Running After 50! How to start a Running, Jogging or Walking Program after 50! - Duration: 7:52.

Join us today and learn how to take the

first steps towards taking charge of

your health and fitness by starting a

running program! thanks so much for

tuning into 2nd Act TV I am so happy

to have one of my running buddies on the

show today Chris thanks for joining us!

thanks Silke, so glad to be here yeah Chris you

might have seen him on that on previous

episodes of 2nd Act TV he's been

very helpful to our program in many ways

but the reason we're talking to Chris

today is because we are starting our

virtual running club our 2nd act

virtual running club Chris along with

the you know a handful of other people

that I met when I started my new life in

California is really a shining example

of what running can do in somebody's

life you started running again seriously

after you had a heart attack

back in 2006 like I ran in high

school and college competitively I took

a very long break and gained a lot of

weight raised a family and did all the

wrong made all the wrong health choices

so I had a heart attack, your body will

eventually tell you when you're doing

things wrong you know I left the

hospital literally what came home and

started walking and I was in July 2006

and in November 2006 I ran my first 5k

race and then by 2008 I've run my first

full marathon yeah and you've been doing

marathons, you've run New York and you

I mean you're incredible and I can't

even talking to you now I can't imagine

you overweight and a heart attack that

that's and that's why I really love your

story of why I wanted to have you on

here as we as we launch the running club

because there's a lot of people out

there in your shoes and maybe don't know

what to do or or have the courage to

start it is somewhat courageous let's

talk about that ... the first step is always

the hardest for sure you know I think

about them think about my sister-in-law

who just turned 60 a few months ago and

I remember pushing her around Walt

Disney World in the wheelchair and she I

just had fusion surgery and the discs in

her neck and you know

you could almost feel her whining her

life down and she made a decision one

day to start ran as far she could what

she told me wasn't very far a

quarter-mile and now she's she's run

literally probably a hundred half

marathons ... that's crazy ... and including the a

10k half marathon double every year that

occurs in Disneyland out in California

which I'll join it for this year and

she's at sixty - she continues to get

faster continues to be motivated her

doctor actually was amazed because some

she had um whenever you have surgery

like this you have osteoporosis and it

becomes very advanced very quickly and

it's actually reversed itself because of

her fitness and the thing is is that I'm

certain she would have benefited from a

running group like but when you're

starting because she didn't you know at

first she didn't even know how to

basically get going and the decision was

made that she's going to to improve her

fitness and turn her life around but she

didn't have any kind of direction

through which to go

well we want to provide both direction

you know how to do it but also break

down the myths as to why or that you can

I should I should say so many people

think they can't do it that they're too

old or that it'll hurt their joints or

their knees that it's bad for you and

that just isn't true there is a very

safe way to do it that will actually

help your joints versus hurt them

correct I agree with you completely you

know the first thing people say to me

all the time is when you when you run is

like oh that's really bad to your knees

right but the truth is and then you know

this is that it's actually better for

your knees than not running, you talk

about starting and people say well I'm

overweight well guess what you know walk

then, yes ... well

that's what we're encouraging we're

actually calling it the the our first

our inaugural run is a 5k virtual run

walk and the thing is everybody every

runner I know has a story as to why they

run what it's done for them it truly is

just so inspirational to hear the

stories not of the elite athletes and we

I think this a lot and my friend Cindy

she said that very profoundly in an

interview we did with her Cindy who you

know of course is

that forget about the people that come

across the finish line first or second

look at the ones that come in last or

the last group those are amazing stories

it's quite a community and you know the

people that are middle or last whatever

they've defeated some things too, they've

defeat their fear starting they

defeated you know some health issues

they've defeated type-2 diabetes

they've defeated all these things, isn't

it a better victory when you think about

it in the long run

absolutely there's a lot of people that

might be on the fence or they say hear

us talking about, and say Oh God how can you enjoy

running I mean what what do you say to

somebody that think that they can't or

are too old to run ... first of all the you

know that that's the thing you know

you're never too old to run there's

people who are a hundred years old it's

still do it

yeah and and if I can do it anybody can

do it you know I left the hospital

literally what came home and started

walking and you know perhaps maybe you

don't run it first

perhaps you you walk it first and then

as you get used to it you'll you'll

naturally migrate into moving faster

it's just the way we're built the one

thing I can point out is it does not

matter how old you are doesn't matter

your level of fitness doesn't matter if

you've ever run or participated in the

sport ever in your life just just get

out there there's a much smaller smaller

barrier to running than people think

they all think that you know in the one

thing that is that is really a misnomer

is that people think well look at all

these people do they're athletic or

running or fit I'm not fit I'm not

athletic I'm not going to do that, I'll

embarrass myself

reality is that every single person

almost without feel failed it starts

felt the same way and then you realize

guess what we're just ordinary people

that spend our Saturday mornings running

instead of sitting on the couch or or

sleeping in exactly well Chris thank you

thank you so much, our time is kind of

coming to an end quickly here already

but what are some of the biggest words of

encouragement that you can give to

someone to get you know that we can do

it? I'll give three I'll give three small

pieces of advice, one don't be afraid, two

get a buddy, two is always better than

one

and three and probably the most

important thing is but don't put too

high goals for yourself right away make

realistic goals , yeah just start you know

and say my goal today is to run a quarter

mile maybe an eighth of a mile um a half

mile a mile after that but but don't get

overwhelmed by having to do something

faster or better or anything else

because really not about that. Chris I

thank you again for you know joining

joining in this conversation and helping

me kick off the 2nd act runners Club

and I'm really going to look forward to

you chiming in and one thing that I want

to close with is to let people know you

know we really care about how you do and

we want to hear your stories, and your

success stories, and we look forward to

to seeing

you on another episode of 2nd Act TV

Chris thanks for joining me! my pleasure

I hope you found today's discussion

helpful and that you'll join us at 2nd

Act Runners Club. Please visit our

The 100 4x12 Inside "The Chosen" (HD) Season 4 Episode 12 Inside - Duration: 2:19.

- You call this justice?

- I call this making things right.

Thanks to my brother.

- 4.12 is called The Chosen

it was written by Ginsberg and McIntire, Aaron & Wade.

- How many of us have to die?

- You're lucky it's not all of you.

- Lucky?

- In the bunker, Bellamy figured out a way

to get the door open.

- We have a hundred spots.

- We have over four times that.

- A pain that all clans feel.

- Octavia will allow for Sky Crew to choose their survivors.

Just like every other clan got to choose their survivors.

As a result every clan will survive the death wave.

A hundred of each.

- I can't believe that we are talking about sending 364

of our own people to their death.

- We're lucky they're giving us

any space in this bunker at all.

- Look, I don't like it anymore than you do.

- Then let's fight this.

- We see the consequences of that play out.

How are they going to select down,

from 400 or so people who are now surviving

inside that bunker, who believe that they had made it.

Who believe that they had found a way to ride out this

five year nightmare.

Now they have to leave the bunker. 300 of them.

- Until 20 minutes ago our people believed they were safe.

They let down their guard, they picked their bunks,

they unpacked their bags, they imagined their futures.

You try to rip that from them now

and believe me, they will fight.

- It's devastating for Jaha, whose whole life

is dedicated to saving his people.

He found the bunker, he stole the bunker,

he had them all inside.

And now he has to face the reality of losing 300 people.

How do you choose?

And so really, really powerful episode.

Really big choices to be made for all of our characters.

- You have until midnight. Choose or you all die.

(dramatic music)

UC Santa Cruz Special Report: Cancer Research (Treehouse Childhood Cancer Initiative) - Duration: 3:46.

- Treehouse Childhood Cancer Initiative

is an effort to identify new treatment options

for children with difficult to treat cancers.

I think UC Santa Cruz is really the only place

where we could have Treehouse

because our strength is big data

and big data bioinformatics.

And so we search for patterns that make

this particular child's tumor

similar to another tumor that already

has a treatment option.

So we're not discovering new drugs,

but we are what's called repositioning

an existing drug from another cancer patient

to this child.

Usually for difficult cases,

there is a group of physicians that get together

to discuss the case and decide

on the best course of treatment,

so the unique thing now is that we're invited

to these tumor boards to provide our view on the case,

to provide our analysis and our view

from the genomics side

that could be used by the clinicians

and could be further discussed in these tumor boards.

And that's a pretty unique thing.

We're very very excited and honored

to actually be invited.

When I came here to UC Santa Cruz,

I found out that there was a staff member at the time,

Katrina Learned, who was working

for the Genome Browser Group,

and Katrina's daughter Aurora just completed

treatment for a childhood cancer called neuroblastoma.

- When she was first diagnosed with cancer something

that we were waiting to hear with like baited breath

was whether she had intermediate risk neuroblastoma

or high risk neuroblastoma.

It was a huge thing to figure out and to find out.

And when we found out that she had intermediate risk

and that she was gonna be okay.

That if we went through everything,

she was gonna be okay.

I just knew that if I had gotten the other news

that she had high risk,

if that she had maybe 60 to 75%,

actually 60 to 65% survival rate after five years,

it would have been devastating.

My dream at that moment was that every person

whose child gets diagnosed with cancer

would be to have that hope and that expectation

that there will be a cure and their child will be cured.

- We started with no funding.

We were really a group of volunteers,

and then we gradually got support

from local advocacy groups including some gift money

from Unravel Pediatric Cancer and others.

And we got a grant from Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

We won the California Initiative to Advance

Precision Medicine, which is an initiative

by Governor Brown.

We're very honored to get selected

as one of the demonstration projects,

and then that really paved the way for us

to win the $2.5 million grant

from St. Baldrick's Foundation.

And that is one of the largest grants

that they actually have,

and we are really really honored to receive that

at UC Santa Cruz.

- After we got the St. Baldrick's grant,

we decided we wanted to give back.

So Treehouse decided to do our own head shaving event

in honor of St. Baldrick's.

And when I heard about the event,

I knew I wanted to participate.

So I set a goal for myself of raising $10,000

to shave my head,

and I surpassed that goal and ended up raising $14,000

for St. Baldrick's.

And our whole team, everybody combined,

raised over $28,000.

- I think it is pretty unique

that we don't have a medical center here on campus,

and yet we can provide insight that could be used

by clinicians to help patients.

And I think it is actually an advantage

to the type of work that we do

because what we're doing is we're doing analysis

and providing information that we learn

from these comparisons to the clinicians

that can make a treatment decision.

- I am so excited about what this group is doing.

I'm just so optimistic that this group

is gonna make a huge difference

in the space of pediatric cancer.

I just know it.
