Hey everyone, it's Maddie and Bee and today we're going to be going over our bookish
buzzwords. We have so many and we've also picked out two books that will give you
some recommendations for what we mean. This is a list of things if we hear them
related to a book, we are 100 percent more likely to pick them up. A lot of the
books we've chosen actually fall into multiple of these categories but we've
only chosen it one. Although these are in no particular order witches is definitely
at the top of my list. For this I have Spellbook of the Lost and Found by Moira
Fowley-Doyle and The Graces by Laure Eve. I like them to be modern undercover
witches like in these stories but I also just like good solid medieval witches too.
My first one is boarding schools and this can be charted back to my very
first YA read - The Gallagher Girls series by Ally Carter and also one of my
all-time favourites, The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani.
I really like it when it's a specialist boarding school but I'm also just happy
for it to be a normal regular human boarding school as well. Next, we have social
media, whether it's a book literally about social media like Top 8 by
Katie Finn or if it has social media inserts like Radio Silence by Alice Oseman.
Whilst this one is slightly outdated as a social media platform is
based on myspace, it's still super fun and Radio Science is more involved in the
fandom side of the internet, so it's very relatable. Next, we have female
friendships like the ones in Geek Girl by Holly Smale between Nat and Harriet.
They are super supportive of what each person wants to do and then we have Burn for Burn
by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian, which is a slightly more consuming female friendship where
they'll do literally anything for each other. Next we have sisters like in Born
Wicked by Jessica Spotswood. The more sisters the better, to be honest,
and this is about three of them. And then you get bonus points if the book's about twins
so this is One by Sarah Crossan. Next, we have fairy tale retellings like Cinder
by Marissa Meyer which includes some sci-fi elements too and also Kingdom of
Sleep by E. K. Johnston which is a retelling of Sleeping Beauty. Literally
any princess story and I'm guaranteed to love it. Next we have found families like
the original Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan and Invictus by Ryan Graudin.
They both have a team of misfits coming together and just working stuff out and
if they're saving the world, it's even better. Next is feminism like in Am I
Normal Yet? by Holly Bourne and the rest of the Spinster Club books which focuses
on three teenage girls who start a feminist society in their sixth form and
also a Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu which is all about Vivian
who creates a zine in order to combat sexual harassment in her school. I love
these especially because they're just full of female empowerment. Next we have
disappearances. If someone goes missing I want to know where they've gone!
We have Vanishing Girls by Lauren Oliver and Blackbird by N D Gomes. These are
two that we picked up at YALC purely on the basis that they were about
disappearances, so I can't wait to get to them. Next, we have mental health which
can pop up in a variety of forms like in A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard
with Steffi's anxiety and Under Rose- Tainted Skies by Louise Gornall,
about Nora's agoraphopbia. Another favorite of ours is also Paperweight by
Meg Haston which deals with eating disorders. Next we have books with LGBTQ+
protagonists, so we have Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
which is all about Simon who's coming out as gay in his school, and If I was
Your Girl by Meredith Russo, which is about trans girl Amanda. This is also an
own voices story which makes it even more likely that we're going to pick
it up. Next is a university setting like in Freshers by Tom Ellen and Lucy
Ivison, which is all about your first week at uni and Fangirl by Rainbow
Rowell which charts Cath's whole first year. This one is set in the UK and this
one is set in the US so you get both perspectives and how different they are.
We also did a video recommending books that also take place at university or
deal with 18 to 21 age range, if you want to check that out too. Next on my list is
reconnecting relationships and that might sound specific but it includes
Emmy and Oliver by Robin Benway which is about these two characters' friendship
when they were younger but then Oliver was kidnapped by his own parents and
taken away and then he doesn't come back to the town that Emmy lives in the ten
years. After that they have to work out how they fit together again. And Proof of
Forever by Lexa Hillyer which is about four girls that used to be friends at
their old summer camp that they went to every year, then they stopped going
but they decide to go back because it's the camp's tenth anniversary. So, they
have to work out why their friendship crumbles. Next we have the afterlife
which is a particular interest of mine because it's done so differently by
different people so we have Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin which is all
about Liz right after she died and now she's living her life backwards and also
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold which is all about Susie and her afterlife and
also wishing that she was still part the world in order to experience her first
romance. Next, we have probably our favourite setting of all time and that is
summer camps, including The Names They Gave Us by Emery Lord which is about
a camp for troubled kids and teenagers and we
also have the short story written by Jennifer E. Smith in the Summer Days and
Summer Nights anthology. This is also about two teenagers who are counselors
at a camp for troubled kids. Next we have royalty which can be in the completely
fantastical sense or in the contemporary sense. We have The Crown by Kiera Cass
but really the whole Selection series deals with being a princess and living
up to that and also The Princess Diaries series by Meg Cabot which is 11 books
long and follows Mia as she goes from being a regular teenager to
suddenly the princess of a small European principality. Next, we have
personal journeys and we kind of categorized this as things to find or
things to do which is summarised in Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson
which is about Emily, who has been left a list of things to do by her best
friend's Sloane and when Sloane disappears. And, we also have Juniper Lemon's
Happiness Index by Julie Israel. This doesn't have such a formulaic structure
of do one thing and then do the next, but Juniper is on a quest to find
something and along the way she works out who she is too. And finally we have a
very last buzzword which is fame or celebrity. This is probably the most
guilty pleasure of buzzwords that we have. So This is What Happy Looks Like by
Jennifer E. Smith, which is all about girl in a small town and then a movie star chooses
it as a set location and also Songs About a Girl by Chris Russell which is all
about boy bands. So, those are all our buzzwords. If you have any
recommendations for us related to any of these, we would absolutely love to know
and let us know which are some of your biggest buzzwords too, because it might
inspire us and make us remember some things that we've completely forgotten!
Thank you so much for watching and we'll see you on our next video. Bye!
