Hello and a warm welcome to a new Review by Autophorie.de
Today we're in lovely bavaria and driving a perfect car for this circumstances
But no it's not a tractor yet a car perfectly set up for a family trip intro the country
And with that, a warm welcome to the new BMW 5 Series Estate
Well yes this wasn't the best transition, yet everyone knows the experience sitting in the back of the car for hours as a kid
And yes the BMW 5 Series is the perfect fit for families with a lot of luggage
More elegant than my transition is the Estate itself
The one we have here is based on the "luxury line" and therefore in the more uncles looking style
As always we start with the design cues
The front fascia makes it 100% clear this is BMW with the big double grille or kidneys
The inner parts of the kidneys are actively closing and opening in terms of CO2-Emissions or air cooling
However there is more such as the close by headlights which are now connected to the kidneys
With that in mind the car looks wider and more solid on the road
By looking at the side there we have the 18inch wheels at first hand - standard with the luxury line -
However the luxury line can be equipped with 19inch as well, the 5 Series Estate has rim options from 17 to 20inch
With the Luxury line we get a lot of chrome parts, such as the frame around the side windows
Yet there is another chrome part such as the air breather down here, which is not for good looks but for aerodynamics improvement
At the back there is of course a big trunk but let's take a look at this first
Because as always there is the rear window that could be opened without opening the whole trunk
New to the 5 Series Estate is the optional opener with a simple kick of the foot underneath the boot
The trunk capacity is from 570 to 1.700 liters if all the seats are folded down
And the 5 Series Estate can load up to 730kgs
A nice feature to me is that we can also close the boot with a kick of the foot
For the launch on Germany there are only four engines available such as the 540i, 530d, 530i and the one we have here 520d
The 520d is a four cylinder diesel with rear-wheel-drive optional 8-speed-automatic (standard 6-speed-manual)
The power output is rated at 190hp, torque is at 400 Nm and the fuel consumption should be about 4.2 l/100km
All four engines mentioned can pull up to 2 tonnes
And the Estate in all cases has a standard air suspension at the rear axle to keep a constant level no matter how much is loaded
In our case the car is equipped with the optional adaptive dampers that you may know already from the BMW 540i Sedan Review
There have been a few question concerning the engines
Will there be a BMW M5 Estate?
Maybe there will be one, maybe there won't because there are two answers to that question
Frank van Meel stated in an Interview that an BMW M3 Touring makes no sense in the specific market, so maybe a M5 Touring has more "sense"
However the BMW M5 Sedan is primarily sold in the United States and they simple don't care that much for Estates
Another question was if there will be a 5 Series Estate Hybrid
So far the BMW 5 Series Estate is not planned as a Hybrid Model, Plug-in Hybrid to be more precise
And that is because a PHEV is primarily sold outside of Europe, so there is no case for a Europe Estate to be built as PHEV
Welcome inside the 5 Series Estate, we start with a look into the second row where Fabian with his height of 1.80m takes a seat
As you can see there is more than enough space for him in the back
According to BMW there is enough space for three booster seats, however there are only two ISOFIX preparations
Now let's get to the details of the interior such as the materials
WE don't have much time, so if you like to go into more detail there is another review of the Sedan which is more into that
You will find that link down below
In general we have more or less the same colors in this bright brown look
Let's get to the cognac style leather of the armrest and the seats
The processing of the seats at all is very good, with this dark stitching and the grey highlights
The seats itself are not typical BMW, more comfortable than you would expect them to be and less sporty
Another material is dark dashboard next to the black gloss panel topped up with a metal looking element separating it to the brown leather
The center console is dominated by the 10.25inch touchscreen that can also be operated by voice commands or gesture control and the iDrive Controller
I prefer this gesture for the sound controls
Furthermore the entertainment could be controlled by touch or the iDrive Controller, such as your voice
Personally I was amazed by the key that can do so many things with its touch interface
BMW is known for its straight six cylinder engines, however they also make great straight four cylinder engines such as as this one
The diesel engine is - typical BMW - enjoyable to drive because of its natural rev mentality
Yet there is beside the comfort mode also the sport mode which we're choosing now
The instance change in throttle response and revving is just pure BMW
The Setting of the adaptive dampers inside the Estate is different from the setting we already know from the Sedan
Therefore the Estate is more comfortable to drive than the Sedan, yet it is still pretty much BMW and so dynamic!
For instance on the motorway it is gentle and soft, yet on the country road it is dynamic, agile and fun
In generel the BMW 5 Series Estate is more quiet than before, more enjoyable and less demanding on longer trips
There was one key aspect that was a little bit negative to my mind in the Sedan, I'm going to alter that now
It was about the Harman/Kardon Soundsystem, which is actually a great fit for the Estate because it works well with the cabin and maybe there has been some changes to the software
Now we're on the motorway, and yes that BMW 520d Touring will go easy above 220kph on open roads
Yet this part is about the driving assistance systems in the 5 Series available
There is the lane keeping assist, the cruise control which we'll set with the click wheel, the cancel-button, the distance button and the limiter
We're drivng a 100kph zone and I active the cruise control, which is then set to the current speed of the car
Currently we're driving 101kph, with a simple switch on the button we can set it to the allowed 100kph
The navigation displays already that there is a 80kph zone coming so, with another klick we can set it already to the allowed setting
I like that feature quite much because it helps you save money on speeding tickets.
Of course you have to react on the helping features the car is offering you in the head-up display, which is just great btw
Now I'm activating the steering assist, so there is autonomous driving right around the corner however it's not yet allowed in Germany
So I'm obligated to keep the hands on the steering, yet I like to show you how well the system works
It steers back into the center by itself, which works perfectly
Because we're entering a slight left turn the steering assist has to adjust a little
The system itself is nearly as good as the one in the E-Class out of Stuttgart
Now we're driving between some yellow lines (Road works) and entering another white line, let's see what the systems are doing
And yes the system changes back in between the while lines (end of road works)
Starting with Level 4 autonomous driving we may relax while driving on the motorway
There is also a lane change assist, which works by initiating a change of lanes by pulling the indicator
The sensors in the back check if the left lane is free and then turn over to make the lane change with a slight help of steering angle
Now again: in front of us is a lorry, the cruise control decelerates and we'd like to change lanes
And by setting the turn indicator the systems will react, speed up the car and change lanes if it's safe to move over
Estate Country Germany your next BMW 5 Series is ready for you
Now it's also up to you if you prefer the 5 Series or the E-Class?
Both cars couldn't be more different, the E-Class is the more comfortable even more spacious car
And the 5 Series on the other is the more dynamic car even with the small four cylinder diesel Engine
And yet BMW changed the 5 Series to make it more comfortable inside the cabin
And with all the options and of course the adaptive dampers, this 5 Series Estate is quite the dynamic one
