Spiritual Leader of Thailand Venerable Mae Chee Sansanee on Strengthening the Mind - Duration: 1:02:19.Hello everybody, a warm welcome to Wisdom From North. I'm Jannecke and today I'm so
honored to be here with Venerable Mae Chee Sansanee in Oslo. Venerable Mae Chee is a
revered spiritual teacher of Thailand. She's also the director and founder of
the Sathira-Dhammasathan center in Bangkok and she is traveling extensively around
the world fighting for justice and involving herself in the political and
religious arena and especially fighting for women and children. Hello venerable
Mae Chee! Welcome to Norway. (...) Yeah she said (..) that means
like greeting for all from Thailand. And I just want to say that we have Joy
here as well being the translator so I'm very curious to hear about your journey
because you haven't always been a nun. You were a top model top-10 model in
Thailand and you were thriving as a model and then you decided to take a
complete new path and I'm curious about this if it was a calling or a strong
reason to why you all of a sudden changed your life?
She said that when you..before she become a nun she's a top model, she was
doing a lot of business things and she's well known. Many people knows her
But in that situation. The experience of life
is teaching her that there's more something more than the
thing that you.. that I'm doing. For example she's tried to prove to anyone
that she can do something. She is capable of doing things. She can do this and do that.
But but even though she did so many things
There's something inside of her heart that still suffers, and she said she feels like
there's something more important. There's something more than that which she would
like to discover. So I know your mom meant a lot to you
She raised you as a single-ended mother because your father was not there and
I've saw documentary with you and your mother was very wise. Has she taught you a
lot about the what you know today and has she had an influence on you on
taking this new path becoming a nun?
So she said her mother she open the world for her. She' she opened up the world for her.
Well the world is not only.. life is not only happy. There's sometimes suffering
The happiness and sufferings come with life
and once we learn about that we open opportunities to see the world as the world
it is. So then we will learn to be acceptive of what is the suffering and what is
happiness. But we never stopped.. no we never stop to accept it, but we try
to do it better in another way, spiritual way to get transformed.
So I saw in the documentary that you prayed for enlightenment
now did you receive this enlightenment and can you explain what that is and
that's something I've been wondering about all my life.
She said. Uhm..When in life we are facing too many things in the world
sometimes we get.. we have emotions. Sometimes emotions rise up. Sometimes it's good emotion and
sometimes it is bad emotions. No matter what kind of emotion, if we are above it so we can see
it as the way it is, we are not getting to dwell on it. So this is something some
kind of like the.. She doesn't talk about enlightenment
exactly, but this is kind of like an example of enlightenment, that we can be above
of all the emotions. We don't do well on it, and once we have them once we have to
love or is gentil enough to see it as the way it is, then our minds rise up.
And mindfulness is a very.. one important thing to train our mind in order to be
able to see like that. So well so whatever we are in life we need to
practice, especially train our mind with mindfulness. So then we can have a mind
that is strong enough and subtle enough, so that we can see the world as the way
it is, and see our mind when they have the emotional rise and fall, as the way
it is, but we don't get into the emotion. This is kind of another example of the
enlightenment. Can you speak a little bit about how we can have a better
relationships to our thoughts in a way, how we can master our minds like you
say you're saying we can do it through mindfulness, but sometimes it's like the
mind is obsessively thinking and sometimes I feel like we kind of indulge
in it that it's nice to think and think and think and especially in the Western
world we're very intellectual, especially here in Norway we like to
think we like to be intelligent and come with smart answers you know so I think
we're very addicted to thinking and that we sometimes don't want to let go of
this thinking. Can you speak a little bit about how we can silence the mind and
and actually also wanting to do so in a way.
Well, she said that of course we cannot stop thinking
In our life the mind has a duty to think, but if we train our mind good enough to
have a mindful mind, then when we are mindful the time when
we are thinking.. we are aware that we are thinking, then we're not becoming that thinking.
We can see the thinking itself.. differently. So once we are aware of it
we're not becoming it, so then we can kind of manage our own life better
But it depends how we practice being mindful so that we can be able to
see the thought. We often get lost in thought. We like to be in
some kind of thought. Well that is lost in thought, that is to dwell on it, but if
we have a strong mind so we can see when there is a rising of a thought, we aware of it.
Then the thoughts go away so then we are will be able to observe our own thoughts
and see how we can have a useful thought and then we can make a life that
is better. Because some of the thoughts don't create a pleasant
emotion. So once we aware of it, we are mindful over it, then we'll be able to see
what our thought is about more than dwell on it.
More than dwell on it okay..
She says that when we
practice our mind so that our mind is strong, then we can easily do it in
our daily life to get like a strong mind you know. When we have a strong mind
we see.. when we see the thought the thought will become very sharp and a very
good thought. So then when we make a decision
we have a clear and a better decision to make. So this is how we can prepare our
mind in our daily life in order to face whatever the thought that can come.
So it would be more clear it will be more right and once we make a
decision about that strong mind then the decision will be better.
What about dealing with emotions like grief and difficult things happening
we're losing people we love and we're just overwhelmed with emotions because
thoughts I believe.. I don't know, maybe you can answer that if the thought comes
before the emotion, but we've been speaking a lot about thoughts now, but
what about the overwhelming feelings and emotions that are so difficult to handle
and and maybe we I just feel like we shouldn't just take them away you know
because when we feel grief it should have its place in a way. But still it
hurts it's suffering. So can you speak a little bit about
how we can handle difficult emotions
Well, so she said that when we have a feeling of disappointment we need to
put more gentleness on it so when we feel like we
are anger we need to put more of the loving towards that, and then when we are
like anger and then give like, kind of like wanting too much revenge or something
like that so we need to give like more of the forgiveness you know. So this kind
of thing will help you to see and to accept what it is and
to move on and to see the world as the world is, because in the world there's not
only happiness. There always something like disappointing or something like
that you know. So if we are accepting those kind of things, then
we can transform ourself you know in a way that if you do more of the
gentleness, we do more of the loving kindness, then our mind gets stronger
and then we'll (..) but we're working on it and then see the world
as the world is and accept it for some part and then we grow from that because
with all the suffering, if we can use it it could be fertilized it, it would be
more of the growing of your own spirituality. And to be able to go and to
see in that way, so we need to be.. well more of the.. more of adding the thing
that is more in a way of accepting and transform. Let me ask her a little bit about it.
So I asked her, because there are more things and I didn't translate well.
She said that when we are seeing somebody we're not seeing that they are right or
wrong, but we are seeing that they are suffering or not suffering, what they are
suffering from. So when we are seeing people like that, that "oh"
Sometimes when people are angry and then we see that -oh because of the suffering
that's why they are angry. So we can be able to forgive, and once we have
cultivated our own forgiveness more and more, you become like unconditional
love no matter what that person gonna do to you so you will love them anyway.
She gave example like you know if somebody is gonna kill us, kill me, so if
I understand that it's not about right or wrong. It's about that this person is suffering
then we'll be able to forgive that person. Without suffering they
will not do that. But you would still defend yourself right? Oh yes of course
to defend ourselves but we are not judging
we're not judging and we will see the world as the world is because of their
own suffering that's why they're exposing that way. So we cannot stop
people in doing bad things to us, but we can stop ourselves not to feel bad
towards that person. Right that's a beautiful answer the
non-judgment in the way and looking from the heart. In the Western world at least
in Scandinavia I feel like there's a lot of this feeling that we need to get more
things in a way you know wealth and success and status and feel good and
there's a lot of depression here in Scandinavia. Many feel there are not good
enough. How can we create this internal wealth being satisfied with everything
we have right here right now instead of craving all these things that we think
will make us happy?
So she said that in the world every human wants to have love for himself
love to have happiness and doesn't want to have suffering. This is everyone in the
world wishing for that. But in Norway in a way you have
everything. You know everything. You are not like the other countries where
they have like no food no things. So this is the way that well..
It helps the less spiritual immunities to grow. For other.. when
people are in a difficult life so they have to fight you know to
learn to accept things. Even the disappointment a little bit and then
they accept and then they grow. The spiritual growth coming on. No matter
whether they are in that trash accommodation or whether
they are in a not a very good accommodation or having bad food,
but they learn little by little the spiritually immune for growth. What do
you mean spiritually immune? You mean Norwegians are not so spiritual?
No. It's like when we are talking about the growth, the spiritual growth that
usually people have in the world. Some people are facing a very
difficult life. They learn a little bit more of accepting things
even though they are disappointed a little bit, they accepted it, accepted it. But
as we are here in any country where we have enough wealth,
we'll have very little to learn about accepting disappointment.
Very little disappointment, just so that they can grow. So once they have a big disappointment
they get kind of crushed somehow. So this way so when we are this way we have
to train our mind in order to you know to have a strong.., accepting
things little by little so then the spiritual growth.. We can change
the disappointment into being a fertilizer for
our own growth. For example she didn't she didn't really exactly give me
example, but it's like when when we have something that is not..
a dislike and if we can use that incident to make us grow,
to learn in another way to make us grow, that is the kind of a growth of the
growth of spiritual growth that could help them face the world with the more
difficult problems. So here we are kind of like well as a spiritual wealth
we need to train our minds in order to prepare for our life,
to cope with it. But usually, she said usually people
always want to have something perfect. We try to compare to.. if not
perfect this is not perfect. So that is making our own spiritual
..feel like a little bit down because we
compare and then we don't get to the things that we're supposed to be, and that is
creating the emotional rise. But if someone who have enough spiritual growth
they can face it. They can go through it. But if someone who doesn't
have the spiritual growth, they're probably crack or burst out with
something about that terrible life. So you get in a way stronger fundament
in yourself and if you have worked on your mind and trained your mind in a way
you can handle more challenges
So she said a present moment is a precious moment. The present moment is when our
mind is with our body in every speech every action the mind and then also the
mind the intention of the mind so we'd be in our in our present moment if we
are in that. So whatever emotion arise we can be above it. We don't becomeit or dwell
on it. Then or even the thinking the thought, if it arises, we can be above it.
We can see it. Then every moment if you are in the present moment, every moment
in life is very sharp, is very clear, is very smart, because we are
above it you know we don't become it. And then these things happen
because of the need to practice in everyday life to gain a strength in our mind.
It's not a strength that is kind of like tough, but it's strain that comes
with humbleness. A strength that comes with loving, comes with kindness. So it's a kind
of energy that is more like the energy that could be able to serve others in a
way and could be able to express in the kindness in a way it's kind of like when
you are in a present moment with mindfulness so in your life it will be a more like
less suffering less suffering of the emotions. Even though
good and bad emotions will come we know that it's rise and fall, rise and
fall. We don't refuse the bad emotion. We accept it because we
know that it comes and goes. So this is kind of thing that we see the world as a
world is. This is the way that we see the world as the world is. So then we are
kind of like, we are powerful inside in order to face the world when whatever emotion
arise no matter how big or small. With this strength we can cope with it.
Beautiful
So she says more like.. well the world is..
it is just the world it is and the world has the darkness. Usually the world has
always darkness you know. The world has darkness? How do you say it.. It's light and
dark. The world always has dark. Always dark and light, but there's
most.. more darkness. More often darkness? Well when we see the
world as the world it is, we will see that well it is not always pleasant.
And our heart also you know. Our heart.. if we are in a dark room and if our mind
is closed.. The eyes are closed and it's kind of dark, we won't
see anything at all because we are in the darkness. But even though the
darkness of the world is there, but we open the eyes of our hearts so it's light.
No matter how dark the world is, we can see the way out because we open our
hearts mind. Open our hearts eyes? Open our eyes of the heart.
And there's always a way out you are saying?
If we open it we can see the way out, we can see the
solution. We can see the way the world is and we can work on it so the heart is
very important we can we have to open up with the light at least we have the
light in our hearts. We cannot control the world outside but we can work on the
hearts inside. If lit up. And with the light like this though we need to train
our mind in order to know how we can light up our mind. So with our action.. Because we are from different parts, from different
ways of life so we have different actions that we did and no matter what we are
doing it always bounces back. Like when we do good things the good things come
back. When doing bad things the bad things coming back. Kind of the law of
attraction? Yeah it's kind of like something is a law of nature that's
always coming back. So we (.?..) good speech they'll come back with a good you
know people are reacting good. So this kind of thing is a kind of like the law
of nature that we need to learn to see how it works and then and then how we
could...how we could open our light in the heart so that we can be
able to see. And every person every human being has a potential inside. They
always have something good inside, but they don't allow themselves to open
up. They are not giving the opportunities to open up. Or every human being
has also something inferior like something that is not so good. So we
have to transform it so we not allow ourself to triumph, but we condemn it
instead of condemning instead of like yelling it or it feeling good bad about
ourselves we just give them opportunity to transform to learn and then to change
the weakness to just more strength, but for the strength that we have we have to
have opportunity for them to be able to share with others or to be a benefit to
others. So this is a way that we can bring ourselves
up to another level. To the level where we can be able to live in a world
without suffer. And this is the things that the new generation will need to
learn about. Because in the world it is always something going on
We cannot control it, but we can be able to take care of our heart in order
to face it no matter what happens. So beautiful it's amazing how powerful the
heart is. I want to ask you a little bit about
the new generation because you've been in prisons with women in prison
being pregnant and I saw this video where you spoke about that it's important
what they think about the children, that it has like a great impact. Can you speak
a little bit about.. I can imagine there are a lot of women out there who
are curious about how their thoughts affect their children
So she's talking about the new generations okay we cannot control them. We cannot force them
to come and be with us so what the best teaching for the new
generation is to show them the way that we are
to just let them experience what we are doing together. Like for example like her.
She let them be a witness, to be a part of working together and then
they'll learn that no matter what happens she is using the wisdom to
handle it. It's not always happy what everything's happening in the
world, in our life, or there's always some problems which occurs, but what she showed
them is that no matter what (happens) we're still happy because we can still be using
whatever we have to face the world.. to have our solution in the way that we
are we be able to to move on. And in every situation
everything that arise, we can still be happy. We're speaking about the young
generational or the women in the prison? The young generation. We're talking about the young
generation how they can learn. They learn by observing. They learn by looking at it
When they seen that she used every situation even though it's not a good
situation, but she turns it into the way that oh there's always a solution and with
the wisdom though it's not hurting others. We're not doing something bad
for other people, but we inside we're still happy. She said that the problem is
success is a key success because if you know how to use it it could be a
good fertilizer for you to grow. But the problem is kind of like a success formel.
A success formel. Yeah it's kind of like when you use it you know a wisdom
way you know you can use that problems and change transform into the
fertilizer for your spiritual growth. And this is a thing that the young
generation need to learn. We cannot force them to come and learn this kind of
thing. But they have... We open opportunity for them to observe and then learn with
us so then they can be able to understand that whatever the situation
that arise, we can copy. You don't have to run away from it. We copy it with wisdom
so how it could be so they learn and..once they
know how to do it, they apply it to their lives easily.
So one of the last questions; you speak about that there's no coincidence and
when we meet a new person we have met that person before and that person
is the most important person for you right now
and I thought that was so beautiful because when you think that way then you
really respect that person. And you told us this the other the other day where
we're in a group and met several women and I thought that was just so..It did
something with me in the way I meet other people thinking that I've met them
before. Can you speak a little bit about that
So believes that every human being has a potential to transform themselves.
To be able to be born as a human being is very hard.
If you realize it and if you respect the life that we have, we will use every
minute of life in a way that we could be able to benefit others
and she believed that we are not born in this world or not only for transform
ourselves but to be able to help others. So once we are seeing the
world as the world it is, we can have freedom of our life, free from
suffering. Then when we are free from our suffering, then we will be able
to transform ourselves into the better spiritual level and then not only that
we are here in this world to help other also, so we can be able to help others
and once we are doing that we will see the variable inside of ourselves and
that make us.. our life is more variable and more precious and then we will
respect our life more. And once we respect our life like that it's kind
of like a circle that we are doing more things of the goodness and we are more
aware of our variable that we have even though we have very little peace in
the world, but we are variable enough to live and it should be about to help
others and in this way we will live in the world with respect humble and gentle
and share what we have to others. Do we live many lives or is this the only life
I have in a way?
She's talking about her life ..We are
not born only in this life. We have been born in so many life in the past and to be born as
human being is very very hard it's like the one turtle in the ocean and then it
comes up like a year one time in a year, and how do you see them. How
long have you seen this turtle. Turtle?
There's a turtle in the ocean and they come up like 100 years one time and then
how if you are out in a boat when can you see this turtle. It is
how hard it is to to become a human being.
Oh. So it's very hard to get to become a human being
but to become a human being with perfect like you have.. everything's perfect like hands
and you know you're not like in handicaps. You know your perfect, body
perfect, mind perfect. Even harder. And the hardest thing is that how you could
train your mind to be able to be free from suffering. This is a (..) but it is
capable to do. Do you mean it's hard to even become a human or that it's
difficult to be a human. It is hard to born as a human
To be born as a human. So how hard it is so she compared to
like the turtle, how hard it is. Even harder and harder but whatever you
can do it. And you have to do it you know in order to train you mind to be free from
the suffering. And once we know how hard it is to become one human being
at this life, we will respect our life. Yeah. We will see we are valuable enough in
our life. So we're not gonna destroy our life because it's such a hard things to
be able to be born as this. Yeah I like that thought that we actually respect
that you know this is difficult but I'm doing my best then there's a solution
but it's hard instead of like beating ourselves up
because you know I'm not handling this yeah. So last question; does it help to
pray and who are we kind of praying to why we're praying to ourselves like in
intelligence in ourselves or something externally?
So she said first of all people who are in our lives.
We have to have aim or a purpose in life. Or a way that we'd like to live.
Especially like spirtual a spiritual path.
In Buddhism we call it enlightenment. So if you have aim in our life, it depends on people
They can choose what they like and we need to have
the path to walk to that things and we have to have instrument in order for us
to help us to go through that and we have to have like friends like
spiritual friends or whatever to walk together in that path to the aim of
our life. Okay so in the world there's so many religions so many faiths
you can choose whatever you like you choose and then you have the
path to walk on. We don't have to pray for anything but we walk on our own, on
that path with our friends who can share with us and with our technique or with
our instrument. Or tools. Any kind of tools that helps us to walk in that
path. But for example for her as a Buddhist and for herself so she has used
like.. Every morning she woke up with the heart of wanting to help people.
As a green Tara. You know green Tara? Tara is a Bodhisattva for heart
That Bodhisattva is a woman figure who is devoting herself to be
a.. working as a helper for for people who are in
spirituality to get to gain enlightenment. So she's not only using the
Buddha as a main spiritual master but she also used the green Tara as like
(..) her inspiration to do to help many people and then to help..
Every morning she think about her, the green Tara. It inspires her to help more
people. The greater herself has their own virtue
you know she's type like character is to make difficult thing to be easy things
and she's brave to, she has courage to face any kind of problems so this is
kind of a virtue she uses in order to..for her life in everyday life
so she can be able to be more benefit to others. And the brief and then her
technique is using the breathing mindful breathing and she has a path of the..
The Buddha has told us that we have a we have a middle path, we have a noble path
which is like we are strong, the compassion and wisdom together
and then walk in this way to the aim as enlightenment. Sorry can you repeat
that we have a middle way you said? Yeah your noble path maybe in the
noble path yeah we walk in that way with the wisdom and compassion together and
we walk in this way to the aim which is enlightenment and every time we walk we
are happy to be walking we are not waiting to be happy at the end.
Every time we walk we learn and we grow and that is a happiness arising we don't
have to wait at the end but meanwhile we're receiving some so this is a way of
her mission in life. The last question; is that
the purpose for every human being to reach that goal in a way to reach
enlightenment?
She said it depends on that person but enlightenment is for everyone. We can
even no matter what we can do (..) in the past we can stop it and then we can
redo it. No not redo it, we can do the new the
goodness now every day from now so then we can reach to the Enlightenment but
it depends on that person, if they choose it or not choosing it. But they are
available. And there's no judgment in not choosing it ? No there's no judgment,
it depends on that person and for her she chooses it.
Thank you so much
It means greetings in Thai language.
Thank you Joy. You're very welcome. Thank you so much for watching! Much light from Oslo

"Get out Murderers of Children" – Kuwait Parliament expels Israeli Delegation - Duration: 1:04.First of all, I would like to thank the committee for its neutral report
and secondly, what the parlimentary representative of this brutal occupation
represents the most dangerous form of terrorism; state terrorism
That's what this brutal occupier represents, and I say to him
that he goes by the proverb; "If you do not feel shame, then do as you please."
You should pack your bags and get out of the hall
after you saw the reactions of the world's honourable parliaments.
Get out of the hall right now, if you have an atom of dignity
You occupiers, you killers of children!
Applause and chatters in the background

Proenza Schouler is Launching A New, More Accessible Line - Duration: 1:37.Proenza Schouler is Launching A New, More Accessible Line
Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, the design duo behind Proenza Schouler, are launching a new line this fall. According to WWD, the brand is called White Label and will offer more casual, accessible pieces like denim, t-shirts and basic essentials.
White Label reportedly wont act as a diffusion line to Proenza but rather as a sister collection. While the price point is still unclear, chances are the wardrobe essentials will be offered at a more affordable price, for those who cant afford Proenza Schouler pieces ranging in the thousands.
News of the secondary line comes as the brand celebrates its 15th anniversary this year.
After moving their New York Fashion Week show to Paris to align with the Paris Couture Week schedule, the launch of White Label is just the latest in new ventures for the New York-based brand.

Professor Mark Lilla: Politics Isn't About Identity, It's About Winning - Duration: 2:44.MARK LILLA: There was a time when it was possible to talk about equal rights for these groups,
civil rights movement, the women's movement, gay rights movement, without using the word
"identity" at all.
You talked about social justice.
Then something happened.
The word "identity," the concept of identity, entered the American language, and politics
was no longer a question of being committed to a cause affecting people out there, but
became a species of self expression.
I am expressing my identity by getting involved in this issue, or that issue, and I'm focused
on politics only because of my identity, and the point of that is: I need to speak truth
to power.
I need to call people out.
I've got to fight the power.
When in fact the point of politics is to be the power.
Identity movements have put themselves into a state of, at the moment, a kind of frenzy
that defeats this very practical purpose, and two things happen, and then I'll be done.
One is that a radical rhetoric gets employed that gets in people's faces in a way that
is not helpful.
Black Lives Matter, which laid out a call to the conscience of anyone with a conscience
in this country, ended up breaking up meetings with Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.
Suicide.
But the other point, and this is where we come to free speech, is that if your politics
are wrapped up with your definition of your self, it gets very hard to have a political
discussion because people feel that in disagreeing with their opinion that you're challenging
their identity, and that's what's happened on our campuses.
We're no longer detached enough to argue without feeling that it's about us, and the big lesson
we have to learn it's not about us.
It's not about how we define ourselves, it's not about intersectionality, it's not about
my sensitivities, it's about fighting for justice out there for other people,
and to do that, you need to retool.
TOM SLATER: Thank you very much, Mark.
