Champions Cup: English teams are off their game - Tom Youngs

Only home wins against French opposition for Bath and Wasps at the weekend prevented a double wipeout in the back-to-back games which have given them a head-to-headache in the tournament.

As things stand, Bath are the sole English club in position to qualify for the knockout stages.

That bleak scenario can change over the course of the final two group games in January but the Premiership sides have left themselves with a lot to do.

At a time when the national side is riding high, it looks a contradictory state of affairs but there may be a link between the two. Eddie Jones makes no secret of the fact that he works his England players extremely hard.

He takes pride in pushing them physically because he believes that they need to be the fittest side in the world to win the World Cup in 2019.

He used last month's international period as part Test match window, part training block. Once it was over the players returned to their clubs and were immediately thrust back into a Premiership week.

Contrast that with Ireland's internationals who were given the equivalent Pro 14 week off on the orders of the Joe Schmidt.

The Ireland coach did so with the national side in mind but the benefits were felt by the Irish provinces. Energised by rested and restored star players, they wiped out their English rivals 6-0 over the past fortnight.

Schmidt was also to issue such a decree because his players are on IRFU contracts. If Jones had issued the same directive, he would have been ignored by the English clubs because the players belong to them outside the Test window.

Leicester, beaten on successive weekends by Munster, had four of the England side in their line-up but you would have been hard pressed to tell. "A lot of teams have lost, and lost the double.

It is very strange how every English team seems off their game a little bit," said Tigers' captain Tom Youngs. "The England boys come off a very intense camp with Eddie and they are a bit weary.

I don't know how you manage that as Premiership Rugby but that probably needs looking at.

"To come straight back from an international back playing is tough for those guys. You go from playing at a massive stadium to coming back to playing in a park. The drive is not quite there, it's different.

It takes a while to adjust back, and to adjust back to family life.  "Mentally, you freshen up a little bit and you become a little bit more hungry after a week off.

Your body gets a little bit of a rest but, more than that, your mind gets a rest. "The reality of it, as players, we're not going to ask for a game off.

I love playing for Leicester and any opportunity I will get, I'll take it.

It's the way it is here but the game is getting more physical and the expectation is more and more."  There is a cumulative effect at work here too.

Ireland's Lions did not start their seasons until October, their other Test players mid-September. England's summer tourists were, by and large, pressed straight into club service at the start of September.

This weekend they will go back into a run of Premiership games while Ireland's players are restricted to two appearances in the three Pro14 games over the Festive period.

If they want to prioritise Europe, it is up to the English clubs to see the bigger picture.

If they want the best out of their star assets, they are going to have to be smarter about when they use them. Less could well bring more.

CHRISTMAS PROJECT SHARE! 22 Cards, 1 6x6 Paper Pad: Craftsmith Falalalallama! - Duration: 8:14.

Hey guys! I am back with another project share for you. This project was inspired by Jess

Crafts' many "X Number Of Cards, 1 Paper Pad" videos; I will link her channel below.

She has a ton of videos where she takes one 6x6 paper pad - usually by Doodlebug - and

just mass-produces cards with them. And she always has a corresponding blog post where

she lists off the dimensions that she used and whatnot, and as someone who's just getting

into cardmaking, I do find that very helpful!

So inspired by all of her videos, I decided to try and do something similar with that

"Falalalallama" 6x6 paper pad that I picked up at Michaels a while ago. I can guarantee

these are not nearly as good as what she does, but I did try! [laughs]

So most of these cards were just made with the paper pad and cardstock from those half-pound

packs from Dollar Tree. I used the biggest strips of cardstock that come in those packs,

which end up being just shy of A2 size - A2 cards are 4 ¼ inches by 5 1/2 inches, and

these cards ended up being 4 ⅛ inches by 5 ¼. I'm not sure if I scaled things down

exactly correctly, but I tried!

I did also have to end up using a few embellishments from my stash to finish off the last few cards,

but I'll explain that as I come to them.

So the first 10 cards were made with a slate blue cardstock; I ended up putting white cardstock

in the inside, so that things could be written in them and actually be visible, because the

blue cardstock is so dark.

So this was the first card that I made, and I instantly screwed it up by cutting the base

layer too small [laughs]. As you can see, the second card with the same design looks

a lot better, because the base is covering the majority of the card, whereas this is

too skinny. I did find that the cards looked a little boring just with the base layers

and the cut aparts, so I ended up going into my stash and pulling out these "Merry Christmas" stickers.

This one doesn't want to stick, but this is the screw-up anyways, so whatever. [laughs]

These "Merry Christmas" stickers that were in the Michaels seasonal sticker book.

Oh, and pro tip: Dollar Tree cardstock does NOT like wet glue, apparently. Either that

or I applied too much, although I don't think I did. I ran out of glue runners part

way through making the cards, and couldn't find the others I'd stashed away, so I pulled

out some wet glue to make a few of them. And you can tell which ones they are because they're

kinda curled up. This one, I don't think I used wet glue for it, but it is-- it's

kinda curled. And you'll see which ones were made with wet glue, cuz they're worse than this! [laughs]

Next there are these two "It's Coal: You Know Why" cards, which I really like, probably

because I just think this tag is hilarious.

Then there are these two that say "Ho Ho Ho!" with llamas pulling the sleigh…

For these two, I attempted to use Jess Crafts' trick of using a strip of paper to combine

two scraps of paper into one base layer - on both of these cards, these are two separate

pieces of paper, but if you combine them together, they become one base size. And I think it

kind of worked. I used-- this one was like a border piece that could be cut out, and

this was just a small scrap that I used. And in hindsight, I probably should have put these

embellishments on this one; I just thought that these would bring in some of the pink

a little better, whereas this one already has pink on it, but I think it might be a

little too busy now, and these probably would have worked better on this card, but oh well!

Oh, and this card, I accidentally glued the base layer on to the wrong side of the card

base, so it was like… [laughs]... the card opened this way. So I ended up having to cut

it off and glue it on another card the right way. So this base is nice and extra thick…

or the front of the card, rather, is extra thick, because… I screwed up and had to

fix it!

I attempted to do the same "two scraps as one base" thing with this card; it worked

a little better, cuz the cut apart that I used was bigger, so it kinda hides it better.

But again, I used wet glue on this one, and as you can see, it's all kinda warped, which

sucks. And flattening it out didn't help, so… [laughs]

And this is the last blue card that I made; I was having trouble using up the last of

my scraps and whatnot, and some of the larger, full-page pieces of paper from the pad, but

I think this one turned out okay. In hindsight I probably should have used my corner rounder a

lot more, because I really like how this turned out.

Moving on to the 12 cards I made on this light green cardstock; this one, I didn't put

any white cardstock on the inside, because it's still pretty light on the inside.

So I made two of this design…

Another wet glue, double-scrap card…

This is where things started to get a little more challenging, because I ran out of background

paper, so I had to sort of work with scraps and cut aparts and such to put things together,

but I think these two turned out okay.

These two, I am not so thrilled with; I tried to use up some of my scraps, but I think they

ended up looking a little bit sloppy. And oddly enough, prior to my adding these little

snowflake gems from Dollar Tree, I thought they looked kinda… sparse, with the empty space.

But now that I have the snowflakes on there, I feel like it looks too busy, so… these

ones are kind of a fail, design-wise, I think.

This card uses one of the full-page 6x6 sheets; it took me a little while to figure out how

to use it on a card, but then it occurred to me to put the sentiment on the outside,

and then put the bottom of the page on the inside; then you've got all that space

there to write on. So I think that did turn out pretty cute.

I did the same thing with this one…

This is another card that I struggled with figuring out the balance between too boring

and too busy… initially I just had this border, this stripe, and this blank cut apart…

and then I eventually added this "December 25th" sticker from Dollar Tree, and this "Decembrrrrr"

embellishment from a Pebbles ephemera pack that I bought a while back at a scrapbooking

show… but it still looked really empty with all this blank space. So then I added these

snowflake gems from Dollar Tree, and this little angel llama that was like the last

one out of the paper pad, and I didn't want to not use it… I'm kinda torn on it - sometimes

I like how it came out, and other times I don't like how it came out.

This is a card that I think is not quite busy enough, but I don't know how to make it

more interesting without making it too busy, like I did with some of the other cards. The

background here is actually the half of the blue card I had to cut up, because I had pasted

the base layer on the wrong side of the card. Which was nice to let this turquoise piece

of paper, which is almost the same shade as the green, stick out from the green background.

And then both of these embellishments - the "Holly Jolly Christmas" and the poinsettia

- they were both from that Pebbles ephemera pack as well. And I actually had to fussy

cut this one, because there was a big, thick, ugly white border around it, and it just would've

totally taken away from the whole thing. So I do like how this turned out, but I'm still

kinda... I feel like it's missing something, and I really don't know what to add to it! [laughs]

And then finally, this was another "use up the scraps" card that I ended up being

really happy with, actually. All I did was use the leftover strips of blue cardstock

from when I was trimming them down to make the card bases, and I laid them across the

green card base diagonally, which added some interest. And then I just added-- err, rounded

the corners on these two cut aparts, and taped them down, and there you go! I actually really

like how this came out!

So that's it for this project share! I also have a paper bag mini album that I attempted

to make with some of my scraps, and some of the elements from the paper pack that I was

having a hard time using on cards, although I ended up coming back and making some cards

with the doubles of those pieces, including this one. But that mini album was kind of

a fail, so it's gonna be a separate video! [laughs]

So I hope you enjoyed this; if you did, please give me a big thumbs up. Please subscribe

if you haven't already, and I will see you guys in the next one.

Rugby news: Wasps thrash La Rochelle, Webb stings Northampton, Watson demands Bath focus - Duration: 6:49.

Rugby news: Wasps thrash La Rochelle, Webb stings Northampton, Watson demands Bath focus

Wasps 21 - La Rochelle 3 Wasps' wing Daly was taken off after 54 minutes of this Pool One clash yesterday with La Rochelle having done enough to give his club a chance of making the last eight of the Champions Cup.

The 25-year-old scored two tries, banged over the two conversions with regular kicker Jimmy Gopperth off injured already, before being removed with an ankle knock.

Daly will be crucial to Wasps' hopes of making the quarter-finals which they will have to win games against Ulster and Harlequins to qualify for.

And he is even more vital for Jones as England bid to win a historic third Six Nations title on the spin starting with the game against Italy on February 4.

Daly will be examined today but Wasps' director of rugby Dai Young fears the knock is nothing trivial and will rule him out of at least this weekend's Premiership action.

Young said: "The kid does not come off for much, so I am sure it a bang that will put him in doubt for the Gloucester game. "The first 48 hours will determine how bad it is.

Just because I know him as well as I do it is probably something that is not going to be right tomorrow.".

Daly's interventions in the 10th and 42nd minutes put Wasps on the road to a win that avenged their 49-29 defeat to the same opponents last week in France.

For his first trick he barged over French wing Gabriel Lacroix and for his second score he finished neatly after a sharp pass from Willie le Roux.

Daly went off after colliding with Le Roux while Wasps also lost playmaker Jimmy Gopperth in the seventh minute, with a knee injury, after he was crushed under the body of team mate Nathan Hughes.

No.8 Hughes, playing for the first time since the autumn internationals, made up for it with a big ball-carrying performance. Wasps should have been home and hosed by the time Daly went off but butchered several chances.

They still had hope of getting a bonus point when replacement hooker Tom Cruse was driven over from a line out on 73 minutes but they were thwarted.

A last ditch effort by the pack was thwarted by the French who were only too happy to deny Wasps the extras and head home.

***** Ospreys 32 - Northampton 15 Replacement scrum-half Rhys Webb scored twice as Ospreys completed a European Champions Cup double over struggling Northampton with a 32-15 bonus-point victory at a wet Liberty Stadium.

Ospreys, who backed up their 43-32 success at Franklin's Gardens, have given themselves a fighting chance in the Pool Two but will need to secure wins over Saracens and Clermont in the new year.

***** Bath 26 - Toulon 21 Anthony Watson has told his Bath teammates not to waste their hard work after opening the way to an appearance in the Champions Cup knockout stages.

The Bath full-back scored two tries as Bath moved to the top of Pool 5 with a dramatic 26-21 win over Toulon at The Rec. "It is definitely in our hands to qualify now.

We have to win our next two games, and take it from there," said Watson.

"For me, it makes no sense to go out there and not qualify now. Having beaten Toulon, it's really just a waste of time if we don't qualify.

"The group is in our control, I think, and it is about what we do now. "That first 20 minutes was probably our best representation this year.

We need to make sure we can replicate it in following games and try to turn it into an 80-minute performance." Exeter director of rugby Rob Baxter has urged his team to shelve thoughts of Europe despite keeping their Champions Cup hopes alive with a losing bonus point at Leinster.

The Premiership winners, who lost 22-17 to the unbeaten Irish province, need to beat Montpellier and Glasgow in their remaining Pool Three games to book a last-eight spot. But Exeter have domestic duties to attend to before those January ties.

They lead the English table by eight points and have league clashes with Northampton and Leicester over the festive period.

"The important thing is on Monday the players are ready to draw a line under the European Cup and move forward," said Baxter.

"What we can't do is say we have had a go at two games and we have not got much so we are going to have a bit of a blow at Christmas and not perform in two big Premiership games.".
