Exclusive: Arsene Wenger wants to extend Alexis Sanchez's contract this summer

Arsene Wenger insists he wants to extend Alexis Sanchezs Arsenal contract at some point this season, and says being out of the Champions League means they can focus on the Premier League.

Sanchez has one year left on his current deal at the Emirates, and with speculation surrounding his future still rife, Wenger is remaining firm with his stance.

In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, the Frenchman says he has dealt with similar situations many times before at Arsenal, and hopes the Chile international will sign a new deal.

We are in a very simple state, he has one year to go and I want him to stay. And if possible, during the season, extend the contract, Wenger said.

Ive dealt with this kind of situation many times, because when we built the stadium we had such restrictions on the financial front, and we werent too much in a position where we had a choice to make a decision to sell.

We are hopefully going to a future where we will be much stronger on that front.

Arsenal, who face Liverpool at Anfield, live on Super Sunday from 3. 30pm, were drawn against BATE Borisov, Cologne and Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League group stages on Friday.

Despite looking on as a neutral spectator at the Champions League draw the previous day, Wenger is seeing positives.

It is the first time in 20 years Arsenal are not in the Champions League, but Wenger says this means they can fully concentrate on the Premier League.

Yes, its frustrating, because 20 years on the trot we were in the Champions League.

But the Premier League has taken over from the group stage of the Champions League; many times I rested some players in the group stages of the Champions League because the next league game was so difficult.

So the absolute priority now is the Premier League. Wengers Arsenal have started the Premier League campaign with a win and a defeat - beating Leicester 4-3 before losing at Stoke 1-0 - amid question marks about the new three-man defence.

Wenger says Arsenal deserved to win at Stoke, and was disappointed at their defending of set pieces against Leicester, but says the way they react against Liverpool could set the tone for the season.

What was disappointing against Leicester was that we conceded the goals from set pieces. We looked much more solid on that at Stoke, but we were not tested too much defensively because we had 77 per cent of the ball.

So on that front we will be more tested at Liverpool. An accident like the accident that happened at Stoke can happen, but the response we give at Liverpool will decide the quality of our season and our spirit throughout the season.

You go through disappointments and obstacles throughout the season, but the way you respond to it decides your season.

Arsene Wenger replies when asked if Arsenal are signing any more players this summer

Arsene Wenger hints that he is more likely to sell players than bring in any new signings at Arsenal this summer. Arsene Wenger remained typically coy when asked if Arsenal will be signing any more new players in the summer transfer window.

The Gunners have been linked with a host of Europe's top players during the summer but they have only managed to conclude deals to sign Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac so far.

Thomas Lemar is one name to have regularly been touted as a target for the Gunners, and there have been a whole host of other players said to be on Arsenal's radar.

However, there have also been a number of players linked with moves away from Arsenal as Wenger looks to trim down his squad.

And the Arsenal manager hinted that selling players looks more likely than signing any new stars at The Emirates before the transfer deadline next Thursday.

Speaking at a news conference at London Colney ahead of Arsenal's trip to Liverpool, Wenger said: "I am completely happy with the strength of squad and I have too many players, some with no chance to compete for places.

"One of the values of this club is to give a chance to young players, and if you have too many players of confirmed status you are in a difficult position. "We have three or four [young players] who deserve a chance.

Arsenal are currently preparing for their Premier League clash against Liverpool on Sunday at Anfield as the Gunners look to return to winning ways following their 1-0 loss to Stoke last weekend.

The north London side are aiming to challenge for the Premier League title this season after coming up short and finishing fifth last term.

Top 24-year-old linked with Chelsea, Liverpool could be sold before deadline - Duration: 2:16.

Top 24-year-old linked with Chelsea, Liverpool could be sold before deadline

Arsenal star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlains future remains up in the air with the transfer deadline approaching, say reports. Arsenal are facing being "forced" to sell Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain before the transfer deadline next week, according to reports in the British media.

The Daily Mirror is reporting that the Gunners could be forced to offload the 24-year-old midfielder before next Thursday or risk losing him on a free transfer next summer.

The same report says that Arsenal have made one last contract offer to the England midfielder worth around £180,000 a week but the story says that Oxlade-Chamberlain is "likely" to turn it down.

And it is also claimed that Arsenal would rather offload him than lose him on a free transfer next summer.

The same report says that Chelsea are leading the race for Oxlade-Chamberlain's signature should he become available this summer and that they are ready to make a £35m bid.

The story also claims that Liverpool remain interested in signing Oxlade-Chamberlain and that the midfielder's future is likely to come down to a bidding war between the two sides.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has started both of Arsenal's Premier League games this season and will be hoping to feature when the Gunners take on Liverpool in their next Premier League game on Sunday afternoon.

The north London side were beaten 1-0 by Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium last weekend.

Journalist claims top 21-year-old would rather sign for Man United than Arsenal - Duration: 2:10.

Journalist claims top 21-year-old would rather sign for Man United than Arsenal

Thomas Lemar would rather sign for Manchester United than Arsenal this summer, according to journalist Duncan Castles.

The France international has been heavily linked with a transfer away from Monaco throughout the summer, with Arsenal thought to be the team most keen on bringing the 21-year-old to the Premier League.

However, despite all of the speculation linking Arsenal with a move to bring Lemar to The Emirates, a transfer has failed to materialise, and with the deadline now looming large, it would appear that a deal is off the cards.

Now, though, Sunday Times jounalist Castles has claimed that the player himself would rather secure a move to Manchester United that Arsenal this summer. Journalist Castles wrote on Twitter: "Thomas Lemar would rather join Manchester United than Arsenal. #MUFC #AFC #ASMFC #FRA.".

Arsenal have only signed two players so far this summer after having wrapped up deals for Sead Kolasinac and Alexandre Lacazette.

Speaking at a news conference last week, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger described the Gunners' hopes of completing a deal to sign Lemar as "dead", making it look even more unlikely that they will sign him.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have brought in three new faces after signing Nemanja Matic, Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof.

Arsenal transfer: Liverpool v Chelsea for Oxlade-Chamberlain, Benzema as Sanchez replacement - Duration: 4:17.

Arsenal transfer news: Liverpool v Chelsea for Oxlade-Chamberlain, Benzema as Sanchez replacement

CHELSEA and Liverpool look set to battle it out to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after he turned down a new £180k-a-week deal at Arsenal, according to Sky sources.

Arsene Wenger held talks with the England midfielder on Thursday in a final attempt to persuade him to stay at the Emirates.

Sky Sports News understands Wenger will tell the player and his representatives in the next 24 hours whether he will allow him to leave before the window closes next week - or let him see out the final year of his contract at the club.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, capped 27 times by England, sees his future elsewhere, with Chelsea and Liverpool understood to be waiting in the wings, ready to tempt Arsenal with an offer well beyond the £30m offered by Chelsea earlier this month.

According to The Mirror,Arsenal are ready to start the bidding war at £35m ($57m) for the winger. The player, who joined Arsenal from Southampton in 2011, is known to be unhappy playing as a wing-back, preferring a central or wide midfield role.

Wenger will be desperate not to sell to a Premier League rival but Arsenal will struggle to afford letting a prized asset leave for free next summer, especially with Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez in similar positions at the club.

Sanchez has been linked with a Manchester City transfer, but Pep Guardiola refused to buy comment on speculation during his press conference.

"Alexis is an Arsenal player," he said, "like Mbappe is a Monaco player, like Jonny Evans is a West Bromwich Albion player. Normally I don't talk about players from other clubs.".

But, the Spaniard did say more City moves could eventuate. "We're going to see," he said. "There are five or six days left and I think the market's going to move until the last moment.

"All the managers wait until the last seconds to make the transfers cheaper. Spanish outlet Diario Gol has suggested that the Gunners could make a bid for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema if Sanchez does leave the Emirates.

The report says Zinedine Zidane is still looking to offload one of BBC - Gareth Bale, Benzema or Cristiano Ronaldo - to make room for another superstar signing.

It's certainly not the first time that the French striker has been linked with Arsenal, and the report details the Gunners could make a last-minute bid for Benzema if Zidane chooses to axe him.

However, Wenger is also reportedly focused on another potential Arsenal departure.

According to The Mail, the Gunners boss is open to selling Shkodran Mustafi - just 12 months after he bought him. Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Inter Milan are targeting the German centre-back, as well as Manchester City's Eliaquim Mangala.

Thomas Lemar wants to join Manchester United: He can move for £60m - Duncan Castles - Duration: 2:27.

Thomas Lemar wants to join Manchester United: He can move for £60m - Duncan Castles

THOMAS LEMAR has his heart set on a move to Manchester United. That's according to Daily Record journalist Duncan Castles who says sources at Monaco have told him the player is still up for sale at the right price.

Arsenal and the Red Devils have been linked with the French wideman this summer but so far he has remained in the principality.

Earlier today Gunners boss Arsene Wenger said that the deal was 'dead' as Monaco had pulled down the shutters this summer. But Castles says that is not what he has been told.

He told the Transfer Window Podcast: "I had a chat with a Monaco contact last night and asked him where things stood. "He said that the Lemar deal was very much on the table as far as they're concerned.

"It is a possibility he leaves if the transfer fee they're looking for of 60m is met.

"The additional bit of information which was interesting was, I asked where he thought Lemar would prefer to go, Arsenal or Manchester United, and he was very clear.

"He said, 'He wants to go to Manchester United'.

"So that might not be unconnected with Wenger's statement this morning in that essentially once Manchester United come in head-to-head with Arsenal, the financial power is always going to be with the Old Trafford club.

"And also, in the instance, the attraction of Champions League football at Manchester United is there.

"I'm not saying he's going to end up at Manchester United but that is still a viable option if they can come to an agreement on a fee before the end of the transfer window.
