF THAT REVOLUTION RIGHT NOW.

TODAY'S PARADIGMS, TODAY'S EARTH IS AT THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE

IS GOVERNMENT LIKE THIS. WHOA, SLOW DOWN.

THAT SOUNDS RISKY. WELL, THIS IS HOW WE'VE ALWAYS

DONE IT. JUST -- WE HAVE TO DO THIS FOR

OUR BUDGET, WE HAVE TO SPEND ALL THIS MONEY.

WE DON'T WANT TO MAKE IT LOOK TOO GOOD BECAUSE THAT WAY WE'RE

GOING TO HAVE TO DO IT AT THIS LEVEL EVERY YEAR.

THAT'S NOT ACCEPTABLE. I KNOW, IT IS KIND OF FUNNY,

WHEN YOU SAY THAT OUT LOUD TOO. BUT WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT A LOT

OF WHAT LARGE INSTITUTIONS DO, AND IT'S NOT JUST GOVERNMENT, BY

THE WAY, IT COULD BE IBM OR THE WORLD BANK.

IT'S LARGE INSTITUTIONS BEHAVE IN CERTAIN WAYS.

AND WHAT WE HAVE TO DO IS STOP THAT.

WE HAVE TO PROVE OUT WITH OUR OWN VERSION OF MATHEMATICAL

MODELING BY BEHAVIOR AND RESULTS THAT INNOVATION SHOULD BE HOW WE

PRACTICE OUR TRADE EVERY DAY, THAT WAY WE APPROACH EVERY

PROBLEM IS ABOUT THINKING ABOUT THE USER, THINKING ABOUT

EFFICIENCY, THINKING ABOUT PROGRESS RATHER THAN JUST

THINKING ABOUT THE WAY WE'VE DONE IT BEFORE.

WE HAVE TO THINK ABOUT ASKING OUR LEADERS TO TAKE ON THE RUSK

TO ALLOW US TO EXPERIMENT, TO COME UP WITH THE BETTER WAY.

SO THAT'S REALLY WHAT TODAY IS ALL ABOUT.

IT CELEBRATES INNOVATION AND WHAT WE WANT TO DO IS MOVE IT

FROM BEING THAT EXCEPTION, BEING THE OFFICE OF CHIEF TECHNOLOGY

OFFICER WITH A DOZEN PEOPLE IN 80,000 TO SOMETHING WHERE ALL OF

US HAVE THE ROLE IN INNOVATION AT HHS.

EVERY PROGRAM, EVERY OFFICE, EVERY AGENCY.

AND THE PEOPLE THAT ARE HERE ARE SEEDING THAT RIGHT NOW.

SO WE HAVE 14 IGNITE TEAMS HERE THAT WE AWARDED THIS YEAR, IT

WOULD BE GREAT TO SEE A HUNDRED NEXT YEAR, AND A HUNDRED THAT

WERE THE WINNERS OF A THOUSAND COMPETITORS, AND IT WOULD BE

GREAT TO SEE THAT WE HAVE TO STOP THE PROGRAM BECAUSE EVERY

OFFICE AND EVERY AGENCY IS DOING EVERYTHING THROUGH INNOVATION.

INSTEAD OF DOING IT THE WAY WE DID IT LAST YEAR, 10 YEARS AND

MAYBE 30 YEARS AGO. SO THAT'S WHAT THIS OFFICE IS

ABOUT. LET ME TELL YOU A LITTLE BIT

ABOUT OUR OFFICE, THE OFFICE OF CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER.

THREE GENERAL THEMES. IT'S DATA, IT'S PARTNERSHIP,

PARTNERSHIPS AND INNOVATION. SO THE FIRST ONE IS IN OUR DATA

INSIGHT INSTITUTE, SO OUR CHIEF DATA OFFICER, OUR JOB IS TO

CREATE AN HHS DATA ENTERPRISE STRATEGY.

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT, IT'S SORT OF LIKE, WELL, YOU MEAN YOU

DON'T HAVE ONE TODAY? AND WE DON'T, AND IT'S VERY,

VERY DIFFICULT, WE THOUGHT WE'D JUST KIND OF ROLL IN AND HAVE

EVERYONE PUT THEIR DATA TOGETHER, WE HAVE A COUPLE DATA

USE AGREEMENTS, A NEW GOVERNANCE POLICY AND WE'LL BE OUT THE

DOOR. NOT AT ALL!

WE NEED EVERYONE'S HELP TO DO THIS.

IT'S VERY COMPLEX, IT'S A HEAVY LIFT, IT'S SOMETHING THAT WE

NEED TO DO, AND I'LL EXPLAIN WHAT OUR FIRST STEP WAS, SO SO

FAR, SO GOOD. WE'VE GAINED A LOT OF ATTENTION,

LEADERSHIP IS LOCKED AND LOADED ON THIS, IT'S ONE OF OUR

REIMAGINE INITIATIVES AND WE HAVE THE ATTENTION OF GOVERNMENT

AGENCY, OMB AS WELL, SO THAT'S GOING WELL.

THE NEXT PIECE IS AROUND MARKETS AND PARTNERSHIPS.

I TELL THE STORY, THERE WAS A DAY, AT THE END OF THE DAY WE

WERE SITTING AROUND THE OFFICE GOING OVER WHAT OUR SCHEDULE WAS

FOR THE NEXT DAY, AND I REALIZED THAT THERE WERE THREE

CONGRESSMEN I MET THAT DAY, FORMER CONGRESSMEN, THAT HAD

COME IN WITH COMPANIES TO HAVE MEETINGS.

AND I JUST THOUGHT, WHY IS IT THAT ALL OF THESE BIG COMPANIES

COME IN WITH PEOPLE TO HELP THEM NAVIGATE OUR SYSTEM, IT'S NOT

THAT HARD. WE'VE GOT A WEBSITE.

CALL US AND WE'LL SET UP A MEETING.

BUT IT STRUCK ME THAT WE DON'T SEE STARTUPS IN OUR OFFICE VERY

OFTEN. AND WE'RE COMING BACK FROM A

CONFERENCE, WE'RE ON A PLANE FROM SAN FRANCISCO AREA AND I

SAT NEXT TO TWO KIDS, I'LL CALL THEM -- KIDS STILL IN COLLEGE,

THAT STARTED UP A BIOTECH AND THEY WERE COMING TO

WASHINGTON, D.C. FOR A CONFERENCE TO PRESENT A PAPER,

AND I SAID YOU'VE GOT THIS REALLY COOL THING, ARE YOU

HAVING ANY MEETINGS? THEY WERE LIKE,

WASHINGTON, D.C., I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO GO ABOUT THAT.

SO THE IDEA IS TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO LOWER THE BARRIERS, MAKE OUR

VISION AND INTEREST VERY TRANSPARENT FOR ALL.

WHETHER YOU'RE THE BIGGEST COMPANY OR THE SMALLEST IN YOUR

DORM ROOM. STARTUP, ENTREPRENEUR, DOESN'T

MATTER. WE WANT TO OPEN UP THE DOORS OF

HHS TO GET INNOVATION AS IT'S HAPPENING AND IN EARLY STAGES.

YOU'RE GOING TO HEAR FROM MICHAEL KRATSIOS, ONE OF THE

FAMOUS GUYS IN OUR COUNTRY THAT HAS BEEN IN VENTURE CAPITAL AND

PRIVATE EQUITY. MOST OF THOSE COMPANIES IN MY

PRIVATE EQUITY DAYS, THEY NEVER WENT TO WASHINGTON, D.C. OR

STATE CAPITOLS. THEY STAYED AWAY FROM GOVERNMENT

AS PURCHASERS, OR AS CONSUMERS, AND THEY WENT OUT TO THE PRIVATE

SECTOR. I THINK THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD

HAVE ACCESS TO ALL THE COOLEST TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION RIGHT

AWAY, NOT WAIT 5 TO 7 YEARS UNTIL COMPANIES GROW AND GET

COMMERCIALIZED AND IT'S SORT OF OUT THERE FOR A WHILE.

WE SHOULD GET IT JUST THE SAME. AND THEN THE LAST PIECE IS, PART

OF WHAT WE'RE HERE FOR TODAY, AROUND INNOVATION.

IT'S OUR IDEAL APP. YOU KNOW THAT WE RUN THE IGNITE

ACCELERATOR, WHICH WE'RE HERE TO TALK ABOUT TODAY.

GRADUATES FROM THAT PROGRAM AND OTHER PROGRAMS MAY GET ACCESS TO

FUNDING AND COACHING THROUGH OUR VENTURES PROGRAM.

WE ALSO RUN THE ENTREPRENEUR IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM, WHERE WE GET

PEOPLE THAT OTHERWISE MIGHT NOT BE INTERESTED IN GOVERNMENT, NOT

THEIR CUP OF TEA, DOESN'T PAY THIS WAY, DON'T WANT TO WAIT

SEVEN MONTHS TO GO THROUGH THE HIRING PROCESS, SO WE BRING

PEOPLE IN. WHICH BY THE WAY, WE HAVE A

COUPLE SLOTS OPEN, TALK TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

WE'RE LOOKING FOR SOME REALLY, REALLY BRIGHT PEOPLE THAT MAYBE

WANT TO STAY IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR BUT COULD BE CONVINCED

FOR THE RIGHT POSITION, THE RIGHT PROBLEM TO ATTACK TO COME

IN TO GOVERNMENT. SO THIS IS WHAT WE DO.

I SHOULD ALSO MENTION THE KIDNEY ACCELERATOR, ONE OF THE NEWEST

ADDITIONS TO OUR PORTFOLIO. SO IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT

KIDNEY DIALYSIS, YOU'D KNOW THAT FOR THE LAST 50 TO 60 YEARS,

THERE'S BEEN VIRTUALLY NO NEW INNOVATION IN THAT SPACE.

WE DIALYZE PEOPLE ABOUT THE SAME WAY AS WE DID 50 YEARS AGO.

THE GOVERNMENT, MEDICARE, PAYS FOR NEARLY ALL OF THE KIDNEY

DIALYSIS TREATMENT. THE AMOUNT WE SPEND ON DIALYSIS

IS LARGER THAN THE BUDGETS OF NASA OR THE DEPARTMENT OF

COMMERCE. JUST AN INTERESTING FACT.

SO WHAT WE'VE DONE IS WE'VE GOTTEN TOGETHER WITH THE

AMERICAN NEPHROLOGY SOCIETY, AND INVESTORS, TO SAY WE'LL MAKE IT

CLEAR THAT THIS IS IMPORTANT TO US, AND WE'LL COORDINATE THE

ACTIVITIES BETWEEN FDA AND CMS FOR BOTH DISCOVERY AND APPROVAL

AND PAYMENT POLICY. IF YOU GUYS COME UP WITH BETTER

IDEAS AND SAVE US MONEY. SO WE'RE IN THAT PROCESS NOW.

WE ANNOUNCED IT LAST MONTH AND WE DO THE KICKOFF IN THE FIRST

QUARTER OF NEXT YEAR. IT'S ANOTHER ONE OF THESE THINGS

THAT WE'RE TRYING TO SHAKE UP THE WAY WE DO BUSINESS HERE AND

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE AMERICAN ECONOMY.

SO THEY HAD TO CHOOSE NIGH PICTURE, IT COULD HAVE BEEN

ANYONE THAT SPOKE LAST WEEK. SO WE RAN THE OPIOID SYMPOSIUM

AND CODE-A-THON. IT WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE WAY

WE LAUNCHED OUR ENTERPRISE DATA INITIATIVE, AND WHAT WE FOUND IS

WHEN WE FIRST WENT AROUND TO AGENCIES AND WE SAID, OPEN DATA,

LIBERATE YOUR DATA, ENTERPRISE DATA, EVERYONE CHEERED LIKE,

YEAH, THAT SOUNDS GREAT, THEN WE WENT TO THEM PRIVATELY, WE SAID

OH, WE'D LIKE TO BRING YOUR DATA IN.

OH, NO, NO, NOT MY DATA. IT'S PRIVATE.

GO TO SOMEBODY ELSE. OKAY, SURE.

WE GO TO THE NEXT AGENCY, OH, NO, WE HAVE THESE DATA USE

AGREEMENTS, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. SO WE SAID ALL RIGHT, WE NEED A

NEW STRATEGY. WHEN WE DECIDED WE WERE GOING TO

TRY TO ADDRESS THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC FROM WHAT TOOLS THAT WE

HAD, SMART PEOPLE, TECHNOLOGY, DATA, INNOVATION, WHEN WE WENT

BACK TO THE VERY SAME PEOPLE AND WE SAID, HEY, YOUR DATA, WE

THINK YOU CAN SAVE LIVES WITH YOUR DATA.

PEOPLE SAID, MY DATA, SAVE LIVES?

WELL, I'D LOVE TO DO EVERYTHING I CAN TO HELP OUT.

IT CHANGED THE GAME. SO IN PUTTING TOGETHER THE

OPIOID SYMPOSIUM AND CODE-A-THON, WE BROUGHT IN 51

TEAMS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY FROM THE BIGGEST CORPORATE

GIANTS, WHETHER WE HAD PEOPLE HERE FROM GOOGLE, FACEBOOK,

MICROSOFT, WE HAD UNIVERSITIES LIKE MIT, STANFORD, UNC, YALE.

SO WE HAD AN IMPRESSIVE GROUP AND THEY TURNED OUT REALLY

INTERESTING SOLUTIONS IN 24 HOURS.

THIS PLACE WAS PACKED WITH PEOPLE THAT HADN'T SHOWERED IN

DAYS. IT WAS REALLY IMPRESSIVE.

[LAUGHTER] BUT IT WAS US SHOWING THAT EVEN

IN OUR WORLD, WE DON'T HAVE HALF A BILLION DOLLARS IN GRANT

DOLLARS, WE'RE NOT RUNNING PROGRAMS FOR TREATMENT OR

PHYSICIANS PRESCRIBING PROTOCOL, BUT THIS IS OUR -- CULTURALLY IT

WAS SORT OF AN AWAKENING AND I HAVE A FEELING A LOT OF THE

SOLUTIONS WILL END UP IN COMMUNITIES NEXT YEAR AND WILL

SAVE LIVES. THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE WHEN

PEOPLE WERE TAKING IN THE SYMPOSIUM SPEAKERS, THE PLACE

WAS PACKED, AND THEN WE MADE A LOT OF PROGRESS AGAINST OPIOIDS.

THE LAST THING AS I MENTIONED HERE, WE USED THE IGNITE

ACCELERATOR FOR PEOPLE HERE AND THE VENTURES FUND FOR THOSE THAT

GRADUATE TO THE NEXT LEVEL AND NEED MORE HELP AND SUPPORT.

I MENTIONED THE ENTREPRENEURS PROGRAM AND THE COMPETE, THE

COMPETE ACT IS WHAT WE USED TO DO THE OPIOID SYMPOSIUM AND

CODE-A-THON, THAT ALLOWED US TO GET SPONSORS, SPONSORS RAISED

THEIR OWN MONEY TO MAKE AWARDS. THERE WERE THREE AWARDS OF

$10,000 EACH TO THE WINNING TEAMS, AND IT ALLOWED US TO NOT

TOUCH THE MONEY OR GET INVOLVED WITH IT, BUT PUT ON SOMETHING

THAT LOOKED A LOT LIKE A PRIVATE SECTOR CODE-A-THON AND ENGAGE

COMPANIES AND UNIVERSITY CODERS IN A WAY THAT WE OTHERWISE HAD

SOME FRICTION IN THE SYSTEM BEFORE.

SO, I KIND OF TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT OUR CALL TO

ACTION IS FOR PEOPLE HERE. SO MOST OF THE PEOPLE ARE IN

GOVERNMENT HERE, AND A LARGE MAJORITY ARE AT HHS.

WE DON'T WANT TO YOU KIND OF CRUISE THROUGH ONCE A YEAR,

CHECK OUT SOME SPEAKERS AND THEN GO BACK.

WE WANT YOU TO BE PART OF THIS TIGHT COMMUNITY.

WE'LL GIVE YOU MORE WAYS TO BE IN TOUCH, WHETHER IT'S OUR

WEBSITE AND EMAILS AND TWITTER HANDLES, BUT IT'S REALLY ABOUT

YOU GOING BACK TO THE WORK THAT YOU DO AND NOT BEING QUIET ABOUT

INNOVATION. IT'S ABOUT STANDING UP AND

DEMANDING THAT WE PROGRESS FORWARD AND WE MAKE INNOVATION

PART OF THE DOMINANT CULTURE AT HHS RATHER THAN THE EXCEPTION.

AND LASTLY AS I MENTIONED THESE WAYS TO ENGAGE SMALL COMPANIES

AND ENTREPRENEURS, WE'RE CALLING THEM STARTUP DAYS, WE HAVE 13

CITIES AROUND THE COUNTRY THAT ARE MAPPED OUT THAT WE WANT TO

GO TO. WE HAVE ABOUT THREE IN THE

PIPELINE AND WE'RE KICKING OFF THE FIRST ONE HERE ON

FEBRUARY 5TH, SO I INVITE ALL OF YOU AND I INVITE YOU IF WE'RE

PUT TOGETHER SOME INVITATION CARDS FIGURATIVELY, FREE TO HAND

THEM OUT TO THE BEST AND BRIGHTEST COMPANIES, STARTUPS,

INNOVATOR, ENTREPRENEURS THAT ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW YOU

NAVIGATE GOVERNMENT. WHAT'S IN IT FOR THEM?

HOW TO GET INVOLVED, HOW TO BE PART OF THIS COMMUNITY, WHETHER

IT'S TO LEARN MORE OR TRY TO GET ON A CONTRACT AS A SUBOR TO

COMPETE FOR OPPORTUNITIES THAT HHS HAS.

SO THAT'S HOW WE WANT TO GET PEOPLE INVOLVED THERE.

LASTLY, THIS IS HOW TO ENGAGE US, SO WRITE THIS DOWN, TAKE A

PICTURE OR JUST MEMORIZE IT. IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT TODAY

IS THE BEGINNING OF A LONG RELATIONSHIP TOGETHER.

WHERE WE CAN WORK WITH YOU IN YOUR OFFICE, YOU CAN BE PART OF

THE COMMUNITY HERE, A COUPLE PEOPLE HERE SAID THEY WERE

LOOKING TO COLLABORATE WITH TO SEE WHAT ASSETS WE HAVE IN OUR

OFFICE THAT WE CAN BRING TO YOUR OFFICE AND OUR AGENCY.

THAT'S WHAT WE DO. THAT'S WHAT MAKES OUR JOB

EXCITING, THAT'S WHAT WE LOVE TO DO EVERY DAY, SO I ENCOURAGE YOU

TO REACH OUT AND WE'LL BE HERE ALL DAY, REACH OUT

ELECTRONICALLY OR PERSONALLY TO ASK WHAT OUR NEXT STEPS ARE.

NOW, THAT'S THE END OF MY PRESENTATION, I GET TO INTRODUCE

SOMEBODY -- SORRY, NO QUESTIONS BUT WE'LL TALK AFTERWARDS.

LET MET INTRODUCE THE NEXT PERSON, SOMEBODY I'VE KNOWN FOR

A WHILE SINCE I'VE GOT STARTED HERE IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

MICHAEL KRATSIOS IS THE DEPUTY ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT AND

DEPUTY U.S. CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER AT THE WHITE HOUSE.

SO THAT'S LIKE THE BIG DEAL FOR WHAT I GET TO DO HERE.

MICHAEL ADVISES THE PRESIDENT ON A BROAD RANGE OF TECHNOLOGY

POLICY ISSUE THAT DRIVES THE U.S. TECHNOLOGY PRIORITIES AND

STRATEGIC INITIATIVES. I'D JUST LIKE TO THINK ABOUT IT

AS HE ADVISES THE PRESIDENT ON WAYS TO GROW OUR ECONOMY.

BECAUSE ALMOST EVERY WAY THAT WE THINK ABOUT WITH THE REAL ENGINE

IN OUR ECONOMY, THERE'S AN ELEMENT OF TECHNOLOGY TO IT.

AND IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT. UNDER HIS LEADERSHIP AT THE

WHITE HOUSE OFFICE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY POLICY, IT

ENCOURAGES THE DEVELOPMENT OF EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES.

HE EMPOWERS THE AMERICAN COMPANIES TO COMMERCIALIZE AND

ADOPT NEW TECHNOLOGIES, AND IMPROVES AND EXPANDS ACCESS TO

TOOLS NECESSARY FOR AMERICANS TO SUCCEED IN THE 21ST CENTURY

ECONOMY. PRIOR TO JOINING THE WHITE

HOUSE, MICHAEL WAS A PRINCIPAL AT TL CAPITAL, WHERE HE INVESTED

IN AND ADVISED TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES.

HE'S THE REAL DEAL. HE'S DONE IT ON THE OUTSIDE AND

BRINGING THAT KNOWLEDGE TO THE INSIDE.

HE'S A GRADUATE OF PRINCETON AND SERVED AS A VISITING SCHOLAR AT

A BEJING UNIVERSITY. TWO INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT

MICHAEL. I ASKED ALL THE SPEAKERS TO TELL

ME TWO FUN FACTS. SO FIRST OF ALL, THIS GUY HAS

VISITED 31 COUNTRIES AND SIX CONTINENTS.

THAT'S A LOT, I'VE TRAVELED A LOT BUT THAT'S OFF THE CHARTS A

LOT. MORE IMPORTANTLY, AS A CHILD,

MICHAEL ASPIRED TO BECOME A FAMOUS MAGICIAN BUT HE WENT INTO

EARLY RETIREMENT AT 6 YEARS OLD WHEN HE SHATTERED A PRICELESS

FAMILY HEIRLOOM DURING A TRICK. HE STILL LOVES MAGIC BUT I GUESS

HE'S NOT GOING TO BE DOING ANY OF THAT HERE, BUT THANK YOU,

COME ON UP AND WE'LL DO THE NEXT PRESENTATION.

[APPLAUSE] >> THANK YOU, BRUCE, FOR THAT

VERY GENEROUS AND KIND INTRODUCTION.

I'M SO EXCITED AND DELIGHTED TO BE HERE WITH YOU TO SHARE THE

WAY WE THINK ABOUT SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY POLICY AT THE WHITE

HOUSE. FOR MANY OF YOU WHO DON'T KNOW,

THE OFFICE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY POLICY IS A COMPONENT

WITHIN THE WHITE HOUSE. IT'S ONE OF THE POLICY GROUPS

WHICH HELPS SHAPE THE NATIONAL AGENDA.

SO THERE'S THE NATIONAL ECONOMIC COUNCIL, THERE'S THE DOMESTIC

POLICY COUNCIL, NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL, AND THERE'S

US. SO WITHIN OUR OFFICE, WE THINK

VERY STRATEGICALLY ABOUT HOW WE CAN TAKE THE PRESIDENT'S BROAD

AGENDA TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND DELIVER IT IN TERMS OF

SCIENCE AND TECH. SO HOW DOES THAT LOOK?

SO WE BEGIN OUR ANALYSIS OF HOW WE THINK ABOUT THINGS FROM THE

VERY, VERY TOP LEVEL, FROM FIRST PRINCIPLES ABOUT WHAT OUR

PRESIDENT BELIEVES AND THE AGENDA HE'S TRYING TO PUSH.

THE THREE KEYS PRESIDENT TRUMP HAS BEEN PUSHING ARE FIRST

ECONOMIC GROWTH IN JOBS, SECOND, NATIONAL SECURITY, AND NUMBER

THREE, OUR GOVERNMENT REFORM. SO WITHIN THIS FRAMEWORK, WE

ATTEMPTED TO STILL THAT DOWN TO WHAT OUR SCIENCE AND TECH

PRIORITIES SHOULD BE. I THINK WITH THOSE, YOU CAN SEE

IT FILTERED DOWN ALL THE WAY TO EACH OF THE AGENCIES.

SO I WANT TO SPEND A LITTLE TIME TODAY WALKING YOU THROUGH KIND

OF WHAT OUR PRIORITIES ARE AND HAVE BEEN OVER THE PAST COUPLE

MONTHS, GIVE YOU A FLAVOR OF THE TYPE OF WORK THAT WE DO, AND

SHOW YOU HOW WE'RE TRYING TO DELIVER RESULTS BROADLY TO THE

AMERICAN PEOPLE. SO THE FIRST PRIORITY THAT WE'VE

SORT OF IDENTIFIED AND HAVE DRIVEN PRETTY AGGRESSIVELY OVER

THE PAST EIGHT MONTHS IS A FOCUS ON EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES.

THIS IS THE IDEA THAT FUTURE ECONOMIC GROWTH AND JOBS IN

AMERICA ARE GOING TO BE DRIVEN BY THE NEXT GREAT TECHNOLOGY

COMPANIES. FOR US TO SIT IDLY AND HOPE THAT

CURRENT TECHNOLOGY AND THE CURRENT COMPANIES OF THE DAY ARE

GOING TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE THIS COUNTRY FORWARD, I THINK IS A

BIT SHORT SIGHTED, AND WHAT WE SPECIFICALLY LACK FOR AT THE

WHITE HOUSE ARE WAYS THAT WE CAN SORT OF TAP IN TO THAT

GOVERNMENT REFORM ANGLE THAT PRESIDENT TRUMP ALWAYS PUSH,

WHAT ARE THE BARRIERS FOR OUR GREATEST TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES TO

SUCCEED HERE IN THE U.S. AND BACK IN JUNE, PRESIDENT

TRUMP, ALONG WITH THE OFFICE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY POLICY

HOSTED AN EVENT AT THE WHITE HOUSE CALLED PROMOTING -- CALLED

AMERICAN LEADERSHIP IN EMERGING TECHNOLOGY.

THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO BRING IN STAKEHOLDERS AND INDUSTRY

LEADERS FROM SOME EMERGING TECHNOLOGY FIELDS TO HEAR FROM

THEM DIRECTLY WHAT WERE THE ISSUES THAT THEIR INDUSTRY WAS

FACING. I THINK I WANT TO GIVE YOU A

CASE STUDY OF A COUPLE THINGS WE'VE LOOKED AT SO YOU CAN GET A

SENSE OF THE WAY WE THINK ABOUT ISSUES.

SO ONE THAT WE TACKLED EARLY ON WAS THE QUESTION OF DRONES OR

UNMANNED AERIAL SYSTEMS. AND CURRENTLY THE WAY THAT THE

RULES ARE WRITTEN, COMMERCIAL DRONE OPERATORS ARE NOT ALLOWED

TO FLY OVER PEOPLE BEYOND LINE OF SIGHT OR AT NIGHT.

NOW, WHAT DOES THIS RESULT IN? THIS HAS RESULTED IN SOME OF OUR

GREATEST AMERICAN COMPANIES AND INNOVATORS TAKING THEIR

TECHNOLOGY AND MOVING OVERSEAS. SO GOOGLE IS CURRENTLY TESTING

THEIR PACKAGE DELIVERY OPERATION IN AUSTRALIA.

AMAZON HAS BEEN TESTING IN THE U.K. FOR, I DON'T KNOW, ALMOST

FIVE YEARS NOW. AND WE EVEN HAVE AMERICANS

MOVING TO PLACES LIKE RWANDA TO START COMPANIES LIKE ZIPLINE.

SO THESE EXAMPLES I THINK VERY MUCH RESONATED WITH OUR OFFICE

AND WITH THE WHITE HOUSE MORE BROADLY ABOUT WHAT CAN WE DO TO

ACTUALLY KEEP THAT INNOVATION AL HOME?

I THINK THAT ONE INDUSTRY IS SORT OF THE MICROCHASM OF THE

ISSUES THAT SLOW REGULATORY MOVEMENT ON EMERGING INDUSTRIES

CAN CAUSE. SO AFTER HEARING FROM THE

INDUSTRY ABOUT WHAT THESE ISSUES WERE, WE WENT BACK TO THE

DRAWING BOARD AND WORKED WITH FAA AND DEPARTMENT OF

TRANSPORTATION AND DRAFTED A PRESIDENTIAL MEMORANDUM.

SO LAST MONTH, THE PRESIDENT SIGNED A PRESIDENTIAL MEMORANDUM

INSTRUCTING THE SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION TO CREATE A DRONE

PILOT PROGRAM, AND THIS WAS FOR OUR FIRST OPPORTUNITY TO KIND OF

WIPE THE SLATE CLEAN ON THESE RESTRICTIONS FOR COMMERCIAL

OPERATORS IN SOME SORT OF INNOVATION ZONES, THIS IDEA THAT

A STATE, LOCAL OR TRIBAL GOVERNMENT COULD APPLY TO THE

FAA AND SAY, LOOK, WE WANT TO TEST OUT THESE TECHNOLOGIES, WE

WANT AMAZON TO BE DELIVERING PACKAGES EVERY WEDNESDAY BETWEEN

2:00 AND 4:00 A.M. AND WE'RE GOING TO SEE HOW OUR PEOPLE LIKE

THAT, OR WHETHER IT'S A HOSPITAL THAT'S PARTNERING WITH A TESTING

FACILITY AND THEY CAN MOVE SORT OF BLOOD TEST RESULTS BACK AND

FORTH BY DRONES RATHER THAN CARS OR AMBULANCES.

AND WE -- SO THAT MEMORANDUM WAS SIGNED AND THE SECRETARY WAS

INSTRUCTED TO START THE PROGRAM. THIS WAS AT FAA ABOUT 10 DAYS

AFTER SIGNING OF THE P.M., AND THE PROGRAM WAS LAUNCHED BY

SECRETARY CHAO. WE WERE A LITTLE UNSURE ABOUT

WHAT THE RESPONSE WOULD BE, HOW MANY PEOPLE WOULD BE INTERESTED

IN THIS. WAS THIS SOMETHING ACTUALLY

PEOPLE CARED ABOUT OR ANOTHER SMALL EXAMPLE OF HOW GOVERNMENT

MAY GET IN THE WAY. WE OPENED UP A 20-DAY WINDOW FOR

STATE, LOCAL OR TRIBAL GOVERNMENTS TO LET THE FAA KNOW

THAT, YES, I WOULD LIKE TO APPLY TO THIS PROGRAM.

WHAT WE SAW WAS AN INCREDIBLE TURNOUT.

WE HAD OVER 200 INTERESTED PARTIES, SO I THINK ONCE THOSE

NUMBERS CAME IN, I THINK IT REALLY REAFFIRMED WHAT WE'VE

ALWAYS BEEN THINKING. IT GOES DOWN TO A LOT OF THE

THINGS THAT BRUCE HAS BEEN TALKING ABOUT.

THERE IS A LOT OF PENT-UP DEMAND FOR INNOVATIVE NEXT GENERATION

TYPE TECHNOLOGIES AND ACTIONS BY THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, AND IT'S

OUR RESPONSIBILITY AS THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, AS

REGULATORS, TO OPEN UP OPPORTUNITIES AND ALLOW THESE

PEOPLE TO LET THEIR BEST TECHNOLOGIES SUCCEED AND GROW IN

THE U.S. SO I'M EXCITED TO SAY, AND MANY

OF YOU MAY SEE IN YOUR STATE AND LOCALITIES AROUND THE COUNTRY

THAT BEFORE 2018, THERE WILL BE SOME COMMERCIAL DRONE OPERATIONS

SO WE'RE EXCITED TO SEE THAT PROGRAM GO FORWARD.

THE OTHER THING I WANT TO TALK ABOUT IS ABOUT ENERGY, WHICH

FITS VERY MUCH WITH OUR THEME OF PROMOTING TECHNOLOGY.

WHEN THE PRESIDENT SPOKE DURING ENERGY WEEK IN JUNE AT THE

DEPARTMENT OF, HE DISCUSSED THE IMPORTANCE OF AN ALL OF THE

ABOVE ENERGY APPROACH AND THAT INCLUDES NUCLEAR ENERGY.

NUCLEAR ENERGY IS, BY FAR, PROBABLY THE CLEANEST SOURCE OF

ENERGY IN THE U.S. WHAT'S I THINK BEEN CHALLENGING

WITH IT ARE THE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH IT.

ALTHOUGH THESE PLANTS ULTIMATELY CAN PRODUCE EXTREMELY CHEAP

ENERGY, THERE'S TWO ISSUES. ONE, THEY'RE EXPENSIVE AND TWO,

IT'S EXTRAORDINARILY HARD TO GET THEM APPROVED HERE IN THE U.S.

SO ANOTHER EXAMPLE THAT I THINK RUNS VERY PARALLEL TO WHAT WE

SAW WITH THE DRONE ISSUE WAS THE SAME WITH ENERGY.

SO BILL GATES AFTER RETIRING FROM MICROSOFT HAS BEEN DOING A

NUMBER OF PHILANTHROPIC ENDEAVORS AND ONE OF THE THEM

WAS CREATION OF A COMPANY CALLED TERA POWER, HIS TAKE ON NUCLEAR

ENERGY. HE BROUGHT THE BEST AND

BRIGHTEST NUCLEAR ENGINEERS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY TO JOIN HIM

IN WASHINGTON AND FIGURE OUT WHAT THE NEXT GENERATION NUCLEAR

PLANT COULD BE, HOW CAN WE BETTER SERVE NOT ONLY AMERICANS,

THE ENTIRE WORLD WITH CHEAP, SAFE ENERGY.

DEVELOPED A GREAT PLAN, CAME, ACTUALLY CAME TO WASHINGTON AND

SPOKE AND REQUESTED FROM THE GOVERNMENT, YOU KNOW, HOW

QUICKLY CAN WE GET THIS APPROVED?

CAN WE BUILD THIS PLANT HERE IN THE U.S. OR A TEST REACTOR?

ULTIMATELY THE CHALLENGES WERE SO INTENSE FOR HIM HERE IN

AMERICA THAT HE ENDED UP PARTNERING WITH THE CHINESE TO

BUILD THE FIRST TERAPOWER REACTOR IN CHINA.

WHEN WE HEAR THE STORY, IT'S EXTREMELY DISHEARTENING.

THIS IS ONE OF AMERICA'S GREATEST INNOVATOR, WE ASSEMBLED

THE GREATEST MINDS IN THE WORLD AND HE WANTS TO BRING THE

INNOVATION HERE TO THE U.S., HE'S UNABLE TO DO SO BECAUSE OF

THE RULES BY NRC WHICH MAKE IT SO CHALLENGING FOR HIM TO GET

THAT APPROVAL. SO I THINK AGAIN THIS IS ANOTHER

STORY THAT RESONATED WITH THE PRESIDENT, WITH THE WHITE HOUSE

AND THE PRESIDENT CALLED FOR A FULL CIVIL NUCLEAR REVIEW AND

TRYING TO FIND WAYS TO KIND OF CREATE THOSE PATHWAYS FOR OUR

GREATEST NUCLEAR ENGINEERS TO BE ABLE TO BUILD THESE TECHNOLOGIES

HERE IN THE U.S. SO THAT'S KIND OF HOW WE THINK

ABOUT EMERGING TECH. I CHALLENGE YOU US A THINK ABOUT

WORK YOU'RE DOING IN THE HEALTHCARE SPACE, IF YOU'RE

TRYING TO DO SOMETHING INNOVATIVE, IF YOU SEE WHETHER

IT'S -- YOU TALKED ABOUT SOME OF THE DATA ISSUES, IF YOU'RE

RUNNING INTO SOME OF THESE RULES AND REGS YOU THINK SORT OF

RESTRICT WAIT YOU'RE KIND OF ABLE TO PUSH INNOVATION FORWARD,

THESE ARE THE KINDS OF THINGS WE WANT TO HEAR ABOUT.

IF THERE'S THINGS WE CAN FIX OR CHANGE OR MAKE EASIER FOR YOU,

WE REALLY WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU DON'T GO SOMEWHERE ELSE TO DO

THAT AND YOU DO IT HERE IN THE U.S.

THE SECOND BIG THING THAT WE'RE PUSHING, OUR SECOND KEY THEME IS

PROMOTING OR EMPOWERING AMERICANS TO INNOVATE.

THIS IS CREATING A CULTURE AND AN ENVIRONMENT IN THE U.S. WHERE

OUR GREATEST INNOVATORS CONTINUE TO DO THEIR WORK HERE.

SO WE WORK ON A NUMBER OF TRACKS.

I THINK THE FIRST ONE, WHICH HAS RESONATED A LOT WITHIN THE

ADMINISTRATION IS THE QUESTION OF CONNECTIVITY OR RURAL

BROADBAND. SO SOMETHING LIKE 10% OF

AMERICANS DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO HIGH SPEED INTERNET, SOMETHING

LIKE 43 MILLION AMERICANS OR ABOUT 33 MILLION RURAL AMERICANS

DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO INTERNET, AND -- OR HIGH SPEED, THAT'S 20

MEGABIT DOWN, AND IF YOU COMPARE THAT TO URBAN AREAS, ONLY 4% OF

URBAN AMERICANS DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO HIGH SPEED INTERNET.

SO THE PRESIDENT EARLIER THIS SUMMER SIGNED AN EXECUTIVE ORDER

DIRECTING SECRETARY PURDUE TO PUT TOGETHER A RURAL PROSPERITY

TASK FORCE. INCLUDING EVERYONE FROM HHS TO

OSTP TO FCC TO HUD, THERE WAS A VERY, VERY WIDE RANGE OF FOLKS

WHO CAME TOGETHER TO WRITE THIS REPORT FOR THE PRESIDENT THAT'S

GOING TO BE DELIVERED NEXT MONTH.

SITTING IN THESE MEETINGS, WHAT WAS SO FASCINATING, IF YOU CAME

FROM THE HEALTHCARE SPACE OR THE HOUSING SPACE, THE THEME THAT

KEPT COMING UP WAS THIS ISSUE OF CONNECTIVITY.

IF WE THINK ABOUT IT IN THE HEALTHCARE LENS, WHEN YOU THINK

ABOUT TELEMEDICINE OR HOW YOU PROVIDE HEALTHCARE TO RURAL

AMERICANS, IT'S ABSOLUTELY KEY TO HAVE CONNECTIVITY.

IF YOU'RE UNABLE TO CONNECT TO THEM ON LIVE INTERNET, HOW YOU

ARE GOING TO DO IT? AMERICA HAS BEEN STRUGGLING WITH

THAT FOR NEARLY CENTURIES NOW AND I THINK CONNECTIVITY IS ONE

OF THOSE HUGE KEYS THAT'S GOING TO CHANGE IT.

SO I THINK WHAT YOU'LL BE SEEING NEXT MONTH IS THE RELEASE OF THE

PROSPERITY REPORT AND YOU'LL SEE LOTS OF THEMES AROUND

CONNECTIVITY ISSUES, THAT TIES EVERYTHING FROM HEALTHCARE TO

ESSENTIALLY SORT OF ALLOWING PEOPLE TO GIVE THEM THE TOOLS TO

SUCCEED IN THE 21ST CENTURY ECONOMY, WHETHER IT'S BUILD YOUR

OWN COMPANIES, WHETHER IT'S SELLING PRODUCTS ONLINE,

WHATEVER IT MAY BE. THE SECOND ISSUE WE THINK ABOUT

A LOT IS THE ISSUE OF SPECTRUM IN THE TELECOM SPACE.

THE GOVERNMENT CONTROLS ABOUT 60 OR 70% OF ALL U.S. SPECTRUM.

SPECTRUM IS EXTRAORDINARILY VALUABLE.

YOU JUST LOOK AT THE RECENT SALES THAT HAVE HAPPENED OVER

THE YEARS FOR. SO BANDS, THE GOVERNMENT WILL TAKE IN REVENUE

OF TENS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN ORDER TO SELL THIS STUFF OFF.

WHAT'S ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL IS OUR FIRST RESPONDER, OUR

MILITARY HAVE THE SPECTRUM AND THE BANDS THAT THEY NEED, BUT WE

AS A GOVERNMENT I THINK CAN BE MORE EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE IN

SHARING AND IN UTILIZING THAT SPECTRUM.

FOR ALL OF OUR AGENCIES, TO KIND OF WORK TOGETHER TO BE BETTER

STEWARDS OF THIS EXTREMELY VALUABLE RESOURCE THAT SORT OF

DRIVES THE ECONOMY. SO WE'LL BE SEEING NEXT YEAR

AGAIN A PUSH OR PLAN AROUND HOW WE CAN BETTER UTILIZE THE

SPECTRUM AND BETTER SHARE IT ACROSS AGENCIES.

THE THIRD PIECE WE THINK ABOUT A LOT ON THE EMPOWERING AMERICANS

IS THE QUESTION OF STEM EDUCATION.

THE PRESIDENT MADE A BIG PUSH ON THIS QUESTION OF WORKFORCE, AND

THE IDEA OF SORT OF PREPARING AMERICANS FOR THE JOBS NECESSARY

TO SUCCEED IN TODAY'S ECONOMY. I THINK WHAT'S BEEN VERY

REFRESHING, A NEW TAKE TO THIS PREDICTER WORK FOR QUESTION IS

PUSHING BACK A LITTLE BIT ON THE GENERAL CONCEPT THAT EVERY

AMERICAN -- IT MAKES SENSE FOR EVERY AMERICAN TO GET A

FOUR-YEAR DEGREE. I THINK IT'S A SOMEWHAT SORT OF

PROVOCATIVE STATEMENT IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, AND I THINK

WE'VE BEEN SORT OF -- IT'S BEEN ENGRAINED IN OUR SYSTEM FOR

DECADES NOW THAT EVERY AMERICAN NEEDS TO GET A FOUR-YEAR DEGREE

IN COLLEGE. WE'VE BEEN VERY CLEAR THAT

THAT'S NOT THE ANSWER, FOR MANY AMERICANS, A TECHNICAL DEGREE OR

SPENDING TIME IN A COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO GET TECHNICAL SKILLS

CAN BE EXTRAORDINARILY VALUABLE. THE CONCEPT OF THE IDEA OF

WELDERS, YOU THINK ABOUT WHAT IS THE MEDIAN INCOME FOR AN

AMERICAN FAMILY, YOU'RE LOOKING AT ROUGHLY 52, $53,000, WHAT IS

THE MEDIAN INCOME FOR A WELDER THAT'S GOT 10 A

TECHNICAL DEGREE, YOU'RE LOOKING AT SOMETHING ONE HALF THAT OR

80-PLUS. SO WHY ARE WE NOT ENCOURAGING

AMERICANS TO GET THOSE TECHNICAL SKILLS AND DEGREES THAT CAN

ALLOW THEM TO SORT OF PROVIDE BETTER FOR THEIR FAMILY AND

ALLOW THEM TO GET A MUCH HIGHER INCOME.

THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE'RE WORKING TOWARDS.

IT TIES VERY MUCH TO A LOT OF THE WORK WE'RE DOING ON STEM

EDUCATION FRONT. THE COMPETES ACT THAT BRUCE

TALKED ABOUT ALSO HAS A LOT OF LANGUAGE AROUND THE WAY WE NEED

TO OVERSEE THE STEM EDUCATION PLANS IN OUR COUNTRY, AND THE

OFFICE OF SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE POLICY IS TASKED EVERY

FIVE YEARS TO PRODUCE A FIVE-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN FOR

CONGRESS ON WHAT IS THE VISION OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FOR

STEM EDUCATION, AND YOU'LL BE SEEING THAT COME OUT AROUND THE

SUMMER OF NEXT YEAR AS WE BUILD THE TEAM TO WRITE THAT PLAN.

I THINK WHAT WE'RE GOING TO BE PUSHING A LOT IS THIS IDEA OF

HOW CAN WE KIND OF CONNECT THE STEM EDUCATION QUESTION WITH THE

TECHNICAL SKILLS QUESTION AND THE WORKFORCE QUESTION, BECAUSE

AS THE ECONOMY GROWS, THE AUTOMATION QUESTION, A LOT ABOUT

THE TECHNICAL SKILLS, HOW CAN WE MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE WAY K

THROUGH 12 AND EVEN BEYOND, WE HAVE THE RIGHT STEM TOOLS IN

PLACE FOR AMERICANS TO SUCCEED. THE OTHER THING I WANT TO TALK

ABOUT A LITTLE BIT IN THIS SUPPORTING BASIC RESEARCH.

I THINK THIS IS SOMETHING THAT THE ADMINISTRATION HAS MADE A

VERY SORT OF -- TAKEN A VERY STRONG POSITION ON.

FOR US IN THESE SORT OF TIGHT BUDGET ENVIRONMENTS, IT'S

EXTRAORDINARILY IMPORTANT TO USE THE TAXPAYER DOLLARS THAT WE DO

HAVE TO DIRECT IT TOWARDS S & T OBJECTIVES WHICH WE ARE REALLY

GOOD AT AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR IS NOT REALLY GOOD AT.

I THINK THIS IS WHERE WE CONTINUE TO DOUBLE DOWN AND

FOCUS ON BASIC RESEARCH. WHEN WE THINK ABOUT THE WORK

THAT OUR NATIONAL LABS DO OR THE TYPE OF RESEARCH THAT NSF PAYS

FOR, THIS IS THE TYPE OF WORK THAT PRIVATE SECTOR IS JUST NOT

EXCITE OR CAN GET EXCITED TO DO JUST BECAUSE THE RETURN ON

INVESTMENT IS SO LOW. THERE'S A LOT OF RISK THERE AND

IT'S NOT SOMETHING THEY'RE WILLING TO PUT DOLLARS TOWARD.

SO FOR US WE SPENT A LOT OF TIME OVER THE LAST YEAR KIND OF

FINDING WAYS TO KIND OF REFOCUS ON BASIC RESEARCH, THINGS MORE

LIKE THIS EXCITING PROJECT CALLED LB & F, I CAN GIVE YOU A

QUICK ASIDE, FASCINATING. YOU CAN SEE THE LAB ON THE

RIGHT, YOU HAVE A PARTICLE ACCELERATOR AND WHEN YOU SMASH

ATOMS AT VERY HIGH SPEEDS, YOU CREATE NEW TREE NODES, WHICH ARE

THE SORT OF SMALLEST KNOWN PARTICLE IN THE UNIVERSE.

THESE CAN PASS THROUGH OUR BODY, PASS THROUGH THE EARTH,

WHATEVER, AND IN ORDER TO MEASURE THEM VERY CLEANLY, YOU

NEED TO PUT THEM IN THE ENVIRONMENT WHETHER OR NOT

THEY'RE INTERFACING WITH OTHER TREE NODES, ATMOSPHERE, SPACE,

WHEREVER IT MAY BE. SO IN SOUTH DAKOTA, THERE WAS A

GOLD MINE WHICH WAS CLOSING AND IN ORDER TO MAKE USE OF THAT

FACILITY, NOT A WHOLE LOT OF TOWN TO SHUT DOWN, DOE WITH SOME

PHILANTHROPIC INVESTORS AND SOME FLYNN THROW P.S.I.S, SOME FOLKS

FROM EUROPE ALL OVER THE WORLD CAME TOGETHER AND CREATED AN

UNDERGROUND LAB. IN THIS LAB, THEY'RE ACTUALLY

CREATING -- THEY'RE BUILDING DETECTORS FOR NEW TREE NODES.

SO IF YOU SMASH ATOMS TOGETHER, CREATE NEW TREE NODES, THEY PASS

THROUGH THE EARTH, UNDERGROUND, AND THEY'RE MEASURED IN -- AT

THIS UNDERGROUND GOLD MINE IN SOUTH DAKOTA, AND THROUGH THESE

DISCOVERIES, WE'RE ABLE TO SORT OF UNLOCK SOME OF THE MYSTERIES

OF THE UNIVERSE AND HOPEFULLY BETTER UNDERSTAND DARK MATTER.

THIS IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF THE TYPE OF PROJECT THE PRIVATE

SECTOR WOULD NEVER FUND AND NOT BE INTERESTED IN FUNDING, YET

IT'S EXTRAORDINARILY IMPORTANT FOR THE FUTURE OF HUMANITY IN

GENERAL TO MAKE THESE DISCOVERIES.

SO THIS IS THE KIND OF WORK WE LIKE TO FOCUS ON, SO LESS

SOLINDRA AND MORE WORK LIKE THIS.

WE WORK VERY HARD TO DEFEND AMERICAN TECHNOLOGIES ABROAD,

AND FOR A LOT OF OUR TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES, IT'S EXTRAORDINARILY

CRITICAL THAT THE IP THEY CREATE HERE AND THE GREAT WORK THAT

THEY DO HERE IN AMERICA IS NOT SORT OF DESTROYED OR LOST WHEN

THEY TRY TO DO BUSINESS OVERSEAS.

SO WE TRAVEL ABROAD WHETHER IT'S THE G7 OR A G-20 OR APEC WHERE

THE PRESIDENT WANT TO GO, OR EVEN THE MATH INNOVATION, IT'S

ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL THAT WE DEFEND OUR TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES.

WHETHER IT'S PUSHING BACK INTO THE IDEA OF HAVING TO HAND OVER

YOUR I.P. AS A REQUIREMENT FOR DOING BUSINESS, THESE ARE ALL

THINGS THAT WE VERY MUCH TRY TO PUSH BACK AGAINST AND ALL THE

GREAT TECH WORK YOU GUYS ARE DOING, IF YOU WANT TO DO THAT IN

CHINA OR ANOTHER COUNTRY, WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THE GREAT WORK

YOU DO ESSENTIALLY ISN'T STOLEN. THERE WAS A GREAT ANNOUNCEMENT

TWO DAYS AGO ON SPACE, THE PRESIDENT RECONSTITUTED THE

NATIONAL SPACE COUNCIL. WE MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT A

COUPLE DAYS AGO THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE SORT OF RETURNING OUR

FOCUS TO THE MOON, AWAY FROM ASTEROIDS, AND I THINK IT'S A

VERY EXCITING MOMENT IN SPACE TO HAVE A VICE PRESIDENT LIKE VICE

PRESIDENT PENCE WHO'S SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE,

TAKEN GREAT OWNERSHIP ON THE SPACE COUNCIL THIS PAST SUMMER

SO WE'RE VERY EXCITED TO ROUND OUT OUR SCIENCE AND TECH

PORTFOLIO WITH A STRONG FOCUS ON SPACE.

ANOTHER BIG PUSH WE DID EARLY IN THE ADMINISTRATION WHICH I THINK

TIES IN A LOT TO THE WORK WE'RE DOING NOW IS A GENERAL PUSH ON

MODERNIZING GOVERNMENT TECHNOLOGY.

AS MANY OF YOU MAY KNOW, THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SPENDS ABOUT

$86 BILLION A YEAR ON I.T. ABOUT $44,000 PER FEDERAL

EMPLOYEE. ASK YOURSELVES, WHAT DOES A

PRIVATE SECTOR COMPANY SPEND PER EMPLOYEE ON I.T.?

YOU'RE LOOKING AT ROUGHLY 8 TO 10X IS WHAT THE FEDS ARE

SPENDING. SO THESE NUMBERS ARE SCARY HIGH

AND EVEN IF YOU LAYER IN THE IMPORTANCE OF NATIONAL SECURITY

AND OTHER ISSUE, IT'S OBVIOUS THEY'RE GOING TO PUSH THE COST

UP, IT'S STILL OBSCENELY EXPENSIVE.

I THINK A MAJORITY OF THAT IS SPENT ON MAINTAINING LEGACY

INFRASTRUCTURE. SO I THINK AS WE BEGAN THE

ADMINISTRATION, WE MADE A VERY BIG PUSH ON FOCUSING ON THIS

PARTICULAR ISSUE. WE ALSO HAD AN EVENT AT THE

WHITE HOUSE, SENIOR ADVISER JARED KUSHNER MADE SOME REMARKS

ABOUT THIS, AND WE'RE DEVELOPING -- WE RELEASED THIS

PLAN OR REPORT FOR MODERNIZATION, IT WENT OUT FOR

COMMENT AND ACTUALLY YOU SHOULD BE SEEING IT -- THOSE COMMENTS

WERE SORT OF DIGESTED AND THE NEW FINALIZED REPORT IS COMING

OUT TODAY, SO YOU SHOULD ALL STAY TUNED AND LOOK FOR THAT

LATER TODAY, BUT I THINK THIS TIES IN WITH A LOT OF THE WORK

THAT WE'RE DOING AT EACH OF THE AGENCIES.

HOW CAN WE MAKE SURE THE TECHNOLOGY TOOLS THAT ALL OF OUR

AGENTS ARE USING ARE THE LATEST AND THE GREATEST?

THERE'S NO REASON WHY PROCUREMENT PROCESSES SHOULD

TAKE TWO TO THREE YEARS, ESPECIALLY ON THE TECH FRONT.

THINK ABOUT THE TYPES OF TECHNOLOGY THAT YOU WERE USING

THREE YEARS AGO AND THE TYPES YOU'RE USING NOW, THAT

3-YEAR-OLD TECHNOLOGY, IS THAT WHAT YOU REALLY SHOULD BE USING?

THE ANSWER IS NO. FROM THE PROCUREMENT QUESTION,

BLEEDING INTO A LOT OF THE DATA WORK BRUCE IS TALKING ABOUT HOW

YOU DO WE BETTER UNLOCK THE TECH DATA USERS HAVE PAID FOR AND

ALLOWED THE AMERICAN PUBLIC TO BETTER UTILIZE IT.

SO THAT'S GENERALLY KIND OF THE WAY THAT WE THINK SCIENCE AND

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY POLICY, AND I CHALLENGE ALL OF YOU TODAY

TO THINK VERY CRITICALLY ABOUT THE TYPES OF TOOLS AND TYPES OF

QUESTIONS THAT YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT USING AT YOUR INDIVIDUAL

AGENCIES IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR. FOR US AND WHAT OUR MISSION HAS

BEEN OVER THE PAST YEAR IS TO REALLY PROVIDE AND CREATE

ENVIRONMENT WHERE THE GREATEST INNOVATORS CAN DO THE WORK HERE

IN THE U.S. FOR US WHAT'S CONSTANTLY

FRUSTRATING IS HEARING WHAT THOSE ROAD BLOCKS ARE.

MY PERSONAL MISSION, THE MISSION IN MY OFFICE AND THE MISSION OF

THE PRESIDENT TO GET THOSE ROAD BLOCKS OUT OF THE WAY.

SO PLEASE LET US KNOW, YOU'RE IN GOOD HANDS WITH BRUCE, THIS IS

ONE OF THE MOST FORWARD LEADING AGENCIES WHEN IT COMES TO

TECHNOLOGY, IT REALLY IS INCREDIBLE.

SO THANK YOU SO MUCH AND HOPEFULLY THIS WAS A GOOD

OVERVIEW OF WHERE WE'RE SITTING. [APPLAUSE]
