NETHACK: The dev team thinks of everything - Duration: 7:45.
In Nethack's Medusa level, you have to cross a sea.
Opening and applying a tin of grease will protect your items from the sea's rust and corrosion.
The sea is filled with dangerous eels and Kraken that can grab you with their tentacles
pull you under the waves and drown you.
But if you've greased yourself up before crossing instead the game print:
Be careful though, if you try using a cursed can of grease
yes that's a thing the grease will cover your hands instead
and your slippery fingers will drop your weapon leaving you defenceless.
It's okay, you can apply a towel to wipe off that grease.
And when you've finished crossing that sea you can put on that towel
covering your eyes to avoid the petrifying gaze of Medusa
all while using a simple hand mirror to use her own ghastly image against her.
This short sequence of one small part of the game
shows three things that make nethack great.
Three things I think still haven't been put together in another game
in the thirty years since Nethack was first released.
Let's go through them in reverse order starting with the towel
and what you can do with it.
The first of these things is player verbs.
Most games decide verbs, or actions, for you.
Click on a sword - it wields the sword.
Look at a door - you'll be prompted to open it.
These systems are great.
They allow you to do things simply without having to look up the controls.
But they're not flexible.
Games like Arma or Project Zomboid are more flexible.
After activating an object they give you a list of things you can do with it.
But Nethack works the other way around.
The game has a much bigger list of actions and you start your interaction with that verb,
not the object.
For example, you first press shift + P to tell the game you want to put something on
then choose what object from your inventory.
It's an overcomplicated system
that makes Nethack extremely difficult to get into and learn.
Just sticking with p, you press lowercase p to pay in a shop
and ALT+p to pray to your god.
It uses every letter on the keyboard – TWICE or more
for its multitude of different actions.
When I first played it I got stuck for a few minutes not knowing how to go down the stairs
to level two. it's the greater than key by the way.
No modern game designer in their right mind would ever dream of making a game this clunky
but it's part of what makes Nethack interactive
in ways that other games can't hold a candle to.
Quite literally.
In Nethack you can dual wield candles, or even eat one.
There's point to separating objects from their verbs.
While most games say "here's what you can do with this"
Nethack asks the new player "what do you want to try?"
Even though many things don't work, it feels like you can try anything
and the game gives you good reasons to experiment.
In Nethack sometimes it makes perfect sense to use strange verbs with standard objects
like eating a ring or throwing all your money away.
Or putting on not a pair of glasses, but a towel.
Let's look at what this verb flexibility does with an old RPG staple, the potion.
In Nethack you can of course drink a potion (actually Quaff it, D was already taken)
but it's not always a good idea to drink unidentified potions.
So you might try throwing one, letting enemies be your Guinea pigs.
You can dip things into potions or dilute them with water.
And dropping them actually has a use other than just discarding them
enemies will pick up and use the potions, allowing you to identify them.
Which might come in handy … if you survive the now invisible orc.
That orc shows it's not just about the player, just like the Kraken did back in the introduction.
The second thing about Nethack is the enemies.
All the things you can do to them, all the things they can do
and how that's more than just bashing each other until one of you falls over.
You see you CAN talk to the enemies in this game
although to be fair most of them don't have anything to say.
But some of them can be bribed to leave you alone
while others … you can … Nethack and chill.
Most enemies you'll just kill, but the interactions don't stop at their death.
You can eat them to gain their powers, or pick up their corpses and wield them as weapons.
Similarly, enemies can do things other than just damaging you with their attacks.
They'll interact with items.
They'll even interact in different ways with you.
Nurses will hit stubborn patients who refuse to disrobe, but will heal a naked p layer.
(Just be careful a bunch of soldier ants don't show up and catch you with your pants down.
Things like this make combat an interesting puzzle when facing multiple enemies.)
Leprechauns will steal your money and then teleport away, which gets me back to what
I said earlier about using strange verbs with standard objects.
Throwing all your money out of their reach as you engage them is a viable strategy.
Even when enemies get down to straight up violence, they'll do interesting things
like that Kraken did, trying to drown you instead of just beating you to death.
But if you remember, that drowning attack failed, because our valiant hero
had greased himself up.
I'm pretty sure no other game has a tin of grease, let alone multiple uses for one.
The third thing that makes this game special is the number and variety of objects.
The in-joke is Nethack has everything including the kitchen sink – literally.
The devs added them after getting so many comments about it.
Importantly the objects are not just for show, like that tin of grease
they have multiple uses.
And they react to environmental effects.
Your metal items will rust in water
your potions will boil and explode when you're hit by flame.
Many objects react to others in special ways.
If you have a magical bag that holds more inside than its outside dimensions would suggest,
whatever you do, don't put a wand of magic cancellation into it.
Most important is the way these verbs, objects and enemies all work together.
Sure many things don't work.
You can't drink a book or talk to a wall, and soldier ants can't read magic scrolls.
And I kind of lied earlier, you're not even allowed to try eating a candle or a ring
you can't digest them.
(...at least in human form. Hint hint).
But when things make sense, the game will often respond.
The unbelievable thing is there are more of each of these things than in most other games,
and yet they can often interact without making the game halt and catch fire.
These three big things multiplied by each other make Nethack's closed, dark dungeons
bigger than any open world game could ever be.
In many games complex interactions work from a handful of pieces
combining with a few simple rules; the outcome calculated by the computer.
Nethack does that too, but many of its complex interactions work because over the years
they've handwritten and hand coded responses to even incredibly rare situations.
At times you can't believe the game will possibly have a response - it does
it will print out Yet Another Funny Message for you, because as the saying goes:
the dev team thinks of everything.
Thanks so much Brett for some awesome animation.
It really made this video work.
If you wanna check out Brett's channel check out Quackbillion on youtube.
He's got a twitter too, so do I now,
Um, and if you wanna help me out gimme a buck on Patreon
It helps me pay for things like cool artists
And this time patrons get a cool thing like a video with a few criticisms of Nethack
and also how I recommend how you should play it if you're a new player
but yeah anyways, thanks very much.

Testimonial from student raghavender now working from as a project manager
Pushpa Latha teacher teaching directions to her students
Students are spread out in all four directions in small groups each group representing a direction.
Now as each group is said which direction they are facing, they are asked to question each other about the direction they are facing.
Every students in return as a different group as to which direction they are facing after answering the question of other group.
Student testimonial from Hari Krishna from California, USA.
Teaching the students revolutions of earth relative to the sun using her own methods of teaching.
In this class, the group of girls are going to act as sun and the single girl is going to be acting like earth.
As the girl acting like earth starts to mimic the motion of earth around the sun, it hardly requires any effort from the students to understand it.
Now as they watch this, they are taught how days and nights are formed and how seasons are formed.
Gradually, they are taught how it takes 24 hours for earth to make one revolution around itself and how it takes a year for the earth to complete one revolution around the sun while making revolutions around itself..
Testimonial from Student Sunitha working for Eenadu, daily news paper.
Madam, was our class teacher when I was in my primary school.
We used to enjoy a lot when madam used to teach us and she used to give wonderful examples.
Apart from academics, madam also used to encourage and motivate us in co-curricular activities.
Daily after the lessons, she always told us a motivational story at the end of the class.
At the end of class, she also encouraged us to ask doubts or even to repeat the whole class without any hesitation.
Also in the prayer assembly, she always encouraged each one of us to lead the prayer as she wanted us to get rid of stage fear.
We felt she cared so much about us as she used to even tell us what kind of food is healthy for us
She is the person who inculcated core values in us like respecting elders and helping our peers.
Madam is a great inspiration for us. Thank you madam. Thank you so much for making us what we are.
Co-teacher testimonial from Mr. Srinivasulu teaching Biological science in ZPHS manikonda
I had been working with pushpa latha madam for the past 5 years.
She is person who is friendly with co-teachers. She has a helping nature and is very friendly with students as well.
She is particular about all around development of students of not just her class, but the whole school.
The pupils too like the teacher a lot.
She even goes to the extent of findings out if any financial difficulties are stopping students from coming school.
We appreciate that she never hesitates to help poor students even financially, which is very rare around here.
She even takes part in social activities in the village to motivate parents
I am also aware that she organised blood donation camps in Lions Club Mahabubnagar.
her teaching methods are innovative and she had achieved several great results from her methods of teaching.

5 Creative Ways to Motivate Employees — Without Money - Duration: 8:31.
Hey, it's Marie Forleo and you are watching MarieTV, the place to be if you want to create
a business and life you love, and I think you do.
Now, if you ever wonder how to attract and retain the best team you possibly can, especially
if big salaries or huge bonuses are just not an option, this question is for you.
Today's comes from Elizabeth who writes:
"Hey, Marie.
I love your show and your heart for service."
Thank you.
"I'm the founder of a nonprofit and we're in a huge growth spell right now, so we're
starting to hire, and I want to bring the right people on board.
I want to invest in my team, but this seems hard with a nonprofit because donors want
their resources to go towards programs, not payroll.
I know taking care of your team is how you thrive as an organization.
Can you suggest incentives outside of profit sharing that help you grow and retain talent?
Thank you so much for your advice, Elizabeth."
Elizabeth, I love this question.
As you know, getting and keeping the right people on board – it is crucial to your
success, especially in today's world of low employee engagement and high turnover.
But even more than that, getting the right people on the bus makes going to work fun
and something you can actually look forward to.
Now, I have no doubt that our amazing audience is going to help crowdsource a ton of brilliance
in the comments below, but first I want to share five ideas that have really worked well
in our business.
But before I do that, I want to say something to you.
You actually have a huge advantage going for you, because recent studies of employees here
in the US show that making a positive impact is the most important measure of employee
success followed by, in this order: doing work you love, good work/life balance, and,
of course, the pay.
So as a nonprofit you have got your purpose game down, girl.
Booyah!
But here are five more incentives that I want you to consider.
Number one is flexibility.
This, my friend, is what so many humans crave more of.
We crave more control over our own schedule because, let's face it, right?
In life, things happen.
Both special events that you just don't want to miss, and people get sick.
Plus, putting the emphasis on results rather than who is at their desk at what hours gives
people more control over their day and makes them feel trusted, which is hugely important.
Now, of course there are positions where you do need to be at your desk at certain hours,
but in those cases you might want to consider having people cross-trained or consider having
a few part-timers instead of one full-timer.
Number two is time off.
Because I've got to say, what's one thing we all want more of?
More time!
Amen.
Yes, we do.
So, Elizabeth, how can you be generous about giving people time off?
I'll tell you what we do in our company.
We give people six weeks of paid vacation, plus paid holidays, plus something called
inspiration days.
Now you might be asking, what are inspiration days?
Inspiration days are paid time off that you can take to do something fun and inspiring
like go to a museum or head to the beach, or learn beekeeping ... in Spanish.
Don't anger the bees, or they will kill you.
Ow!
Number three is the best tech.
So you've got to hook your people up and make sure they have the most up to date software
and laptops and phones.
Now, of course you do not have to upgrade every time something new comes out – that
would be a little nuts.
But the best tech not only helps people be more productive, but it also builds company
pride and morale.
Because, you know this, nothing is more demoralizing than trying to get something done and being
stymied by the pinwheel of death.
Hey, guy – guys?
Can you hear me right now?
Hello? Something's not right.
I can't feel my legs.
So, yes.
This one does cost money.
But as a nonprofit, there's a really good chance you can negotiate a discount or a donation.
Number four, you want to challenge them to grow.
So you need to expect a lot from your people and really challenge them to gain new skills,
because if they don't see a growth path ahead they're not going to stay.
You know what I do sometimes is I assign missions to people that they need to go figure out,
and 99% of the time it's around a project that none of us have experience in, we've
never done anything like it before.
And, frankly, I expect results.
And, you know what?
They always make it happen.
And other times something will come up and I'll say, "Hey, who's stepping up to
take this on?"
And always someone rises to the challenge.
And doing that transforms them in a way that's exciting both for them and for everyone else.
And you want to know why?
It is because of this tweetable.
"No one rises to low expectations.
A-players want to step up, not level out."
And, finally, number five is appreciation and acknowledgement.
Now, I have to say, this is one of the most important things you can do to attract and
retain talent, and it's one of the most underrated.
You have got to make it a part of your company culture to celebrate and appreciate and publicly
acknowledge people for their hard work.
Now, for example, when someone in our company hits a milestone or they just kick some major
butt on a project or when a team gets something monumental done, we pour on the specific and
sincere recognition for each person.
I mean, we clap, sometimes we make monkey sounds, we will throw the confetti in the
air.
We go to town celebrating.
And, you know what?
When something is real good?
Yup, gets a little reggae airhorn.
Now, this year things were so good that to show my appreciation for my team I took everyone
on a company vacation to Mexico.
Yes.
Now, obviously I've been in business for many years now and this is not the kind of
thing that I could have done early on.
So if that's a little too nachos in the sky for you, start simple.
Do something maybe like a company brunch.
Anything really where the only agenda is connection and having fun.
So there you have it, Elizabeth.
Five creative ideas to help you both attract and retain top talent.
And before we wrap, make sure that you watch these other episodes on this topic too.
So the first one up is my secret weapon for leading a happy team.
And, yes, it involves handcuffs.
Second, the one with my good buddy Simon Sinek on how to inspire others to do remarkable
things.
I'm going to put links to both of those right below this video.
And that was my A to your Q, Elizabeth.
I really do hope it helps.
And now I would love to hear from you.
So outside of big salaries or bonuses or profit sharing, what are some other ideas for meaningful,
creative incentives to offer your team?
Now, as always, the best conversations happen over at the badass land of MarieForleo.com,

10 Celebrity Moms Top Pregnancy Cravings Pickles and ice cream? Chocolate-covered potato
chips? Pop-Tarts? Check out the wacky, weird, and sometimes healthy pregnancy cravings of
celebrity mamas.
Laura Prepon "Orange is the New Black" star Laura Prepon
revealed she's having all sorts of old-school cravings for her childhood favorites such
as pastrami sandwiches on rye and cherry soda. "I haven't eaten that stuff in years," she
said on Live with Kelly and Ryan. "Since I've been pregnant I've been craving kind
of like this Jewish deli food, with like the pickles and the sauerkraut and mustard." The
37-year-old is expecting her first child, a girl, with fiancé Ben Foster.
Amal Clooney The human right lawyer is currently several
months preggers with twins, and she recently divulged to RadarOnline that she and husband
George Clooney are expecting one boy and one girl! Amal is reportedly due sometime this
summer, and in the meantime a source told Closer Weekly that the mama-to-be has been
frequenting La Pelouse restaurant in Paris, where she was spotted with the former ER star
over the weekend. "He's more nervous than she is," the source explained. "He's
insisting she rest more, and he's spoiling her with all of her favorite treats. Amal's
been craving pasta and risotto with white truffles lately." Awwww! And because the
first-time dad is super supportive, he's been indulging right along with her. "He
feels like he's going to gain all the weight," the source added, "but he's fine with
it."
Hannah Davis The Sports Illustrated supermodel—who is
expecting her first child with husband Derek Jeter—is a vegetarian, but her pregnancy
has her itching to break that rule. "I don't eat meat, but now I crave beef jerky all the
time, which is kind of interesting," she told Extra. And Davis also gets hankerings for
yummy junk food. We feel that, Mama! "I like a lot of gummies, like candy and stuff
like that...anything salty, sweet," the model said. Apparently, her baby-on-the-way has
driven away her picky-eating tendencies: "Now it's like…give me everything!"
Peta Murgatroyd Yes, even professional dancers get cravings
during pregnancy. Peta Murgatroyd of "Dancing with the Stars," who recently announced
she is expecting her first child with her fiancé and fellow DWTS star Maksim Chmerkovskiy,
admitted to People, "My diet right now is crazy. I crave fresh fruit and pickles and
I'll have everything at the same time."
Another recent craving? Let's just say dessert for breakfast is not out of the question for
Murgatroyd. "I really crave cold ice cream for anytime of the day," the shimmying superstar
told E! News.
Still, the gorgeous mama-to-be is doing her best to satiate her cravings with healthy
snacks. "I'll have organic salsa and chips and then pineapple, and I'll finish it with
two pickles." Murgatroyd adds, "I'm glad I ate really healthily before I got pregnant
because I don't crave McDonald's and doughnuts and stuff like that."
Yup, we'll agree ice cream is perfectly healthy when you're growing a tiny human!
Anna Chlumsky During her first pregnancy, it was all butter
and pastries and sugar when it came to cravings for the "Veep" star. "It's funny because [2½-year-old
daughter Penelope] will lick the icing off of something," she recently explained on "Last
Call With Carson Daly." "So I'm like, 'Does that correlate with the cravings?'" If so,
the Emmy-nominated actress—who is currently six months preggers with her second child
with husband Shaun So—probably doesn't have to worry about history repeating itself. "With
this pregnancy, I want Japanese food all the time," she said. "I want sushi!" Something
tells us she better start stocking up on those colorful, plastic kiddie chopsticks now!
Behati Prinsloo Hubby Adam Levine recently spilled the beans
about the Victoria Secret Angel's pregnancy cravings to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show.
"She's eating a lot of watermelon," he told Jimmy. "A LOT of watermelon. You get random
cravings for stuff, and it's just like SO much watermelon." Not a bad hankering to have,
considering the sweet snack has been shown to do everything from help keep pregnant mamas
hydrated and soothe morning sickness to boost the body's immune system and raise the skin's
SPF. Can't do much better than that—though the Maroon 5 frontman added that the model
mama is starting to get into ice cream, too. But because the first-time father-to-be is the
ultimate team player, he doesn't let his wife indulge alone. "I eat a lot of stuff," he
admitted. "A lot of stuff."
Ellie Kemper The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star recently
revealed that she's expecting her first-born with husband Michael Koman sometime this summer.
And so far, her pregnancy cravings have been pretty, well, chill. "I've been eating a LOT
of ice cream," she told Conan O'Brian. "It's gotten to the point where... I feel like an
alcoholic, but it's for Ben & Jerry's. Like, I go there every night. And the guy looks
at me... and he's so kind. But he knows." Too funny! "I, like, peruse the avocados,
and I'm like, 'Oh maybe I'll get an apple," the actress continued. "And then, like, of
course I'm going to the freezer. I said on Tuesday, 'I can't get ice cream again until
Friday, you have to hold me to it.' And then I came in on Thursday night, and he looked
at me and he just slowly shook his head." Eat it if you got it, Ellie!
Ginnifer Goodwin While expecting her second son with husband
and co-star Josh Dallas, the "Once Upon a Time" star revealed to E! News that her pregnancy
cravings didn't change much from her first pregnancy. "My biggest craving with this pregnancy
is banana peppers," she said. "The last pregnancy, I was all about jalapenos, which aren't very
far from the banana pepper tree." The modern-day fairy tale couple welcomed their first son,
Oliver Finlay, in May 2014.
