Episode 31 - The Coolest Tool - Duration: 5:11.

Hi, I'm Mike and this is Our Wyoming Life

I'm asked all the time about the tools that

I use while ranching, and there are a lot of them.

From tractors to balers and hammers and wrenches but last week I got a question in our mailbox

asking me what the coolest tool is that I get to use here on the ranch.

The answer to that question was simple to answer and I think it will really surprise

you.

In October of 2013 a freak blizzard hit Northeast Wyoming and South Dakota during the record

setting winter storm Atlas.

After days in the 70s and 80s the storm slammed in and caught a lot of ranchers, including

me unprepared.

The October 3rd storm brought 3 to 4 feet of snow following 2 inches of rain and cows

had yet to grow their winter coats that protect them from the wet snow that attacked their

bodies already chilled by freezing rain.

Cows went into survival mode, putting their head down and heading downwind, this caused

cows to walk over embankments or into creeks and ponds one after another, others were suffocated

by piling snow and some perished from hypothermia.

By the end of the storm the death toll topped 100,000 cows.

We lost a few also, our cows were still a few miles from home on their summer pasture

and rain softened the soil in some areas that the cows and calves couldn't get out of

it, many actually drowned as they were stuck in the mud and the snow buried them , crushing

them and pushing them into the wet soil underneath.

The cattle community came together and fundraisers were started, some ranchers lost their whole

herd with no way to get compensated or start over.

Luckily coming up on 4 years later, things have built back up and a lot of ranchers affected

by winter storm Atlas are still rebuilding, but just like us it seems like a never ending

project.

But, what does all this have to do with cool tools, well one tool in our tool box is there

to help us in a situation just like winter storm Atlas, and hopefully nothing like that

happens again soon, but we do get storms and snow and rain and that's where this comes

in.

It's a Flir thermal imager.

I had my first experience with thermal imaging in the military and after the storm of October

2013 I started thinking about how the technology could help ranchers, trust me, I didn't

have to think long.

It seemed like every time I turned around I found an application for thermal imaging.

Calving season is the big one.

With this I can pick out a calf laying in the grass from over a half of a mile away,

ascertain if the calves mom is around and see if the calf is moving or down.

I can scan our 400 acre calving pasture from multiple vantage points and reunite lost moms

with their calves.

Snow, Rain or shine, day or night and with an optical zoom I can get right up in a cows

business, literally.

So Travis from Yuma Arizona, you now have your answer, The coolest tool in my toolbox

is a Flir thermal imager.

I honestly don't know if they market these to ranchers, but they should because it gives

you the ability to see your herd like you never could before.

In order for ranching to continue to succeed it needs to embrace technology, my dad used

to keep track of herds of cattle with a notebook and a pencil, now we do it on computers with

cameras, but like with most family business sometimes technology takes a while to catch

on and that's ok.

I'll take my little wins but when flying cars come into production and are for sale

to the public, I will kick and scream like a 4 year old until I get one.

I like school, but I really love it when I get to eat gumballs.

We're at Skye's school.Give me a big thumbs up if you want to see if Skye is a good student

But before we start today's class, SKye needs to eat breakfast and do her work.

Sit in your high chair, Skye, so you can have your breakfast.

Skye: Oh boy, yes!

I can't wait.

I need food before I can learn.

Okay, Skye, here is your cereal.

This lesson is about colors.

On the board we have three colors.

I'm going to draw a heart under the first color with a pretty marker.

This color is red and this is a red heart.

So pretty.

On to the next color.

This is blue.

Now I'm going to draw a picture under it with a matching blue marker.

Let's draw a happy face.

See, the color is blue and I drew a blue happy face with a blue marker.

Now let's do the third color.

This time, I'm going to draw a cool shape.

He and Skye are very good friends.

He has a bright red firefighter's hat to protect him when he is saving people and animals.

He is always putting out fires and saving animals from burning buildings.

I can't believe it.

First an orange seal, and now a purple penguin.

Seals and penguins both like to live in the water, but they can go on land too.

It's so amazing that this Flipazoo is two toys in one!

I have a squishy Luigi, a brave Marshall toy, and a Flipazoo that

is two animals in one!

Last weekend, I got this T-shirt from The Cobblestones

These guys are from Berlin in Germany and they gave me this T-shirt

It was the only size they had left and thought that a size

Small would fit me

Well, it does fit me, but it's a bit tight

But now I know that if you want to send a band t-shirt

It doesn't matter if it's size small to large or extra-large

I will put it on anyway

in the last couple of years

Last week, I told you how we find our music and how we arrange it

And now we will show you how we record it in our home studio.

How this process evolves

Right now We will start the recording

with the basic

Of a song

And it's depending on who is playing which instrument

and how this song is build up

For some songs somebody of us can play alone

The other ones are playing with two or maybe even three persons

And this first song we recorded is played by William and Dieb together

And they will play the basic tracks of this song

and later me and David will join this recording session

This is a different approach to what we did in

The recordings of our home videos which you get when you subscribe to our newsletter

in this videos we played all four together

with only one stereo microphone

The only difference is that we don't get as much control over our recordings

than if we record it all separately

We're separate tracks with more control over the sound of our new recordings

if you have any questions about the recordings

we're going to do the next couple of weeks

Before Dieb and William can record this song

They first have to put on new strings on their instruments

We need new strings to be sure that the tuning stays steady

And also to get a more clear sound

It's easier to get clarity out of the recordings if we did want it

then add it to them

And to break in the strings

they first pull them and then they play it

Finally tonight, one of the country's biggest polluters is being held accountable for contaminating

the air in Texas.

A judge has ruled that ExxonMobil has to pay $21 million for violating the Clean Air Act

over 16,000 times.

According to the suit filed by the Sierra Club and Environment Texas between 2010 and

2013 Exxon's refinery plant in Baytown, Texas, which is just about 25 miles from Houston,

released more than 10 million pounds of poisonous compounds like sulfur dioxide, benzene, and

carbon monoxide directly into the air.

This victory was especially impressive because it has regular citizens that brought this

suit forward, not federal regulators.

The Clean Air Act allows any citizen to file a suit against any person or company for violating

the law, and this fine is thought to be one of the largest civil penalties ever won by

citizens in an environmental case.

This case proves that anyone has the power to stop corporate polluters from poisoning

the air that we breathe and the water we drink.

You don't need to be government to do it, you don't need to wait for corporate media

to lead the way, you simply need a commitment to protect your family and your community

to get this type of thing done.
