Hi everyone, today I give you the 9 shows you must see
this Fall in Paris !
I only chose shows that have never been performed in Paris before
No revivals… almost
Let's start in septembre with Jan Fabre
Mount Olympus, To Glorify the Cult of Tragedy, a 24 hours performance
[He says the title in French…]
This is the theatrical marathon of the year
Only one performance, at la Villette on Friday, September the 15th at 7p.m.
Until Saturday 7 p.m. because it's a 24 hours show…
Mount Olympus is a huge show with 27 performers of 4 different generations
an extraordinary show but not only because of the duration
Because if there is a stage director who loves to step outside the framework and break the rules
It is Jan Fabre !
The guy has a « Controversy » tab on his Wikipedia page !
Mount Olympus, I'll sum it up with a quote that I love
It was written by Rosita Boisseau in the newspaper Le Monde
Welcome to the Greeks, lead us to say that it's going to twerk
to fuck everywhere, murder everyone and let the blood spew !
Not my words !
Next, dance with Jérôme Bel
GALA - 4 to 15 october at théâtre du rond-point and then everywhere
in Ile-de-France. The calendar is on the website
of the festival d'automne
Yes I know Gala has been performed in Nanterre in 2015...
I know…
But Jérôme Bel is the focus artist of The Festival d'Automne this year
So we must talk about him
I chose Gala but there is 9 shows, 1 in video
that you can see this Fall during the Festival d'Automne
Jérôme Bel is became famous for directing non-professional people on stage
non-professional is maybe not the right word This is people that
you would never see on stage usually
Last time for me was at Opéra Garnier
He made a woman in a wheelchair dancing
the very classical part of Gisèle. Then in the show Disabled Theater,
He worked with people who have Down syndrom.
Gala is a show that mix-up all his influences.
A show in which non-professionals, professionals and people from every ages and every countries
met on stage to perform the same choreography.
Dance mouvements are sometimes wrong or not well executed
But that's the way it is and it is part of the show.
This Fall if it's not Gala I advise you to go to see almost
on of the Jérôme Bel's shows or all…
from 5 to 8 october at Centre Pompidou
For the Festival d'automne I recommend you the show To Come (extended)
by Mette Ingvartsen
Mette Ingvartsen is a choreographer that use sexuality as a material
It is always in a very strong aethetic
The sexual mouvement become a dance mouvement
But it is not only that !
Not only a mecanical variation of the sexual act
Mette Ingvartsen is one of those choreographers that work as a dramaturge
She brings in her dance a lot of meaning and subtexts
Because what she does as an upstream work can be compared to sociology
To Come is a show that she created in 2005 but she reworked on it
with the researches she made for …
To Come is a show that she created in 2005 when she was 25
Here it is a reworked version of the show With the researches she made
for her next show that will be called 21 pornographie
But also the researched she had made for 7 Pleasures a show I saw
It was a big crush Such an intensity
You know when you have the chills !
You wonder if you're not having an orgasm !
4th shows of the Fall with the KING ROMEO CASTELLUCCI !
Democracy in America from 12 to 22 october at MC93 for the Festival d'Automne
Actually if there is a Castellucci you go to see the Castellucci
Don't ask questions, you brush your teeth, you clean up your room and you go to see the Castellucci
I say !
It is not that I can't look critically at a show of Castellucci
No, but it is always something very new
When I am in front of a Castellucci's play, I never thought
"I already seen this !" I don't know, go and see, that's it !
Democracy in America is an free adaptation - very free - of Tocqueville's book
free because it is a significant and profuse book
Because Castellucci keep in Tocqueville's book the way he questions the democracy
to define it nowadays
How this democracy, 2 centuries old, can still make sens in Europe and America ?
Still at Festival d'Automne
Sorry not sorry
The show Unwanted by Dorothée Munyaneza from 18 to 21 October
At théâtre du Monfort and then in november at le 104 and in Pantin !
It is part of the shows I didn't succeed to see during the Festival d'Avignon
Unfortunatly So I'll run to the Monfort to see it !
WHY ?
Because the people who saw it were upset
Because Dorothée Munyaneza knows well the subject
She was there during the 1994 Tutsi genocide in Rwanda, she was only 12 years old
Because she came back to Rwanda to collect testimony from
women who have been raped, the rape as a war weapon
it is a huge work and precious work
Because the testimony she had collected, she doesn't deliver them only as a text
She delivers it in a physical way : I quote her
The fight, the struggle, the gestures of manifestations the danger
The trauma printed on the body
the body's memory of the violence, that is what I care about
also the way this violence can be seen, felt
to the upper tips of the fingers, in the eyes, in the feet
Still dance, Jan Martens, Rule of Three !
It is from 9 to 15 novembre at 'espace Pierre Cardin, it means Théâtre de la Ville
with the festival d'Automne.
He is my favorite !
"The dog days are over" I was ecstatic
It is the show in which they jump... all the time
"Ode to the Attempt", I was in love
It is the one in which he was dancing with the willy out of his pants
So Rule of Three, I'll go there without a doubt
I don't even know what is it about ! You know what is it ? No ? Me neither
He is so good at surprising you, creating snaps. It cannot be boring.
Jan Martens let you think that you know what's gonna happen
and when it goes very clear in your head - HOP !
he catches you by surprise Buy your ticket for Jan Martens this is an order !
Next from 10 november to 22 december at théâtre de l'odéon and not at the festival d'automne !
we go to see the Simon Stone's version of The Three Sister by Chekhov
His first time in France was Thieste at the Amandiers in Nanterre
Then there was Medea at Théâtre de l'Odéon, only a couples of days
And this summer Ibsen Huis at Festival d'Avignon
So he is not very famous in France, but known for his talent
at Odéon the show will be "Les Trois Soeurs" based on Chekhov play
With Simon Stone it is always "based on", he rewrites everything
The show was created in german at Theater Basel in Switzerland
At Odéon it will be the same scenography but with french actors
I can't wait to see what's gonna be the vision of his version of the play
The scenography of les Trois Soeurs
will be something very close - very very close
of what the scenography of Ibsen House was, so I hope this will not be the squeaky wheel...
Because the house needs to turn... without squeaking [The joke was hard to translate]
Here we are in december from 7 to 16 at Les Amandiers
a play by Gisèle Vienne CROWD with the Festival d'Automne
each time Gisèle Vienne has a new show
I'm surprised because it is always very different from the previous time
in the form I mean, cause in the substance
There is a continuity in the way she studies how violence can happen
In the show This is how you will disappear, it was like an art installation
of a forest, contemplative, few words, and the few words there were
strange in the diction
In the show The Ventriloquists Convention there was a lot of text
It was more realistic, it dealt with the pathetism of the characters and of the situations
In CROWD, she'll analyze mechanisms of the Party
The party is an universal event, but that have different cultural practices or codes
She questions the function of ritual and the sacred in the party
and how violence can happen inside the party
At each shows of Gisèle Vienne I was surprised and fascinated
She is now one of the artist I don't want to miss the work
Last but not least
Oh non be ready, this is clearly not a "least"
Vincent Macaigne - En Manque from 14 to 22 december
by Festival d'Automne at Théâtre de la Ville
But Théâtre de la Ville is currently undergoing renovation so it's not at Théâtre de la Ville
Nore at l'espace Pierre Cardin neither at théâtre des abbesses,
No it's somewhere else at la Villette, and you must know that Vincent Macaigne has 2 others shows in Nanterre
if you go in the wrong theatre I would totally understand !
We didn't see him in Paris since 2014 with the play Idiot !
He's coming back with 3 shows
En manque (missing) - we were ... But also "je suis un pays" (I am a country)
and "voilà ce que je ne te dirai jamais" both in Nanterre.
Each time I went to see one of Vincent Macaigne's show I had a strange feeling
The mess in the theatre with his megaphone in which he screams ! The way he asks the audience
to go on stage... the music out-loud, the beer flows, the smog,
You're in the dark, you can't see anything, you can't find your sit
it bothers me !
You know, you want to take the megaphone out of his hand et shout
"You piss me off !" F**K
But actually afterwards I love it! It does not tempt me at all to participate in the mess !
But I love being a watcher
Because suddenly the reactions of the others spectators are part of the show
And I love Macaigne because it's not a free mess
It could be, but no ! It makes sens !
To sum up En Manque I'll just read to you the beginning of the program because it's a perfect summary
An extremely wealthy female art collector opens a foundation containing every single piece of Western art.
Until now, nothing to presume the mess
This is the starting point which Vincent Macaigne uses to confront his childhood dreams with his own contradictions as an adult.
Torn between rebellion - BAM - and resignation, this show looks at a certain idea of art.
The idea of art by Macaigne ! Well it can be interesting
This was the 9 shows I really want to see this Fall in Paris
