10 Weeks, 10 Hurricanes, and a 124-Year-Old Record Is Matched - Duration: 7:39.

10 Weeks, 10 Hurricanes, and a 124-Year-Old Record Is Matched

With Tropical Storm Ophelia's transition to Hurricane Ophelia on Wednesday, 2017 became the first year in more than a century — and only the fourth on record — in which 10 Atlantic storms in a row reached hurricane strength. Franklin.

Gert. Harvey. Irma. Jose. Katia. Lee. Maria. Nate.

Ophelia. Ophelia, far out in the Atlantic, does not pose a threat to the United States, though it may affect Ireland. But it puts this year in the history books by at least one measure.

The last time 10 consecutive Atlantic storms became hurricanes was in 1893 — and because tracking technology was far more primitive then, meteorologists say, some weak tropical storms or tropical depressions may have gone undetected within that streak.

There were also 10-hurricane runs in 1878 and 1886, said Bob Henson, a meteorologist for Weather Underground. But since modern records began in 1851, there has never been an 11-hurricane stretch. Since Hurricane Franklin formed on Aug.

7, Mr Henson said, there has been "maybe a week total without a named storm roaming the Atlantic somewhere." Two of the 10 hurricanes in that period, Irma and Maria, reached the highest level, Category 5.

Two others, Harvey and Jose, reached Category 4. Within a single month from mid-August to mid-September, six hurricanes developed.

The number of named storms — 10 hurricanes and five tropical storms, for a total of 15 — has already made the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season one of the busiest on record, and there is still more than a month and a half to go before it officially ends.

But what really stands out is the intensity and duration of the storms, reflected in a measure known as accumulated cyclone energy, or A.C.E.

By that index, 2017 ranks eighth since modern hurricane records began in 1851, and its position is likely to rise before the season is over.

measurement for the incomplete season is already more than twice the average for a full season, Mr Henson said.

This year, he added, the Atlantic has experienced 18.75 major hurricane days: the total number of days logged by Category 3, 4 and 5 storms.

While there is significant variation from year to year, this is nearly five times the full-season average of 3.9 days.

All of this leads to one question: Why? The link between climate change and hurricanes is not as simple as the link between climate change and other extreme weather events, like heat waves and droughts, scientists say — in part because, compared with those other events, the sample size of hurricanes is small.

But climate change is one factor.

Katharine Hayhoe, a climate scientist at Texas Tech University, told The New York Times in August that climate change might not increase the number of hurricanes, but that higher ocean temperatures could "have a role in intensifying a storm that already exists," because warmer waters provide more fuel for hurricanes to grow.

That fits with what we have seen this year: a remarkable number of the strongest storms.

"Any given season could have waters that are warmer or cooler than average," Mr Henson said, but these ordinary seasonal variations are occurring on top of a long-term warming trend.

These two elements can combine to produce monstrous storms like Hurricane Irma — which was one of only five known to have reached wind speeds of 185 miles per hour, and which sustained those winds for a record 37 hours.

Generally, hurricanes can develop when the water beneath them is about 79 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, Mr Henson said, and climate change is increasing both the number of days that present those water temperatures and the size of the areas that have them.

Joel Myers, the founder and president of AccuWeather, emphasized that "we don't have enough data" to attribute the intensity of this year's hurricane season specifically to climate change as opposed to ordinary variables, like water temperature cycles that occur over 20 to 40 years.

And he noted that in the northwestern Pacific Ocean (where hurricanes are known as typhoons), activity has been below average. What is clear is that this year, warm waters have combined with atmospheric conditions to produce an exceptionally destructive Atlantic hurricane season.

Wind shear has been very low, Mr Henson said, which has allowed tropical systems to intensify "without being tilted, sheared, torn apart by stronger winds." And steering currents have tended to drive storms over land rather than pushing them out to sea, creating an enormous human toll.

Mr Myers pointed to the same factors, plus two more. A high-pressure area in the Atlantic has been farther north than usual, he said, essentially expanding the tropics and creating a larger space in which conditions are favorable for hurricanes.

And above-average rainfall in parts of Africa resulted in less dust in the air over the Atlantic, which allowed for larger rain droplets. Simply put, virtually every factor that fuels hurricanes has been in place.

But Mr Myers cautioned against taking that as evidence that future seasons will be similar.

"Just because we had these statistics this year when everything was lined up," he said, "doesn't say anything about next year, or the next five or 10 years.".

Immigrant Shielded From Deportation by Philadelphia Church Walks Free - Duration: 8:23.

Immigrant Shielded From Deportation by Philadelphia Church Walks Free

Facing deportation to Mexico and fearing separation from his children, Javier Flores Garcia took refuge last year in a Methodist church in downtown Philadelphia.

Members of the congregation prepared a makeshift bedroom for him in the basement, and promised to give him sanctuary, no matter how long he needed it.

On Wednesday, after nearly 11 months, Mr Flores walked out of the church for good, a rare winner among the tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants who have fought battles over deportation this year.

His case was resolved in an unusual way: He has been promised a special type of visa given to victims of crime who assist the police.

But even so, Mr Flores's freedom gives the growing sanctuary movement, organized by houses of worship across the country to protect undocumented immigrants, a small victory in the face of a widespread federal crackdown.

Mr Flores's case shows "that when we fight and when we resist, that we win," said Erika Almiron, executive director of Juntos, an immigrant rights organization in Philadelphia that took up Mr Flores's case.

President Trump came into office vowing to rid the country of millions of illegal immigrants, and immigration arrests have risen by nearly 40 percent in 2017, compared to the previous year, to a rate of almost 400 people a day.

Since Mr Trump was elected, 34 people facing deportation have publicly taken refuge inside of churches, including four this week, according to the Rev.

Noel Andersen, a minister of the United Church of Christ and the national grass-roots coordinator for Church World Service, an ecumenical human rights and refugee resettlement organization.

So far, seven of those 34 have left their sanctuaries after winning relief from deportation, he said.

"These are not only our friends and our community members, they're oftentimes our congregational members as well," said Mr Andersen, who helps coordinate the sanctuary coalition.

Mr Flores settled into life inside the church, helping out with painting and repairs, setting up tables for the church's soup kitchen and praying in the magnificent Gothic sanctuary.

His young sons, missing him at home, sometimes stayed with him overnight at the church.

"The hardest thing for me was all the suffering my kids had to go through, all the psychological trauma," Mr Flores said in a conference call with reporters.

"But we knew that I had a strong case, and I needed to keep on fighting to be with them." His stay in sanctuary was among the longest, but given that President Barack Obama also made extensive use of deportations, there are two other people still taking refuge after more than a year and a half.

At the other end of the spectrum, Mr Andersen said, one woman from Guatemala who took refuge in July in a Pentecostal church in New Haven had her immigration case resolved in less than a week.

This week, churches in Raleigh, N.C.; Meriden, Conn.; and Highland Park, N.J., announced that they were offering sanctuary to a total of four people.

The New Jersey church took in a couple who say they could face persecution for their Christian faith if they were deported back to Indonesia.

It is their second time in sanctuary in the same church, according to the pastor, Seth Kaper-Dale, an immigration activist who is now running for governor on the Green Party ticket.

It is the policy of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency that churches, schools and hospitals are "sensitive locations" where immigration officers are not supposed to make arrests except in extraordinary circumstances.

So far, the "sensitive locations enforcement policy has not changed" under President Trump, said Jennifer Elzea, the agency's acting press secretary: "I've not been aware of any instances in which we've entered a church or place of worship to conduct enforcement actions." Mr Flores took sanctuary last November at the Arch Street United Methodist Church, one day before he was supposed to report for deportation back to Mexico.

He had been living in the United States on and off since 1997, and had been caught nine times trying to cross the border illegally, immigration officials said.

Mr Flores said he had compelling reasons for doing so: A longtime partner, Alma Lopez, their two sons, and Ms. Lopez's teenage daughter, whom he considers his stepdaughter, all lived in the United States.

Mr Flores supported them by working as an arborist. "I've never brought drugs, I've never helped anybody else cross the border — my only crime is coming back," Mr Flores said in an interview in the church last December.

"I came here for the love of my children." Despite his repeated violations at the border, Mr Flores had a legal case worth pursuing, according to his immigration lawyer, Brennan Gian-Grasso, because he was eligible for what is known as a U visa, given to crime victims who help the authorities catch and prosecute criminals.

Two men wielding box-cutters attacked Mr Flores in a parking lot in Bensalem, Pa., in 2004, and left him seriously injured.

While in the hospital, he helped the police identify the assailants, and he would have testified against them if there had been a trial. They pleaded guilty and were later deported, Mr Gian-Grasso said.

Mr Flores was notified last week that his own deportation has been deferred indefinitely, and that he has been approved to receive a U visa, his lawyer said, adding that such visas are good for up to four years and that Mr Flores will have a good chance at receiving permanent residence after.

It was a "life-changing experience," Mr Flores said, to be taken in by a congregation of strangers and to witness the church regularly serving the homeless and hungry.

What he now wanted most, he said, was to go home, take a walk with his children and greet his neighbors. And then, he said, "I want to go back to work." The church's minister, the Rev.

Robin Hynicka, said: "We would certainly do this again. The room where Javier stayed will remain open and ready." .

the Maldives video

I'm really glad to share

these total of three videos

to show you guys

my perspectives

and the things that I see

in this adventure

Ellen: Everything is wonderful

the thing that I like about Maldives the most is

the resort (Paradise Island Resort & Spa)

the resort was awesome

and...

the sandbank

the sandbank is the

landmark of Maldives I guess

Sean: because that was a

private sandbank

so we were not allowed to stay here

for a very long time (20 minutes)

Shah: this is not low tide yet

Shah: when it is very very low

Shah: until here, you can see baby sharks, stingrays and more

Ellen: oh so the resort guest can walk over here?

Shah: Yeah

(Coma Cocoa Island)

Guraidhoo Island

Active Watersports Maafushi

(jet ski trip usd$35 pp - 40-60 minutes)

Sean: How was the experience in Maafushi?

Ellen: nothing much there.

Ellen: tourist place

Ellen: can you stop doing that

Sean: so say if I give you another day

Sean: do you prefer to stay in the resort
