The Physics of Falling Back in your Chair - Duration: 6:42.

It's Friday afternoon, and you just sent your last email of the day.

Your eyes move around the room and you slowly exhale, leaning back just one…

tiny… inch and [crash].

It's happened to all of us, and there's a simple explanation to why something so clumsy

can sneak up on you.

I'm Grady, and this is Practical Engineering.

On today's episode, we're talking about static stability, or the study of objects

at rest, and how far is too far to lean back in your chair.

One thing I love about engineering is that it gives us the tools to communicate concepts

that we already know through intuition.

It's second nature to us that pushing on this block will cause it to fall down, or

that tall, narrow objects aren't very stable.

Even cats can grasp this.

Statics allows us to take our intuitions one step further and answer specific questions

like how hard can I push this before it falls down, or how narrow can this be before it's

unbalanced.

Engineers use the same methods to answer questions like how many trucks can this bridge support,

and how heavy does a dam need to be to resist the pressure of all that water?

It all starts with Newton's Second Law, which says that a net force on an object will

cause it to accelerate.

Well, we don't want our roads, bridges, dams, and buildings to accelerate.

In fact, the job description of a structural engineer is essentially just to make sure

that acceleration doesn't occur.

So to keep things static, we need we need to balance our forces.

Here's a simple example of how this works.

Imagine an object is floating in space… any object will do.

How about a classic square?

Applying a force to this object would cause it to accelerate.

If you're an aerospace engineer, your job is finished here, but in civil engineering

terms, acceleration is bad news.

So, we can add another force to make the net force acting on the object zero.

We've achieved static equilibrium, which means we keep our job for another day.

Stay with me because now it gets fun.

What if I take the two forces on this object and adjust them so they are not inline with

one another.

The sum of the two forces is still zero, but you intuitively know that this object is not

going to be static.

It's going to spin.

A rotational force is known as a moment or torque.

Here's another intuition you already have: torque is the product of the force and its

distance from the center of rotation.

So a small force with a long lever arm is equivalent to a large force with a small lever

arm.

Static equilibrium requires not only that net forces be zero, but also that the moments

be zero as well.

And that's really all there is to it.

For an object to be at rest, you simply have to satisfy these two conditions.

Static analysis involves adding up all of the forces and moments on an object and making

sure they sum to zero.

So, let's take our newfound knowledge and apply it to a situation we've all been in.

But first we need a chair.

We all lean back in our chairs.

To recline is human, I think, and leaning back satisfies not just our need to relax,

but sometimes a way to combat boredom.

But occasionally the lean is mean, and chances are at least once or twice you've pushed

the limits a little too far and fallen right over backwards.

How can we be so clumsy?

It turns out that leaning back in your chair has a very subtle point of no return, and

we can see how it works through static analysis.

For our purposes, we can assume however hard your body pushes down on the ground, the ground

pushes up to match it.

So, the forces in this system are always balanced.

But let's look at the moments.

Your point of rotation is the back legs of the chair, and gravity pulling on your body

is generating a moment about this point of rotation.

A human's center of gravity while sitting is somewhere in front of their belly button.

With no other forces in the system, you can see that your weight would generate a moment

that would rotate your forward.

But, when we lean back in our chairs, we use our feet for support.

Your feet and legs create an equal but opposite moment about the point of rotation to keep

you static.

One of the first things you learn in statics is that you can't push a rope.

In other words, a rope can act in tension, but it's pretty useless in compression.

In exactly the same way, your feet can push on the ground, but unless you have been bitten

by a radioactive spider (or recently stepped in chewing gum), they can't pull on the

floor beneath you.

Watch what happens in our diagram as you continue to lean back further and further.

As soon as your center of gravity passes over the point of rotation, the moment that it

creates reverses.

But, unlike before, there is no way to use your feet to counteract this rotation because

they can't pull on the ground.

All of the sudden, our moments aren't balanced.

You can kick your legs forward to try and move your center of gravity.

You can wave your arms to try and counter-rotate using conservation of angular momentum.

You can even try whatever Beyonce used at the Grammy's this year.

But more than likely, if you've made it this far, there's no going back.

Well, actually there's only going back.

You're going to fall.

It might seem silly, but this is the exact same type of analysis engineers use every

day to design anything that's meant not to move.

A perfect example is a crane.

Lifting heavy objects and moving them about is just like leaning back in a chair because

they both have the same effect of shifting the system's center of gravity.

Some cranes even have sensors to monitor to the pressure on the outriggers and make sure

that center of gravity never gets on the wrong side of the point of rotation.

Statics is a fundamental skill that is broadly applicable not only to engineers, but anyone

who has anything that needs to stay put (even if it's just their own butt).

An Open Letter to the People of Planet Earth

As I woke up this morning I was overwhelmed with sadness, I reached out to my higher self

to ask what is wrong and what this feeling was.

The message was that the time has come to be open and honest about who I am, about who

we really are.

Many will find this letter upsetting and will perceive it as �We, the Galactic�s think

we are above you or better than you�.

That is far from the truth I am writing this letter because our divine mother and father

of creation is crying today, especially our mother because her heart is aching for her

children.

An ache and deep sadness because she feels so helpless.

Any mother who loves her children and sees them hurting each other; knowing that there

is nothing she can do to help anymore, is a pain no mother wants to feel; no parent

wants to see their children suffer.

I have incarnated on planet earth and have taken off my wings to help you, the people

of earth.

Whether anyone wants to believe this or not is totally a matter of choice.

I am one of the highest commanding officers that serve on the Galactic Federation of light,

but I have an earth vessel in this incarnation and I have chosen to incarnate into an experience

we in the galactic realms would consider a living hell.

I have chosen this experience to aid in the release of the karma of planet earth that

have been accumulated for eons.

As a child, I was abused my entire life by the woman who helped me to enter this world,

she neglected me and physically abused me.

However, because of our souls, we love unconditionally.

Having this kind of love can be a punishment in a way that it hurts so much being treated

so badly by the person you love more than anything, but it can also be the greatest

gift we are all capable of receiving, the gift of unconditional love.

And because I was abused as a child I married a man that was not physically abusive, but

emotionally abusive to me and I had children with him.

I lived my entire human life until my awakening, experiencing abuse to transmute the karma

and for all to move forward and ascend.

Now that I have fully awakened and this cycle is completed I feel compelled to share more

news with all of you.

Even though I suffered this abuse I chose love.

I chose to love my mother even though she abused me and I have forgiven her and I have

also forgiven my ex-husband and I pray for them every day because to find God is within

all of us.

God is love and if we all come back to love the world we live in can change.

We all want to live in a better world but no one is taking responsibility for anything.

The human condition is as such that they always think someone else will intervene to save

this planet.

There is only guidance but there will be no interference without consent.

If the Galactic�s or external forces intervene will we be accepted in peace or will humans

fight to protect what they have created on this planet.

Will you be open to help and not react with greed?

Let me tell you what life is like in our realm, we honour all life with consciousness.

No life force is destroyed in anything we do.

We are essene fruitarians, what does this mean?

This means that we eat only what grows from the trees and from the ground.

Even if we pick our fruits, seeds and crops we do not destroy the life force because we

understand that we are all connected.

We give thanks to our planet and all plants that we can share with.

Our vibration is always high so we do not need to eat as much.

We do not eat our animals, we honour them because they are in harmony with the planet

we consider them our teachers.

We all help each other in everything we do.

We work to maintain our planet and to live in harmony with mother nature, we do not work

to make money.

It hurts us to see that humans think they need money to help each other.

All these things that have been created on earth will cause destruction.

Humans destroy everything.

You kill your animals and then you have created packaging to contain the meat.

All the packaging for things you do not really need and you throw this on your beloved planet

that you think you own.

You are not even capable of creating technologies that can destroy all the plastic you have

made.

We live to preserve our consciousness and that of the planet.

We only take from our plants and the earth what we need and we prepare our food the same

time as we pick them and we say thank you.

We live in gratitude with each other and we honour each being�s gifts.

We are all beings of consciousness, we all have different shapes and sizes from all over

the galaxy.

We honour each other�s unique gifts, like a rainbow there is all different colours no

colour is better than the other but together they form a beautiful rainbow.

That is how we live in the entire galaxy.

We do not need money as we are aware of how powerful we are, we are creators, but here

on Earth you are destroyers.

How can you all kill each other, you do not think?

All of you are being told what to do and no one questions these atrocious acts.

You honour your soldiers, what are they fighting for?

The people you allow to control you make you believe that you own your country, the area

you claim ownership of on the different parts of this planet.

And whoever sets foot on your piece of land is an immigrant, and these people are perceived

as a threat because you do not want to share your resources.

And you honour the soldiers who go and kill these people in their own piece of land and

create wars because of your greed.

Why are those people not welcome in your countries or your land?

No one owns this planet she is a being and she is consciously evolving.

The men on your planet rape and abuse women, In the galactic realms, the feminine is honoured

because without the feminine there can be no life.

Those of you who are aware of the evolution of this planet is a step ahead.

As we proceed to the 5th dimension, there can be no space for the 3rd dimension energy.

Yes, to live in the 5th dimension is blissful, because only love can exist in this higher

dimension.

What everyone does not realise is that not all can exist in this dimension.

Will lives be lost?

Yes, sadly it will, this will be a time of great cleanse.

Ego, fear, greed, hatred, these are all 3rd dimension energies and there is so much more

that needs to go that is considered of a lower fear based dimension.

The most important thing is to forgive those who have lied to you and for those who have

abused you.

Forgiveness does not mean that we are saying it is ok to be treated in a bad way, it simply

means you are liberating yourself to move on.

And then the next choice we can make is to live a conscious life where we honour ourselves

and every other being including our beloved Gaia.

To love ourselves enough to see ourselves as part of an entire family, part of a collective

where we can live in harmony with all.

To be awake does not mean we are better than anyone else, it means we have a bigger responsibility.

There are the ones who are awake or claim they are that still judge those who are trapped.

We cannot wait for anyone to change the fate of humanity, we are responsible for this.

If no one wants to take responsibility who will?

Our mother is in pain she is suffering, she is crying because she feels like she is helpless.

Everyone is waiting for the event; the event is nothing like you are all imagining.

It is time we act; the time is now to look within.

We can make a difference starting today.

If we all decide to act in kindness to every person we meet, than we can make a difference.

There is enough for all on this planet, if we live to preserve our vibration, the vibration

of Love the world can change tremendously.

We will become creators of this planet; our goal should not be to make money but rather

to look after each other and our planet.

Mother earth can provide us with all we need, no human being is above another.

AppyPie Review - A tasty app maker? - Duration: 4:41.

Hi and welcome to this AppToolTester review of AppyPie.

AppyPie proudly displays the number of apps they helped build on their landing page.

They have also ramped up their marketing efforts recently, with TV ads and a number of interesting

claims, saying you can build apps like Uber or Tinder clones.

Well, let's see if they're really the right solution for creating your next iOS

or Android app.

So, AppyPie lets you get started right off the bat, without even signing in.

Name your app and select a category.

We tried a few different options, but they don't change much except the uninspiring

stock photos in the live preview.

You can import content from a Facebook page or a website, but we'll skip that for now.

Choosing a theme is usually the fun part of making an app.

Unfortunately, AppyPie's 15 templates all look a little bit dated.

The customization options are ok.

Still hard to end up with a stunner, no matter how long we spent tweaking them.

The next big bulk of the app creation takes place in the section called App Pages.

This is where you add the features and there are a lot of them!

But do not be fooled - this is our biggest problem with AppyPie.

Ok, so if you want to add a link to your website, Facebook or Twitter page, it's great.

For example, just click on the Twitter Page and fill in your information.

It's just as easy to add things like a local map or, say, a quizz.

You can rearrange pages and delete them easily.

The e-commerce support is also pretty good.

You can link to a number of platforms such as Shopify or Etsy.

Moreover, AppyPie lets you create a simple in-app store where you can later add products,

payment information and categories.

Be aware that certain features require you to enter information in the App dashboard.

This is not intuitive, because you won't know where it is straight away.

But the biggest problem we have with AppyPie is the following: let's say we want to check

out this interesting Augmented Reality feature.

We click on it and --- what??

Same thing with a Taxi App.

Or a Dating App.

As you can see, they always rely on 3rd party solutions.

And AppyPie isn't exactly clear on how to get them to work.

If, however, you manage to try all the features you want.

You can then move to the Build tab which first takes you to the pricing page.

There is a free option that comes with ads.

Note that you can only edit a free app during the first 24 hours.

The Basic option costs $15 a month but doesn't let you build for iOS.

For $30 a month, you can publish to iOS, Android and HTML5.

Finally, the $50 a month plan lets you publish to all of the above plus Windows phones, Blackberry

and even Fire OS for Kindle tablets.

Once you've chosen your plan, you can finally access that mysterious dashboard.

Here it's easy to publish your app or test it.

You can download it to your phone using a link or by scanning a QR code.

As we mentioned earlier, some of AppyPie's tutorials leave a lot to be desired.

However, their live chat support was pretty good, and questions we asked via email were

answered within 24 hours.

So in the end, is AppyPie as impressive as they think they are?

Well, it is very easy to use.

Which makes it a good option for:

very basic information apps

unsophisticated stores

small businesses who want to offer, for example, reward options and delivery services

However, you shouldn't think you'll be able to build the next killer app.

The designs are not modern or exciting, and all the apps look more or less the same

Advanced features are not that easy to integrate, and offer the bare minimum in terms of usability,

which...

… wouldn't be so bad if their tutorials were a bit more in-depth.
