Fans of "Star Vs. The Forces of Evil" may be sad to know that the latest season of the show came to an end this month.
But Janna fans, or even Filipino fans, would be happy to know that there may be confirmation
that Janna is of Filipino descent.
Regular viewers and subscribers of my channel might be thinking, "Uh, yeah Frank you already
mentioned Janna in your Filipino Cartoon Characters video, so tell us something we don't know."
And yes, you're right!
But I feel Janna is too cool and important a character to just condense into a video
with other characters.
I felt it necessary to go in-depth and do an analysis about her in her very own video!
Plus, when I made that video earlier this year, it was just pure skepticism and assumption
that she may or may not be Filipino.
There is possible confirmation by the show's creator which I will get into in this video,
but before I do that, let's take a look at the entire picture, shall we?
First things first, as we all know, Janna is portrayed as a young teenage student.
Her physical appearance depicts her with dark black hair, tanned skin, and brown eyes.
Does this make her Filipino by default?
Not exactly, but that doesn't count her out either.
Those traits put her at a higher percentage of being Filipino than someone like Star,
who not only is an alien, but has blonde hair, blue eyes, and milky white skin.
With that said, Filipinos have dark hair, tanned skin, and brown eyes, so appearance
wise, Janna fits the picture.
But wait, what about Marco Diaz?
His skin tone and eye color are the same as Janna's and his hair is dark too.
Does this mean he is Filipino?
Although Diaz is a Hispanic last name, Filipinos are known for having Spanish-sounding surnames
due to historical colonization.
Marco's parents are depicted as a Hispanic family on the show and in the book, "Star
and Marco's Guide to Mastering Every Dimension," it states that his dad is even born in Mexico.
Unfortunately, Janna's parents are never depicted on the show so we cannot generalize
about her family background or culture like we can with Marco's.
Throughout the course of the show, I don't think it is ever mentioned what Janna's
last name is.
At first, I thought it could be "Banana" and then realized that "Janna Banana"
is obviously a nickname and not her full name.
Wikipedia lists her name as "Janna Ordonia" and in "Star and Marco's Guide to Mastering
Every Dimension," it officially lists her last name as "Ordonia" in the yearbook
page.
This is probably the only place where her name is canonically listed in its entirety.
Now, Ordonia is a predominately Filipino name.
I literally googled "Ordonia" to see if there are other countries where such a unique
last name is popular, and what do you know, it's a popular last name in the Philippines!
So, appearance – check.
Surname – check.
Let's see what else we can look at.
The show takes place in fictional Echo Creek.
Based on clues on the show, this more than likely takes place in California.
The flag outside of Echo Creek Academy bears much resemblance to the state flag of California,
and the palm trees and structure of the buildings on the show further support this.
With that said, even though the show has lots of diversity in its characters, California
is home to the most number of Filipinos than any other state in America.
It's a small detail, but adds to the fact that Janna is a Filipina-American.
This is probably the one place where Janna breaks away from the stereotypical "polite,
friendly, hospitalable" Filipino traits.
Most Filipinos find it taboo to talk about death or dwell upon such dark subject matter,
but Janna is into macabre things, paranormal activity, and even dated a skeleton named
Bernardo!
Additionally, she is depicted as somewhat of a troublemaker, sarcastic by nature, and
a bit of a bully to Marco.
But of course, Filipinos are unique in their traits and characteristics and cannot be defined
by what they like and dislike.
Regardless, it's good to see Janna as an unconventional Filipina on the show.
So taking everything into account, is Janna Ordonia 100% Filipino?
Not quite.
However, the proof could be found on Instagram.
A fan of the show, glossaryk, made a post about Janna being a Filipino, and Daron Nefcy,
the show's creator, liked the post.
I repeat, she liked the post!
Now if Janna was supposed to be of another ethnicity, Daron could have easily commented
that she wasn't.
Until proven otherwise, this is the confirmation we need that shows that Janna is of Philippine
descent!
I would prefer a "Yes she is a Filipina" straight up like they did with Lars in Steven
Universe, but for now, this helps to break down some skepticism of where Janna is from.
Let me know in the comments below what you think and if you think Janna is a Filipino?
What would you like to see in Season 4 for her character?
Me, I would like to see what her parents look like or have her do something Filipino like
Lars did in Steven Universe with baking an ube roll cake.
