So, Fatwa the Musical, who do you see for a cast?

LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA: I knew I'd be in for a ride
'cause it's Larry David.
That's one of those bucket list dreams, right?
To play yourself on Curb. And I just thought
the dream had passed. It's been so long
since there's been a new season.
I started watching when I think I was in college.
I want you, Larry David, to play the lead in The Producers.
MIRANDA: I caught up with the Producers season.
My roommates and I, we'd go to my parents' house,
we'd all have dinner and we'd watch
The Sopranos and we'd watch Curb.
And, that was sort of our Sunday night tradition
'cause we didn't have cable at home.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDS)
I remember that season really distinctly
because how surreal it was that this world
I wanted to go into, Broadway, and had no idea
sort of, how to get in. I didn't have a show on
at that point, I was 22 years old.
Um, and here's Larry David sort of putting himself
in this musical. That's very formative for me.
Larry loves musicals.
Some of the most memorable episodes of Curb
center around some kind of musical theater aspect.
Whether it's the Producers season
or whether it's the episode where-- (CHUCKLING)
I laugh just thinking about it.
Where Larry meets a real life Officer Krupke.
-Familiar with West Side Story? -No sir.
-You never heard the song? -No, sir.
(SINGING) ♪ Oh, Officer Krupke What are we to do? ♪
♪ Gee, Officer Krupke Krup you ♪
So, when he pitched me, I sort of said,
"Yes," sight on scene. Cut to me in my underwear
dancing on stage. (LAUGHS)
♪ Get out ♪
♪ Your guests don't Let me go out there ♪
♪ You walk around in a robe With no underwear ♪
MIRANDA: One of my favorite things about the season
is his pitch.
♪ There's a fatwa. There's a fatwa ♪
♪ There's a fatwa There's a fatwa ♪
♪ Gotta run, I think I oughta ♪
-♪ Gotta hide, I think I gotta ♪ -Gotta.
I just think it's so funny that we're all here and...
this elaborate musical number,
probably because Larry thinks "fatwa" is a funny word.
-♪ (MUSIC PLAYING) ♪ -(SINGING)
DIRECTOR: Cut it there, thank you.
-Cut! -(ALL LAUGHING, TALKING)
MIRANDA: The version of me that I'm playing
is sort of relentlessly positive.
That old opening would work great now.
What?
♪ There's a fatwa There's a fatwa ♪
-♪ Gotta run, I think I oughta ♪ -Oh, I totally blocked that out.
Even if he's literally saying "no" to Larry's face,
he's like, "Oh great, that's-- that's fantastic.
We're gonna do the opposite of that."
Do you like this robe?
I-- Yeah, it's nice, I like it.
That's what I thought. We-- we need to see more robes.
You're gonna have to go shopping again.
When they let me know that my wife
had been written into the show,
she said, "Oh, you should have America Ferrera play me."
And I said "That's a great idea" and it happened.
So, this is the guy you're working with?
Yeah.
By the way, America looks just like my wife Vanessa
in real life.
-Hi, Vanessa. -VANESSA: So nice to meet you.
-Nice to meet you. -Yeah.
-I'm Larry David. -Hi, Larry.
When Larry first pitched this to me,
he said, "I think it ends with us in a duel."
And I said, okay.
Gentlemen, choose your weapon.
MIRANDA: Working with Nick Offerman,
and the fact that F. Murray Abraham is my second
is just so glorious.
Because it's all improvised, you don't really know
which way the scene's gonna go
when you walk into it.
Hey Larry, can I talk to you for a sec?
MIRANDA: They lay such a lovely blueprint out
that, you know, Larry's funny.
You know, the world he's set up is funny.
So, all you have to do is sort of be real
and react to it.
Lin, I was looking around, okay?
Nobody was watching the number.
I think that says more about you than it says
-about me honestly. -It doesn't say anything about me.
MIRANDA: And it's an opposing muscle group
from doing the same show eight times a week.
To, "All right now you're gonna agree with him about this
and disagree with him about this, and go."
It's freeing to come to set and not really having to worry
about lines. You just kind of go in and play.
And that's uh, that's really lovely.
