CURIOSITY ROVER BEAMS STRANGE PHOTO OF FLYING OBJECTS IN MARTIAN SKy

There are some people who strongly believe that Mars is home to lifeforms already, even

though the planet seems to be nothing more than a desolated surface.

Unusual objects have been called artifacts by enthusiasts, who say they are the remnants

of a former civilization.

Now there has been another indicator that there may be life on Mars and this time it

comes from the Curiosity Rover.

UFO WAS CAPTURED IN PHOTOGRAPH CLOSE TO CURIOSITY ROVER

The Curiosity Rover has beamed a photograph back that seemingly shows a UFO zipping through

the sky.

Of course, this anomaly is not the first to have occurred as over the last few years there

have been other sightings.

This time, however, the photograph has managed to capture a shape that is more defined, even

though it is a bit on the abstract side.

This gives a hint that the UFO was captured in the photograph while being close to the

Curiosity, unlike reports in the past.

The UFO was captured in one of two frames and this may be an indication that it was

an object that was flying at some considerable speed, due to the fact that it vanished in

the second frame.

Some people may say that the UFO is nothing more than a speck of dust, a flare on the

lens of the camera or just the camera malfunctioning, however, many people do not believe this due

to other similar occurrences of flying objects on Mars.

UFO CAPTURED WAS JUST SEEN AS A DOT The UFO that was captured is seen as nothing more

than a meaningless dot, however, in reality, it may be a clue that someone or something

is out there and making their way across Mars undertaking some mysterious deed.

Of course simple shapes such as a dot may be debunked very easily; however, there have

been many other sightings that have puzzled the experts.

One was the case of small lights that had been captured on the surface of Mars in eight

photographs.

Related sightings made it more intriguing.

One question that has been asked is whether humans are in fact being monitored by an alien

species on Mars or is it the government who has made mistakes and had advanced toys of

theirs captured on film?

ARE ALIENS WONDERING WHY HUMANS ARE ENCROACHING ON THEIR TERRITORY?

One thing that is certain is that appearances had been present whenever humans reached an

important milestone, the Moon landing and the UFOs for example.

When it comes to Mars, the bright shining orbs along with the shapes that are peculiar

do seem to look like flying objects, all of which seem to be spying on the Rover at some

distance and wondering what it is doing.

In some cases, they are perhaps posing in front of the Rover to try to make an impression

on earthlings, due to the fact that perhaps it is the humans that are intruding on their

territory and not the other way around.

Could the anomalies be easily explained away and could they be coincidences or are alien

lifeforms making themselves known and wondering why the people from Earth are invading their

privacy, or is it all related to some military or government secrets?

(Episode 1671)

This is Entertainment Weekly, and I'm Shin Hyunjoon.

Hello, I'm Jung Jiwon.

Last Tuesday, Korea's 19th president was elected.

It's the first weekend after the inauguration.

- People have high hopes for him. / - That's right.

- Do you have high hopes too, Hyunjoon? / - Me?

- Well, I'm a dad. / - Right.

So my wish is for our country to be a place where

children are safe and happy.

My wish is for our country to become a place where

young people and the disadvantaged can smile.

And for that, we're wearing blue that represents hope.

- Let's do our best with full of hope. / - Okay.

As citizens, we'll do our best at our own places.

We prepared a lot of news that will make you smile.

Jiyeon has prepared the first news report

to start off the show.

Yes. I'm ready with the news.

It's This Week's Hot Click.

There were a lot of events this week.

Both Moon Heejun and Park Joon have become fathers.

And actors Gwak Dowon and Jang Soyeon broke up.

Also, actress Lee Jaeeun is now divorced.

Let's click on This Week's Hot Click.

Three celebrity couples gave birth this week.

Last Wednesday, singers Lim Changjung

and Park Joon both became fathers.

Changjung, who already has three sons,

married an ordinary woman last January.

His son was born four months after their marriage.

He is now a father of four sons.

Both mother and child are safe and healthy.

Congratulations.

The next star who became a father is g.o.d's Park Joon.

(He got married in 2015.)

I'm going to get married.

You're going to

get married this May.

That's right. I'm getting married next month.

Congratulations. Last Wednesday, on the 10th,

he became a father of a beautiful girl.

Both the baby and the mother are healthy.

He adores his daughter.

I think the baby looks more like her dad.

That's not the end of good news.

The first idol couple, Moon Heejun and Soyul,

had a daughter Friday night.

They became the first ever idol couple

to have a child together.

However, the rumor of premarital pregnancy

has resurfaced after the birth of their daughter.

Heejun made a statement regarding this issue.

I feel responsible as a father.

I want to say this.

It feels very unfair to me.

I neither confirmed

nor denied it.

I wanted you to know that.

It's become a controversy since his stance has changed.

We wish all of them happiness.

Congratulations.

Next, Gwak Dowon and Jang Soyeon have broken up.

They started a relationship after being

an on-screen couple in the 2014 movie "The Wailing".

- I have a crush on someone. / - You have a crush?

I wish he would accept me.

That person was Dowon.

After that, they made their relationship public.

I'll be grateful if you can come.

(Laughing)

Since they were both old enough,

a lot of people expected them to get married.

Last October, while on a plane,

they were witnessed having an argument.

There were rumors of them breaking up.

As of today, their break up has become official.

They are back to being colleagues.

We can only wish both parties the best.

Next, Lee Jaeeun divorced after 11 years of marriage.

(Lee Jaeeun, divorced after 11 years)

Give me that. I'll do it.

Lee Jaeeun made her name as a child actor.

In 2006, She married her choreographer professor.

He is nine years older than her.

After 11 years, she announced their divorce.

(Lee Jaeeun Divorced After 11 years Of Marriage)

Two years ago,

she confessed that she was having a rocky marriage.

They were on a show and looked back on their marriage.

Reflecting on my past, I think I was lazy.

I also thought that I had

caused a lot of trouble for you.

They both repented and apologized to each other.

However, they couldn't overcome the crisis after all.

They agreed on getting a divorce.

There were a lot of speculative rumors

because of what they revealed through the show.

Since it's a private matter,

please refrain from doing more of that.

Jaeeun says she will focus on her acting career.

We wish her all the best.

Sulli, ex-member of f(x),

has found new love.

Is that right?

Last Wednesday, through the media,

she announced that she is in a relationship

with a brand director.

She surprised a lot of fans by announcing this

two months after her break-up with singer Choiza.

Her agency also acknowledged the relationship

just an hour after the article was published.

The couple met through mutual friends this year,

and began their relationship two months ago.

Sulli is always straightforward.

We hope you have a happy relationship.

Your film was invited to the Cannes Film Festival.

"The Villainess" has been invited

"The Villainess" is about an elite killer, Sookhee,

who has been trained since she was young.

After her mentor, Joongsang, dies, she becomes

a secret government agent and goes on missions.

While doing so, she discovers secrets about her.

After that, she starts taking revenge.

The action scenes are amazing.

- They are amazing. / - Is Okvin the villainess?

Yes, I am.

(Okvin plays the villainess.)

She's the villainess. What about you?

I'm the mentor for killers and also a killer myself.

I'm a higher-up of a secret government agency

that trains killers to become more competent.

Why are you guys all evil? You're all villains.

Sungjun, are you the good guy?

I am good.

- Are you? You're the only good guy. / - I am.

You look so innocent. I can't believe you use axes.

Knives, axes, rifles...

Hakyun taught her such skills, right?

I think you're like a master killer, right?

Do you agree to that?

Yes, I do.

Do you have a tough side?

I do, but I'm really feminine.

You are. You really are very feminine.

Don't judge me by my looks.

What does he mean?

I'm actually a fan of all of them.

I watched their films since I was young.

- I always went to go see their films. / - That's nice.

You're emphasizing "young" too much.

There isn't that much of an age difference.

I've seen their movies since grade school.

Grade school?

Did you only like them? What about Seohyung?

- I'm a big fan. / - Edit me out.

I'm a bigger fan of Seohyung than I'm of the others.

- I'm a really big fan. / - It's too late.

I'm too much of a fan of hers to say that I'm a fan.

You should have said that sooner.

- It must have been tough. / - They'll just erase me.

I was actually using these two as a cover-up.

- I'm actually a fan of Seohyung. / - That's enough.

I think my free-spirit is my weapon.

This inspired and liberated me.

If you were to go back to your past,

would you still choose your free-spiritedness?

No, I think I would choose another occupation.

I think being a news reporter will suit me better.

- That interests me. / - Come to Entertainment Weekly.

- I asked her. / - Would you like to give it a try?

- Yes. / - Really?

You'll be welcomed anytime.

Let's see what Hakyun wrote.

I wrote, "Because I didn't know anything."

You become courageous if you don't know anything.

I started acting purely because I liked it.

It gets harder and harder as I act.

What would you do if you could go back to the past?

I think I would still be an actor.

Is that so? Okay.

What about you, Seohyung?

"Unwavering conviction".

I always wanted to be an actress.

Are there any roles you would like to try?

I'd like to do some characters

that would erase my girl crush image.

Okay. To finish off, why don't you ask our viewers

for their support for the upcoming movie?

I'll start first.

- Our... / - Should we start?

They'll just follow if I start it.

I'll visit you with another drama soon. Thank you.

- He's cool. / - Be healthy.

It was the comfortable actor, Cho Jungseok.

Today, we're meeting celebrities

who are in love with sports.

It's the celebrity sports competitions

which were fiercer than any other competition.

Let's check it out right away.

(Celebrities in Love with Sports)

The first sport is bowling

which you can't get out of once you get a taste of it.

(Bowling)

Stress is all blown away with a strike.

With the satisfying sound, it's a cathartic feeling.

There's a bowling fever within the industry recently.

(Crazy for bowling)

- Bowling. / - I see.

What's your average score?

It's 180.

That means you're really good at it.

Girl's Day members are crazy about bowling that

it's not an exaggeration to say they bowl every day.

(They're like professionals.)

They visit bowling alleys often like professionals.

This star is also into bowling.

(He's known to enjoy bowling.)

Regardless of place and time,

Kim Soohyun shows his love for it.

He encountered it by chance

while staying abroad for a fan meeting.

He could do the perfect pose

even without a real bowling ball.

Too much in love with it, he went for a huge challenge.

He challenged himself to go pro.

(He tried out to become a professional bowler.)

(He took part in the 2016 Pro Bowler Selection Match.)

(He already looks like a pro.)

Singer Lee Honggi also participated in it

which became another hot topic.

Though the results weren't great,

their spirit for the game was acknowledged by many.

When you visit Korea,

after your schedule for the day is over,

what do you usually do?

I love playing screen golf.

Golf is another sport which celebrities enjoy.

(Celebrities enjoy playing golf.)

Daniel Henney is in fact an enthusiastic golfer who is

willing to screen golf if he can't go to a golf course.

And...

- Hello, everyone. / - Lee Gyeonggyu is also a golfer.

Good shot.

This person entered a special competition

out of his love for golf.

Lee Seungchul has been playing golf for 25 years.

At most, I've hit 1,000 to 2,000 golf balls a day.

Even these days, I hit at least 500 balls.

He said he has to practice no matter what

even if he can't practice singing.

He's known to be a lover of golf.

He even became a caddie.

Is the ballad king trying to be a golf king now?

You'll regret it if you miss this one.

It's baseball which will fully satisfy your eyes.

I'm not sure if it's for baseball or for the looks.

These stars grab your attention with their appearances.

They'd conquer the Major League if it was about looks.

(Jang Donggun loves playing baseball.)

Jang Donggun loves playing baseball so much

that he once dreamed of becoming an actual athlete.

He's now the leader of a baseball team.

- He really is different. / - Right.

(The tickets for the match were sold out.)

In the entertainment industry, there are many stars

who were originally athletes.

I was a fencer for seven years.

I was first in an Asian youth fencing competition.

showed their rhythmic gymnastics skills, .

Hello. I'm actor Lee Jungjae.

Through the works I've done so far,

I'll be looking back on my life.

The titles "star" and "actor" both suit him well.

This is Star Zoom In. Let's begin.

- He's great. / - We're featuring

a great Korean actor, Lee Jungjae.

You appear frequently on Entertainment Weekly.

But this is your first time on Star Zoom In.

Right. I've seen it, but I've never been on it.

This segment is called Star Zoom In,

and we have an in-depth discussion here.

Will it be an in-depth torture?

Isn't that what it's going to be like?

Are there films you're embarrassed about?

There are some movies I had worked on

- that I feel uncomfortable watching. / - I see.

Let's get some goosebumps.

He's got such an easy-going personality.

- And he's handsome too. / - Let's watch

some films that best represent you.

First, the first one is your debut show.

Let's check it out.

It's the youth drama

"Dinosaur Teacher".

- I remember the first shoot. / - Right.

I put the school uniform in a suitcase

- and carried it over my shoulder. / - You did.

I went to the set with it.

The other actors who were going to act

as fellow students saw me and said,

"That man from that commercial must be"

"acting as our teacher."

"Isn't he too young to be a teacher?"

After a debate, they said, "He must be the PE teacher."

They already drew a conclusion.

When I changed into the uniform

and sat in the classroom,

they said, "What's up with him?"

- They didn't know. / - Right.

You debuted in a TV commercial. Many people

are wondering how you landed the job.

The director saw the commercial and

contacted me first.

There was someone I used to be close with,

and he took me to a TV commercial company.

- Did he? / - Yes.

He suggested that I come with him and

say hi to the director because it's boring in the car.

When he saw me, he wanted me as a model.

That's how I replaced the old model.

- He was my savior. / - Right.

We can't forget about this one.

- That's your film debut. / - Right.

- Bae Changho's "The Young Man". / - You were

handsome and talented, so you became the lead.

Wasn't it a lot of pressure being the lead actor?

- I think I was nervous. / - Were you?

I wasn't sure if I was

- up for such a big role. / - Right.

I felt like I wasn't ready for it.

That's one of the reasons why

I entered college to study acting.

I see.

That's "Sandglass".

We can't talk about you without mentioning this.

I was serving in the army when it was being aired.

And I wasn't allowed to watch TV during training.

After the training, I went to work from home.

And I realized then how popular it was.

People even scared me.

Do you remember how it was rated?

At the time, it wasn't easy

to track viewer ratings.

- But it was the highest rated drama ever. / - It was.

(He admires it.)

I love that movie.

This movie taught me

that acting can be fun.

Do you remember when you first met Jung Woosung?

We first met at an awards ceremony

when we received the Rookie of the Year award together.

- I was in "Park vs Park". / - Right. I remember.

- It was a courtroom film. / - It was a comedy film.

We were on a show to promote our respective films,

- and we met again. / - I see.

"Let's watch Jungjae's new film 'Park vs Park'."

In the movie, my nose bleeds,

and I make a fool of myself.

They said, "Let's watch Jung Woosung's 'Beat' next."

He looked so amazing in the movie.

It made me wonder why I was there with him.

With "City of the Rising Sun", you got your first

- best actor award at the Blue Dragon Awards. / - Yes.

Your name was called, but you couldn't believe it.

Of course. I didn't expect it at all.

- I see. / - The other nominees

and their respective works were

simply amazing to me.

I watched them full of admiration.

And then suddenly, they called a name similar to mine.

I thought I heard it wrong.

- You thought it was a dream. / - I did.

- I couldn't believe it. / - He's humble.

"New World". Was that already four years ago?

- I know. / - Don't you think you've gone too far?

- That line was in the script. / - Yes.

(He hesitated when he saw the line.)

I thought, "Who says something like this these days?"

You thought it was outdated.

But that line became rather popular.

- I practiced that line a lot. / - It's tricky.

A lot of people talked about a sequel. People still do.

Would you do it if you get the chance?

The director has been thinking about it

- since then / - He was.

and still does now.

He wants a little more time.

He wants the leading character

to age a little bit.

I think he's waiting until I become old.

(He was a charismatic villain in "The Face Reader".)

You were Prince Suyang.

It was the manliest character I had ever played.

- The character was very masculine. / - Right.

He was powerful, violent,

and fearless. I wasn't sure

I could play it well.

I heard Kim Hyesoo wanted that role too.

She asked the director to change it to a princess.

"Assassination" was a good one too.

You have no embarrassing works to speak of.

When I first read the script of that movie,

I was thrilled.

It was the thrill I had never experienced before.

Every single character in that film was amazing.

I was impressed by the quality of the scenario.

How do you feel after watching your past works?

I can't say it's just about my work

because I think of the crew and my colleagues

who worked on them with me.

It brought back old memories.

The movie "Warriors of the Dawn" will be

another major film to be added to his list of movies.

In the trailer,

they say, "The King has abandoned his country."

They also say, "What should the subjects do then?"

These lines are quite provocative.

But in fact, the movie is about hope.

Rather than being pessimistic about the reality,

we can change something even in the worst situation

if we plan for the future together.

Yes, it's about hope.

When "Assassination" came out,

you visited our studio.

It became a hot topic.

The viewer ratings increased drastically after that.

- I mustn't ask for another visit, / - What's going on?

but still, can you visit us again some time?

If "Warriors of the Dawn" sells five million tickets,

I will make another visit to the studio

with coffee and sandwiches.

- Really? / - We all heard his promise.

We have this on tape this, right?

Five million is a piece of cake.

Will we get coffee and sandwiches?

It's becoming a habit now.

(He's nonchalant.)

- We'll be waiting for you. / - You're the best.

He became a superstar as soon as he debuted.

Now his name itself works as a brand.

I wish to talk to the world

as a great actor with deep eyes.

Thank you. I am actor Lee Jungjae.

We're always rooting for Lee Jungjae

who's always changing.

He's awesome.

- 21 years as a reporter. / - Why this all of a sudden?

What was that?

By the way, who are you?

I'm a girl who is 100 percent pure and pretty.

I'm today's profiler, Jisoo of Lovelyz.

It's the lovely Jisoo.

(Today's profiler, Jisoo of Lovelyz)

You're lovely.

Who is our target for today?

He stole people's hearts

with his unpredictable expressions.

He can act very well.

Main actors want to avoid him because

his screen presence is beyond that of lead actors.

He's very dangerous.

Send him in now.

Let's go see

a veteran actor.

What's your name?

Don't you know who I am?

- I do. / - He's acting already.

- Already. / - But many people

would probably take some time to remember your name.

(Kim Heewon)

It's Kim Heewon.

Your name is lovely.

Occupation?

A bad jerk.

A bad jerk?

The investigation is over. Take him into custody!

Why did you invite me if you're going to make it quick?

Well...

Why are you holding that?

Put that away.

He's very charismatic.

(Let's stop with the acting now.)

We'll talk more in detail today.

From your school life to you fleeing abroad.

"Fleeing"?

I'll start with the first tip-off.

- All right. / - You live according to your instinct.

What is this about?

He ran away while taking

the college entrance exam when he was 19.

The exam had a different name during our generation.

It was lunchtime after taking

the first two parts of the exam.

I saw a girl crying outside the gate.

- What? / - It turned out

she went outside for lunch

and was not allowed to come back inside.

It was considered cheating.

So I packed my bag and left the school

while secretly pushing her inside.

That girl must have taken the exam.

And I didn't finish taking the exam.

I was not going to pass anyway.

- What? / - So it didn't matter.

You can't stand injustice?

I'm not sure because

I haven't faced injustice that often.

(She agrees.)

- Well... / - Will you say a few words to that girl?

(How about a few words?)

I don't know who she is though.

Still, it was fate.

Her life changed because of you.

If any of you remember going through that incident,

lead a happy life.

I heard you also started acting impulsively.

After running away from the exam,

I bought newspapers.

I thought I should look for a job.

And this theater troupe was the only thing

I was qualified for.

Looking at the ad, I realized it should be my job.

I then applied for the audition. That was the start.

Did they pay you?

What's interesting is

I joined the theater to make a living,

but I never got paid.

Four to five years passed so quickly like that.

Did you find it exciting to be on stage?

Did you like doing it?

Rather than that...

The members sweated a lot,

and they didn't get paid.

(His colleagues worked hard despite the reality.)

But they were working really hard.

Looking at them,

I thought it was great to break a sweat

even though it was hard and didn't pay well.

That thought kept me going.

I prepared a surprising picture.

(A picture?)

What do you think, Nana Marlins?

You were the main character of a translated play.

I remember doing it right before I joined the army.

- Then this / - Yes, it's from a long time ago.

picture represents your past.

I was surprised to see it as well.

Is that really me?

Many comments

say he resembles Ryu Junyeol.

(Do they look alike?)

I think I look like him in this picture.

- I know. / - Right.

The second topic

is his suspicious former job.

I crushed everyone.

(He crushed everyone.)

It sounds scary.

Yes, I was in charge of painting walls.

I went in 1999.

- To where? / - I went to Australia.

Why?

I didn't think I was that good at acting.

It only made me hungry and it was tiring.

I thought I should quit,

so I really ran away.

Did you have any relatives in Australia?

Not at all. I just went there.

I did all sorts of things.

Everything was so difficult,

but painting walls was the easiest.

The equipment wasn't heavy.

I was a painter during the preparations of

the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

- And? / - And

they told me to paint the floor, so I did.

It turned out

I painted the stage floor.

They do a lot of cultural performances in the Olympics.

I checked

and found out that the troupe I used to work in

was to come to Australia and perform on the stage

which I painted that day.

And?

I helped them out preparing the props and all.

That made me so happy.

That's when you felt this was your job.

So I thought it over and over for a year

and decided to go back.

He was once a simple painter,

but he started to fill his scenes with his own colors.

He's great at acting.

After many films, you had your major breakthrough.

Let's take a look at it first.

(It's "The Man from Nowhere".)

The movie was incredible.

(He was loved by the public for his acting.)

After receiving the script,

I was sure this film would change my life.

You have this feeling.

People say you're perfect for villain roles.

What do you think about that?

Well, I'm happy that I'm good at something.

I hear you tried your best to love Seol Kyeonggu.

- Is that true? / - Yes.

What was your role in this movie?

- His goal was to be / - I see.

- the leader of the group. / - I see.

My goal was to always be his supporter.

Tell me about his strengths.

(What are his strengths?)

He's sincerely

considerate of his colleagues.

Maybe it's because he went through a lot as well.

He knows how hard it is to work in this field.

Heewon, I love you too.

You've never been in any love scandals.

Why don't you date anyone?

I have been at times.

It's just that the word doesn't go around.

(He delivers a big punchline at the end.)

Please tell us your plan or wish for this year.

I've been acting for about 28 years.

There's only one wish after acting for 20 years.

I wish to be in a place where I can always act.

That wish hasn't changed.

Thank you for your great stories.

You're too kind. Thank you.

The investigation ends here!

You will see Heewon in countless masterpieces.

We're rooting for you.

(We will continue to look forward to your work.)

Show us great performances, Heewon.

I'm rooting for you.

And Jungjae,

I will leave this seat empty for you.

I look forward to having delicious sandwiches.

- I hope your film is a success. / - I hope so too.

We will move on to the next segments.

Taejin and Seunghye are up next.

I visited a festival that heals the souls of youths.

In addition to exciting performances,

stars in each profession told great stories as mentors.

- Stay tuned for it. / - What was up with your voice?

I've prepared a special segment for Teacher's Day.

A lot of people will relate to this.

You'll see the history of teachers in dramas,

stars who specialize in playing teachers,

and charming teachers of different subjects.

You will be reminded of your precious memories.

- That's a wig, right? / - Let's go take a look at

- the teachers in dramas. / - It looks like a wig.

- Teacher, thank you. / - He looks like you.

Thank you.

They can be strict and harsh.

They can be friendly and caring.

They were like friends and mentors

during our school days.

They are our teachers.

From teachers who left a strong impression on us,

to their lines that spoke to our hearts.

This is a special A to Z segment about teachers.

- This will bring back memories. / - This will be fun.

Teachers were always a familiar role, but they change

depending on the time period and background.

"Tiger Teacher" was where it all started.

Who was it?

- He has a big build / - Come forward.

- and fierce eyes. / - I will leave it to you two.

Although he was scary enough to make them cry,

(He didn't hold back any words of encouragement.)

Tiger Teacher loved his students more than anyone.

This teacher held his own among

stars like Choi Soojin, Kim Minjong, and Kim Bosung.

Nightclubs are too boring.

Childuek is here!

Please come forward quickly.

Lee Deokhwa starts punishing students right away.

Come with me.

"Please."

In the 80s, teachers were known to be scary and strict.

At the time,

teachers were known to be dignified and stern.

In order to break away from that stereotype,

I tried my best in other films or platforms.

I remember that I took one of the roles for that cause.

In the 90s, just like Teacher Dongjin, played by

Byeon Woomin in "Let's Look at the Sky Sometimes",

there were many considerate and gentle teachers.

A student is going out for an urgent matter.

He mistook a laxative for digestive medicine.

He tried to continue as if nothing happened,

but he failed and ended up laughing.

Lee Hyojung played a teacher in "Dinosaur Teacher".

Can you tell me?

I'll tell you later.

(He was a gentle teacher who listened to his students.)

All right. Tell me later.

Teachers have gotten very gentle.

Why are you doing this to me?

In 2000, teachers who were more open became popular.

Do you want to play soccer with us?

(Sometimes they were more childish than kids.)

He kicked away his innocence just like the ball.

All of a sudden, they all tried to be funny.

(Teachers approached students like peers.)

- Goodness. / - She kept on making mistakes.

Her unique awkwardness made her into a comedian.

She was amazing.

These friendly teachers communicated

with students instead of being strict.

"Where are the flowers that grow without being shaken?"

As their teacher, I can't accept the punishment.

Sometimes, they are teachers of hope

who share the pains of students.

It's all right.

(Enthusiastic teachers appeared.)

Hold out your hands.

They stole the test papers and shared the answers.

In the scene, she punished students who didn't repent.

(She decided to feel the pain with them.)

Do you remember this scene?

Viewers thought about what teaching is truly about.

That's how you teach those students.

Even their parents let them do whatever they want.

It's not their fault.

(Teachers are not perfect.)

The more recent teachers mature together

with the students as they face hardships.

These actors specialize in playing teachers.

What does your father do?

It's him.

Kim Kwangkyu became popular by asking this question.

I'm not tired of playing teachers at all.

It's a line that got me out of a swamp.

Whenever I have a hard time, I say that line

about ten times and I get an offer for a new role.

- "What does your dad do?" / - "What does your dad do?"

My dad passed away.

However, there was a twist in that film.

I was in my mid-30s when I was in the movie.

I was a year younger than Yu Ohseong,

- but I was his teacher in the movie. / - Really?

Do you talk to him with the honorifics then?

Of course.

(Ohseong is older than he is.)

Who said I liked it?

Relax, Ohseong.

(Why are you taking it out on me?)

Mark my word.

This actor is considered the icon of teachers.

Who is it? It's Kim Haneul who played a teacher

in four different shows.

Doesn't it sting?

I love you.

To a student who confessed his love for her...

Why don't you listen to me? Why don't you?

You are a student, and I am a teacher!

She delivered the famous line in tears.

This gave birth to many parodies.

I am a teacher, and you are a student.

I am a teacher,

and you are a principal.

This really is a festival for talking nonsense.

- I'm a teacher. You are a student. / - What is this?

I poured all my emotions into that scene.

Was it that funny?

With her amazing acting, she monopolized teacher roles,

and became the best in her field.

("I Will Play a Teacher Again.")

With my heart pounding, I unfolded the note.

The note said

he's leaving school early.

Cheer up, Jisun.

- Weren't you a teacher? / - I was.

- Really? / - Yes.

From what I've heard, you were a Korean teacher.

Good/Bad - The Bunker - Duration: 12:02.

BOB: Four months ago I streamed "The Bunker" with some friends.

That stream ended up being criticized fairly heavily, with comments like: "Fucking enjoy

a game or two once in awhile." And: "Ugh.

White people." Which, y'know, fair enough.

But the comments were largely about how people were surprised we didn't like the game,

and I couldn't shake the feeling that streaming "The Bunker" somehow affected my enjoyment

of it.

Something similar happened to me with SOMA - I tried streaming that game but there was

so much attention to detail and nuance that I felt I was missing out.

Paying attention to the little things is hard when you're monitoring 3 screens, managing

chat, interacting with co-commentators and solving puzzles.

I ended up playing it alone, and I feel that vastly increased my appreciation of it.

Now, I know I can't reproduce the experience of playing a game for the first time, but

I went back and replayed The Bunker to see if my original impressions were accurate and

pick up on things I might've missed.

Here's what I found.

For those unfamiliar, The Bunker plays like an FMV game ala "Night Trap" and "Her

Story" - it's a series of filmed videos that have you performing actions to progress.

Which is great: I'm all for an FMV renaissance, especially now that they can take advantage

of current game design philosophies and film techniques that weren't around in the 80's

and 90's.

The plot of The Bunker is also promising: you play as John - the lone survivor of a

nuclear calamity living in a bunker in England.

The questions surrounding your situation make for a very engaging opening - but it doesn't

take long for things to start falling apart.

Just a few minutes into The Bunker and you're presented with your first gameplay element

- one that represents everything innately wrong with the game - a quicktime event to

start a newborn's breathing.

Now, let's make something clear: QTE's aren't inherently bad.

They can be used to great effect, as is the case in Telltale's "The Walking Dead" and

"Mass Effect".

In narrative-focused games, the best QTE's are more than simple reflex-testers - they're

timed choices.

Great QTE's also account for failing and don't simply game over when they aren't

completed.

QTE's are themselves a challenge of choice to the writers of a game - "be creative",

or "follow traditional game design".

The Bunker proudly does neither - the "breathe" QTE is merely a glorified pause screen.

The baby that the action applies to just lays there, not breathing, while the adults around

him repeat their actions over and over.

You can leave this QTE up for as long as you want - it has nothing to say about your inaction.

And this really defines the experience of playing The Bunker: just like breathing, the

actions you perform are largely foregone conclusions.

Another example: after the opening credits, the game stresses the importance of The Routine

- a list of daily actions the player-character must perform to be safe.

You can't perform these tasks out of order - the game simply will not let you.

Perform Task A, then Task B, then Task C, and so on, and so on.

Afterward, The Bunker will mix things up by performing these tasks on its own - on the

second day the radiation check, which was previously player-initiated, is done automatically

- indirectly pointing out the meaninglessness of the one thing that makes this game a game

at all.

The Bunker simply doesn't care if a real, live, thinking human being is playing it or

not - it just needs something to unpause it every now and then.

Most everyone in The Bunker sounds dejected and uninterested, save for John's mother

and the main antagonist Commissioner Bishop, who do perfectly fine with their roles, even

if Bishop turns into a dog after a certain point.

[BARK] Ultimately they're fine though because the

two are actually given characters to play that have motivations more complex than everyone

else's baseline of "I am worried".

See this guy?

This guy's uh- he's uh- he's the accountant.

He's the bunker's accountant.

And um he's worried.

This guy's the doctor.

He's the head doctor.

And uh.

He's worried.

This lady- this lady's the- [LAUGHTER]

Oh my god, what is wrong with her neck?

She's worried.

And I'm worried.

I'm worried about her neck.

I dunno what she's worried about- she's definitely worried.

The player character John is the epitome of this, what with his constant nervousness and

outright fear of nearly everything in the bunker.

This fits his character though - after all, John was raised in a bunker during a nuclear

apocalypse.

Of course he's going to be weird.

But this weirdness broaches outright annoyance far too many times, with John being resolved

to his bunker routine without question until the writers swoop in to force him into action.

See, John has no personality - he's an empty vessel the player's meant to fill.

But because there's basically no choice in the game, the player has no influence on

John's character, so his actions are all working toward his "fix the bunker so I

can do nothing until I die" goal, which is ultimately uninteresting.

Plus: if John had a catchphrase, it'd be his trademark whining and crying.

JOHN: No.

BOB: While that might make John more empathetic to some, I found it incredibly annoying.

Like an older, dirtier Shinji with a saliva problem.

If I were pressed to say one good thing about The Bunker, it'd be that the soundtrack

is pretty alright.

It's not that the game has no redeeming qualities - the visual framing and lighting

are good most of the time - it's just that the soundtrack is far better than the next

best thing.

It's got a John Carpenter quality to it and feels at home with the 80's theme of

nuclear annihilation.

[MUSIC]

At times I wish it were more subdued, but that's a personal preference.

A powerful tool that narrative-focused games have at their disposal is giving the player

opportunity to affect the plot through choice.

I touched on this earlier because QTE's are one way to execute these decisions, but

you just can't underestimate the power of a good branching narrative.

Even the simplest choices let players feel like their actions have meaning.

Branching narratives are an underutilized strength of gaming as a medium, and The Bunker

has one choice in the entire game.

That kinda sucks.

In world-building, nuance is powerful and makes everything inherently interesting.

And with its intriguing premise, The Bunker could've benefited from some attention to

detail - but sadly many details in the game's universe feel looked over.

Take for example John's mom's corpse.

Early on in the game John's mom dies, forcing John to live alone in the bunker.

But what could've been a sad, realistic take on what being forced to live with the

corpse of a loved one would be like is wildly undercut by the hilarious inclusion of a prop

skeleton.

I mean, not only is this practically a Halloween decoration, but in actuality it can take years

for a corpse to fully decompose into a skeleton in the bunker's current conditions.

The game implies this process happened overnight.

Additionally, at points there are obvious solutions to John's problems that make his

actions frustrating.

Take for example the NBC suit - a suit capable of handling radiation - which John wears at

a point in the game.

This one suit nullifies the danger of any radiation entirely - John just needs to keep

it around.

But of course the writers find a way for John to abandon the NBC suit because it's simply

too useful to keep.

Before we continue, be warned that there are spoilers for The Bunker in the next few segments.

If you want to avoid them, just skip ahead to the timecode on the screen now.

Okay, so the plot of The Bunker is as follows: everything was fine until you fell off a ladder

like an idiot.

Seriously - there's a bit of an emergency at first with some radiation being leaked

into the bunker, but John follows a few manuals to fix it.

As you progress from your room in Level 1 to the bunker's Level 5 basement, you're

presented with flashbacks, journals and reports of what happened to the original inhabitants

of the bunker and the world outside.

You can probably guess the answers to both.

[WHISPERING] Hint: everyone's dead.

Eventually you're tasked with fixing some failing equipment on Level 4 - aka a regular

old air filter that's apparently been damaged by radioactive raccoons.

After being viciously attacked by steam like 3 times because I thought the cutscene was

funny, John fixes this critical component of the entire bunker's operations.

He then climbs a ladder to turn a valve back on, slips because no one told him that ladders

work better when they're opened and not leaning against things, and somehow manages

to get a compound fracture from falling 4 feet at best.

And of course he hit the "flood bunker with radiation" lever on his way down.

It's rare to see such a contrived reason to push the plot forward, but John's utter

lack of motivation isn't getting us anywhere so there you go.

Not everything about The Bunker's story is lacking inspiration.

In fact, it seems the entire game was written around a single decent twist - that John and

his mom murdered everyone in the bunker to prevent themselves from starving.

This is genuinely interesting and one of the things about the game that keeps it from being

abysmal.

Despite that, this revelation comes with some plot holes.

Like, not only is using lindane ointment gas to kill people suspect, but let's assume

that it's as toxic and fast-acting as it seems to be.

How were John and John's mom unaffected by it?

Sure, when the gas is first released they're hiding in a sealed room, but they're quickly

forced to leave by an axe-wielding Bishop in an NBC suit.

I wouldn't view this as much of a problem if the lindane gas bottle being used to kill

everyone in the bunker wasn't located literally down the hall, leaking the majority of its

contents into the surrounding area.

The Bunker's endings provide the only real choice you have in the game, and it's a

shame because one ending's obvious and the other makes no sense.

So John eventually escapes the encroaching radiation of the bunker and avoids ghosts

stealing his shoes or something to end up at the entrance.

In the first ending, John leaves through the door, takes a breathe which represent the

first breath he took at the beginning of the game, and that's it.

Done.

Pretty straight-forward and obvious, though it raises some issues.

Like why is a hazardous amount of radiation leaking into the bunker in the first place

if the radiation levels outside are safe?

At one point in the game, John's mom asks how long it'll take for the radiation outside

to clear.

JOHN'S MOM: How long before it's safe to go back up?

BISHOP: Our best guess - 20-30 years.

BOB: Well, when John leaves the bunker it's been 20 years since that was said.

Shouldn't the radiation be clearing up by now instead of flooding John's bunker?

The second ending just doesn't make any sense.

John stays at the door to the bunker where he's visited by his dead mother, who reminds

him of the promise he made at the beginning of the game to not go outside.

So John doesn't leave and presumably succumbs to radiation inside the bunker.

The problem I have with this is that the purpose of the promise John made to his mom was to

keep John safe.

JOHN'S MOM: You've got to say it again.

JOHN: As long as I stick to the routine I'll be safe.

As long as I- JOHN'S MOM: I'll always be here.

JOHN: -stay in our rooms, I'll be safe.

As long as I don't go outside, I'll be safe.

BOB: The entire bunker is filling with deadly radiation.

It's not safe anymore.

The only opportunity he has to be safe is outside the bunker - but he doesn't go to

safety because technically he promised his mom he'd stay in the bunker?

Come on John.

We know you're weird and all but this is ridiculous.

So, did streaming The Bunker affect my opinion of it?

I'd say yeah, it did - I came out of my non-stream playthrough disliking it more than

I did during the stream.

As weird as it is to admit, I feel almost insulted by The Bunker.

Not by its utter banality, but because it is clearly trying to trick us into thinking

it's something that it's not.

Every single time one of those awful, meaningless QTE's popped up I asked myself the same

question: why isn't this a movie?

The "game" part of The Bunker gets in the way of its stronger aspects, and with

a few tweaks it'd make a decent short film.

As it stands right now, I'd say the far superior way to experience the game is through

a Let's Play.

That way you don't have to be bothered with the QTE's, and if you wanted to accurately

simulate what playing the game is like, just pause the video for 4 seconds every couple

minutes.

Gallery Talk: Christopher Olszewski - Duration: 19:20.

- Alright, thank you very much everyone

for coming on out today.

I'd also like to thank Penny and the selection committee

that brought me here.

I really appreciate it.

This is a fantastic space.

This is actually the largest space I've ever exhibited in

without seeing.

So I had a little bit of anxiety when she sent me

the actual schematic of this space here.

And then I looked at my work, and I was like,

"Oh, my god, how am I gonna be able to fill this space?"

So I worked really hard for the past year

to develop all of this work that you see.

And it's very fulfilling as an artist

to be able to come into a really fine space like this,

and to see your work hanging up.

I would like to say

that there are three aspects to my artwork.

First part is, I'm from Detroit.

I'm from Detroit, Michigan.

That, I realized, as I got older,

is really a defining place to be.

You know, everyone's rushing there right now.

It's a very vogue place to be.

Lots of artists, photographers,

a lot of things are happening there.

And it's really an interesting,

kind of rough, gritty, raw place to be.

I never really realized that when I lived there,

as far as growing up, but until I moved away,

I moved away back in 2006.

And I went back a few times, like,

"Holy crap, this place is absolutely insane."

It's gray, it's brick, everything's falling apart.

The rest of the world doesn't look like this, you know.

So until you move away from your surroundings,

and you go back,

it really has this deep, deep, deep kind of impact.

So that's one aspect of my artwork.

The other aspect is moving south.

I moved south, I moved to Mississippi.

I got out of Detroit, and I moved to Mississippi.

That was, for a while there, I was wondering

if I fell out of the pan and into the fire,

you know what I mean?

Mississippi is another whole different kind of madness

that's going on there.

Everything you heard about it is true.

It's absolutely nuts.

So I went from this place that's absolutely insane,

to another place that is absolutely insane.

I was like, "Is it me?

"Is it something that I'm doing wrong?

"Am I not eating correctly?

"Am I not praying to the correct god?

"what's going on here?

"Why is this happening to me?"

So I move a thousand miles south, and I see the exact same

kinds of problems that are going on,

same kind of racial tension, same kind of landscape,

it's much prettier, it was prettier in Mississippi,

they do have flowers year round,

so it's a little bit prettier, it's a little nicer,

but it still has this underlying tension,

this underlying violence, underlying kind of conflict.

And then in 2010, I moved to Savannah,

so finally I got to Savannah, I have an incredible job,

I work in an incredible place, I live on an island,

I live on an island right now, I got palm trees,

get to go to the beach, I got this cool tan,

it is really really a nice place to be.

So finally that I'm there in Savannah,

am I able to ingest all this kind of visual information

I've been absorbing for all these years

and this right here, this show that we have,

is kinda a manifestation of all those things.

First off is Detroit, that's how I picked this

Jeep Cherokee, a Jeep Cherokee I've been working with

for several years now, the Jeep Cherokee is the last

vehicle to be made in the city of Detroit,

so Detroit as everyone probably knows, is the motor city,

it's the car capital and all of this crap that they tell you

but Detroit only has one factory there

that actually assembles vehicles.

There's other assembly plants around the city,

there's some in Wayne, Warn, yes, there's lots of technical

things that are going on there, lot of research

and development, but there's no cars actually being

assembled except for the Jeep Cherokee,

so I'm trying to figure out this connection

between Georgia, where I live, and Detroit, how do I find

this place, how do I find this connection between the two

places, and the Jeep Cherokee is that connection.

The Cherokees' eastern capital is New Echota,

which is just north of Atlanta, I went there

and visited there several times, it's a really interesting

kind of spiritual place to be, and so I was trying

to do some more reading and more connection

between Cherokee and Detroit and figuring

these kinds of things out.

What I did was, last year, I wrote a fellowship,

I actually received it, I convinced a group of people

to give me money so I can purchase a vehicle.

These images here, the one over here, the green one

that's on the wall here, this one right here,

all these images that you see of this Cherokee,

it's a 1991 Cherokee, I bought it for $1800,

this is how insane I am, I bought it for $1800,

what kind of car do you get for $1800?

It's not very good, so I had to work on it for a few months,

I took the transmission apart, I did all sorts

of mechanical kinds of tinkering with it

just to make it work, and I took that vehicle

and I retraced the Trail of Tears.

Back in 1830, they had this Indian Removal Act,

so they wanted to kick out all the Native Americans

from the southeastern United States,

Cherokees being one of them.

That's who lived in Georgia, so I was like,

"Hmm, maybe I can figure this out.

"I'll take my 1992 Jeep Cherokee and go" on a 1500-mile

trek from New Echota all the way out to Tahlequah,

which is in Oklahoma, I went this really crazy

kind of trail that they've picked out,

it goes all the way up to southern Illinois

and then back down into Arkansas,

and then all the way out to Oklahoma,

so it's this really odd kind of trail.

I went through it, the air conditioning worked, sort of,

and so I went last summer, it performed very well.

For somebody, I'm not a mechanic, I took apart

the transmission, I took apart parts of the engine,

and I got the thing tinkering, I actually got it running,

my wife thinks I'm nuts, that's to say the least,

she's like, "What the hell are you doing?"

I was like, "I don't know, I gotta do this,"

so I'm putting this car together.

And she goes, "Are you really gonna drive that?"

And I'm like, "Yes," and off I went,

I loaded it up full of equipment, photography equipment,

I used videos, I made several different videos with this

in different spaces, it was actually really interesting.

Let's see, so with this vehicle, I retraced the Trail

of Tears and it actually performed very well.

I did not realize this but there are actual mountains

in Arkansas, this poor little car was going up

these mountains and it's going chug chug chug chug chug

up this mountain and all this compression is in the motor

and I'm spilling oil, I'm losing oil like crazy,

and as I get to the top, all this oil would be

around my manifolds, and so I'd have to stop occasionally

because it was just about ready to catch on fire,

I was like, "What's that smell, what's that funny smell?"

I was like, "Oh okay, so I need to stop,"

because there's smoke coming out of the hood and all that

oil that was leaking was going onto the manifold

so I had to spray it down and then go a few,

maybe about 50 miles or so and stop

and had to spray it down again, so I have all sorts

of little tales like that that go along.

But while I was working on the vehicle,

while the car was sitting in the driveway, I'd lay paper

down, and that's what all these drawings are on,

are on the paper that was laid underneath the vehicle.

My wife was a saint but she was like,

"You've gotta do something about this car,

"it's leaking oil, it's leaking coolant,

"it's leaking transmission fluid all over our really nice

"driveway that we have," so I was like,

"Okay, I can fix that, I'll just paper down,"

and so as I put the paper down, I was like,

"Hmm, now what can I do with this paper?"

So I saw it as this connection of this fluid,

this fluid of life, so you had the oil that has to be

in there, you had the transmission fluid,

and you have this coolant that's all kinda leaking

out of there and you have to maintain those fluids

or else the vehicle doesn't run,

and that's kinda the tinkering that I had to do with it.

My father-in-law told me, "Why don't you rent one,

"why don't you just rent one?

"Wouldn't that make it a lot easier?"

I'm like, "Yeah, but I don't have that grittiness

"that you would if you have a 1992

"that is just about ready to fall apart,

"where's the tension in that, where's the fun?"

So if I drive out there and drive back and nothing happens,

then that's no fun, you gotta have the windows up,

and I would drive, and I wouldn't have that kind of

connection with the actual space that I was connecting with.

The things with the Jeep Cherokee also in these drawings.

I would, this image right here is a Jeep that I saw

on the side of the Trail of Tears,

some are behind fences, some are kinda tangled up,

this one was really interesting, I was driving

and I slammed on the breaks, I saw this thing on the side

of the road, it was like this little aura around it,

it was like, "Look at me" kind of a thing, I was like,

"Oh man, fantastic, this is exactly what I need."

I stopped and I came around, it was like a 1976

giant, giant, really big ones, two door,

it's got those five-foot doors on there,

young kids, you guys don't know about this stuff,

they had doors back in the day that were like five feet long

and they weighed like 200 pounds,

that's one this one had, so you had to open the door

and physically feel the thing opening up,

and could knock you over kind of a thing.

So this was one of the images that I saw.

I took several photographs of it and I started developing

drawings based on these photographs.

And I put the drawings on top of the paper like I told you,

I had the soaked pieces of oil and transmission fluid

on there and I drew it out and I looked at it,

I was like, "Well, it looks nice, it looks like a graphic

"design project," very flat, not that there's anything

wrong with graphic design or anything like that,

but it's more like, this is more of a design-y

kind of thing, what can I do to it

that makes it have this much more of a connection,

what is it that makes this unique?

It's not really speaking to me.

So I thought about these maps that I was using,

yes, I'm old, I do have GPS and I do have an iPhone

but I still use maps, I like the texture of them,

I like the color of them, I like the way they feel,

and I take the maps out when I'm trying to figure out

where I'm going and side roads and all those kinds of things

from the map, so I thought about the map

and how the map was always in that space with me

so I started folding these up like maps.

I was looking at Cornelia Parker, she's a British artist

and she did these really really fantastic drawings

by just taking paper, folding them, and burning them,

and then she would layer them on top of each other

and they looked fantastic, I was like, "That is it."

I was kinda going through all this information,

I was like, "That's what I need to do,"

so I folded these things up and I burnt the edges.

It has this kind of a grid quality to it,

I'm really fond of grids, I love the Xs,

I love the circles, and this is another quality to it

that I tried to make the image that much more interesting.

What's underneath it is paper, I actually spray-painted

the paper and just laid that underneath

and put the drawings on top of it.

Where I got the inspiration for the color is there was

little Ford Fiesta, you guys seen those little things?

They're pretty cute, they cruise all around,

this guy lives around the corner, has the same color,

so I'm in my studio, look out the window,

and this little Fiesta goes by, and I was like,

"That's a stupid looking color," and I was sitting there

drawing some more, goes back this way.

I was like, "Well wait, wait a minute, how bout that color?"

And I started playing with different colors

and that color kind of fit, so I attribute it

to this little Fiesta that lives around the corner.

It's a Montana spray paint and if anybody likes the color

it's called Poison, Poison, isn't that a nice color?

Nice and sharp and sounds dirty.

So good, I need that also, so it kinda fits this kinda

connection with all these drawings that are on the wall.

When I moved south, also, I made other connections

like the drawing over there of Andrew Jackson,

he's the architect of the Trail of Tears

or the Indian Removal of 1830, but in Jackson, Mississippi,

where I was living, he was a hero, he was the one

that saved New Orleans during the War of 1812,

so people love, so it's really this kind of odd kind of

relationship with this guy, he did some decent things

and he did some really absolutely horrible things

at the exact same time, so it's this dichotomy

that's kinda going on, and let's see.

The other thing I have is with this image here,

with the circles, I don't know if you guys notice circles

on all my pieces, the circles are attributed to alcohol,

to beer, on the images I was gonna show you

during my presentation, is I have me with my bottles of beer

drawing these circles all over the drawings.

The reason why I use beer is that it is both cultures

that I have, I'm Polish and I'm Native American.

Alcohol plays a very very important role in my upbringing,

in my identity, in my culture, both cultures.

I go hang out with my Polish cousins, what do we do,

we go get after it, we get hammered, we start drinking beers

as fast as we can get them in our body, then we start doing

really really stupid things, it's fantastic.

Oh that's strange, when I go to the reservation

and hang out with my cousins there, what do we do?

Huh, the exact same thing, and this is really interesting,

how alcohol plays a role in where your status is,

how much can you drink, how far can you go,

what is it that you can do, are you really a man?

All those things are all played out,

all based on how much you can actually push down.

So I found this really interesting connection

between the cultures and that's what the beer is.

My grandfather said, "Two is too many and 100's not enough."

Two is too many and 100 is not enough.

You can drink two and you're already getting in trouble,

you can drink 100 and you're still thirsty.

So it's this really interesting

kind of thing that was going on.

About six months ago, I stopped drinking.

I stopped drinking beer, it's this really weird

kind of thing, I probably wasn't an alcoholic

but I stopped drinking and so I'm looking back

at all these really stupid things I did in my life

and I'm starting to develop these new drawings based on that

so these drawings here that I have,

it really makes these images cloudy, I hope you see.

It's difficult to see the Jeep that's underneath there,

it's really difficult to see a life when you're in this kind

of state, so I find this as some sort of enlightenment,

some kind of way of being able to navigate.

I didn't find Jesus, I'm not on some AA program

or nothing like that.

To be honest with you, I went to the doctor,

took my blood, he looked at these numbers

and said, "These numbers are awful."

I was like, "You know what, I'm paying too much money,

"I want a second opinion, obviously your opinion's wrong."

Went to the second doctor, took blood out, looked at these

numbers, said, "Holy crap, these numbers are awful,"

so I was like, "Well, maybe there's something to this."

So I kinda started eating a little bit healthier

and I stopped the alcohol, so it was really interesting,

how your numbers go right back where they're supposed to be

after you treat your body a little bit better.

The other images that I use are these Xs,

I don't know if you guys noticed these Xs.

Georgia did a really really hard fight

to keep the Confederate flag on their state flag.

It wasn't until recent, they finally took it off.

Mississippi is the only flag in the union

that has the confederate flag still on there.

I lived in this rebel kind of stronghold in Jackson,

Mississippi, it was madness, I'm telling you guys,

living up here in the north, you guys don't realize

how mad it is down there, so I started taking these Xs

and kinda using that, using that kind of crossroads,

using that kind of idea as the cultures are kind of

at this crossroads, they're at this intersection,

there's this kind of conflict that's happening

and so that's where these Xs come from,

you'll see on the Jeep itself, there's a little X

in front of the car itself, so I still have this kind

of confederate kind of chain that's kinda dragging along.

In the interior here, inside this space, you're gonna see

actual drawings from my trip that I took.

This is the notebook that I had.

I pick up every single little bit and piece and scrap

of paper, everything that is kind of around,

anything that looked goodie, anything with color on it,

I grab and I put in my pocket.

It's really strange, I had this job several years ago

where I worked for a pharmaceutical distribution company

and I had to have every single receipt

to prove that I was in that space.

So I had to have a receipt, this receipt that I actually

ate that lunch or I went to that musician

or I rented that car or whatever it was,

if that little piece of paper wasn't there, I didn't exist,

so I thought that was a really interesting kind of concept,

so I kinda started taking that into my artwork.

I went to Penn State today, and as I'm going through

these little galleries and stuff like that

and I went to the little coffee bar and stuff like that,

I'm picking up these little bits and pieces of paper.

All that stuff is going to be for future pieces.

So these pieces that are in the wall in the interior,

all that is all bits and pieces and scrap that I picked up

as I was going on the Trail of Tear,

through the Trail of Tears, so everything kind of

manifested itself into those drawings.

The other aspect of those drawings in the interior

is also what does the devil look like?

If you think about it, what does the devil look like,

does he have horns, does he have a pitchfork,

does he have this tail, does he have hoofed feet,

does he have all that stuff?

I don't know about, if some guy walked in the room

with that outfit and said, "Hey, smoke this, drink this,

"let's go do that, doesn't that sound like fun?"

You'd be like, "Get the hell away from me,

"you're out of your mind," but if it's enticing,

if it's something that is appealing to you,

if it's something that's seductive, you'd be like,

"You know what, that sounds like a pretty damn good idea."

So those drawings that are in there is,

what does the devil look like?

What is that siren to you, what is it that's going to

get you to go off the path, what is it that's gonna

make you think, "Well maybe we can try it just once,"

"we'll just see what happens," so that's what those

drawings are on the interior are all about,

is kinda what my idea of what the devil looks like,

what does it smell like, what does the devil taste like?

I wanna know this stuff, let's party, let's do this

for a few days, let's see where this thing can take us,

we've got somebody else's credit card,

let's see what happens, that kind of moment,

not this, "Maybe I'll have an extra cookie,"

that's not the devil, the devil is really trying to get you

to do something that's outside your comfort zone

and what would that person or what would that entity

look like in order for you to do that?

So that's what the interior's all about

and kinda these wrestling with different demons

and sometimes the demons get out and sometimes

you're trying to get 'em back in,

and I'm starting to get to a certain age,

getting a little older now, so I have to think about

my sugar intake and my triglycerides and all those things,

I'm thinking about retirement and do I have enough money

in there and stressing out about all about this stuff,

stuff that you young ones don't have to worry about

quite yet, so all those things I'm worrying about,

then all of a sudden that kind of temptations

and those things start to kind of adjust and kinda turn

over this kinda period of time.

But yeah, and that's about all I have to say.

How much time was that?

(audience applauds)

That was about 20 minutes, I can't believe it,

so I was right on that 20-minute mark,

I didn't wanna keep you guys any longer than that,

it's kinda like church, as soon as that one hour

gets up there, everyone's like, "What's going on?"

Yes.

- [Woman] Do you wanna answer questions?

- Sure, I'll answer any questions you got.

Sure.

- [Man] I was wondering if you could talk

a bit more about that piece over there.

- This piece here?

This piece here, it's called Black Diamond Is On MY Mind.

Black Diamond is the buffalo that's at the Bronx Zoo

and that's what was modeled after to make the Indian head

nickel, and so I thought it was really interesting

that in the United States, we eradicated all the buffalo

and then all of a sudden we look at one

and say, "Hey, that's a pretty cool-looking animal.

"Hmm, maybe we should put it on a currency,

"yeah, that's a great idea, talks about freedom,

"talks about the west, talks about all this wonderful

"expansion and the ideas that can really kinda move around,

"oh wait, we killed 'em all,

"okay well where can we go to find one?

"Well let's go to the Bronx Zoo and find one.

"Okay that sounds good," so instead of finding one

out in nature, maybe going out to Wyoming

and seeing one in its natural habitat,

seeing where its actual space is, no we go to the zoo,

it's in the chain link fence, poor thing's sitting there,

miserable, okay, we'll draw that,

and we'll put that baby on the coin.

So that's kinda my idea, also goes in with this notion

of liberty, you're not really free

when you're sitting in this kind of cage.

- Thank you. - Thank you very much.

Too Close To The Sun | Sunburns, Mythology, and The Simpsons - Duration: 9:03.

You may notice that my face is a little more red than usual.

This past weekend I was playing beach volleyball with some friends.

There was a big tournament and I was outside for hours and hours.

And unfortunately, I got a really bad sunburn.

My face is now red, and I'm in some pain.

So, I've been thinking a lot about sunburns, about the sun, about fire, and all sorts of

other things, and in this video that is what I want to talk to you about.

I'm really excited about this video.

We're going to talk about Greek Mythology, The Simpsons, and a whole bunch of things.

My name is Jacob from jacobteacher.com.

So my experience this past weekend got me thinking about this phrase in English.

The phrase is, "too close to the sun."

And it's a phrase that is often used to talk about someone who tries to do too much of

something, and as a result something really bad happens to that person.

Now this phrase--it comes actually from Greek Mythology.

It comes from the Myth of Icarus.

I'm going to tell you a little bit about this story right now.

And I'm also going to leave a link in the description to a video--a short, 5 minute

video--that explains the myth in a little more detail than I'm going to give you today.

But basically what happens in this story--Daedalus, he was this brilliant inventor.

He designed all sorts of things.

And his inventions, they got him into a lot of trouble.

They were too powerful.

And he made one king really mad, got into a lot of trouble, and as a punishment he was

sent to live atop of a tower for the rest of his life with his son, Icarus.

Now, being the inventor that he was, he quickly thought of a way to escape.

He wanted to make wings out of birds' feathers and candle wax.

And so he made these wings that would allow him and his son, Icarus, to fly out from the

tower.

Now, he told his son, Icarus--he warned his son: They had to be careful while they were

flying.

If they flew too close to the water, the moisture from the water would go into the wings and

cause the wings to be too heavy.

And as a result they would fall into the water and drown.

If, on the other hand, they flew too high, the heat from the sun would melt the wings--it

would melt the candle wax, burn the feathers, and they would fall to their deaths.

So they had to fly in between, in the middle, between the water and the sun.

Now, they started flying.

Daedalus flew in the middle, like planned.

But his son--as soon as his son Icarus started flying he became too excited by the power

he had.

He could now fly.

He could now be like a God flying in the air.

And to many people at the bottom who were watching this flight--he did look like a God.

So Icarus flew higher and higher and higher.

His dad watched in horror.

And of course, the heat from the sun, it burned up Icarus's wings and Icarus fell to his death.

So there's this idea in Greek Mythology that when humans try and become too powerful, when

they try and do things that only Gods can do, terrible, terrible things happen and they

often pay with their lives, they lose their lives as a result.

One thing I'm often asked about as an English teacher is for recommendations for T.V. shows--English

T.V. shows to watch.

Now, one of my favorie shows of all time is "The Simpsons."

If you haven't watched The Simpsons, especially if you're learning English it is an amazing

show.

But, there's one episode in particular that I'd like to recommend, especially if you're

interested in this idea--in the Myth of Icarus.

And I'll leave information about this episode in the description of this video.

If you're not familiar with The Simpsons, there's this one character, Mr. Burns.

And Mr. Burns is that greedy, rich person who wants to own everything and just wants

to make more and more money.

He's the richest person in town and he's always trying to get more things and be wealthier.

In this episode in particular, he steals oil from other people and makes himself more and

more rich.

He makes a lot of people angry.

And to prove that he has more power than anyone else he actually wants to block out the sun

in this episode.

So he wants to create this device that will block the sun's light.

So I want to show you a clip from this episode.

Let's take a look and see how the episode ends, okay.

I want you to think while we're watching of all of the things we've been talking about,

about flying too close to the sun--and see what happens to Mr. Burns.

Oh, you all talk big--but who here has the guts to stop me?

Very well.

One last question: Have you ever seen the sunset at 3 PM?

Ay!

Once, when I was sailing 'round the Arctic-- Shut up, you!

Take one last look at the sun, Springfield!

Hey! Hey!

I've been in Reno for six weeks.

Did I miss anything?

What the?

Oh...

Ah, perpetual twilight bathed in the glow of Burns brand electricity.

Hello lamp post.

What you knowin?

I've come to watch your power flowing.

That's odd--Mr. Smithers left his jacket behind.

Woah, that's odd--principal Skinner left his mother behind.

That's odd--where's Homer, and Bart, and Lisa, and Grandpa?

After all these years things are finally starting to go my way.

I feel like celebrating.

Hey, oh it's you?

What are you so happy about?

I see.

I think you'd better drop it.

I said drop it!

Get your hands off!

Where is everybody?

Hey man, are you okay?

Won't dignify that with a response.

Now, what do you think?

Do you think Mr. Burns was flying too close to the sun?

He tries to build this device that will block out the sun.

In other words, he tries to make himself a God.

He wants to be too powerful, and what happens as a result--he gets shot.

That's all for today.

I just wanted to share that with you.

These are some things that I've been thinking about since my sunburn.

I hope that you have a wonderful day, a wonderful evening, morning--wherever you are watching

in the world.

My name is Jacob from jacobteacher.com, and hopefully in the next video when I see you

my face will be feeling (and looking) a little bit better.

Bye bye for now.

Cya later.

Why Are Chickens Funny? - Duration: 9:35.

Hi everybody. I'm Ajay Fry. Know Joke explores

the intersection between knowledge and comedy.

So let's talk about chickens!

It's estimated that there are 20 billion of

them alive right now, which is a whole

lot compared to the 7 billion people

trying to share this little planet of ours.

Chickens have become a ubiquitous

part of our cuisine, our culture and our

comedy the world over. Why?

The cuisine part is obvious enough,

they're healthier and tastier than most

other animals that we kill and eat.

The culture part may be directly linked with

comedy, so why are chickens so funny?

Some are 'cocky' sure that's no

'eggs'aturation but puns are 'poultry' humor

and 'feather' or not you may enjoy them

personally they're not the 'breast' 'yokes'

so 'pluck it' we'll get them over with and

'hatch' a plan to 'fly the coop' so we're

not 'winging it' as we investigate the

'hens and outs 'of chicken gags and learn

why 'chicks' and guys alike get so 'peckish'

for people who make them 'cluck 'el'

I know. That was 'fowl'.

Chickens & comedy cooked together long before one

was mysteriously motivated to cross the road.

So which came first the chicken...

... or the joke?

Both evolved actually. Like music,

fashion and art, the comedy we enjoy

has a great deal to do with our culture.

Or lack thereof.

There's DNA evidence that chickens evolved from dinosaurs.

Specifically the fearsome Tyrannosaurus Rex.

though the modern chicken of 2017

is more accurately a crossbreed

of the red and grey jungle fowl.

which were first domesticated roughly

10,000 years ago in Asia.

Combining things to see what works is a key

element of comedy and science.

By strapping a tail on to a chicken

a team of researchers hope to learn about

the way t-rex's may have walked.

By strapping inflated pig's bladders

or dead chickens to slap sticks for

additional comedic effect.

medieval theater performers may have unknowingly

secured chickens their place

upon the throne of comedy.

As sensibilities evolved dead chickens

were replaced with rubber chickens and

while slapstick or physical comedy is

alive and well today, the most popular

comedy challenges us through metaphor

to look at our own most absurd behaviors.

like this parody commercial from

Saturday Night Live written by Robert Smigel

and featuring the late great Phil Hartman.

"Hey Clucky! Why is the Cluckin' Chicken

so chicka-licious?"

Everybody knows it's because I'm...

"FLAME BROILED!"

"Yeowza-Yeow-Dah!"

First my heads cut off!

Heads up!

Then I'm plucked and gutted, my intestines are pulled out!

Trust me! You don't want 'em!

Weee! Look at me! I'm getting

Quartered and split!

Breast, wings, the whole nine yards!

Choppity Chop!

white royal hereabouts fizzle that's

great

Rolling Stone included that on their

list of the top 50 SNL sketches of all

time and for good reason it isn't funny

because the cartoon chicken talks like

this all oblivious to what's happening

to her

it's funny because it points out the

truth that we're oblivious at best and

indifferent at worse to the conditions

that we put upon chickens just for the

convenience of a fast-food restaurant

which is also where Dave Chappelle found

inspiration for this classic bit have

you ever had someone happened it was so

racist that you didn't even get mad he

was just like I think that was right

that was racist I was in Mississippi

doing a show and I go to the restaurant

to order some food and I say to the guy

I said I would like to have imma firin

finish my sins he says the chicken

I could not believe it but not believe

that shit

this man was absolutely right after how

did he know that I was gonna get some

chicken all these years I thought I

liked chicken because it was delicious

turns out I'm genetically predisposed to

liking chicken in the 17 years since

that joke racism has remained a

significant force in Western culture

which is why Luisi came will recently

used a classic chicken joke to continue

exploring the subject why did the

chicken cross the road

because there was a black guy walking

behind him

and he was he was nervous he was new to

the city to the chicken and he was like

I feel like he's following me but I'm

not sure this joke is not right the

chicken was raped the chicken was

definitely racist but that's chickens

chicken stir fries close down vicious

and precious you kind of can't blame

them considering that their species

murder rate is 100 at one point it was

common for all the top comics to joke

about racial stereotypes but as society

evolved the top comics like Dave

Chappelle we're telling jokes about

their own first-hand experiences with

racism and now we're telling jokes about

racists because finally they're

rightfully at the bottom of society's

power structure or at the top as we've

slowly evolved and learned how to treat

each other better we haven't been making

the same progress as stewards of our

feathered friends it used to be that the

worst day of a chicken's life was its

last when sidenote in 1945 one chicken

famously lived for 18 months without a

head when the axe missed the jugular

vein and left part of its brainstem and

one ear intact if you find that

grotesque you might be shocked to learn

that we were still using decapitation as

a method to kill people around the same

time Eugene Weidman was a German

criminal and the last person publicly

executed by guillotine in France back in

1938 and it continued to be used in

private until September 1977 the same

year that bill cosby released disco bill

a comedy album which included this song

gosh down you gotta get down

it's got to be reassuring for guys like

bill that we've stopped using the

guillotine on society it's less

desirable but for the billions of

chickens leading aimlessly on

stimulating lives locked up amongst

thousands of their siblings and modern

factory farms a swift decapitation might

sound like a sweet bit of mercy a

factory chickens life is so awful it's

almost unthinkable to joke about it but

a 2015 episode of Bojack horseman

entitled chickens does and it's nothing

short of brilliant in fact

one fan was so moved they wrote and

posted their one and only IMDB review to

say among other things it made me

question my eating habits more than

anything else has ever done before

that's what good comedy does it makes us

question ourselves and our reality and

we need it too because as the episode

points out our traditional media doesn't

challenge us nearly as much as it should

how do you respond to allegations that

factory farming is torture or cruel or

like a terrifying movie about some

strange dystopian society but in this

monster story the horrifying monsters

are us relax Tommy everything we do is

completely legal and fda-approved so

therefore it is fine I have no follow up

questions it's important to remember

that legality doesn't equal morality

slavery and segregation were once legal

and could be again if we don't protect

the progress that we made we're not just

locking up chickens like this either

today in 2017 there are hundreds of

thousands of people living in similarly

confined spaces they're not criminals

just peaceful people who ran away from

their homes and their lives because the

threat of losing their heads was

eminently real wouldn't you do the same

refugees are people just like us and the

ones who fear them and call them names

are really chicken besides nobody

cause me chicken except they're not

because chickens aren't actually chicken

it's a popular misnomer the red and gray

jungle fowl weren't bred to make tasty

egg-laying birds they were bred for

cockfighting roosters are aggressively

territorial hens are especially

protective of their broods and all

chickens are loving social animals one

study suggests they even have best

friends like we do and a sense of humor

is one of if not the most important

traits that people look for when it

comes to finding partners why because

having a sense of humor proves that

you've got other desirable qualities too

like knowledge creativity and empathy

make a joke and you also demonstrate a

bit of bravery because you're putting

yourself your perspective and morality

out there and it hurts when nobody

laughs so why are chickens funny because

we're funny we're funny and we're cruel

and we're very weird chickens are a

convenient and tasty metaphor for

ourselves

sadly the real joke about chickens is

how badly we're treating them you don't

have to be an activist to understand and

agree it isn't funny fortunately we can

all write a new joke for the chickens of

tomorrow if we can keep evolving

ourselves all we've got to do is

recognize there's a problem where we're

at and we've all got to get across to

the other side or will always be the

punchline

so humanity are we brave enough or are

we chickens they're no joke

Thanks for watching everybody.

Grave robbers steal Charlie Chaplin's body in1978 - Duration: 1:31.

In the early morning of 25 December 1977,

Charlie Chaplin died at home after suffering a fatal stroke in his sleep.

He was 88 years old.

The funeral on 27 December, was a small and private Anglican ceremony according to his wishes.

Chaplin was buried in Corsier-sur-Vevey in Switzerland.

On 1 March 1978, Chaplin's coffin was dug up and stolen from its grave by two unemployed immigrants, Roman Wardas, from Poland, and Gantcho Ganev, from Bulgaria.

The body was held for ransom in an attempt to extort money from his fourth wife Oona Chaplin.

Oona Chaplin received a ransom demand of some $600,000.

police began monitoring her phone and watching 200 phone kiosks in the region.

Oona had refused to pay the ransom, saying that her husband would have thought the demand "ridiculous."

The callers later made threats against her two youngest children.

The police immediately organized an extensive investigation which included investigators from all over Europe.

After a five-week investigation, The pair were caught in a large police operation in May,

and Chaplin's coffin was found buried in a field in the nearby village of Noville.

As for Chaplin, his family reburied his body in a concrete grave to prevent future theft attempts.
